PRIVATE PEACEFUL AT THE CAXTON THEATRE - REVIEW
W
e enjoyed an excellent evening on Friday 16th May when Private Peaceful played at The Caxton Theatre. The play is adapted from a novel for young people written by Sir Michael Morpurgo, the author responsible for War Horse among other works, and tells the story of Private Tommo Peaceful, a child volunteer during the First World War who is courtmartialled for insubordination during the battle of Ypres. When the play opens he is alone in the condemned cell, facing execution in the morning, and the play invites the audience to watch uneasily as he spends his last night alone in the darkness, acting out scenes from his own life. It’s a one-man show which placed considerable demands on actor John Ferguson, who delivered an excellent performance, switching deftly between
characters as he brought to life a host of people who had a formative influence on Peaceful’s life and who had helped to bring him to his present position. His Peaceful was brave but vulnerable, anxious to be treated as a man but still full of the anxieties of youth. It wasn’t not a comfortable watch, particularly when the central character chose to concentrate his gaze on one particular member of the audience and talk directly at them. At these moments you almost felt like you were there in the cell with him, looking on at moments of fear, humour, love and shame as he recalled key moments in his all too short existence; the death of his father, skinnydipping with his elder brother Charlie and Molly who later becomes Charlie’s wife, signing up for the war that everybody knew would be over by Christmas. One more big push, that was all that was needed.
For director Robert Till this play has been an ambition for several years and it was remarkable how, with a minimum of props and some clever lighting, he and his cast of one brought the story to life before our eyes. Whether seated on a straw bale or crouched behind an upturned bed that doubled as a trench Private Peaceful delivered a strong impression of the physical and mental discomforts of the soldier’s life and actor and director combined to transport us convincingly not just to the battlefield but to everyday life in rural Cornwall in the years before the conflict. The production benefitted from being performed, not in the main theatre, but in the more intimate setting of the downstairs Studio Bar, especially since a rethinking of the seating arrangements for such performances has made it a much more comfortable experience than in the past. Private Peaceful was as enthralling and moving a piece of theatre as I’ve seen in a long while and offered a fascinating insight into the lives of child soldiers in the First World War.
Putting A Girdle Round The Earth In About An Hour And Twenty Minutes One of the most beloved works of Victorian fiction, a favourite with children and adults alike, gets a fun and ingenious make over at The Caxton Theatre for the next week, when Around The World In 80 Days, based on the novel by Jules Verne and adapted by Laura Eason, sets sail. It’s a fast moving show, packed with laughter and adventure, that moves licketty split from one scene to another, racing from London to Cairo to India to Rangoon and beyond with barely a pause for breath or a check of the Bradshaw. In a nod to the good old days a set of elaborate signs and a large clock help us keep up to date with our heroes’ progress. A hard working cast take on
a host of characters, with multiple roles being indicated by a change of headwear or accent, something which director Gemma Dodds, for whom this is the third venture into directing on the main stage, was keen to take on. The many scene changes are assisted by the junior members of the cast, drawn from the ranks of the Caxton Youth Theatre, who at various times are required to function as stage shifters, parts of a boat and train, an elephant, native American marauders, and members of a travelling circus. Among the main cast George Mansfield is excellent as the punctilious and unflappable Phileas Fogg, while Mike Wilson is full of righteous indignation as his would be nemesis Inspector
Fix and Jo Moore is a charmingly manipulative Mrs Aouda. It is however Geraldine Godwin’s Passepartout who steals the show - prim and proper, wily and mischevious and as unmistakably French as Camembert, crossaints and jambes de grenouilles. Bravo. Alors. Sacre Bleu. Around The World In 80 Days is at the Caxton theatre from Saturday 8th June to Saturday 15th June. madness at market rasen
“It’s raining again ...” That got probably the biggest cheer of the evening although there was plenty more because Madness had come to all the way to Market Rasen and nobody was going to let a little bit of precipitation dampen their spirits. With a back catalogue of hits that includes favourites like Our House, Baggy Trousers and House Of Fun the boys are one of the most popular bands in the country and remarkably there are still six members of the classic Madness line up still playing together. Does this matter? I think it does. Because the band seem so at ease and happy in each other’s company on stage it feeds into the show, creating an atmosphere that’s seldom equalled by any other bands I’ve seen. Certainly the Rasen crowd, all fezzed up and nowhere to go but dancing had a great time at what must surely be one of the most popular of the Jockey Club Live events that we’ve enjoyed in recent years. Next up is soul guru Craig David, who plays the racecourse on Saturday 17th August. It’s definitely not a show to be missed and tickets are available via www. thejockeyclub.co.uk.
LOCAL COMEDY HERO TO BE CELEBRATED WITH A FILM, EXHIBITION AND SHOW One of Grimsby’s most famous sons, the legendary comedian Freddie Frinton is to be commemorated with a TV documentary, an exhibition and a show in partnership with Papa’s Fish & Chips at Cleethorpes Pier, on Friday 8th November. The project, made possible by National Lottery funding, will celebrate the life and work of the star who is a household name in Germany, with millions of viewers settling down each New Year to watch the cult classic TV sketch ‘Dinner for One’. It aims to inspire and inform local people not only about Freddie but also about our area’s rich history of seaside entertainment, music and comedy.

The St James Festival makes a welcome return this summer
T
here’s going to be plenty going on in and around Grimsby Minster this summer because they’re reviving the St James’ Festival, the much loved collaborative celebration of the arts held on and around the feast of St James’ in July. This festival will be a platform for celebrating our local talent in music, performance, art, crafts & making. It will also feature nationally acclaimed artists and groups. The festival will take place between 21st June and 21st July 2019, with a celebration day on Saturday 13th July which will be run in partnership
between Grimsby Minster, St James Square and Grimsby Top Town Market. Invitations have gone out to schools and colleges and to local music, dance and arts organisations and there promises to be something on the programme to appeal to everyone. There’s too much going on to list here, but you can check out the
festival’s social media for updates about a fantastic range of events, including a visit from the Britten Sinfonia with Mark Padmore ( image below) on Saturday 20th July which will feature, amongst other pieces, a performance of one of Britten’s lesser known works, The Company of Heaven.
Moonsongs The Peoples chats to poet Josie Moon about her current tour and plans for the future The Peoples: You obviously have tremendous enthusiasm for poetry. What makes it a special art form for you? And what can it offer to communities and individuals?
A Requiem was inspired by a cold wet night in November just before the annual remembrance commemoration. It was 2017 and there was much anticipation heading towards the centenary of the end of WW1. We've had some great guests here in Grimsby over the past year. Our current program ends in July with a showcase performance from the Hull Women of Words collective. The plan is to launch a new poetry initiative in the autumn with our local writers front and centre. There are poets I'd like to bring to Grimsby in 2020 as we've built a great reputation for hospitality and enjoyable events. I'd also like to thank the local poets and audience who've made Best Words and Words and Pictures so joyous and exciting over this past year. It's been truly collaborative and a real shared experience and I am proud of everyone who has taken part. And finally, how did you feel about the appointment of Simon Armitage as poet laureate? I think it was a good decision. He is a humane, urbane and decent human being. And his work is accessible but also learned and deeply felt. I think he will prove excellent in this role. LINCS INSPIRE CELEBRATE THE WORK OF LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS
M
any of the services on which we depend are now provided by volunteers so National Volunteers Week, which ran from June 1st to June 7th, was an important opportunity to recognise the efforts of those who give up their time to make life better for others and to say thank you for their endeavours throughout the year. On Friday 7th June, Lincs Inspire Library Services took the opportunity to recognise the contributions of its volunteers by offering them the
opportunity to attend a guided tour of the Grimsby Masonic Hall. Included among those being recognised were volunteers from Lincs Inspire’s Home Library Service, who provide monthly visits to housebound people and their carers who are unable to get to the library. Also acknowledged were the efforts of all those who volunteer their time to the local history photograph collection and those who support the local history group for visually impaired people.
The guided tour was preceded by a thank you speech from Lincs Inspire Chief Executive Sue Wells who expressed the community’s gratitude and appreciation. Jennie Cartwright, Libraries’ Development Officer, Lincs Inspire commented, “Our library volunteers are very generous with the time they give to support our services. FISHING HERITAGE CENTRE TO HOST FISHERMEN’S REUNION
E
x-fishermen from across North East Lincolnshire will be recognised at a reunion evening to be held at Grimsby’s Fishing Heritage Centre later this month. Organised by the centre and The Fishermen’s Mission, it is hoped that up to 200 extrawlermen will attend the event on Thursday 20th June, between 6pm and 10pm, to celebrate their part in the local fishing industry. Guests will have exclusive use of the centre and the Ross Tiger for
the evening and will enjoy guided talks, music and free food and refreshments. Councillor Callum Procter, portfolio holder for tourism, heritage and culture, said: “I’m thrilled this event is returning once again to honour these men in this way. Their part in the history and prosperity of this town is immense.” Entry to the centre has been free for local ex-trawlermen for many years, but the centre staff felt that the offer was not sufficiently well known, so
each fisherman who attends the event will be presented with a Skipper’s Ticket, giving them unlimited free admission to the centre and Ross Tiger and a 50 per cent discount to their families. Dave Ornsby, acting operations officer at the centre, said: “We’re delighted that the reunions have been such a success and that the strong relationship we have forged with the Fishermen’s Mission and Young’s Seafood has enabled such a special event for our local fishermen to take place. This will be our sixth year and we are keen to work closer with the Mission to acknowledge our former trawlermen and what they achieved for our town. The Trawlerman’s Night highlights that the centre is here for them and has people that think of them and respect their efforts.”
Susan Brown, the new superintendent at Grimsby’s Fishermen’s Mission, added: “Young’s Seafood have generously donated food for the night for the last five years and Dee Bee Wholesale have kindly supplied drinks at a supportive price for us on the night too. Their donation last year of a £50 prize for our raffle also helped to pay for a Christmas dinner for former fishermen that was kindly hosted at cost by Steel’s Corner House. A real community effort for supporting our former fishermen.” A limited number of tickets are available for the event from the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre. Call (01472) 323345 for details. Sometimes running is about more than just running. It can be about fitness, or weight loss, or testing yourself by pushing to the limits. Or it can be about raising money for good causes or being a good role model for your kids. Sometimes it’s just about getting out of the house and into the fresh air. Usually there’s a mixture of motivations at play, particularly when someone goes from being a non athlete to being a regular participant, doing ten milers and multi peak challenges like they were walks in the park. One person who has used running as a way of changing their life and raising cash for a great cause is our good friend Emma Middleton, Taiko Drummer, Youth Theatre organiser and now committed runner who has completed several remarkable challenges and is now setting her sights on the London Marathon 2020. We spoke to her and asked her what made her want to take up such a demanding discipline and effect so big a change in her life. The Peoples: Hi Emma. Tell us a bit about yourself. Emma: I run an organisation called Humber Taiko and I perform and teach Taiko drumming as well as other music & creative projects in the area. Taiko is Japanese style drumming which incorporates catchy rhythms, voice & choreography so it has helped me become fairly fit. I work in local schools, for the music service, at international festivals and I also perform - we have performed across Europe and I’m performing in Portland, Oregon this summer for a huge Taiko Festival. I have a very full on and active job so all of my training recently has enabled me to keep up with it all, as well as parenting! The Peoples: We've watched with interest on social media as your running career has developed from tentative beginnings to exuberant enthusiasm to fully fledged obsession. How long have you been running now and what got you started? Emma: I started in 2014, I’d never run before in fact I was the kid at school that would always have a note to excuse me from PE! I have a few friends from years back who have found it very surprising that I’m actually running now and enjoying sports & fitness, it’s quite funny how things change. I went down south to train with a company called Taiko Meantime whose members are all into fitness and endurance, they run every morning of the training so I knew that I would have to run with them. I did a couch to 5K plan but I only dared run late at night when no one could see me as I wasn’t confident. I managed to do all of the runs with the guys at the training though so I achieved my goal and tried to keep my running going after that. I did break my leg at one point though so had to put it all on hold at one point. The Peoples: What made you want to do it? Is there a tradition of running in your family? Emma: My dad ran the London Marathon in 2004 so I think he’s pretty pleased I’m giving it a go. I have vague memories of finding it quite amusing that he was going to run but I’m ashamed to say I actually didn’t pay much attention to him doing it at the time! My uncle ran with him dressed as Bob The Builder - there is no way I could get through a marathon in a huge costume so hats off to him for that. I will say that I’m pretty sure I’ll beat both their times though haha! My 9 year old daughter is far too cool to get too excited for me but I’m going to guess she actually is quite proud! I’ve heard her telling people about it and she has asked to go running with me. The Peoples: Is it something you completely enjoy or is working through the pain an important part of why you do it? Emma: I gradually started to enjoy it in the early days but then started to find it quite tricky and other than the Taiko training I never ran with anyone else. I joined the Grimsby & Cleethorpes Biggest Losers Fitness group because I wanted to get stronger. The group is run by Mike Burton who started the project as a weight loss competition, they raise loads of money for charity. The group has developed into a huge Health & Wellbeing team. Loads of people at the group met up for running regularly and I was encouraged to join in last summer, I soon got back into it and got fully hooked in a completely new way! I lost quite a bit of weight by training with the group too so I was soon running faster & further thanks to all of the brilliant coaches, mentors and friends at the group. We have taken on awesome challenges together such as the Lunacy 10K - an adventure & obstacle race, as well as the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge recently which was the hardest thing I’ve ever done (I am terrified of heights!)
The Peoples: What has been your biggest achievement so far? Emma: I said I was never interested in running further than 5K as I get bored but my ego soon got the better of me! The North Lincs Half Marathon in May was my first Half Marathon and I loved it so I ran the Doncaster Half Marathon a month later and shaved about 5 minutes off my time. The Yorkshire Three Peaks was an incredible achievement due to my awful fear of heights but it was great training to get strength and stamina in my legs. I also run with friends at sunrise in Cleethorpes several times a week which I think is an achievement every time we do it! The Peoples: And your long term goal? Emma: My long term goal is just to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle but I’ve been focused on the 2020 London Marathon to keep me going. I don’t know what happens after that. I’m aware that my running could be cut short at any moment if I get an injury or if I just get fed up! I think my back up will be learning to swim well, I’m not very good! So far I’ve been lucky that my body has been happy to run, I’ve had regular training and sports massages to check everything is ok. Back in April I was watching clips from the London Marathon and then just decided I had to do it, me and my partner both signed up for the ballot but then we decided to pursue charity places and just fully commit to it. He is running for the Meningitis Research Foundation in memory of his friends and I am running for Whizz-Kidz as I was so keen to support a children’s charity. The Peoples: What makes Whizz-Kidz a special charity for you? Emma: I applied to lots of different charities, I work in schools, we are keen on making music accessible for all children, and I wanted to raise money for children. I’ve been offered a couple of charity places but Whizz-Kidz actually phoned me after my application and we had a great talk about all of the work they do, transforming the lives of disabled children. I have found that by blogging and using social media I can connect with other runners, those who have done similar challenges and people who inspire me, motivate me. It’s a great way to share the journey. The Peoples: Well best of luck from us (not that we think that there’s a lot of luck involved) and we’ll be keeping an eye on your progress throughout the year and right up to next year’s main event!

If you’re a fan of hip hop and graffiti art then you need to make a date with the Cleethorpes Urban Art Festival 2019 which will take place at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August. It’s a free community event that offers a wide variety of activities including break dancing with Hello Hip Hop, parkour with Team Reality, live body art with Lincs Minx, a graffiti art and craft zone and a lego zone. There’ll also be loads of competitions, from sand castle building to photography, arts and craft stalls and demonstrations and an exhibition and displays of custom products from local and national artists. And of course there’ll be amazing djs and mcs to keep the vibe going all weekend and twenty graffiti artists painting all around the leisure centre so you can watch them create from start to finish all through the weekend. It certainly promises to be an exciting event and you can keep up with all the latest news on their Facebook page. We’ll see you there!

KEEPING TOM NICE TO PLAY IN THE CAXTONS FOYER BAR Several times recently we’ve seen what a fine venue for intimate drama the Caxton Theatre foyer bar can be, (see our review of Private Peaceful elsewhere in the magazine) and that makes it ideally suited to their upcoming production of Lucy Gannon’s prize winning play about mental health and its impact on family life, Keeping Tom Nice. The play is a rich and compelling examination of a family disintegrating under the pressures of an increasingly complex world and concerns Tom, a twenty five year old with severe learning difficulties who lives at home with his parents and brother. It’s the kind of play that might get overwhelmed by a large auditorium but should be perfect in the new foyer bar layout. The play runs from Thursday 8th to Saturday 10th August and tickets are available through the Caxtons website.

armed forces day 2019
It was the hottest day of the year so far but that couldn’t stop several thousand people from lining the streets of Cleethorpes to pay respect to members of our armed forces, veterans of previous conflicts and to the many young people whose service in the cadet forces of the armed services confers so much good, both on them and on their community. The highlight of the day’s events was the appearance of the mounted section of the Royal Lancers Association, who looked magnificent on their black chargers as they made their salute in front of Knoll House but there was plenty going on elsewhere including an air display featuring famous aeroplanes like the P47 Thunderbolt, Tucano and a twilight display from the FireFlies Aerobatic Display Team. It was certainly a day to remember so congratulations go to all those who participated and organised the event and we look forward to many more in the future!
AN EVENING OF POETIC DELIGHTS AT THE CAXTONS
W
hat better way to spend an evening than settling down in the cosy welcoming Caxton Studio Bar for an evening of poetry, music and song. Once again, the Caxton Quintet did not disappoint, with an eclectic mix of the funny, the poignant and the reflective. The laugh out loud moments were interspersed with more thoughtful pieces, all enertainingly performed. Cathy Bennett-Ryan, Hazel Hale and Pamela Reynolds delivered the poetry, Ruairidh Greig and Stephen Rayner played a variety of music on a variety of instruments and Ruairidh and Pamela treated us to some a capella singing. The long and the short of it is that this is a show not to be missed. Performances are on Thursday 27th & Friday 28th June at 7.30pm. Tickets can be obtained from the Caxton Theatre website www. caxtontheatre.com or on the door. Advance booking is recommended however as seating is limited.
WE ARE THE MULTITUDE: BREAKWATER THEATRE END THEIR SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE
T
his production of We Are The Multitude marks the end of the Breakwater Theatre Company’s season at Cleethorpes Library. Having been sponsored by Lincs Inspire and Arts Council England to bring work to the Albert Room, including 15 new plays and the work of 12 different writers, the company have shown work from across the globe and have developed a regular audience at the venue. This product is the first full length play performed by the company that was not written by one of its own members. Instead, Laura Harper offered her work after the play writing
competition held in February. It had been previously performed at Manchester’s 24:7 Festival to great acclaim. The production did not disappoint. A talented cast of two actors had rehearsed intensively over a three day period. Philip Marshall Junior portrayed Simon, a failed novelist who loathes his real world job and Erica Slonskyj played Lisa, a bubbly but ultimately lonely office worker, overlooked by her colleagues. The pair find themselves in work, early one Saturday morning in the Finance Building of Manchester University on the day it has been targeted by an anarchist group striking a blow
against the government and university fees by occupying what was assumed to be an empty building and loading it with explosives. Trapped in the office and separated from the outside world, Lisa and Simon spark off against each other. Marshall and Slonskyj are both new to Breakwater and both have proved to be valuable additions to the team. They achieved great depths in their characterisation and performance which was by turns, funny, uplifting and heart-breaking. They clearly enjoyed working together and had excellent rapport. We, initially, despised the arrogant Simon who felt he was too good for the job he found himself in, only to see behind the mask and find a vulnerable, fragile and hurt individual struggling. In Lisa he found a kindred spirit with whom he would never normally choose to associate. Slonskyj endeared herself to the audience with her
warm-hearted efforts to get on with everyone and to fit in. The acerbic quips delivered by Marshall were served with relish. The set was, as always, kept simple but it never ceases to amaze how Breakwater transform the space in the Albert room into a black-box, studio theatre and the audience rapidly forget their location. Sound and lighting were never intrusive and added to the atmosphere. Breakwater Theatre Company will now take their leave but will return to Cleethorpes Library in October, when they will produce two new one act plays written by the winners of Rough Cuts and Scratches – Death Regs by Byron Pratt and Make Up by Andy Moseley. Their audience are already looking forward to these productions and will miss the company over the summer months.

A DAY AT THE CRUCIBLE MAKES STAN’S WISH COME TRUE!
T
he Grove Care Home in Waltham aims to enhance people’s lives through the provision of imaginative activities and opportunities and staff at the care home work hard to ensure that each resident receives a personalised service that is responsive to their individual needs with an emphasis on each person’s identity and what is important to them. To facilitate this they introduced their ‘Make A Wish’ initiative where residents are asked to think of something they’ve always wanted to do and the staff team do their best to make that wish happen.
As part of this initiative two residents had a fantastic trip to the world famous Crucible in Sheffield when life-long snooker fan Stan O’Keefe said he’d love to go to the Crucible to see a World Snooker Championship match and together with his friend Jack Powell, the team from The Grove took the pair to Sheffield to watch a semi-final match between Dave Gilbert and John Higgins, one of the most successful snooker players in the history of the sport. They thoroughly enjoyed a very entertaining match getting, completely engrossed in the action. They saw John Higgins win to go through to the final, in which he lost to Judd Trump.

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY TO CHAIR BASED EXERCISE ENTHUSIAST REG Grimsby Leisure Centre echoed to the sound of Happy Birthday To You on Monday 13th May when members of the Chair Based Exercise Group interrupted their fitness routine to celebrate the 90th birthday of regular participant Reg Hawkins. Born in Stoke on Trent in 1929 Reg came to live in Grimsby when he was two and his father got a job as Superintendent of the Moss
Road power station. He liked the town so much he never moved away and spent his working life at Hewitt’s Brewery and in the litigation department of Wilkin & Chapman. A keen golfer, he has been a member of Cleethorpes Golf Club since 1961 and although he doesn’t play any more, as a result of a stroke and heart attack he suffered in 2014 he’s still a regular at the club’s social events.
Reg is also a regular attendee at the weekly chair based exercise class at Grimsby Leisure Centre and on Monday there was tea and a cake presented by group lead and fitness instructor Ian Shorley Harlow to help mark the big day. Asked about the impact the class has had on him Reg said, “The class is an excellent environment for those like me who are recuperating from serious health problems. Everyone is friendly and supportive and we always have a good laugh. After hearing that my 90th birthday wasn’t far off, the group arranged this celebration. The group provides everyone the opportunity to exercise, socialise and build their confidence.”
“When you are getting over a stroke it’s just what you want”. The chair based exercise group meet every Monday morning at 10:30am to 11:15am for 45 minutes of seated exercises. The exercises are well suited for people managing long term health problems and many of those who attend previously attended a GP referred stroke group. All levels of ability and mobility are catered for, with exercises tailored to the individuals attending. a celebration of the arts
The return of the St James Festival, formerly one of the most vital elements of the local arts calendar, has been one of this year’s success stories and we were able to enjoy one of the highlights in Minster Square on Saturday 13th July when happy crowds gathered in the sunshine, (well mostly), to enjoy an open air concert entitled A Celebration Of The Arts. Onlookers were treated to a fantastic variety of music and dance including drumming from Gyoko Taiko and the Oasis Academy taiko group, music from the MAPAS Flute Ensemble, dancing from JADE Dancefever and singing by Casey Peterson, Imogen Horton and the MAPAS Youth Voices. There were also performances by Steel The Rhythm on steel pans, The Grimsby and District Pipe Band and the Fusion Funkaleles. All in all a fascinating and exciting programme which kept the crowd entertained all day – even when a little rain arrived. Meanwhile on Top Town Market there were more performances and art and crafts to be enjoyed including windmill making and screen printing. There was also a pop up Teenage Market with art and craft products on display, a giant chess board, table football and Connect Four – plenty to keep everyone interested. And excellent ice cream too. What more could you ask?

GARDEN AID CARING FOR TWO COMMUNITIES Age Care Development is a local charity which has built strong links with the Kyenjojo District of western Uganda, and especially with the community of Mukunyu. The village provides shelter and care for those who are too old, (or too young), to work in the local tea plantations. Life in Mukunyu can be hard. Finding food, shelter and clothing is a constant struggle. Even basic medicines like paracetemol are beyond the reach of most people and an education is all but impossible for children who do not have the money to pay school fees. Our good friend Mark Howarth of Garden Aid donates 10% of his profit to funding projects aimed at helping the residents of Myukuntu, helping to provide much needed medicines, food, hospital equipment and school books which means that he really is helping two communities.

call of the wild festival
So the day finally dawned and we headed down to the Lincolnshire Showground for the inaugural Call Of The Wild Festival. The locals, more accustomed to showjumping and best of breed peered bewildered over the hedgerows, stamping their feet and vigorously chewing cud. Their cattle were the same. With three stages and a line up including The Virginmarys, The Wildhearts and Hardcore Superstar the only thing that could spoil the weekend would be rain and in fact we got three days of almost uninterrupted cloudless blue skies so it really was just about perfect. It was a weekend of flying Vs and oystercatchers, impressive facial hair and kilts and of course great music. My highlights arrived early with battle of the band winners Villainous, all the way from Brighton and classic glam band Last Great Dreamers. The organisers have booked the site for the next five years, so we’re told, and they’re expecting next year to be even bigger and better so watch this space! The food was great too. Hats off to whoever made the butternut squash tagine.
