Fieldays 2019 Future Post fences receives Innovation Award at Fieldays By Jess Paton jess@districtspost.media

Waiuku company, Future Post, received the 2019 Innovation Award at the New Zealand National Fieldays (Fieldays Launch NZ Award) last week. Future Post works closely with Fonterra, making fence posts from 100 per cent recycled plastics, meaning your Anchor Light Proof milk bottles appear on farms across New Zealand. Judges at Fieldays said this product provides a way for farmers to participate in addressing what is a massive environmental problem for New Zealand. They said “this is a positive and potential game changing step towards dealing with New Zealand’s plastic recycling challenge.” Future Post was founded by Jerome Wenzlick, while he was attempting to build a fence on an old rubbish dump site. He found his wooden fence posts were breaking as he tried to ram them through all the waste plastic in the ground. Jerome realised if he could build a stronger fence post from waste plastic, he would help solve a bigger environmental problem! After a meeting with Bindi Ground, a farmer with previous experience in recycling and repurposing products, a business partnership was born and a commitment to produce premium fencing products that perform better and lasts for longer. Anchor Light Proof™ milk bottles are collected from the Fonterra Takanini site and transported to the Future Post Waiuku plant, where they are mixed with soft plastics and turned into fence posts. “What we’re doing is repurposing waste that could have gone to landfill and turning it in to a valuable product for consumers,” said Jerome. “Our partnership with Fonterra gives us access to a steady supply of raw material from the Co-op’s own recycling initiatives. It also gives us access to a network of nationwide Farm Source stores that can sell the fence posts, and access to 10,000 farmers who are actively engaged in environmental initiatives, like fencing to keep cows out of waterways and planting along river banks.” LarisaThathiah, Fonterra Brands New Zealand’s (FBNZ) Sustainability and Environment Manager, said “this partnership provides farmers with an environmentally-friendly fencing option, made from the packaging of our farmers’ milk, which is pretty special!”

“It’s not enough to just recycle anymore, it’s about creating less waste full stop, or at least turning it into something useful,” Larisa said. “That’s why these fence posts are so exciting – they’re made from 100 per cent recycled material, and have a life expectancy of more than 50 years.” Jerome said “Future Post is a start-up, but we have plans for some new products in 2019, including those for non-farming sectors.” The fence posts are available in selected Fonterra Farm Source stores across the North Island.

Local Waiuku axemen, Nathan McDonald and Jesse Whitehead, competed at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS New Zealand Championships at the 2019 Fieldays on Saturday 15 June, and both came away with placings. In its second year running, eight men from around the country went axe to wood to make their mark and walk away with the championship title. Shane Jordan (32), from Stratford battled in six gruelling disciplines to fight for the top overall score of the competition. Nathan McDonald (28) from Waiuku stood on the stump in second place and Jesse Whitehead (28) also from Waiuku stood on the stump in third place – there must be something in the water! Shane has an impressive 17 years under his toolbelt in the sport and has previous success winning the Standing Block Championship title two years in a row at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Shane’s brother Jack also took home a championship title during this year’s STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series at Fieldays, taking home the Rookie title in yesterday’s competition.
