Green fingered gardener to international scholar and family. It’s been providing heaps of cool things for families in Waiuku.” Although the Trust has run many projects over the years, the one that is particularly dear to Grace’s heart is the community gardens. “So many people tell me my garden is looking good but I have to say, that’s not my garden, I have my own at my house, it’s actually yours. I want the community to make it theirs.” In order to achieve this goal, the Trust encourages people to work in the garden, provide hand created signage and add personal touches. “If they add to it, it creates a sense of ownership. I guess people are too polite, they don’t want to enter thinking its private property and they would be stealing if they took the food.” Ongoing support from several business who provide equipment, soil, fertiliser and seedlings has made this all possible. “Franklin Agritech helped us huge. If it wasn’t for all the help and support, we would definitely have been struggling.” Funding from government social services agencies enables the Trust to provide a free school holiday programme for ages 11-17. “They pay to have every child come onto our programme, Breakaway. We are still trialling it out but once we know what we are doing, we will open it up to all children.” As Grace describes it, “so many working parents can’t take time off to manage their children during the holidays, so what are the children doing – things they shouldn’t be doing. Some families simply can’t afford anything other than the essentials so this (programme) enables the children to join a holiday programme.” Recently, the owner of Franklin Agritech, where Grace has been studying level five horticulture, asked if she was interested in going to India on a government funded scholarship. “He said it was because he could see I have potential and experience in

horticulture. It’s also because I come from here.” The Rongoaa Maaori and Ayurveda scholarship programme is a collaboration between indigenous tertiary institution Te Whare Waananga o Awanuiaarangi, the Giles Brooker Academy, the Arya Vaida Pharmacy Training Academy and the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia programme. The six week long programme will be based in the foothills of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu, Southern India and will focus on Ayurveda, a traditional Indian system of science, health and medicine. It aims to advance scholarship and research in Maaori and indigenous health, wellbeing and knowledge, and give rise to insights that will support the resurgence of Rongoaa Maaori in New Zealand. Even though there are only ten recipients of this prestigious scholarship, Grace is very humble about being selected. “This group has been carefully selected from academic and applied practitioner backgrounds, and those who are committed to improving Maaori health and wellbeing. This experience will arm them with more tools and knowledge about how to integrate traditional practice in contemporary health interventions. They’re going to have an amazing cultural and educational experience, and gain knowledge and insights that could have a significant impact on the communities,” said Associate Professor Mera Penehira who will be leading the team to India. Dr Penehir teaches Te Whare Waananga o Awanuiaarangi doctoral programmes in Hawai’I and Washington State Universities. The foothills of Southern India are a long way from little ole Waiuku but I’m sure, like everything else, Grace will take this unique experience in her stride. She is so deserving to be championing the best of New Zealand’s green fingered fraternity internationally.

Grace Van den Brink in the Hamilton Estate Community Gardens.

ll It all started with Grace’s upbringing. “My dad was bought up on Matakana Island in Tauranga. The soil there is very fertile, volcanic. They grow a lot of food on the island. When dad married mum and moved to Waiuku he worked at the steel mill and mum was a home carer, looking after us seven kids.” The mill became a family affair with everyone working there, and it’s where Grace meet her husband with whom she now has three children. “Dad taught us everything about gardening. Our place wasn’t normal, we didn’t have pretty flowers, we had food. Most people had grass, we had potatoes out the front and corn out the back. We were bought up around food so I guess that started my love for growing vegetables.” About ten years ago Grace and six of her family and friends, started a community garden in Hamilton Estate Waiuku, as a charitable trust. “Both mum and dad were ministers in Te Marama Hou Ministries and so when dad passed on, we just carried on.” Grace humbly describes this Trust as a ‘service in action’. “Not so much as a church Trust. We changed a few things, adding more social services, more about communities

My name is Grace Van den Brink. I’m from Waiuku, this is my home town and I’ve been here most of my life. My passion has always been around people and plants – yip people and plants – that’s me.

Port Waikato Blokes (and community) top $10,000 for Blue September Prostrate Cancer Foundation by cooking breakfast for 130 people, organising an auction of donated items, and raffling local sponsored produce. Each year Blue September focuses on prostate cancer awareness, and for the 6th year running the Bokes of Port Waikato have turned on the best breakfast in the District. The combination of local rural produce, the Bloke’s natural culinary knowhow (a little help from Dave Yorwarth and Mark Necklen) combines to deliver the now famous Port Waikato Blue Breakfast. The breakfast was a fun affair with a meaningful message delivered by Prostate Cancer Foundation Ambassador Tim Beere from Hamilton, Tim was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at 42yrs old, so he gave a very insightful and humorous talk on his experience living with Prostate Cancer. Tim also conducted his first ever auction which was a huge success which combined with the raffle’s raised over $10,000. This is a fantastic effort from a small community with a resident population of approximately 350. We

with Waiuku Museum Todays object is a favourite of Margaret Caffrell who has been volunteering for many years and works tirelessly making sure each item received is documented and accessioned. This 1920’s Orion electric oven came from a property in Bird Rd, Otaua. The museum received it in 2018 in working order! It’s one of the earliest electric ovens. Prior to that people had coal ranges. It’s enamalised cast iron and NZ made. It cannot be safely and legally used now as the wires are all exposed copper with no insulation.

SALE ll On Friday 4 October local Kaumatua, Koro Marangai blessed the newly completed, family owned, Educare centre on Albert Street in Pukekohe. This ‘state of the art’ childcare facility is brand new and purpose built with tamariki in mind by offering different areas for children’s activities like arts and crafts and dress-ups. A large outdoor area with an accompanying vegetable patch enables a nurturing, natural

environment. Children of various ages are considered with a separate baby area with its own sleeping cubby. A fully equipped size-able kitchen with specialist dietitian ensures that special dietary needs are considered. This center is part of the Educare Early Learning Centres family, based in Whangarei and is supported by sister centers, Pokeno and Kitchener Street which were also blessed by Koro.

03/2016 03/2016

This week we dealt with a couple of incidents at various locations, that were both captured on surveillance cameras. In one incident, a local male has been charged with assault after a person was knocked out. In another a local youth has been referred to the Police Youth Aid Section after a person was threatened with a weapon in the town center. In each incident Police were able to obtain the footage from business premises or from the cameras the local business association have installed around town. In the second incident the matter was not even reported to the Police but was brought to our attention. We were able to check the cameras, identify the offender and take action. In today’s society there is cameras everywhere. Most retail or business premises, cameras in town centers around the streets, at prominent locations and there are an increasing amount of residential houses that now have surveillance cameras. So even when you think no one is watching, there is every chance that your actions are being recorded and it may not be your best side that is captured. As the old song says “slow down your going too fast” applies to a lot of Waiuku residents. Saying “sorry about that” when you’ve been stopped doing 20 odd kms over the speed limit, is just plain ignorant of everyone’s safety, including your own. Slow down and make it safe for everyone on the roads. Cheers, Woody

Mayoral Conservation Award to Franklin A combined effort across Franklin and the North West Waikato has seen Predator Free Franklin announced the winner by Mayor Phil Goff in the Collaborative section of the Conservation Awards. Landcare Groups have started to work together including Friends of Te Wairoa, (FOTW), Whakaupoko Landcare and Awhitu Peninsula Landcare. Already there are amazing results and plenty of good news stories as pests disappear from the landscape. There has been excellent financial support from primarily Auckland Council/Franklin Local Board but also Waikato Regional Council and DOC. The initial focus has been with building Community Capability with pest control. This has been by running a series of more than 25 Hub days across the region where free pest control materials have been made available to private land owners along with some information sharing. The Hub days have been incredibly successful with over 1,000 people attending a range of events. Local Board Chair Angela Full James and Alan Cole have been helping out and deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore has been in attendance at the Orere Point and Kawakawa Bay days. They have almost proved too successful, comments both Andrew Sinclair from Whakaupoko and Glenn Richards from FOTW as with attendance well above expectations our budgets are stretched. The focus is about helping out private landowners to ‘do’ the pest control on their own land. It is about being regular with a recommended frequency of five times a year so that fast breeding rats can be controlled as well as other pests.

JOIN A CLUB

It is early days for Predator Free Franklin and a further forum will plan for how they can continue to develop. More Hub days are in the planning stage as they look to build on the momentum. Predator Free Franklin is establishing an extensive network of bird monitoring and trap / bait station data in line with the Predator Free Miramar project. They are fortunate to have the local help of Andy Saunders who is involved with both Trap NZ and an intensive pest control project at Whiriwhiri. Ideally schools will be incorporated in this where already the likes of Otaua School have the infamous Rat Rangers and Patumahoe School have a regular bird survey group. Predator Free Franklin is developing an online presence on www.predatorfreefranklin.nz and people can subscribe to newsletters. The long term goals include clearing rats, possums and mustelids from all the area by 2050. There are some great collaborative opportunities in the Franklin area with the likes of the ‘Mainland islands’ of the Hunua’s and Awhitu Peninsula. We look forward to finding ways of creating an environment and corridors for the many endangered native species in the Hunuas to travel safely out across the whole area comments Andrew Sinclair.

GO ON!

Benefits of Summer Sports

Now that spring holidays are officially underway, you may already hear the complaints from your children, saying, “We’re bored!” or you’ve started to struggle with a chore chart or have become tired of arguing with your child about how much screen time they are having. Spring and summer can be a wonderful change of pace from a busy schedule, it can be a difficult and often times frustrating season. If your child is not already enrolled in a summer sport, here are a few reasons you may want to encourage them to participate in a sport: Exercise During the school year, your child may be active during the day thanks to physical education classes and time on the playground, however, when summer rolls around it may be more difficult to keep the momentum going when it comes to getting exercise. During the first few weeks of summer, it may be easy to get your child to the local pool or to take a bike ride, but after awhile he or she may grow bored. If your child is enrolled in a summer sport that they enjoy, they will get exercise on a regular basis and may be more eager to do more activities outside of practice and games.

Creating a Routine

Although you may want to slow things down in the summer and be a little more spontaneous, creating some kind of a routine is good and will lessen the likelihood of hearing, “What should I do now?” Not only will it provide some structure for your child, but it will make the transition back to the school year much easier.

Socialisation and Healthy Competition Getting involved in any activity provides the perfect opportunity for your child to socialize with peers and extend their social circle. During summer break, many children end up spending their free time with the same children, creating potential boredom and drama. Interacting with new children is always good for developing and improving social skills. In addition to socialising, becoming involved in a sport can allow your child to experience healthy competition. Competition, in general, has a bad reputation and many parents are hesitant to place their child in a competitive situation, but when done right it

can be beneficial. When a child is engaged in healthy competition, they learn how to make a decision quickly, have self-control, maturity and discipline. Additionally, they will learn their limits, set goals, learn how to handle loss and how to work with others (even during conflict).

A Few Tips for Parents While there are many benefits to participating in a summer sport, don’t pressure or force your child to join a sport they have no interest in. As a parent, it’s important to be involved and present at your child’s sporting event (you can help coach, volunteer, etc.), but be a good role model and be a “good sport”.

Newspaper to fashion garment Barbara’s grand-daughter, Hailey is A few weeks ago Barbara Prescott came into the a year one student at the New Zealand Districts Post office requesting if we had any spare School of Tourism. Part of the course is newspapers. She came back into the office last to work collaboratively with classmates week to show us a photo of the end result. to create day and evening wear garments on the theme of Trash to Fashion. The purpose was to create a ‘runway creation with recyclable materials’ and raising awareness about recycling. “I knew grandma had lots of newspapers but I asked her to get more for us. It was basically about selecting a material which I knew was available in large quantities without too much effort” said Hailey. The whole class of 17 worked on the project and competed against a further eight classes. “There were 16 models all showing off the recycled material garments”. Although being the overall winner of the competition, “we won it of course”. Hailey is unsure what the win will mean as “the trainer is away so we won’t find out until they come back”. When asked what their favourite story was from the Districts Post, giggles ensued and Hailey had to admit that they didn’t actually read it when they were Newspaper fashion from the New Zealand School of Tourism year one class AT31. Real food vs Processed food There is no such thing as the perfect diet for everybody. What is great for one person, may be rubbish for another. One recommendation is to choose real food over processed food. So what is processed food? Processed foods are foods that have been altered from their natural state, usually to improve shelf life, make it easier to transport, improve appearance, speed up preparation time, to improve the taste or to make a product cheaper. Whole foods on the other hand, are largely unaltered and appear pretty much as they would do in nature. The amount of processed foods available to us today vastly outnumbers the amount of wholefoods. Unfortunately for us, the food industry is mainly about the money and not so much about keeping us well and nourished. To improve shelf life one might: Reduce the amount of perishable food ingredients (or just use a synthetic similar flavour), add salt (natural preservative), add sugar (natural preservative), add a few chemical preservatives such as various sulphites. To improve taste: Utilise “the golden ratio” i.e. 50% fat and 50%, sugar, which makes for the most delicious and moreish food. Millions of dollars have been spent finding the winning combination of sugar, fat and texture to excite the reward centres of our brains, and make us want MORE. Another way to improve taste is to add MSG (umami flavour) or other forms of sodium. This hyper-tasting food is more than just moreish. The more salt/sodium you eat, the more receptors your tongue makes. This means, if you regularly eat these highly salted processed foods, you will start to find normal food very bland. To make a product cheaper: Reduce the quantity of quality food ingredients and

Fashion snippets Megan Michie - Fashion contributor Sometimes it’s “the little things we do that make the biggest impact” - in life and fashion. This week in store has reminded me of this fact. Whether it be adding a bright red belt to add a pop of colour to a navy and white dress or a fabulous scarf to shirt with jeans. If you’re bigger in the bust a V neck or deeper neckline is going to be more suitable for your shape than a high neck. It creates length between your chest and chin. A long necklace will also create length when your neckline is higher. Add a long necklace and this creates an optical illusion of length - it works, try it. This means that those higher necklines will work for you by simply adding a funky long necklace. When adding a belt - simply pull the belt buckle around towards your side bot directly in the middle. This also creates a far more flattering look. The same if your top or dress ties to the middle - always take it to the side (in line with your hip bone). Just try these little snippets, simple little changes and see how much of a difference it makes. You may find that the top or dress hidden in the back of the wardrobe (that you spent half a weeks wage on) can actually work on you by putting into play these little tricks. Happy dress ups!

increase the amount of cheap fillers like starch, refined wheat, refined sugar or injecting meat with saline. Generally speaking, when comparing a processed food to a whole food we are diluting the original nutritional content and adding undesirable fillers such as sugar, refined fats and salt. So let’s take a look at some of these common natural food additives. Salt: Too high sodium intake is linked to increased blood pressure, which is a risk factor for coronary heart disease. When the doctor orders you to reduce your salt intake (sodium chloride), most people take this to mean they should stop adding table salt to their food. However only a very small portion of our sodium intake comes from table salt. The large majority comes from processed foods. Refined Sugar: Although from a natural source, refined sugar has been heavily processed and contains little nutritional value, yet is very energy dense. This excess energy, if not used, will be deposited as fat. Refined sugar is very quickly absorbed into the blood stream and can play havoc with your blood sugar levels, hormone balance and mental health. Refined Fats: Refined fats refer to highly processed fats that have lost nutritional integr ity and can fuel inflammator y biochemical pathways in our bodies. Choosing more unadulterated healthy fats and less processed is the number one most important dietary change we can make to fight most modern chronic diseases, which are often rooted in chronic inflammation. In summary the result is not only energy dense, nutrient poor food; but foods that actively contribute to disease and disharmony. Stay well Franklin, Kathryn Maffey

Life without 88 extra blocks of butter It all started with an accident that hurt her knee and now 16 months later, Jean Carson is a fraction of her former self. She has lost 44 kilograms! (or 88 blocks of butter). A doctors’ visit identified that Jean was suffering with severe arthritis in both her knees so instead of drugs, she was prescribed a Green Prescription (GRx) and a pair of crutches. “When I first started I couldn’t even get up the stairs. That was how my journey started, I just had to get the weight off my knees,” said Jean. The Green Prescription is about engaging people with health related problems and supporting them to understand more about food, exercise and wellness. “We have learnt heaps of interesting things, I found out that for every kilo you weigh it puts double the weight on your knees. I never thought of it like that. My knees are thanking me (now I have lost some weight) and it certainly isn’t so painful anymore.” The Green Prescription initiative started in 1998 by health professionals and transferred to the Ministry of Health in 2009 with the expectation that any future funding would be more closely aligned with other services helping manage long term conditions. A 2018 Ministry of Health survey indicated that 71 percent of patients reported that they had noticed positive changes in their health since they were first issued with a GRx: The main changes these patients noticed were feeling fitter or stronger, generally feeling better, more energy, weight loss, breathing easier, and feeling less stressed. For the first few months, Jean found that her weight loss journey was not too difficult however over time is has become more arduous. “I decided that I wasn’t going to eat chocolate and ice cream anymore. It worked to start with but now I am cheating a wee bit. I was one of those people who couldn’t stop at one piece, I had to eat the whole lot. I now occasionally eat a piece of dark chocolate cause it’s got less sugar. I don’t like it as much but it gives me the chocolate fix and I only eat one or two pieces.” Part of the process with Green Prescription is to learn about your eating habits and how to partake without excess. “I found out that I am an emotional eater. One lecturer taught us how to break the emotional eating habit.” The wellness process is also about discovering why you are eating excessively and learning how to manage this. “I buried my head in the sand and ignored how big I really was, I was just getting along. When I lost weight, got lighter and had more energy I realised how miserable I was when I was so overweight. It’s hard to explain but I thought I was fine….but I wasn’t. It’s now that I realise it.”

One of the main pieces of advice that Jean has taken to heart is to be aware of what you buy and what is in your house. “If you don’t have it in your house, you can’t eat it. I made a conscious effort not to buy junk food; that is until my husband started complaining that there were no biscuits. I just bought biscuits that I didn’t like. He could sit and eat in front of me and it just didn’t bother me.” Although the expectation to include exercise into your daily routine was difficult for Jean, she now embraces it, “I had to start with pool training because it took the weight off my knees. Now I go every week with a friend and have also included gym workouts. I try to do something every day. It’s just about getting out there and doing it.” “Start today. Your tomorrow depends on what you do today!” Jeans loves her new look and being able to wear ‘regular’ clothes again however she doesn’t take it for granted or consider herself special in any way. The Green Prescription has empowered Jean to take control and she wants to lose a further 30kilograms. “I don’t consider myself an inspiration. I am just me doing my thing but if my story can help even just one person then it’s gotta be a good thing.”

Community group leases granted across Franklin Residents of 20 Rescare facilities across the city can look forward to more holidays at Maraetai after a new lease for its respite care facility on Maraetai Coast Road was granted by Franklin Local Board. Nearly 150 people from 20 homes use the site for a change of scenery and holiday break, giving safe, community-based time away throughout the year for residents and their caregivers and families. The board granted Rescare a 10-year lease with one right of renewal at $1 plus GST if requested. There are also new leases for the Bombay Rugby Club, Clarks and Grahams beaches bowling clubs, the Scout Association and the Clevedon Lawn Tennis Club. Bombay Rugby gets a lease on the Bombay War Memorial Hall, Clevedon Tennis on a portion of the Clevedon Showgrounds Reserve, while Clarks’ bowlers keep their Torkar Avenue home and can sublease space to Clarks Beach Playgroup. Their fellow bowlers at Grahams get a lease on the Domain Recreation Reserve. The New Zealand Scout Association, for Clevedon Scouts, got a 10 and 10 lease on a portion of Clevedon Scenic Reserve referred to as Camp Sladdin that allows for overnight stays; and for Te Puru Sea Scouts it received a lease for a portion of Te Puru Park, though it includes a clause for the landlord to give 12 months’ notice if plans for the park affect the leased area. All seven groups own all or part of their buildings. Where a group owns its building, it can automatically apply for a new lease when its lease runs out.

But most importantly these little guys need lots of love and attention. They make a great addition to the family!

The New Zealand Concrete Contractors Awards (NZCCA) and National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC), held their awards ceremonies last month. Taking away the awards for Best Residential and Best Commercial (highly commended) at the 14 September NZCCA, was Franklin family owned business Wallen Concreting Ltd. Also on the night, 20 year old Jake Wallen won a Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) Apprenticeship award. Younger brother, 16 year old Sam Wallen, received a BCITO Concrete Construction certificate (funded by Gateway Tertiary Education). But wait, there’s more! These young men’s amazing mum, Jodie Wallen took home a certificate for Tradeswoman of the Year (highly commended) at the NAWIC ceremony on 28 September. You could say that concrete is in this family’s blood. Martial Wallen has been laying concrete since he was 15, learning the ropes from dad Marty (Pa) and mum Diane (Ma). Ma and Pa had a very successful concreting business in Manurewa, they were ‘old school’. Pa was very particular with the quality of his workmanship and passed this trait on to Martial. “Working for my mum and dad made me who I am today and I’m very thankful for that,” he says. Growing up in Drury, Jodie was surrounded by men in construction. Her dad Kevin Waldron and older brother Jeff, were builders by trade, however Jeff has now joined the Police. Her brother Steve, is a stonemason and after meeting Martial, it was inevitable Jodie was going to be involved in concrete, one way or another! This amazing couple have been working alongside each other for 20 years now. In that time they have had three children, Jake (20), Max (18) and Sam (16). The boys have been involved with the family business from a very

early age, often working during school holidays. Jake has been working with mum and dad now, full time for almost four years and Sam is getting set to start next year. Max has just started an apprenticeship with R.M. Shore Builders Ltd. Over the years the Wallens have done a huge variety of concrete work, both in residential and commercials sectors. They had the contract at Punchbowl in Karaka with their operations expansions and have been working with Craig Nicholson Earthmoving, building roadways for new subdivisions in Runciman. “We also work closely together with Counties Ready Mix Ltd and other contractors. Actual Concrete Ltd, Berghan Concrete Ltd, Protec Pumps and Radius Pumps. It’s good to have a great working relationship as we often help each other out on jobs.” Jodie confirmed it was really hard to get skilled, reliable, (and drug free) independent contractors in New Zealand. “There was a skill shortage so we had to look overseas to the Philippines to acquire part of our current workforce. It was a mission but well worth it,” she said. After learning they were the recipients of the NZCCA awards, Jodie and Martial were over the moon. “We were very excited and proud to win. We are xtremely proud of our staff that work so hard as a team to make each job a success. Concrete laying is all about teamwork as it is always tough, no matter how big or small the job. It definitely takes a united team to make it happen.” Martial and the team are as equally proud of Jodie for her own achievement at the NAWIC conference. Jodie would like to say a special ‘thank you’ to Counties Ready Mix Concrete who sponsored them so they could all make it on the night. Congratulations for all your recent achievements from us here at the Districts Post.

Why make stink silage? Good silage making is a fine art, explains Chris Balemi, managing director of Agvance Nutrition. On many farms the familiar smell of silage is the sickly cloying smell of butyric acid. This smell gets you ordered to take a shower when you come in for breakfast after feeding out. It’s the smell that makes most townies hold their noses. Many farmers naturally associate this smell with silage. It is prevalent on most farms when silage is being fed. Yet good silage shouldn’t smell at all. The smell signals secondary fermentation is causing butyric acid to form within the silage, and it means the silage has lost some of its nutritional value. Good quality fermentation should be purely based on lactic acid – which has very little smell. What’s going on in the silage? As mentioned, butyric acid forms during secondary fermentation produced by aerobic clostridial bacteria. This fermentation is indicative of decomposition of the naturally formed (anaerobic) lactic acid. Aerobic fermentation degrades much of the original protein in the grass. Some farmers are naturally confused because butyric acid fermented silage is so common here in New Zealand they inherently associate the butyric acid smell with silage. Added to this dilemma, butyric acid fermented silage, while still being nutritionally degraded, can be very stable. Its high acidity levels can make it largely immune to moulds and further degradation. But at this point the cost has already been paid: this butyric acid fermented silage has

lost much of its protein - used up during fermentation. Good silage making is a fine art. Achieving good silage depends on many factors, most notably good timing and good technique. The other factor at play is technology. This one can sometimes turn a sub-standard crop, or one harvested in lessthan-perfect weather conditions, into silage that retains good feed quality. Provided the silage making technique is robust, a combination of high technology harvesting machinery and the use of a quality inoculant can make the difference between good quality silage, ordinary silage or at worst a real disaster. Of course, when everything comes together perfectly, using good technology in the form of a silage inoculant will insure an even better quality end product. New Zealand farmers have the ability to make silage that is as good as anything made on European farms, despite many European farmers treating silage making as a true art form. In a perfect world, silage would be made when a crop was harvested at its nutritional peak, the grass would be dried down to the perfect drymatter level, it would then be harvested with the best technology equipment available and then compressed into a concrete pit designed to exclude all air with an airtight cover seal. But challenges happen. New Zealand weather conditions make it particularly hard during the harvesting season. Add to this problem the fact that grass grows very fast here and at that time of the year there is often a shortage of available harvesting capacity. The result can be silage

Written by Chris Balemi, managing director of Agvance Nutrition

that is harvested at a less-than-optimal time. Weather conditions dictate this and the drymatter level of the ensiled grass may not always be adequate due to crops having to be harvested within very tight weather windows. This is where a high technology inoculant can make all the difference. Bonsilage is a silage inoculant due for

launch in New Zealand this year. Developed and made in Germany by Provita GmbH, it has been successfully used in Europe since 2000. Bonsilage uses specifically selected living bacteria strains formulated to produce superior forage quality under varying conditions.

“She’s a great representative of New Zealand farming. She has a very good appreciation of the importance of trade to New Zealand and to the primary sector,” Feds president Katie Milne says. “Mel can also handle a dog around a hillside better than any man I’ve ever watched, which should be an indication of the patience and skill she will bring to wrangling with international free trade agreements and getting good deals for New Zealand.” Feds wishes her well and we look forward to working closely with her in this role.

Sentinels

Quote; “The apostle sought to teach the believers how important it is to keep the mind from wandering to forbidden themes, or from spending its energies on trifling subjects. Those who would not fall a prey to Satan’s devices, must guard well the avenues of the soul; they must avoid reading, seeing, or hearing that which will suggest impure thoughts. The mind must not be left to dwell at random upon every subject that the enemy of souls may suggest. The heart must be faithfully sentineled, or evils without will awaken evils within, and the soul will wander in darkness. “Gird up the loins of your mind,” Peter wrote, “be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation.” {AA 519}

Quote; “Every thought, word, and act, we should bring to the test of God’s revealed will. In all things the inquiry should be, Will this please God? Will it be in accordance with the teachings of His Word? And when there is an indecision of mind in regard to duty, our natural hearts will plead for indulgence to follow inclination. But let us ever take the safe course, however much self-denial it may involve. Let us be determined to run no risks where eternal interests are involved.

the crown of the victor. When such great and eternal reward awaits us, we should run the race with patience, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

Otaua Calf Club Day Otaua School’s annual Calf Club was held on a sunny Saturday, 28 September. The pupil’s got involved in the big day, sadly no calves this year but goats, lambs and chickens a plenty! PHOTOS: JOYCE BREWER

We have no hesitancy in telling you that in order to obtain the immortal inheritance and the eternal substance, you must be overcomers in this probationary life. Everything that blots and stains the soul must be removed, it must be cleansed from the heart. We must know what it means to be a partaker of the divine nature, having escaped the corruptions that are in the world through lust. Are you willing to wage war against the lusts of the flesh? Are you ready to battle against the enemy of God and man? Satan is determined to enslave every soul if he can; for he is playing a desperate game to win the souls of men from Christ and eternal life. Will you permit him to steal from you the graces of the Spirit of God, and plant in you his own corrupt nature? Or will you accept the great provision of salvation, and through the merits of the Infinite Sacrifice made in your behalf, become a partaker of the divine nature? God has given His only-begotten Son, that through His shame, suffering, and death, you might have glory, honour, and immortality.” {TDG 174-5}

Briar, Eilis and Keeley Roden with their Champion Senior Lamb, Reserve Champion Senior and Junior Champion Lamb.

Danielle Taylor with her champion chicken Sugar.

Dear Reader, guard faithfully your thoughts. Keep every approach to your heart well-fortified. You must put up the bars and Draw Bridge against the approach of Satan. Watchfulness at one point while others are neglected will not avail. The careless neglect of one sentinel will imperil the entire army. The neglect to guard one path to the fortress may prove the loss of the city. There are perils before us which we must meet, and our only safety is in God.

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world. Titus 2:11, 12. The angels of God attain unto no higher knowledge than to know the will of God; and it is their greatest delight to accomplish the perfect will of the heavenly Father. Fallen man has the privilege of becoming intelligent in regard to the will of God. While probationary time is granted us, we should put our faculties to the very highest use, that we may make of ourselves all that it is possible; and while we endeavour to reach a high standard of intelligence, we should feel our dependence upon God, for without His grace, our efforts cannot bring lasting benefit. It is through the grace of Christ that we are to be overcomers; through the merits of His blood we are to be of that number whose names will not be blotted out of the book of life. Those who are final overcomers will have the life that runs parallel with the life of God, and wear

Remember what Balaam told King Balak as to the only way to war and to conqueringly win over God’s People Israel, and that was to get them to sin and that will separate them from their God, and then their God would become their enemy to weaken and destroy them, (wages of Sin), just let sin and corruption into their lives, and just like a bald Sampson, they have no power at all to resist, and their destruction is well assured.

Back to the start, Quote; “The apostle sought to teach the believers how important it is to keep the mind from wandering to forbidden themes, or from spending its energies on trifling subjects. Those who would not fall a prey to Satan’s devices, must guard well the avenues of the soul; they must avoid reading, seeing, or hearing that which will suggest impure thoughts. The mind must not be left to dwell at random upon every subject that the enemy of souls may suggest. The heart must be faithfully sentineled, or evils without will awaken evils within, and the soul will wander in darkness. “Gird up the loins of your mind,” Peter wrote, “be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation.” {AA 519} A Boat Parable; Water outside a Boat is fine, Water within sinks. Sin outside in the world around us is fine, Sin inside destroys, so how good are your Sentinels? Where is Sin; Within or Without? How good are your Sentinels right now?

Henna - an update As a continuation of the misadventures of my youngest, Henna, a young dog who has endured more than most. On July 9, whilst walking down the beach, Henna showed serious symptoms of being unwell and within 12 hours, she had become completely paralysed with acute polyradiculoneuritis (APR), the canine equivalent of the human peripheral nerve disorder Guillain‐Barré syndrome. Although the long-term prognosis was unsure and we were stepping into unfamiliar territory, my partner and I decided that our sweet little friend deserved our best efforts to help. Once we got through the initial stages which indicated that she would survive, as to the period it would take and to what capacity, for her to regain her mobility was approximated at three months. Exactly one month after the onset of her illness, Henna started physiotherapy and then two weeks later, once she was strong enough, she started hydrotherapy. This process, although not cheap supported the best results and improved her mobility and strength incrementally. She was never a confident swimmer but seeing her progression from slight toe waggles to full-on paddling has been miraculous, and I admit tears were shed by all present, when only last week, she ACTUALLY walked across the submerged table!

Eden McDonagh with her champion goat, Louie.

Although short lived and confined to the weight bearing support of the water, it provided the hope I had been yearning for – my girl was going to walk again! That afternoon after regaling this exciting morning episode to my partner, we went about our normal dog routines. I put Henna on the grass while I let the other dogs out of the truck and turned to find Henna walking towards me. No struggling, no noise, no fuss – she just got up and walked. Her first walk was accompanied by lots of hoopin and hollerin and even though it was only for about 20 paces, this was an absolute marathon, and more than this champion had ventured for about ten weeks. This adventure was Saturday 14 September, seven years after my mothers’ demise so I reckon she probably had a hand in helping… Henna’s struggle isn’t over, she still walks like a teenage girl in her first pair of stupidly high heeled shoes, but she can now decide where and when she wants to go and I can sleep soundly knowing that she is once again independent and happy to be alive. I can never thank Tommy Fleun, the specialist vet from VSG, Steph Bonner from Red Dog Rehab, Kath and Kathleen from K9 Aqua enough for their support, encouragement and faith in our little champion. They made all seem possible.

Waiuku College Shooting team take top honours Bowling Club

opening day

The last weekend of September saw Waikato Gun Club host the North Island Champs and Nationals for the 2019 Secondary Schools Clay Target Shooting programme. It was attended by just under 350 students, or 69 squads, from all around New Zealand. Waiuku College sent 17 students, all of whom had trained weekly and attended the monthly competitions. Weather was an array of four seasons in one day, which didn’t make for easy shooting. Josh Baird and Tom Thomas both shot 20/20 in the first event of Single Rise. After a shoot-off, against mainly older shooters, Tom managed to hold his nerve to be placed seventh. No mean feat for a first year shooter. Sunday was another day of changeable weather. And, there was a new programme, shooting 25 Single Rise, 25 Point Score and 15 Single Barrel instead of the 20, 20 and 10 the Josh Baird, Kiel Bell-Tipene, Dylan Burns, Luke Cathcart, Jack Thomas - Waiuku College number one team previous day. With a relatively young team, after winning the Point Score Team event. PHOTO: SUPPLIED the coaches and manager weren’t sure how they would go but the top team of Kiel Bell-Tipene, Luke Cathcart, Jack a score of 357/375 to win the most sought after event, the New Zealand Thomas, Josh Baird and Dylan Burns kept focused, putting into practice Points Score championship team title. The Hamilton Boys were seven everything they had taught throughout the season by coaches Les Clarke, points behind on 350 and Lindisfarne was on 344 to claim the bronze. In the individual section, Dylan Burns shot a possible 15/15 in the Bob Anderson and Mike Tarbitt. There was consistent shooting from the team in all three events but Single Barrel. Having to shoot off against nine others, he secured the it was the Point Score Event which saw them hold their nerve shooting Bronze Medal. With only three points down for the days shooting - 24/25, 73/75 and in heavy rain off the mark on 18 points down. It was then a very nervous wait as only half way through the squads and with the top south island 15/15 - he was third overall. Although the combined totals for the two schools still to shoot, there were a few trips to the score board to keep a days meant that Dylan was selected for the Auckland / Waikato Regional Team to shoot on Monday, he was unfortunately unplaced in his event. check on the results. The coaches and manager would like to thank all the supporters. Finally with all scores in, Waiuku College claimed the top honours on

Clarks Beach Bowling Club season opened on Saturday 14 September 2019. The day was fine and the greens were playing very well for this time of the year.
