LESS THAN A MONTH, I WILL BE ATTENDING MY FIRST NAMA Show — and I can’t wait. I joined Automatic Merchandiser just after last year’s NAMA Show, so this will be my first opportunity to experience the largest show for the convenience services industry. It almost goes without saying that the convenience services industry is getting smarter, faster and more customer-centric — except I will say it, because during nearly every conversation that our team has, with technology providers, operators, brokers and food and beverage CPG companies, that customer-first focus is top of mind. Whether it’s selecting products to stock, technology to address customer complaints or refund requests, optimized restocking — each of these has at its heart a focus on giving the customer what he or she wants. A poor customer experience will turn away a customer and, worse yet, can serve as the worst kind of word-of-mouth marketing you can have.

To help you prepare for The NAMA Show, our Bob Tullio interviewed industry leaders and asked: “What products made for operators are you currently most excited about?” and “What does your company have on the drawing board that operators might see at the upcoming NAMA Show?” Look for insights from companies like 365 Retail Markets, AVS Companies, Cantaloupe Inc., Gimme, Panoptyc and ProWatch Solutions, among others.

It almost goes without saying that the convenience services industry is getting smarter, faster and more customer-centric.

Also in this issue, we debut the winning and runner-up products in our annual Products of the Year contest. This year’s winners — and the entries — reflected market trends such as the continuing emphasis on healthy convenience and sustainability. In a crowded field, these 13 winning companies and the 13 runners up show that consumers’ preferences are changing, and operators should change with them to optimize sales.

Speaking of market trends and sustainability, contributor Joy LePree examines how healthy hydration drinks contribute to wellness and sustainability trends in the office convenience channels. Industry thought leaders from CPG brands such as Perfect Hydration, Hint, Sparkling Ice, Clearly Canadian and Chlorophyll Water offer their take on the hydration and functional beverage space.

In our operator showcase, contributing writer Adrienne Klein profiles Fresh & Easy Markets, an Arizona independent that has grown to more than $4 million in annual revenue in less than three years. Company CEO Jason Postl emphasizes how customer service as well as a focus on innovation have made all the difference.

Sustainability AI

Sustainability and are hot business trends for 2025

Sustainability and the use of AI would seem to be far apart from each other, but as operators attempt to accommodate the experience that customers seek, they are both roads that lead to success in B2B business climate.

IN A RECENT EPISODE OF VENDING & OCS NATION PODCAST, I OUTlined key business development strategies that were designed to ensure your success in 2025. At least one business expert has validated some of the strategies that I have been promoting for years as a key to success in 2025, in

addition to focusing on the importance of the customer experience — an ongoing theme.

FOCUS ON CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Make CSR — corporate social responsibility — a front-and-center defining characteristic of your company, a key aspect of your business model. CSR can involve charitable giving, committing to environmental sustainability, reducing your carbon footprint or creating educational opportunities for your employees, for instance.

In a Forbes article, “The 5 Biggest Business Trends For 2025 Everyone Must Be Ready for Now,” Bernard Marr, author of the article and 20 business advisory books, concurs. “Driven by both regulatory pressure and consumer demand, the move towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable business practices is certain to be a key

driver of change in 2025,” wrote Marr. “Most pressing of all, though, is the need to keep pace with changing customer demands, with data overwhelmingly showing that green credentials are a key factor in buying decisions.”

TRY AI FOR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

More advice from me: Give AI for business development a test drive. Gil Cargill is an industry consultant who I’ve talked about before. He’s developed programs specifically for vending, OCS and micro market operators, and he’s offered VendingMarketWatch.com readers and listeners a favorable program that allows an operator to dip their toe in the water and give AI for business development a serious shot.

“We’ve spent the last couple of years being wowed by the potential of generative AI and hearing about how it’s going to change the world. But 2025 is the year I believe we will start to see organizations move beyond the hype and start integrating generative AI into business strategy,” wrote Marr.

In “Human Plus AI: Redefining Work In The Age Of Collaborative Intelligence,” Marr noted that “according to Accenture’s research, generative AI will transform more than 40% of working hours across industries, with six business functions seeing over half of their work hours reshaped through automation, augmentation, and collaboration.”

As Cargill points out, now is the time to begin the use of AI as a business development tool. “The

operators who are early adopters will enjoy a significant competitive advantage,” he said.

Marr also beats the same drum we have been hearing in the convenience services industry for years: Customer experience is king, and he advocates the use of AI to generate greater insights.

By 2025, customer experience will be the defining factor that sets businesses apart in an increasingly competitive marketplace. As industries evolve and consumers become more selective, companies that prioritize seamless, highly personalized and memorable interactions will gain a significant edge. Beyond traditional competition on price and quality, today’s consumers expect brands to engage with them on their terms — delivering consistently exceptional

service tailored to their individual needs, Marr wrote.

Using AI and data analytics can help businesses understand the experience that customers are seeking. “AI and data analytics let businesses gather deeper insights into customer preferences and behavior, enabling ‘hyper-personalization at scale.’

Every interaction is informed by real-time data, ensuring that customers feel they are treated as valued individuals,” Marr said. “Omnichannel strategies are also becoming more sophisticated, ensuring a smooth transition between online and offline

touchpoints and providing a unified brand experience, regardless of where or how they choose to engage. This means businesses that put customer experience at the heart of everything they do will reap the rewards in 2025.”

Marr encourages businesses to focus on resilience, and again, AI is a key element. Resilience goes beyond simply enduring challenges, he says, requiring the ability to adapt swiftly and integrate flexibility into core operations. Navigating disruptions such as supply chain breakdowns, skills or labor shortages

Using AI and data analytics can help businesses understand the experience that customers are seeking.

— and the potential for external crises — demands a proactive approach. Understanding these risks is essential for companies aiming to stay ahead. With their predictive power, technologies like AI can play a crucial role in shaping this preparedness, he added.

“More than just ‘weathering the storm,’ resilience means developing the capability to respond to the unexpected, pivoting swiftly when conditions make it necessary into the foundations of the business. Understanding how risks like supply chain disruption, skills shortages, and even the likelihood of future pandemics could impact operations is critical in order to build the capacity to respond proactively. With its predictive capability, technology like AI is sure to play a role,” wrote Marr.

Marr adds, “As we move into 2025, it’s clear that businesses must be ready to adapt to a rapidly evolving landscape. From leveraging generative AI to embracing sustainability and enhancing customer experiences, the trends shaping the future are both exciting and transformative. By staying proactive and building resilience in the face of uncertainty, companies can position themselves to not only survive, but thrive in the coming year.” ■

Quenching a thirst for wellness

Healthy hydration drinks support wellness and sustainability trends in office and convenience channels.

Driven by on-the-go wellness trends, healthier hydration products are quickly becoming the drink of choice in workplace convenience channels. And, as still water, sparkling water and flavored water continue to outperform sodas and high calorie offerings in office coffee service (OCS), convenience and micro markets, new and innovative “better-for-you” hydration options are flowing into these outlets.

Bottled water has long been a staple in the workplace and convenience markets, with a majority of Americans — 88% — saying they consume bottled water, according to a national survey conducted by the Harris Poll on behalf of the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA).

In recent years, bottled water has edged out other beverages across all outlets. The IBWA survey also shows that consumers’ thirst for still, sparkling, unflavored and flavored water surpasses that of other drinks, with 69% of respondents saying bottled water is among their most preferred non-alcoholic beverages, compared to soda at 61% and coffee at 60%.

A THIRST FOR WELLNESS AT WORK

“People are increasingly choosing beverages with fewer calories, so they are shifting away from less healthy packaged drinks and are choosing the healthiest option — bottled water,” says Jill Culora, IBWA’s vice president of communications. Consumers clearly agree. According to the IBWA study, of those who say bottled water is among their most preferred beverages, 59% deem no calories as important when selecting a drink, and 67% say a lack of artificial sweeteners influences their choice.

Jared Smith, executive vice president of commercial and business development with Perfect Hydration Alkaline Water, says his company also sees the shift away from old-school consumption habits in favor of more wholesome options.

“In general, the demand for healthier drinks is stronger than ever. While a midday sugary soda used to be a normal occurrence, soda consumption has decreased by 25% since its peak in 2000,” says Smith. “Consumers are searching for more functional beverages, opting for sugar-free brands and drinking more water at home and in the workplace.”

Alex Edwards, senior national sales director, foodservice and alternative channels, with Hint Inc., says his company has also seen consumer preference for healthier hydration options spill over into the workplace.

“Consumers in the workplace are increasingly reading labels, avoiding unhealthy products and gravitating towards better-for-you products,” says Edwards. “The human body struggles to metabolize products high in sugar and artificial sweeteners, especially in a sedentary office environment, so promoting healthier products in the workplace is in everyone’s best interest.”

The success of Hint’s flavored waters — including still waters infused with essential oils for a naturally fruity taste and sparkling waters enhanced with electrolytes for a fizzy experience — in workplace convenience channels proves it. “Hint products, a top item in OCS channels, provide guilt-free, grab-and-go convenience because they have no sugar, calories or artificial sweeteners, so consumers can stay hydrated by drinking Hint in the workplace all day long,” says Edwards.

Seeing an opportunity, Clearly Canadian recently entered the workplace convenience channel in a partnership with Vistar, according to Chris Andrews, vice president, away from home,

foodservice, with The Clearly Food & Beverage Co. LLC.

“Our mid-calorie, all-natural sparkling spring water is an ideal alternative for micro markets and vending in workplace settings, offering a refreshing change from traditional waters, diet sodas and full-calorie sodas,” says Andrews. “Clearly Canadian sparkling water provides a range of flavors that satisfy the demand for healthier, flavorful beverages but also injects fun and excitement into the workplace

environment. With nostalgic appeal, Clearly Canadian creates a memorable experience for employees and enhances their daily routine.”

EMPLOYEES SEEK MORE THAN JUST THIRST QUENCHERS

As the wellness trend continues, it is driving growth and innovation in functional beverages, which are flowing into the workplace as employers begin stocking breakrooms, vending and micro markets with hydration products that are more than just thirst quenchers.

Matt Levine, founder of Chlorophyll Water, says: “There is a growing shift toward functional beverages that support wellness, energy and hydration. Consumers are seeking drinks with natural ingredients, added health benefits and fewer artificial additives. Beverages infused with minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and plant-based nutrients are rising in popularity.”

Between consumer demand and a recent prioritization of wellness programs among corporations, workplace pantries are increasingly

stocking functional beverage options to promote better hydration and overall well-being. “Employers recognize that healthier hydration choices can improve productivity, focus and employee satisfaction,” continues Levine. “And employees now prefer beverages that do more than just hydrate. They want added benefits like immune support, detoxification and enhanced energy, so there’s a shift away from sugary sodas and artificially flavored drinks in favor of plant-based, clean-label hydration options.”

As a result, beverage producers are developing functional hydration products that satisfy the thirst for better health in workplace convenience channels.

For example, Chlorophyll Water is a plant-powered mountain spring water that meets Clean Label Project certification. Products that meet the certification have been tested for more than 90 environmental toxins, harmful chemicals and plasticizers. The water is enhanced with chlorophyll — the green pigment found in plants — and fortified with essential

vitamins A, B12, C and D.

“As employees look for health-conscious hydration options at work, Chlorophyll Water offers clean, functional hydration in a graband-go format, and it’s a great fit for corporate wellness programs as many companies promote health and wellness initiatives,” explains Levine.

Smith says Perfect Hydration Alkaline Water, which is also available through Vistar, is enjoying

Zero-sugar and low-calorie options align with the growing demand for healthier beverage choices in office settings.

success in these outlets for the same reasons. “Consumers are not looking for commodity options, but more functional products with health benefits. Studies show that many consumers are willing to pay a premium for high-demand products in settings where convenience is important — such as at the office. As a result, we are seeing a demand for these products in micro markets and vending for workplace-based consumption.”

He continues: “Alkaline water like Perfect Hydration is gaining ground in the bottled water space in these channels as it boasts a pH level of 9.5+ and offers a distinctive mix of electrolyte minerals for optimal taste.”

And, while employees still crave a caffeine hit now and then, they want it to be healthy, functional and flavorful. “Consumers are increasingly

seeking zero-sugar options that offer flavor without the added calories, but there is also a noticeable shift towards beverages that provide a caffeine boost without the sugar and calories of traditional sodas,” says Missy Wyatt, senior vice president of sales with Talking Rain/Sparkling Ice.

As such, in addition to several zero-sugar and naturally flavored Sparkling Ice and Talking Rain sparkling water products, the company offers Sparkling Ice Caffeine, which provides “major flavor with a kick of caffeine” across the workplace channel, says Wyatt. “The zero-calorie sparkling water is infused with 10 mg of caffeine, vitamins and antioxidants, providing a refreshing pickme-up without the calories.”

SUSTAINABLE SIPS

As consumers are increasingly concerned about their own well-being as well as the health of the planet, hydration product packages have been receiving makeovers aimed at promoting sustainability.

“Sustainability trends are significantly influencing office beverage choices, and we’re proud to be part of this shift,” says Clearly Canadian’s Andrews. “Consumers are becoming more conscious of the environmental impact of their purchases, especially in the workplace, which has led to an increased demand for eco-friendly products and packaging. At Clearly Canadian, we support this trend by offering our beverages in premium glass bottles and using BPANI Gen II liners in our 12-ounce cans. These high quality liners contribute to better recyclability and help reduce the environmental footprint of our products.”

Chlorophyll Water’s Levine agrees: “Sustainability is increasingly shaping office beverage choices, with companies prioritizing eco-friendly

packaging, natural ingredients and products that align with their environmental goals.

“Chlorophyll Water provides a responsible option with its BPAfree, 100% recyclable bottle made from 100% recycled plastic, featuring CleanFlake label technology and Clean Label Project certification,” Levine continues. “Expanding on this commitment, we’re introducing our new aluminum cans to further enhance our sustainability efforts. Additionally, through a partnership with rePurpose Global, we ensure that for every bottle sold, the equivalent of one plastic bottle is removed from the ocean — closing the loop on waste reduction. These initiatives reflect the sustainability-driven choices that companies are incorporating into their workplaces today.”

Indeed, as many companies have initiatives to eliminate or reduce

waste and become more eco-friendly in their operations, some are banning single-use plastics or materials that are difficult to recycle, decreasing the pool of available beverages, says Perfect Hydration’s Smith. “However, innovative, planet-friendly brands like Perfect Hydration Alkaline Water are ahead of this curve and already offer 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles or infinitely recyclable aluminum cans and aluminum bottles, resulting in a lighter carbon footprint, so our packaging is never a barrier to purchase.”

As consumers and corporations continue to drink up wellness and sustainability trends, the future of OCS, convenience and micro market beverage options will likely extend beyond simple refreshment to provide better-for-you options that keep humans hydrated and the planet healthier. ■

AI, automation & more: The tech driving the next era of convenience services

The future of convenience services is being redefined by cutting-edge technology, from AI-driven smart stores to next-gen payment solutions. In this exclusive look, top technology providers share the innovations they’re most excited about, the challenges they’re solving for operators, and what’s next on the horizon.

In their book, “The Future Is Faster Than You Think: How Converging Technologies Are Transforming Business, Industries, and Our Lives,” authors Steven Kotler and Peter H. Diamandis suggest that technology is advancing so rapidly due to exponential growth. This means that technology improves not at a steady rate, but at a rate that increases continuously over time. How quickly? They define exponential technology as one that consistently doubles in power while also becoming less expensive. Operators have certainly witnessed the acceleration of technology over the years, with no signs of slowdown in sight. As competition heats up and artificial intelligence enters the picture, authors Kotler and Diamandis

appear to be on target. The technological offerings are only improving, and some of the leading products such as smart markets are becoming more affordable.

In recent interviews, I asked two questions to some of the industry’s technology leaders:

• What products made for operators are you currently most excited about?

• What does your company have on the drawing board or coming down the line that operators should be excited about and might see at the upcoming NAMA Show?

Not surprisingly, the technology leaders were quite excited about their current offerings and very enthusiastic about the NAMA Show and their future offerings.

SMART MARKETS GAIN GROUND

“It’s been really gratifying watching operators embrace PicoCooler Vision and Stockwell. These solutions are going toe-to-toe with traditional vending while also opening new doors — literally — for new client locations,” said Ryan McWhirter, vice president of product strategy at 365 Retail Markets. “Think of PicoCooler Vision and Stockwell as the dynamic duo that’s transforming a corner of the breakroom into a mini retail destination. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t get excited about tech that makes a ‘fridge’ this cool?”

“We’re forging ahead with our vision for the ultimate smart store — giving operators a modular suite of solutions that seamlessly scale to any

location. Whether you’re looking to outfit a cozy office nook or an expansive corporate campus, 365 Retail Markets is busy ensuring you’ll have the right tools to be in command of your growth. From next-gen AI features to new breakthroughs in frictionless retail, our ‘drawing board’ is stacked with innovations that cater to real-world operator needs. Stay tuned because we’re just getting started,” said McWhirter.

SMART COOLERS CAN ADDRESS THEFT CONCERNS

“Over the past few years, operators have faced significant challenges in controlling theft and shrinkage, especially as they expand their businesses with micro markets and smart coolers. That’s why I’m incredibly

excited about the advancements we’ve made with Smart Stores,” said Jeff Dumbrell, chief revenue officer at Cantaloupe Inc. “This technology has been a game-changer, offering a proven, scalable solution that directly addresses these pain points. By integrating weighted-shelf technology that just works, operators can confidently expand their unattended retail offerings without the constant worry of shrinkage. The best part? Smart Stores are designed to fit seamlessly into their existing workflows, meaning drivers can follow familiar servicing processes while leveraging enhanced security and real-time inventory tracking.”

Looking forward, Dumbrell said Cantaloupe will debut its Smart Aisle technology at the NAMA Show.

“That will be the next evolution of Smart Stores for locations that are high traffic and need a combination of AI camera technology along with weighted shelves to track and charge exactly what a consumer takes out of a store.”

COMBINE AMBIENT, FRIDGE AND FREEZER IN ONE SMART COOLER

“We are very excited about our Micromart Smart Store, which does two times the revenue as traditional vending,” said Yang Yu, CEO of Micromart. “At the NAMA show, we will have a full Micromart Smart Store setup with ambient, fridge and freezer, plus our heating tower addon for operators wanting to serve hot food.”

Smart stores provide operators with a way to control theft and shrinkage in unattended retail locations. Smart stores fit into existing operator workflows and servicing processes.

Looking ahead, Yu said his company is developing an AI Copilot for Micromart Smart Stores, “using data from what’s selling and what isn’t, to make recommendations on what to sell, how much to stock each week, pricing and other insights. This innovative software application — coupled with our advanced hardware, including the digital price tags, and HD header displays — will be a new game changer,” he added.

THEFT CONTROL WITH AI CAPABILITIES

“We are particularly thrilled about ARMS and the advanced AI capabilities it brings to the table,” said Mark Kronenberg, president of ProWatch Solutions, about its ARMS (Automated Retail Management System). “ARMS revolutionizes the way operators manage and secure their unattended retail environments. By leveraging our cutting-edge AI technology, the system not only offers unparalleled theft detection but also automates routine monitoring tasks, effectively giving operators

valuable time back in their day. This allows operators to focus on enhancing customer experience and costeffectively growing their businesses rather than being bogged down by security concerns.”

Kronenberg said that at the upcoming NAMA Show, ProWatch Solutions is excited to showcase the latest advancements in ARMS, featuring new AI capabilities.

“Attendees will have the opportunity to experience firsthand how our enhanced AI technologies deliver unprecedented theft detection and operational efficiency for their unattended retail markets,” he said.

TECH-READY SMART COOLERS HELP FUTUREPROOF BUSINESSES

“We are very excited about our lineup of AVS Connect Cooler Markets that provide unattended retail solutions for our customers across a variety of industries,” said Keith Krail, director of marketing at AVS Companies. “Primarily utilizing our tech-ready CoolSmart cooler, we are helping futureproof businesses so that they can utilize and expand upon their equipment for years to come.”

Looking ahead to the NAMA Show, Krail said AVS plans to showcase a lineup of AVS Connect Cooler Markets featuring various technology integrations, including a POS terminal with a smart lock for daisy chain functionality, AI Camera Vision, a Load Cell (weight-based), and more. “We are working with several different partners to provide a full range of

solutions for our customers that they can find all in one place,” he added.

AI-ENABLED VMS TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP OPTIMIZE OPERATIONS

“The vending and micro market industry is evolving fast, and we’re seeing some exciting innovations,” said Evan Jarecki, CEO of Gimme.

“Of course, we can’t talk about exciting tech without mentioning Gimme VMS — our modern, easy-to-use unattended retail management system designed to help operators achieve operational excellence without the headaches of legacy systems.”

Jarecki said Gimme has been working on multiple AI-enabled features in Gimme VMS. “We’re happy to talk about that and demo it for operators who visit the NAMA Show.”

Jarecki also offered a sneak peek at what’s coming down the line from Gimme. “We are live with scheduled report automations with AI-driven insights. We are developing in-app AI support to help with training, answering ‘how-to’ questions and AI-powered task automation.”

“Imagine delegating tedious tasks like smart merchandising adjustments, schedule optimization and commission reporting to AI — that’s exactly what we’re building. The goal is to take the burden off operators so they can focus on growing their businesses while AI handles the busy work,” said Jarecki.

AI-ENABLED WALKOUT DETECTION AND MONITORING

“We have a lot of exciting enhancements to our software, and some new tools for operators, which will be available to check out at NAMA,” said Bridger Keally, sales director at Panoptyc. “We just released a completely new walkout detection system

using AI on the backend, which is a game-changer in the industry. This new technology will identify walkouts with a much higher success rate, so even if thieves think they are being sneaky by avoiding the kiosk, our system will hold them accountable.”

“Our Shopper Sense monitor solution for deterrence in retail and micro markets will also be on display, as well as a new case-tracking portal, which gives operators visibility into whether their clients have opened the incidents we shared and track their resolutions,” said Keally.

into kiosk health and quickly allow operators to tie in ADM reports with Panoptyc locations. This will ensure we are always able to perform reviews and that operators have visibility to any blocks,” he added.

GRAB-AND-GO FRICTIONLESS SELFCHECKOUT FOR SMALL OFFICES

“We’re most excited about our GrabScanGo App Clip, which is a game-changer for small offices and co-working spaces looking to offer self-checkout without the need for

Among the technologies being developed is AI-powered task automation, which allows operators to delegate tedious tasks like smart merchandising adjustments, schedule optimization and commission reporting.

Max Weisbrod, vice president of product at Panoptyc, said they are continuing to fine-tune algorithms and workflows to provide better service. “A recent feature release saw an incredible 40% overall increase in suspicious incidents reported to operators week over week. As we continue to build out the Panoptyc ecosystem, operators can also expect more control and tooling on the front end. For example, a new installer dashboard will give visibility

a kiosk,” said Wilfred Martis, cofounder of GrabScanGo. “With no app download required, users simply scan a QR or App Clip code, scan their items, and pay instantly with Apple Pay, all within 15 seconds. This makes it perfect for co-working spaces with rotating members, offices with frequent visitors who need an easy, one-time checkout option and small micro market operators who want to serve these locations without investing in expensive kiosks.”

According to Martis, the company is planning to launch an Android instant app later this year. “It will bring the same frictionless, app-free checkout experience to Android users. This ensures that anyone in an office or co-working space — whether on iPhone or Android — can easily check out in seconds,” he said.

PORTABLE AND DIVERSIFIED PAYMENT TECHNOLOGIES

“In today’s economy, we know that diversification is the name of the game. Vending operators, in particular, are taking on additional revenue streams such as micro markets and breakrooms. To support our customers in their business journeys, we’re providing Nova Modu, our handheld POS, which lets you print receipts on the spot, opening up a world of business opportunities — like servicing food trucks and events,” said Pete Carmain, executive vice president of sales, North America, at Nayax.

“We’re also excited to offer our Nova Smart Cooler, with its AI-powered system which is perfect for offering fresh goods — whose instant product identification, precision weighing and payment-activated access provide the infrastructure for secure, efficient and profitable business.”

Carmain said that products that support new operator revenue streams — in addition to the triedand-true VPOS Touch for vending machines — go hand in hand with the end-to-end tool stack that Nayax equips its customers with, including management software, integrated payments and loyalty solutions. “We’re thrilled to be showcasing Nayax’s complete ecosystem for operators at the NAMA show,” he added.

OPTIMIZE FRESH AND FROZEN FOOD MERCHANDISING OPPORTUNITIES WITH COOLERS AND FREEZERS

“We’re thrilled to introduce our brand-new line of open-air coolers, designed specifically to keep perishable foods fresher for longer while maximizing product visibility,” said Randy Skyba, vice president of sales and marketing at Due North. “These sleek, high performance coolers are a game-changer for grab-and-go merchandising.”

“We’re also rolling out our innovative and the highly anticipated Minus Forty freezer, set to launch in Q2,” Skyba added. “These units are designed with cutting-edge energy efficiency and modern aesthetics to help operators boost sales while keeping products perfectly chilled. It’s an exciting time at Due North, and we can’t wait to share these advancements with our customers.”

Skyba said that at the NAMA Show, Due North will be bringing innovation to the convention floor. “Attendees will get a firsthand look at our brand-new open-air coolers, designed to keep fresh food at optimal temperatures while enhancing impulse sales. Plus, we’re showcasing our state-of-the-art three-door

QBD coolers, which offer premium visibility, customizable branding options, and industry-leading efficiency. They are also scheduled for Q2 release.”

He also promised some big news for operators. “Let’s just say we have something big in the works,” he said. “While we can’t spill the details yet, we’re developing something that will take refrigeration performance, efficiency, and user experience to the next level. It’s a game-changer — but for now, we’re keeping it under wraps. Stay tuned, because when we do reveal it, it’s going to set a new standard in the industry.”

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NAMA SHOW

As technology continues to grow exponentially, based on everything we have seen as an industry in the past decade, there is little doubt that the 2025 NAMA Show will be a showcase of eye-popping new technology offerings. This new technology will continue to attract industry newcomers and offer ongoing costefficient and revenue-enhancing solutions, allowing the leading operators an opportunity to focus on growing their business. Clearly, 2025 is a good time to be in the convenience services industry. ■

How Fresh & Easy Markets has grown to more than $4 million in annual revenue in less than three years.

Despite having no micro market experience prior to opening Fresh & Easy Markets, Jason Postl has grown his business substantially in less than three years. He credits that success to a great team, technology partners and a fearless approach to launching the business.

JASON POSTL, OWNER AND CEO OF FRESH & EASY Markets, is a natural entrepreneur. When he started his Glendale, Ariz.-based company in 2022, his goal wasn’t to just create a micro market company — it was to create the best micro market company in the area. Despite having no micro market experience prior to opening Fresh & Easy Markets, Postl has already created a successful company. A strong management team, an eye for innovation and constant improvements have led Fresh & Easy Markets to grow to 100 micro markets, 15 employees and $4.5 million in annual revenue in less than three years.

THE COURAGE TO FAIL AND TRY AGAIN

Although Postl was new to the industry when he opened his first micro market in 2022, he wasn’t new to business.

Prior to moving to Arizona, he had operated a business in California, manufacturing skateboards, surfboards and snowboards. “We had our own brands and did OEM work for others, but ultimately, I didn’t make the right decisions, and I failed.” The business closed in 2008.

Postl remained undeterred. He moved into the healthcare industry, leading a post-acute hospital and starting a medical transportation company. That venture grew to multiple states and $30 million in annual revenue when Postl sold his portion to his business partner.

In 2022, he realized he was ready to return to business. “I knew that I wanted to get into something that was convenience-based,” said Postl. “Everyone’s looking for more convenience, not less.” He looked into different industries to start his next business, but nothing seemed to be the right fit until he discovered micro markets.

Postl’s prior business experience led him to believe that he could succeed in micro markets. “When you’ve [started a business] before, some of the fear is removed because there are more knowns,” he said. “My philosophy is that if someone else is successful at something, then I can be successful at it, too. To me, that just takes a lot of the pressure away starting a new business.”

Fresh & Easy Markets’ focus on customer service is embedded its company values. Such a focus has paid off: all of its 100 markets have been gained from reputation alone.

SUCCESS HINGES ON GREAT EMPLOYEES, PARTNERSHIPS

One thing Postl learned from experience is that having great employees is the key to success in any business. “If you have better employees than your competition, you’re going to win,” he said. Prior to opening his doors, Postl hired five core leaders who were in place on Day One. “I did not take a slow approach,” he said. “We built everything on the platform of a scalable business instead of piecing things together.”

The company’s largest weakness at the very beginning also became its greatest strength: No one within the leadership team had ever worked in micro markets or vending before. “One big disadvantage is that none of our leadership team had worked in this industry before. The big advantage we had was that none of us had worked in the industry before,” said Postl. “We had no preconceived notions of what works and what doesn’t. But I knew if I had great leaders that were pushing me and I was pushing them, we’d have success.”

The team also leaned on industry contacts to learn the ropes. Postl traveled to Houston to shadow Jeff Crowder,

owner of Texas Snack Company. He also relied on advice from vendor partners. “I have asked our vendors, ‘If this was your company, what would you do?’ and then I implement their suggestions,” said Postl. “We skipped a lot of the pitfalls that we would have otherwise had to go through just because we were humble enough to ask for help.”

Postl learned from one industry contact to never sacrifice margins. “We’ve taken that to heart,” said Postl. “That goes against everything we would have done, but the reality is that I’m not my own customer.” If Fresh & Easy Markets has to procure an item at a price that is higher than they want to pay, that margin is passed on to the customers. “We don’t fear that someone’s not going to be willing to pay what we charge,” said Postl. “The reality is that if somebody wants that item and it’s convenient for them, then they’re grateful for the opportunity to buy it. If that allows me to stay in business, then that’s mutually beneficial.”

100 MARKETS AND GROWING

Today, Fresh & Easy Markets is comprised of 80% micro markets, 10% office coffee service and 10% pantry service. The company sold two micro markets in the early days,

but the rest of their micro markets have been gained from reputation alone. Proudly, Postl notes that they’ve never lost a client. “If our customers are happy, we retain them. If our customers are happy, they refer us,” he said. “So, if we continue to focus on the quality, we’re going to continue to grow.”

Fresh & Easy Markets’ service area includes Phoenix, Flagstaff, Tucson and Yuma. Postl has future acquisition plans that will expand the company into traditional vending as well.

Their success in micro market growth lands on the company’s ability to focus on the clients’ needs and match those needs to their budget. “We find out what the client’s vision is and then what their budget is,” said Postl. “We can do anything they want within their budget.”

they design a space and get product options to the clients.

There are several ways in which the company offers products to the client, says Postl. “First, we hand them our product list and they go highlight exactly what they want,” he said. “Only one customer has ever wanted to do that.” Most people give Fresh & Easy Markets the authority to choose which products are featured in their market, and Postl’s team uses its best judgment based on similar location demographics. The company also places a QR code on all units, allowing people to submit requests directly to Fresh & Easy Markets. No matter what, the company makes a point to diligently review planograms and rotate and adjust them every few months.

“We don’t put items in the market that we want,” said Postl. “We place

A different approach to theft

Theft can scare even the most skilled operators away from profitable markets. Rather than letting potential theft deter him from a market, Postl simply plans for it. And in many cases, he asks the customer to pay for the theft.

“In the beginning, I thought I just had to eat the theft we were experiencing in the markets,” he said. “That’s just untrue.”

Postl and his team used to take on all of the responsibility of finding the theft. They would watch dozens of hours of footage across different markets, and then send the footage to clients, who oftentimes did nothing with it. “So, we just wasted a lot of time and money finding theft that goes unresolved,” said Postl.

He decided to take a different approach. He decided to stop assuming his clients wanted things for free. Now, he puts the responsibility of video monitoring on the client. “I’ll ask the clients, ‘Would you like me to put in a camera system for you at my expense for you to be able to monitor your market?’ And now that they have access to their own market footage, they find out that sifting through video is really tedious,” he said. “Many times, they just give up and pay the theft bill.”

Many locations have declined to even have a camera system and just contractually agree to pay for the theft that occurs. “We put no camera system up and every month we just send them a theft bill,” said Postl.

products the customers want.” If the customer doesn’t know about a product, Postl says they won’t put it in a market — a lesson learned from experience. “I purchased several boxes of an item that I liked, and put them in every single market, but nobody had heard of them, and we didn’t sell any. So, the lesson for us was that it doesn’t matter what we like,” said Postl. “It’s not our job to teach the customers what they want. It”s our job to provide the customers what they want.”

Overall, Coca-Cola is the number-one selling cold beverage, with Dr Pepper coming in second. Fritos’ Chili Cheese is the number one selling chip, which surprised Postl’s team. “We didn’t even stock it initially,” he said. “And then one of our customers asked for it, and now it’s our top seller.”

BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION

When he looks toward the future, Postl’s biggest challenge is a good one — keeping up with the growth. The company has already outgrown its current warehouse space and will be moving into a larger one. “Everything else I don’t really look at as a challenge because it’s just part of the system,” said Postl. “The hard part is already done. We have already built out systems, a team, policies and procedures, so now we’re just continuing to find new ways to innovate.”

The company has already moved from offering 16.9-oz sodas to 20-oz sodas, and now they will be switching to the XVL chips rather than the LSS. Going forward, Fresh & Easy Markets plans to expand its fresh food program once it’s able to install a walk-in refrigerator in the new warehouse. Currently, the company uses 12 refrigerators lined up next to each other to store its fresh food. A walkin refrigerator will enable them to expand their offerings.

Postl believes his recent entry into the micro market field has been a competitive advantage for his company, and the numbers don’t lie. In less than three years, he has grown the company to $4.5 million in revenue. “I don’t want to just settle or to just make ends meet,” he said.

The company plans to move to a new warehouse that will allow it to increase its walk-in refrigeration space and, ultimately, stock more fresh food.

“I’ve come into this industry having been in different businesses with some very ambitious partners that have pushed me and helped me see things in different ways.” Postl has big plans to continue to grow Fresh & Easy Markets’ footprint.

The main factor in Fresh & Easy Markets’ ongoing success, Postl believes, is its innovation. “Every day we have

an obligation to try to get better,” he said. “I encourage my team to ask, ‘Are we doing something because that’s how we’ve always done it, or are we doing it because it’s the best way?’ If we are doing something because that’s the way we’ve always done it, then I believe there’s an opportunity to make improvements that benefit the customer, the vendors, the employees and the bottom line.” ■

Fresh & Easy Markets tailors each of its micro markets to the customer’s needs.
