The 2009 Delaware Valley’s Most Influential Latinos edition A Message from the Publisher… Welcome to the 2009 edition of the Most Influential Latinos magazine. This annual publication originated in 2006 and resulted in an incredible, positive impact as the first publication of its kind, highlighting the region’s Latino community. The Most Influential Latinos magazine is a collection of a group of 50 local Latino leaders that were nominated by their peers and selected through a distinguished committee. Developed as a need to showcase the accomplishments of our local Latino community, these leaders are highlighted and recognized for their contributions to Latinos and their community at-large, through this publication. This year, we build upon our success on previous years and present a collection of esteemed professionals that really make our community proud. This magazine is divided in four sections that present different groups of people, all of them successful within their professions. First, the 10 Under 40 group, is a collection of the community’s next generation of leaders; then, Latino Leaders is a category that includes many seasoned executives and officials who work tirelessly toward the betterment of our community. Next, we have the Movers and Shakers, who are defined by their significant impact to create and generate opportunities that move forward and progress for the benefit of the larger community; and finally, the Most Influential are a group of individuals that have strongly influenced a course of events and changed the way people relate to one another through their accomplishments and extraordinary work during the past year. This year we have a distinguished guest speaker, Mr. Frank Lopez, a former President of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and current President of The Taino Group, who will be speaking at the award ceremony. I personally invite all of our readers to enjoy this publication as it highlights some of the best and brightest stars that help make the Philadelphia a great Region for Latinos. The 2009 leaders inducted share individual success stories and recognize the meaningful commitment they exhibit as local role models for our youth. O
nce again, it’s a tremendous privilege for us to be able to recognize the accomplishments and successes of many Latinos that honor their community and purpose themselves to fight for the betterment of our people. These role models are dedicated to uplifting the lives of others, while achieving their dream. This dream is not selfish, but one that pushes them individually to become better leaders so they can make a difference from the top. In 2009, our fourth year, the process of choosing the voting committee became a lot more demanding as we looked deeper into the nominee’s work, to verify their selection was as accurate as possible. Our final 50 awardees were chosen of a list from around the entire Delaware Valley. Some awardees are well known and visible within the community but, many more are considered invisible. These leaders work behind closed doors, achieving and making a huge difference that will not just affect their family, but impact our society on a whole. Latinos are a powerful group of very diverse people linked by a common heritage. This heritage has united us together to form a powerful force that the nation and world have recognized. Latinos are the largest minority in the nation. It is our hopes that as we continue to gain strength through our numbers, we will remain diligent in our efforts to highlight the greatness of our people by producing this publication. Our efforts to acknowledge our influential leaders locally and regionally, is one small step towards a common, shared goal. A goal to unify our community and affect positive change. Thank all of you for your diligence and hard work in achieving your accomplishments. As we achieve, let’s not rest on our success but, keep striving to attain more while we influence the next generation to join us. The 50 Most Influential Latinos in the Delaware Valley are a powerful example of what determination and leadership can achieve. Congratulations!

Karina coordina la Semana Binacional de Salud y la implementación de la Ventanilla de Salud en las instalaciones del Consulado. Karina es egresada del Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey como Licenciada en Relaciones Internacionales.
Pennsylvania State Director for Democracia USA and AHORA. A non-partisan Hispanic voter registration, civic engagement and leadership development organization which seek to increase the prominence and participation of Latinos in the American democratic process. Miguel was born in Puerto Rico. Prior to joining Democracia USA, Miguel worked for ASPIRA, Inc. of Pennsylvania as its Youth Development Coordinator. He worked for Congreso on a consulting basis.
Community Relations Coordinator, Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia: Karina promotes programs for the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME), in issues concerning education, health, culture, sports and economy for Mexicans living in PA, DE, and the Southern part of NJ. She also coordinates health services in the Consulate. Karina graduated in International Relations from Monterrey Institute of Technology.

General Assignment Reporter, FOX 29 News. Nefertiti joined the FOX 29 News team as a general assignment reporter in October 2007. Nefertiti moved to Philadelphia from Miami, where she was a general assignment reporter at the CBS station, WFOR-4, since 2004. Nefertiti graduated with honors from Brown University, where she studied political science and public policy. Nefertiti was born and raised in Providence, RI. She is an Emmy nominated Reporter.
Deputy Commissioner, Department of Human Services. Appointed to that position in 2008, Cynthia oversees the Division of Community Based Prevention Services and serves as the lead for the alignment of all prevention services in the Department and provides leadership on key City wide initiatives. Born in Puerto Rico in 1973, Cynthia holds a Fine Arts Degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile Alabama. Vicecomisionada, Departamento de Servicios Humanos. Reportera General, FOX 29 News. Nefertiti se unió al equipo de noticias de FOX 29 en octubre del 2007. Con anterioridad, Nefertiti vivía en Miami, donde trabajaba como reportera de la estación CBS WFOR-4 desde el 2004. Nefertiti estudio ciencias políticas y política pública en la Universidad de Brown, donde se gradúo con honores. Nacida y criada en Providence R.I. Nefertiti es una reportera nominada al Emmy.
David Lugo Principal, Thomas A. Edison High School and John C. Fareira Skill Center. In 2004, David became an Assistant Principal at the school, the second largest high school of the City of Philadelphia; in 2007 he became the Principal. After graduating with honors in 1994 from the University of Puerto Rico with a Bachelors of Arts in Secondary Education, Mr. Lugo continued with a Masters in Education at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. He obtained his Principal Certificate from Holy Family University and most recently, his Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from Arcadia University. Director, Thomas A. Pedro Rivera Superintendent for the School District of Lancaster. In July 2008, Pedro began his tenure as Superintendent of Lancaster. Pedro has spent his entire career in urban education. His career path includes classroom teacher, Union Staffer, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Central Office Administrator for the School District of Philadelphia. Pedro earned a B.S. from Penn State University; his Masters degree in Education Administration from Cheyney University and his Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from Arcadia University. Superintendente del Distrito Escolar de Lancaster. Pedro comenzó en esta posición en julio del 2008. Pedro ha trabajado toda su vida profesional en educación urbana. Teresa Rodriguez President of the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania. Teresa is currently an attorney with the legal services agency Friends of Farmworkers, Inc. This agency provides legal representation and advocacy on behalf of agricultural, and other low wage immigrant workers. Teresa is also a director of the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania Legal Education Fund, and Co-Chair of the Civil Rights Committee of the Philadelphia Bar Association. Teresa graduated with a J.D. from the James E. Beasley Temple School of Law, and has a BS in Labor Studies and Industrial Relations from the Pennsylvania State University. Rubi Pacheco-Rivera Philadelphia Commerce Department, Assistant Commerce Director for Neighborhood and Business Services. In this role, Ruby promotes access and opportunity for businesses throughout the region. Previously, Rubi served as Deputy Director for Special Projects in the Mayor’s Business Enterprise Council, and as a Business Manager in charge of the Puerto Rican Festival at Concilio. Rubi was born and raised in Philadelphia, and gained her MBA from LaSalle University. Director Asistente para Vecindarios, Negocios y Servicios del Departamento de Comercio de Filadelfia. En este rol, Rubi promueve el acceso y oportunidades de negocios a través de toda la región. Maria Celina Price Verizon Wireless, Multicultural Marketing Consultant. In this role, Celina is actively engaged in assessing potential sponsorship and branding opportunities as well as strengthening the company’s community-based relationships with the Latino, African American and Asian communities in the Philadelphia region. Born and raised in Argentina, Celina arrived to the US at the age of 14. She works closely with several organizations focused on investment in literacy, continuing education and mentoring of young professionals. She also is on the Advisory Board for the Professional Mentoring Network (PMN.) Consultora de Mercadeo Multicultural para Verizon Wireless. En este rol, Celina busca oportunidades de patrocinio y posicionamiento de su compañía; así como fortalecer la relación de la compañía con organizaciones de base latinas, afroamericanas y asiáticas en Filadelfia. Nacida en Argentina, Celina llegó a los Estados Unidos a los 14 años. Ella trabaja muy de cerca con organizaciones de educación continuada y mentoras de profesionales jóvenes; y es miembro de la Junta Asesora de la Red de Mentores Profesionales.
Orlando R. Quevedo Acclaimed artist, teacher and professor of art. Orland was born in 1970 in Cuba. He came to the States in 199. At age 15, Orlando was awarded first prize in the International Young Artist Exhibitions both in Moscow and Havana, along with numerous first prize awards in the yeas to fallow. His art has been exhibited at the International Art Expo in New York from 2000 to 2002 among many others. Since 2007, Orlando opened Orlando’s Art Gallery, his permanent exhibition in North Philadelphia. Aclamado Artista y Profesor de Artes. Orlando nació en 1970 en Cuba; vino a los Estados Unidos en 1993. A los 15 años, Orlando se ganó el primer premio en la Exposición Internacional de Artistas Jóvenes en Moscú y la Habana; así como muchos otros en los años siguientes. Ismael Arcelay Allentown Mayor’s Special Assistant. In this role, he represents the Mayor in city functions, community meetings, and with other elected officials. Act as a liaison with city employees as well as constituents concerning matters pertaining to the Mayor’s office. Officer of Allentown’s Human Relations, Director to the Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Ismael has been Bethlehem City Councilman, and currently serves as a commissioner for the Pennsylvania Humans Relation Commission. He holds a B.A from Muhlenberg College and is currently working on his MBA in Public Administration from Strayer College.
Jesse Bermudez Founder of AMLA. Jesse was founder of the Asociacion de Musicos Latino Americanos AMLA in 1982 and in 1986 founded the first Latin Music School, now currently under Artistas y Musicos Latino Americanos the AMLA School of Performing Arts. Host of “Sonido Diferente” on Mega 1310 on Saturdays. Jesse has been involved in the Latin music in Philadelphia for over 30 years. Jesse also created many educational programs with music to public and parochial school s in the Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. His recording of Papo Vazquez and the Mighty Pirate Orchestra Recorded Live at the Painted Bride Arts center was nominated in 2008 for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Recording.

Latino Leaders Asistente especial del Alcalde de Allentown. Como tal, representa al Alcalde en eventos y reuniones. Actúa como punto de contacto entre empleados y contribuyentes con la oficina del alcalde. Miembro de la Comisión de Relaciones Humanas de Allentown, es también Director de Organizaciones de Base Religiosa y Organizaciones de vecindarios. Ismael ha sido Concejal de la Ciudad de Bethlehem, y es Comisionado de la Comisión de Relaciones Humanas de Pensilvania. Recibió su B.A de Muhlenberg College, y está cursando su MBA en Administración Publica en Strayer College.
Fundador de AMLA. Jesse fundó AMLA, la Asociación de Músicos Latinoamericanos en 1982; y en 1986 fundó la primera escuela de música latina, The AMLA School of Performing Arts. President Casa de Venezuela Delaware Valley. He is a Switch Engineer at SNiP Communications, a member of the Steering Committee of the Latino Partnership Initiative, Director of Community Relations of ALPFA, Philadelphia chapter (Association of Latino Professional in Finance and Accounting), and member of SPHE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers). Emilio was born in 1973 in Venezuela. He obtained his Engineering degree in Telecommunications Sciences in 1995 from the Instituto Universitario Antonio Jose de Sucre. In 2004, along with a group of Venezuelan friends, Emilio founded Casa de Venezuela, a nonprofit organization that promotes the culture, roots, and traditions of Venezuela.

Dann Cuellar 6ABC Action News Reporter. Dann joined Action News as a reporter in 1988. During his tenure at Action News, he has covered many major news events including the terrorist attacks. Both the attacks in 1993 and 2001 on the World Trade Center in New York, The massacre at Columbine High School, The Waco Siege, and the Oklahoma City bombing on the Murrah Federal Bldg. He has also covered major conflicts including the Persian Gulf War in 1991, the conflict in Bosnia, the American Intervention in Haiti and most recently the latest conflict in Iraq.

Latino Partnership Initiative, Coordinator. Felicita has participated in many volunteer and professional activities on behalf of Latino communities throughout her life. Founded with a group of volunteers in 1995, The Latino Partnership Initiative is a grassroots, volunteer- led coalition with a mission to improve the well being of Philadelphia’s Latino community. To date the Latino Partnership Initiative is one of the major (and few) organizations that actively seeks to develop young leadership. The Latino Partnership Initiative organizes and sponsors the Latino Golden Age Committee; Yearly Latino Golden Age Conference; Leadership and Volunteer Senior of the Year Award; the Latino Partnership Leadership Institute; and the Coalition for Latin American Migrants and Immigrants.
Univision 65’s main anchor. In 2000 Ilia joined the Univision family as a sales and marketing coordinator. In 2002, the Univision affiliate in Philadelphia/Vineland, gave her the opportunity to work as a freelance anchor and reporter; and in 2004, Ilia became the TV Station’s main anchor. Since then she has conducted interviews with a number of political leaders such as Presidential candidate John McCain, the President of Mexico Vicente Fox and current and past Governors of Puerto Rico. A native of Puerto Rico, Ilia received a Bachelor’s degree in Communications; and a Master’s degree in Public Affairs, graduating with honors, from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Coordinadora de la Iniciativa Latina. Durante toda su vida, Felicita ha participado en muchas actividades profesionales y voluntarias en representación de la Comunidad Latina. Fundada en 1995, la Iniciativa Latina es un movimiento de base, una coalición liderada por voluntarios, cuya misión es mejorar el bienestar de la comunidad latina de Filadelfia. Presentadora de noticias de Univisión 65. En el 2000, Ilia se unió a la familia Univisión como coordinadora de ventas y mercadeo. En el 2002, la afiliada de Univisión en Filadelfia le dio la oportunidad de trabajar como presentadora y reportera freelance; en el 2004, Ilia se convirtió en la presentadora principal de la estación. Desde entonces ha entrevistado a muchos líderes políticos y candidatos presidenciales como John McCain; Vicente Fox, ex Presidente de México, y el actual y pasado gobernador de Puerto Rico. Nativa de Puerto Rico, Ilia recibió su diploma en Comunicaciones y su Maestría en Asuntos Públicos, graduándose con honores de la Universidad de Massachusetts en Amherst.
Wilfredo González President of Centro Musical. The business now in the hands of his two children, Maria Cristina and Ray Gonzalez, has been serving the Hispanic community for over 50 years. He served in the US Army and is a Vietnam War veteran. He is currently Vice Commander, Historian and Finance Commander for the Latin American Legion Post 840, past President of Jorge Bird Lion Club, and one of the founding members of the Pan American Lions Club. Wilfredo is also an avid supported of the local artistic community in Philadelphia, he supports the Philadelphia Hispanic radio stations.

Juan J. Gonzalez, Esquire President Parada San Juan Bautista. Since 1997, Juan has served as Coordinator and President of the Parada San Juan Bautista, the Puerto Rican Parade of Camden. Since 1998, Juan has been practicing law as a solo-practitioner in Camden, specializing in Criminal Law, Municipal Court and Family matters. Juan has served as a Trustee with the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey, the Camden County Bar Association and the Camden County Hispanic Bar Association. Juan was born and raised in Camden; he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Seton Hall University and graduated from Rutgers University, School of Law at Camden. He also has been teaching at Camden County College as an adjunct professor in the Paralegal Studies Program since 2007.

Presidente de la Parada San Juan Bautista. Desde 1997, Juan ha sido Coordinador y Presidente de la Parada San Juan Bautista de Camden. Desde 1998, Juan tiene su práctica legal individual en Camden, especializada en Justicia Criminal, Corte Municipal y Asuntos de Familia. Ha servido como fideicomisario para la Asociación de Abogados Hispanos de New Jersey, la Asociación de Abogados del Condado de Camden, y la Asociación de Abogados Hispanos del Condado de Camden. Nacido y criado en Camden, Juan se graduó en Justicia Criminal de la Universidad Seton Hall; y en Leyes de la Universidad de Rutgers; y desde el 2007, ha sido profesor adjunto en el programa de estudios paralegales en Camden County College.

Ricardo Hurtado Publisher El Sol Latino Newspaper. President/CEO of Grupo Bogota. After a rocky beginning with a small start-up capital, Ricardo managed to create a few enterprises that thrive and contribute to the community. In the last decade, his businesses have diversified and experience an important growth. He intends to continue growing with the newspapers, stores and restaurants. Ricardo was born in Colombia; he attended Penn State University, receiving a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Business Administration along with the Dale Carnegie School award for excellence.
Director de El Sol Latino Newspaper. Presidente del Grupo Bogotá. Después de un comienzo difícil con un pequeño capital, Ricardo logro crear un grupo de negocios que continúan creciendo y contribuyendo con la comunidad. En la última década, sus negocios se han diversificado y experimentado un importante crecimiento. Su intención es continuar creciendo en los negocios del periódico, las tiendas y restaurantes. Ricardo nació en Colombia; Estudio en Penn State University, donde se graduó en Administración de Negocios. Ricardo también recibió el premio a la excelencia de la Escuela Dale Carnegie.
Judge Nazario Jimenez Municipal Court Judge. Judge Jimenez is truly a product of Philadelphia. Arriving here at age 4 from Puerto Rico, he lived in the Spring Garden and the North Philadelphia area. He attended Ludlow, Penn Treaty, and Dobbins Voc. H. S. He received his degree from Penn State University, and his legal studies at the Dickinson School of Law. Currently he is the only Latino serving as Judge in the Municipal Court. Although he has an extensive and diverse legal background, his most rewarding period was his neighborhood law practice for over 15 years, serving the Latino community. Juez de la Corte Municipal. El Juez Jiménez es un verdadero producto de Filadelfia, a donde llegó a los 4 años, proveniente de Puerto Rico. En esta ciudad, vivió en el área de Spring Garden, y en el norte de Filadelfia. Estudió en Ludlow, Penn Treaty, y Dobbins Voc. High School. Recibió su grado de Penn State University, y sus estudios legales de la Escuela de Leyes Dickinson. Actualmente es el único juez latino en la Corte Municipal en Filadelfia. Aunque tiene una amplia experiencia legal, su período más satisfactorio fue su práctica legal en el barrio por 15 años, sirviendo a la comunidad latina. Fue presidente del Concilio.
Julio Cesar Largo Reporter/ News anchor for Univision 65. Since 2002, Julio has been the official voice for Univision 65, where he also works as a reporter and anchor of the “Noticias 65” daily newscast program. Julio is a voice-over artist, specializing in narration for commercials, documentary, industrial and medical audio visual projects for several companies. Julio has a long history of community involvement and activism and plays an important role in Acción Colombia, a non- profit community based organization to advance Colombians in the region. Julio Cesar was born in Colombia; he holds a degree in Business Administration from Santiago De Cali University, and has extensive experience working in radio and TV.

Leyla Moreno Senior Public Affairs Specialist for Health Partners. In her current role, Leyla is responsible for developing and maintaining positive relationships with local community organizations and other external constituents in an effort to increase visibility and promote a positive corporate image for Health Partners. She is also responsible for developing and coordinating various community outreach events for Health Partners members. Previously, Leyla served as the Latino outreach coordinator/federal public policy liaison for the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Leyla received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, with a minor in Spanish and Latin American studies, from Temple University, where she graduated Cum Laude.

President of SALEA. Homicide Detective with the Philadelphia Police Department, Willie represents Latino Police Officers and Sheriff Deputies as President of the Spanish American Law Enforcement Association, SALEA. In December of 2006 Willie was elected President of SALEA, a volunteer non-profit Community Based Organization mainly consisting of Philadelphia Police Officers and Sheriff Deputies who are encouraged to perform community service by mentoring young children.
Director of Behavioral Health Program for COMHAR, under his tenure, the program has grown exponentially; from 700 to more than 3,000 patients. Dante is also President of Casa Dominicana, a non profit organization that promotes Dominican culture in the region, and a professor. Born in Santo Domingo, he is a Physician, gynecologist and obstetrician from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo. Dante is also a certified Therapist in behavioral issues.

Leticia Roa-Nixon Community Journalist. Leticia was born in Mexico City and has lived in Philadelphia since 1985. She has a B.S. in Communications from Universidad Iberoamericana and has dedicated over 37 years to community journalism. Since 1992, she has been a news reporter for Philadelphia Hispanic newspapers, and written hundreds of stories about the Latino community. Leticia was co-editor of Mirrors and Windows/Espejos y Ventanas, Oral Stories of Mexicans of Kennett Square.

Uriel Rendón
Sales Manager for WEMG- La Mega 1310. Uriel has worked as General Sales Manager for Univision-42 and General Manager for WTVE Telemundo 51. In 2005, he oversaw a Joint Sales Agreement between WWSI-TV Telemundo 62 and Comcast Spotlight. He served as President of the Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and most recently he was part of the Latino Men Back to Basics Coalition and continues his involvement in many community based organizations. Of Colombian parents Rendón grew up in Puerto Rico. After high school he played soccer for the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Campus on an athletic scholarship. He receiveed a BBA in Marketing from Temple University.
Clara Rivas VP and General Manager of WWSI Telemundo. Clara became VP of Telemundo since March 2008. During the last 12 months WWSI has more than doubled its cable and satellite distribution, she has assembled a talented team to market and brand Telemundo Philadelphia. Born in Colombia, Clara graduated at the top of her class from Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin, with a degree of Business Administration and Finance. After leaving Colombia in 1968, Clara has resided in Denver, San Antonio and is now a resident of Philadelphia. She has ample experience working with local radio and TV stations. Clara has been working with Telemundo in different parts of the country since 1989.

He attended Community College of Philadelphia and Temple University. Stephen J. Agostini Philadelphia Budget Director. Stephen J. Agostini has spent over 20 years providing city, state, and federal governments and agencies with leadership and counsel on budgets, economic development, and general management. The majority of his career has been spent preparing budgets and managing the finances for numerous cities and counties in the U.S., including San Francisco and Milwaukee. A native of New York City, Mr. Agostini received his B.A from Harvard College and his Masters in Public Policy from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. He is married to Nicole Else-Quest, an assistant professor at Villanova University, and is the proud father of Raeka Zoraida, who was born at Pennsylvania Hospital in 2007. Prior to joining the City, Mr. Agostini served as the Chief Financial Officer and Director of Administration for the Economics and Statistics Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. Director of Multicultural Affaires, City of Philadelphia. Izzy Colon has over 35 years of experience in city government and the non-profit sector with a focus on policy analysis, non-profit management, and community advocacy. He was appointed by Mayor Michael Nutter in 2008 to serve as the City of Philadelphia’s Director of Multicultural Affairs. His role is taking the lead to initiate policies and strategies to improve accessibility of city services to language and cultural minorities throughout the city. Recently, Colon served as Director of the Eastern North Philadelphia Youth Services Coalition. Before 2004 he was the Chief of Staff for then Philadelphia Councilman Angel Ortiz. He earned a degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton, and completed his graduate work for an MA in Public Administration at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
Alfredo Calderon Executive Director ASPIRA, Inc. of Pennsylvania. Alfredo Calderon does his work efficiently and shuns the spotlight. His dedication and focus is directed to ASPIRA, a nationwide organization concentrated on the education of young Latinos. He learned to be focused while in the military, where he served many years, before leaving to become an educator. Under his leadership, ASPIRA of Pennsylvania has grown to become the leading early educational agent in the Latino community in the region, running two Carther Schools: Eugenio Maria De Hostos, and Antonia Pantoja, both in the heart of the Latino community in Philadelphia.

Angel Cruz Pennsylvania State Representative. The only Latino elected to the Pennsylvania House, he is State Representative for District 180, covering a large part of North Philadelphia. In four terms of service, he has brought much-needed investments to the Latino community. His fight for revitalization efforts and increased financial support for health and economic development projects has left a visible legacy in the 180th Legislative District. He graduated from North East Catholic High School. Cruz also is Democratic ward leader for the city’s 7th Ward. Cruz serves on the board of the Kensington Independence Civic Association and is cochairman of the 25th Police Department Advisory Committee.
Angel Fuentes New Jersey Assemblyman, President Camden city Council. Fuentes, who as a councilman represents Camden’s Fourth Ward, was recently elected to the New jersey Assembly, on behalf of the 5th Legislative District, which includes the City of Camden. He is committed to advocacy for social justice, and strong laws against crime and violence in the city, considered one of the poorest small cities in America. Fuentes earned his degree in Philosophy from Saint John Vianney College and Seminary, from Miami. Fuentes has been President of the City Council since December 2000 and has received numerous awards for his public service.

Julio Guridy Allentown Councilman. Born in the Dominican Republic, Julio Guridy earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from East Stroudsburg University. He earned his Master’s Degree in Sociology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Julio presently sits on Council’s Community Development, Public Works, and Public Safety Committees. He also serves on Allentown Economic Development Corporation’s Executive Board. Julio has been a member of numerous community organizations in the Lehigh Valley and throughout Pennsylvania. He is Director of Compact Authorized Investment for the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. He operates Guridy’s Travel Agency in South Bethlehem, along with his wife.

Chief of Staff to School District of Philadelphia. Tomás Hanna was appointed Chief of Staff to School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman in October 2009. In June 2008, Mr. Hanna returned to The School District of Philadelphia to serve as the Chief of School Operations. In this position he oversaw several Deputy Offices, which provide direct support services to students, parents, and schools in grades Pre-K through 12. Previously, he served as Deputy Superintendent of Operations for Providence (Rhode Island) Public Schools, serving more than 24,000 students and 45 schools. For 18 years, Mr. Hanna served in other positions in The School District of Philadelphia. He was also a principal at Willard and Sheppard Elementary Schools and Kensington High School, schools with culturally diverse student populations. Mr. Hanna holds a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education from the University of Puerto Rico, a Master of Arts in Bilingual/Bicultural Studies from LaSalle University, and is a Broad Superintendent’s Academy Fellow.

Angel Luis Ortiz Lawyer, civic leader. Angel Ortiz earned is degree in Sociology and Political Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico and his Law Degree from Columbia University. Ortiz, a Philadelphia City Councilman for 19 years, was well known for sponsoring very progressive bills, and always been a civil rights advocate for citizens and immigrants. Through his 19 years in office, Ortiz kept an open-door policy to assist anyone in need of help. Ortiz was the first person who hired the current Philadelphia Mayor Mike Nutter to City Council. Today he advises closely the Mayor in public issues affecting the diverse communities in the city.

Tomás Hanna
Abogado, líder cívico. Angel Ortiz estudió Sociología y Ciencias Políticas en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, y se graduó de abogado en Columbia University. Concejal de Filadelfia durante 19 años, se destacó por apoyar proyectos de ley progresistas y liberales. Ortiz siempre ha apoyado las causas de justicia social de inmigrantes y ciudadanos en Filadelfia. Durante sus 19 años como Concejal, mantuvo sus puertas abiertas para cualquier ciudadano en busca de ayuda. Ortiz fue quien primero empleó en el Concejo de Filadelfia al actual alcalde de la ciudad Mike Nutter. Hoy se desempeña como un asesor independiente para el alcalde en temas candentes que afectan a las diversas comunidades de la ciudad.

In 1995, he was appointed Executive Director of the Child Psychiatry Center (CPC) in Philadelphia. In 1997 Tony assumed his current position as the Executive Director of Children’s Crisis Treatment Center - a provider of comprehensive mental health services to children and their families. Under his leadership CCTC expanded six-fold, to 275 employees, an annual budget of $13 million, and a service of 16 programs. Valdes is the President of the Board of Concilio. He has a MBA in Health & Medical Services Administration from Widener University.

Johnny Irizarry SRC Board member, Director of La Casa Latina at UPenn. Johnny has been involved in education all his career. Currently serves as the only Latino member of the School Reform Commission, the board of the School District of Philadelphia. In his day job, he runs La Casa Latina, the center for Latino students attending the University of Pennsylvania. Previously, he directed The Lighthouse, a community- based organization in North Philadelphia. Johnny is a tireless advocate for education, the arts, social justice and civil rights. A former Principal of the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community Bilingual Charter School, and also Nueva Esperanza Charter High School, he is also a former Executive Director of Taller Puertorriqueño.

Abelardo (Ab) Lechter President and founder of Lefa International of King of Prussia, PA. Lefa International acts as a representative of several foreign companies in the United States. It also identifies investment opportunities and participates in joint ventures in Latin America. Prior to founding Lefa, Lechter was President of Mowlem USA. Abelardo is a member of the Board of Directors of IMA S.A., the largest furniture company in Colombia and Ritchi S.A., a manufacturer of pantyhose and a retailer of apparel products in South America. He is a past President, and currently serves as Chairman of the Board, of the Pan American Association of Philadelphia. Abelardo was born and raised in Colombia. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. in Management. He is married to Lynne Lechter, an attorney, who practices in Montgomery County.

Nilda Iris Ruiz President and CEO of Asociacion Puertorriqueños en Marcha (APM). Founded in 1970, APM is a Latino-based health, human services and community development organization. Since Ms. Ruiz’s arrival 5 years ago, APM has embarked on a dynamic, new course which includes a full agency restructuring that maximizes the full potential of the agency’s human and capital resources. In 2008, the agency was named one of Hispanic Business Magazine’s Top 25 Hispanic Nonprofits in the Nation - was again accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Ms. Ruiz is a Mayoral Appointee to the Philadelphia City Planning Commission, and also served as Co-Chair of recently elected Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s Transition Team. Prior to APM she worked for the Nacional Council of La Raza, in Washington D.C.

Guillermo Salas, Jr. President, and co-founder HACE. Guillermo (Bill) Salas, Jr. has devoted his career to helping others through his activities in community economic development, and advocacy over 30 years. In 1985 Bill Salas became the driving force behind the Hispanic Association of Contractors and Enterprises HACE (Founder), a local nonprofit community economic development corporation. Completed HACE projects are valued at over $75 million; they include commercial revitalization, real estate development of affordable housing among others. The Main Street project is one of HACE’s principal programs, which is in charge of revitalization for the historic Latino area known as El Bloque de Oro, on north 5th Street in Philadelphia.

Nicholas Torres President, Congreso de Latinos Unidos. Nick Torres was appointed President by the Board of Directors in September 2001, after proving his skills as an effective administrator, systems thinker, educator and therapist in the Division of Children and Youth Services. He holds a M.Ed. in Counseling Education from the University of Texas at Austin. Under Torres’ leadership, Congreso is establishing itself as the leading organization regarding Workforce Development Initiatives with a Latino community-based CareerLink, and a Neighborhood Center focused on transitioning participants off the welfare roles. He founded and chairs the Eastern North Philadelphia Youth Services Coalition (ENPYS). Congreso is also helping the community development of the emerging Mexican population in South Philadelphia, among other programas.

Ruben Amaro Jr. Senior Vice President and General Manager Philadelphia Phillies Ruben Amaro, Jr. assumed his current position of Senior Vice President and General Manager in November 2008 after serving as Assistant General Manager for 10 seasons. After being selected by the Angels in the 11th round of the 1987 draft, Ruben made his major league debut with the club in 1991. Following that season, he was traded to his hometown Phillies, where he spent five of his final seven big league seasons (1992-93, 96-98). Ruben played for both the 1993 NL Champion Phillies and the 1995 AL Champion Indians. In 1996, he ranked third among NL pinch-hitters with a .387 average. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Ruben was a batboy for the Phillies from 1980-83 when his father, Ruben Amaro Sr., a former shortstop with the club, was First Base Coach. In 1987, he earned a BS degree in human biology from Stanford University and was a member of the 1987 NCAA Baseball Championship team. Amaro and his father, Ruben Sr., are the only father-son combination to ever play for the Phillies. Under his tenure, the Phillies won two consecutive NL pendants, and a world Championship in 2008.

Fernando E. Armstrong Regional Director, Philadelphia Regional Census Center. Fernando E. Armstrong, Regional Director of the Philadelphia Region, is a native of Puerto Rico, where in 1978 he began his tenure with the Bureau of the Census. During this 31 year career he has managed three Decennial Censuses and surveys in the Atlanta, New York and Philadelphia Regional Offices as well as Puerto Rico. In April 1998, he was appointed Regional Director for the Philadelphia Region. Mr. Armstrong attained a Bachelors of Art degree in Political Science from The Catholic University in Puerto Rico. For his outstanding efforts in employing and developing careers for minorities, he received the Census Bureau’s Equal Employment Opportunity Award in 1986 and, in 1987, the Philadelphia Federal Executive Board awarded him the Hispanic Employment Program Achievement Award. In 1992, he was awarded the prestigious Bronze Medal Award of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Pedro A. Cortes Pennsylvania Secretary of State since 2003. Pedro A. Cortés is the first confirmed Hispanic Cabinet member in Pennsylvania history. He was nominated as Secretary of the Commonwealth by Governor Edward G. Rendell on April 2, 2003. The Secretary is a member of the Board of Property, the Board of Finance and Revenue, the State Athletic Commission, the Navigation Commission for the Delaware River, and the Pennsylvania Municipal Retirement Board. The Secretary is the keeper of the Great Seal of the Commonwealth, and is also the Commonwealth’s Chief Election Official. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts, a Master in Public Administration from Penn State University and a Law Degree from Penn State Dickinson School of Law. He also holds a certificate in Public Sector Human Resources Management from Penn State University. He was recently elected as President of the National Association of Secretaries of State NASS, the first Hispanic to receive such an honor. A native of Puerto Rico, Secretary Cortés has lived in Harrisburg since 1990.

Rev. Luis Cortés, Jr. President of Nueva Esperanza Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Spanish Harlem, Rev. Luis Cortés credits his childhood experiences, a stable family life and the Latino faith community for his many successes. He has devoted his life to empowering others to acquire economic stability, so they may also encourage their family and community to achieve that same goal. He graduated with honors from City College, NY, earned a Masters of Divinity as an Urban Theology Fellow from Union Theological Seminary, and an MS in Economic Development from New Hampshire College. The Philadelphia operations of Nueva Esperanza include education for Latinos at their charter high school Esperanza Academy, and Esperanza College, the first Latino college in Pennsylvania; homebuilding, rehabilitation, and mortgage counseling for Latino families; and employment training programs and workforce development for all residents in the North Philadelphia community. Rev. Cortés was featured as one of Time magazine’s “25 Most Influential Evangelicals” (January, 2005). He started the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast every year in Washington D.C., an event that is attended by the President and other high officers, who come to pray and pay respect to the Latino community.

María D. Quiñones-Sánchez Councilwoman - Philadelphia City Council District 7. With nearly 80% of the vote, on November 6, 2007, Maria made history by becoming the first Latino elected to a district City Council seat and the first Latina to serve on the Philadelphia City Council. She is a veteran activist with over 23 years of public and volunteer service. She has advocated tirelessly for economic development, women’s and workers’ rights, family wages, voter registration, health care availability and other issues of importance to Philadelphia and Commonwealth residents and communities. Quiñones-Sánchez has served as the Regional Director for the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA), serving Pennsylvania and Delaware. Maria is a founding member of the Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Coalition. From June 1996 to June 2000 she served as the first female and youngest Executive Director of ASPIRA, the largest Latino educational institution in Pennsylvania. Maria is a graduate of Philadelphia public schools and completed the Masters in Human Services program at Lincoln University in 1992. She is married to Tomas Sanchez and they have two sons, Edgar and Tomasito.

Kenneth I. Trujillo President of the Board of the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce since February 2006. A member of Trujillo Rodriguez & Richards, LLC, he returned to the Firm after serving as the City Solicitor of Philadelphia for two years. Mr. Trujillo was born in Espanola, New Mexico and raised in Durango, Colorado. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1986. Kenneth I. Trujillo is active locally and nationally in civic and business matters. He is the First Vice Chair of the National Council of La Raza Board of Directors and Chair of the Board of Directors of Congreso de Latinos Unidos. In addition, he is the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Health Partners, serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of the Arts and on the Temple University Health System Board of Overseers.
