BE BEAR AWARE!
LIVING IN BEAR COUNTRY
Article courtesy of www.fwp.mt.gov.
WELCOME TO BEAR COUNTRY!
Now that your are here, it is extremely important you know how to coexist with bears.
Bears generally prefer to avoid humans, and many potential encounters go unnoticed by the person involved. Other times an encounter can be threatening to all involved, for example, when a female bear feels called on to protect a cub, or when food-conditioned bears grow bold.
To ensure an encounter with a bear is only an encounter — not a conflict — it helps to learn more about the behavior of these wild animals and to take steps to prepare yourself to see one. Bear behavior may seem unpredictable, but it is possible to get a sense of whether they are curious, threatened, or preparing to attack by observing the situation and taking the season, food sources and other factors into account.

Being able to recognize animal behavior helps too. For example, bears will eye a human intently and may demonstrate a natural curiosity until they identify what it is they are seeing. Once the bear realizes it is looking at a person, they most frequently will move off, unless the person’s behavior is threatening to them or their young. However, bears have very unique behavioral characteristics, and it is useful to learn as much as possible about these commonly occurring creatures.
Encountering a Bear
With a little knowledge, you can keep a bear encounter from becoming a conflict. Take time to rehearse various scenarios in your mind in advance. Sports trainers say, “If the mind has never been there before, the body does not know how to respond.”
The following is a list of recommended responses to minimize the likelihood of attack or chances of human injury:
Make certain you have bear pepper spray at the ready and know how to use it.
Always maintain a safe distance from bears.
Stay calm.
Immediately pick up small children and stay in a group.
Behave in a non-threatening manner.
Speak softly.
Do NOT make eye contact.
Throw a backpack or other object (like a hat or gloves) on the ground as you move away to distract the animal’s attention.
Slowly back away, if possible. Keep a distance of at least 100 yards.
Do not run from a bear. Running may trigger a natural predator-prey attack response, and a grizzly can easily outrun the world’s fastest human.
Don’t climb a tree unless you are sure you can get at least 10 feet from the ground before the bear reaches you. Many experts recommend against climbing trees in most situations.
Do not attempt to frighten away or haze a grizzly bear that is near or feeding on a carcass.
If a grizzly bear charges, your first option is to remain standing and direct your pepper spray at the charging bear. The bear may “bluff charge” or run past you. As a last resort, either curl up in a ball or lie face down (flat). Leave your pack on to provide protection; cover your neck and head with your arms and hands. Do not attempt to look at the bear until you are sure it’s gone.
If a black or grizzly bear attacks, and if you have a firearm and know how to use it safely and effectively, Montana law allows you to kill a bear to defend yourself, another person or a domestic dog. If you do kill a bear in self defense, you must report it to FWP within 72 hours.
If you are armed, using a weapon on a grizzly bear does not guarantee your safety. Wounding a grizzly bear will put you and others in danger.
If a grizzly bear attacks during the day, most experts recommend either curling up in a ball or laying face down (flat). Use your hands and arms to protect the back of your neck and face, and keep your backpack on for added protection. Do not move or make noise until you are sure the bear has left the area.
If a black or grizzly bear attacks at night while you’re in a tent, fight back aggressively with whatever you have available to use as a defensive weapon or deterrent. The bear may be seeking food rather than trying to neutralize a threat, so fight back to show the bear you are dangerous.
Report all encounters to your local authorities. Your report can prevent someone else from being hurt.

NEED TO DO!
SO YOU JUST CLOSED ON YOUR NEW HOME ... NOW WHAT?
1

Tell Everyone Your New Address.
Of course, people want to tell all of their friends and family when they just bought a home, especially first-time homebuyers. But make sure you also contact all of your creditors and all other companies you receive mail from to update your address. You should also submit a change of address form to the post office so that all your mail will get forwarded to your new address.
2
Get a Professional Deep Clean. While many homes may look pretty clean, you can’t really be sure just by looking. It’s a good idea to call a professional cleaning service to do a deep cleaning before you start moving your stuff in. It’s much easier and cheaper for cleaning to be done. Call Xtreme Carpet Cleaning 406-580-4558
YOU MADE IT!! GO AHEAD, TAKE A DEEP BREATH OF THAT MOUNTAIN AIR.... NOW THAT YOU'VE MOVED IN, HERE ARE A LIST OF THINGS TO CONSIDER.
3 4
Change the Locks, and Reprogram Your Garage Doors.
Unless you’re buying a brand-new home from a builder, you need to have the locks changed. You don’t know who all has a key to your home, and that can be scary. Get your garage doors reprogrammed so they only work with the remotes you have. It’s possible someone out there got their hands on an extra garage remote at some point.
Set Up Utilities, Cable and Internet.
If you haven’t already, set up your cable and internet to transfer to your new home. Another option to consider is “cutting the cord”… No, this doesn’t mean living without WiFi or TV! There are many options now days, Hulu, SlingTV, Apple TV, Netflix. You will also need to contact the local water, electric and gas companies to have services turned on or transferred to your name.
Set Up Your Home Security System. Most homes these days come with a security system installed. However, it will not be active when you move in. You’ll need to contact a home security company to come out and get you set up.
Meet Your Neighbors.
9 8 7 6 5
It’s always good to get out and meet your neighbors. See who has kids your age, get inside information on the “hood” and make some friends. Your neighbors can also recommend great local services. They have lots of information on your new community and can also be a friendly extra set of eyes to on your house when you are away! Bonus!
Window Treatments.
More than likely your home did not come equipped with window treatments. For your privacy and to keep your neighbors from seeing something they shouldn’t, we suggest contacting an interior designer or blinds company to help you cover your windows in style. Call Budget Blinds of Bozeman 406-585-7299
Understand How the Montana Climate Can Impact Your Yard. If you are new to Montana, it’s important to understand how our altitude and overall climate affect many things. From sprinkler blowouts in the fall, to which plants thrive (or don’t survive), there are some great resources to learn more about how to use the Montana sun and soil to your advantage. ADVENTURES
Montana is known as the haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
There are no limits to the outdoor activities and adventures you can experience in Montana. From fishing, biking, hiking and skiing, to rock and ice climbing, you name it, Montana is the great outdoors!

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
Not only is cross-country skiing an amazing way to enjoy a nice work out, but it warms you up during these chilly winters. The XC community is large and welcoming here in Bozeman, so whether you’re brand new to the sport or have years of experience, you’ll have countless opportunities. Hyalite Canyon, Crosscut Mountain Sports Center, as well as right here in town offer countless trails that are both groomed and untouched. The Bridger Ski Foundation has many resources on their website, www.bridgerskifoundation.org/trails/main, and can help you find grooming reports, trail maps, and trail passes. For gear, tune-ups, and any questions, Bangtail Sports on Main Street has the crew to help!

BEEHIVE BASIN

HISTORY ROCK

The short approach and open terrain call out to many locals when winter arrives. This Hyalite Canyon classic climbs through the pines, past a locally signed boulder, and into open space to a skier’s line of choice.

Being backcountry safe is not only necessary but could help you save the lives of others! Make sure to always check snow conditions before slapping on the skins, and take courses to be aware of avalanche safety. CLIMBING
HYALITE CANYON
Hyalite is known for its many climbing routes throughout the seasons. Spanning from 5.6 Trad to WI5 M9 routes, the possibilities are endless. Genesis area is a well-known zone for both beginner and advanced ice climbers, and is one of many spots that the Bozeman Ice Fest uses to demo gear and lead clinics.
GALLATIN CANYON
East Side, West Side, and Stormcastle make up the three climbing regions within the canyon that consist of over 300 possible routes. Trad and sport routes make up all three areas and span from 5.5 trad to 5.14a sport routes. If you’re not multi pitching towers overlooking the Gallatin River, you’ll be pulling on narrow cracks, chimney features, and clean faces of rock.
BEAR CANYON
This canyon is a sport climber’s dream, as it is all bolted and varies from 5.7 to 5.12c. It is a great area for beginners and has a short approach.

ICE-OLATED GET

ICE CLIMBING
With over 2,000 routes near Bozeman, climbing is a hobby of many in town and the lifestyle of some local pros. If you are just beginning and would like to learn the ropes, Spire Climbing Gym is the perfect place to get belay and lead certified so that you can be safe once you are outside and on the wall.
Bozeman is home to some of the best ice climbing in North America. People travel from all over the world to get a few pulls on ice in Hyalite Canyon, but there is plenty of opportunity if this is a new hobby you’d like to pick up. Every year the The Bozeman Ice Festival hosts clinics in the canyon, temporary practice walls at the fairgrounds, and events at the Emerson Cultural Center. In 2019 Uphill Pursuits, a backcountry-based gear shop, helped set up and support the festival. They are a fantastic source to get all your gear and get ready for some icy adventures this winter!

HOOKED GET FISHING
CAMERON BRIDGE ON THE GALLATIN RIVER
A popular spot with miles of opportunity. This close-to-town zone is great for an afternoon trip to get some good-sized wild trout!
HYALITE RESERVOIR
In the midst of many hiking, biking, and climbing routes, Hyalite Reservoir is surrounded by the massive beauty of the peaks. If you want some fish that will challenge your reel, this is the spot to go!
THE
MADISON RIVER
With many spots being some of the locals’ favorites, the Madison carries many beautiful and sizable trout. Within Yellowstone National Park, the trout that swim through during the spring are known to be some of the biggest, but as summer arrives, the water gets too warm due to geothermal activity. The Lower Madison, near Ennis, Montana, is a beautiful spot surrounded by the Madison Mountain Range.
Whether you’re looking to catch Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Grayling, or Brown Trout, the opportunities are endless. Fly fishing is a pastime of many locals here in Bozeman, so the fly shops, avid fishermen, and guides can all give you a hand on when and where to go. Montana Troutfitters, Fins and Feathers, and Bozeman Angler are all great shops in town to grab gear and get on the river!

TUBING AND RAFTING
Whether you want to plan a guided family trip or have done it for years, the tubing and rafting scene is vast and welcoming! Guided trips leave from Bozeman, Ennis, Gardiner, and Big Sky through the many locally owned companies. Dropping in a tube and floating down the many surrounding rivers is a great way to stay on budget while getting some beautiful Montana scenery in, so here are some great spots that allow for a slow flow.
MADISON RIVER
This scenic route is a calm and popular spot that is known by many! The most common spot to put in is at Warm Springs, and after the two-hour float, most get out at Black’s Fork. Although this float is very calm, be prepared for hidden rocks and shallow spots!
THE MISSOURI RIVER

This float can stretch from full-day trips to a fourday, three-night camping trip along the river. Coal Bank’s Landing is a popular starting point, and camping, or ending points can be reached at Eagle Creek, The Wall, Slaughter River, and Judith Landing.
THE GALLATIN RIVER
This river stretches through the canyon and has many opportunities for all skill levels. Most guided trips begin near Big Sky and allow for challenging terrain, however the upper Gallatin can be much more laid-back for those looking for a mellow ride.
THE GARDINER RIVER MEETS THE YELLOWSTONE
A popular spot for guided trips that creates a day full of Yellowstone beauty and plenty of wildlife. Guided tours are available through Montana White Water, so check out their website to start planning your next Montana summer adventure: www.montanawhitewater.com/ whitewater-rafting/gallatin-river-whitewater-rafting/.

Point to point
From the local M Trailhead to Fairy Lake, the Bridger Ridge Traverse takes hikers along rocky spines and steep climbs.

“Bozeman is like the wicked witch of the west – we melt in the rain. My secret to finding empty trail accessible close to town is to go on runs or hike right after or right before a sprinkle. Please be aware of trail etiquette, and work to not destroy the trails, so if it has rain heavily please, do not use the trails so they have time to cure.”
– Vasu S.

COLLEGE “M” TRAILHEAD

FOREST YOU BE WITH MAY THE
Out and back Steep climbs, summit scrambles, and snow bridges may turn many away, but this route crosses many alpine lakes and may allow you to befriend the local mountain goats ... from a distance of course. The snow remains late into the summer, and many hikers bring ropes to rappel off the summit, so do your research, and know the terrain before getting out on this route.

“Explore Hyalite! While many people see the stunning first layer of mountains in Hyalite, there is so much to explore beyond that. It takes a bit of effort, but a ski/splitboard tour into Palace Butte, Maid of the Mist, or Divide Basin is incredible. Make sure to take the proper gear, and check the GNFAC for avalanche

THE BEATEN PATH TRIAL

This trail is towered over by massive granite cliff faces and crosses paths with many lakes. Most hikers plan a key swap to avoid a lengthy shuttle, but a drive over the Beartooth Highway is not something you’ll regret.

THE BRIDGERS
BRIDGER FOOTHILLS TRAIL
19.9 miles

With tremendous elevation gain and loss, this trail is not for the faint of heart. In the shadows of the Bridger Ridge Traverse, this trail is underrated as its views of the Tobacco Root Range and Gallatin Range are immaculate.
GALLATIN RANGE
GALLATIN CREST TRAIL
23.7 miles

GOOD FOOD DOES GOOD
Have you ever had a particularly disappointing meal? Or been so hungry that it affected your mood? Now, has it happened because you couldn’t afford the meal you wanted? Fork and Spoon operates with a pay-what-youcan model to ensure that no member of the commu nity faces this problem. Every day, approximately 85 people visit Fork and Spoon to dissuade their hunger with scratch-made, locally sourced and inspired meals. There’s a new menu every week. After one customer’s son passed away, he started coming nearly every day because “the staff knows me by name, it’s my social interaction, the food keeps getting bet ter, and the price is right.” A pay-what-you-can model ensures that the price is right for every customer.

Volunteers of all backgrounds serve dishes ranging from elk lasagna to Moroccan chicken and apricot tagine. Diana, a loved and recognized customer, postponed her doctorate to become a therapeutic foster parent, and eventually adopting seven siblings. For her, Fork and Spoon is the “saving grace” for family dinner time, treating the kids to their choice of meal options. Each one of our customers has a story. Through high-quality and consistently available food, Fork and Spoon gives the space for every person to move with dignity through their story.
Dignity drives the concept. Every aspect, from sourcing to décor to the people, revolves around respect for the community and what it has to offer. By partnering with the food bank to utilize reclaimed and donated food, Fork and Spoon can exclusively buy local proteins and support farmers in purchasing excess or unsold produce.
However, it is difficult to run any restaurant, especially on a donation basis. Seventy-five percent of customers are unable to pay for their meals. Fork and Spoon relies heavily on the generosity of Gallatin Valley to participate. Have dinner, consider paying not only for your meal, but for someone you’re sharing the dining room with. Use Fork and Spoon for your meeting space, your catering, your weekly volunteer spot. Going out of your normal routine could be the reason why someone can go back to theirs.
