LITTLETON

about the COVER

In 1904, county commissioners made a pivotal decision to build the new courthouse on a hill, choosing a site that overlooked Main Street with a clear view of Mount Blue Sky (then known as Mount Evans). This choice, made despite pressure to keep the courthouse between the railroad and river, provided a prominent location for the structure. On January 17, 1908, the courthouse was dedicated, attracting a crowd of 1,500. In 1998, the City of Littleton designated the building as a local landmark, celebrating its historical significance. Following a restoration, the courthouse was rededicated on May 13, 2000. Today, nearly 120 years after its dedication, this enduring building remains the Littleton Municipal Courthouse, a symbol of the city’s heritage and vision. Our favorite is the family-run Virgilio’s Pizzeria and Wine Bar on Kipling, just north of C470. LOCAL TIP

“One of the things we love the most about living in Littleton is the wonderful sense of community, and specifically the Columbine community. When we moved here almost 20 years ago, I could never imagine how tight-knit it is, and we wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Also, the location couldn’t be better with downtown 20 minutes away, Red Rocks amphitheater 10 minutes, and access to the mountains just a few minutes away. One of our favorite restaurants is Marino’s Pizzeria. It is truly a hidden gem as it is nestled in a residential area. The pizzas are handmade in a wood-fired oven that owner Marino Morra designed and built himself. They taste just like the pizza we have had in Italy, right here in Littleton!” – Kristen M.

LITTLETON’S hidden gems

Jackass Hill Park

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a sunset picnic, walk the dog or photograph the Rocky Mountains, Jackass Hill Park is the place to check out. Located off Prince Street and Jackass Hill Road, this historic open space is open to the public.

In 1917 during World War I, an entrepreneur bought up scores of mules, hoping to sell them to the U.S. Army. However, after Germany surrendered, the Army refused to buy the mules. It has been said that the animals were left on the hill to starve, giving the location its unmistakable name.

In 1993, Jackass Hill was rezoned for building. Today, a small neighborhood and a 17-acre open space with spectacular views exist on the historical land. From the top of the hill, the views span for miles: from Pikes Peak to Downtown Denver and everything in between.

Roxborough State Park, Chatfield Reservoir, Red Rocks Amphitheater and the Boulder Flatirons can all be seen from this Littleton gem.

Crabapple Route

In 2014, Mayor Phil Cernanec called Littleton the Flowering Crabapple Capital of Colorado. His proclamation can be credited in large part to the Crabapple Route, a stretch of homes and city property that is lined with mature crabapple trees. Each spring, the streets of Littleton burst with bright color, and the city smells of flowers as over 7,000 trees come into full bloom.

Many of the trees found on this historic route were planted nearly 50 years ago as part of a City beautification program funded by the City Council. This program was inspired in 1969 by then Mayor Vaughn Gardinier. Although the City was in charge of the program, homeowners took it upon themselves to plant additional crabapple trees on their own properties, furthering the mission. Over 40 years later, in 2011, the City of Littleton formalized the route by drawing up a

map of a loop winding through the most colorful streets and neighborhoods.

Since, citizen volunteers have come together to form a nonprofit organization called “Littleton Crabapple Route, Inc.” Each year, the organization plants new crabapple trees “to continue and promote the appreciation of the springtime color display of flowering crabapple trees in Littleton.” The organization also promotes events to honor the route’s heritage.

The Crabapple Route is best enjoyed during spring and can be accessed by foot, bicycle or vehicle by anyone interested in reveling in its beauty. The seven-mile route is marked by street signs and pink, white and green blooms.

To make a tax-deductible donation or volunteer your support, contact the

Littleton Crabapple Route, Inc. at P.O. Box 110, Littleton, CO 80160, send an email to LittletonCrabappleRoute@gmail.com, or call Larry Borger at (303) 798-8098.

MEET LITTLETON'S (AND DOG MAYOR PRO TEM) Dog

With a woof, woof and a wag, wag, welcome to Littleton! My name is Murdoch, and I was elected Littleton’s first honorary dog mayor in 2021. I was all ears when I heard that Historic Littleton, Inc. was hosting a canine contest to promote our city and raise awareness for historic preservation. After jumping at the chance to enter into paw-litics, it has become my great honor to represent the community where I live.

In addition to serving my constituents with event appearances and educational programs, I like to sniff out all of the fun things to do around Littleton! My pet parents and I keep active with daily walks and hikes along the many scenic trails. My favorites are the Highline Canal Trail, Chatfield State Park and Deer Creek Canyon Park. I am also quite the regular along the South Platte River and Mary Carter Greenway Trail. When I’m in the mood for shopping, I go to Aspen Grove and Historic Downtown Littleton, where many of the merchants are dogfriendly and offer yummy treats. And when I feel like a leisurely stroll or picnic, you can find me at Gallup Park.

Littleton is a paw-sitively perfect place to live—for both humans and canines alike. If you ever see me around town, please feel free to introduce yourself. I am often wearing my signature eye goggles. And I love giving pawshakes and the occasional howl-o!

Mayor

With a snort, snuffle, and a wiggle-waggle, greetings from Littleton! I’m Netty, your pintsized, flat-faced Mayor Pro Tem. It’s an honor to serve my beloved community, where my paws happily trot every day.

When I’m not attending to official duties like sniffing out new businesses or overseeing paw-licy decisions, you’ll find me cuddling up with my mom and dad or chasing those bunnies around town. I adore downtown Littleton—so many friendly faces and tasty treats!

As a proud French bulldog with a nose for community spirit, I’m here to remind everyone: Littleton is paws-itively perfect. Feel free to say “bonjour” if you see me!

EMILY AND CORY

LOVE LIFE IN LITTLETON CLAUSS

FAITH. FAMILY. FUN.

“We’ve lived in Littleton since 2005,” smiles Emily Clauss. She resides with her husband Cory and their three children, Bennett (11) and Ava and Aspen (8). Their playful puppy Lily rounds out their family with her energetic nature. This tight-knit family has built a life filled with joy, adventure, and strong community connections.

Emily and Cory’s paths crossed in 2004 while they were both working in the banking industry at Bank of the West. Emily grew up outside of Seattle, Washington, but graduated from the University of Denver and Cory graduated from the University of Iowa. They both moved to

Colorado in their early twenties, and when they met and married, they decided to make Colorado their home.

Cory and Emily soon transitioned into other jobs. Cory works as a surety broker for a company called USI Colorado. Not only does he have countless Colorado clients, but he also travels frequently around the country to visit others. Emily works at Waterstone Church, which she loves. “I’ve been there for 15 years,” she says. Working as the Communications Director suits her personality and the church has a special place in their hearts.

FAITH

“When we moved and started our family in Colorado, Waterstone became the family who surrounded us. They supported us during our journey of having

kids. We went through IVF to have all three kids.” Although the journey was challenging, they are fortunate to have their church family praying for them.

“Looking back, it feels like God’s fingerprints are all over it.” Not all of the rounds were successful, so there were a lot of ups and downs, but they were surrounded by people who supported and cared for them. “The community meant so much to us,” she raves. Emily has a heart of gratitude for those she works with. “They really represent the person of Jesus, including His mercy, grace and kindness toward people.” Waterstone is a place where they feel connected, loved, and appreciated.

FAMILY

As a family, everyone thrives on outdoor activities. “We love to bike, camp, and ski

together,” explains Emily. Their favorite spot in the summer is the South Platte, where they enjoy riding their bikes to Toast Restaurant on Santa Fe. If they are getting out of town, they frequent Winter Park. “That’s where we go to most often,” says Emily. It’s where they paddleboard during warm months and ski during winter. “We’ve got the Ikon Pass so we can catch a few different resorts.”

FUN

The Clauss family loves to have fun together. When spring approaches, it’s all about sports for this active family. Emily and Cory’s daughters participate in soccer with Colorado United, while Bennett enjoys baseball. Cory, who coaches the baseball team, finds that sports helps them connect with other families.

With life on the go, everyone likes to eat out. Their favorite restaurants include Home Grown Tap & Dough, which is right down the street from them. They also love Tacos Selene. Or you could find them at Toast, their breakfast spot.

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS

Being residents of Littleton for almost two decades, the Clauss family has a few tips for the holidays. On Thanksgiving weekend, they love to watch the Christmas Tree Lighting and

parade in Old Littleton as a family. Another highlight is the Hudson Gardens Christmas Lights for their twinkling lights, spreading Christmas cheer.

LOCAL HOTSPOTS

Other favorite local spots include the Littleton Museum, which was great when the kids were young. “We went there all the time to be immersed in the history of this town and see the animals too,” says Emily. She also recommends the Lavender Festival at Chatfield Farms in the summer, which is a fragrant delight.

With kids, Emily recommends the pool at Ridge Recreation Center. “It has a zerodepth entry and a play structure,” she raves. With a lazy river, people can float around at their leisure. “We’ve done so many birthday parties there,” she adds. Her kids also love Urban Air, which is perfect for elementary-aged kids.

Emily and her family are the epitome of embracing life in Littleton. With their love for the outdoors, strong community connections, and cherished family traditions, they have found their home and heart in this wonderful town.

LOCAL TIP

“One of Littleton’s bestkept secrets is Coventry Farms equestrian center, down a little dirt road just off Mineral and Santa Fe. And one of the best things about Coventry Farms is The Right Step, a therapeutic riding program for kids and adults who are struggling with physical, emotional, behavioral or cognitive disabilities. There’s just something magical that happens between a rider and a gentle, sweet-natured horse.” –

According to their website, Jeffco students continue to outperform the state in all grade levels and content areas on state testing. Jeffco goals are guided by the Jeffco Generations Vision, recently developed by new Superintendent Jason Glass.

To locate your designated neighborhood school, visit the Jeffco School Finder page on the Jeffco website, and enter your address. Families can also “Choice Enroll” at any Jeffco school, which means you can attend any school in the area if there is space available and your student is accepted through the Choice Enrollment process.
