WELCOME Welcome to the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, a 12-round tour of America’s best motocross tracks contested by the most competitive, talented, and capable cast of riders anywhere. Expect an exciting afternoon featuring the best riders and teams in motorcycling, all adding up to a weekend experience unlike any other. At a glance, this championship celebrates motocross at its modern-day best, with the latest equipment and technology and highly upgraded experiences for the fans. On the other end, the series celebrates the sport’s history. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of motocross in America, kicked off when visionary promoter Edison Dye helped bring Husqvarna’s Torsten Hallman to the United States in 1966. Hallman was the first European professional rider to compete in America, and his tour had an immediate and positive impact. Soon after Hallman came more Europeans (and future AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers) including Joel Robert and Roger DeCoster, propelling the sport forward with style and professionalism. At its core, motocross remains what it was then: a sport that requires an elite level of talent and toughness. The experience trickles from the racetrack to the fence line, as thousands of fans each weekend spend hours soaking up what Mother Nature has to offer while getting up-close to the best in the game. Never shedding its outlaw rule-bending and limit-pushing appeal, motocross continues to elevate with world-class athletes digging deep each weekend in the quest to be the champion. If you can’t make every race, that’s okay: motocross continues to innovate off the track also. Races are now watched on televisions, tablets, and phones in hundreds of thousands of homes—and other summer weekend hot spots— across the world. Along with every moto of the 2017 season being available across NBC, NBC Sports Network, and MAVTV, the brand-new NBC Sports Gold Pro Motocross Pass offers live, non-

stop streams of the entire championship without commercial interruption. This includes qualifiers, full motos, highlights, replays of 2017 races, and archived races from 2015 and 2016. This year’s title chase begins with the oldest event on the circuit—Sacramento, California’s Hangtown Motocross Classic—and concludes in August at the newest facility on the tour, Crawfordsville, Indiana’s Ironman Raceway. In between those races are the pillars of American motocross, including Buchanan, Michigan’s RedBud National; New Berlin, New York’s Unadilla MX; Washougal MX Park in Washington; and more. Every facility that hosts a round of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross also features youth and amateur events, helping to grow the sport and groom tomorrow’s stars. In the sport’s early days, equipment quality was shaky at best. With frequent crashes and the sport’s general rough nature, bikes were often unable to finish. Fans who wanted to see a particular rider wouldn’t appreciate his race ending just a few minutes in, so organizers implemented the two-moto format. HOW IT WORKS

THE FLAGS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Why do the riders seem so exhausted after a race? Doesn’t the engine do all the work? The engines are extremely powerful—just holding on to the bike can be tiring—but they only move the bike forward. Riders constantly make rapid corrections and line changes, all while rushing forward on a racing surface that is extremely rough and choppy. Riders shift from sitting to standing throughout a lap; add frequent triple-digit heat and stifling humidity, and you’ve got a physical challenge that only the fittest athletes can endure.

GREEN The green flag signifies the start of the race or timed qualifying session. YELLOW A yellow flag on the track means there is danger ahead. Riders should exercise caution when a yellow flag is displayed. Passing and jumping are allowed when the yellow flag is displayed. BLUE WITH YELLOW STRIPE This lets riders know they are about to be passed by the leaders. The blue flag is placed throughout the racetrack as a courtesy to the riders. Riders who are being passed by the leaders need to hold their current line and not impede the leaders. Once the leaders have passed, the rider may continue to race, but not race with the leaders. WHITE WITH RED MARKINGS The “Wheels on the Ground Flag” is displayed at blind jumps or other dangerous areas on the track. It indicates

that no jumping or passing is allowed until the rider has safely passed the area of concern. Should a rider jump or pass another competitor in this section, they will be penalized. BLACK A rider receiving the black flag must pull off the racetrack and see the race director or designee to find out what the problem is. The race director will determine whether the rider can continue in that race or timed qualifying session. RED The race or timed qualifying session has been stopped, and riders must report back to the staging area to await further instruction. WHITE One lap remains in the race. CHECKERED The race or timed qualifying session is over. Riders will leave the racetrack at the designated track exit.

The champion always wears #1, and numbers 10 to 99 are assigned according to combined motocross and supercross points in the previous season. The difference is not always black-andwhite, but Lucas Oil Pro Motocross competitors can be divided into two groups: self-supported (privateers) and factorysupported. Factory riders are the upper echelon, earn salaries, and are provided with bikes, transportation, a mechanic, and most other necessities. Since semis are usually only financially accessible to factory efforts (and a few well-funded privateer teams), these riders are typically the only ones who enjoy this luxury. angtown hosts the opening round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, so it serves as the annual jumping-off point between stadium supercross and outdoor motocross. And it’s a jarring transition, because Hangtown serves up some of the roughest, bumpiest terrain riders will face all year. The track looks beautiful and perfect when the day begins—high noon at Hangtown—and the opening ceremonies feel like a part of history, laced with bits of Americana and the Old West. It’s all groomed, prepped, and perfect. Then the pack charges through the first turn, the season begins, and it all changes in an instant. Forget beautiful and groomed, forget the opening ceremonies, forget the precision of supercross—this is rough, nasty, squareedged motocross chop, and only the

toughest will come out of Hangtown with their title hopes alive. Oh, sure, they’ve got the modern stuff here—the massive Fly 150 jump is possibly the biggest in the entire series. The essence of Hangtown, though, is woven into each and every section, from the turns to the hills and even the straights. It gets bumpy everywhere, and the riders either have to be smart enough to find a few inches of smooth real estate or tough enough to blast through the trenches. That’s a big enough challenge on a regular day, but when you consider it’s the opener, and riders are still sorting out bike settings and fitness programs, the door opens for surprising results. Hangtown can send the professional dirt bike season in all sorts of new directions, and it leaves no doubt about just how tough the road will be.

Today’s riders and bikes can do incredible things. On a massive playground like Glen Helen, fans can see the upper limits of motorsports and athletic competition in general. otocross means many things to many people, but few events offer up a wider range of positive elements than the annual Thunder Valley National in Colorado. While many tracks are built deep in the hinterlands, far from cities and towns, the TVMX track sits just off the highway with the Denver skyline in the distance. Even when a professional athletic competition isn’t taking place at the track, the surrounding area is dotted with cyclists and joggers challenging themselves in the mile-high air. When the Pro Motocross crew rolls in, though, they grab their own bikes and running shoes and get in on the act too. Want to unwind when that’s

done? The famous Red Rocks Amphitheater sits just above the track, and downtown Denver offers plenty to do. Everything around the track is worth the trip, but then the race comes to town and it becomes super special. That elevation slows the bikes and strains the riders, often making the racing tighter and harder to predict. The huge jumps would be tough on any track, but against the elevation and the hillclimbs, they’re even more challenging to clear. The rest of the track is dotted with long, deep ruts that put a premium on riding fast without making mistakes. It’s a racer’s track in a spectator’s paradise, and it’s worth the trip from anywhere.

here might not be a better place to see motocross—literally—than High Point Raceway. This track weaves its way around a deep valley, which creates constant elevation change for the riders. From the slippery off-camber corners to high-speed runs to and from the valley floor—not to mention the new longer uphill start—no section of this track is completely flat, and that makes for a true challenge. But what makes it tough for the athletes makes it great for the spectators, as several vantage points atop the valley offer views of 100 percent of the track. Further, High Point’s jumps were engineered to sit right in front of the main spectator areas, letting fans get close while they watch the

riders go big. Some call it moto theater, and it’s a show filled with ups and downs, twists and turns. Those views aren’t wasted, either, as High Point’s fans are some of the most enthusiastic in the sport. From the moment the gate drops behind that uphill start and the riders race around the brand new first turn and then dive downhill and into the off-cambers, you’ll have a taste of the challenges that lie ahead. The atmosphere surrounding the entire weekend is off the charts. The rider who masters the hillsides of High Point will be rewarded with the big trophy and with huge support from the spectators who witnessed every inch of his winning run.

here’s a proud history of motocross in the Southeast, and much of that history unfolded on the soil of Muddy Creek Raceway. The track only joined the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross schedule in 2013, but many of the circuit’s top riders were already familiar with it from days spent racing there in the amateur ranks. Even at the pro National, the track offers its legendary family-friendly feel. From the small towns surrounding the track to the deep rows of trucks, trailers, and motor homes in the amateur pits, Muddy Creek Raceway retains its familiar character. But once the gate drops, today’s top riders and equipment slice up the track, pushing the pace and going higher and

faster than ever before. That’s when you know this track has truly earned its place on the big stage. And what a stage it is! Muddy Creek weaves in and out of a valley and offers several tight 180-degree turns that are perfect for passing. On the high-speed sections, riders air out over huge jumps, from a series of tabletops in front of the spectators to the Bomber Triple. The obstacles on pro day definitely aren’t for the faint of heart. The track offers such good racing that several motos have come down to the final turn of the race. If you’ve come to witness some Southeastern motocross history firsthand, you won’t be disappointed.

This is the July Fourth holiday done motocross-style, and RedBud rocks all weekend with the biggest and heartiest collection of fans you’ll see anywhere. Powered by the love of moto, the love of the USA, and the love of other people who love moto and the USA, the fun rages on day and night, culminating with an absolutely bonkers podium celebration, fans piled up a hundred deep at the fence. If you haven’t been here in person, you’ve never seen anything like it.

As RedBud grows in stature, the event organizers build up the track to match. Way off in the corner of the property sits a nearly limitless supply of sand, and hundreds of truckloads have been mixed into the soil to create a surface that’s simultaneously soft and fluffy but rough and nasty. There’s always loads of traction, so the riders can hang it out to the edge. That’s really helpful, since RedBud boasts one of the most famous jumps in the sport: LaRocco’s Leap, which is of course set right next to big grandstands filled with motocross lovers chanting “USA! USA!” You need to be part of it!

otocross’ most famous sandbox plays host to Lucas Oil Pro Motocross again with its classic ultra-rough terrain, an endless bump-fest that just gets deeper and tougher as the day goes on. A sand track is an entirely different animal than most, and if the riders aren’t prepared, it will eat them up. The key to the Wick is adapting to its ever-shifting terrain. Fans should get there early to see how smooth the track looks before practice begins—and how quickly the bumps begin to form. By the end of practice, the place is totally whooped out, and those whoops only get deeper during the motos. The smartest riders will keep searching for smoother lines, hitting the untouched spots until they get rough, then finding

new ground elsewhere. Making these decisions while your heart, lungs, and muscles are screaming is something only the toughest and fittest can do. Southwick is so unique that it favors local riders more than any other track. They know where the good lines will develop, and the Wick faithful will be pushing them to dig deep late in the motos. Be sure to scan the entries for each hometown rider on the list—someone you’ve never heard of might be in contention for a podium. For all its gnarliness, Southwick is nestled right in the middle of a very quaint downtown area. You’ll be surprised to find a legendary motocross track right next to baseball fields and an American Legion post, but all that just adds to an experience unlike any other.

The famous sand whoops—an outand-back test of bike setup and rider fitness—get the most attention. It’s worth spending a moto by them just to see how

everyone attacks the section every lap. There’s much more to see, though. The hill in the center of the track goes on forever, up and down, earning it the name Mt. Martin. The jumps are spectacular, the start is mega-fast, and there are plenty of left-right combinations to make passes. And the soil ranges from deep sand in the whoops to choppy clay on the hills. There’s something for everyone here, so start with the whoops and then try to find a new vantage point for each moto.

From the thick evergreen trees to the beautiful Columbia River to downtown Portland, Oregon—which is always keeping itself weird—there’s never a shortage of things to see and do in this area. Come for the motocross, stay for the scenery! Washougal has carved out a unique niche as a track. First, it’s the only race all year near the Pacific Northwest, so fans are extra pumped to see their heroes in person. Second, while many events on the schedule offer a similar combination

of deep, sandy, loamy soil, Washougal delivers dark clay that challenges the riders in a completely different fashion. At Washougal, the technicians get their reward, as it’s all about precision, throttle control, and smarts. lenty of motocross tracks have been around for a long time, but Unadilla holds a special spot in the sport’s pantheon. It jumped to the forefront of American racing by hosting huge international events back when European racers dominated the sport and the Americans were just starting to learn—and it has remained at the pinnacle, hosting a round of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross for decades. Thanks to this, you can find a photo of every major motocross star racing at Unadilla. And while the facility has gone

through recent renovations and upgrades and has added several spectacular new obstacles, Unadilla’s heart comes from its own natural terrain. The lay of the land offers wide, flowing lines, big hills, and massive jumps, many carved out by Mother Nature instead of a bulldozer. Make a weekend out of this one so you can check out D.C. and the beautiful Maryland countryside, and then enjoy some of the most intense motocross action anywhere. ruising up to the Ironman National, not far from the motorsports mecca of Indianapolis, you’ll see picturesque views of small-town America. The late-summer date means porch weather, and that draws all the locals, who marvel at the professional cavalcade that has rolled into town. You get a sense that this race offers everything you want in a big-time motocross race—well, except one thing. The land surrounding the track looks flat. Where are the hills? The elevation changes? Can this possibly work? You park your crew in the huge, flat field—perfect for camping and pitting—and head out to see the big rigs in the easily accessible pro pits. Then you walk toward the track, and suddenly the ground opens up, drops down, and practically swallows the racetrack whole. The Ironman Raceway

track doesn’t just offer elevation changes—it offers some of the biggest, steepest combinations of jumps and hills in the entire series. That includes Godzilla, a massive and justifiably famous uphill jump. You’ve already sensed that the rest of the track is perfect: the dirt, the obstacles, the sightlines. Add in those hills, and you’ve got pure motocross. By the end of the day, that deep soil gets rough and rutted, and only those wise in old-school motocross techniques like standing up and changing lines can succeed. This track makes for a fitting season finale; the dynamic terrain seems almost like a combination of every track in the series rolled into one. Indiana is said to be the crossroads of America, and the Ironman National track is the perfect crossroads to determine America’s motocross champions.
