What’s up, Blue Devils ? It’s August! Time flies when you’re having fun at service events :) As you probably know, we’re about to start the busiest, buzziest, most festive time of the Key Club: the Fall Season! With club recruitment, Region Training Conference, and of course, Fall Rally North right around the corner! This is, arguably, the most important part of the year. That doesn’t come for free, though. Whether you’re a member or an officer, it’s YOUR turn to step up and show the world why Key Club means so much to you. Embody our core values, not only now, but throughout the rest of your Key Club life and beyond. Be a leader by taking initiative at events. Show that you care by continuing to serve the community. Build your character by being a good role model and learning from others. And of course, embrace others with inclusivity by welcoming new faces and new ideas into your Key Club journey. Make sure to keep an open mind and attend as many of these major events as possible! Do your part in recruiting new members! Try to bring at least one friend with you to a meeting or an event. A LETTER FROM YOUR DNE
Hey Blue Devils ! School’s almost starting up, but more importantly, the fall season !! As Justin said, this is the buzziest and most festive time of the term. I can’t believe summer is almost over, but I hope you all made the most out of yours ! I think the Region 9 Olympics were my Key Club summer moment; I was able to meet so many of you guys and make new friends, and I had so much fun. I highly recommend going next year if you weren’t able to attend (I’ll try to sneak in next year even though I’ll have graduated by then). In this issue, I’ve included a new segment at the very end that allows you to know what the DLT is up to and what our jobs are like. I’ve also started including a monthly recognition report, so make sure you’re doing your very best to serve your community as much as you can; you might be Member of the Month in the future !! As always, make sure you’re attending DCMs and DWSs. On top of that, since it is also recruitment season, bring some friends to Key Club meetings at your school! DON’T FORGET TO PAY YOUR DUES !!!! Key Clubbers from all around the East Bay gathered in Alameda on July 14th for the third annual Region 9 Olympics. The most highly anticipated Key Club event of the summer season, Region 9 Olympics is a social/bonding fundraiser that usually involves games, obstacle courses, and/or scavenger hunts. Members were each put into a team led by a Region 9 District Board Member. This year, the “Grand Prix Tournament” themed event was divided into five teams: Team Luigi, led by D2N LTG Tina Lin; Team Toad, led by D2S LTG Vivian Luong; Team Princess Daisy, led by D8 LTG Katrina Sacluti; Team Princess Peach, led by D26N LTG Courtney Sanchez; Team Mario, led by D26S LTG Justin Tang; and Team Yoshi, led by District Governor Jonathan Lum. Games this year included fast-paced obstacle course relays, trivia challenges, sponge relay races, Dragon Tails, Photo Frame, and of course, team spirit battles. Teams also participated in a photo challenge, in which bonus points were awarded for completing tasks such as recording spirit cheers and spelling out the word “TEAM” using their bodies. All funds from the event went to the Pediatric Trauma Program.

by Carissa Zhu, Campolindo On Saturday June 9th, Key Clubbers from Division 26 North and South volunteered at the annual Chron’s and Colitis take steps walk. To be honest, I don’t think any of us really knew what Chron’s disease was before the walk, besides the fact that it had something to do with the digestive system, and was a disease. Nevertheless, many of us showed up bright and early on Saturday morning, eager to serve. As we arrived at the venue, we were greeted by a bright
orange balloon arc, and handed a bright orange
t-shirt. After helping with setup and registration, we were given pom-poms and cowbells and sent to stations along the walk to cheer on the participants. We split up into smaller groups and were able to cheer on participants along the way! As key clubbers we pride ourselves on our spirit, and it was exciting to be able to share that spirit with our community. It was super fun to cheer together, and seeing the reactions of participants made waking up early on a Saturday morning worth it.

On Tuesday June 19th, Ohana from one of the best schools in Division 26 South, Campolindo, volunteered at the Concord food bank to help sort and organize food for the people who struggle to provide enough for their own families. Considering how fortunate we all are to be blessed with the lifestyle of not having to worry if we have enough to eat for the day, it was a huge pleasure to help out at this food bank to provide that opportunity for the families who aren’t as fortunate and rely on the food bank to get their groceries. Finding the location to begin our volunteer work was a bit challenging, as the warehouse was gigantic and we lowkey kinda didn’t pay attention to some of the signs, but we knew we found our way to the entrance when we were met with the countless number of food boxes and other volunteers that were also there to help out. A majority of the time was spent bagging onions, which really wasn’t that bad. Plus after about 30 minutes, I personally believe that I became a master bagger of onions, as I was able to bag roughly 2 bags of 5 onions per minute (yeah I know, pretty amazing isn’t it, definitely something to add on my college apps). I had a great time bagging onions with my fellow key clubbers as we were able to just talk and enjoy ourselves, even eventually making it into a competition of who could bag the most onions (pretty sure I won) all while helping out our community at the same time. The only downside of it was the lingering onion smell that stayed on my clothes after I left, but considering it was an easy fix with a quick shower, I would say that it was definitely a good use of my Tuesday night.

On Saturday June 30th key clubbers from Campolindo and Amador Valley had the opportunity to volunteer at the Nichi Bei Soy and Tofu Festival in San Francisco. As Service Projects Coordinator, this served as one of the first joint service events of my term so I was both nervous and excited. I wasn’t sure what to expect of the Soy and Tofu festival and was curious to see what it looked like- I was extremely shocked to see the huge level of production behind it. The festival was put on by the Nichi Bei foundation which Eunice, the president of Amador Valley, discovered was a nonprofit media organization that sheds a light on Japanese American experience. Thankfully the festival was moved inside since it was weirdly both hot and windy outside. Throughout the day there was entertainment, cooking demonstrations, and indoor activities that festival goers enjoyed as they walked through the complex. Key Clubbers cut up tofu, offering both free samples and selling them at booths, sold t-shirts, cut up Cliff Bars (whose third most prevalent ingredient is surprisingly soy!), and sold eyeglass cases. Towards the end of the night we decided to take a group picture and so I asked one of the people who I had gotten to know that day to take it for us. We took a normal one and then did the 26their reaction was instantaneous. Turns out they were also key clubbers from Lowell High School in San Francisco. Overall, this event exceeded my expectations, we had fun, took home a lot of free tofu and soy products, and made new friends.

by Lauren Hlavac, Campolindo Key Club members from Campolindo, Acalanes, and Miramonte High School came together on July 4th to work the Kiwanis 4th of July Jumpies Event at the Moraga Commons. In this event members were assigned to supervise the children playing in the bouncy houses. In addition, Key

Club members were also responsible for collecting tickets from the children as they entered the bouncy houses. I enjoyed working this event because it enabled me to see a side of my community that I would otherwise not have seen. Growing up in Moraga, I had heard about the
Moraga Commons Fourth of July event for years but never had the chance to experienced it myself. The positive energy and happiness on this day was extremely uplifting. It was enjoyable interacting with the children of the community, most of them were extremely patient and well mannered. My
fellow volunteers and I enjoyed asking the children questions, such as what grade they were in, to keep them entertained while they waited in line. Furthermore, working this event was particularly special since it was the fourth of July. It was nice to give back to my community on such a special day.

by Adriana Derksen, Campolindo On June 23rd, Division 26 South helped at the Relay for Life at Dublin High School. The 100° evening heat took most of the energy out of us, but we were still eager to help. We each signed in, received a stylish new t-shirt, and were sent to our respective positions. I worked in the snack shack for most of the night, scooping snow cones and pouring nacho cheese to give to participants, some of whom had been walking around the Dublin High track for hours by the time evening came. At the same time, other members helped participants sign up, took down tents for the night, or helped give out prizes. After this, we helped to add glow sticks to each of hundreds of paper bags decorated to celebrate a loved ones’ battle with or victory over cancer. It was fascinating to walk around and see all the colorful bags and know that each glow stick we placed was helping to both figuratively and literally bring light to the difficulties of cancer. In all honesty, most of the event was slow with little to do, as there were many more Key Clubbers anxious to serve snow cones than participants lined up to buy snow cones. However, this slow pace gave me the opportunity to talk to and bond with other members that I only ever saw at Key Club events. This sense of community, where every member is friendly and ready to talk regardless of whatever else they are doing, is one of the main reasons I love Key Club so much, and it made the 100% worth it!
by Olivia Hom, Campolindo On Sunday June 3 most of the officers and some of the members of Division 26 South met at Dublin High School for Officer Training Conference. OTC included the monthly DCM and helped people learn more about Key Club and the various office positions. Officer Training Conference (OTC) started with a few short presentations about Key Club in General. The first presentation, Key Club 101, covered what key club is, where it is, key club’s structure, and the core values among other things. The next presentation was on the Kiwanis Family and went over the various branches of Kiwanis and their differences and similarities. The final general presentation was on Safekey which refers to the standard key clubbers must hold them to online as all of us are representatives of Key Club International. After a short break for the DCM, everyone rotated to hear more about each officer position. These presentations were covered in a Round Robin Style and everyone was split up into random groups. The presentations covered each of the 5 officer positions,: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and editor, in depth. At the end of OTC, everyone was aware of what each position consists of and were enabled to better help their fellow officers. Past Events

Hey Blue Devils! I’m introducing this new segment to the newsletter where you can see what your DLT is currently working on & what our jobs are like. I’m really enjoying putting together publications for everyone to see and hopefully you’ve been enjoying reading through them as well. It’s definitely very time-consuming and deadlines are strict, but it’s what I enjoy doing. If you have a passion for graphic design I highly recommend running for this position in the future.

So far my job has been very interactive and fun! It really encourages me to go to more events and do what I love doing! Sometimes there is so much stuff going on at events in different places which is why it’s very helpful when members take visuals. Hi everyone! DTE Jielin here this month, my tasks were to promote R9 Olympics, update social media, and finish a draft of our Blue Devils website. So far, I’ve been really inspired by other divisions’/small businesses’ websites for design and layout building the website has been pretty tedious but hopefully it turns out well! As for social media, it’s pretty easy because it’s just a routine and I set reminders to post certain graphics that are sent to me. That’s my update!

Last month, I was able to attend my first Kiwanis DCM in Martinez along with Ltg. Justin Tang. At the meeting I was able to recognize multiple parallels between Kiwanis and Key Club, such as the evident leadership and passion for service! Creating presentations and speeches to share Kiwanis’s work with my peers has been the most rewarding part of my job. I’m really excited for what the rest of my term as KFF Chair has in store!

Heyheyhey blue devils! I hope you’re all enjoying your summers! It’s your spirit coordinator Chris Sohn here with a couple of spirit updates!
