Well now. What a summer of surprises this has been. At the time of writing we’re enjoying our second week of almost unbroken sunshine, the grass at Wimbledon is yellow and England are still in the World Cup. With any luck it’s coming home. Let’s hope so anyway. In this issue we have picture reviews from Armed Forces Day and The Lincolnshire Show and a preview of the Auditorium panto which will feature comedian Mark Little and Lee Brennan (lead singer of 90s boyband 911) as well as the legendary Fraser Hines. Now that sounds like a great show!

So just what is steampunk?

AUG

FROM

Steampunk is a genre of science fiction which combines the fashions and technologies of the Victorian era with those of the present day. Think steam powered computers, flintlock ray guns, clockwork cars. Enthusiasts often wear frock coats or bodices and bustles or top hats fitted with improbable goggles sometimes incorporating elements drawn from the wild west, gothic horror or historical fiction and if you love fancy dress then you’ll love steampunk. It’s a style that’s rapidly growing in popularity and to reflect that our good friends at Twinkles have taken delivery of a terrific new range of steampunk outfits. And if it all sounds like your thing then you may like to know that the world’s oldest and biggest steam AUG punk gathering - The Asylum Festival - takes place each year in Lincoln. This year it runs from August 24-27th and you can get more information from www.asylumsteampunk.co.uk

tramlines 2018 - day 1

Tramlines has a new home for 2018, up at Hillsborough Park, and a fantastic line-up of artists made sure the festival got off to a great start, with the likes of St Petersburg, The Big Moon and Everything Everything leading the way on the main stage and Stereophonics and local favourites Milburn taking the evening to a fantastic conclusion. Our highlight of the day was The Orielles, all the way from Halifax, and bringing some intensely

Pixiesque to the big blue marquee of the Leadmill Live stage. With the grass in the park looking distinctly parched there wasn’t even too much complaint about the appearance of a spot of rain midafternoon. Tramlines continues today and tomorrow, there are still some tickets available we think – check on www. tramlines.org.uk – and for those for whom music just isn’t enough there’s pop up cinema, comedy and excellent food available too. (Try the Reuben beetroot burger – it’ll change your life).

tramlines 2018 - day 2

Saturday at Tramlines was another scorcher and we decided to make the most of all the good things on offer away from the music stages so we took some time out to watch The Lion King in the pop-up cinema in the woods and to gain much needed spiritual refreshment with some zen rock stacking. We also managed to catch the wonderful Henning Wehn knocking ‘em dead in a packed out Leadmill marquee.

There was great music on offer too of course. We didn’t completely waste our time. Highlights of the day? Stefflon Don certainly dazzled on T’Other Stage and Sheffield’s very own Everly Pregnant Brothers had the whole place singing along to My Chip Pan’s On Fire and other songs, many featuring some high quality swearing and condiment references. And of course Reverend And The Makers, the Kings of Northern Bounce, got everyone moving on the main stage. Headline sets came from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Clean Bandit and we all headed off into the gloaming singing All You Need Is Love. Great stuff.

murder’s in the heir Caxton Theatre September 1st - September 8th 2018

I

f you love a good mystery drama but sometimes feel that you could have come up with a better solution than the one the author designed then the new production at The Caxton Theatre - Murder’s In The Heir by Billy St John - should be right up your street. Set on the stage of a local theatre where a murder mystery is about to be performed it’s a play within a play, or possibly a play about a play within a play, in which the audience is called upon, not merely to follow the clues and discover the identity of the murderer, but actually to decide during the interval who the murderer should be by voting on ballot papers provided at the door.. When the votes have been tallied and the killer for the evening identified then the cast will perform the version of the play that corresponds to the audience vote. With twelve potential suspects and twelve endings to master and perform it’s no small undertaking but the cast rise to the challenge admirably under the direction of Gemma Dodds, who also appears as the harassed director of the play. There are clues to be spotted in the second act which the eagle eyed among the audience can look out for but to be honest it’s all too much fun to be bothering about little things like whodunnit, this one to just sit back and enjoy. There’s plenty of humour, intrigue and a multiplicity of weapons including a very big spanner and amongst an ensemble cast everyone turns in an excellent performance. It’s invidious as ever to pick favourites but Jack Scott as Bensonhurst the butler, George Mansfield as Rufus the Handyman and Gail Littlefair as Minerva the cook all bring some sharp humour to the downstairs characters while among the upstairs contingent Debbie Appleyard as Fiona Starkweather, Liz Drury as Lois van Zandt and John Ferguson (who doubles up as Simon Starkweather and Simon Starkweather III - PS this isn’t a spoiler) all create subtle riffs on some of the stock characters of the country house detective mystery With the possibility of a different denouement every night of the run, (and still several unused in the kitty), this is guaranteed to be a week of surprises and it’s highly recommended.

SANDCASTLES

sandcastles on cleethorpes beach

16

There was a fantastic team spirit on display on Cleethorpes Beach on the morning of Armed Forces Day when hundreds of volunteers, armed only with buckets, spades and boundless enthusiasm made an attempt on the World Sandcastle Building Record. Aiming to beat a total of 2230 castles, a record set a German team back in 2013, they were defeated in their effort – but perhaps there might be a chance of another go next year? Castles were rigorously checked to ensure that they conformed to the minimum size of 2ft high and 2ft wide and topped with a four turret castle and despite failing to break the record a marvellous time was had by everyone who took part!

Raising Funds To Help Students In Uganda’s Kyenjogo District Our good friend Mark from Garden Aid (that’s him in the rather smart orange hat on the opposite page) is a man well known for his fundraising activities and at present he’s looking to raise £250 to make adaptations to a schoolhouse in Western Ugands so that Hannah, who uses a wheelchair since recovering from polio some years ago), can continue her education. The money is already in the bank for school fees and books, it’s just the necessary improvements to amenities that are required so if you feel like helping out why not give Mark a call on 07742 638423.

KUMON

building confidence, aiding achievement

At Kumon they believe that the key to learning is confidence and one of the most rewarding things about being a part of as Kumon programme is helping young people to grow in assurance and to develop new skills. We spoke to instructor Sarah Prior of Kumon Grimsby about what makes her job so satisfying. “As an instructor I have had the pleasure of working with many young people and I share the joy and pride of their parents as their children improve their English and maths, gaining self confidence and independence and acquiring valuable study skills.” We spoke to a Kumon parent and she agreed, saying "My children have benefited a lot from studying with Kumon. As they all started from an early age the system is part of their study routine. They do their work every day and look forward to completing each level eagerly. Kumon understands the needs of the learner and through repetition makes it perfect. I am extremely grateful to Sarah and her team for encouraging the children and making it fun with rewards to ensure the maximum result.” “Kumon is definitely good value and one of the best things you can do to help your children to reach their full potential!”

ART IN THE MARKET

ART IN THE MARKET

31

ART IN THE MARKET LAUNCHES IN TOP TOWN There was some fascinating pop up artwork on display on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th August when Grimsby’s Top Town Market played host to the launch of an exciting new arts programme, Art In The Market, organised by Our Big Picture. The location was a new market stall exhibition space Market Central - which will be the venue for several further events over the next two years. This unique space is to be the focal point for an original high quality arts programme that will include emerging and experienced artists and focus on visual arts and making through commissioned exhibitions, child and adult drop-in sessions and workshops and public art commissions. On display over the weekend were three sculptures by Canadian born, Leeds based artist Ian Kirkpatrick, (pictured left) whose speciality is brightly coloured flat pack installations made of high specification card. Two of the pieces were the result of a period spent as artist in residence at Leeds Museums, and commemorate the end of the First World War; Blast, a crouching machine gunner and Kingdom Of Dreams, a fantastic amalgam of war horse and unicorn. The third plinth featured a surreal pop art rabbit, emblazoned with a wide range of names, symbols and references to great artists of past and present. The sculptures certainly drew plenty of attention from shoppers of all ages and got Art In The Market off to an excellent start. Future activities include drop-in craft workshops for all ages, more pop up art installations and family dropin sessions and contributions from artist in residence Terry Clarke. There will also be live music, including a special performance space for aspiring and professional musicians alike, including both group and solo performances. Asked about what the programme will bring to the town Paula Denton, creative and management director of Our Big Picture said: “We all want to see this unique space become an arts and makers focal point within the town centre for everyone, but especially for families. We want to inspire imaginations and conversations, drawing on the local desire and willingness to creatively engage, a space to explore a sense of place.” You can find Ian Kirkpatrick at iankirkpatrick. wordpress.com. Our Big Picture are at www. ourbigpicture.co.uk and you can find information about the Art In The Market programme there.

CYCLING

33

Time to get out of town and enjoy the glories of the Lincolnshire Wolds! We’ve had a good few months of major cycling events, with the arrival of the Tours of Britain and Yorkshire and rumours of a possible visit from the Vuelta but now it’s time to stop being a spectator for a while and get out on the road ourselves. It’s easy to forget sometimes just how lucky we are to live in an area with some of the best cycling roads in the country right on our doorsteps. There are routes available for riders of all levels of experience and fitness, superb views and lots of places to stop for a rest and refreshments before heading for home. So don’t just spend the weekend weeding and watering or putting your feet up - get your trusty bike out and tuned up and get yourself out for a Wolds Weekender.

Get fit and save money! Is your workplace ready for Cycle To Work Day 2018? August 15th is Cycle To Work Day - an important reminder of just how much good it would do us all to leave the car at home and make our commute into something much more beneficial. So why should we cycle to work? What are the benefits for us? Well first of all it’ll make you feel fitter, look trimmer and boost your happiness levels by getting you out in the sunshine and you’ll probably have more money in your pocket because cycling to work is cheaper too and with car ownership costs skyrocketting and public transport costs not far behind commuting by bike has never made more sense. And lastly, but possibly most importantly it’s good for the planet. While you’re cycling to work you’re not contributing to congestion, burning fossil fuels or creating greenhouse gases. (Probably). If you are you should change your breakfast cereal. You can find out more at www.cycletoworkday.org

A GLORIOUS DAY IN THE SUNSHINE FOR THE GROVE CARE HOME SUMMER FAIR Residents and staff at The Grove Care Home in Waltham had a beautiful sunny day for their annual summer fair and the home enjoyed a great turnout with local people joining families and residents for a fun and busy day. There were many stalls and games to enjoy including a raffle and tombola. Entertainment was provided by the care home’s residents choir. Stalls included plants and crafts made by members of the Gardening Club who had been busy making wooden bird boxes to sell. The boxes were specially designed for wrens and robins and proved to be very popular. There were also handmade cards and cakes donated by residents, staff and families. “We had fantastic support from local families and businesses who gave very generously towards the raffle and tombola prizes” said Home Manager Ros Wells. “We’d like to thank everyone who came along to support us and made this a lovely family event”. The summer fair raised over £700 for the resident’s Comfort Fund which goes towards special outings, day trips and entertainment for residents at the Waltham Care Home.

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES: FOR VALUE AND QUALITY!

It’s one of the doubtful privileges of modern life that if we find we need something we can always go to the internet to get it. Whether it’s goods or services there’ll always be something out in cyberspace to fit the bill. But of course what the web can’t offer is expertise, advice and a range of options that can be adjusted until they meet your needs exactly. There’s no doubt it – using the internet involves cutting corners. So here’s a selection of businesses, (not forgetting our good friends at Brigg Beds who are on page 4) that we trust because we’ve seen what they do and you can trust because they’re at the end of a phone line, not hidden away in some dark recess of your computer!

RETAIL

THERAPY time to flex

those spending Give the muscles! Perfect Present

We’ve already had a little rant elsewhere in this magazine about the merits of shopping local rather than rushing straight to the internet for everything we need but if that’s true for services then it goes double for retail. Why spend all day in the house waiting for a package to arrive when you could be out in the real world, dealing face to face with real people? Although we’re aware that local shopping has taken a few knocks from the big chains lately it’s still true that we have a wide range of excellent shops to choose from locally and here are some of our favourites!

Planning a summer getaway?

POWDER CHECK your vehicle for perfect peace of mind!

What’s the dumbest thing you can do when driving to your summer holiday? Well believe it or not last summer over 2000 drivers had to be rescued because they had run out of fuel on the motorway! So before you set off a few basic checks – POWDER checks – are in order to make sure you arrive safely and on time. And if you’re not feeling confident you’ll find some excellent mechanics on these pages who’ll be glad to help.

Petrol: Make sure that you have enough for the journey and plan refuelling stops along the way to avoid mishaps. Oil: Check it when the engine is cold and the vehicle is level. Also check clutch, brake, and power steering fluids. Water: Radiator and windscreen washer bottles should be checked while parked on a level surface. Damage: Check bodywork, wheels and fixtures, including the mirrors. Ensure windows are clean inside and out. Electrics: Check all lights, indicators and hazards are in good working order and clean. Also test the horn. Rubber: Check tyre pressures and tread depth, and look for damage to the tyres and wheels and wiper blades.

IN THE KNOW

armed forces day

52

Huge crowds lined the route of the 2018 Armed Forces Day parade as it made its way from The Market Place to Knoll House and the weekend saw a special tribute to the RAF, which is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year. Members of the public came out to pay tribute to the men and women who risk everything to keep us safe and there were lots of displays and exhibits to keep the whole family fascinated.

IN THE KNOW

Two glorious sun baked days saw a wide variety of livestock stealing the show at the Lincolnshire showground and it wasn’t just the horses, sheep and cattle that proved to be the centres of attention with hawks, ferrets and even giant tortoises drawing big crowds!

Poetry, Song, Books, Artwork And Much More!

T

here are exciting times ahead at La Luna with new publications in the offing, social singing, music and poetry and a major new project, funded by the Arts Council, bringing some outstanding creative talent to the town to work with local writers and performers. Best Words is a year long programme of poetry and music set to begin in the autumn. It follows on from last year’s hugely successful Young Voices project which gave young writers the opportunity to work with established writers and editors to produce work for a brand new anthology. Best Words takes this idea to the next level with Emerging Voices, a programme for young writers aged between 18-25. La Luna are also working with Lincs Inspire to bring a number of exciting poetry events to the area including a series of poetry workshops and performances at Cleethorpes Library and regular poetry cafe events at To celebrate National Poetry Day on October 4th they’ll Riverhead Coffee in Grimsby. be presenting Recovery Songs, a moving and powerful work by Ralph Dartford that tackles issues around addiction and recovery. Ralph will lead a workshop in the afternoon and participants will have the opportunity to perform as support at the evening event. It’s not just poetry that’s on offer however. The Great Grimsby Community Choir will be producing two new pieces, working with professional composers and writers on a suite of music to commemorate the end of the First World War and another to celebrate Christmas. They will record a CD and perform special concerts with outstanding guests to showcase these new works. There’ll be concerts, performances, workshops and events throughout the year so watch this space for more information and we’ll look forward to seeing you at some excellent La Luna events!

There’s a lot going on at For further information on La Luna projects or events go to www.josiemoon.co.uk
