Sebas�anRiffoMontenegro(San�ago, 1980)isaChileanar�stwithabackground indesignandcommunica�onsfromthe UniversityofthePacific.A�eralongcareer inadver�singdesign,hebeganpursuinghis ar�s�cprac�ceinaself-taughtmannerin 2017,developingabodyofworkthatspans realis�cpain�ng,digitalart,andinstalla�on.

Hisworkexploreshowthecrea�onofsocial beliefs—whetherreligious,ideological, cultural,oreconomic—hasproducedfilters throughwhichweexperiencerealityand shapeourbehavior.Whilethesefiltersoffer aframeworkandasenseofbelonging,they canalsoleadtoagradualdisconnec�onfrom thenaturalworld,relega�ngittothe backgroundorinstrumentalizingitin accordancewithsocialimpera�ves.

TimClarkeisavisualar�stwhoseprac�ceis rootedinalifelongpursuitofcapturing awe—bothinnatureandhumannature.At theageof14,hediscoveredabookon LeonardodaVinciandwasprofoundly moved.Inspiredbytheemo�onaldepthand brillianceinLeonardo’swork,hebeganto wonderifhe,too,couldevokethesame senseofwonderthroughart.Thatmoment markedthebeginningofa50-yearjourney devotedtocrea�ngartworksthatcelebrate aweinitsmanyforms.

Clarkebeganhisar�s�cdevelopmentby copyingworksbyLeonardoandstudying photographs,aprocessthatplayedavital roleinbuildinghistechnicalskills.However, ashisabili�esgrew,sodidhisawareness thathisworkwasnotyetfullycapturingthe depthofawehesoughttoexpress.

Aturningpointcamewhenhebegan drawingdancerswithlearningdifficul�es. Thisexperiencewaspivotalinhisar�s�c matura�on.Bothheandthedancerswere, ashedescribesit,"ripeatthesame�me." Theirbrilliant,endlessarrayofintriguing movementsprovidedhimwithasubject throughwhichhecouldfinallyaccessand expressthesenseofawethathadinspired himfromthebeginning.Clarkeremains deeplygratefultothosedancersforhelping himreachthiscrea�veandemo�onal depthinhiswork.

A: Oneofmyearliestmemoriesisdrawing withmytwinbrother.Wewouldspendhours onthefloorwithpencilsandpaper, completelyabsorbedinwhatweweredoing. Itwasourfavouritewaytopassthe�me,and withoutrealisingit,thosemomentsbecame thefounda�onforeverythingthatcame a�er—forbothofus.

Inhighschool,Ichosetostudyartand specialisedinsculpture.Ilovedbeingableto expressmyselfinadifferentway,towork withmyhandsandexplorenewmaterials.It mademefallinlovewithartalloveragain.

Afewyearslater,Ibeganexperimen�ngwith oilpain�ng,andthat’swhensomethingtruly clicked.Thelayering,thelight,thewaya figurecouldslowlyemergefromthecanvas— itfeltlikediscoveringabeau�fulnew language.

A: BeingItalian,artwaseverywherearound megrowingup.I’vealwaysfeltdeeply connectedtoclassicalandRenaissance works.Iwasfascinatedbythewayar�sts capturedthehumanform—theircurves,their movement,thesenseoflifeintheirbodies.I thinkthatinfluences�llresonatesinmy pain�ngs.

Butmaybethebiggestinfluencehasbeenmy mum.She’saseamstress,andsinceIwasa child,Iwasalwayscuriousaboutwhatshe wasdoing.Iusedtotouchthefabrics,help herfoldthem,observeeverypa�ernand texture.Thatconnec�ontofabricstayed withmeandbecameoneofthemost importantelementsofmywork.Forme,

fabricismemory,iden�ty,andfeeling.Itis muchmorethanmaterial.

A: I’vealwaysstruggledtoexpressmy emo�onsineverydaylife.I’mquite introverted,andforyearsIwouldjuststay inmyroom,pain�ngquietlyforhours, avoidingtoomuchsocialinterac�on. Pain�ngbecamemywaytospeak.Itgave methespacetofeelandtobevulnerable.

Inmypain�ngs,Itrytoshowtheemo�ons Ihideinreallife.Iwanttoexpressthatwe areallhuman,andweallcarrysomething inside.Some�mesit’spain,some�mesit’s fear,some�mesit’sjusttheneedtobe understood.Iwanttoshowthatwedon’t needtobeashamedofthoseparts.They arepartofourstrength.
