about the COVER

One of the most iconic views in Sacramento is the Tower Bridge. My kids call it the “Golden Gate Bridge” understandably, no matter how many times I correct them. They look forward to seeing it every time we go by. For the cover, I had the pleasure of collaborating with BeLocal to create two very different takes on the bridge. The cover shot reflects a gorgeous summer sunset, and the alternate shot on Page 67 represents my more unique take.

SACRAMENTO FUN FACTS

● LET IT SNOW?

Snow in Sacramento is extremely rare. So rare, in fact, that there hasn’t been a decent amount of accumulation since 1976 (when there were 2 inches). Dustings come and go, but Sacramento stays basically snow-free.

● MARK TWAIN

At one point in 1866, Sacramento was considered home to author Mark Twain back when The Sacramento Union newspaper was operational. Twain began writing long before even considering the adventures of one Huckleberry Finn and one Tom Sawyer.

● THE “CITY OF TREES”

The “City of Trees” is Sacramento’s nickname for a reason. Though it’s a bit difficult to lose count, our city has the most trees per capita of any other city in the world (though some say Paris takes the top spot). These elms, oaks and sycamores provide a totally green aesthetic to our community and much-needed shade in the summer months — they can actually lower ground temperatures by 36 degrees on a hot day.

● ON WHEELS

In 1903, the first car dealership opened, and one year later, 27 Sacramento residents owned cars.

LOCAL TIP

“McKinley Park is my favorite place to play tennis because they have eight lighted and wellmaintained tennis courts. You can also sign up for family or group tennis lessons with Coach Ken Selby through the City of Sacramento Department of Youth, Parks, and Community Enrichment.”

- Alison S.

TOWER RECORDS

Tower Records, a historic music retailer, was founded in Sacramento in 1960, taking its name from the iconic Tower Theatre located nearby. While Tower Records grew into a worldwide brand, it has since closed its doors. The Tower Theatre, built in 1938, remains a cherished local landmark.

LOCAL TIP

● GREAT WEATHER

“Get dolled up, enjoy the 1970s Palm Springs vibe of Shangri-La, have a beautiful cocktail by the fabulous mixologists, then head over to Brahma for the main course, where you can enjoy shared pizzas, meat platters and all 10/10 food! Such a fun date night activity!” - Jasmine H.

The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate, which means we can spend a lot of time walking and biking the nearby American River Bike Trail, hiking, whitewater rafting, kayaking and just enjoying afternoons year-round under our shady trees.

● EXPRESS SERVICE

The Pony Express service originated right in Sacramento back in 1860 and stretched as far east as Missouri.

● I STREET BRIDGE

I Street Bridge is the heaviest swinging center bridge in the U.S., built in 1911. Overall, the bridge weighs over 7 million pounds and has two decks for highway and railroad traffic. The bridge can span 90 degrees clockwise to give fast access to the city river and carries about 10,000 vehicles and trucks.

● ON THE MOVE

Sacramento is California’s sixth capital since 1854. The capital city of California wasn’t always Sacramento. The first one was Monterey. The city of Benicia was also the capital at one point. San Francisco, for a brief time, served as the capital, as did the cities of San Jose and Vallejo. It wasn’t until 1879 that Sacramento landed the title permanently.

● ANIMAL EXHIBITS IN MCKINLEY PARK

Animal exhibits existed in McKinley Park for many years. In 1914, two brown bear cubs were added to the deer, rabbits, doves and pheasants that had been there for many years. The deer park was located where the George “Butter” Cole field is today. Monkeys, raccoons and some exotic birds were housed in the Northeastern corner. A lion was added in 1917. According to one account, alligators had been placed in the small lake in McKinley Park. In June of 1927, when the Land Park zoo opened, all of the animals were transferred to the superior facility.

● A ROBUST SEAPORT

Sacramento may not have a frontrow seat on the ocean, but it does have a robust seaport, thanks to the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta River. It’s called the Port of West Sacramento, and it is 87.6 miles from San Francisco.

● PLAY BALL!

Sacramento is also known for its sports fans. In addition to the Sacramento Kings, the city’s NBA team, the city has a full range of seasonal minor league sports, including baseball and soccer. The Sacramento River Cats, Sacramento’s minor league baseball team, have unparalleled success on the field — winning three Triple-A Championships (2007, 2008 and 2019) and five Pacific Coast League Championships, and 12 PCL South Division Championships. Catch a game this summer at Sutter Health Park. After 15 seasons as an affiliate of the Oakland A’s, the River Cats are now the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Republic FC is Sacramento’s USL soccer team, and since its inauguration in 2014, the team has drawn passionate fans from all over the city.

● GRAND ELECTRIC CARNIVAL IN 1895

● RUN TO FEED THE HUNGRY

In 1994, 796 participants turned out for the inaugural Run to Feed the Hungry event on Thanksgiving morning. This Sacramento tradition, boasting 21,362 participants in 2020, is not only the largest run in Sacramento but also the largest Thanksgiving Day fun run in the country!

The Grand Electric Carnival was a night parade of illuminated floats mounted on electric streetcars that rolled down streets ablaze with lights. It was held on Sept. 9, 1895, to celebrate the arrival of hydroelectric power in Sacramento from 22 miles away at the Folsom Powerhouse. Sacramento’s electric carnival parade was so beautiful that Walt Disney Co. later used it as a model for its Electrical Parade. It’s what was said to be the world’s first long-distance electric power transmission.

● A PIECE OF HISTORY

The Crocker Art Museum has been showing art since 1885, way before most of the country had places to hang it. It’s located in the Crocker family mansion, which is a piece of history in itself. The house was finished in 1872, and even back then, the mansion had a bowling alley, skating rink, natural history museum, a library, and a gallery — and that’s just the first and second floors.

● NATIVE PEOPLE

Nisenan, Modoc and Plains Miwok Native Americans had lived in the area for perhaps thousands of years. Unlike the settlers who eventually made Sacramento their home, these Native Americans left little evidence of their existence. Their diet was dominated by acorns taken from the plentiful oak trees in the region and by fruits, bulbs, seeds and roots gathered throughout the year.

● TAKE A WALK THROUGH OUR HISTORY

The California State Capitol is a living museum that allows visitors to wander the hallways where state leaders worked over 150 years ago. Visitors to the Capitol can experience California’s rich history and witness the making of history through the modern lawmaking process.

● SACRAMENTO STATE UNIVERSITY

California State University, Sacramento (CSUS, Sacramento State or informally, Sac State) was founded in 1947, and it is the 11th oldest school in the 23-campus California State University system. The university, which sits on 305 acres, is the site of two National Register of Historic Places, the Julia Morgan House and the terminus of the Pony Express. It enrolls approximately 31,500 students annually, has an alumni base of more than 250,000 and offers 151 different bachelor’s degrees, 69 master’s degrees, 28 types of teaching credentials and five doctoral degrees.

● ALL ABOARD!

Sacramento celebrates its railroad history. The nation’s first transcontinental railroad broke ground in Sacramento in the 1860s, informing a large part of the city’s culture and officially establishing it as the terminus of the first railroad to run coast to coast. Inside the California State Railroad Museum, you’ll see a golden spike identical to the one Leland Stanford pounded into the ground in Promontory, Utah, uniting the Eastern and Western sections of the railroad.

LOCAL TIP

“Touchstone Brewing Company is great because they have something for everyone! You will find both a restaurant/brewery AND a climbing gym next door! The gym, Pipeworks, has more than just climbing; they offer yoga, spin, HIIT, kids camps & more! The brewery not only offers a delicious Hazy IPA, but they also brew a NA beer, gose, a hard seltzer, and more. They are about to release one of my favorite stouts, Camp Slippers, and the food offered is just as top notch as their brews!”

- Shelly G.

LOCAL TIP

“The chicken sando from Bawk is delicious, especially if you’re looking for some heat. But I think my favorite might be World Famous HotBoys. It’s a perfect balance of heat, and the special sauce they use is so good!”

MEET LORENZO

Want to know the top restaurants and bars in Sacramento? Why blindly venture out on your own when someone has done the work for you? Sacramento insider Lorenzo Garcia has taste-tested food and drinks from local restaurants and bars for years.

As the mastermind behind @SacFoodandBooze, Lorenzo has built a faithful following on Instagram. He knows the pulse of the community, the best offerings to please your palate at local restaurants and the ambiance of local bars. Best of all, he shares it with his followers on social media.

ABOUT LORENZO

Born and raised in Sacramento, Lorenzo is a true local. He comments, “I really enjoyed growing up in the area. I moved to Southern California in my early 20s, but I wanted to come back to Sacramento. Whenever I could, I made a trip to visit friends and family.”

His introduction to the possibility and potential of social media as a platform came during his college years with an assignment to create a business plan that included a social media strategy. Posting about men’s fashion trends drew people to Lorenzo’s page. As he says, “I saw how Instagram and social media could really connect people.”

When he moved back to Sacramento, new restaurants were popping up. That prompted Lorenzo and his sister to check out new restaurants and start an Instagram page.

“The idea came a while ago from my project in college,” he said. Lorenzo asked his sister if they could collaborate on a page together, and the rest is history. They became social media influencers with a combined 100,000 followers on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok who are genuinely interested in what Lorenzo and his sister have to share.

GAINING TRACTION

How does SacFoodandBooze find its following? Lorenzo says, “With so many food bloggers in Sacramento, we are very collaborative with our page and showcase the places we enjoy going to.” With picture-perfect photos and carefully chosen spots, fans frequent his page time and time again.

“We also build relationships with owners and managers,” adds Lorenzo. “We are really involved in what we share on our page. We are all in this together.”

CONNECTIONS AND COMMUNITY

SacFoodandBooze is all about connecting with the community and finding new friends and family, according to Lorenzo. “We’re on the same journey sharing good places that we love and finding good places to eat.”

Through the process of sharing his journey, Lorenzo has found some good friends, dubbed his “fellow foodies.” A few months ago, he even went to one of their weddings. Newcomers to Sacramento have also found connections to others through SacFoodandBooze.

“I just like to share our passions and get involved with the community as much as possible,” explains Lorenzo.

Q&A ▸ We also caught up with Lorenzo to ask him a few questions of our own.

Q: Sweet or savory?

A: That’s a tough one. I love savory, but I always need a little sweetness at the end of a meal. A bite of chocolate is ideal to finish a meal.

Q: What is your No. 1 spot for food?

A: Kru is one of my favorite restaurants. This Sacramento classic sushi restaurant has some of the best food in town and some of the best service in town. I love how much they focus on the details of the food and its quality. I like to ask the chef to make his special of the week.

Q: What is your No. 1 spot for booze?

A: The Snug. It’s a classic bar that has amazing cocktails and a really good vibe. It’s really small, and that’s why it’s called The Snug.

Q: Tips for finding the best food and drink?

A: Wherever I go, I ask the server for their recommendations. They know what is best on the menu or recommend seasonal menu items. We live so close to so many resources; it’s always best to order what’s in season. The same thing with the bars — ask the bartender what their favorite cocktail is or give them creative freedom. People in the restaurant/bar industry are friendly and love to share what they have created.

SUPPORT LOCAL

“We created SacFoodandBooze to support local and share our hidden gems,” says Lorenzo. He reaches followers on all platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and his website.

“I knew we needed to share across all platforms to get to every audience,” he explains. “That’s why we built our TikTok account.” In a digital age, one follower soon led to another, and Lorenzo built a loyal following.

When Lorenzo isn’t working on SacFoodandBooze, you can find him doing social media and marketing for restaurants and businesses. He loves what he does, and sharing his favorite finds with the community makes him happy. We hope you enjoyed Lorenzo's dining guide on pages 18 through through 22 and will discover your own favorite places soon!

Today, they welcome both new and seasoned wine enthusiasts to join them for their Estate Tasting Flight from the comfort of the tasting room that’s located in their 1850 homestead or for a wine-indulged picnic on their sprawling grounds. They are eager to meet new residents, and they hope to see you shortly for a tasting, a music and food truck-filled Friday night or at one of their many concerts. River games Cats are fun for all ages!
TOYOTA HOME RUN HILL AT
SACRAMENTO RIVER CATS BALL GAME

The city of Sacramento is situated at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers, which give citizens a multitude of options for entertainment and lifestyle. Below are several of our favorite river access spots to spend a summer day. They are popular areas for kayaking, SUPs, fishing, swimming and picnicking.

BLACK MINERS BAR ▸ Located within the Folsom State Lake Recreation Area, this beautiful, clean river access spot has been recently updated with clean restrooms, barbecue grills, picnic tables, shady trees, pavement leading to the river and plenty of parking. Paddleboards and kayaks are available to rent at an hourly rate with an ID. This is also a great swimming spot, as there is often a lifeguard on duty. The vehicle entry fee for this California state park can be paid to the park aide at the entrance kiosk.

LAKE NATOMA ▸ Those who enjoy taking their SUPs and kayaks to Folsom Lake might not be aware of the smaller but more picturesque Lake Natoma, located on the Lower American River, just downriver from the Folsom Lake Dam. The lake is surrounded by scenic views, and lovers of the outdoors will savor the abundant recreational opportunities Lake Natoma has to offer. It is the perfect spot for a SUP adventure. Other activities include rowing, fishing and sailing. Note: CSUS Aquatic Center is located along the beautiful Lake Natoma and offers equipment rentals.

PARADISE BEACH ▸ Park at Glenn Hall Park to access this hidden gem. There are trails and sandy beaches with plenty of shade. It’s very dog friendly but a little bit of a walk to the beach, so pack smart and make sure to bring your own trash bag if you’re planning to picnic.

AMERICAN AND SACRAMENTO RIVER

“Best place to go for a concert is Harlow’s, hands down! Ace of Spades and Golden 1 are fine for bigger artists, but Harlow’s hits all the right notes and gets very good bands, just not the superstars.”

- Elliot N.

EXPLORE SACRAMENTO

MADDY EDMUNDS

“I moved here about four years ago, and I started a blog series called the Beginners Guide to Sacramento,” shares Maddy Edmunds. The idea came to her while at a restaurant one day when she thought, “Why not share the experience with others?” She decided to snap some photos and start blogging about the experience. What was her original blog post? “It was ‘Dad’s Kitchen on Freeport Boulevard,’” recalls Maddy.

A professional photographer by day, Maddy started doing a weekly post and sharing it with others. “I decided to

blog and take pictures of every new thing I tried in Sacramento. Moving to a new city and not really knowing many people, this was a way to motivate me to get out of the house and explore the city,” recalls Maddy. She set a goal to try one new thing per week and share it online. “Through this,” Maddy shares, “I was able to network and meet friends.” She continues to highlight local events, upcoming happenings and much more.

Maddy has now built quite a following on social media, as many others were interested in what this newcomer

had to say and were eager to follow in her footsteps. She has amassed over 82k followers who now look to her for tips and recommendations. “Today, it has blossomed into such an awesome community of people!” beams Maddy.

RESTAURANTS & COFFEE SHOPS

Maddy’s favorite restaurant is Tank House BBQ. “They have great barbecue, and their dirty mac is excellent. It’s mac and cheese with smoked chicken,” shares Maddy. “Their dirty tots, which are tater tots with cheese and pulled pork on top, are incredible.” Nash & Proper is another one of her go-to restaurants. “They have a great fried chicken sandwich,” she comments, “and I LOVE fried chicken.”

Looking for Southern food? Maddy encourages new residents to stop by The Porch. “Their Southern food is really good,” she smiles, “especially the shrimp and grits.”

What about coffee? “Camellia Coffee Roasters is a great coffee spot, and they’ve got a phenomenal breakfast

sandwich.” Several other spots where you can catch Maddy getting her coffee fix are Pachamama Coffee or The Mill. Maddy adds, “The breakfast waffles at The Mill are really delicious too.”

For brunch, Maddy recommends Tower Café on Broadway. She raves, “They have the best French toast. It’s amazing! I also like the overall vibe of the restaurant; the patio is great and the indoor seating is really gorgeous. It’s a unique place to go for brunch.”

DATE NIGHTS

If you are looking to go on a date, Maddy recommends the River Fox Train in West Sacramento. This beer and wine train, complete with live music, is a whole lot of fun!

For those looking for a place to take their date during the day, Maddy suggests the River Fox Railbikes. Cruise along the river and the Yolo Countryside on a pedal-powered vehicle. It’s an experience like none other.

LOCAL TIP

“Go on the ‘Underground Tour’ at the Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento. The tour explains how the streets were raised to avoid further flooding, and the tour includes hollow sidewalks, sloped alleyways and the underground spaces themselves that were built in the 1860s.” - Taylor G

LOCAL TIP

“My sister and I have sampled just about everything on the menu at Maydoon Persian Cuisine. The food is always served hot, the meat always falls off the bone and the flavors are just right. You must try the Persian ice cream — it’s divine!” - Joann M.

“For other date ideas, check out a River Cats game and go to Drakes for drinks beforehand or afterward,” says Maddy. Those looking for live entertainment can attend the Sofia, a theater in Midtown, conveniently located next door to Café Bernardo and Four Palms.

Maddy suggests starting out the evening at Café Bernardo and comments, “I love the grilled salmon and flank steak and, of course, the yummy cocktails! My favorite is Cuatro Palmas!” Once inside the theater, Maddy suggests stopping by their bar to grab a beverage to enjoy during the show.

SEASONAL ACTIVITIES

Each season in Sacramento is unique and to be celebrated. Maddy says, “Sacramento spring and

fall really are my favorites. In the spring, the rose gardens start to bloom. It’s really fun to go through the McKinley Park Rose Garden and Capitol Rose Garden. They are so beautiful.”

Known as the City of Trees, Sacramento fall foliage does not disappoint. “In fall, Sacramento is amazing,” Maddy shares. “The trees and the colors are incredible.” She enjoys taking a trip outside Sacramento and going up to Apple Hill for pumpkins and apple pies.

“Visit Grandpa’s Cellar for their mini coffee flights and apple dumplings. So yummy!” Maddy raves.

When the summer heats up, expect to see Maddy at summer festivals for food and music. As for the winter, Maddy enjoys going to the Fab 40s to look at Christmas lights. Reserving a horse-drawn carriage to see the lights can really elevate the experience. Another option is to grab some friends and take a brew bike. Both options are sure to get you into the holiday spirit!

Looking for another option to celebrate the holiday season? “Getting tickets for The Nutcracker at the Performing Arts Center is something fun to do as well,” smiles Maddy.

CAN’T-MISS ANNUAL EVENTS

Foodies can rejoice with the annual Farm-to-Fork Festival, which Maddy looks forward to each year. She comments, “It kicks off the Legends of Wine event every September, which is on the Capitol steps. People enjoy tasting wine from all over California. It’s affordable and has allyou-can-drink tastings. It’s my favorite event of the year.” Multiple events take place throughout the week, which feature different restaurants and chefs. “They shed light on the farm-to-fork process and how food gets to our tables in restaurants,” says Maddy.

Another event that Maddy has circled on her calendar is Wide Open Walls, Sacramento’s weeklong mural event. Sacramento is covered with massive murals by many local artists. Maddy recommends, “If you’re looking for something to do, take a mural tour or a mural walk. Look at the murals and the signs. See the artists and the inspiration behind the mural.”

A TYPICAL WEEKEND

What does a typical weekend look like for Maddy? She starts at the Farmers’ Market in Midtown by grabbing coffee. Her next stop is purchasing a fresh bouquet of flowers from a local farm before picking up some produce. She then enjoys lunch at a local restaurant before

catching an event such as a Sacramento River Cats baseball game. On Sunday morning, she enjoys spending time with friends for brunch and beer at a local brewery, such as Oak Park Brewery. “They have great food, a nice patio and a cool vibe,” Maddy adds.

For those new to Sacramento, Maddy would recommend walking around the Capitol, stopping by Capitol Park and exploring Old Sacramento. “You have to go to Old Sacramento,” says Maddy. “It’s a rite of passage.”

SACRAMENTO’S APPEAL

Sacramento is a big city with a small-town feel. “It’s the perfect balance,” says Maddy. She loves the Sacramento community. “Everyone is so welcoming,” she says.

How does Maddy find all of these events? Maddy laughs, “There are so many resources to find FUN! Facebook groups, networking apps, and Instagram profiles are filled with fun things to do in our city; we just have to be open-minded and willing!” Maddy follows her favorite sites on social media, including Visit Sacramento and Sacramento 365, which are constantly sharing local events.

“Sacramento is a great place to live,” says Maddy. “No matter what stage of life you’re in, there’s something for everyone.”

FIRST STEPS INTO YOUR

12 NEW HOME

1 2 3 4 5

Congratulations on your new home and welcome to the community! Moving into a new space is an exciting journey, but it also comes with a list of tasks to ensure a smooth transition. In this guide, we’ll walk you through 12 essential steps to help you seamlessly settle into your new home and the community.

New Home. New Address. This first step is easy but often overlooked, so make sure it’s a priority on your move-in checklist: your mail. Your subscriptions, driver’s license, vehicle registration, bank documents, credit cards, and insurance providers should all be notified. Stop by the post office or fill out a change of address form to ensure a seamless transition of all your mail to your new mailbox.

Power Up Your Home – Time to Set Up Your Utilities! Set up your utilities before moving in. Electricity, gas, water, and internet – get them all set up, and you’ll be streaming your favorite show while cooking dinner from day one. Much like your mail, all of these can be done online or by a phone call to SMUD, PG&E, and local internet providers.

Lock it Up Before you relax in your new home, another crucial step for your move-in list is addressing your home’s security. Your new home might come with new locks, but who else could have a key? Hire a locksmith to rekey all exterior locks and reprogram your garage door. You can even go as far as installing a security system. Your peace of mind will thank you!

Pro tip – Often, the rekeying is covered by your home warranty, so check into that before going out of pocket for the expense!

Freshen Up Your Home with a Professional Deep Cleaning It’s a good idea to hire a professional cleaning service to do a deep cleaning before moving into your new home. Enter Sparkle Professional Cleaning! With their deep-cleaning services, they’ll have your home sparkling in no time.

Amy Menendez of Sparkle Professional Cleaning has been making homes sparkle for over 25 years! Visit her website at SparkleProClean.net for rates.

Keep Your New Home Pest Free When a home sits vacant, it can become a cozy spot for unwanted critters. To ensure your new space remains pestfree, it’s a great idea to schedule a pest inspection and treatment, if necessary. This way, you can address any pests that might have moved in or potential openings that could attract new ones. It’s much easier to spot and handle these issues when the house is empty. Taking preventive steps is key to keeping your home pest-free!

Go Beyond the Current Floor Plan with an Addition or Remodel This is your time to create a space that reflects you! Whether you’ve moved into an existing home or have gone through the construction process with a builder, now is the time to really consider how you want your space to look and feel. From cabinets, floors, and walls to outdoor living spaces, there are so many ways to craft your ideal living space. Grab your hammer, or rather a phone, to call a professional to make sure demolition and remodel are done right!

Fidelis Builders specializes in additions, custom homes, and remodels. Visit their website for ideas, inspiration, and past projects at FidelisBuilt.com.

Design Your Interior Space It’s time to craft your space. Think rugs, table lamps, art, coffee tables, etc., but before you start hauling in the furniture, map out the master plan! Consider layout, functionality, and of course, style! Are you in need of a professional? We recommend Urban 57 Home Decor & Interior Design! With their expert advice, you’ll be picking out furniture, planning spaces, and choosing color schemes.

Since its establishment in 2016, Urban 57 Home Decor & Interior Design has become a staple in the East Sacramento community. Its roots, however, run much deeper as the owner, Kamran, opened his first store, Kamran’s Oriental Rug Bazaar, in 1991, and the business still exists today under the umbrella of Urban 57.

Craft an Outdoor Oasis in Sacramento’s City of Trees

Let’s talk landscaping! Sacramento’s abundant sunshine means there’s endless potential for transforming your outdoor space. Visit local gems such as The Plant Foundry or Green Acres for advice and plant-spiration tailored to our region’s climate. If you don’t have a green thumb, then we’d suggest consulting with a professional for some expert advice.

Pro Tip - Did you know that SMUD has a “Free Shade Tree” Program that offers up to 10 free trees per customer and over 30 varieties to choose from? They also offer free wood chips to residential customers to spread as mulch around trees and shrubs, making soil more fertile and helping trees keep growing during the summer heat. Chips can be picked up at SMUD, but be sure to bring your own tools to load the chips and bags to carry them in or a tarp to cover a pickup load! Visit SMUD.org/en/ Going-Green/Free-Shade-Trees for more info.

Schedule Regular Maintenance for Your HVAC System You need to be able to depend on your new system, so schedule regular maintenance to ensure efficient cooling in the hot summers and reliable heating in the cooler months. We recommend hiring a professional for an HVAC Tune-Up where a technician will inspect and give you a comprehensive report of the condition of the system.

Pro Tip - Mario, owner of AtticMan Heating & Air Conditioning, Insulation, suggests learning which filters are best for your HVAC system and how to change them, then marking your calendars every 2-3 months for a filter change. Also, if required, do any additional repairs and cleanings that are recommended on your system.

Upgrade Your Attic Insulation to Save Money on Heating and Cooling Costs You’ve had an HVAC inspection and tune-up, but it still seems like your bill remains high?

The system in your new home could be working overtime due to improper levels of attic insulation. Proper attic insulation is crucial to maintain a comfortable and energy-efficient home. Since building codes have changed over the years, that means it’s time to give your insulation a second look. AtticMan Heating & Air Conditioning, Insulation offers a Complimentary Insulation Inspection, so insulate and celebrate because comfort and reduced energy cost could be just a fluffy layer away!

AtticMan Heating & Air Conditioning, Insulation is widely recognized as one of Sacramento’s premier HVAC service providers. Visit their website for current specials, rebates, and to book your AC Tune-Up or Complimentary Insulation Inspection at AtticManHVAC.com.

Connect & Engage with Your New Community Though you are busy with the above tasks, take the time to connect and engage with your new community! The first step is introducing yourself to your new neighbors. A small wave goes a long way! We’d also recommend staying connected through the Nextdoor App, a great tool to stay up to date with activity in your area spanning everything from garage sales to local updates in the community.

Pro Tip - Connect on social media with some of the accounts that go above and beyond to keep residents in the know with new restaurants, local events, concerts, and more! Below are several that create great, hyper-local content.

MEET LYNDSAY BURCH:

INFORMED. INSPIRED. INVOLVED.

After transplanting to Sacramento for an internship at B Street Theater in 2013, Lyndsay Burch fell in love with the amazing, artistic people and the never-ending local opportunities. She is living her own American dream, and inviting others to live theirs too, by being informed, inspired, and involved in the community.

I HAVE A DREAM

Lyndsay has participated in theater since elementary school and directed her first play at age 13. While attending Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, North Carolina, her high school instructors and mentors helped Lyndsay cultivate her interest in directing, casting, and producing.

TOWER IS FAMOUS FOR SHOWINGS OF DIRECTOR’S CUTS, INDEPENDENT FILMS, FOREIGN FEATURES, DOCUMENTARIES, AND CLASSICS

After graduation, Lyndsay’s passion for directing led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Elon University followed by her participation in a longstanding cooperative post-graduate internship program at Sacramento’s B Street Theater. The internship allowed participants to amass professional credits, and it was a launching pad for many professional careers.

Ruth Gnirk ▸ Photography By Wes Davis

“When I came here for my directing internship in 2013, I loved B Street Theater, and I loved Sacramento,” Lyndsay smiled. “It felt like home and like family. I did every job at B Street, and it gave me the opportunity to grow as I worked to achieve my goal of becoming an Artistic Director.”

After completing her nine-month internship, Lyndsay became an Artistic Associate. She planned to gain more experience before moving on to become Artistic Director in a theater in New York or Boston. She was surprised at how quickly the Sacramento community became part of who she was and how deeply her roots grew here.

FOR LOVE OF SACRAMENTO

Lyndsay served B Street Theater and made connections within the community. Her thoughts of living elsewhere faded.

Lyndsay developed a real sense of ownership as she facilitated the preparation and relocation of B Street Theater to its new permanent home at The Sofia in 2018.

The Board of Directors and Buck Busfield (B Street Theater’s co-founder and original Artistic Director) had been so impressed by Lyndsay’s years of faithful service and her leadership during the move, that they promoted her to a position as the Associate Artistic Director. She would be working directly under Buck.

During the Pandemic, the theater served the community in a new way by providing a variety of weekly virtual events that connected 2,000 families each week. In 2021 B Street re-opened and Buck announced his pending retirement. Of all the applicants for the newly opened position of Artistic Director for B Street Theater, faithful and passionate Lyndsay Burch was chosen! It’s a great honor for Lyndsay to serve as

the Artistic Director for B Street Theater, and she cannot imagine leaving B Street or Sacramento.

HELPING OTHERS LIVE THE DREAM

For 14 consecutive years B Street Theatre has been named Best Live Theatre. They have also been recognized locally as the Best Performing Arts Organization. With this proud history, Lyndsay is humbled to be the first woman in artistic leadership at B Street and the second Artistic Director since its founding in 1986.

“I started as an intern, and now I’m ‘running the company,’ or at least the artistic portion of it,” smiled Lyndsay. “I’m not just living the ‘theater dream,’ I’m living the American dream! Although I wasn’t born and raised here, Sacramento has become my heart’s hometown, and B Street Theater is my home. This is where my knowledge and experience came to life. I have been committed to the mission and vision of B Street Theater for almost a decade and now can incorporate my own vision.”

B Street has a great line-up for this year and a reputation for premier shows. Lyndsay is also excited about promoting The Sofia as a home for nomadic art groups who can collaborate with local artists while utilizing the professional stage and resources.

“I love that people from Sacramento love and care about things that are ‘homegrown,’” Lyndsay shared. “The community wants to connect with local talent and artists who are invested here. I can’t imagine calling anywhere else home. Everyone who moves here can experience this when they become informed, inspired, and involved.”

CALIFORNIA STATE CAPITOL MUSEUM

10th Street and L Street, Sacramento

Begun in 1860 to be reminiscent of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., the Classical Revival-style California State Capitol was completed in 1874. In 1861, the legislative session was moved to the Merchants Exchange Building in San Francisco for one session because of massive flooding in Sacramento. The legislative chambers were first occupied in 1869 while construction continued. From 1862 to 1868, part of the Leland Stanford Mansion was used for the governor’s offices during Stanford’s tenure as the governor, and the legislature met in the Sacramento County Courthouse. While the California State Capitol Museum rooms are closed and no tours are being offered at this time, an enjoyable walk around the capitol grounds and a photo taken on its steps will qualify.
