N°2 - Autumn 2009

Editorial The lazy days of summer are over. Now our thoughts turn to autumn, an evocative season of warm colour, soft texture and hushed lighting. Of course, the home is at the heart of this new mood - it’s the place where the changing season is marked by a shift in how we live and with what we surround ourselves. From a desire to stay cool and refreshed now we wish for those things that make us feel snug against the cold of the outside. As always SIA has translated this season’s major trends to create key pieces that allow you to beautifully update your home in the way that feels right for you - because it’s important that you choose those things that you love, that reflect your style and personality. And it couldn’t be easier. SIA’s autumn collection has all you need with a range of accessories that perfectly reflect the new season trends. This autumn is all about simple luxury, a refined elegance that is also deeply comfortable. The monochrome palette of black and white gives a graphic and sophisticated look but is softened with texture. As well, the meeting of the urban and the natural creates a style that is both chic and easy to use. To these add candles galore - a fast and effective way to create an atmosphere that’s both cosy and intimate. Whatever you do, just follow your heart - and your imagination - to create a home that truly reflects you… I

Autumnal charm Time to rediscover ‘home sweet home’ As sunny days turn crisp and mists drift across the landscape, we can’t help but fall for the magic of autumn. It’s time now to come inside, to curl up with a good book or pull out long-forgotten board games for shared fun with family and friends. It’s also the perfect time to indulge your love of fine things, to be inspired by the new season and dress your home for warmth as well as beauty. How? It’s easy! All you need to do, for example, is add some beautifully embroidered cushions or juxtapose an ornately framed mirror against the smoothness of a porcelain vase. For this autumn is thick with texture, mixing the rough with the smooth in a colour palette that evokes the spirit of this romantic time - chocolate brown, chestnut, mushroom plus the lightness of café latte and a splash of petrol blue.

Smart idea : give a room instant chic by placing a group of candles of differing sizes on a tray or metal plate. I

Botanical Brio!

Creating a striking autumn display hinges on the relationship between the vase and the flower.

It doesn’t have to be complicated, instead focus on the visual impact that comes from choosing a vase that highlights and enhances the ruggedness of a protea say, or the gentle beauty of phalaenopsis orchids. And why use just flowers? For a twist on the traditional, try branches of berries, seed pods and even the frothy heads of seed grasses. Definitely a bouquet with a difference. Smart idea: choose a vase of an unusual shape or texture and add just one stem. Unfussy but striking all the same. I

Kitchen attitude

Enjoy the

delights of good food

Today the kitchen is a special place in the home, not just where you rustle up mouth-watering dishes but also a place for mingling with friends and family as a meal is prepared. Once just a functional space, today style is as important here as in the rest of the house. Simple but beautiful objects come together to create a room that is a pleasure to spend time in. Introduce a dash of laid-back lounge chic with candles in a selection of glass holders. Smart idea : don’t stash your spices out of sight. Instead place them into well-sealed but attractive jars or boxes and put them on display. Instant decoration! I

SIA: What was most important to you when designing your kitchen? Tina: Before I began the design I thought about how I moved about and worked in my kitchen. I asked myself: where are the best places for the oven and sink? And will I have enough space for a beautiful chopping board?

SIA: When entertaining, how do you create a calm atmosphere in the kitchen and around the table? Tina: The atmosphere must always be relaxed. The secret is to stay calm. Everything doesn’t have to be ready in time for the arrival of your guests. Let them relax with a glass of wine while you get on with any last-minute preparations.

SIA: Watching you cook on television, it all appears so easy. What are your tips for creating good food without panicking? Tina: Think about what you want to do before you start, stay relaxed and really take pleasure in cooking. There are so many great cookbooks and internet sites out there, where you can find recipes and inspiration. The most important thing: enjoy yourself! www.tina.se

Discover Luxury in Simplicity Good quality can make everyday things special. Made from materials that are long-lasting and perhaps designed with a graphic pattern they can give real pleasure. A perfect example of this new style simplicity? SIA’s Avoriaz and Essential lines of tablecloths, table runners, tea towels and towels in plain cotton or striped. Smart idea: need a gift idea? Give something both lovely and useful - three graphic tea-towels tied with a pretty cotton ribbon.I

THE CREATIVE HOTHOUSE From the first sketch to the finished product, the making of a SIA collection is a detailed and meticulous process. To see for ourselves just how it all comes together we went behind the scenes to see how the Braga collection of china was created. It all begins in the office of the SIA designers. Their mission? To create a line of timeless and beautifully proportioned china. First the framework of the collection is decided upon, from the materials to the look and the feel. This done, sketches are made, such as these here of the Braga jug. Once this design has been approved, the rest of the collection, from salad bowls, to serving dishes, storage boxes and oil and vinegar sets, is conceived. Then to Portugal, the home of expert manufacturers in glazed ceramics. The first sample is hand-thrown in clay, then glazed and fired. SIA’s designer then carefully checks the finished product to ensure that the design as well as the thickness, colour and glaze are exactly right. Small irregularities, caused by the jug being hand-made, are celebrated rather than discarded for this is what will give the collection its unique character. Once signed-off, the mould is made from this first hand-made sample, and soon the production process begins. A few weeks later Braga is ready to go into the shops – and your home. I

The Casual Charm of an Autumn Table Autumn is a time for relaxing meals with friends and family. Perhaps they begin in the kitchen with a glass of wine but soon they move to the table where the main meal begins. A beautifully but still casually dressed table is essential for making your guests kick back and enjoy themselves. Here the forever chic combination of black and white is made less formal with natural fabrics and simple ceramics. Glowing gently in the candlelight, the small bouquets of white flowers are captivating. Together they create a mood that welcomes everyone to the table and a good time is guaranteed.

Smart idea: A simple way to create an eye-catching centrepiece is by alternating low-slung vases of flowers with candles in glass holders of varying sizes. Place them in pairs for a balanced look. I

Invite graphic chic into your living room

ROCK

Glam

meets high

This autumn elegance takes on quite a different look. Smart yet with more than a touch of glamour, black and white is updated with metallic lustre that comes alive under the glow of candlelight. Large scale mirrors add to the soft rock feel by washing light around the room to further enhance the shine. The look is graphic but the straight lines are mellowed by sensual shapes and touch-me textures - think velvet, leather effect and shimmering fabrics; embroidered cotton but also the luxury of faux fur. And to finish, a soothing scent that brings nature into this strong urban mood. Discover the new Mystical Forest perfume that’s part of SIA’s Style & Spirit range, and tempt your senses with a delicious mix of citrus, spices, cedar, white musk and fragrant Manila resin. Smart idea: create a decorative still life with a collection of vases and jars that play with volume, colour and form. Choose varying sizes as well as curvy shapes and contrasting textures, from smooth porcelain to beaten metal and even glass. Add one of two floral stems that are graphic, not sweetly pretty, to complete the look. Done. I 1

Metallics and mirrors create a new style element This season’s sophisticated template is all about playing with contrasts - a richly decorated candlestick next to the purity of a glass hurricane, a statement glass chandelier suspended above a mirrored table of sharply geometric lines. Together not only do you have the interplay of opposites but the lustre of the materials and the reflections they create add another, and quite breathtaking, style element. Similarly, silvery cushions sparkle all the more when set against faux fur and mirrored columns are a foil to oversized ceramic jars of greenery. Chic glamour anywhere in the home. I

Floral couture

High fashion flowers

SIA flowers are easy to use, moulding into any shape that’s asked of them - which makes it easy for you to create your own floral haute couture. Autumn’s graphic mood perfectly suits the classic beauty of the white flower. For a spectacular display, go dramatic with the statuesque calla or orchid. With flowers such as these what would otherwise be an everyday bouquet is transformed into a graceful sculpture. True art. Smart idea: maintain the structure of a bouquet with a bejewelled napkin ring. Practical but beautiful too. I

Your book of flower trends As with fashion the world of floral art follows the mood of the season with trends that evolve throughout the year. Again you can rely on SIA’s style gurus to accurately decipher the next big thing. This autumn the look is all about intense colour - rich reds, hot, sexy crimsons, the deep shades of a Bordeaux vintage plus the full spectrum of dusky pinks and purples. Flowers of the season include roses, dahlias - the neat Pom Poms to the more flamboyant Majestics - as well as wild asters. Red is the starting point of any display and for this you can’t ignore anthurium, Vanda and Phalaenopsis orchids as well as banksia and protea for exotic luxury. To these add a more rustic element with branches of berries and even rhubarb leaves. This season’s love of contrasts can be seen with flowers too, with the mixing of the delicate and the tough, the local with the exotic. Fabulous! I

Floral art’s new rules A truly beautiful bouquet needs the perfect vase - otherwise its style and beauty can easily be lost. 2

If the shape, colour, material are not in harmony they will fight against each other and the effect will be one of chaos instead of balance. What you choose is, of course, down to your personal taste but whether it be the transparency of glass or the opaqueness of ceramics, with this autumn’s rich palette it is better to choose a neutral coloured vase so it compliments rather than clashes with the flowers. When it comes to shape and size - be bold! A round bouquet can look as spectacular perched atop a tall, slim vase as it can in one that is low-slung and round. A final word - you don’t need to stick to traditional vases. Gorgeous floral arrangements can look amazing in the most unusual of containers, from a sweet tin to a pretty bowl. Not convinced? Then head to your nearest SIA store to be amazed - and inspired. I
