Research working built-environment in Binckhorst: AVR-Afvalverwerking (by Jan Brower Associate, 1994-1996)

USE: Overslag Van Huisvuil is a continuous process of loading and unloading lorries, waste moving shovels, loading and unloading ships. The transhipment station at Binckhorst, where all garbage trucks in The Hague unload their cargo, can skip 350 thousand tons of waste, taking the plot area of 7,000sqm or so. These large-scale means of transport and functions ask for a large column-free space. he building is situated elongated along the Haagse Trekvliet. The entrance port runs under the building so that the bow of the container ships reaches below the raised administration building, from where you have a good view of the weighbridges. Here is recorded and administered how much comes in and how much goes out.

ORNAMENT: The administration section forms a recognizable separate unit in the large free space. It is round and red, where the hall is rectangular and 'colorless'. The hall itself is covered with a large undulating roof surface, supported by eighteen pylons on nine columns. Despite the large building mass, it looks transparent and airy. The faรงades serve only as one visual separation between inside and outside. The underside consists of a plinth of concrete elements. Behind this is the waste and the five-meter-higher dumping board is located. Above that, the facade is provided with glass building blocks. They provide light, are smooth and therefore easy to clean, and provide an appearance in the evening and in the early morning hours a busy hive. At the container transfer the faรงades are equipped with sound-absorbing panels that must attenuate the noise of loading and unloading as much as possible. They consist of perforated steel sheet pile plating, a filling of insulation wool and steel grids on the outside. Finally, in the installation rooms, the facades only consist of grilles that give a view of the building's technology. The building received an honorable mention in 1998 from the jury of the Staalprijs.

STRUCTURE: A steel support construction was the most suitable and contributes to a low environmental impact of the building. This steel construction - in the form of triangular beams, girders and castellated beams for the facades - restricts material utility.
