IMPORTANT NUMBERS

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
▸ Benefit to homestead exemption: Florida law allows up to $50,000 to be deducted from the assessed value of a primary/permanent residence. The first $25,000 of value is entirely exempt. The second $25,000 exemption applies to the value between $50,000 - $75,000 and does not include a benefit on the school tax. After receiving the homestead exemption the first year, any annual increase in the assessed value is capped at the lower of 3% or the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), with certain exceptions. When the property is sold the homestead exemption is removed, the assessed value increases to just/market value for the new year. When you move and make a new application for homestead exemption you will be eligible to ‘port’ all or a portion of the capped value.
▸ Requirements: The owner must have legal or beneficial title by January 1 of the year of the application. The statutory filing deadline is March 1. If it falls on a weekend or legal holiday, then it would extend to the next business day.
- The owner must establish Hillsborough County as his/her legal domicile, reside on the subject property as of January 1 and be a US citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Owner must show proof of Florida residency (i.e. Driver license); a “Valid in Florida” designation on your Florida
driver license is not acceptable; a Florida Identification Card with an out of state driver license is not acceptable.
- If you are active duty military, you may qualify by providing us proof of Florida residency such as Florida driver license or LES (Leave and Earnings Statement).
- Proof of Citizenship (i.e. voter registration or permanent resident card).
- Owner should provide the address of the property, tax bill or deed/title.
- Social Security numbers for your spouse and any owner who resides on the property.
- If you have a mobile home, you will need your title or registration to the mobile home and the deed to the real estate. The mobile/manufactured home will need to be declared Real Property.
- If the property is held by a Trust, the beneficiary of the trust with the right to occupy the home may also be entitled to homestead exemption.
▸ Dates to apply: Applications are taken year round. The statutory filing deadline is March 1 with late-filed applications taken up to the 25th day after the mailing of the yearly Notice of Proposed Property Taxes (TRIM), which is typically mailed in August. After that period expires, Florida law does not permit the county property appraiser to accept an application for that calendar year.

CLOSE TO HOME BEACHES POPULAR

These beaches are popular among the FishHawk/Valrico/ Brandon locals because they are within about an hour drive, so you can visit for the day or a spend a night or two. Get out and explore the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast!
SIESTA KEY
Siesta Key has three beautiful beaches from which to choose: Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach.
Enjoying its reputation as one of America’s Best Beaches, Siesta Beach is made famous by its sugar-fine, quartz-white sand. It boasts activities like water sports and snorkeling. A short jaunt from the public beach is a village of outdoor dining, coffee shops and shopping, and the convenience of a trolley, making it one of the best Florida beaches for families.
Florida offers tax-free holidays for hurricane and school supplies.
FORT DE SOTO BEACH AND PARK
Fort De Soto Beach is easy to spot as a large pirate-ship playground stands near its entrance. Venture onto the beach here to discover the real treasure: a wide tidal pool begging to be splashed in. Kids run between the lagoon and the Gulf; loungers, people-watchers and shell-seekers scatter out along the white sand.
At the heart of the park where the Gulf meets Tampa Bay, you’ll find the historic Fort and Fort De Soto Batteries that give the park its name. At ground level, enter old artillery holds and firing galleys that make up the base of the coquina shell fort. You can also view mortar battery cannons aimed over the top of the fort and pointed at Tampa Bay, where invaders would have approached. Housed in a reconstruction of the fort’s old postal building, the museum tells the story of the fort through historic photographs, military documents and Spanish-American War artifacts.
ST. PETE BEACH
Averaging 361 days of sunshine per year, it’s easy to see why this beach has been ranked number one in the U.S. and number five in the world! White sandy beaches, plenty of sunshine, an abundance of hotels and resorts, and a variety of shopping and dining to enjoy.
PASS-A-GRILLE
Pass-A-Grille is at the southernmost end of St. Pete Beach. Historic Pass-A-Grille is a quaint, laid-back beach town where you can park your car and walk to the beach, boutiques, ice cream shop, outdoor art market, restaurants, rooftop bars, tennis courts and fishing piers. Enjoy the nightly sunset bell ringing at Paradise Grille, go deep sea fishing on Miss Pass-AGrille, fish off The Merry Pier, or take a ride out to Shell Key.

ANNA MARIA ISLAND
Anna Maria Island is a seven-mile-long slice of paradise. The beach, with its soft white sand and clear turquoise waters will lure you in for a day of soaking up the sunshine. Home to mom-and-pop shops and gourmet restaurants, you can spend your time sunbathing, fishing and kayaking, or browsing the charming boutique shops and art galleries. Best explored on two wheels or the island’s Island Trolley, explore historic Bridge Street, browse the Beach Market at Coquina Beach, visit the Anna Maria Island Historical Museum, or visit the charming fishing village of Cortez.
MADEIRA BEACH
Legend holds that a pirate named John LeVique was the first European to “settle” the Madeira Beach area. Today, Madeira Beach, a Gulf of Mexico beach city just west of St. Petersburg, is best known for the sea-themed John’s Pass Village and Boardwalk, which serves up shops and eateries and an 1,100-foot boardwalk along the Intracoastal. Madeira Beach’s 2.5-mile beach attracts devotees of sun and sea, and fishing in the primary sport activity. More grouper is brought into John’s Pass than any other place in the state. In addition, each October, Madeira Beach hosts the Seafood Festival at John’s Pass, which attracts as many as 130,000 visitors to its celebration of food, music, and arts and crafts.

“I have been working with Katie for over a year now on multiple projects and I cannot say enough about her communication, organization, and work ethic. She really puts the time in with her clients as well as suppliers and contractors. Slate Studios has been a pleasure to work with.”
- Jonathan G.
TREASURE ISLAND
The main draw for today’s visitors is not buried treasure, but the town’s three miles of white, sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. Go swimming, shelling, sunning, snorkeling, parasailing or simply walk the beach and take in a memorable sunset.
Head to what’s touted as the “world’s longest waterfront bar,” Gators Cafe & Saloon, to catch the sunset. This multi-level entertainment hub has everything from a tasting room to a tiki lounge, and it’s accessible by boat.
This big, wide community beach has better shells than most beaches, but get there early for the best ones.
CLEARWATER BEACH
Beautiful white sands and clear, shallow water make this beach an ideal playground for families. But really, everyone loves a beach this gorgeous. From the activity along the palm-lined Beach Walk Promenade to the serene shores of Sand Key Park, you’re sure to find your perfect spot in the sand on Clearwater Beach. Rent a cabana or beach chair and beach umbrella from a local vendor or walk toward the more residential north side of the beach for a little serenity away from the bustling scene of Pier 60 and Clearwater Marina. Getting here is a breeze, too. Take advantage of free parking in downtown Clearwater, then hop on the Clearwater Ferry for a traffic-free, sunshine-filled ride to the beach.

DREAM a fisherman’s
Written by Eric Spaulding, Owner of Queen Fleet Deep Sea Fishing

The Tampa Bay area offers a multitude of choices in fishing options! Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced fisher, it’s not hard to bend a rod 365 days a year! From freshwater lakes, rivers, and ponds to inshore grass flats and backwater creeks to offshore reefs, not many places can boast the ability to catch such a different array of species.
One allure of fishing the Tampa Bay area is the ease of access and the relatively simple methods of catching that trophy. It can be as easy as walking into your neighborhood superstore and purchasing an inexpensive rod and reel combo and assortment of artificial lures, then finding the closest retention pond that is sure to hold largemouth bass.
For those who are a little more adventurous, there are many inshore charter captains who can put you on trophy species such as snook and redfish as well as offshore charter boats offering anywhere from four-hour excursions to several day and night outings for large, tasty species such as snapper and grouper, as well as pelagic fish such as wahoo, mahi, and swordfish.
In addition to private charter outings, one can simply purchase a ticket and jump on a “head boat” (fish with other like-minded anglers on a larger boat); these types of vessels can be found from John’s Pass in South Pinellas County all the way to Tarpon Springs and in between.
For the beginner, it’s a great idea to stop into any of the dozens of local tackle shops to ask for advice. Most will find the local knowledge is quite friendly and willing to help get folks started, regardless of what type of fishing or species they are after. Furthermore, there are several books and magazines available pertaining to different types of fishing found in the Tampa Bay area.
If really large release-only gamefish is on your bucket list, the charter captains of Florida’s East Coast are only a couple hours’ drive away. But no place beats the Tampa Bay area for the access it offers to so many different types of fishing!

Dogs

Never has there been a better time for pets in Hillsborough County and the Tampa Bay area! Ranked as one of the most pet-friendly cities and regions in the nation, there’s never a shortage of things to do with our pets or resources to help us in our journey of being a pet parent.
As the downtown area and Channelside have been growing, so have the number of pet-friendly areas. Boasting four dog parks, there’s always something going on! The Riverwalk and Curtis Hixon Dog Park are a favorite. Many restaurants in the downtown area and Hyde Park have dog-friendly patios. Moving out away from downtown, the eastern part of Hillsborough also has many options with Saldino Park on Bryan Road, Mango Dog Park and the Plant City Dog Park. Many neighborhoods have also started incorporating dog park areas as the number of residents with pets has increased steadily over the past few years. And don’t forget about the local craft-beer boom too! Most of the craft-beer breweries allow pets inside or have a pet-friendly outside patio. Have a craft beer, relax and pet your pup! If you and your dog love the beach and water, check out Davis Island Beach Dog Park, which is just outside of downtown, and Picnic Island Beach Dog Park, which is near MacDill AFB. Both are great options if your dog likes to run free and play the water! A quick web search will give you a bunch of options for spending the day with your dog!
If you are thinking about adding a cat or dog to your family, please contact a local pet rescue to learn about the animals available for adoption. These are dedicated groups of volunteers that rescue abandoned cats and dogs. Here’s a few to check out – Makin’ Biscuits Rescuary (Lithia), New Life Dog Rescue (Riverview), 4 Lucky Dogs Pet Rescue (Valrico), and C.A.R.E Animal Shelter (Ruskin). There are many more! Most of the groups in the area have a Facebook page or their own website for additional information.

When you are out shopping for your food, treats and pet supplies, please consider visiting one of the smaller, family-owned pet stores in the area. There are so many options in this area aside from big box. In the Lithia and Valrico area, there is Dog Gone Holistic in FishHawk, as well as Earthwise Pet and Kim’s Natural Pet Foods, both on Lithia near Bloomingdale.
Have fun and explore the area! There are so many pet-friendly things to do and places to visit!

Couldn’t be happier with them. They always resolve the issues and are fairly priced. Will continue service with them.

10 Nearby Outdoor Destinations That Are Uniquely Florida

By Beth Eller, Valrico
As a native of South Alabama, I spent the majority of my formative years outdoors. There were always pick-up football games to be played, woods to be explored, or blackberries to be picked. As long as we were home before the porch light came on, all was right with the world. When my husband and I married and started our military adventure across this great country, adjusting to some of the colder climates in the places we called home was difficult to say the least. That’s why we were overjoyed to learn our final assignment would be MacDill Air Force Base. Along with our two children and two dogs, we made Valrico, FL, our home and decided to finally put down roots in a place where endless summer is not just a saying but a lifestyle.

One of my first orders of business after settling down in the “Sunshine State” was to figure out how to spend the nearly 250 days a year of blue skies and warm breezes. I quickly learned that, in addition to the world’s most beautiful beaches, we’re also close to some of the most pristine state parks and unique outdoor adventures. Here’s a list of some of my favorite outings within a day’s drive. These spots have the locals coming back year after year, and some are right in our own backyard!
Lithia Springs Conservation Park
3932 Lithia Springs Rd., Lithia, FL 33547
You won’t have to go far to discover this hidden gem. Located just off of Lithia Pinecrest between Lithia and Valrico, it’s both beautiful and convenient. Go for a swim in the crystal-clear waters of the spring, have a picnic, visit the playground, hike the scenic trails, or plan a complete weekend of fishing and bird watching at one of the 45 campsites. it’s a Grand Canyon-size adventure on a Lithia budget!
Alafia River State Park
14326 S. CR 39, Lithia, FL 33547
Even though you don’t have to leave Lithia to get to Alafia River State Park, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world. Cultivated from an old phosphate mine, it’s paradise to mountain bikers, backpackers, and equestrians. There are over 20 miles of trails through sweeping elevation changes, dense green forests, and sparkling lakes. Boating and fishing along the Alafia River are also popular park activities. Stop by any time to set up camp, cast a line, or just relax and enjoy this rare undisturbed piece of nature.

Keel Farms
5210 Thonotosassa Rd. , Plant City, FL 33565
Just down the road in Plant City is Keel Farms. What began as a nursery and fruit farm in 1981 has turned into a spot with something for just about everyone to enjoy. Visit the winery and brewery for weekend tours where you can sample their handcrafted wines, beers, or ciders and enjoy farm fresh cuisine whipped up by their onsite chef. They also have regularly scheduled events that are fun for the whole family, including the Tampa Bay Blueberry Festival and live music featuring local artists. You won’t go home empty handed either. The farm has monthly U-pick events where you can fill your baskets full of organically grown fruits, and produce such as blueberries, strawberries, watermelon and peaches.

Stop by the museum to explore artifacts and learn about the pre-historic coastal dwellers who once settled this land. When you need a break from the beach, check out a bioluminescence tour at Indian River Lagoon just off of the famous A1A. The Indian River Lagoon is a grouping of three lagoons on the Atlantic Coast of Florida and is one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America. Because of its diversity, it’s home to special types of plankton and jellies that can naturally produce their own light. The best way to see this phenomenon is by taking an evening bioluminescent tour. Check out the bioluminescent jellies November through May and return June through October for a paddle tour to see plankton light up the lagoon. HITTING THE
MOUNTAIN BIKING
IN ALAFIA PARK
Written by River Hills Resident, Cher Cleveland urrideguide.com
I am a River Hills resident and moved here five years ago just for mountain biking at Alafia Park. It is one of the best mountain bike parks in the country! You might be wondering how there is mountain biking in Florida without the mountains.
Yes you heard right! Not only does Florida have mountain biking, but it has some of the best trails in the country! And the best part is you can mountain bike Florida all year round. In fact, Alafia River State Park is open 365 days a year (even holidays!).

Alafia River State Park is known for its frequent changes in elevation, punchy hills, huge wood berms, smooth trails, techy trails, steep, fast descents, and jumps and drops of all sizes. Alafia has over 17 miles of mountain bike trails ranging from mild two-tracks to expert double blacks. There is also a full-time trail boss to maintain and improve Alafia’s mountain bike trails to keep them running fast and fun.
Alafia Park is a rare jewel because it was once a phosphate mine in the early to mid-1900s. Excavators dug deep trenches and stacked the dirt into tall steep jagged hills. When the phosphate mine closed, they had two choices: reclaim the land and turn it back to an ecologically usable safe land or donate it to the government as is. The old mine was transformed into a mountain bike park covered in green tropical vegetation and inhabited by animals galore. It is hard not to spot a deer on any given day. You can also see many tortoises, turtles, alligators, snakes, armadillos, rabbits and more.
As a state park volunteer, member of the Alafia Trail Crew, and a certified mountain bike coach and trail guide, I highly encourage members of our community to come check out Alafia River State Park. They can bring their own mountain bike or rent one at the park from UBC. For first-time bikers, I recommend a guided tour where a trail guide will prevent you from getting lost or stranded on a difficult trail and are available to give you heads-up about what lies ahead.
Visit these sites for more information and to help you plan your trip to Alafia. There’s an adventure waiting for you!

AWARENESS&
THE GREATEST TOOLS TO WEATHER A STORM PREPAREDNESS

INCREASE YOUR AWARENESS AND SOLIDIFY YOUR PREPAREDNESS
1. Develop an evacuation plan.
1. Meeting place for family members.
2. Evacuation zone.
3. Evacuation routes.
2. Learn where your nearest shelter is located and know how you will get there.
3. Set up emergency alerts.
1. Emergency Alert System (EAS).
2. Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA).
4. Compile your supply kit and make sure it’s portable in the case of evacuation.
1. Water, food and medications to last at least three days for all family members and pets.
2. Cash, clean clothes, first aid kit, batteries, flashlights, towels or blankets.
3. Battery-powered radio, solar-powered USB chargers, portable camping stove and generator.
5. Ensure your car has plenty of gas.
6. Monitor the flooding during the storm.
7. Strengthen Your Home.
1. Trim trees and/or remove dead broken branches.
2. Clear out and secure gutters, secure downspouts and soffits.
3. Install storm shutters or purchase plywood panels.
Hurricane Season is June 1 to November 30
Surrounded by 1,350 miles of coastline, Florida has more hurricane landfalls than any other state in the United States. The Gulf of Mexico to its west and the Atlantic Ocean to its east, Florida’s warm gulf waters and westerly winds set the stage for storms and flash flooding.
The six-month Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30. Peaking from mid-August to late October, Floridians will experience severe weather including thunderstorms, tornados and hurricanes. These events can cause damaging winds, water surges, and power outages, culminating in weather-related disasters.
The availability of disaster-related products begins to shrink the moment a tropical storm in the Atlantic is identified as having hurricane potential. Once a storm develops into a hurricane, Floridians tend to swarm the stores and empty the shelves. Long lines form at gas stations to fill vehicles, gas cans, gas-powered equipment, etc., potentially leading to a shortage of fuel. Don’t wait, act now!

4. Seal exterior wall and/or window gaps, seal roof leaks and/or unsealed shingles.
5. Consider purchasing a chainsaw, tarps and gas cans.

COEXIST
BY MAINTAINING YOUR DISTANCE
THERE ARE MORE THAN 1.3 MILLION ALLIGATORS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. THEY EXIST IN EVERY FLORIDIAN COUNTY, INHABITING OUR SWAMPLANDS, LAKES, PONDS AND RIVERS. WHILE THEY PREFER FRESH WATER, THEY CAN BE FOUND IN BRACKISH WATER, TOO. IF THERE IS A BODY OF WATER, IT IS BEST TO ASSUME THAT THERE IS AN ALLIGATOR IN IT OR SOMEWHERE NEARBY.
Adult alligators can reach up to 14 feet long and weigh as much as 1,000 pounds. Their lifespan ranges from 30-50 years, although captive alligators have lived well into their 80’s.
Juvenile alligators eat insects, small fish and easily accessible prey. Adults eat fish, frogs, birds, turtles, snakes, and small mammals. Larger alligators will also eat other alligators, white-tailed deer, wild hogs, and even pets.
Alligators were hunted to near extinction in the southeastern United States during the early to mid-1900s. Following Federal and State laws banning their hunting in the 1970s, the alligator population was replenished.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) established an annual statewide recreational alligator harvest model in the 1980s. This model ensures the species’ overall welfare while preventing the overpopulation of alligators.
If you have a nuisance alligator in your area, contact the FWC office or call 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286). Note: Nuisance alligators are not relocated, they are euthanized in Florida.

HUNTING SEASON
Florida’s statewide alligator hunting season is August 15th through November 1st. While a Florida hunting or fishing license is not necessary, a Statewide Alligator Hunt Permit is required. The permit is a limited entry permit. The FWC receives more than 15k applicants vying for roughly 7k permits.
The FWC facilitates an annual count of alligators in the state of Florida. The count dictates the number of permits issued. Awarded applicants receive an alligator trapping license authorizing the holder to harvest two alligators during specific assigned dates and hunting boundaries. It is a felony to hunt outside of the FWC harvest model.
MATING SEASON
From mid-April to early June, alligator mating season comes alive. Both males and females have increased aggression. Males become more territorial and hostile, while females, upon laying eggs, become protective and defensive. While humans should always avoid interaction with alligators, it is especially critical during mating season, including encountering their nests. Eggs typically hatch from mid-August to early September.
SAFETY TIPS
▸ Do not feed alligators, it is illegal and encourages them to approach humans for food.
▸ Maintain your distance, at least 50 feet away, as an alligator can outrun humans within the first 20-30 feet of exiting water.
▸ Swim in designated areas, never at night, and keep children and pets away from water.
▸ If an alligator begins moving towards you, run as fast as you can and make a lot of noise.

STATE AND LOCAL HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY
PARKS
Explore winding rivers and endless shoreline – pioneer through forests and swamps, deep caverns and towering dunes – dive into shimmering emerald springs – and discover historical places that connect us to generations past. Florida’s 175 award-winning state parks hold the key to real, treasured memories – past, present and future.
Visit any one of the amazing state parks, where time stops – if just for a moment –to create memories that last a lifetime.
In addition to Florida’s State Parks, there are numerous Local Parks where you can enjoy, camping, fishing, swimming, biking, kayaking, horseback riding and experience prime examples of Florida’s unspoiled natural vegetation and diverse eco-systems right in your own back yard.
STATE PARKS

HILLSBOROUGH RIVER STATE PARK
This diverse park offers a refuge from city life with its seven miles of nature trails and ample places to cool off in the water.
Except for occasional reenactments, the cannon and guns are now silent at Fort Foster. No longer do Seminole Indians have to fight to keep a foothold in Florida, and soldiers no longer guard a strategic river crossing. The reconstructed fort and its surroundings are now part of Hillsborough River State Park.
Besides a living history lesson, visitors can kayak or canoe class II river rapids, rare in Florida, hike seven miles of nature trails and swim in an ADA accessible swimming pool.
Take a walk along our Wetlands Trail which winds through multiple ecosystems, a typical feature found in Florida.
As you traverse the path, walk under towering cypress domes, through low-lying wetlands and past stretching fields of Mesic Flatwoods. The variation in topography and soil types makes this all possible.
Having all these ecosystems so close together provides a perfect habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. Predators such as hawks and bobcats peruse the area looking for their next meal. Enthusiastic birdwatchers will be delighted at the vast array of birds that can be seen flying about.
Most notably, there are dozens of rare plants that dot the landscape. One notable rare plant is the Blazing Starflower. This delicate, high-reaching plant blooms from the top-down, unlike other flowers that tend to bloom from the bottom up. The pink and purple petals love the sun and are a favorite for monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. 15402 U.S. 301 North, Thonotosassa, FL 33592
SKYWAY FISHING PIER STATE PARK
When the new Sunshine Skyway Bridge was built over Tampa Bay, connecting St. Petersburg with Sarasota, the old bridge was turned into the world’s longest fishing pier.
Anglers love being able to park their cars or campers within a few feet of their favorite fishing spot. The bridge is lighted at night, so anglers can see to rig a line, bait the hook, and get a good look at their catch. The light also attracts many species of fish after sundown.
Common catches include snook, tarpon, grouper, black sea bass, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, sheepshead, red snapper, pompano and many more. Snacks, drinks, bait and fishing supplies are available for purchase. Restroom facilities are available. 4905 34th Street South #5000, St. Petersburg, FL 33711 (Pinellas County)

LITTLE MANATEE RIVER STATE PARK
The Little Manatee River begins in a swampy area near Fort Lonesome and flows almost 40 miles before emptying into Tampa Bay.
The river has been designated an Outstanding Florida Water and is part of the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the rare ecosystems found within the park, including sand pine and oak scrub and oxbow wetlands, which can be explored by hiking, canoeing, horseback riding or camping.
The Little Manatee River flows for 4.5 miles through 11 unique natural communities within the park. The park boasts one of the premier hiking trails of Southwest Florida, a 6.5-mile stacked loop located in the wilderness area in the north half of the park.
The Oxbow Nature Trail, accessible from the main picnic area in the south half of the park, makes a 1-mile loop along scrub ridges that skirt the main river and an oxbow wetland. In addition, over 15 miles of equestrian and multi-use trails meander through the southern half of the park.
Picnic in one of the riverside pavilions or stay for the night in the full-facility campground. Little Manatee River State Park is one of the best-kept secrets of Hillsborough County with a little something for everyone.
Within the mass of foliage that makes up Little Manatee River State Park you will find some of the most peaceful camping opportunities within Florida. With sites for tents and RVs, there are a number of accommodations for your desired camping experience. Each site has a fire ring, picnic table, and a water and electrical pedestal.
This park is especially unique in that there are areas for equestrian camping as well. Enjoy trotting along over 15 miles of equestrian trails and then spend the night in one of the four equestrian campground sites in the park. 215 Lightfoot Rd., Wimauma, FL 33598
ALAFIA RIVER STATE PARK
Standing out from the relatively flat topography of Central Florida is Alafia River State Park, a reclaimed phosphate mine with some of the most radical elevation changes in the state. This makes it a hot spot for mountain bikers, who traverse the scenic and challenging International Mountain Bike Association trails.
Equestrians and hikers can explore 20 miles of hilly trails through forests and flatwoods, stopping to relax and admire one of the park’s pristine lakes.
Canoeing and fishing opportunities are also available along the South Prong of the Alafia River with some lakes scattered throughout the park.
The park also offers picnic pavilions, a playground, a fullfacility campground and a full-service bike shop. 14326 S CR 39, Lithia, FL 33547
LOCAL PARKS

Among its main attractions is a 700-acre reservoir used for canoeing, boating, and fishing. Also included is a 3-mile trail that offers equestrians, hikers, and bird watchers a pleasant trip through pine flatwoods and hardwood hammocks. Please note, we do not provide horseback riding rentals. You must bring your own horse.
The park also has a disc golf course for those Frisbee enthusiasts who want to enhance their disc-throwing skills, while the beach volleyball court provides the players a scenic view of the sunset. Edward Medard Park also offers picnic shelters, a boardwalk, a playground for the kids, and an observation platform overlooking the reservoir.
6140 Edward Medard Pkwy, Plant City, FL 33567
LETTUCE LAKE PARK
Lettuce Lake Conservation Park is one of Hillsborough County’s most visited parks. More than half of the park’s property lies in the natural floodplain of the Hillsborough River, consisting of a hardwood swamp forest. The remainder of the park consists of hardwood hammocks and pine flatwoods plant communities.
The park features wooded picnic areas and playgrounds, a 1.25-mile paved exercise trail and 3,500-foot boardwalk with an observation tower provides scenic views of the Hillsborough River. Park ranger and volunteer-led nature education tours are available on weekends. Canoe and kayaks rentals provide up-close encounters with a variety of aquatic birds and wildlife. 6920 E Fletcher Ave., Tampa, FL 33637
FUN FACT
Watch out for snakes but keep in mind they’re not all bad. In fact, good ones like black racer snakes and scarlet kingsnakes keep rodent and lizard populations in check. But pygmy rattlers and corals are highly venomous.

EDWARD MEDARD PARK

ALDERMAN’S FORD PARK
The park’s most popular attraction is a 1.9 mile paved loop that follows the north and south prongs of the Alafia River – one of the most popular canoe spots in the state. The loop, which is hiker, dog walker, and bicycle-friendly, links with a boardwalk and foot bridges, leading into shaded woods of gigantic cypress and oak trees.
Visit Alderman’s Ford Conservation Park and enjoy a day of birdwatching, fishing or hiking the lush woods. The park also hosts four remote campsites for anyone seeking a real wilderness experience without going too far from home.
100 Alderman’s Ford Park Dr., Plant City, FL, FL 33567
LITHIA SPRINGS PARK
Well-known for its natural spring which flows yearround, cool, clean water into the Alafia River, the 160acre site is also a popular camping spot.
After setting up camp, hikers can explore the woodsy trails and its diverse plant communities, river cypress swamps, and hardwood hammocks. But it is the natural spring that serves as the park’s major attraction, which–courtesy of the water’s 72-degree temperature–provides an excellent swimming experience all year long. In addition to swimming, visitors can fish and play volleyball. There are also benches and picnic tables near the playground for the parents to rest and chat, while their kids can play at the park.

Children’s Gasparilla Parade
Where: Bayshore Boulevard, Tampa Mateys of all ages jump and shout for beads as over 100 parade floats make their way down Tampa Bay’s Bayshore Boulevard. Since 1947, families, friends and neighbors bring their own krewes out to take in Gasparilla’s Children’s Parade.
The parade is all about elaborate floats, impeccably dressed krewes, booming marching bands, whirling dancers, and the familiar faces of schools and community organizations.
This year’s parade begins at Bay to Bay Boulevard and Bayshore, ending along Edison Avenue, nearly a mile and a half away. It ends, of course, with a bang. What pirate parade would be complete without some monstrous “pirate-technic” explosions? Take a gander as they recreate the battle between Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla and Tampa. The pirates win every year, arghhh!
Gasparilla Pirate Fest
Where: Tampa
Named for pirate Jose Gaspar, who terrorized the coastal waters of West Florida during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Tampa’s annual Gasparilla celebration begins with the Gasparilla Invasion. Over 750 swashbucklers invade Tampa Bay aboard the majestic pirate ship “Jose Gasparilla,” kicking off a full schedule of pirate-themed events.
Once ashore, the captain and his Mystic Krewe celebrate their takeover of the city with a four-mile-long Parade of Pirates, unloading untold Gasparilla treasures for visitors and locals to plunder. The third largest parade in the United States, the Parade of Pirates is attended by 300,000 onlookers, many donning period-themed pirate garb.
The festivities continue into the evening at the Gasparilla Pirate Fest Street Festival with live music, food and entertainment.
