ARTS

THE PLAY WITHIN A PLAY’S THE THING The play within a play is a device beloved of writers from Shakespeare onwards and seldom has it been used to such marvellously humourous effect as in Play On, Rick Abbotts 1980s love letter to the world of amateur theatre. As the company assemble to rehearse their new murder mystery Murder Most Foul it seems that everything that can go wrong will go wrong - from an unfinished script to unlearned lines and worse. The show is hilariously amateurish, the ‘murder mystery’ plot doesn’t really have a murder, and when the author decides to give a speech on the state of the modern theatre during the curtain calls, the audience is treated to a madcap climax and a thoroughly hilarious romp. Even the sound effects reap their share of laughter.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Saturday 21st April to Saturday 28th April PLAY ON Written by Rick Abbot Directed by John M Solley Saturday 2nd June to Saturday 9th June MURDER WEAPON Written by Brian Clemens Directed by Debra West Saturday 14th July to Saturday 21st July DI AND VIV AND ROSE Written by Amelia Bullmore Directed by Pam Reynolds

YARNCRAFT

Time to get knitting - have you caught the yarncraft bug? It's one of the biggest and fastest growing activities in the UK but at the same time it's traditional and your mum and grandmother probably did pretty much the same in years gone by. What is it? It's yarncraft of course. Whether you are a beginner or experienced knitter or crocheter your local yarn shop is more than just a place to buy supplies - it's a source of advice and inspiration, a place to learn new skills and somewhere to meet old friends and make new ones. Yarn Shop Day is on Saturday 12th May this year. It’s a celebration of everything that’s good about your local wool shop with exclusive patterns, discounts and competitions plus the opportunity to meet lots of friends, have a knit, have a natter and raise money for charity. Should be a great day. We’ll see you there!

Bo G

iovanni Pernice first came to our attention in 2015 when he joined the professional team on Strictly, reaching the final in his first year on the show. Since then he’s become a firm favourite with the fans and one of the UK’s most popular dancers, performing in the Strictly arena tour and taking his own annual dance spectacular on the road. He’s at Grimsby Auditorium on April 30th with this year’s show, entitled Born To Win. We got to talk to him during a break from rehearsals. The Peoples: Good afternoon. You’re appearing at Grimsby Auditorium on the 30th April and I can tell you that we’re all looking forward to the show. We came to Dance Is Life last year and we had some prize winners in the audience and we all thought it was fantastic. GP: That’s good. It’s always nice to hear that the audience is happy with our performance. That’s what keeps us going from show to show. It makes it all worthwhile. You were born in Sicily but moved to Bologna to pursue a career in dance and nowadays

orn To Win

The Peoples talks to Strictly star Giovanni Pernice

you spend a lot of time in the United Kingdom.

Not at the moment. There’s a championship once every year and we’ll be ready when that comes around. I’ve won for the last two years and it would be nice to make it three.

Yes. I moved to England three years ago although I like to go back to Italy sometimes for a visit. I love living here though but I was in Italy for Christmas You joined Strictly in 2015 - that must have been an exciting time. which was very nice too. Since then you’ve partnered That sounds good. I think perhaps Georgia May Foote, and Laura we should all spend Christmas in Whitmore in 2016 and of course in 2017 you danced with Debbie Italy. You made your name as a latin dance specialist. What’s the McGee. Are you allowed to tell me who was your favourite? special appeal of latin dance? I studied latin and ballroom but I won the Italian championship as a latin dancer. I was drawn in that direction because it’s more fun, more cheeky. It suits my personality. You’re also the world champion at jive kicks and flicks and Charleston swivels. Do you have any more record attempts planned?

Well it’s really nice to have a different partner each year. With Georgia we were lucky enough to make it all the way to the final, and Laura was wonderful for her fantastic commitment - but my best year so far was with the lovely Debbie McGee. She always gave 100% and she was always keen to learn. Debbie had some dance training

and experience already but there was something special about watching the two you practicing together. Even more so when it came to the Saturday night performances. Lots of us expected you to win. Did you expect to win? Well once we were in the final then of course you put everything into winning - all four couples feel that way - but arriving in the final is already a big achievement. By staying in the competition until the final it means that you have danced all of the dances - and that’s what it’s all about. It’s about having the chance to make the public watching you happy.

APR

If there were one dance with

Debbie that you would pick out as being extra special, which would it be? I think I would choose the Argentine Tango because everything worked. The music, the lighting, the choreography, the costumes. It all came together. The atmosphere in the studio was great. It all made for a real good dance. Has planning already started for the 2018 show? Not yet. We find out in June if we’re back. You’ve been on the Strictly tour. Is it hard work? It’s not hard. We perform a full two hour show in the arena, in front of 14 thousand people, so it’s always a fantastically exciting event. There are thousands of people chanting your name. The atmosphere and the adrenaline carry you through. You brought your show dance Is Life to Grimsby last year and it was hugely popular. It’s always a good night in Grimsby and the Auditorium is a really nice place. Before I was doing my own show I used to come to Grimsby to appear in Kevin and Karen Clifton’s shows. And what can we expect from the new show? Well it’s a brand new show called Born To Win. Last year was about the differences and similarities between the UK and Italy, this year it’s more about the story of my life, right back to Sicily and Bologna and then coming to England and joining Strictly. I have Luba Mushtuk with me, she’s a fantastic dancer and choreographer and an excellent cast. And our choreographer and director is Jason Gilkison, who has the same role on Kevin and Karen’s show. That sounds like a guarantee of quality - we’ll look forward to seeing the show in April. Thank you for being nice to interview and have a great tour. Thank you and we’ll see Grimsby soon.

TOP TOWN .... new cinema, bars and restaurants and lots of new retail - things are looking up for

TOP TOWN

Not so long ago you could have been forgiven for thinking that Top Town was on it's way out. Shop closures, especially those of major chains like Woolies and BHS had sucked the colour and vitality out of he area and it was looking generally run down and a bit tatty. In the past couple of years things have definitely changed for the better however, with new retail outlets opening up, smart new bars and restaurants and of course the prospect of a major new entertainment and nine screen cinema complex on the old bus station. It’s a project that promises to bring families back into the town centre and the saving of the Barge means that the area will have the best of both worlds - new and traditional right next to each other.

HOMES

Is your home a money pit or a nice little earner?

Time was that people mostly climbed the property ladder by moving from house to house but nowadays there’s a tendency to stay put and improve what you’ve got. But if you’re going to turn your property into a building site you need to do some serious research before you commit. What will it cost? What value will it add? Where do I start? Step one is to sort out any existing problems. Fix any leaks in the roof, damp, structural cracks to walls, dry rot, missing or broken roof tiles, and any chimney problems. And don’t overlook the small things either. Sort out any peeling paint, squeaking doors, jammed or damaged windows, broken door latches, dripping taps, loose tiles. Give walls a lick of paint, sand floors, reseal baths and showers, declutter. If you need more space then consider all your options - expanding up, down and sideways! Loft conversions are one of the best value home projects you can choose to invest in and they’re the easiest way to add a bedroom or a bathroom. Garages and basements are ripe for conversion too and if you love your garden but want more indoor space, consider building a conservatory on to the back of the house, blurring the lines between outdoors and

HOMES indoors and creating a versatile and bright space for all the family to use. If you’re planning to sell then it’s worth smartening up the exteriors and garden because they’re the first things that potential purchasers will see when they arrive and although it might be unfair, first impressions do count for a lot. Tidying up your grey looking drive or patio may well pay dividends when it comes to making a sale.

If you’ve got money to spend then remember that a new kitchen or bathroom is important to many buyers but there’s no need to spend thousands. Keep it simple with new doors, handles and surfaces or a good quality plain suite. There’s no point in putting in something that you love if the buyers are just going to rip it out as soon as they move in.

motoring DON’T DROP YOUR GUARD! STAY READY FOR MORE BEASTS FROM THE EAST!

W

ell as we go to print the beast from the east is slinking away to the west and storm Emma is petering out and all in all it seems like we got off fairly easy here on the south bank. But of course that doesn’t mean that the winter is done with us yet - there’ll be more cold weather before summer comes striding in looking all suntanned and eating choc ices. And that means more driving in terrible conditions with all its attendant risks, so it’s a good time for a quick refresher on the key elements of safe winter driving. First of all make sure your car is in good order. Have it serviced, make sure levels are good, check your tread depth. If there are any problems with your motor this is the time of the year that will expose them. Second important point anticipation. Look well ahead for

potential hazards – including, of course, patches of ice – and keep your speed well down. Accelerate, brake, steer and change gear as smoothly as possible to reduce the risk of a skid. Using a higher gear may aid grip on packed ice because it makes it easier to get traction. In a manual vehicle, you might need to slip the clutch a little to prevent the car from stalling. Many automatics will let you select second gear at a standstill to pull away in which avoids wheel spin. Braking distances can increase tenfold on ice compared with a dry road so you should leave up to 10 times the normal recommended gap between you and the car in front. Remember that tyres grip less efficiently in cold conditions. So even if the temperature is above zero and there’s no ice on the road, you should take extra care. Winter tyres offer more grip and can significantly increase performance in icy conditions

AND OF COURSE KEEP AN EYE OPEN FOR BLACK ICE!

Black ice is a thin layer of ice on the road surface. Because it is smooth and transparent, it appears the same colour as the road below. It can be almost invisible to drivers, which makes it particularly dangerous. So if the temperature is low and the road surface looks wet, be careful and drive with extra caution. You may see it glinting in the sunlight, or spot cars ahead swerving for no obvious reason. However, it’s likely you won’t see black ice at all, so be particularly cautious on shaded stretches of road, bridges, flyovers and tunnels – anywhere the surface temperature may be lower, in fact. Quiet roads are also more likely to be affected so try sticking to major highways as far as possible.
