‘Unsinkables’ set NZ team rowing record for 100 kilometres in Pukekohe
By Jess Paton jess@districtspost.media
ll A team of ten dedicated people set the New Zealand team rowing record for 100 kilometres on an indoor rower at the Pukekohe Town Square on Saturday 7 September, raising money for charity at the same time. The team, called Unsinkables, dedicated their time and their fitness backgrounds to setting a new record and raised a total of $3,550.00 for the iSport Foundations SportMeToo initiative. The team was rowing from 9am onwards and despite the threatening weather, they enjoyed some sunshine and plenty of entertainment, such as dancing from 8 Count Dance Studio, weetbix challenges, Counties Manukau Steelers tug of war and a ‘Clash of the Codes’ with Counties Manukau Hockey. Louise Ramsay, organiser of the event, said “it was a big achievement on Saturday setting the record. We did it in six hours and 16 minutes. Everyone in the team worked really hard and gave it their all.” She said they are all stoked to have set a good benchmark, and just hope that no one try’s to break it too soon! “Our bodies are definitely aching now,” said Louise. “We can have a well deserved rest and I think a few of us will be avoiding the rowing machine for a while!” She explained that, overall, the day went really well. “We had lots of support from the community. The square was buzzing with people enjoying the entertainment and trying out the challenges - best of luck to those who bought raffle tickets!” The Unsinkables team say thank you to everyone who has supported them through various forms of donations, and a big thank you to those who gave their time to help them run and be a part of the day. “You all made it the successful day that it was,” explained Lousie. “Myself and the team greatly appreciate it.” Louise is passionate about kids being involved in sports and said the event was to raise funds for the kids in our region. “Apart from the physical and mental development they can get from sports, there are lots of positive aspects that kids can learn and acquire through sports such as teamwork, friendships, selfesteem, and achieving good moral principles,” she said. Unsinkables teamed up with the iSport Foundation to help raise funds for their SPORTMETOO initiative. This identifies children that are not engaged in playing sport, either because of the cost of participation or the quality of earlier experience or lack of enjoyment. The initiative helps kids get into sports where there might be a financial barrier stopping them from being involved. Louise said teaming up with iSport and raising funds for their SportMeToo initiative was a good way to ensure that all funds
raised will go back to the kids in this region and get them involved! The iSport Foundation believe every child has a right to be physically active, have access to positive role models and be the best they can be, regardless of their circumstances. By levelling the playing field, educating youth and providing support, the iSport Foundation aims to develop the next generation of young people. The foundation relies on the support of New Zealander’s to help young athletes reach their full potential. Congratulations to the Unsinkables team on setting a national record for a great cause, all in the Pukekohe Town Square!
