WELCOME TO
BAKERSFIELD BAKERSFIELD
THE HEART OF CALIFORNIA
Written by Publishers Ryan and Natalie Green
We LOVE Bakersfield! This city is a great place to grow, connect, and the possibilities here are endless. We have lived in other places but chose to make Bakersfield our home, especially after we had our oldest son. We are referred to as the many who grew up here, left for college, and the beginning stages of adulting, and came back as part of the boomerang club. We joke that when you live in Bakersfield, you can go anywhere around the world and run into someone from our big, small town, and it’s true!
This city is known for its ability to turn neighbors into family, which is why this is such a connected community. We chose to move back to Bakersfield to be able to raise our family in an environment that values its people. For us, Bakersfield is the Heart of California, and its value is the kindness from making a new friend in the line at Smitten to get your coffee, going on a walk and chatting with a neighbor about their house project, or as large as the community coming together to support a local nonprofit and making a huge impact on our local community. You can even catch a game at CSUB and run into Mayor Goh, and not only will she remember your name, she’ll probably snap a photo of you and introduce you on the ‘gram. We are the ninth largest city in California, but everyone seems to know everyone is part of the secret bond we have here. Now you get to be a part of that secret society too.
Our purpose with this publication is to help you and your family get connected to Bakersfield from the insight from both long term expert residents and new movers alike. Throughout the pages of BeLocal Bakersfield we hope that it helps you to find your people, your places to volunteer, your favorite restaurants, and your favorite activities and serve as a launching pad to explore our city and connect in a way so that you can build your own micro-community right here in Bakersfield.
Welcome home, THE GREEN FAMILY

WELCOME TO BAKERSFIELD
LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES
welcome you
As Bakersfield’s Mayor, it is a pleasure to welcome you to our city!
Bakersfield is known for its friendliness, hospitality, local talent, innovation and feeding the world. We’re proud of our farmers who provide food for our families, the sounds of Bakersfield creating the perfect soundtrack to our lives, and our community spirit making our city’s dinner table the only place you want to be.
You might run into pro-football quarterback and NFL announcer David Carr at the gas station, see Grammy Award-Winning musical artist Gregory Porter out to dinner, or engage with our local weatherman, Kevin Charette, at a community event. Their fame and celebrity will be overshadowed by their kindness, warmth and friendliness. The Bakersfield community is just that – “community.” I challenge you to find another place to live that cares about its people as much as we do here, and now you’re blessed that it’s your community now too.

KAREN GOH Bakersfield Mayor
Welcome to Bakersfield!
We are a proud community known for our warmth, generosity and connectedness! From energy and food production to the Bakersfield Sound, we live in a dynamic place of innovation and creativity.
Whether you are running errands around town, shopping at the grocery store, or grabbing a meal at a local restaurant, you will likely run into a friend, a neighbor or even one of your local elected officials. As one of your local officials who has grown up here in Bakersfield, we all strive to be approachable, accessible, and helpful in any way we can.
This is your community. Get involved, and reach out if any of us can be of assistance.

VINCE FONG Congressman 20th District of California

FAMILY MEET THE

When you’re a kid, you just want to grow up as fast as you can, and when you’re an adult, you just want to stay young for as long as you can. It’s quite the conundrum, really. Bridging that gap from kid to adult for Dawson and Yuhjen started after finishing graduate school and deciding to move cross country from Atlanta, GA, away from Yuhjen’s roots in Florida to Bakersfield, closer to Dawson’s family in California. Like everyone, the first real, big adulting decision they had to make was, where do they want to begin their career? Bakersfield, of course. That was us, in 2001!
IT REALLY IS AMAZING HOW MUCH [BAKERSFIELD] LENDS TO AN AMAZING COMMUNITY THAT IS EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE OF ONE ANOTHER.

Now 21 years later, all those hopes and dreams continue to be lived out on the daily. From the first big adulting decision to the next biggest of buying a house and where, and how much did they want to spend. Sound familiar? And not to mention starting their own small business in Bakersfield, growing from one and a half locations in 2005, to now three locations across Bakersfield. But like most everyone else, the biggest-ofthem-all adulting decisions had to be that of starting a family. Four children later, matriculating through a wonderful public school
system of Panama Buena Vista, the Li’s have, in the 2022-’23 school year, two at Stockdale High School, one at Warren Junior High and the youngest at Ronald Reagan Elementary.
Bakersfield has provided for the Li’s the best situation to best balance family life and business life — so much that the two really are intertwined. Dawson and Yuhjen are the primary doctors in a group optometric practice. After having been practicing for 20+ years in a tight-knit community, they are the eye doctors to their friends, their friends’
friends, their kids’ teachers, the kids’ sports teammates, and it just goes on and on from there.
Once you’ve been in Bakersfield long enough, you will hear the phrase “Bakersfield is a small big city,” implying that it’s still a small community where everyone knows each other. And if not, then it’s guaranteed that you will know somebody who knows somebody, as two degrees of separation. It really is amazing how much this lends to an amazing community that is extremely supportive of one another.
Contributed by Dr. Dawson Li and Dr. Yuhjen Liao, Bakersfield residents
Living in Bakersfield has also made life simple, compared to living in other big cities. Having only a 10- to 15-minute commute to work is an amazing benefit to giving time back to them in their busy lives. It gives Dawson and Yuhjen some reprieve while running multiple children around from school to after-school activities. For the most part, getting from one end of the city to the other is relatively easy and just allows more time in the day and the week to either spend as family, to get work done, or just doing nothing. All of it better than just sitting in a car with a lot of other angry commuters.
Cost of living and choosing to send their children to great public schools also keeps a little extra in their pocketbooks to do things nearby. Close enough and on the regular are day trips to Los Angeles, or weekends away to the beaches, Las Vegas (pre-children), Mammoth Lakes, and visiting family in San Diego and San Francisco. Pretty much most of California is accessible on a weekend. And flying in and out of Bakersfield Meadows Field Airport has been a game changer to getting away.
Although not true natives of Bakersfield, Dawson and Yuhjen have certainly made it their home with their growing family, close friendships and community they’ve made.

ARTS, & MUSEUMS

The rich soil and seemingly endless miles of grape, almond and citrus orchards so common to Kern County don’t seem to lend themselves to a bustling, urban art scene, but don’t let appearances deceive you.
Because the art scene in Bakersfield is as eclectic, surprising, inspirational and progressive as our culture itself, a mixture of blue-collar values, big-city expectations and personal accomplishment that has turned Kern County into a fertile proving ground for young artists.
Want a dose of history with your art?
Check out the Kern County Museum featuring a stunning collection of neon signs, historic structures and even a nod to the Bakersfield Sound.

FUN FACT
Meanwhile, over at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, you can take in scores of work from both local and regional California artists, while at the Buena Vista Museum, you can school yourself on our shared history going back thousands of years.
Take a drive through downtown or the east side and catch the colorful and impressive new murals that are taking over faded and graffitied walls, each one an expression of an idea that comes to life at the hand of an artist.
Whatever your pleasure in art, Bakersfield has something to suit your taste.
You can buy a Family Museum Pass for $55 and get free reciprocal general admission to The Kern County Museum, CALM, Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and Science and the Bakersfield Museum of Art for a year. With a Travel Museum Pass that is only $125 for two adults and up to six children (17 and under) who reside at the same address can use the pass at reciprocal admission to over 1,000 museums nationwide. Both passes are great options to get out and explore with your family. All passes can be purchased at The Kern County Museum, CALM, Buena Vista Museum of Natural History & Science and the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

KERN COUNTY
museum

The 75-year-old Kern County Museum started as a small exhibit area in the 1920s Chamber of Commerce Building on Chester Avenue and is now 16 acres and more than 60 iconic structures. More than 80,000 visitors a year tour the grounds and exhibits that celebrate our region’s history. Special displays on the Bakersfield Sound, the Watson Transportation Exhibit, Black Gold and the Mission Bank Neon Courtyard receive visitors from all over the world. The Lori Brock Discovery Center provides an interactive museum experience for children.
LOCAL TIP

The Museum is also a popular setting for community festivals, concerts, weddings and corporate gatherings. Batey Garden, the Trolley Car Station and two large outdoor green spaces provide celebration space in the heart of the city. Several other venues such as the Fellows Hotel, Standard School and the Pyrenees Bakery allow for smaller group meetings. County schools also bring children to the museum each week for specialized history tours. The popular history lecture series is held in Standard School once a month on Wednesday evenings in the spring and fall.
The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for daily visitors. In addition to being a rental venue, the Museum hosts its own events, such as the bi-annual

BUENA VISTA MUSEUM OF
natural history & science

The Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and Science is located in the heart of Bakersfield known as the Art District. The museum is filled with unique exhibits and many one-of a-kind world-class fossils from our local Sharktooth Hill, dinosaurs bones and replicas, Native American artifacts, sparkling gems and minerals and a hands-on Explore-it Zone!
The museum offers captivating lectures for adults and many fun educational opportunities for all ages! However, the heart and soul of the museum are the children. Most children are fascinated with the natural world, especially prehistoric animals. At the museum, the activities feed the curiosity, sense of wonder and imagination. Children and adults can learn, “How was that made?” “Where did this come from?” “What did it look like?” “What did it eat?”

The museum goes beyond the exhibition of fossils, minerals and artifacts. There are terrific and fun programs and activities to educate children about the earth and life sciences. These include science camps and enrichment days filled with hands-on activities designed to engage children, harness their natural desire to explore, discover new things, and to figure things out. Children at the Buena Vista Museum learn how to observe, experiment, reason, and think critically. At the Buena Vista Museum children are not passively entertained but are involved with tactile learning experiences and taught respect for nature and things living, both in the past and present. The Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and Science is more than just a place that preserves and displays rare and important fossils. It is a place that can change children’s lives. Plan your visit today.

Setting the Table for Bakersfield’s Restaurant Culture
More than 200 years ago, the first settlers from the Basque region of northern Spain and southern France arrived in California, the first wave of explorers that would open the door for a steady influx of Basque immigrants that would change the face of Kern County.
In fact, the Basque culture is so intertwined into the modern culture here that it is near blasphemous to mention
LOCAL TIP

“Having moved to Bakersfield in April 2019 from New York, I didn’t know anything about Basque culture. Having now experienced their food from Woolgrowers, Pyrenees, and Benji’s, what an amazing experience. I now love taking out-of-town guests to one of these restaurants.”
— Daniel B., Bakersfield resident
Kern County without noting the historic significance of the Basque people.
And nowhere is that on more display than the Basque restaurants that have been feeding Bakersfield for over a century: places like Woolgrowers, Narduccis, Pyrenees Cafe, Chalet Basque and Benji’s French Basque Restaurant.
Known for their hearty soups, pickled tongue and ample servings, eating Basque has become a family ritual in Bakersfield, where everyone has a favorite Basque restaurant and a few stories to go along with it.
Basque meals typically start off with a “set up” course of salad, bread and soup, and is followed by heart entrées including lamb, chicken and seafood.
The Noriega Hotel, another famous local Basque eatery, closed during the pandemic and was known for its family-style eating and Picon Punch, the preferred Basque cocktail. Although the old hotel is gone — it was located near the railroad tracks in Old Town Kern — a new version of Noriega’s has opened to appease those who simply can’t go long without their “Basque fix.” And with one of the largest concentrations of Basque descendents in the nation, it looks like Bakersfield’s fondness for its “Basque fix” is not going anywhere.

“Support local! We love supporting our local businesses and restaurants. Our favorite go-to is Nuestro Mexico Restaurant! The food is absolutely delicious; you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Best watermelon margaritas in town! We love that it’s family-owned, and they always treat us like family when we visit. Definitely recommend trying this yummy spot!” Savannah and Darion N., Bakersfield residents

LEARNING & DISCOVERY
Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and Science
The Buena Vista Museum has one of the best and largest collections available of fossils from the Miocene period (14-15 million years ago). BAKERSFIELD DOG PARKS:
What better way to let your pup burn off some energy and get some socialization time in?
There are some amazing dog parks in Bakersfield to explore. Try one by your home or try them all. Please remember that your pup must be up to date on all vaccines, including rabies, and do not unleash your pet until in the off-leash area. It is always a good idea to survey the pets in the park before you enter to see if any of the animals are acting cautious or reactive. Also, please be sure to clean up after your pet. Children may be in these areas but must be supervised at all times.
