TEXAS TEXAS CULTURE
COMMON SYMBOLS CULTURE
and

The Texas Flag
The Texas flag is the most popular and widespread state flag in the country. Like the United States flag, the colors red, white, and blue symbolize courage, purity, and loyalty. It is more than just a flag but a symbol of where we came from. Displaying the flag in Texas culture signifies our community’s strong sense of heritage and a show of honor for anyone that is from Texas, regardless of background. We all may be different in our own way, but we are all Texan.
Texas Longhorn
By Concetta Raymond
When you imagine Texas, what are some of the things you think about? Do you think of good ol’ smoked Texas BBQ? What about the bright endless stars at night? While Texas is known for some amazing things, our community’s immense pride for the state stands out amongst all the others. We are unique in that we not only have our own culture, but we are loud and proud about it! A large part of sharing this pride is showing and telling others the symbols that make us who we are. Texans wear and show these and many other symbols with pride, but do we know what they mean to us?
The Texas Star
The popular five-pointed star that many are familiar with is more than just a Western Americana décor item, but also a symbol for the Texan spirit. Representing patriotism, freedom, and bravery, the Texas Star signifies Texas’ independence from Mexico in the 1800s and standing alone for freedom. As a prominent component of the Texas Flag, the “Lone Star State” is known for the singular star standing strong and tall. Rooted in everyday culture, the star is seen commonly as a rustic, Texas image.
As the official state large mammal, images of the Texas Longhorn can be found scattered all over the state. The Texas Longhorn is a true icon exemplifying the term “survival of the fittest.” As one of the only American adapted cattle breeds, the Texas Longhorn evolved to withstand the long droughts, food stress, and other harsh aspects of living in the area. As a model of the phrase “Texas Tough,” the Longhorn has become engrained into everyday culture. Many Texans look to the Longhorn as a symbol of strength and independence.
Bluebonnets
A spring in Texas is not complete without seeing bluebonnets on the side of the road. Named the state flower in 1901, the bluebonnet is an iconic symbol for all Texans. For generations, Texans have gone out into the blooming bluebonnet fields to snap photos of new memories created as a family. Texas’ love for the bluebonnet goes beyond just a pretty picture; it has become a part of the culture year-round. Images, songs, poems, and even festivals surrounding the state’s love of the bluebonnet bring community together to share in this symbolic token of family and beauty.

THINGS YOU NEED TO DO! TEN
2
Change Your Address.
A new home is exciting, and we just want to spend all our time getting it ready to go. But it’s equally important to start things off on the right foot by making sure all the companies you do business with have your new address. That includes credit cards, banks, and membership accounts. Don’t forget to drop off the change-of-address form at the post office so mail is sent to your new place.
Start and Transfer Services
Your utility companies will need you to schedule a start date to begin services. Transferring your internet and television service provider will also require an appointment. Get things set up as close as possible to your closing date, but leave yourself a window of time before settling in, as it’s possible not everything will be done as soon as you move in.
3
Have the House Deep Cleaned.
Everyone loves that “new car smell” –why not make sure to have that “new home smell” as well? Have a professional cleaning company come do a deep clean before you move in to make sure nothing was overlooked. Schedule the service before you move in so they can reach all areas of the house without navigating your belongings.
4
Replace Your Locks.
It’s 10:00 pm – do you know who all has a key to your house? Unless you are the first owner of a house, you don’t know how many keys and garage door openers to your new home are floating around in the world. Change the locks, and either reprogram or buy new garage-door remotes.
5
Protect From Pests.
Our area is crawling with all kinds of critters that also love your house and backyard – some of them being more seasonal concerns than others. Rockwall County has its own share of pests you need to keep an eye on, including termites, roaches, and mosquitoes. Have your house and property inspected to make sure you are maintaining or preventing any creatures that also want to call your place home.
Treat Your Windows Right.
A brand-new home probably won’t have window treatments and other homes may have old ones, if they have any at all. With our extreme heat, window screens and window treatments are especially important to help keep cooling costs down. Replace faded or torn screens, and update treatments to keep the heat at bay.

Personalize Your Place.
All those design shows you’ve watched, pins you’ve saved on Pinterest – now it’s time to put them to use! Spend time visualizing what you want things to look like before you move in. Aren’t a fan of the cabinets? Want different paint in the dining room? Eager to try a new decor theme? Now is the time to pull those visions together, as trying to rearrange couches to paint later on is never easy.
Get Your Yard in Shape.
Our climate helps to dictate what our landscaping looks like; if Texas is your new home, yard maintenance is going to look a little different! The heat, heavy rains, and mild winters all present different challenges for how to effectively use your yard space. Talk to a professional nursery or landscaping company to find which plants will do best. If you live in a community with an HOA, make sure any changes you make are in compliance. If your yard is already landscaped, it’s still worth talking to a pro to make sure you’re taking care of it in the right way, including how to use our most precious resource, water.
Meet Your Neighbors.
The world has changed, but knowing your neighbors is still so important. They share your street, your schools, your community concerns. Take the time to meet those in your neighborhood; they will have the recommendations you and your family are looking for (and we at BeLocal often use!).
If you’re new to Texas, you’ve picked a great place! Where the summers are legendary, and the variety of wildlife and things to do are numerous. The state has a plethora of outdoor activities to keep you busy all year, not to mention the numerous options to keep you and your family busy all through the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

HILL FAMILY HILL FAMILY
BRADY, SAVANNAH, HOLDEN, JUANA, MAXI AND HATTIE
Brady and Savannah both grew up in Rockwall and are graduates of Rockwall High School—Brady in 2000 and Savannah in 2004—but their lives didn’t intersect until a summer evening in 2009 at a Concert at the Lake at the Harbor. They kept in touch but didn’t start dating until a year later when they reconnected at another Concert at the Lake. It was meant to be! The couple married in August 2011 and settled into their first home right here in Rockwall.
Following high school graduation, Brady went on to graduate from Texas Tech University. His professional career started with a series of jobs, including Joe Willy’s for many years, but none seemed to satisfy his entrepreneurial spirit until he opened his own insurance agency, Brady Z. Hill Farmers Insurance Agency. Brady’s entrepreneurial endeavors didn’t stop at insurance. Brady and Savannah became investors in commercial properties and businesses, including a number of construction companies and Rockhopper Apparel & Designs, a Rockwall screen printing and embroidery company.
Savannah is a graduate of TCU and taught at Rockwall Heath High School for 3 years before joining SMU where she did math education research. When daughter Maxi was born Savannah debated about being a stay-at-home mom but knew she was meant to do more. She always had an interest in travel, sparked by memories of family trips as a child. A friend suggested she become a travel agent and in 2016 Savannah opened Savvy Travel in Rockwall, a travel agency specializing in vacation planning, destination weddings, cruises, international travel, and more.
As business owners, Brady and Savannah both have an entrepreneurial mindset, knowing they are creating jobs and

improving the quality of life for all of their employees. But their most important endeavor is that of mom and dad to their 4 children: son Holden and daughters Juana, Maxi and Hattie.
Holden is 10 and a 5th grade student at Amy Parks Elementary. He loves all sports and plays basketball and football. The Kansas City Chiefs are his favorite NFL team and Texas Tech—with his dad’s connection and its famous alum Patrick Mahomes—his favorite college team. He plays Fantasy Football giving him a vast knowledge of many NFL players. In addition to athletics, Holden plays chess in the UIL league. Math and science are his favorite subjects in school.
Juana is 9 and was adopted from Colombia in 2022. Savannah and Brady had talked about adoption since they were dating. They began the adoption process after Hattie was born and in January 2022 received notification that a child was available. Juana was 7 at the time and couldn’t speak English. After four zoom calls, the family traveled to Colombia in August to bring Juana home. Today Juana speaks fluent English and is a healthy and happy third grader at Springer Elementary School in their Bilingual class. Juana is described as a girly-girl like her sisters, but she also enjoys
playing tackle football with Holden and his friends. She does cheer at Heath Hawks Cheer Association (HHCA), plays soccer, and enjoys swimming and being with her friends from school. Art is her favorite subject.
Eight year old Maxi is in the 3rd grade at Amy Parks and is described as the family’s “hippie-flower girl” who marches to the beat of her own drum. She has a creative and artistic soul and enjoys performing and singing. Music is her favorite subject and, of course, she loves Taylor Swift! She, along with her sisters, cheer with HHCA.
Hattie, 7, is in the 2nd grade at Amy Parks. She is a natural athlete whose small stature defies her abilities. She may be the youngest and the smallest but she is described as the toughest. She excels at soccer and tumbling, and also plays volleyball, basketball and does cheer with her sisters. Not surprising, her favorite subject is PE although she also enjoys creative writing. Brady and Savannah praise Hattie for her amazing penmanship, a lost art among the young generation.
The family’s fur-baby is a Bernedoodle named Kelce— an homage to the Kansas City player and Taylor Swift’s
boyfriend! Kelce was a Christmas gift to the kids in 2023 and all of them take responsibility for her care.
Brady and Savannah are busy young parents with the kids’ practices, games and activities, but they try to find family time on weekends at their family ranch in East Texas. Electronics are not allowed but there is an abundance of fishing, 4-wheeling, hiking and hunting. The Hills are long-time active members of Lakepointe Church. As business-owners, they are members of the Rockwall Chamber of Commerce, where Brady served as Chairman of the Board. They are actively involved in various local non-profit organizations, including the Children’s Advocacy Center of Rockwall County where Savannah served as Chair of the Bubbles and Bags event for three years.
Brady and Savannah have lived in Rockwall all of their lives. Over the years they have seen Rockwall grow with new businesses, restaurants, entertainment and schools while still maintaining the feel of a small town community. In 2015 they found the perfect home in Heath to grow their family and raise their children. Their family roots are here in Rockwall, their hometown and the community they plan to stay for many years to come.

YSmall hints of our rich history are alive and well throughout Rockwall County! In 1852, Benjamin Boydstun, Terry Utley Wade, and William Clay Stevenson began digging in the rich blackland soil in need of a water well for his farmstead. Those local leaders discovered a unique “rock wall” formation that resembled perfectly stacked rocks that has been documented throughout the county. This led to the town being named Rockwall in 1854, and subsequently the county in 1873. The discovery is located on private property; however, pieces of the structure are displayed at the Rockwall County Historical Foundation museum and in front of the Rockwall County Downtown Historic Courthouse!
By Jennifer Rumbo Drake-Rockwall County Historical Foundation
Discovery of the Rock Wall circa 1852

Unfortunately, the courthouse you see downtown is not the original structure. There was a beautiful courthouse made of native sandstone erected in 1892 for only $25,000! Many couples sought out to get married in such a remarkable place, however, due to deteriorating stones and mortar, it had to be razed in 1938. The current Historic Art Deco Courthouse was designed by Wichita Falls Architects Voelcker and Dixon and dedicated in 1941. At the time, there were several of the same design built throughout Texas with state funds, but it’s still quite unique and special to the downtown landscape.
Passing through town, we currently see “Highway 66” which used to be Bankhead Highway #1. In 1919, the 870-mile stretch went through Texarkana continuing to Mount Pleasant, traveling through Sulphur Springs, on to Greenville and through Royse City, Rockwall, downtown Rowlett, Garland, White Rock Lake, Dallas by the Old Red Courthouse, and making its way to El Paso! Automobile travel was becoming popular and many one-room lodging facilities popped up. Businesses and gas stations flourished as did our very own Bankhead Filling Station. If you look into the Lake Ray Hubbard waters today, you will see remnants of the old Bankhead.
Congressman Ralph M. Hall, Rockwall native and one of our most famous Rockwallians, was elected 17 times to Congress, one of the last veterans of World War II on Capitol Hill, and the oldest person in history to serve and cast a vote in the U.S. House. As a young man, it has been said that he pumped gas for a man and woman whom he later identified as Bonnie and Clyde. He passed in Rockwall in 2019 at the age of 95.
Between 1959 and 1970, the city of Dallas acquired over 27,000 acres of land to create Lake Ray Hubbard and widen the Interstate Highway 30 crossing. The namesake derived from Ray Hubbard who presided over the Dallas Parks and Recreation System for 25 years. It has been 50 years since the landscape between Rockwall and Dallas county changed with this addition. We have sailing, regattas, concerts by the lake, and so much more! The lakeside living lifestyle is just another part of what makes Rockwall so wonderful!

The mission of Meals on Wheels Senior Services is to keep the elderly and disabled living in their homes as long and as safely as possible through providing nutritious meals, daily human contact, and supportive services. The purpose of their organization is to provide daily nutrition and supportive services to older adults facing health and mobility issues to foster independence. In addition, many of their volunteers assist with daily office duties and fundraising events. These in-kind donations of volunteer time and miles are among one of the highest of all the Rockwall organizations. Patriot PAWS Service Dogs enjoys sharing their passion for helping veterans and they want their volunteers to feel welcome and involved in the process of placing service dogs with disabled American veterans.
The organization recognizes the importance of building strong relationships within the community through an engaging and dynamic volunteer program that supports the Patriot PAWS mission. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is 100-percent privately funded, it is essential to their success to utilize a strong volunteer force to accomplish their mission.
To accomplish this, they strive to offer volunteer opportunities in most areas of the organization and are always looking for new and innovative ways to engage with volunteers. Patriot PAWS has a very small paid staff and relies heavily on the generous time donation of volunteers to keep administrative costs low while continuing to accomplish their mission. WOMEN IN NEED (WIN)
Believing that homes should be peaceful, WIN strives to educate families broken apart by violence to live by nonviolent means. By providing shelter to victims of Family Violence, working towards increased knowledge of the problem, and stressing viable solutions, the purpose of WIN is to eliminate family violence locally and to be a part of a widespread movement to create a society that no longer tolerates the abuse of power through violence or any other means.
WIN is fortunate to have an extremely dedicated force of volunteers supporting their programs and fundraising efforts. These gifts of time and talent are essential to keeping their doors open and helping them keep their services free of charge to their clients. In lean times, volunteers become even more critical to making ends meet, and so they reach out and ask for your help.
