Tommy Butler is a Cache Valley Photographer and Videographer who moved to Nibley in 2019 during the pandemic, to help family. His passions for music and the arts have been a lifelong pursuit. His photography has been published in numerous publications, both in print and online and has won several awards. He works regularly on projects supporting local Cache Valley businesses and loves to serve our community in any way he can. He is passionate about the outdoors, road cycling & mountain biking, and is fully devoted to his family. He and his lovely wife have 4 children and have been married for 21 years.

LOGAN RIVER TRAIL: CANYON ENTRANCE PARK
Difficulty: Easy ▸
Length: 5.6 miles
Elevation Start/End: 4,900/5,400 feet
Features: The rushing Logan River attracts many types of wildlife, like beavers, moose and birds, especially where it joins the Little Bear River.
Trail Information: Paralleling the Logan River, the trail is great for a pleasant, relaxing stroll as it goes south above Bridger Campground and ends at Spring Hollow.
WAYNE'S LOOP TRAIL
Difficulty: Easy
Length: 2.9 miles
Elevation gain: 232 ft.
Features: Located in the hills of Mendon, this trail is one the whole family can do and enjoy. The first half of the trail is heavily shaded, while the second half offers beautiful scenic mountain and valley views.
Trail information: trail is a loop that has little elevation gain. Trail is used by hikers, trail runners and bikers.

HIGHLINE TRAIL
Difficulty: Moderate ▸ Length: 3.4 miles
Elevation Gain: 344 feet
Features: Close to First Dam, offering sweeping views of the Wellsville Mountains, Utah State, First Dam, and the Logan Temple. Great for sunrises or sunsets.
Trail Information: Park at First Dam, go through the tunnel under Highway 89, and switch back to the top of the hill. There are steep drop-offs on this trail, exercise caution.

OLD JARDINE JUNIPER
Difficulty: Moderate ▸ Length: 10.9 miles
Elevation Start/End: 5,400/7,200 feet
Features: The ancient, alive juniper on the Logan Canyon fork of the trail is the oldest known Rocky Mountain juniper at 1,500 years of age.
Trail Information: This longer, easier trail overlooks the meadows, aspen groves and wildflowers of Cottonwood Canyon and Logan Canyon.

CRIMSON TRAIL
Difficulty: Difficult ▸ Length: 4.7 miles
Elevation Start/End: 5,200/6,000 feet
Features: A large, steep wall with some of the hardest climbing in Utah, the China Wall looks similar to the Great Wall of China and provides a view that is worth the effort in climbing it.
Trail Information: The moderate trail looks down the Guinavah Campground and makes for some cautious descending, as there are steep slopes and sheer cliffs near the Great Wall.

DAM TRAIL

DRY CREEK TRAIL
Difficulty: Intermediate
Length: 4.4 miles out-and-back trail
Features: Beautiful trees and vegetation throughout the trail
Trail Information: From parking lot, take the short section of dirt road around the north side of the basin. Trail continues past a national Forest signboard and past a couple of gates. Trees start to come in closer around trail and provides nice shade.

WIND CAVE
Difficulty: Moderate ▸ Length: 4 miles
Elevation Start/End: 5,100/6,000 feet
Features: The natural, triple arch cave provides a fantastic view of the north side of the Logan Canyon.
Trail Information: This established trail is steep and short, making it great for hikers of any skill level.

NAOMI PEAK
Difficulty: Moderate ▸ Length: 8.7 miles
Elevation Start/End: 8,000/9,979 feet
Features: Naomi Peak is the highest point in the Bear River Range at around 10,000 feet, providing a breathtaking view of all Cache County.
Trail Information: The trail is welldefined and rocky, and it gives many a feeling of remote backcountry. Also, the trail is part of the Mt. Naomi Peak National Hiking Trail.



TONY GROVE NATURE TRAIL
Difficulty: Easy ▸ Length: 1.2 miles
Elevation Gain: 59 feet
Features: Wildflowers are in abundance from late June-September. Steep rock formations that tower above the lake. The trail winds around the lake. There is a beach area on the south end of the lake. Paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks are allowed on the lake. Fishing is also popular. No motorboats allowed. Overnight camping available. Picnic tables available.
Trail Information: Easy hike for all ages. Heavily trafficked hike.

ATV, SNOWMOBILE TRAILS AND HIKING

FRANKLIN BASIN
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Location: Access via US 89 in Logan Canyon, near mile marker 484.
Length: About 20 miles of dirt road. Road goes into Idaho. Features: Gorgeous mountain peaks, and huge open mountain valleys. Plenty of rocks and trails to meander off on.
Trail Information: Large parking lot that is plowed in the winter. Tent camping & trailer/motorhomes areas are all throughout the area. Franklin Basin road follows the the Logan River. Several destinations are accessible, including Steam Mill Canyon, Peterson Hollow, Steep Hollow and Crescent Lake.
LOCAL TIP

I enjoy hiking Logan Canyon. My favorite trail is the Crimson Trail. It offers a great workout and a spectacular view at the top. - Cayden


WHITE PINE LAKE
Difficulty: Moderate ▸ Length: 7.8 miles
Elevation Start/End: 8,000/8,400 feet
Features: The intense blue color of White Pine Lake attracts many visitors, from day hikers to campers. The lake is surrounded by meadows, streams, valleys and other mountainous features.
Trail Information: Easy to follow, the pleasant trail is great for a day hike or an overnight trip year-round.


TEMPLE FORK SAWMILL TRAIL
Difficulty: Moderate ▸ Length: 5.3 miles
Elevation Start/End: 5,960/6,600 feet
Features: Remnants of a burned-down sawmill, which was built in 1883, can be seen at the end of the trail. Pioneer cabins can also be seen here. Features a river.
Trail Information: Along Temple Fork Creek, this easy trail is good for all skill levels and offers a variety of activity options.
HIGH CREEK CANYON TAIL
Difficulty: Difficult ▸ Length: 11.6 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,566 feet
Features: Beautiful scenery throughout the hike with wildflowers, creeks, gorgeous meadows, small waterfall and lake.
Trail Information: Located near Lewiston, Utah. Access road to trail is rough, truck with clearance is recommended. *Not located in Logan Canyon

Whether you’re looking to spend a day canoeing in the scenic surroundings of Tony Grove or a day waterskiing at Hyrum Lake, water sports in the valley are in high demand with many locations to accommodate.

CUTLER WETLANDS MAZE
Experience Cache Valley from a whole new vantage point, canoe in the Cutler Wetlands Maze, and experience our valley in all its splendor. Meander among the giant cattails and view a variety of birds and wild animals. Cutler Marsh Marina, 200 N approximately 4800 W, off Route 30.



FIRST DAM
Located at the mouth of Logan Canyon is First Dam, offering a scenic, grassy park, fishing dock, and picnic tables by the reservoir. Great place to gather for a picnic and games. Bring your kayak, canoe, or paddleboards for a little fun on the water. The reservoir is stocked with fish, so fishing is a popular activity at First Dam. Hyrum Lake

MANTUA RESERVOIR
Located between Brigham City and Logan. Popular 550-acre reservoir, great for recreational boating and fishing with an easy access boat ramp and sandy shoreline. This reservoir is stocked with fish including bass, bluegill and yellow perch. Along the water’s edge, you will find kayaks and paddleboards galore with sunbathers looking on. In walking distance from the shoreline is Little Valley Country Store offering paddle-boards, kayak rentals and bike rentals and fishing tackle. If you’re hungry, you’re in for a treat at Sydney’s Diner, adjacent to Little Valley Country store. Tucked away in Cache Valley, this beautiful 450-acre manmade lake offers many recreation opportunities including boating, waterskiing, jet-skiing, yearround fishing and camping. Surrounded by tall shade trees and grass, Hyrum Park is an excellent place for an afternoon picnic, or spend the weekend camping and boating. A local favorite for weekend fun and recreation. TONY GROVE LAKE
Come experience the crown jewel of the Bear River Range; this glacial lake greets visitors with an explosion of wildflowers and beautiful mountain vistas. Tony Grove was formed by powerful and slow-moving glaciers; visitors enjoy climbing the huge boulders deposited around the lake. Kayak around the lake and take in the gorgeous scenery. Picnic tables, boardwalks and sandy beach areas are accessible around the lake. No motorboats are allowed on this lake. Camping overnight is available at one of the 34 campsites. Local tip: Be sure to bring cash or check, as there is a parking fee around $10 per vehicle.

Beautiful boardwalk and trail with scenic views of Logan Public Golf Course and Wellsville mountains. Path winds around the Logan River. Large grass fenced field for dogs to play, just off the trail. In summer months, you can raft down the river.

Memorial park offers sand area, multiple slides and climbing structures, misters to keep the kids cool and entertained. The park is fenced in, so kids are safe to wander around. Multiple benches and restrooms available. This park adjoins a larger park next door that offers pavilions, baseball fields and a playground. Wellmaintained and lots of fun.

My favorite summer activity is paddleboarding at First Dam with my family. Lawn games and a picnic always follow.

TRAPPER PARK » 1497 S. 1600 W, Logan
The park borders the Logan River on the north and includes a gravel road that connects to a half-acre grass area with picnic tables and a fire pit. The main feature for the park is its 2-mile trail extension of the Logan River Trail. Has a playground and bathroom facilities. This is also a great place to float the Logan River.

WILLOW PARK

One of the favorite parks in the valley, offering three playgrounds, a pond with fishing deck and ducks, batting cages, baseball field, horseshoeing, and even a little stage. Well-maintained bathroom facilities, picnic tables, &and pavilions with BBQs. Located near the Logan Zoo.
