Welcome
CITY OF TO THE

Madison, AL!
Madison, AL! Welcome
A WORD FROM OUR MAYOR

Many move here for job opportunities and for the glowing school system, then they quickly realize how much Madison has to offer. Fitness, theater, food and more…Madison is one of the fastest-growing cities in the southeastern United States, with one of the highest percapita incomes and a school system that is recognized for scholastic excellence at the local, state, and national level.
As your mayor and City Council, we continue to make the quality of living in Madison top-notch by investing in economic development, public facilities, and infrastructure. Madison has been listed as a US News & World Report “Top 10 Places to Grow Up,” a CNN Money “Top 100 Best Places to Live,” one of Family Circle’s “10 Best Towns for Family,” and was recognized as Google’s “2013 Digital Capital of Alabama.” Most recently, niche.com ranked Madison number one in their “2019 Best Places to Raise a Family in Alabama.”
You’ll recognize the accolades are well deserved when you visit our Historic Downtown district for local shopping and dining or take a stroll down one of our greenways. Our public library is also a stateof-the-art feature, providing a workman’s space with a 3D printer, large children’s room and garden, as well as a comfortable fireside reading room. Our community remains focused on health, wellness, entertainment and family.
Madison is ever growing and evolving, and we take pride in new attractions developing in our area. Town Madison including Toyota Field, home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas, is a highlight destination located conveniently off I-565 beginning in 2020. The Town Madison district as a whole offers a high-end experience for all of the North Alabama region.
As you plant your roots in the wonderful community, we welcome you to explore the area and utilize www. MadisonAL.gov as a resource. Madison is a dynamic and exceptional city!
MAYOR PAUL FINLEY
KEY FUNCTIONS OF
OUR CITY OUR CITY
Madison is a digitally focused community, and inside City Hall we are working diligently to make sure citizens have access to our local government. Our city website, MadisonAL.gov, is an easy way to stay engaged and knowledgeable of city happenings through a couple of key functions.
As you scroll the main page, you’ll notice a “Let Us Know” option. This is a great portal to ask questions, or alert us with any issues that our departments may be able to rectify. Also on our main page, you can subscribe to our “Notify Me” option. Customize the alerts to your device via text or email to remain current on city news, road and traffic information, emergency reports, city council agendas, and other important communications.
Busy family life, taking kids to sports and activities, can make it difficult to attend council meetings in person. Thankfully, on the second and fourth Monday of each
month at 6:00 pm our Council meetings are livestreamed via YouTube. For WOW users, this content is also broadcast on our public access channel 42. Video content is updated regularly on our website, social media pages and YouTube channel.
Lastly, our community is encouraged to sit down with Mayor Finley directly for one-on-one meetings. Two hours every two weeks are dedicated to our residents for discussion. Contact the mayor’s office at 256-772-5603, or email mayorsoffice@madisonal.gov to schedule a meeting.
Our website is mobile-friendly, so whether you’re on the go or at your desk, visit MadisonAL.gov to stay informed and utilize this public resource.

THINGS YOU Need To Do! 10 TOP

1 2 3 4 5
Tell Everyone Your New Address.
It’s certainly difficult NOT to focus all our energies on our lovely, newly purchased home! But be sure to take some up-front time and contact all your creditors and all other companies you receive mail from to update your address. Also, don’t forget to submit a change of address form to the post office so that all your mail will get forwarded to your new address.
Change the Locks.
One of the first things to do when you buy a house is to change the door locks and garage codes. You really don’t know who has a key to your home, and that can be scary. Get your garage doors reprogrammed so they only work with the remotes you have. It’s possible that someone out there got their hands on an extra garage remote at some point before you took ownership. Ask for instruction manuals and codes for any electronic systems, like home alarms and garage codes, and make it a priority to change the codes to new configurations that only you will know. If everything works properly, there shouldn’t be any cost associated with updating the pass codes for your garage.
Professional Deep Clean.
While many homes may look clean, you can’t really be sure just by looking. It’s a very good idea to get a professional cleaning service to do a deep cleaning before you start moving your stuff in. It’s much easier and cheaper for cleaning to be done while the house is empty of all your furnishings.
Set Up Your Home Security System.
Most homes these days come with a security system installed. However, it will not be active when you move in. You will need to contact a home security company to come out and get you set up.
Connect the Utilities, Cable and Internet. It’s wise to connect all your must-have utilities before you move in. You will need to contact the local water, electric and gas companies to have services turned on or transferred to your name. See our Important Numbers on page 5 for easy access to phone numbers to your utility services.
Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors. To help ensure your family is safe in their new home, ensure that all the home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working condition. This may include installing fresh batteries or replacing entire units. Most home safety experts recommend checking and changing the batteries in your detectors every six months to make sure they are in good working order. Check with your local fire department for help, too; some offer free inspections and testing if you call the non-emergency line to schedule an appointment.
9 8 7 6

Find the Circuit Box, Review Emergency Shut-Offs and Appliance Manuals.
Even if your new home is not brand-new, it’s new to you, so it’s important to understand how things work. Find the emergency shut-offs and the circuit-breaker box. If the box isn’t labeled, add labels to the individual circuits so you know which goes to which room or appliance of your new home. Most appliance companies publish manuals on their websites for easy access if you don’t have the manual.
Make Your House Feel Like HOME.
This is your time to create or recreate the space that personifies you! Whether you’ve moved into an existing home or have gone through the construction process with a builder, now is the time to really consider how you want your space to look and feel. From cabinets, floors, and walls to outdoor living spaces, there are so many ways to craft your ideal living space.
Meet Your Neighbors.
It’s always good to get out and meet your neighbors; see who has kids your age, get information on your neighbors, and make some new friends. Your neighbors are the ones who helped bring this guide to fruition, as it is their recommendations, tips and referrals that make up the bulk of BeLocal Madison! Your neighbors have lots of information on your new community. Take advantage.

CITY SCHOOLS EMPOWERING STUDENTS FOR GLOBAL SUCCESS
One of the attributes that attract the area's new residents to Madison is the local school system. Madison is supported by the Madison City School System., a top-rated public school district located in Madison.
OVERVIEW:
Madison City Schools is in the thriving suburb of Madison just west of Huntsville, AL, serving students from both Madison and Triana. The 2022 State Department of Education report cards gave the District and all schools an A. Madison City Schools was one of only five districts out of 137 school systems statewide to receive all A's.
MCS is the 12th largest school district in Alabama with 2022 enrollment exceeding 12,400 students spread across two 9-12 high schools, two 6-8 middle schools, seven K-5 elementary schools, RISE Academy alternative school on the campus of James Clemens High School, and a Pre-K program on the campus of Rainbow Elementary. A third middle school is scheduled to open in 2023, a PreK Center is in the works, and the Board of Education recently purchased the land to build an eighth elementary school within the next several years. Enrollment has been steadily growing 300-400 students per year.
The 2020 Census ranked Madison as Alabama’s 10th largest city with 56,933 residents. Neighboring Huntsville is now the state’s largest city at 215,006 residents, followed by Birmingham, Montgomery, and Mobile. The City of Madison experienced tremendous growth from the 1980s to early 2000s from families flocking here to work largely in the expanding defense, aerospace, and technology sectors. Residents are drawn to Madison by its high quality of life factors led by a school district that does not settle for anything less than best.
The Madison City Schools system was created in 1998 after separating from the Madison County School System and including neighboring Triana in the school district. The split was driven by high expectations and demands

▸ RANKED #2, #1, #2 , DISTRICT IN AL BY NICHE IN THE PAST 3 YEARS OF 138 AL PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEMS
▸ EARNED AN A ON THE ALABAMA EDUCATION REPORT CARD
▸ 12TH LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE STATE OF ALABAMA

within the community to take education to a higher level. The citizens willingly taxed themselves to build the framework. They reaffirmed that trust with several tax renewals and continuously support the schools through active Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), booster clubs, volunteerism, and strong business and industry partnerships throughout the community.
Public confidence in Madison City Schools was further bolstered with voter approval of a substantial property tax increase for schools in September 2019, which passed by a 70 percent margin in both Madison and Triana, for new schools and quality instruction. Triana is served by Madison City Schools and has equally been a strong partner to MCS.
Madison’s top performing school system, family-friendly charm, and concentration of well-educated professionals have positioned it as one of Alabama’s and the South’s
most desired places to live. The school district continuously ranks at or near the top of many school rankings in academics, athletics, arts, and other school/student performance measures. In just 23 years as a school system, Madison City Schools has emerged as a powerhouse in Alabama. It consistently earned an A as a district and at every school on state-issued report cards and is regularly rated by NICHE as the best or second best district out of 135-plus public school systems statewide. In just 24 years, some 60 percent of the 2022 seniors (592) were offered $61 million in scholarships, with approximately $23.5 million accepted for an average of nearly $40,000.
An impressive 19 percent scored a 30 or higher on their ACT. Individual schools in Madison also rank admirably - all placing in the top 1 or 2 percentile consistently in NICHE and in annual U.S. News and World Report evaluations of hundreds of schools statewide. One of the hallmarks of Madison City Schools is ensuring that all schools perform at a high level so that, no matter where one lives, they will attend a quality school. Continuous high growth requires frequent rezoning as populations shift and new schools are built. Keeping schools socioeconomically balanced is a key focus in rezonings.
