SOPHIE-MAI PEMBERTON

As a photographic arst, Sophie processes an existence through a peculiar eye. In the eye of an ausc individual, this narrave explores personal trauma through a relaonship between memory and photography. Sophie ulizes archival and contemporary imagemaking techniques to produce the potenal of photography to be a therapeuc tool. Through quesoning the aesthecs of memory and trauma, Sophie explores their connecon to the fundamental context of society. This project is a fugive reflecon of past trauma and the road to recovery. A collecon of all that is good and bad. Through a vessel gripping the intense source of pain and the truth of the past, present, and future of memories. Sophie ulizes the contextual bases of the ‘Punctum’ a source explored within Roland Barthes’s seminal text Camera Lucida (1980), enacng a reflecon within a traumac photograph. In this essence, that bruise or sng is defined within photography. Through the juxtaposion between images, Sophie has developed a process of construcon within the concept of creang a book. Using tradional analog processing, Sophie translates the state of a woman’s expression through the concept of me filled with complexies of space and history. This methodology has allowed Sophie to portray the layering of mulple idenes defined within her upbringing. Times through her analog and contemporary image-making have given meaning to self-reflecon. She is creang a rupture in habitual ways of seeing.
