STUART WELCOME TO

& THE TREASURE COAST

By Todd Braun, Publisher

Welcome to Stuart and the Treasure Coast, where you are truly surrounded by hidden gems. As a popular tourist destination, the population swells during the winter months but continues to remain a relatively quiet, laid-back place to live and play year-round. A welcoming family-friendly community, you will always feel like you have come home.

Beaches aside, the Treasure Coast is home to world-class golf, Major League Baseball spring training and nationally awarded higher education. We are a culturally rich community, diverse with theater and art that rival big cities. The Treasure Coast is a highly regarded fishing haven, with Stuart sitting right in the middle of what is called Sailfish Alley. It is appropriately named the Sailfish Capitol of the world.

History is threaded throughout the Treasure Coast. Here you have the opportunity to hike along interpretive trails, explore how the Navy SEALS first began in Fort Pierce, see firsthand the work of the Highwaymen, step back in time at the House of Refuge, and experience old Florida at the Seminole Inn. There are so many more historical landmarks peppered throughout Martin and St. Lucie County. It’s worth the time to discover why this slice of heaven is so special.

Always looking for a way to celebrate and share our passions, along with supporting our nonprofits, the Treasure Coast could also be named the festival capitol of the world. In other words, we like to have a good time while supporting great causes. Great food, great music and the peaceful, easy going energy that is reminiscent of days gone by.

THIS IS THE TREASURE COAST.

a short History of Stuart

The Atlantic Ocean, the Indian River, the St. Lucie River with its North and South Forks, as well as countless creeks, played starring roles in the history of Martin County. The native inhabitants depended on the bounty of the water as did the pioneers who settled here in the late 1800s.

The Gulf Stream creates a shipping lane a few miles off the coast. In 1876, before the region was settled, the U.S. Government built Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge on Hutchinson Island. A keeper and his family offered assistance to victims of shipwrecks.

In the 1880s, Homer Hine Stuart, Jr. purchased property on the north side of the St. Lucie River and built a bungalow. When Flagler’s railway was constructed, Stuart donated land for a depot and in return his surname was given to the railway stop.

With the arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway, pioneer life changed dramatically. Reliable transportation made it much easier to ship fish and pineapples, the region’s major products. The tourist industry blossomed, and social life revolved around the arrival of trains that now brought the mail.

The settlement on the south side of the St. Lucie River, originally named Potsdam, became Stuart after Walter Kitching convinced Flagler officials to move the depot to a site in front of his store. The name came across the river with the depot.

LOCAL TIP

“There’s no place like downtown Stuart and the surrounding Treasure Coast. You don’t get that Southern-town feel and hospitality anywhere else in Southern Florida. We’re raising our three kids here, and couldn’t be happier with the community and the outdoor adventures.

The kids’ favorite things are the Cowabunga Surf Camp in the summer and the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast along with the park outside of the museum. This community cares about the next generation, and you can feel it!” – Ben B.

The depot, railway spurs, boat docks and a ferry landing formed the hub of pioneer Stuart. Today, Stuart’s Flagler Park is the location of the community’s former commercial center. The only vestige remaining, other than old dock pilings, is the former George W. Parks General Merchandise Store, today’s Stuart Heritage Museum.

Our first tourists were outdoorsmen who came to hunt and fish. Maine hunting guide John Danforth brought a houseboat down to serve as the first hotel, then later built the Danforth Hotel.

Former President Grover Cleveland discovered the region’s good fishing and stayed at the Danforth Hotel. The news of Stuart’s fabulous fishing spread, and other hotels, boarding houses and apartment houses were built to accommodate tourists. Boat building and commercial fishing changed to meet the needs of tourists and sports-fishermen.

The Stuart Commercial Club, the forerunner of today’s Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce, was created in 1911 to promote the region and facilitate road and waterway improvements. An auto bridge across the St. Lucie River was high on its wish list. Stuart was incorporated in 1914, four years before the bridge across the St. Lucie River was finally open for traffic.

The completion of the Dixie Highway that could now cross the St. Lucie River at Stuart helped create the Great Florida Land Boom of the 1920s. The St. Lucie River Region was caught up in the development frenzy. The Commercial Club campaigned for the creation of a new county and key members went to Tallahassee to plead the cause. Things fell into place after the decision was made to name the new county after the incumbent governor, John W. Martin. On August 5, 1925, Martin County was official. The Boom was beginning to waver so the grand plans for a new courthouse were scrapped and the new county government moved into an empty schoolhouse.

Hurricanes contributed to the boom’s collapse, but the new county it spawned endured. The former Commercial Club evolved into the Martin County Chamber of Commerce and was officially incorporated in 1928. There were many challenges. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the federal government aided in construction of the Roosevelt Bridge, the Woman’s Club and Library, the log cabin used by the entire community and, in 1937, with the Art Deco addition to the courthouse. Failed banks were replaced with the Citizens Bank of Stuart that evolved in to the Seacoast National Bank we know today.

During World War II, Witham Field was constructed at Stuart for training Navy pilots, and Camp Murphy, a sprawling 35-square-mile U. S. Army Signal School, was built in Hobe Sound. Coast Guard facilities expanded on Hutchinson Island and lookout towers dotted the landscape. Some of the servicemen married local girls, and many returned to the area after the war. Jonathan Dickinson State Park was created from the vast acreage that was formerly Camp Murphy.

The Chamber of Commerce worked to provide economic security and attract tourists and industry. In 1941 a phenomenal sailfish run brought attention to the waste of killing and discarding catches and the release system was established. Stuart promoted itself as the Sailfish Capital of the World — the species needed to be preserved. Stuart Fishing Guides, first published by the Stuart Daily News in 1935 and distributed by the Chamber of Commerce, attracted thousands to the region. Ernest F. Lyons, longtime editor of the Stuart News, was responsible for most of the text, and the fishing guides were chock full of ads from local businesses. Lyons, an avid sportsman and environmentalist, helped inspire local residents not only to enjoy our good nature but to preserve it.

Editor’s Note: Sandra Thurlow is the author of several regional history books and many articles. The photographs and stories she and her husband have collected through the years will be merged with the archives of the Historical Society of Martin County at the Elliott Museum.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A

HURRICANE IN THE TREASURE

COAST

LIVING IN THE TREASURE COAST OFFERS BEAUTIFUL BEACHES AND A RELAXED LIFESTYLE, BUT IT ALSO MEANS PREPARING FOR HURRICANE SEASON, WHICH RUNS FROM JUNE TO NOVEMBER. HERE’S HELPFUL TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME, AND FAMILY WHEN A STORM APPROACHES.

1

CREATE A HURRICANE PLAN

Establish an evacuation route and ensure everyone knows where to go if necessary. Make arrangements for pets, as not all shelters accept animals. Consider the needs of elderly or special-needs family members.

2

ASSEMBLE AN EMERGENCY KIT

Stock up on supplies for at least three days, including:

Non-perishable food and water (one gallon per person per day)

Flashlights and batteries

First aid supplies

Medications and necessary medical equipment

Important documents in a waterproof container

Cash on hand (ATMs may be down)

Battery-powered radio

Personal hygiene items and extra clothing

3

SECURE YOUR HOME

Fortify your home by:

Installing impact-resistant windows and doors

Trimming trees and securing outdoor items

Reinforcing garage doors

Checking for loose shingles on your roof

Designating a safe room or reinforced interior space for added protection

4

REVIEW INSURANCE COVERAGE

Ensure your insurance includes wind and flood protection, as standard policies may not cover floods. Consider separate flood insurance, and document your property with photos or videos.

By Zakry Tyrrell, Stuart resident

5

STAY INFORMED

Follow reliable weather forecasts and sign up for emergency alerts. If evacuation is required, follow authorities’ instructions promptly.

BY PREPARING IN ADVANCE, TREASURE COAST RESIDENTS CAN REDUCE RISKS AND STAY SAFE DURING HURRICANE SEASON. PROPER PLANNING ENSURES YOU’RE READY TO WEATHER ANY STORM.

WHAT STYLE HOME HAVE YOU PURCHASED?

COASTAL CONTEMPORARY

Coastal contemporary homes feature clean lines and utilize natural materials and textures. Opt for bold choices while maintaining simplicity in design and basic finishes. Establish a neutral palette with sleek steel, timber, and woven elements. Incorporate visual interest through statement artwork and furniture, ensuring the space remains uncluttered.

KEY WEST

This style exudes vibrant ocean blues, lively yellows and greens, and tropical patterns, drawing inspiration from the stunning surroundings.

MEDITERRANEAN

The Mediterranean style places a strong emphasis on blending indoor and outdoor living spaces, with a focus on maximizing natural light and scenic outdoor views. It features characteristic arched windows, doors, and interior casings, along with exposed beams, natural stone walls, and either tile or hardwood flooring, creating interiors that feel spacious and breezy.

SPANISH

Spanish-style living spaces evoke a sense of tradition, sophistication, and coziness. Modern Spanish decor combines elements of Spanish colonial design with contemporary touches, resulting in a unique hybrid style. Traditional elements like terracotta vases, rustic wood furniture, and quatrefoil windows are paired with modern sofas, wall colors, and lighting fixtures.

RANCH

With its open floor plan, the ranch-style home is well-suited for families with seniors or young children. However, redecorating a ranch home can pose challenges due to its distinctive features, which may appear somewhat outdated. Nonetheless, with a touch of creativity and the right materials, you can rejuvenate your home and infuse it with a stylish and modern vibe.

Transform your outdoor space into a coastal paradise with these expert tips for coastal exterior decoration and design:

▸ Embrace natural elements like wood, stone, and rattan.

▸ Choose a coastal color palette with shades of blue, aqua, and sandy beige.

▸ Create inviting outdoor living areas with comfortable seating and dining options.

▸ Enhance landscaping with native coastal plants and water features.

▸ Illuminate your space with soft, warm lighting and nautical-inspired fixtures.

▸ Add nautical accents and personalized decor to infuse coastal charm.

▸ Incorporate water features and personal touches for a tranquil oasis.

▸ Personalize your outdoor space with beach-inspired decor and vintage finds.

With these tips, you can create a coastal-inspired outdoor retreat that captures the beauty and serenity of the coast.

FISHING & BOATING, NAVIGATING

THE SAILFISH CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!

The Stuart/Martin County area has so much to offer in the way of boating/watersports with its miles of ocean and Intracoastal shoreline.

It is considered the sailfish capital of the world! The Intracoastal Waterway, which connects New Jersey to Texas, runs through Martin County, before branching off to go west across the state. This portion of the Intracoastal Waterway is known as the Okeechobee Waterway and is the only way you can get across the state of Florida by water.

By Captain Steve Ash, Stuart resident
Stuart Sandbar

Our offshore fishing gives you many options – you can troll for mahi mahi, sailfish, wahoo, or mackerel. Further, you can bottom fish our many reefs and wrecks for grouper, snapper, cobia, sea bass, and many other species. Do you prefer inshore fishing? We have plenty of snook, trout, pompano, bonefish, snapper, mackerel, and tarpon. We even have freshwater fishing on the Okeechobee Waterway, which holds largemouth bass, as well as snook and tarpon! Travel the Okeechobee Waterway into Lake Okeechobee, and you will find bluegill, crappie, and red ear sunfish.

Fishing is just the tip of the iceberg! Martin County has many sandbars and two islands for sunbathing, swimming, watersports or just getting away from it all. If you travel south on the Intracoastal Waterway, you will find the Saint Lucie Inlet State Park and Nature Center. Just travel a few miles south of there, and you come to Peck Lake Park where you can beach your boat on the riverbank and walk over the dune to your own secluded beach on the ocean.

If you prefer to dine by boat, downtown Stuart has a wonderful floating dock with many public slips where you can dock your boat and find any type of food your pallet calls out for! Want the fresh catch of the day? Visit the restaurants of the Manatee Pocket for the freshest seafood around! The Stuart/Martin County area is a boater’s paradise, and you can do it 365 days a year!

MY FAVORITE THESE ARE A FEW OF

WITH SO MUCH TO DO AND SEE IN THE STUART AREA, IT’S HARD TO CHOOSE JUST ONE OR TWO FAVORITES. FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH, THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF MY FAVORITES:

KAISHIN:

Great sushi and small plates made by a true traditional sushi chef. The spicy scallop appetizer is my favorite.

EMMAN’S:

Colorful Asian-inspired dishes made with the freshest ingredients by a highly trained chef. The flavors are out of this world.

KAZU:

Small but excellent lunch and dinner spot featuring a large menu full of salads, appetizers, sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls, and other fine Japanese cuisine. One of my favorites for the food and service.

RIVERWALK:

My favorite restaurant in Downtown Stuart for top-shelf oysters and other fresh seafood. Outstanding burger, salads, and an everchanging specials menu.

CLARETTA’S:

First-class Italian dishes made with the highest-quality ingredients. Exceptional dining experience. You will not be disappointed.

INDIAN RIVERSIDE PARK:

Martin County’s landmark destination with attractions such as children’s museum, fishing pier, Tuckahoe Mansion, amphitheater and Henry Sewall’s home.

BEACHES:

There are so many free public beach accesses that you can always find an uncrowded spot to yourself almost any day of the week. Good spots for fishing, shelling, surfing, kiteboarding, and skimboarding or just relaxing.

CAUSEWAYS:

One of the best places to watch gorgeous sunsets. Excellent fishing and exercise spots too.

BOAT RAMPS:

Numerous updated public ramps throughout the area make it easy to find an open space to drop your boat and enjoy a beautiful day out on the water.

FISHING:

Plenty of inshore and offshore species thrive in this area such as sailfish, dolphin/mahi, snapper, trout, grouper, snook, redfish, and tarpon making this a fishing hot spot.

DOWNTOWN JENSEN BEACH:

Tons of charm! Plenty of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options plus the Jammin’ in Jensen scene every Thursday night. I love 11 Maple St.

DOWNTOWN STUART:

One of the most quaint Downtown areas ever! Wide variety of fine shopping and dining. Nice place to take a stroll by the water. Boat parking also available.

CASTRONOVA’S CHOCOLATE:

Just the fragrance alone will have you hooked. I am all about their truffles, especially the dark chocolate and rum coconut, but you can’t go wrong with anything they make. Decadence at its finest.

WHAT IS

Pickleball has quickly become the fastest-growing sport in the U.S., attracting players of all ages and skill levels. This dynamic game combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, played with a lightweight, perforated plastic ball and solid paddles. Whether played indoors or outdoors, pickleball is a fun, social activity that can be enjoyed by everyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes.

THE BASICS OF PICKLEBALL

Court Size: The pickleball court measures 20 by 44 feet—about the same size as a doubles badminton court, but smaller than a tennis court.

Lines and Zones: The court features similar lines to those of a tennis court, with right and left service areas. In front of the net is a 7-foot non-volley zone, commonly referred to as the “kitchen”.

Paddles: Pickleball paddles come in various materials, including fiberglass, carbon fiber, and graphite. Generally, thinner paddles provide more power, while thicker paddles offer better control and consistency. The best paddle for you depends on your playing style and skill level.

Shoes: For optimal support and performance, it’s recommended to wear tennis shoes or specialized pickleball shoes. These shoes offer better grip, stability, and cushioning than running shoes, which are not suitable for the lateral movements required in pickleball.

A Brief History of Pickleball Pickleball was invented in 1965 by three friends in Bainbridge Island, Washington. The sport’s unusual name comes from one of the inventors’ dog, Pickles, who loved to chase after the ball during their early games.

Why Play Pickleball? Pickleball isn’t just a great way to stay active—it’s also a fantastic way to meet new people and build social connections. Whether you’re playing with family, friends, or strangers, the game fosters a fun, friendly environment where laughter and camaraderie are as important as winning.

LOCAL TIP

“On a cool, sunny day, make sure to visit Jonathan Dickinson State Park. It’s the perfect place to pack a picnic and spend the day outside. You can simply go for a car ride through the park, walk a mile, or go for 10 miles. Dogs are welcome on leashes! Admission is $6 per vehicle; a year-long pass highly suggested for early birds who want to get there before 8 or stay for sunset.” – Emily T.
