What is decoding?

Decoding is the process of reading a word by sounding out the letter sounds and blending them together.

What are decodable books?

Designed for children who are learning to read, decodable books are carefully written stories and texts that use only the letter sounds students have been taught. They offer students the opportunity to practice decoding words, which in turn helps to develop their reading fluency by having them sound out the letters on the page and blend them into words. With repeated practice, children can read words quickly and fluently, gradually recognizing them by sight. They also have an opportunity to develop word recognition for high-frequency words that will help them to read fluently.

Encourage the students to say the sounds as they write them and then blend the three sounds in each word together as they write them.

• Using sound cards or magnetic letters, demonstrate how to build the word “pip.”

Explain to the students that you will be making one change to the word. They must be “sound detectives” and notice if you have added a sound, taken away a sound, or swapped a sound.

• Say that you are going to change the word “pip” (moving your finger under the word) to “pit.” Ask the students to listen carefully to where the change has occurred. Move your finger under the word as you say it slowly.

Once the change has been identified, invite a student to swap the sound card or letter.

Diagnostic Assessment

Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) is a method that focuses on the systematic instruction of phonics. In this approach, students are taught to recognize graphemes and their corresponding phonemes. SSP involves a sequenced order of teaching where children first learn simple letter–sound correspondences (like ‘s’ for /s/) and then progress to more complex sound patterns (like ‘igh’ for /ie/). The method emphasizes the blending or synthesizing of these sounds to read words.

SSP is a highly structured approach that ensures that no phonics elements are left out and each new skill builds upon previously learned skills. This approach is widely considered effective for phonics instruction and is used in many educational systems.

Systematic phonics in reading instruction

SYNTHETIC PHONICS VS ANALYTIC PHONICS In synthetic phonics instruction, the reader is taught to sound out individual sounds in a word and blend these sounds together to form the word. This method emphasizes the synthesis (blending) of individual sounds into a word. For example, the word “frog” is learned by sounding out each phoneme, /f/ /r/ /o/ /g/, and then blending these sounds to say “frog.”

Conversely, analytic phonics focuses on teaching readers to break the word up into parts. This begins with an analysis of

the whole word, which is broken into onset and rime, e.g. ‘fr’ + ‘og’ “frog.”

The conclusion based on research, notably Watson and Johnson (2004) and the Rose Report (2006), is that synthetic phonics is the most effective way to teach all children to read.

Analytic phonics often includes using known words as analogies. For example: if you know that “cat” ends with ‘at’ then you know that “mat” must also end with ‘at.’

3. Explain to the student that the words in lists 2–5 are nonsense words which help to assess decoding skills.

4. If the student starts to struggle, complete that section for diagnostic purposes. The teacher will need to use their judgement as to whether to start at this point or to start from the previous section in order to build up the confidence of the learner.

Phonemic awareness is a pivotal skill for beginner readers that will play an important role in their journey towards literacy. Research has shown that phonics and phonemic awareness grow in tandem, and the most effective reading instruction teaches phonemic awareness with phonics.
