Summary
Summary
Since 1981, this painting has been owned by Francisco Reyes Manzano. It was acquired, together with an important art collection, from Gonzalo Córdova Lara, a Spanish/Guatemalan citizen and direct descendant of Álvaro Guzmán de Lara, Spanish Prime Minister in times of Alfonso XII (king of Spain 1875 - 1895).
The painting has been authenticated on several occasions; among them, twice by Mr. Shehbaz Safrani, a prestigious curator residing in New York City and whose vast Curriculum vitae, as well as contact information, are available upon request. In 2005, the painting was electronically analyzed (using a digital tomography) by European curators (the results of these studies are not available, due to the fact that they belong to a buyer who withdrew from the purchasing transaction).
The painting, wich belonged to the painter's personal collection, is a representation of his companion: Hendrickje Stoffels -already of a certain age- whom he portrayed on several occasions during his life as can be ascertained in books of Rembrandt.
On october 15th, 1996, a purchase intent transaction involving the painting was concluded and the painting itself escrowed at Almacenes Nacionales de Depósitos for 75% of its total worth (at the exchage rate then in force), as per the operating rules of said institution. The operation in question was cancelled due to a baseless accusation against the owner related to tax evasion on the part of the Ministry of Finance, wich then proceeded to seize the painting. This triggered a trial, wich lasted almost four years and concluded with the painting returning to its rightful owner (all documents demonstrating the legal ownership of the painting exists and are available).
The painting is available to any party seriously interested in purchasing it; any such party is welcome to submit it to authentication by qualified Rembrandt experts.

Hendrickje Stoffels, 1664 ?
oil on canvas, Louvre Paris
Hendrickje lived in Rembrandt's house from approximately 1647, at first as a maid, but fast becoming much more. In 1649 Hendrickje returned to Bredevoort for the summer (possibly with Rembrandt accompanying her), and is there mentioned as a witness to a christening mentioned in the Bredevoorts church records. The Eighty Year War was past and peace was finally reaching even the eastern Netherlands. There are several paintings of Rembrandt for wich she is suspected to have modelled.
In 1654 Hendrickje had to appear before the church council for "living in sin" with Rembrandt, who was a widower and 20 years her senior. That she was not only his maid was patently obvious, for she was pregnant with his daughter. On 30 October 1654, Cornelia van Rijn was baptized in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.
Rembrandt did not want to marry Hendrickje, because then he would forfeit the inheritance of his first wife Saskia van Uylenburgh -even with that inheritance he had major financial problems, but without it he would be bankrupt. Hendrickje wanted to strike up a friendship with Titus, Rembrandt's and Saskia's son, and -when Rembrandt's problems worsened- she and Titus came up with the idea of an art dealership run by them, only stocking paintings by Rembrandt. Titus appointed his half sister Cornelia as his heir.
In 1663, a plague epidemic hit Amsterdam, and Hendrickje died of it. She was buried in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam on 24 July 1663.
