CULTURALISSUES

CoramDeoAcademybelievesthatallhumanlifeissacredandthatwearecreatedintheimageofGodandcalled todefendandprotectthatlife.Webelievetherearetwodistinctgenders,maleandfemale,andtogetherthey reflect the image and nature of God and the Biblical meaning of “marriage” described in Scripture (Gen 2:18–25).

CoramDeoAcademyiscommittedtoahealthydiscussionofthisissueinawaythatvaluesallthoseofother opinions,yetdoesnotcompromiseourvalues.OurultimategoalisChristianunitywithintheparametersofthe Apostles’CreedandthetruthofScripture.

OVERARCHINGCULTURE

WhenGodmadehumans,Hemadeusinhisownimage,acommunityreflectiveofHistriunenaturewiththe capacitytoloveasHehasloved.Inthelastcentury,schoolshaveassumedafragmentedviewthatreducesa person to an individualinneedofknowledge.AtCoramDeoAcademy,webelieveindisciplingthewhole persontoloveGodandlove,honor,andserveothers.

DISCIPLINEPOLICY

ThetwogreatestcommandmentsaretoloveGodandloveourneighbors;therefore,ourclassroomandschool discipleshipisfocusedwiththisinmind.Ourgoalfordisciplineistobringastudentbackintofellowshipwith the school body when he/she has sinned. Our discipleship plan embodies this understanding as we serve alongsideparentsintrainingchildreningodliness.

ELECTRONICDEVICEPOLICY

Useofpersonalelectronicdevices(i.e.,phones,smartphones,portablegamingdevices,smartwatches,etc.)by studentsisprohibitedoncampus.Suchdevicesmustbeturnedoffandleftinbagsorbackpackswhileastudent isatschooloroncampus.AnyuseofphonesmustbeapprovedbytheHeadofSchoolortheSecretary.

➢ Useoflaptopsispermissibleforsecondaryacademicpurposesonlyunderthepre-approveddirection andsupervisionofateacher

CHEATINGANDPLAGIARISM

Cheating is defined as looking at another’s work without theteacher’spermissionorcommunicatingwith anotherduringanexamwithouttheteacher’spermission

Plagiarismisdefinedasusinganother’sworkwithoutthankinghimfortheuse.

Ifeithercheatingorplagiarismoccur,theassignmentorexamwillimmediatelyreceiveascoreof0andparents willbenotified.AsecondcheatingorplagiarisminfractionwillresultinaDisciplinaryHearing.

UNIFORMVIOLATION

IfaUniformPolicyviolationisidentified,aClassReachformwillbecompletedbythefacultymember.Thiswill notifythedesignatedDressCodeMonitor.IfaUniformPolicyinfractionhasoccurred,themonitorwillinform parentsviaanautomatedClassReachnotification.Afterfourviolationshaveoccurred,anOfficeVisitwillbe scheduledfollowingtheOfficeVisitprotocol.Afterthe5thviolationwithinthesameschoolterm,thestudent willbesenthome SubsequentDressCodeViolationswillrequiretheHeadofSchooltoinitiateOfficeVisitsin accordancewiththeapplicableDisciplinePlan

EXCESSIVEOFFICEVISITS

Asnotedabove,thepurposeoftheDisciplinePolicyistoshapegodlycharacterinthestudent Ifitbecomes apparenttotheHeadofSchoolthatthestudent’scharacterisnotimprovingovertimeand/orisbecoming worsetothedetrimentoftheschoolculture,theHeadofSchoolwillmeetwiththeparentsandtheywillcome upwithaplantoresolvetheissue.TheHeadofSchoolwillalsomeetwiththeparentsincaseswherethestudent exhibitsalackofrepentanceorlacks interestinattendingCoramDeoAcademy.TheHeadofSchoolmay,athis discretion,allowforadditionalmeetingswiththeparentsifthepreviousDisciplinePlantohelpthestudentwas unsuccessful.Tohelptheparentsunderstandtheirchild’sbehavior,theymayberequiredtositwiththestudent duringapartoralloftheschoolday IftheHeadofSchooldeterminesthatthestudent’sbehavioralissuestill cannotbecorrectedthroughtheDisciplinePlan(s)generatedbythemeeting(s)withtheparents,thenitwillbe considereda“SeriousDisciplineCase”

SERIOUSDISCIPLINECASES

ASeriousDisciplineCaseoccurswhenastudentexhibitsextremeungodlybehaviorthatimpedesthecultureof theschoolonoroffcampus Examplesinclude,butarenotlimitedto:

➢ ExcessiveOfficeVisits(seesectionofthesamenameabove)

➢ Unrepentant,consistent,orseriousdisrespectofauthority

➢ Unsafebehavior endangermenttooneselforothers

➢ Overtmoralissues,including,butnotlimitedto:

○ Inappropriatetouching

○ Substanceabuse

○ Illegalactivity

IftheHeadofSchoolhasdeterminedthatthestudent’swordsorbehaviorconstituteaSeriousDisciplineCase, thestudentwillbesubjecttoaDisciplineHearingbeforeadesignatedDisciplineCouncilthatincludes,butis notlimitedto:theHeadofSchool,anEducationCouncilmember,andatleastoneElder(foraminimumof threemembers).Parentsandthestudent(ifageappropriate)willbepresentattheDisciplineHearing.Atthis point,theDisciplineCouncilwilldeterminethenecessarycourseofaction,whichmayincludesuspensionor expulsionofthestudent.Tuitionwillnotbereimbursedforsuspensionsorexpulsions.

OURPROGRAM

AtCoramDeoAcademy,webelievethatcurriculumisanessentialtoolbuttheteacherbringseducationtolife through use of that tool. As such, in addition to using variouscurriculaandadevelopedlistofskillsand objectives,wewillobtainthemostqualifiedanddedicatedteacherspossible,whoexemplifyaloveoflearning andpointstudentstoJesusChristthroughimmersingtheirteachingintruth,goodness,andbeauty.

AssignmentswillbegivenanddirectedbyCoramDeoAcademyfaculty.Studentsthatneedassistancemayhave parentalaid,butassignmentsmustbecompletedasdirected.

Humanities is the study of the image-bearers of God, which informs our understanding of the human experienceinsocietyandculture HistorygivesinsightintoGod’sProvidenceandprovidesthosewhohavegone beforeusavoiceintothefuture.Literatureallowsstudentstoanalyzeanddiscerncharactersandseetruthsor lies,goodnessorevil,andbeautyorugliness.TheologyprovidesintentionalstudyofJesusChrist,theanchor pointofalltruth,goodness,andbeauty.ByintegratingthesesubjectsintoourHumanitiesprogram,theteacher actsasaguidetoaidstudentsinnavigatingcontext,bias,originalsources,andstory.Studentsthenusethat informationtodiscerntruth

BIBLE

The Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 1:6 says, “ThewholecounselofGodconcerningallthings necessaryforHisownglory,man’ssalvation,faithandlife,iseitherexpresslysetdowninScripture,orbygood andnecessaryconsequencemaybededucedfromScripture:untowhichnothingatanytimeistobeadded, whether by new revelations of the Spirit or traditions of men (2 Tim 3:15–17, Gal 1:8–9, 2 Thess 2:2)

SCIENCE

OurphilosophyofScienceisbestexpressedinPsalm19:1–6,whichremindsusthatcreationitselfdeclaresthe gloryandwisdomofGod.

We believe that the study of God’s creation reveals His handiwork A right study of science informs our worldviewanddoesnotstandinoppositiontofaith,butdeclaresGod’spower.Throughourscienceprogram, weseektoinspirewonderandcuriosityaboutthemagicofcreationandhelpequipChristianstudentstofulfill theGenesisdominionmandate.

MATHEMATICS

GodisaGodoforderandHisunchangingnatureisrevealedinthestudyofmathematics Mathematicssolvefor objectivetruth,andthispurposetranslatestoalloflife.Basedonachild'sskillratherthanage,weprogress throughthecomplexityofconceptstodevelopreasoningskills.Weseektotiemathematicsintootherfieldsof study so that students understand that all learning is integrated. Allowing time for mastery, our math progressionmaymovesloweranddeeper,butasstudentslearntodrawconclusionsanduselogicalreasoning, theybuildnotonlyquantitativeskillsbutgrowthindiscernment

PHYSICALEDUCATIONANDRECESS

Weareeducatingthewholeperson,mind,body,andsoul;eachaspectofthewholepersonissharpenedbythe others.Physicalfitnessisnotforglorificationofself,butitisdirectedatself-discipline,whichblessesthebodyof

Christ.Wearephysicalbeingswholiveincommunity,andphysicalactivitiescreatefellowship.Therefore,our goalsincludegainingstrength,self-discipline,andultimatelyglorifyingGodwithourbodies.Wedonothavea formalphysicaleducationprogram,butendeavortoincludephysicalactivityandbodymovementthroughout our school day for this purpose, and train through a variety of means. Recess is meant for joy, exercise, training in skills, and even healthy competition. We therefore provide opportunitiesthroughoutthedayforstudentstoplayoutsidewiththeirsiblingsandclassmates.
