A group of Quakers traveling from North Carolina, established the town we now know as Westfield, as part of a bigger plan to try and create a stop for the underground railroad. It is recorded that it never became an official stop due to harsher laws towards aiding and abetting escaped slaves. It officially became a town in 1849, and continued growing until it became a city in 2008. It is now home to one of the largest youth sports attractions in the United States, Grand Park Sports Campus, which is estimated to have 3.5 million people visit a year.

“The towns are all uniquely their own: Zionsville, Westfield, Carmel, Fishers & Noblesville are all separate yet maintain convenient flow & connectivity to one another.” - Kyle I.
Carmel, Indiana was once a small little town named Bethlehem. It started off with 14 lots and in 1837, the first general store was built, and in 1846, they built a post office. Unfortunately, shortly after the post office was constructed, they realized there was another town in Indiana that already had the name of Bethlehem. They took a vote, and decided to switch the name to “Carmel”.
Now in 2024, Carmel has grown tremendously with over 103,000 people calling it home. Carmel is world recognized for being the roundabout capital of the world! With over 150 of them, it has been reported that the number of accidents overall has decreased by 40%. These roundabouts have also made it easier and safer for pedestrians and bicyclists to enjoy everything Carmel has to offer.
Zionsville is named after William Zion, who was a Lebanon businessman. He was a board member of the railroad and saw a significant need in a train stop and new town between Whitestown and the Boone-Marion County Line. Zion was able to convince the Cross family, who owned over 80 acres at this time, to begin building a new town on their acquired land. The Cross family agreed, and eventually named the town after Zion. In 1852, the first house of Zionsville was built, and the construction for the railroad also began that year, and was completed in 1853.

Hi! I'm Brittany Lang, and my daughter Olivia and I are all about adventures!
After finishing college, I moved to Las Vegas and dove headfirst into a lifestyle filled with outdoor fun. From hiking and rock climbing to savoring all sorts of delicious cuisines, I was living the dream. But when I became a mom to Olivia, I knew I wanted to be closer to family and give her a more family-focused upbringing. So, in July 2021, we packed up and moved to Indiana, and it's been an incredible decision that we've loved every minute of since!
My roots lie approximately 30 minutes north of Indianapolis. Over the years, my extended family has gravitated towards areas like Fishers, Carmel, and Zionsville, fostering a sense of closeness that we greatly appreciate.
Our involvement in the community is extensive. Constantly exploring new locales and partaking in various activities, from flower-picking at local farms to navigating muddy terrain at Badlands Off Road Park, keeps us engaged. Both Olivia and I practice ju-jitsu locally, and we actively participate in the Fortville Christian Church community. Additionally, I dedicate time to volunteering for S.O.C.S. (So Others Can Survive), providing essentials directly to homeless camps in downtown Indianapolis.
Olivia, at six years old, exudes a zest for exploration and activity. Currently excelling as a 4-stripe white belt in BJJ, she eagerly anticipates her next belt test. With a penchant for cheeseburgers and a love for climbing, whether at the playground or a climbing gym, she's always on the move.
Personally, I find solace in savoring red wine at establishments like Daniel's Vineyard or Urban Vines, though Peace Water Winery has recently caught my attention. Delighting in boutique shopping, downtown destinations in Noblesville, Fortville, Carmel, and Zionsville hold a special allure. For home decor, Allisonville Home & Garden in Fishers, and the Apple Butter Barn in Pendleton top my list. And for clothing, Beauty + Grace in Carmel, PJs Pink Boutique in Fortville, and Vintage Charm in Zionsville are favorites.
Our leisure activities often involve trampoline parks like Urban Air and Adrenaline, as well as
Our go-to dining spot in Indy is The LOFT at Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville, renowned for its farm-to-table ethos. Attending Sunday school and worship services at Fortville Christian Church, I recently completed the Rooted study and subsequently led another group through it. Despite its small size, the church exudes warmth and inclusivity, fostering a sense of belonging.
Driven by a passion for exploration and a desire to inspire other families, I launched @indy.family.fun on Instagram, where I share our adventures and encourage families to embrace the abundance of experiences Indy has to offer.
While Indiana may lack topographical diversity, it certainly doesn't lack excitement. Whether it's outdoor adventures, artistic pursuits,

WELCOME TO THE HOOSIER STATE, NEW NEIGHBORS! NOW, LET’S CHAT ABOUT SOMETHING THAT MIGHT GIVE YOU A FEW SPINS –ROUNDABOUTS! THESE CIRCULAR TRAFFIC WONDERS ARE BECOMING MORE COMMON IN INDIANA, AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE NOT FEELING LIKE YOU’RE STUCK IN A LOOP.
So, what’s a roundabout, you ask? Well, it’s like a dance floor for cars – a circular intersection where traffic swirls around a central island. Forget the old-school rotaries; these modern marvels are designed to keep things smooth, safe, and stylish.
Picture this: you approach a roundabout. First move – slow down and stay in your lane. Keep your eyes peeled, and when it’s your turn, yield to the vehicles already gracefully circling. Think of it as an automotive ballet. Oh, and don’t forget to follow the one-way signs and show some love to pedestrians and cyclists at crosswalks.
Now, here comes the tricky part – entering. Wait for your moment, let the roundabout traffic take the lead (they have the right-of-way), and then smoothly merge to the right. No abrupt moves, just a seamless dance through the lanes.
Once you’re in, keep the rhythm going. Cruise through the roundabout until you reach your exit point. Avoid any impromptu stops – these circles are all about the flow.
As you prepare to exit, be courteous and signal your intentions. Right turns are easy – just signal and exit to the right. Left turns? Well, you circle around the central island and then gracefully make your right turn to exit. It’s like performing a vehicular pirouette!
And guess what? Roundabouts aren’t just for your everyday sedans. They’re versatile – emergency vehicles, large trucks, they
all know the steps. If you see flashing lights, just move as far right as you can and let them take center stage.
Now, let’s talk about Carmel – the city that’s turning intersections into roundabout masterpieces. With a whopping 142 of them and counting, Carmel is on a traffic circle spree. The former Mayor, James Brainard, was the maestro, conducting a symphony of safer roads and greener living.
Jump into your car and you’ll see the magic. Roundabouts keep traffic flowing, making intersections more efficient than a welltimed magic trick. By 2025, Carmel plans to have just one stoplight, paving the way for narrower roads and happier pedestrians.
But that’s not all. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveals that Carmel’s switch to roundabouts has cut injury crashes by almost half. Busy intersections? An 84% drop! That’s the kind of encore we all want.
And let’s not forget the environment. Carmel’s roundabouts save the equivalent of 5,000 cars’ worth of CO2 emissions, all while putting an extra $14 million back into drivers’ pockets. Now, that’s a green revolution we can get behind!
So, buckle up, newbies! You’re in for a ride through the circular wonders of Indiana’s roundabouts. Enjoy the dance, follow the steps, and soon enough, you’ll be spinning through them like a seasoned pro! LOCAL
