MOMENTS IN TIME
By Caleb Boivin
EARLIEST FOUNDATIONS
Sumner County contains three primary cities that reside within it: Gallatin, Hendersonville, and Goodlettsville. The three cities have worked synchronously with each other since its beginning and have significant importance not only within the state but also the country. The chair seat for the county is Gallatin, its name originating from elected official Albert Gallatin. Albert Gallatin was the Secretary of the Treasury to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and stands as the longest-serving U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in America’s history.
When the town was first being surveyed, the plans for the layout of the town was an open square concept, with Andrew Jackson being the notable purchaser of a plot of land in the square. Jackson’s
contributions went further as he established Gallatin’s first general store in 1803, and the county courthouse and jail were built that same year in the central most part of the square.
Hendersonville’s founding started in another state entirely, as the state of North Carolina gave a land grant to Daniel Smith in 1784 for exploring the now Middle Tennessee area. Smith was a well-known surveyor and decided to use the land as a base of operations for himself, starting construction on Rock Castle that same year. Construction on the estate was not finished until 1796, with the process being supervised by his wife, Sarah Michie, while he was away on surveying trips. The town was named after William Henderson in recognition of his service in the Revolutionary War. In its earliest time as a town, Hendersonville was the center
of trade for Sumner County, specializing in tobacco, hemp, and livestock such as cattle and horses.
Goodlettsville’s history is a little more ambiguous than the others in the county. The area was discovered by Kasper Mansker, a German immigrant who was born on the ship that he arrived in. Mankser traveled with a group of hunters starting in 1769. They had traveled through the majority of what is now Kentucky and Tennessee when they discovered the Sumner County area. On his journey, Mansker settled in the area for a record-setting winter season from 1779-1780; this was when he built his own station known today as Mansker’s Station. In terms of its namesake, Goodlettsville was named after A. G. Goodlett, a pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church from 1848-1853.

FUN FACT
The Bowen Plantation House, located in Goodlettsville, is the oldest brick home in Middle Tennessee.

NOTABLE RESIDENTS
Sumner County is also known for its deep roots within the music industry, as most of its famous residents have had a vast impact in the field. Some of its more well-known residents include Duane Allen, Joe Bansall, William Lee Golden, Richard Sterban of the Oak Ridge Boys, revolutionary songwriter Mae Boren Axton, the legendary Johnny and June Carter Cash, Kelly Clarkson, Mike Elizondo, Roy Orbison, Thomas Rhett, Ricky Skaggs, Taylor Swift, Conway Twitty, and even Ed Sheeran, who purchased a home in the county in 2013.

TRAGEDY IN GALLATIN
In the mid-1800s, the world was dealing with an outbreak of Cholera that devastated everywhere it landed. The outbreak reached the United States in 1873, first recorded in the ports of New Orleans. The pandemic then found its way to Gallatin in the summer of the same year, with the first recorded case in the county occurring on May 29th. In the next month, 68 people had died in the town, with 120 overall deaths in the county. This outbreak caused the town and the county as a whole to regress a bit in terms of success and progress, but it would eventually gain its footing in the late 19th century, becoming a center for agricultural trade for years to come.
Our historic sites host great events throughout the year. I never miss the Run for Rose Mont Kentucky Derby party, County Sumner Irish Festival at Bledsoe Fort, the Nashville Symphony at Rock Castle and the Candlelight Cemetery Tour in Gallatin. - Deanne D.
OLD HICKORY DAM
The Old Hickory Dam is in large part responsible for the development of Hendersonville and how it eventually became the most populous city in Sumner County. Construction started in 1952, and the project was completed in 1957, with its impact almost becoming immediate. The dam provided numerous jobs and recreational interests to the area, so many people progressively moved to the city over the next twenty years. Since then, its importance has continued to be shown, as it was a key element in controlling the flood waters from the devastating flood that hit the area in 2010. The Cheatham Dam was responsible for water control, but since it reached its capacity, it needed to release the water that had been increasing from the storms. There was worry that the Old Hickory Dam would not be able to hold the incoming water, but when the waters started to recede a few days later, the water was about one foot below the top of the dam, narrowly escaping any more issues.

FUN FACT
Gallatin’s first pump fire engine and first working traffic light is housed at Sumner County Museum in Gallatin. The traffic light still works too!

RANDY’S RECORD SHOP
Randy’s Record Shop was, at one point, the world’s largest mail-order record company. Located in Gallatin, TN, it became as successful as it was when founder Randy Wood would advertise his shop to one of the more popular stations in the country, WLAC Nashville. The shop was a pillar in the community despite it starting as an appliance store, with the records he sold being an afterthought. The store began to attract many visitors because of its well-known acclaim and a vast selection of artists, helping to develop it into a full-time record store. Wood would go on to create the Dot Record Label, which became a very successful studio for those in the R&B genre such as Pat Boone, Gal Storm, and Johnny Maddox. Sadly, the shop closed in 1991 and has since been demolished, but its history will live within the community, with many of Gallatin’s residents remembering how important the shop was to the community.
TWITTY CITY
In an era in the early 80s where every star had their own mega compounds, it was inevitable before Middle Tennessee, home of country music, got its own. One of the more famous examples is Twitty City, home of Conway Twitty. Twitty City was a massive facility located in Hendersonville that operated as both a home for Twitty and an entertainment complex for his business. This facility became a major tourist attraction since its completion in 1982 and was featured in several TV shows and other popular media at the time. The facility stayed open until about 1994 and was then auctioned off by Trinity Broadcasting Network, where it remains to this day as a broadcasting center for the television program Huckabee.
BREAKING BARRIERS
On February 28th, 1970, in a time when the country was primed for change, Gallatin had a story of its own that had a significant impact on the community, and it all took place at a basketball game. Bill Ligon and Eddie Sherlin were close friends during a time when it was frowned upon for different races to be friends. Throughout high school, they had kept their friendship a secret, but in the District 20 Tournament Championship game between the All-White Gallatin High and the All-Black Union High, that friendship would impact the lives of many in a positive way. The two played a very close game, but it was Sherlin’s 13 points in the 4th quarter to secure a win for Gallatin at 74-60. However, it was the actions after the game that changed everything. The two met at center court and hugged each other in a demonstration that helped to bring unity to Gallatin.

THINGS TO DO AFTER MOVE-IN TEN

1 2 3 4
FORTIFY YOUR FORTRESS
Swap out those locks to keep out former keyholders and possibly a rogue squirrel with a lock-picking acorn. Don’t forget to add a smart doorbell so you can pretend you’re not home with high-tech flair when your in-laws drop by unannounced.
UTILITY SLEUTHING
Give your home a full utility detective work-over and make sure all systems are elementary, my dear Watson. Consider eco-friendly gadgets that not only save the planet but also save enough pennies to fund your coffee addiction.
GREEN THUMB ORIENTATION
Summon your inner garden guru and decipher the enigma of your backyard – is it begging for a snip here and there or in dire need of a botanical exorcism? If your lawn looks like it’s thrown a rager worthy of teen movie infamy, perhaps it’s time to ground it with some disciplined landscaping.

HOME CARE 101
Treat your abode to regular spa days with maintenance check-ups, because prevention is better (and cheaper) than the cure—especially when the cure involves calling a plumber at midnight.
READY FOR ANYTHING KIT
5 6
Stock up on emergency supplies, because it’s only a matter of time before the toilet overflows or aliens invade—whichever comes first. Make sure your family knows the escape route, or at least where the snacks are stored.
9 8 7
INSULATION NATION
Investigate the fluffiness of your insulation because a well-insulated home is like a big bear hug for your heating bill. Plus, it gives you a great excuse to avoid leaving the house in winter.
DOMESTIC CANVAS PERSONALIZATION
Slap some new paint on the walls to turn ‘meh’ into ‘wow’ with color choices that express your inner soul— or at least don’t scare the cat.

10
EMERGENCY ROLODEX REDUX
Update your list of emergency contacts, because you never know when you’ll need a superhero with a plunger. It’s like having a bat-signal for home disasters.
WATERPROOFING WONDERS
Ensure your home’s as watertight as a duck’s backside to avoid unwanted indoor pools in the basement—unless that’s your quirky way of increasing property value.
PEST-BUSTER PROCLAMATION
Lead a valiant charge against the armada of bugs aiming to squat in your domain rent-free. You didn’t sign up for an insect B&B, and the only guests you’re willing to host without complaint are the ones you’re related to by blood or marriage vows

LOCAL FOODIE FEATURE
BILLY SLOAN

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A FOODIE?
Oh man, my food journey’s been quite the ride. As a kid, I hated anything green and lived on a steady diet of PB&Js and cheeseburgers. Fast forward to now, and it’s a whole different story. I’ve broadened my palate and really enjoy a wide range of foods. My seven-year-old self would be appalled.
WHAT IS BILLY BITES BACK (@BILLYBITESBACK)?
I’m a local guy—grew up down the road in Madison. My wife and I set roots in Hendersonville over two decades ago when we started our family. We’ve watched this place transform, especially in the last ten years. Along with the growth, we’ve seen a pretty awesome food scene emerge. We’re foodies at heart, but 2020 had other plans for everyone, right? We couldn’t hit up our favorite local spots because of the lockdown, so I turned to my own kitchen.

I’ve always liked cooking, but that year it became more than just a way to fill the time. I started sharing my culinary adventures on Instagram, just for kicks. Didn’t expect it to be a big deal, but here we are—my little hobby’s turned into something more, and there’s a growing community of fellow food-lovers following along.
WHAT IS A TYPE OF FOOD YOU DON’T LIKE AND WHY?
Beets. They’re vile and disgusting and I can’t stand them. Could there be some childhood trauma to blame? Possibly. But trust me, no amount of therapy or culinary wizardry could ever make beets taste good to me. They’re a hard pass in my book.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?
Ah, the “favorites” question. I’m not a fan of picking favorites—it’s like choosing your favorite kid, ya know? But if you really press me, I guess I’d say pizza. I mean, who gets tired of pizza? I could eat it every day and still crave it.
That being said, I’ve been on a bit of a Japanese food kick for the last several months. So much so that I recently collaborated with a local pizza place to create a Japanese-inspired pie; the Miso Chili Crisp. It was a killer combo of two things I love, and it was a blast to experiment. So yeah, pizza and Japanese cuisine are definitely high on my list right now.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF SUPPORTING LOCAL RESTAURANTS?
Supporting locally-owned restaurants is a win-win. You get unique, often high-quality food, and your money stays in the community. Local joints often source from nearby farms, too, so you’re helping multiple local businesses. Plus, it fosters a sense of community and makes our town a better, more diverse place to live. So next time you eat out, BeLocal!
TELL US SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOURSELF WE WOULDN’T OTHERWISE KNOW.
I’m in the midst of developing a podcast that dives deep into the local restaurant scene, spotlighting foodies and social media influencers who are shaping culinary trends in the area. While I can’t spill all the beans just yet, let’s just say I have high hopes for it making waves. Keep an ear out; this could be a game-changer for how we talk about food and community.
