THE SERIES

WELCOME W elcome to the 2018 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, a 12-round tour across America’s best motocross tracks featuring the most competitive, talented, and capable cast of riders in the world. Expect an exciting weekend at the racetrack as you witness the top riders and teams in motorcycling, all adding up to an experience unlike any other. As you traverse the facility, sponsor village, paddock, and racetrack, you’ll see this championship celebrating motocross at its modern-day best, with the latest equipment and technology and highly upgraded experiences for the fans. On the other hand, this series prides itself on commemorating the sport’s history. Although it’s relatively young on the spectrum of professional sports, motocross is a pioneering action sport and is reaching milestones like our opening round at the Hangtown Motocross Classic hosting its 50th Annual AMA National this season. At its core, motocross remains what it was then: a sport that requires a balance of talent and toughness. The experience trickles from the racetrack to the fence line, as thousands of fans each weekend make their annual road trip with friends and family to their favorite National track to watch the races and soak up what Mother Nature has to offer. Motocross may never shed its outlaw and limit-pushing appeal, but it has evolved; the riders must be in world-class athletic form to have a chance at a moto win, let alone a championship. If you can’t make every race, that’s okay: motocross continues to innovate off the track also. Races are now watched on televisions, tablets, and phones in hundreds of thousands of homes—and other summer weekend hot spots—across the world. Along with every moto of the 2018 season being available across NBC, NBC Sports Network, and MAVTV, the NBC Sports Gold Pro Motocross Pass returns to offer live, nonstop streams of the entire championship without commercial interruption. This includes

qualifiers, full motos, highlights, replays of 2018 races, and archived races from 2016 and 2017. Fans can also follow the series with a close-up view on Instagram and Twitter (@promotocross) and our Pro Motocross Facebook page. This year’s title chase begins with the oldest event on the circuit—Sacramento, California’s Hangtown Motocross Classic hosting its golden anniversary—and concludes in August at the newest facility on the tour, Crawfordsville, Indiana’s Ironman Raceway. In between those races are the pillars of American motocross, including Buchanan, Michigan’s RedBud National; New Berlin, New York’s Unadilla MX; Washougal MX Park in Washington; and more. Every facility that hosts a round of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross also features youth and amateur racing programs, helping to grow the sport and prepare future stars. Each race’s promoters and staff take great pride in their AMA National event and consider themselves first and foremost stewards of motorcycle racing, working to add a little more to the sport every year. Along with our partners at NBC Sports and AMA Pro Racing and all of the event promoters, MX Sports Pro Racing works year-round to improve this championship with racetrack and facility upgrades, expanded television and online coverage, and greater opportunities for our athletes and the motorcycle industry—not to mention a memorable fan experience at every stop. With valued series partners like Lucas Oil, Red Bull, Western Powersports, Fly Racing, GEICO Motorcycle, MotoSport.com, Garmin, FMF, KTM, Pirelli, Suzuki, and more, Lucas Oil Pro Motocross has stronger support than at any time in its history. MX Sports Pro Racing, NBC Sports, and all of our partners would like to welcome you to the 2018 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. We hope you have a fun, safe afternoon, and we thank you for coming out to the races.

What is the difference between a National and the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship? The word National refers to a single event. Lucas Oil Pro Motocross refers to a group of Nationals (12 in all) held across the United States. determine gate pick—a vital component of a good start. The fastest lap time from practice gets first gate pick, second-fastest gets second pick, and so on. Loading order for the second moto is determined by the first moto’s results.

THE PHYSICAL DEMANDS Why do the riders seem so exhausted after a race? Doesn’t the engine do all the work? The engines are extremely powerful—just holding on to the bike can be tiring—but they only move the bike forward. Riders constantly make rapid corrections and line changes, all while rushing forward on a racing surface that is extremely rough and choppy. Riders shift from sitting to standing throughout a lap; add frequent triple-digit heat and stifling humidity, and you’ve got a physical challenge that only the fittest athletes can endure.

Motocross is considered one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. Professional racers reach 94–96% of their maximum heart rate each moto.

BREAKING DOWN

THE FLAGS

GREEN The green flag signifies the start of the race or timed qualifying session. YELLOW A yellow flag on the track means there is danger ahead. Riders should exercise caution when a yellow flag is displayed. Passing and jumping are allowed when the yellow flag is displayed. BLUE WITH YELLOW STRIPE This lets riders know they are about to be passed by the leaders. The blue flag is placed throughout the racetrack as a courtesy to the riders. Riders who are being passed by the leaders need to hold their current line and not impede the leaders. Once the leaders have passed, the rider may continue to race, but not race with the leaders. WHITE WITH RED MARKINGS The “Wheels on the Ground Flag” is displayed at blind jumps or other dangerous areas on the track. It indicates

18

PROMOTOCROSS.COM | #THISISMOTO | #REALRACING | #PROMOTOCROSS

that no jumping or passing is allowed until the rider has safely passed the area of concern. Should a rider jump or pass another competitor in this section, they will be penalized. BLACK A rider receiving the black flag must pull off the racetrack and see the race director or designee to find out what the problem is. The race director will determine whether the rider can continue in that race or timed qualifying session. RED The race or timed qualifying session has been stopped, and riders must report back to the staging area to await further instruction. WHITE One lap remains in the race. CHECKERED The race or timed qualifying session is over. Riders will leave the racetrack at the designated track exit.

HISTORY LESSON Has motocross always been big in America? Europeans dominated the sport’s early days, and Europe’s Grand Prix series hosted the world’s top talent. In 1982, “Bad” Brad Lackey became the first American World Motocross Champion when he clinched the 500cc Grand Prix Championship. Fellow American Danny LaPorte backed up Lackey’s success two weeks later, taking the 250cc GP Championship. The monumental victories shifted the global balance of power; since then, Lucas Oil Pro Motocross has been the center of the sport’s universe. The best racers now view America as the ultimate motocross proving ground.

OFF-CAMBER TURN A turn that is banked in the opposite direction—for example, a righthand turn on a surface that slants to the left. It’s easy to lose traction here, making these turns more difficult to navigate quickly.

WHISKEY THROTTLE When a rider accidentally applies too much throttle, usually due to fatigue or an unseen obstacle. The result is normally a bike that jumps forward and lifts the front unpredictably.

ENDO

GETTING THE DIGITS

A crash in which a bike tumbles forward end-over-end.

How are race numbers assigned? The number you see on a racer’s motorcycle is based on the previous year’s performance. The champion always wears #1, and numbers 10 to 99 are assigned according to combined motocross and supercross points in the previous season. A lower number signifies more points earned, with three-digit numbers reserved either for newcomers or riders who did not score enough points to be ranked within the nation’s top 99.

Of course, there are excep-

tions. Past champions are allowed (but not required) to pick a single-digit number, provided nobody else has claimed it. Riders in the previous year’s top ten can choose any twodigit number as a permanent number, as long as it’s available. To retain their chosen numbers, riders must earn at least 25 points per year.

BREAKING DOWN

THE NUMBER PLATES

1 1 1

The difference is not always black-andwhite, but Lucas Oil Pro Motocross competitors can be divided into two groups: self-supported (privateers) and factory-supported. Factory riders are the upper echelon, earn salaries, and are provided with bikes, transportation, a mechanic, and most other necessities. Since semis are usually only financially accessible to factory efforts (and a few well-funded privateer teams), these riders are typically the only ones who enjoy this luxury.

corner, or just for fun. Racers pitted out of vans, pickup trucks, and trailers are usually striving to earn a factory position. They likely have smaller sponsorships in the form of gear, parts, and/or discounts but usually bear the large financial burden of racing (travel, bike maintenance, etc.) themselves.

PROMOTOCROSS.COM | #THISISMOTO | #REALRACING | #PROMOTOCROSS

SCRUB A scrub is an advanced form of a whip that allows riders to stay low over jumps and maintain higher speeds. It’s extremely impressive when done properly, but it can be risky. Some riders can clear long jumps with their bike completely flat and just inches above the ground.

WELCOME TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS! The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is the real thing, with big racing on big racetracks. Moto is pure, authentic, and raw, with more racing and more fun. Our fans are rabid, and so is the action. Our athletes are warriors and our racetracks their battlefields. This is moto!

Moto is the original extreme sport. For over 51 years, our national racetracks have hosted the world’s greatest athletes in front of the nation’s greatest fans. Moto is steeped in tradition, and for many fans, a day at the races is a rite of passage. Here, we celebrate the hard work and the dirty work. Rise, grind, rinse, repeat. More than a race, motocross is an adventure. Experience this true American Championship this summer at American’s finest racetracks. Prepare now for your Moto-Adventure!

PROMOTOCROSS.COM | #THISISMOTO | #REALRACING | #PROMOTOCROSS

NO WHINING

The on-track action runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with main motos at 1:00 p.m. These are long, action-packed days with tons to see and do, so pace yourself. And just like the racers, you need to be prepared to beat the heat. It’s summer, which means it’s hot and you’re going to sweat. Drink plenty of fluids, wear a hat (especially if you look good in one), and find yourself some shade throughout the day. When the checkered flag falls, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you survived one of the greatest experiences in motorsports.

BE RACE-READY

PROTECT YOUR EYES

Moto is an outdoor, get-back-to-nature, inyour-face fan experience, rain or shine. The sun can burn your back or the rain can soak your clothes, but your spirit won’t be dampened. Either way, be prepared, because moto fans are not scared of a little rain. In fact, some of the most exciting, iconic battles in moto history were fought in the rain. So bring it on! Pack your sunscreen, throw in a poncho and an umbrella (just in case), and head to the track.

People-watching is a spectator sport, too, and you will be amazed at what you will see at the races. We can guarantee that 100%. Bring your sunglasses—not only do they protect your eyes from dangerous rays, but they make you look really cool.

FAMILY FUN Motocross is a family sport, and kids of all ages are always welcome. But remember, moto has twice as many bikes on the track as indoor racing, which means twice the engine roar. You may want to bring some ear protection and shading for small kids and pack a lunch or snacks that they will want. Feel free to bring your own food and drinks—including adult beverages (but please, no glass containers). Or visit our many food vendors; racetrack cuisine is a unique experience all its own.

BE SWEET TO YOUR FEET At moto, our fans are on the move. Our tracks are real motocross, with big obstacles and spectacular jumps. We want you to see them all, so wear sensible shoes so you can comfortably experience the race action from any vantage point along the fence line. Roam from point to point or park your butt in one spot for the day. Either way, leave the dress shoes and high heels at home.

MX MATTERS

ROAD TRIP By its very nature, moto is held at racetracks in mostly rural communities, which means most fans will have to travel a bit to get there. What a great reason for a summer road trip! Leave early so you can get to the track in plenty of time to park and make your way to the gate before the race action starts. Once you get there, scout all the various spectating points, stake out your territory, and visit the vendors in Sponsor Village. If you’re lucky enough to get a Pit Pass (or if you have $20 to buy one), you may even get a rider autograph. While autographs are not guaranteed, every top rider signs autographs in their pits on Saturday morning. Check the posted autograph times at your favorite rider’s pit.

GET CLOSE Few sports let you get as close to the action as moto, so you can see, feel, hear and even smell the action. Sometimes it feels like the riders are jumping right over your head! And the sights don’t stop when the racing ends—head toward the podium at the end of the day and wash off the roost with a champagne shower from the race winners.

PERSONAL BUSINESS These can be long days. Sooner or later, nature will call. While most tracks have flushing-toilet trailers, you can expect to find port-a-johns throughout the facility. Remember, bladder damage is real, but not the monsters below. Don’t be afraid to let the kids off the bus.

30

PROMOTOCROSS.COM | #THISISMOTO | #REALRACING | #PROMOTOCROSS

CODE OF CONDUCT Enjoy yourself, but remember you share the day with other people, including kids. Don’t be a jackass. While we encourage you to root (loudly) for your favorite riders, show respect for all riders and fans.

CASH IS KING Credit cards are welcome for gate admission to all racetracks and at most novelty/souvenir shops, but not all food vendors, so bring a little cash just in case you really have to have that giant kielbasa or elephant ear.

NO EXCUSES The Pro Motocross experience is what you make of it. There are no excuses for not having a great time.

FOLLOW THE ACTION ALL SEASON LONG AT

BRAGGING

RIGHTS

Your day is not complete until you share your experience on social media. Remember, you’re at a great race while your other friends are sitting on a couch somewhere being lame. Carpe diem! Show them what a great time you’re having.

THE R ACETR ACKS OF LUCAS OIL PRO MOTOCROSS

T

he Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is a rare mash-up of athleticism and engineering, a test of men and machines no other sport can match. Is motocross about the heart, will, fitness, daring, and skill of the athlete? Yes. Is it about the teamwork and technology needed to build the best possible motorcycle? Yes. All 12 rounds of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, put the riders and teams to such a test. Each race requires success in every aspect, but each race is also totally unique. Through 12 rounds, the series winds its way across the United States to visit the tracks that fans and riders have come to love.

70

Racing conditions will vary drastically from track to track. Massive jumps? Think Hangtown, High Point, Tennessee, Unadilla, and RedBud. Deep ruts? Spring Creek, Thunder Valley, and Budds Creek have them. Sand? The Wick 338 is nothing but. Elevation changes? Look to Washougal, Glen Helen, and the series-closing Ironman. Some tracks feature soft dirt and rolling bumps; some feature harder surfaces and sharper edges. Plus, summertime weather guarantees change—bright and sunny one moment, with rain and mud always a possibility at another. The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Champion will be the rider who can thrive in all of these conditions. Here’s a closer look at each venue for this year’s series.

angtown says “Motocross Starts Here,” and that’s true for several reasons. The track is the traditional opener for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship each year, but it also reaches deep into the history books as one of the oldest continuing events in American dirt bike racing. Hangtown was already well established when the Nationals began, first at the old track in nearby Plymouth, and then later moving to today’s modern facility inside the Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area. Hangtown is the only track on the circuit run inside a real state park—you’ll notice off-road trails stretching for miles into the distance as well as park rang-

74

ers patrolling the facility. The track also features great sightlines, as riders cross up and down the hillside in front of the fans. You can see nearly 100 percent of the track from any vantage point. The track here is beautiful and perfect when the day begins—high noon at Hangtown—and the opening ceremonies feel like a part of history, laced with bits of Americana and the Old West. As soon as the gate drops and the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship begins, though, it all changes in an instant. The pageantry quickly cedes to reality: rough, nasty, square-edged motocross chop, deep ruts, heavy roost, steep climbs, and high-speed descents. Only the toughest will come out of Hangtown with their title hopes alive.

outhern California doesn’t just have a place in motocross—it is the place for motocross. Three huge factors led to California becoming the epicenter of the dirt bike industry. First, the West Coast serves as a closer base and shipping quarters for the Japanese brands that dominated the sport for decades. Second, the weather makes riding a year-round activity. Third, Southern California’s endless deserts made the state a natural playground for off-road vehicles. Population growth and sprawl has taken away some of that space—and some of the iconic motocross tracks of the past—but SoCal still loves its dirt bikes. With Glen Helen Raceway serving as the annual SoCal stop in Lucas Oil Pro Motocross, there’s pressure to make a big

statement at the center of the motocross universe—and the races here deliver. Big statement? Everything is big at Glen Helen! This is supersized motocross. The start straightaway is as long and fast as anything you’ll see, the Talladega first turn is the widest and steepest in the sport, and the up- and downhills are so huge that they’re practically mountains. Glen Helen packs in some big jumps too. Glen Helen provides many examples of how far the sport has evolved. Few machines could even make it to the top of these hills at all—but 40 motocross bikes can race to the top and back down, repeatedly, all day long. Today’s riders and bikes can do incredible things. On this massive playground, fans can see the upper limits of motorsports and athletic competition at its finest.

olorado’s Thunder Valley National has quietly worked its way into the fabric of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. While other tracks stretch deep into the series’ 1970s roots, today’s Thunder Valley track only joined the circuit in 2005. It quickly established itself as a worthy addition to this storied series, and now many identify it as a favorite stop. Thunder Valley is a great all-arounder. It looks cool, it’s situated in a great spot (the famous Red Rocks concert venue is just on the other side of the mountain, and downtown Denver is only 30 minutes away), and the track always

offers amazing racing. The layout’s sweeping turns and deep ruts make line selection critical—on one lap, a rider can grab the right rut, make several passes, and take the lead, but the next lap that rut could become impassibly deep and he might give all of those positions right back! With the track situated at about 6,000 feet above sea level, elevation can wreak havoc on bikes and bodies. More recently, though, teams have figured out the right engine tweaks to cope with thin air, and riders actually enjoy the chance to flex their cardiovascular muscles. This leads to fantastic heads-up racing as good as any in Lucas Oil Pro Motocross.

makes for a second-to-none atmosphere. Even if it rains, the fans will just keep on screaming for their heroes—in fact, some of High Point’s peaks have come in the nastiest of conditions. Just ask anyone lining the fence—they’d love to share some memories. Driving in to High Point provides a distinctly old-school feel, with a narrow, twisting country road suddenly dissipating into a beautiful motocross track and massive pits and campground. The track has evolved, too, with new, modern jumps built right in front of the spectator sections. A series of facelifts have left the track with a newer look but have retained the old-school High Point feel. Expect many more great memories this year.

uddy Creek Raceway joined the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship in 2013, but by then it was long established as one of America’s premier spots for grassroots racing. Even the drive into the facility can help explain that, as the entrance road is lined with billboards naming past track champions in the legendary Southeastern moto championship series. Many of those riders have since turned pro and now contend for podiums weekly at the Nationals. The Southeast’s best talent has arrived on the big stage, and so has the venue they grew to love. Muddy Creek is a tight track with several sharp corners that set up ag-

gressive passes. Riders can make up ground through the air, too, with some big leaps in front of the spectator areas and the massive uphill triple named the Bomber. Clearing these jumps is not a given—soil conditions change throughout the day, and those variations can turn an easy leap into something very challenging. Success here requires constant scanning for new lines and fresh dirt—something the locals know how to do better than most. The track keeps churning out more talent, too, with the amateur camping area in view just over the ridge at the top of the track. Muddy Creek has its big National now, but hasn’t lost sight of the family-friendly feel that put it on the map.

o track exhibits the variety of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross like The Wick 338 in Southwick, Massachusetts. This famous sandbox offers a look, feel, sound, and often even results unlike any other in the series. It’s the sand that makes all the difference. Not only is Southwick the only full sand track in the series, it’s also unique to all other sand tracks around the world. Southwick’s sand is uniquely slippery in spots, with a deceivingly hard base. The lines form up differently than at other sand tracks. The only real way to master Southwick is through countless laps—and that’s where the locals come in to play the

spoilers. Southwick hosts tons of regional races, and that breeds a local advantage stronger than at any other track. The history of the Southwick National is littered with New England privateers running with, and beating, the factory guys. The local fans are ready for such lightning to strike, too, and they’ll be hanging over the fences and going crazy if it happens. The usual favorites in the championship will have to endure Southwick’s sand if they want the #1 plate. The track pushes bikes and bodies to the brink and ensures that only the toughest will survive. It’s a unique challenge filled with heartbreak and heroes—and plenty of witnesses to it all.

o you love motocross? Do you love America? Do you love people who love motocross and America? If you do, you haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the full RedBuuuuud! experience. RedBud is the central stop of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship in scheduling, geography, and overall vibe. Motocross does the July Fourth holiday right, rocking with great racing, an amazing track, and the heartiest gang of motocross fans you’ll see anywhere. The fun rages all weekend, culminating with an absolutely bonkers podium celebration with fans piled up a hundred deep at the fence. Forget the guy standing in the center of the podium—everyone is a

Off in the corner of the property sits a nearly limitless supply of sand, and hundreds of truckloads have been mixed into the soil to create a surface that’s super rough but delivers maximum traction. It also allows new obstacles to be shaped and sorted each year, headlined by one of the most famous jumps in all of motocross, LaRocco’s Leap—which is of course set right next to big grandstands filled with motocross lovers chanting “USA! USA!” Big air, big celebrations, and a big weekend for the sport. It’s all about RedBuuuuud!

ou can consider Spring Creek the greatest-hits track of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross. It’s almost as if it took the best elements of each round and blended them into one magical place. The track features hills, sand, hard-pack, high-speed stuff, tighter sections, and more. It’s the all-you-can-eat buffet of motocross. You’re bound to find something you like out here, and that’s why riders list it as one of their favorites. Fans love it too. Rain or shine, they love the sport and will cheer from beginning to end. Expect a few fans to divert themselves to the actual Spring Creek

itself, though, for a refreshing summer dunk right next to the track. But they’ll get fired up again—especially for local heroes Alex and Jeremy Martin, who literally grew up at the track. (Their parents own the place!) A trip to Spring Creek offers up a slice of everything motocross, and the Millville trip packs some classic Americana. A long drive through the river-lined farm country on a beautiful summer day reminds you why road trips exist. At the end of the drive awaits the perfect motocross track and a great weekend at the races. Who doesn’t like rocking to a greatest-hits album?

nstagram really should add a Washougal filter to its photomanipulation portfolio, because every part of this racetrack and the surrounding area emits pure beauty. Even the drive in plays the role, as the winding road is lined by a river and lush evergreen trees. It’s tempting to pull over and jump in the river with the locals—but you don’t want to stop and miss the race! The Washougal track is shaded with evergreens, too, and the crisp mountain air is welcome in the middle of summer. This is the only Lucas Oil Pro Motocross stop in the great Pacific Northwest, so the fans are extra pumped to see their heroes in person.

FIRST YEAR AS A NATIONAL: 1980

94

Heck, even the dirt here looks good! While many modern motocross tracks flout a similar combination of deep, sandy, loamy soil, Washougal delivers rich, dark clay that challenges the riders in a completely different fashion. Washougal rewards a technical rider, as the slick surface requires precision, throttle control, and patience. You still need some of that classic motocross toughness, though, as the track forms up sharp bumps, and that black dirt really hurts when kicked back as roost. Expect to see plenty of that dirt kicked back at Washougal’s famous Horsepower Hill. It’s a drag race to the top, right into the heart of those evergreens. Oh yeah, it looks amazing!

nadilla! Perhaps no name speaks so loudly in the record books of motocross history, and that’s because Unadilla started hosting huge international events back in the formative days of American racing. Back then, European racers dominated the sport and the Americans were just starting to learn. Unadilla presented a rare chance for fans in the U.S. to see the world’s best, and an open opportunity for American racers to break through. Since then, the track has remained at the pinnacle, hosting a round of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross for decades. You can find photos and videos of nearly every major motocross star

racing at Unadilla. And while the facility continues to upgrade and elevate with several spectacular new obstacles, its trademark style comes from its own natural terrain. The land offers wide, flowing corners, huge bumps and jumps, and big hills—most of it carved out by Mother Nature instead of a bulldozer. Unadilla is all about toughness, rewarding riders who aren’t afraid to twist it harder than their competitors. Since the late 1960s, Unadilla has always presented pure motocross. With that comes the full spectrum, from spectacular wins to heartbreaking losses, all great stories told by the superstars of the sport. Whenever the gate drops at Unadilla, history is bound to be made.

half hour away from Budds Creek, politicians, lobbyists, and lawyers battle it out in Washington, D.C. Down at Budds, summertime life near the Potomac river seems so much more relaxed. When the gate drops for Lucas Oil Pro Motocross at Budds Creek Raceway, though, a fight begins that’s as fierce as anything on Capitol Hill. Budds Creek is wide open, fast, and unpredictable, and the riders always praise it as a favorite. Budds Creek’s soil is one of the keys to the ride, as it provides great traction and forms good lines for passing. It gets rough, but not so rough that anything becomes impassible. The frequent up-

and downhills can reward the daring— you can set up a pass by simply charging down a hill faster than a competitor. To fully execute that pass, though, you’ll also need to nail the rut at the bottom of the hill to perfection. It’s not an easy task, and that’s why Budds Creek often produces close racing. Since it’s scheduled late in the championship, Budds has the additional pressure of a quickly tightening title chase. Many greats have clinched championships here, or logged clutch rides to make life easier at the finale. Throw in championship implications with a favored racetrack and you’ve got something that people on both sides of the aisle can agree on: great racing.

ronman Raceway is a dream location for dirt bike racing. The surrounding land is completely flat, yet one small slice of this cornfield in Crawfordsville, Indiana, features huge hills, to accommodate the jumps and obstacles that are perfect for motocross. Further, the facility lies just an hour from the motorsports mecca of Indianapolis and about two and a half hours from the famous RedBud motocross track. Fans in this area know plenty about great racing. Ironman Raceway actually carved its racing rep through a Grand National Cross Country event in the surrounding woods, which draws thousands of riders and tens of thousands of spectators each fall. When a few trees were

FIRST YEAR AS A NATIONAL: 2014

removed from a section of the woods, perfect terrain for a motocross track was revealed. One of the big hills was transformed into the massive Godzilla uphill jump. The dirt here is perfect, and the remaining trees provide shade for the spectators. Plus, the flatlands that surround the track make for great pitting, parking, and spectating. As the series’ finale, Ironman puts the pressure on riders and teams to perform. Championships will be won and lost here, which means this dream track will make dreams come true for some riders—but also nightmares for others. Ironman Raceway might be the newest stop of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, but it’s already created its own place in motocross history.

dubbed the Olympics of Motocross, each nation sends a three-rider team to compete in the MXGP, MX2, and Open classes. The two-day format has qualifying on Saturday and then points-paying racing on Sunday. Of all the nations competing, only 20 will qualify for Sunday. Each rider then competes in two separate motos, adding up to six moto scores for each country. After dropping the worst moto, the best combined score wins.
