독엣지 콜카타 피칭 포럼 참가를 위한 숙박 및 뱃지

선정된 20편 내외의 다큐멘터리에 총 3억 5천만 원을 제작비 및 개봉지원비로 지급한다 . 지원 분야는 크게 ‘ 제작지원(총 18편) ’ 과

‘ 개봉 및 배급지원(총 2편) ’ 으로 나뉜다 . ‘ 제작지원 ’ 분야는 장편 다큐멘터리( 10편) , DMZ 프로젝트( 2편) , 6

신진작가 다큐멘터리( 5편)로 공모작 중 선정된 우수 작품에 총 2억 9천만 원을 지원한다 . 또한 협약을 통해 4개국의 아시아 청년

다큐멘터리 작가들의 공동제작 옴니버스 작품 한 편에 총 2천만 원을 지원한다 .

‘ 개봉 및 배급지원 ’ 은 다큐멘터리 영화가 극장에서 개봉하기 쉽지 않은 현실적 문제를 해결하고 더 많은 관객과 만날 수 있도록 극장 상영을 지원하기 위한 프로그램이다 . 9회 DMZ국제다큐영화제 공식 초청작 중 2018년 내 극장 개봉을 계획하고 있는 60분 이상의 한국 다큐멘터리를 대상으로 2편을 선정해 총 4천만 원을 지원한다 . 올해 제작지원 공모에는 한국 87편 , 아시아 72편으로 총 159편이 응모했다 . 예심을 통해 총 21편의 프로젝트를 공개발표

참가작으로 선정하였으며 , 영화제 기간 중 열리는 ‘ 공개발표 ’ 를 통해 최종 지원작 17편을 선정할 예정이다 . ‘ 공개발표 ’ 를 통해 현재 기획 • 제작 중인 다큐멘터리의 제작 상황을 공유하고 전문가 및 예비 관객들의 의견을 듣는 기회를 갖게 될 것이다 .

DMZ국제다큐영화제 제작지원의 특징으로 상대적으로 제작비

펀딩 및 작품 완성이 어려운 ‘ 신진작가 ’ 에 대한 지원을 들 수 있는데 , 신진작가 부문을 통해 총 5천만원의 지원금을 5편에

9회 DMZ국제다큐영화제

지원할 예정이다 . 이와 별도로 , 대명문화공장이 선정하는 ‘ 대명컬처웨이브상 ’ 은 극장 개봉을 목표로 하는 60분 이상의 장편다큐 1편에 총 1천만 원을 지원한다 .

‘The DMZ Docs Fund’ will award 350 million Korean won

to about 20 documentary projects finally selected for their production or release. The Fund Program is divided into two categories, ‘Fund for Production (18 projects)’ and ‘Fund for Release (2 projects).’

‘Fund for Production’ is distributed to Korean or Asian featurelength documentary (10 projects), DMZ Documentary Project (2 projects) and New Directors’ Documentary Project (5 projects), a total of 290 million Korean won will be provided to the best projects selected from the entries submitted.

In addition, ‘Fund for Production’ supports an omnibus documentary for Asian Docs Co-production Network through the agreement with the young documentarists from four countries in Asia.

This year for ‘Fund for Production’, a total of 159 projects submitted applications, including 87 from Korea and 72 from Asia. And a total of 21 projects that passed the preliminaries were qualified for the Public Presentation. And the 17 projects for the Fund will be selected through the Public Presentation event during the Festival. The Public Presentation will be a chance to share situations and conditions of documentary projects in production or in the planning stage and to take professional advice or listen to opinion of future audience.

In addition, ‘Daemyung Culture Wave Award’ will be awarded to one of the Korean projects for the production or the theatrical release.

작품 중 60분 이상의 2018년 내 극장 개봉을 계획 중인 한국 장편 다큐

screening for the feature-length documentaries that can solve real difficulties in releasing at the theaters and connect with a wider audience. Among the Korean feature-length documentaries(minimum of 60min) officially invited in the 9th DMZ Docs and preparing for the release at theaters in the first half of 2018, 2 films selected will be supported with a total of 40 million won.

A feature of the DMZ Docs Funds is the support program for the new directors who relatively have difficulty with receiving the funding for production and completing the films. It will provide a total of 50 million won to 5 projects through funding for New Directors’ Documentary Project.

Grace Simbulan is a freelance director,

Park Seon-kyu, his vision is to communicate with and unite humanity through producing collaborative films which can transcend borders and ethnicities. He travels to remote places and explore project opportunities such as A Barefoot Dream (2009), filmed in East Timor and God’s Eye View (2013), filmed in Cambodia and selected at the BIFF.

Synopsis: Agustin, a 41-year old tribesman, cannot read and write. He belongs to an indigenous group in the Philippines called the Aeta. The Aetas are the last hunter-gatherers in the country, inhabiting some isolated, mountainous parts of the island of Luzon. Mining, deforestation and illegal logging have caused their population to steadily decrease. The government affords them little or no protection. Like Agustin, most Aetas are illiterate. Seeing that they can no longer solely depend on the forest for their food, Agustin realizes the need to keep up with modern times. One day, he enrolls in Grade 1. With the goal to get a college degree, Agustin starts learning the ABC’ s and 123’ s.

Director’ s statement: The Aetas, an indigenous group, were among the earliest settlers of the Philippines. During the volcanic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991, they were forced to evacuate the mountains in search of safer dwelling places. Since then, Aetas have long been fighting for their right to ancestral land, representation in the government, and their right to education. I met an Aeta named Agustin Tiburcio while shooting another documentary in 2011. We spent some time around the village and I spent some time shooting around him. I found out 2 things about him: Agustin was 40 years old. And, he just started first grade elementary school. His goals were simple: to learn how to read and write. I knew then that his story had to be told. I revisited their town after two years on a whim.

I was glad to find out that he had moved up to third grade. He had bigger dreams this time. He now wanted to lead and represent their tribe. Agustin’ s peers and relatives thought he was a joke. Nevertheless, this did not stop him from going to grade school.

I took me several trips to their town to earn his trust and to document his story.

Agustin’ s story is a combination of pleasant and woeful anecdotes and of youthfulness and laughter amid struggle. This documentary aims to generate awareness about the day-to-day struggles of present-day Aetas through the eyes of Agustin Tiburcio, a 44-year old Aeta in grade-school.

미술감독이다 . 몇몇 장 , 단편 영화에 배우로 참여하면서

기관들과 함께 다양한 방송 형식으로 수백 시간 분량의

영화 제작에 입문했다 . <비스트모드 : 사회 실험>은 그의

콘텐츠를 제작했다 .

Mesina graduated from the Visual Communication program of the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He is currently the artistic director of the ‘UP Repertory Company’, the official performing group of the Philippines’ main state university. His transition to filmmaking started in several short and full-length films as an actor, and Beastmode: A Social Experiment is his directorial debut.

Amante is an independent video producer for TV, film and web. Since 2012, she has been traveling with diverse multi-cultural crew shooting stories that reflect the Filipino culture and experience. She has produced hundreds of hours of content for different TV formats, news features and awareness campaigns working with organizations like WWF, National Geographic, FOX, CBC and so on.

악명 높은 남부에서 가장 큰 도시의 시장이었던 로드리고 두테르테였다 . 두테르테 시장은 그의 암살단에 대한 흉흉한 소문이 퍼져감에도 불구하고 마약과 범죄와 싸우는 모습이 널리 알려지면서 많은 지지를 받았다 . 그는 지금까지 해왔던 범죄와의 전쟁을 전국적으로 시행하겠다는 공약을 걸고 대선에 출마했다 . 정치 캠프에서 소셜미디어를 통해 중상모략과 흑색선전을 유포하면서 , 가짜 뉴스가 퍼져나갔다 . 현실세계에서는 정치가문들이 권력을 추구하면서 실제로 많은 사람들이 죽어갔다 . 영화는 그 당시의 대혼란과 격렬해지는 증오와 폭력의 미사여구를 풍자하기 위한 아이디어에서 시작됐다 .

Synopsis: Beastmode: A Social Experiment is a documentary that follows the altercation between popular Filipino actors Baron Geisler and Kiko Matos. Secretly crafted as a social media experiment, the actors’ quarrel has been documented and uploaded on social media, sparking widespread interest among audiences, mass media outlets, and businesses eager to ride on the issue’ s popularity.

While these events unfold, dramatic changes are also happening in the wider Filipino culture and society as new president Rodrigo Duterte comes to power with his hardline stance against drugs and criminality. The documentary follows the experiment and election timeline as it weaves three narratives: what the audiences saw, what the audiences did not see and what we all choose to look away from ( the spate of violent rhetoric and killings fermenting in past and present-day Filipino society) .

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is known and loved by many for fighting drugs and criminality in his city even as rumors of his death squad spread. Duterte ran for president with the promise to do the same with the entire country. Beastmode: A Social Experiment started with an idea to satirize the pandemonium and intensifying rhetoric of hate and violence of that time.

Her main goal is to keep creating cinematic documentary films with social relevance.

Wena Sanchez is an independent filmmaker and producer from the Philippines. Her film, Nick & Chai (2014) competed in IDFA, BIFF, and other festivals. She’s in post-production on her second documentary entitled All Grown Up. Aside from her own projects, she’s also producing other documentaries that are intimate and socially-relevant.

Synopsis: In Angeles City, Philippines, sex workers and mixed-race children abound due to sex tourism. We get a closer look of this place and, at the same time, we try to get inside the psyche of two women: AMY, a former sex worker and BLONDIE, Amy’ s half-German daughter. They’ re mirroring each other-Amy shows the past, Blondie shows the possible future. BLONDIE is now at a crossroads. She is trying to finish High school but she’ s also working in a bar as a cashier. Her one foot is in school, her other foot is in the bar. Will she be able to live a different life or will she follow in the footsteps of her mother?

Director’ s statement: In a very Christian country where sex is sacred and considered best done after marriage, Angeles is definitely a different world from the rest of the Philippines.

There, both men and women see a woman’ s body as an object, an opportunity for business. They openly and nonchalantly talk about sex and prostitution like fishermen discussing their day’ s catch. I want to get as close as possible to this world. Through these close observations, I want to know just how fragile women are - when it comes to love, sex, raising children, and finding financial stability and dignity in this unique world they inhabit. I hope to answer my questions on why I cannot hate these women despite of what they do. This film would also hopefully start conversations on the root cause of this, what can be done and what can’ t be prevented, how to ensure that these women are protected, and a hundred other questions that seem to be brushed under the rug because we refuse to look.

Director’ s statement: I met the brothers in 2008. Seong-ho has autism spectrum disorder, also known as ‘ Savant Syndrome’ . In Seong-ho’ s case, it demonstrates itself as a prodigious capability for playing the piano and memorizing entire scores at a glance. However, he struggles to wash his face by himself. His mother gave up all her savings and sacrificed much of her life to support him. Meanwhile, Seongho’ s younger brother Geon-gi has been in his brother’ s shadow his entire life, and gave up playing piano to support the family. After 9 years later, Geon-gi is preparing his life without family, Seung-ho’ s music became skilled but mother is getting older.

Synopsis: Nadia is 12 years old. She and her friends live in the trash village. They spend 17 hours a day collecting plastics from the trash mountain. Most of their daytime activities, including sleeping and eating, occur in the mountain. Their families owe money from the trash mountain boss and collecting trash that worth something is the only way to repay the debt. In this inequitable system, it is only the boss who becomes richer while the families’ debt never gets smaller.

One of Nadia’ s friend even lost his arm in the mountain because he approached too close to the excavator while attempting to collect ‘ good’ trash. There is no promise for better future in the mountain. Nadia wants to become a doctor. It is apparent to Nadia that she won’ t be able to go to a college and live up to her dream in the mountain. She has to, somehow, escape the mountain and pursue a path that will take her to better life.

Director’ s statement: The Inescapable Mountain is a human documentary film which shows how garbage industry system enslaves children. The struggle of children who won’ t succumb to modern slavery casts a severe warning to adults. When adults submitted to unfair authority, children did not. Children didn’ t give up their dreams for a different world, and hoped to live on as free beings. Therefore, children standing up to slavery under hopeless circumstances reflects recovery of humanity. Through The Inescapable Mountain project we will bring child labor problem to an global issue, gather attention from the public, and lead a campaign to find an alternative solution.

Synopsis: Kim Yong-ja for 40 years and Kim Jin-suk for 31 years dream a same dream everyday. Kim Yong-ja had dreamed of being a nurse saving people, but attempted suicide by collecting 30 pep pills distributed by the factory. Living a struggling life with 5 previous convictions and listed on the blacklist, she has lived till now for a dream of just one victory. Both of them got canned when they were 22 & 26 years old, and now they become in her 50’ s and 60’ s. It becomes 71 years that two of them have dreamed of same dream all together.

Director’ s statement: This film is the archive of feelings of two women who have walked the unfinished road as not only female laborers but also dismissed workers. It is also the internal memoirs of the brave women who fought against injustice. These two women fought in order to banish fear over 30 and 40 years each and couldn’ t give up because of their sensitiveness of pain. It’ s already been so long they realized their own pains were not only their own, and lots of lives were abandoned on the unfinished road. Different sensibilities appear on their bodies and minds by the long time on the road where they have walked, and among words they whispered by themselves in order to overcome fear. These two women get unusual sense for others and justice in this world. Like the fear that these two women confronted were converted into their courage, their stories of resistance become the poetry of existence on the road.

Logline: After almost 70 years past, there are still distortion and disparaging of Jeju 4 · 3 incident as a revolt ordered by North Korea. If you listen to the people of Jeju island who were sent to prison without a trial when the 4 · 3 incident happened, of what they had been through, it is hard to deny the necessity of the governments responsible action and apologies for historical injustice.

Synopsis: It took only one week for the National Intelligence Service( NIS) to fabricate ‘ Lee Seok-ki’ s rebellion plot incident’ to form public opinion and to imprison all who were involved. The basis of this planned ‘ rebellion plot’ presented by the NIS, was only one a secretly recorded transcript( more than 450 points in it were fabricated) of lawmaker Lee Seok-ki’ s speech, reported in the Han-kook Ilbo. This documentary, through the division of Korea, ideological conflicts and interests of the power, traces in detail how a newspaper account, which became the decisive grounds for the Unified Progressive Party’ s dissolution, spread into hundreds of speculative articles during one week and finally led to the UPP’ s dissolution.

Director’ s statement: The case of ‘ Lee Seok-ki’ s rebellion plot’ —even without any ‘ acts’ of rebellion plot—punished the detainees on the basis of the Lee’ s ‘ words’ and, with the ideas analogized from these words, it forcibly dissolved the Unified Progressive Party. It was possible because of the media outlets’ persistent attacks on ‘ proNorth Korea followers’ with ‘ color politics,’ which was concentrated during a single week from the first report of the recorded transcript to the National Assembly’ s approval for arrest motion for lawmaker Lee. This film covers those arrested and released, their families and people around the UPP. In doing so, it looks into the problems of Korean society that made those involved guilty in the court of public opinion even before a formal trial happened.

Synopsis: In 1965, following a failed coup d’ etat, many Indonesians that were accused of being affiliated with the Indonesian Communist Party were arrested, tortured, raped, and killed. The tragedy that affected hundreds of thousands people was never openly acknowledged by the Indonesian government. The survivors of this tragedy suffered a deep stigma and discrimination until now. Song For My Children tells the story of a group of elderly female survivors of 1965 tragedy and members of their family, who formed a choir group known as Dialita. They sing songs that were written by 1965 political prisoners in jail as well as other wellknown songs that have been silenced for more than fifty years.

Director’ s statement: The film intimately inter-weaves the current lives of the characters, their backgrounds, the backgrounds of the songs that were sung and their drive to encourage discussions on 1965 tragedy with the younger generation through the power of music. The narrative arc of the film is Dialita’ s preparation for their next big concert, which is held with young independent musicians. At the end of the film, we will experience how Dialita’ s activities have become a form of trauma healing for its members. They begin to accept and to be publicly open about their identity as survivors and family of survivors, an identity that stigmatized them throughout their lives. This film will use both observational scenes and voice over that are taken from interviews with the protagonists. The film will also use archives of videos and photos that are connected to the tragedy of 1965.

Since he started his career as a documentary filmmaker in 1999, he has involved in many documentary films which covered with tragic disasters in Asia such as Daegu Subway Accident(Korea, 2004), Sichuan Earthquake(China, 2005), Fukushima Earthquake(Japan, 2011), etc. He went down to Jindo 3 days after the ferry accident and had stayed with victims’ families for almost 3 years to record their unendurable time.

Director’ s statement: Unrecovered is the story about loss. Eun-hwa’ s mom, Gum-hee lost many things for the past 3 years. What she really lost from the Sewol ferry incident? She lost her daughter, human nature, ordinary life, her left-behind son, etc. We can easily imagine these things. In this film, we would like to cover what she really lost. 나는 관찰 촬영 방식을 선호한다 . 그 이유는 일어나는 모든 일을 촬영할 수 있고 간혹 의도한 장면을 만들기도 하고 재구성하기도 하지만 가장 자연스러운 주인공의 일상을 담는 것이 가능하기 때문이다 . 카미나와 쿠스달리니가 활동하고 서로 소통하는 것을 촬영할 때는 롱 샷 또는 미디엄 샷을 사용했다 . 그리고 비록 집이 좁아 공간이 한정적이었지만 촬영 시 그들과 일정 거리를 두며 그들이 움직일 수 있는 공간을 확보해 놓았고 대상을 따라가며 촬영하는 팔로우 샷과 순간에 좌지우지되는 스틸 샷도 활용했다 .

Synopsis: Kaminah( 70) and Kusdalini( 74) have living together in their modest house.

They fulfill their needs by selling crackers. Both taking care of each other. Now, Kusdalini has dementia. Her memory mixes between present and past. Kaminah often reminds Kusdalini about what actually happens. Their life depends on each other; their intimacy is the endurance in life thus they are able to see the tragic past into a comedy. Though their daily life is limited, it’ s quite dynamic.

However, since Kusdalini has stroke and been hospitalized, Kusdalini becomes very depending on Kaminah. They are no longer doing things together. They have living together for more than 50 years since their first encounter in jail post 65 chaos.

Director’ s statement: I choose observational approach because camera records everything that happens and letting the protagonist does her daily life as natural as possible although in some situations I make it happens or reconstructs. I choose long shot or medium shot when Kaminah and Kusdalini doing their activities and interacting. I give some distance to give them space to move, even though their house is small and limit our space. There are several follow shots, camera moves following the subject, and there are also still shots which depend on the moment.

In 2013, he completed his first feature length documentary, My Place, which documents his sister’s single-motherhood and his family’s experience of reverse migration from Canada to Korea. In 2017, he won best documentary award at Jeonju International Film Festival for his film, Blue Butterfly Effect, that documents the Anti-THAAD peace protests of Seong-ju.

Synopsis: Tensions are on the rise in the Korean peninsula. However, in a small farming county, Seong-ju, site of the US anti-missile system, THAAD, there are people who are yearning for peace and re-unification. The residents of Seongju, who have protested against THAAD for over a year, believe that peace in the peninsula will enable the reversal of THAAD. The residents of Seongju are prepared to block roads to stop the deployment of 4 additional THAAD launchers. And in attempt to broaden the struggle, are reaching out to other regions that have US bases of their own, such as Pyeong-taek, Gang-jeong and Kyokamisaki( Japan) . They are also preparing to change dysfunctional local politics by participating in local elections.

Director’ s statement: Tensions in the Korean peninsula are on the rise as North Korea continues its missile tests and Trump threatens direct military action. As the North threatens the US mainland with the launch of an ICBM, South Korean president Moon Jae-in ordered the deployment of the 4 remaining THAAD launchers. However, THAAD cannot counter North Korean ICBMs. Regardless of its military capabilities, in the South, THAAD has now become a symbol of national security and a means to strengthen the US-Korean alliance. However, adding more weapons to this ongoing military conflict, will only make matters worse.

By focusing on the Anti-THAAD struggle for peace in Seong-ju, this film will advocate for more diplomatic and peaceful solutions to the ongoing conflict within the region.

Synopsis: The once-busy ‘ Rendezvous house’ for unconverted long-term prisoners is now resided by two prisoners in their 80’ s, who cannot return to North Korea as they have been forcefully converted. I meet Park Hee-sung, one of the remaining prisoners, whose aspiration was to become a director of cinematography. As I give him a camera and teach him how to film, he starts filming his daily life. Then he goes on to film his comrades with infirmities of old age as well as memorable places in South Korea he revisits. What he captures on his camera becomes his memories to leave behind and also the letters, which will be sent to his home one day.

Director’ s statement: Thoughts and ideologies come from life-strangers who are poles apart can become close friends if they spend enough time, sharing conversations. I wanted to hear the stories of those who have lived with different ideologies, those who are not heroes nor spies but just simply, people, whose daily lives would not be described as historic or significant. This way, ‘ their’ times can finally meet with ‘ ours’ . Park’ s filming conveys the emotions of a man who has lived not the history but a life, and my filming endeavors to capture the moments in which two people become close. In so doing, I ponder upon how different people can understand and live with one another.

Synopsis: Pastor Lee Gyeong-ok who lost his leg when playing house with his friends as a child, Lee Young-sik who lost his both arms and an eye on the way to the riverside with his sister to do laundry, Kim Jung-ho who cursed the world for his misery after losing an arm and his eye sight, the pain and suffer that struck all these people were cause by land mines. Kim Jung-ho overcame his suffering and made a one happy family. However, poverty and hardship of life have made his wife leave him and his two daughters take their own lives. Now he is looking for people of his home town to testify the tragic accident that happen to him for a lawsuit against the government. Kim Gi-ho, a civilian mine removal expert is still removing land mines after retirement, despite the regulation forbids civilians to do so. He believes that removing this most inhumane weapon( land mine) could bring the Korean peninsula one step forward to unification, and this is the reason why he is still busy on search for land mines all over the country.

Director’ s statement: Many years have passed since the Korean war armistice, however, land mines are still lurking underground as a threat to people’ s daily lives. While at the Ottawa Convention( Mine-Ban treaty) , Korean government asserted that there are no other places besides the DMZ that land mines are layed, nonetheless, not a few civilian casualties occur every year in other regions. Moreover, the responsibility of the accidents are often passed on to the victims, thus insufficient compensations are made and even attempts to conceal the accident.

The government claims that land mine removal is related to military secrets, therefore cannot allow civilian land mine experts to take part. However, land mine problem is not restricted to one specific region or the victims but a problem that concerns everyone for the peace of the Korean peninsula.

Alyx Ayn Arumpac finished her studies at the Docnomads Master Course in Documentary Film (Universidade Lusofona, Academy of Drama and Film Budapest, and LUCA School of Arts Bruxelles) and the University of the Philippines. She was a fellow at the Berlinale Talents Docstation 2017 and Talents Tokyo 2015. She is based in Manila working as a television producer developing her first feature-length film.

Armi participated in Busan Asian Film Academy in 2008, Berlinale Talents and Talents Tokyo in 2014. She has participated in the La Fabrique des Cinema du Monde 2016 and Torino Film Lab 2017 for the project Whether the Weather is Fine. Synopsis: Evenings provide respite to tired old Manila. The heat subsides a little and darkness covers the grime and dirt. Traffic eases up. The city goes silent. But several times every night in some small back alley, the shadows unravel a body.

Pink and purple police lights illuminate walls, faces and corpses, as if a morbid disco dance. Wails from distraught mothers or wives fill the putrid air. The nation’ s leader has declared a bloody war against drugs. In the poor villages of the metropolis, local officials have started collecting names of suspected and known drug users and pushers. Masked killers come during the night to hunt, torture, and kill their targets. They kill anyone in the wrong place at the wrong time. Bodies are dumped in the same dark areas and those who escape are hunted down or replaced with their loved ones.

Director’ s statement: Aswang is a film about people whose fates are somehow entangled with each other during a season of state-sanctioned drug killings in Manila. Ruel, 12, is shot on the leg as he begs his father’ s killers to spare him a last breath. His father dies before his eyes. His mother Teresita, who is also a target, escapes during the night, leaving her four children behind. They eventually reunite and try to rebuild their lives in a shanty in the outskirts of the city. Glenda, a mother of eight, is widowed when vigilantes kill her husband in front of his entire family. She takes over her dead husband’ s bicycle rickshaw to feed her children. Months later, the killings in her neighborhood start again. Orly, a funeral parlor worker, starts feeling the burden of having to collect more and more bodies during the night.

Synopsis: Noryangjin Fishery Market is one of the largest seafood markets in Korea. In this place, we can easily find the traces of time. However, as Su-hyup, the present owner, took over the market to promote fishery industry in 2002, they started a greedy plan called ‘ modernizing project’ and this caused the unsettling conflict between Su-hyup and the merchants. Most of the merchants have already moved into the newly built building. Still, there are some remaining merchants who resist moving into the new one because of several reasons, such as architectural problems, expensive rent fee, opposition to the plan of building a resort complex at the old fishery market site and the affection for the place.

Director’ s statement: One of the main reasons why the merchants are refusing to move into the new market is because of the affection and memories of the old market. Just like people have memories, places also tell their own stories with their traces.

The documentary begins here. Dying Memories is a documentary trying to collect water images-symbolizing both life and death, memories about the market and all kinds of objects inside the market. With all of these elements mingling together, the fishery market makes it’ s own special atmosphere.

The documentary will also follow the merchants’ daily lives and try to tell the audience that the struggle with Su-hyup is not just to protect their livelihood but also to keep the history of their lives.

Synopsis: After the femicide in Gang-nam station on 17th of May, 2016, a new feminism generation, so called ‘ Young Young Femi’, made its appearance to fight against misogyny. Among them, there is a feminist activism group ‘ Flame, Femi, Action’ whose main issue is the female body and sexuality by focusing on the pro-choice movement, knowledge of sexuality, etc. As one action of its movement, five feminists decide to let their hair under the arm grow and shave their heads with the question: What makes women loose their power on even a hair, the most tiny element of the body? Now they do the action and what prejudice they will confront in their routine?

Director’ s statement: In Korea, a lot of women at the age of 19 go to the waxing shop with their mom to remove hair under their arm. The old-quote saying “ because you are woman” makes them decide to do something on their body or not to do. To fight against female body image oppression, there are five feminists acting up to their believes and trying to live an independent life. The members let their hair grow or cut and become a vegetarian as part of the action in their own routine. And those five stories redefine their own concept of feminism.

In 1985, Hasan was born in Iran and studied sociology at the university. Following his education, he worked as a social assistant for a NGO that fights with child labor in Iran and mainly with Afghan refugee kids, mainly to make video clips. He is now graduating from masters of Cinema from Tehran University.

Afsaneh Salari was born in Iran in 1988. She has a BA in film from Art University of Tehran and a master degree in Creative Directing from University of Paris 8. She has directed several short documentaries and currently directing and producing her first feature documentary.

The Forbidden Strings is her first production experience within Docmaniacs collective.works and makes changes in the city.

Synopsis: During the day, they are Afghan labours, doing what most Afghans do in Iran. During the night, they change cloths and become rock stars in a remote greenhouse, away from the eyes of Iranian police and their religious families.

Hakim, Akbar, Mohammad and Soori are among the second generation of Afghan refugees living in Iran since 1980’ s. Regardless of their hard lives, these young refugees have dared to dream: they want to go to Afghanistan and perform their first rock concert in Bamian festival, the only Art festival in Afghanistan. In order to reach Bamian festival, the protagonists have a last security issue. The Forbidden strings walks with the Arikains closely, as they move forward to celebrate the victory of art over war and violence.

Director’ s statement: After years of living in a discriminatory society, I’ ve learnt to divide my people into two groups: Those who follow their dreams and those who burry them. As an Afghan immigrant, if one is among the first group, he believes in miracles as well. The Arikains believed in miracle, they escaped from the Auschwitz of their destiny as Afghans and joined the Schindler list of their time, before burying their dreams. I am graduating from Masters of Cinema from university of Tehran while doing my first feature documentary related to my fatherland. I am making The Forbidden Strings for the rest of the immigrant society to realize that one is allowed to imagine and to dream.

Logline: In zoo, there are wild animals that should be kept inside a cage, and zookeepers, veterinarians who go in and out of the cages, and also visitors who look inside of the cang from the outside. Why do humans keep animals in cages? Are those iron bars for the protection of the ones outside or inside?

공대를 졸업하고 영상디자인 일을 했다. 베를린에서

1980년대 말 민족영화연구소, 한겨레영화제작소에서

음악학을 공부하다 말고 쾰른에서 영화를 전공했다.

다큐멘터리를 연출, 제작, 보급했으며 90년대 이후 극영화

졸업작품으로 극영화를 촬영하고 다큐멘터리를 연출하였다.

프로듀서로 활동하기도 했다. 현재 영화사 ‘생의 한가운데’

촬영을 업으로 삼고 있으며 돈 안 되는 많은 다른 일도 하고

대표로서 다큐멘터리 공동제작, 대안적 배급의 방안에 대해

있다. <동물, 원>은 첫 장편 연출작이다.

Wang Min-cheol worked in the field of visual design after graduating college of engineering. He studied musicology in Berlin but soon quit and went to Cologne to major in film studies. He filmed a movie and directed a documentary film for his graduation work.

Film making is what he does for living along with many other things that are not quite helpful in making money. Garden, Zoological is his first full-length film.

In the late 80’s Lee Soo-jung directed, produced and distributed documentary films at the Institute of Korean Film Studies and Hankyoreh Movie Studio, and after 90’s she worked as a movie producer. Currently, as the representative of a film production company ‘In the Middle of a Life’ she is seeking ways for joint production of documentary films and alternative distribution.

Synopsis: Autumn, a leopard cats artificial insemination procedure is being done, the veterinarian who endured 2 years of experiments and research without any outcome seems fatigued. Winter, the zoo is temporarily closed due to a widespread of avian flue. The veterinarian collects bird feces to examine avian flu infection. Because it’ s a remote place, there aren’ t many people or migratory birds visiting, therefore chances of infection are low, however, that doesn’ t relieve worries. A true seal couple conceives a baby. The zookeeper is feeling tense reminding an incident that a just born baby seal died 2 years ago. The baby seal couldn’ t come out of the water and drowned due to the water tanks structural problem. Late winter, the baby seal is born healthy. Zoo staffs take turn siting beside the water tank and look after the baby seal. Spring, the zoo reopens. Visitors revisit and the animals become spectacles once again.

Director’ s statement: Garden, Zoological endeavors to illustrate realistic dilemma of animal rights in the observers point of view. In a zoo animal rights vary in many different forms.

There are animals that can no longer return to wildlife, rats delivered as food for other animals, processed cows, pigs, chickens that are now even difficult to imagine that it was once a life form. Morality doesn’ t discriminate species, however. In reality, animal rights don’ t apply the same to natural monument redcrowned cranes and chickens in a poultry farm. When animal rights by means of philosophy, is applied to reality, it comes in various forms an meanings. Garden, Zoological aims to show all the different layers instead of summing-up. In the process of doing so we could ask ourselves some meaningful questions. For example, why is the zoo sad?

Logline: This is the story of men who emerged from the crucible of confrontation in the Java heartland to become accidental leaders in a fight to protect their way of life. It depicts an agrarian society proud and prosperous while their profession is increasingly scorned, telling how they came together to protect not just their own lands and families, but one another.

Yudha was born in Blitar, East Java, on 9 July 1983. He has worked as camera person on documentary film Musafir (2008) and Denok and Gareng (2012). Today he sits on the board of Festival Film Dokumenter, a documentary film festival based in Jogjakarta, and freelances as a camera person and director.

Since 2002, He has worked for and learnt documentary film. His works as an editor got a Jury Award in the Jakarta International Film Festival(JIFFEST) in 2004 for a film entitled I Think It is Difficult to Forget,.. Difficult to Forget. He also produced On the Origin of Fear (2016), Tida Lupa (2015), Tarung (2015).

Synopsis: Despite their vital contribution to food security, Indonesian farmers frequently find themselves face-to-face with existential threats. Their farms can be grabbed in the name of development, while the fertilizer they need is often sold at unaffordable prices. The market is dominated by middlemen who manipulate prices in their favor. Widodo is a proud farmer from the south of Java. It was his generation that found a way to convert barren sands along the coast into fertile farmland. Since 2006, he has led a community fight to protect these lands from a mining company that seeks to dig a quarry and build a factory. But that is not the only battle. Widodo also strives to create conditions where farmers can prosper, hand-in-hand, with the lands they call home. This film depicts a struggle against these many forces, and of the determination to protect an agrarian way of life.

Director’ s statement: Agrarian conflict is the dark underbelly of Indonesia’ s rise into the ranks of the G20 economies. That rise was driven chiefly by natural resource exploitation-the explosion of plantations, quarries and aquaculture across the archipelago-which, because of the need for huge quantities of land, put thousands of communities suddenly into the crosshairs, targeted by powerful corporations who saw profit in their soil. This is the story of one community that has decided to take a stand.

Having done her Masters from the Dept. of Film Studies in Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Sreemoyee has been keenly interested in the cinema of Iran. She participated in Docedge 2017 with her first film project Toward Happy Alleys and also been invited to participate in Sheffield Doc Fest, 2017.

A graduate of SRFTI and alumnus of Berlin Talent Campus 2010, Sankha has been a prolific editor with particular interest in documentaries. Films edited by him are awarded and screened in major international festivals including Berlin, IDFA, etc.

Synopsis: The story of the film runs on the single most important theme of freedom and how its different characters interpret the idea of freedom, desiring it in their own individualistic ways. The narrative would interweave the lives of three main individuals–Jafar Panahi, Mohammad Shirvani and a regular citizen–in the city of Tehran whose struggle to express is marked by the choices they make in their lives. Jafar Panahi, one of the most famous Iranian filmmakers in the world is forbidden to make films. Mohammad Shirvani, an experimental filmmaker, is frustrated with the limitations that the state imposes on depiction of sexuality and the body. Majdy, a secular Muslim teacher has lost all chances of securing a job in Iran. The only way for him to survive is to leave the country, to greener, freer lands. He tries hard for eight years, but getting a visa is not so easy.

Director's statement: After the formation of the Islamic Republic in 1979, many stringent measures were introduced by the government to control the liberal, western inclined Persians. Veiling had become mandatory, and soon Tehran had become a city that could only be imagined by the colour Black. The dominant image in the streets, buses, metros or the bazaars of Iran was the black bodies of chador clad women with only their faces showing. This of course did not mean Iranian women were not aware of their sexuality, or could not figure a way of expressing themselves despite the imposed hijab. As is the case with most repressive societies-expression finds a way out, through leaks and accidents. The film will not be talking about a political history of oppression in Iran, but how ordinary people—men, women, and artists find their own ways of stealing freedom from within the cages imposed on them.

Asian Docs Co-production Network Project which featured its first production ‘I’m Asian’ last year will be launching the 2nd project this year. 5 schools from 4 countries including Korean National University of Arts, Young In University, Japan Institute of Moving Image, Tainan National University of Arts, Yunnan Arts University, China will be participating and producing 5 omnibus documentaries. This project which is based on the theme of ‘Trans-history and Asia’, will last two years with workshops in Korea and Taiwan and will be screened in the 10th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival in September 2018 after having rough-cut screening at TIDF in May next year. During the 9th DMZ Docs Film festival, a workshop will be held in four days with a public presentation as a final event.

잘 모르겠지만 , 한 번도 중국인으로서의 지난 삶에 대해 내게 이야기해주시지 않았다 . 내 할머니도 마찬가지였다 . 이 다큐멘터리를 촬영하려고 준비를 시작하기도 전에 할머니는 치매에 걸리셨고 과거의 기억들을 더 이상 이야기해주실 수 없으셨다 . 내가 범접할 수 없었던 내 아버지와 할머니의 시대는 과거 요코하마의 중국인들이 분열됐던 바로 그 시기이다 . ‘ 중국인 재일교포로서 그들은 어떤 삶을 살아왔을까 ’ 라는 궁금증에 빠져있던 나는 할머니를 대신해 내게 과거에 대해 들려줄 수 있는 사람을 찾던 중 페이씨를 만났다 . 그리고 거기서부터 이 다큐멘터리는 시작된다 .

Synopsis: Director Hayashi is Japan born 4th generation of Chinese, who is not able to handle Chinese language. He knows the past conflict and movement in Yokohama China Town by meeting Fei Long-lu, a ex-teacher at the Chinese School standing for the Mainland. Director films Long-lu, who has experienced the Incident of Yokohama Overseas Chinese School intervened by the Taiwan government causing the dividing Yokohama Chinese and his separation from classmates as a child, led the political movement for China-Japan friendship against Taiwanese Power, and other concerned Chinese resident to the time and other generations, while Yokohama Taiwanese says “ they just LEFT”, The film reveals the hidden history of Yokohama China Town and how they look back and face the past.

Director’ s statement: I’ m the fourth generation of Chinese immigrant. There is the blank era in my life from 1950’ s, when my father was born, to the time of my birth. I don’ t know if he avoided it or not but he never told me his past life as Chinese. So my grandma was. Before setting out of making this film, she’ d fell into dementia and unable to open drawers of her memories. The untouchable era of my father and grandma is right in the same era when Yokohama Chinese was divided. How they had been leading their lives as Chinese in Japan. I’ d been seeking for the substitute as my grandma then I met Mr. Fei. This is the beginning of this film.

기획의도: 처음에는 에밀리라는 소녀가 다큐멘터리의 주인공이었다 . 그녀는 제주도에 살면서 평화운동에 참여하고 있었다 . 그러나 첫 해외촬영이자 평화로운 여행을 하고 있던 나에게 에밀리는 카메라를 너무 빨리 들지 않았으면 좋겠다고 말했다 . 그녀는 내가 여행에 더 몰입했으면 좋겠다고 했다 . 그래서 나는 휴대폰과 카메라를 사용해 많은 여행 이미지와 슬라이스 이미지를 촬영해 모으는 것으로 촬영 계획을 변경했다 . 타이완으로 돌아온 나는 촬영 방향을 어떻게 바꿀 것인지에 대해 고민했고 마침내 내 아버지와 나 , 제주도 , 그리고 금문도를 한데 묶어 하나의 다이얼로그로 만들기로 결정했다 . 다이얼로그를 통해 민주주의 , 젠더 , 전쟁 , 독립 , 그리고 다른 세대 간의 소통을 포함한 다양한 면을 다루면서 타이완의 현재 상황과 한국의 평화운동에 대해 알리고자 한다 . 이 다큐멘터리 영화는 자각을 반영하기 위해 그리고 트래블로그를 영화자막에 쓰기 위해 슬라이스 형식의 여행기록물과 홈 비디오 형식을 활용한다 .

Synopsis: My father was born in Kinmen, in 1958 when 823 artillery, which the Chinese Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China occurred across the war. He often told the tourists in the memory of the war. I was born in 1987, the time when ROC Government declared martial law in Taiwan. I had no interest of the war as a young one who grown up in the democratic generation, until 2017 I traveled to Jeju Island, and began to re-know my father and Kinmen Island.

Director’ s statement: At first, the main character of the film is Emily, she lives in Jeju Island and participates in the issue of peace movement. But when the first oversea shooting, when participating in a peaceful trip, Emily wants me not to pick up the camera too quickly, instead, should be more involved in the journey. So I changed my shooting plan, using my mobile phones and cameras to record, collecting many tourism image and slice image. After I back to Taiwan, I consider how to change the shooting plan, and finally decided to put my father and me, Jeju Island and Kinmen Island in the story of the spindle to become a dialogue. The dialogue has many faces, including democracy, gender, war, independence and other generations of communication, to reveal the current situation in Taiwan and the Korean peace movement. So the image style will like slice-type travel record image and home video, in order to reflect the awakening and write a travel log into a movie text.

Synopsis: In 1949, The People’ s Republic of China was founded; The Kuomintang government was forced to evacuate to Taiwan, two sides of the Taiwan Straits isolated from then. The Kuomintang army, which stationed in Yunnan(雲南) unable to cope with in time, to retain the strength, they choose retreat into Burma. This ‘ Alone army in the foreign country’ fight as a guerrilla in the Sino-Burmese border for 11 years, counter-attack to Yunnan for several times, but eventually retreat because out of ammunition and strength disparity. In 1961, under international public opinion pressure, The Kuomintang government withdraws this army, and separately placed in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, etc. This batch of veterans started their new life in the ‘ new home’ in Taiwan.

Based the oral history of these families and also the history archive images, this project focus on the everyday life of the second and third generations of Qing Jing farming residence(境農場) as well as their connection with their hometown in Yunnan mainland China.

Director’ s statement: This film project is about fate, memory, dreams and human conditions.

How marginal immigrants survive in a complicated cold war and political circumstances since 1950’ s.

One of main protagonists Kai Rao is 91 years old first generation of immigrated former soldier whom born in Yunnan. He was recruited into the army in the 36th year of the republic of China. He married to a “ Yi” people in Myanmar. He is one of the few remaining of the first generation Haocai Zhu: an overseas Chinese, whose parents emigrated from Guangdong to Yangon, Myanmar. She was married to the kuomintang military officer.

Wenyin Lu is the second generation of Qingjing, and is now the owner of Mama Lu Yunnan Restaurant , who often returns to Yunnan hometown. Gui-lan Yang: second generation of the Qingjing and was married to a local native.

Rumi: She is the third generation of the Qingjing, daughter of Wenyin Lu. We intend to structure this documentary film via a multi-channel & multiperspective narrative, which means experimental essay film.

Synopsis: Professor Gwiok Kim has been researching on peace in terms of gender, and in 2002 she publishes a thesis that claims there was a comfort women for Korean military. Later, a few Korean and japanese press reported about it, but it was soon forgotten. Maybe this is because there weren’ t any people who came forward and testified like Haksun Kim, a former Japanese military comfort women. As time passes, materials kept in the Ministry of National Defence became unaccessible. Media kept silence as if it had been promised, and while this issue was forgotten in Korea, Japanese Net Right reproached Korea saying “ You Koreans also had comfort women for your own military” based on professor Kim’ s thesis, followed by Japanese government avoiding their responsibility of Japanese military comfort women. In 2014 professor Kim published another thesis related to Korean military comfort women. She believes that the truth she discovered would rather be a solution in solving the Japanese military comfort women problem. It has been already 20 years since she listened to the testimonies of the truth.

Director’ s statement: Images of the Korean War we had been consuming so far were mostly about ideological conflict, evacuation, symbol of division, separated families etc. In a time of distorted modern history, many truth were covered up. One of them is the Korean military comfort women. In World War 2, the history of comfort women had begun by Japanese imperialism throughout the entire Asia and persisted after the end of the war and even after the independence of Korea. If we look at the Korean military comfort women’ s operating process it is in alignment with the Japanese military comfort women. Thorough history, war had been considered an exclusive property of males and in that war women were treated as instruments to increase morale of soldiers. Today, we speak in our own voices to stop the redundant historical tragedy.

중이다. 두 편의 단편 다큐멘터리를 연출하고, 현재는 여성이

통해 삶을 배운다. 폭력에 무뎌지지 않는 삶을 살고자 한다.

역사에서 어떻게 변화를 만들어 내는지에 관한 영화를

여성의 삶, 그리고 동물과 함께 공존하는 삶에 대한 이야기를

A strong feminist and a fesco vegetarian. She has been living with two cats and learning her life from them. She wants to live a life where she is aware of violence happening and wants it to stop. Futhermore, she hopes to make the films about a life of a woman and living with animals.

She is a documentary director and studies filming at Yong In University.

She produced two short stories, and now She is making movies about how women made changes in history. She will continue to preach documentaries and talk to many people and tell them the story.

Synopsis: In 2017, a 20 years old korean girl Da-hee got in touch with on-line feminism and this changed her perspective on the world ever since. Da-hee was suffocating in a world of patriarchy and she felt courage and freedom through feminism, but on the other hand she kept feeling confused. While suffering from misogyny in her everyday life which was prevalent in Korean society, Da-hee determines so called ‘ Tal-Chosun’ and looks for friends who tried it first. In meeting with many friends, she realized that Asian feminism was somewhat different from western feminism, and began to contemplate on her identity as feminist. What kind of feminist would she become, and would she succeed in ‘ Tal-Chosun’ ?

Director’ s statement: We would like to make a story in women’ s point of view. Furthermore, with ‘ history’ as subject in hand, we hope to film the documentary in a concept of making a new history, not tracing the past. Thus, we decided to make a record of contemporary women. Today, on-line feminism movement is a big issue in Korea and this phenomenon is not restricted to Korea but all over Asia. This phenomenon may just be a happening that brings no interest to some people, but in terms of women’ s history this could be a critical point. 2017 today, many young feminists in Asia are contemplating on feminism and their identity as Asian. There is a clear difference between western feminism and Asian feminism, and many women discuss about survival as Asian feminist. This documentary film intends to talk about a value of an individual’ s story having historical meaning and record the year 2017 of Asian women through an ordinary individual named Dahee who is in search of her identity as Asian feminist.

The Public Presentation of DMZ Docs Fund ‘DMZ Docs Fund’ aiming to set up a favorable environment to create documentaries continuously in Asia and Korea, will

award 360 million Korean won to documentary projects finally selected in four categories, ‘Fund for Production’, ‘Fund for Release and Distribution’, ‘Asian Docs Co-production Network Project’ and ‘Daemyung Culture Wave Award’ this year. ‘Fund for Production’ consists of three parts, ‘Featurelength Documentary’, ‘DMZ Documentary Project’, and ‘New Directors Documentary Project’, and will announce the selected projects, especially, after giving to public the presentation of 21 documentary projects from Korea and Asia that passed the preliminary examination. Asian Docs Co-production Network Project Workshop which featured its first production I’m Asian last year will be launching a 2nd project this year. 5 schools from 4 countries including Japan Institute of Moving Image, Tainan National University of Arts, China Yunnan Arts University, Korean National University of Arts, Yong In University will be participating and producing 5 omnibus documentaries with 20 million won support. During the Film festival a workshop will be held for three nights and four days and a public presentation event for the projects will also take place.

The Way towards an Asia’s Peace Citizen We have a time to look how the peace of Asia and my life are connected through an individual’s life, to find out what we could do as ‘peace citizens’ in Asia. Why does Asia have the nations, but not ‘the citizens’? Why are there the ambassadors defending the interests of their countries, but not ‘Asia’’s ambassadors without borders speaking out justice and peace in Asia? It will be a chance to think about these questions together and share the opinions regarding those.
