In The Know Your indispensable guide to what’s going on where you live A Fantastic Line Up Of Music, Dance And Laughter Headed To The Auditorium

T

here’s a terrific line up of shows for fans of musical theatre on the way to the Grimsby Auditorium over the next few months including of course the Christmas pantomime – always a highlight of the season. This year it’s Beauty And The Beast, (images above and right) featuring comedian Mark Little (that’s Joe Mangel from Neighbours to you and me), Emmerdale favourite Frazer Hines and Lee Brennan from 911. It also has the traditional appearance by a jet from the Red Arrows (yes really) which is a sight not to be missed as it swoops low over the heads of the audience! Elsewhere on the calendar, it’s a particularly strong season for music and dance with local favourite and Strictly champion Joanne Clifton appearing in Flashdance: The Musical from 16th-20th October. In the new year, it’s the turn of Kevin Clifton to revisit his home town as he appears in Rock Of Ages (image right) – the ultimate 80s rock’n’roll musical - from 5th-9th February. There’s plenty of variety on offer including shows as diverse as Swan Lake performed by the Russian State Ballet and Opera House on November 15th and Broadway And Beyond on November 24th, featuring a selection of fantastic show tunes, guaranteed to set your toes tapping. ABSOLUTELY BARKING! THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES AT XMAS Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most celebrated Sherlock Holmes story gets a gloriously funny makeover in this “wonderfully barking spoof” by Steven Canny and John Nicholson for comedy team Peepolykus. When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on his estate, with a look of terror still etched on his face and the paw prints of a gigantic hound beside his body, the great detective Sherlock Holmes is summoned from Baker Street. Written for a cast of three who play multiple roles, this version premiered at the West Yorkshire Playhouse where it broke box office records before touring nationally and transferring to the West End. Don’t you dare miss it! More information can be found at www.caxtontheatre.com. Tickets can be purchased via the website or from NELC Tourist Information Centres on 01472 323111

CYCLING

AFTER A GREAT YEAR FOR BRITISH CYCLING

THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO BE OUT ON YOUR BIKE! It’s not so very long ago that most people in the UK would have been hard pressed to name a British cycling champion but nowadays there are lots of them, both in the velodrome and on the road and cycling is enjoying a golden age. The past twelve months have seen extraordinary success for UK riders in the Grand Tours with three different riders winning the biggest races of all – Chris Froome in the Giro D’Italia, Geraint

Thomas in the Tour de France and Simon Yates in the Vuelta e Espana – and you only have to drive through the Wolds on a weekend to see what a boom time the sport is enjoying locally. Of course we can’t all be champions but there’s no doubt that cycling is one of the best possible ways to stay fit, healthy and young at heart, so don’t hold back, get yourself in the saddle, get on that road and ride like you’re winning le Tour d’Irby.!

Poems From The Swamp is a new collection from local author Josie Moon which finds her using a cast of disparate characters to produce a series of works discussing the possibility of escaping from our own personal swamps. It's a collection that explores themes of myth, psychology, the esoteric, liminality and worlds within worlds. However, the Zeitgeist is also present and the dark forces of the real world are explored: mobbing, violence and terror. Copies can be obtained from www.josiemoon.co.uk

Five Good Reasons For Having Your Chimney Swept Regularly says Paul Baker of Brushed Up 1. AVOIDING CHIMNEY FIRES At this time of year the fire service responds to large numbers of domestic chimney fires. Don't become another statistic. Regular sweeping drastically cuts down the risk of chimney fire. 2. AVOIDING SOOT FALLS Even a small amount of soot can create a whole load of mess resulting in big cleaning bills for carpets and upholstery. And if the opening of a stove door and the disturbance to airflow causes such a fall the result can be flames shooting out into the operators face. Better safe than sorry.

23

4. TROUBLE SHOOTING A qualified Sweep will assess all aspects of your appliance and chimney system. He will be able to inform you of any problems and potential dangers, usually long before they become a major issue. 5. PEACE OF MIND Should you be unfortunate enough to suffer damage because of a chimney fire your insurance company will almost certainly want to know that you have taken precautions to avoid the chimney fire in the first place. A certified chimney sweep will issue you with a sweeping certificate that insurance companies recognise as proof that your chimney has been swept to the national standard. So there you go. Look after your chimney and it will look after you in return. It’s got to be good value!

3. PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT Many modern solid fuel installations use flexible stainless steel liners within the existing brick chimney. Warranties on these liners are normally state which fuels you can use and how often you must have it swept. A typical liner that is not swept regularly burning smokeless fuel will have a life expectancy of as little as 3 to 5 years. Check your warranty to find your sweeping interval and what types of fuel your liner is suitable for.

TOP BLUES BAND BRING AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE TO SIGNHILLS ACADEMY Fans of blues and soul were treated to a fantastic evening of music at Signhills Academy on September 25th when Xander And The Peace Pirates played a very special gig in the school’s auditorium. Having spent five years as house band at Liverpool’s Cavern Club

Xander and the Peace Pirates have established a reputation as one of the best British bands around and their combination of rock, blues and soul has seen them share stages with the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Bon Jovi, Eric Bibb, Robben Ford, and Manfred Mann, establishing

themselves as one of the most exciting bands on the circuit. Lead singer and guitarist Keith Xander was born without a right arm below the elbow and plays guitar using a prosthesis and hook with a pick attached at the end but he hasn’t let that stop him from becoming a virtuoso musician. The band spent the day at the school working with pupils and explaining to them how important it is to not be held back by disabilities before performing in the evening to an appreciative audience.

Sing for pleasure and let the music out! Humber Belles meet on Thursdays at Wendover Hall from 7.15pm to 9.30pm and from November 1st we are holding a series of five open rehearsals to learn two new songs for Christmas. Interested? You just need enthusiasm and the ability to sing in tune, as learning materials will be provided. Visit our website, email humberbelles25@gmail.com or call 01472 695836 to arrange a visit to one of our rehearsals - it’s time to let all that music out for everyone to hear! Hope to see you soon!

gaining self-confidence and independence and acquiring valuable study skills.” So if you feel that your child might benefit from a little extra help the Kumon way give Sarah a call and see what she suggests because a little extra confidence can make a whole world of difference!

RECYCLING

RECYCLING: WE DO IT BECAUSE IT MATTERS! T

here was a time when many of us thought that recycling was a bit of a fad, something that would disappear as the novelty wore off but nowadays we’ve come to understand that it’s an issue that matters profoundly and those brightly coloured boxes by the front door are here to stay.

Of course if you’ve got metal to dispose of then there’s money to be had from a merchant like our friends at Stokesley Metals, but for pretty much everything else recycling is the responsibility of North East Lincolnshire Council and thanks to their efforts in recent years our area has gained a reputation as one of the cleanest and greenest in the

country. It’s not just bin collections of course. The recent Skip It events have attracted thousands of local residents to bring their rubbish and hundreds of tons of waste have been collected and disposed of. As a result our streets, parks and alleyways are looking tidier and more hygienic So how good a recycler are you? Do you know what goes where in the boxes?

ON THE SOUTH BANK

Glass (green box) and paper (blue box) are pretty self explanatory but many of us get a bit confused about plastics. There are so many different kinds to choose from after all. Which can go in the orange box with the cans? We went along to one of the recent NELC roadshows and the advice is that if it looks like a bottle it can be recycled. You can recycle empty household aerosols and all household plastic bottles. Lids are okay too but no yogurt pots, film or plastic food boxes. Nothing from the shed either. So there you go. Nice and easy. And all the other plastics go in your green general refuse bin. You can find our more about local recycling at www.nelincs.gov.uk/ bins-waste-and-recycling
