Reddam House joins Somerset Lakes One of South Africa’s most successful private school groups, Reddam House, will establish a new school on the 64-hectare residential estate known as Somerset Lakes, located just two kilometres from the historic centre of Somerset West. The Reddam House group of schools was founded by Graeme Crawford, a renowned South African educator, who opened his first school in 1993. In 2000, Reddam House Constantia opened in Cape Town, followed by Reddam House campuses on the Atlantic Seaboard, Bedfordview and in Sydney, Australia. Various other campuses were subsequently opened both in South Africa (Reddam House Waterfall Estate, Reddford House – The Hills and Blue Hills) and abroad. The addition of two new schools in the United Kingdom recently brings the total number to 26. “Our schools are co-educational, non-denominational and independent, affiliated to the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), encouraging students to learn in a relaxed, self-disciplined academic environment,” said Sheena CrawfordKempster, managing director of Reddam House. “We nurture the unique individuality, talent and self-assurance of each student, equipping them to take on the world with poise and confidence. Beware of low commissions

Somerset Lakes is teeming with bass, among other things!

If there is one tactic that residential property sellers should never adopt, it is trying to negotiate the agent’s commission down to ridiculous levels before they start marketing the property or give a mandate to sell. This, says Bill Rawson, chairman of the Rawson Property Group, is a ploy which almost always has disastrous results. “After 43 years in property marketing, I am more than ever convinced that good agents, those achieving the best results for their clients in the shortest possible time, have no need to — and do not — accept commission cuts,” says Rawson. “In many cases they will not only charge a full 7% commission, but they will only accept the mandate if they can have it on an exclusive basis. Clients come to realise very quickly that with such agents, they are now getting a top class service and will achieve top class prices.” On the other hand, says Rawson, estate agents who accept low (for example 3%) commissions are all too often non-performers: the only reason they agree to such commissions is because their lack of success has made them desperate. In general, says Rawson, respect for estate agents has improved since the new educational standards have become mandatory. However, he says, there is still a small minority of agents who should not be in the profession — and these are often the ones who will drop their commissions far too low.

And what a fishing trip it was, as the four friends soon caught no fewer than 15 largemouth bass, weighing between 1,5 to 2,5 kilogrammes each! “We caught them all in just over two hours on Friday evening on surface lures and rubber flukes. The watermelon with red flecks was a real winner. They’re very aggressive fish, so surface baits are perfect,” Ryan observed. “The fish were in excellent condition,” Ryan added, “with many of them being fat with eggs. It’s good to see that they are thriving. Of course, we put them all back again, as we fully support the ‘catch and release’ policy of Somerset Lakes,” he said. If fishing isn’t your cup of tea, residents of the 42-hectare estate will also enjoy using the lake for canoeing, swimming and even sailing. And Somerset Lakes will also have four kilometres of mountain biking and running trails for the adrenaline enthusiast in you, along with a clubhouse, swimming pool and boathouse for good measure. More buyers than sellers in Mostertsdrift The exclusive suburb of Mostertsdrift in Stellenbosch is currently a keen sellers’ market, with far more prospective buyers than stock available in this well-established family area. Marelise Visagie, the area’s Platinum Select Agent for Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, says in an old established neighbourhood like this there are always families that hold on to their properties for generations. She says they have also found that children who grew up in this neighbourhood, more often than not, return to the area when they are ready to invest and settle down. Chairman of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, Lew Geffen, says many national and international companies are headquartered in the area, and it is from these firms that they get both successful employees and clients opting to buy in Mostertsdrift. Visagie says Stellenbosch Primary School, which is in Mostertsdrift, has become one of the most sought-after primary schools in the town. To ensure a place for your child in this school, she says you have to live in the area or apply long in advance. When it comes to good property buys in the area, Visagie says Mostertsdrift offers a variety of properties with an entry level price of around R5 million for free standing homes. “Much of the time, because the land is big but the houses are old, people buy them to renovate or knock down and rebuild.” Historical homes are, of course, an entirely different matter, she says. They can’t simply be knocked down. She says buyers will often renovate homes that are in the region of 800m² to 1 000m² at a cost of R10 000 to R15 000 plus per m². After such renovation projects, Visagie says these homes could easily go back onto the market at the R10 million plus range. She says that while there have been a few sales in this suburb reaching up to R17 million, there are many homes that would probably fetch much higher prices if they were on the market. Visagie says the larger stands bordering the

river are sought after, as are the few stands bordering the Jan Marais Nature Reserve. According to Lightstone, in 2014 only 15 properties worth nearly R70 million were sold in the exclusive suburb of less than 300 homes. Only two of those properties were sectional title. Some 65% of the property owners in the suburb have owned their homes for five years or more, and 40% of them for more than 11 years. “That’s what makes this such a sellers’ market; very few people actually want to put their properties up for sale, and there are more buyers who find Mostertsdrift highly desirable than there are properties available.” According to Lightstone, the vast majority of both established owners and new buyers fall within the 36 to 49 year age category, indicating clearly the family nature of the suburb. On the market is a home that Visagie describes as a fixer-upper built in 1963 at an excellent address surrounded by large renovated homes. The house is selling for R5,5 million. She describes another of the homes as a beautiful architectural home on 1 200 m² of land with mountain views and the capacity to accommodate two families. This home has the added bonus of being in one of two secure complexes in Mostertsdrift, and is on offer for R15 million. Visagie says buyers are mainly from Pretoria in Gauteng and Cape Town’s northern suburbs. “We find that foreign buyers also enjoy the area and appreciate the surrounds.” People will live in Stellenbosch for some time as they wait for the right property to become available in Mostertsdrift. Such buyers are educated and willing to invest in an area that is still one of the most sought after in town, she says. Chris Cilliers, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty principal for Stellenbosch, says Mostertsdrift is unique in many ways. He says it is close to top schools, the University of Stellenbosch, the centre of town, the nature reserve, hiking trails, world-class sporting facilities and is nestled at the foot of the Stellenbosch Mountain with the Eerste River running through it. “There is very little traffic, the area is flat and many children walk, skateboard or cycle to school.” Every day the streets are filled with children, mothers pushing prams, dogs, students jogging and mountain bikers coming through to enter into some of the best tracks in the world, he says. “It’s a slice of Winelands paradise.”

You have lived in a home for a few years, love the area and are happy with where you are, but the home no longer meets the requirements of a growing family.

It’s time to make a decision; do you add on to the home you are in or buy another property that better suits your needs? According to Adrian Goslett, CEO of RE/ MAX of Southern Africa, the decision to move or renovate is one that many South African homeowners will face at some stage of their lives.Henotesthatitisadecisionthatwilllargely be determined by various key factors such as whether the existing home has the necessary space for additional rooms needed to accommodate the family’s changing situation. There is also the question of affordability and which choice makes the most financial sense for the homeowner’s pocket. “There is no right answer to the question as the deciding factors will be unique to the individuals and their specific situation, for each homeowner the choice will have to fit their lifestyle and circumstances. Many homeowners aim to remain in their home for a very long time and therefore purchase a property that they will be able to alter as their budget allows or their needs change. While other buyers purchase a home that is right for them at the time, but know that as soon as their situation changes they will have to relocate,” says Goslett. There are advantages and disadvantages to either option, but there are steps that homeowners can follow to assist them in making the decision a slightly easier one. “The initial step is for the homeowner to determine the value of their property, along with the estimated cost of the required renovation project,” says Goslett. “It is important that the homeowner factors in all costs involved in the project such as the materials and the labour costs of the contractor. Homeowners will need to bear in mind that where projects affect the structure of the home they will be required to get a building inspector to sign off on the plans before ground is broken,” says Goslett. He notes that as a general rule it is advisable to add an additional 10% to the renovation costs to cover any unexpected issues that may occur during the project’s construction. Once a ballpark figure has been determined, the homeowner will be able to compare the cost of the renovation versus properties that they would be able to purchase by adding that amount to their existing bond amount. Depending on how long the homeowner has lived in his or her current property, the market and the home’s appreciation over time, they may have also built up equity that could be used towards the purchase of a larger property. “Depending on the homeowner’s budget and requirements it may be possible for a homeowner to find a property that meets their needs and some added extras such as an additional room, a double garage or proximity to good schools. Of course there is the alternative that they don’t find anything within their price range, which points to the fact that it would be more feasible to undertake the renovation project. One way or the other, comparing apples with apples will help make the homeowner’s decision easier,” says Goslett.

According to Goslett, a major concern when deciding to renovate a property is the risk of over-capitalising. If the home offers more, but has become over priced for the area in which it is situated, it may be very difficult to sell the property at a later stage. “It is vital to find out the average property price in the neighbourhood before renovating or adding to the home. If the renovation costs exceed the average house price, it may be quite a few years before the homeowner would be able to sell their property and recoup the money spent of the project. That said, the decision to renovate or change a home is not always to increase the home’s value or forthepurposesofresale.Veryoftentherenovation is to improve the living conditions or lifestyle of the current homeowners – emotion is often a driving factor in the decision, not cost,” says Goslett. He notes that many homeowners would rather stay in the area for reasons that go beyond appreciation value and as a result choose to renovate. “There are several reasons that people choose to stay in a certain area, such as the fact that they grew up there and it holds sentimental value, it’s close to where they work or their children are settled and happy in the local school. Many homeowners also enjoy the creative freedom and control that they have over a renovation project, such as choosing the materials or fixtures used,” says Goslett. “While living through a renovation can be stressful and often disruptive to everyday life, moving to a completely new home is not without its own set of challenges and costs.” Goslett concludes by saying that there are pros and cons to both options, however each provides the homeowner with the opportunity to move one step closer to owning their ideal property. How to pay off your bond in 10 years Property owners’

f you’ve just bought your first home, the day your mortgage will be fully paid off and the property is really yours probably seems a long way off. Even if you don’t have a spare room to rent out, you can perhaps still make some extra cash to put towards your “bond liberation day” by renting out a storage space, garage or carport. This is according to Shaun Rademeyer, CEO of BetterBond, who says the good news is that there are tried and tested ways to bring that day much closer, and save yourself tens of thousands of rands in the process. “Did you know, for example, that if you have a home loan of R800 000 at an interest rate of 9.25%, you could drop your bond repayment period to 17 years instead of 20, and save R178 000 in interest, just by paying an extra R500 a month into your bond account?” And if you were somehow able to make an additional payment of R2 950 every month, he says you could slash the bond pay-off period to ten years, saving R532 000 worth of interest. Unfortunately, though, most homeowners just don’t have that extra income to

hand over every month, especially if they are first-time buyers. This means they need to find other ways to chip away at their home loan balance and repayment period. Rademeyer shares some expert alternative suggestions: 1. Become a scrooge Start eliminating all unnecessary expenses, review your insurance premiums and put a limit on your cell phone usage. 2. Increase your earnings Take extra shifts at work, sell something at weekend markets or look for some evening, holiday or freelance work to bring in extra income that you can put straight into your bond account. 3. Rent out some space Even if you don’t have a spare room to rent out, you can perhaps still make some extra cash to put towards your “bond liberation day” by renting out a storage space, garage or carport. 4. Make a lump-sum payment If you receive an inheritance, tax refund or bonus, apply it to the principal balance of your home loan. The interest savings are likely to be better than most other investments.

A recent high court judgement highlights the delicate balance of tenants’ right to housing set against the property owners’ common law right to exclusive possession of their property and the State’s obligation to provide adequate housing for South African citizens. Michelle Dickens, managing director of TPN Credit Bureau notes: “Tenant payment information for Q3 2014 reveals 86% of tenants are in good standing; property owners are saddled with 5% of tenants who do not pay their rent. Although not all of these tenants will require legal action to regain possession of the property, the benefit of credit vetting and affordability assessment of prospective tenants should not be under-estimated.” Judgment in the case of All Building and Cleaning Services CC v Matlaila and Others was handed down on Thursday 16 January. In essence the judge made a finding based on the 44-year tenure of the occupants, the fact the occupants were elderly and the real possibility they would be left homeless, and the occupants’ allegation that the current property owners or agents acting on their behalf had attempted to forcibly remove the tenants. For these reasons the court denied the property owner their request for eviction and possession of their property. Elize Le Roux, director at SSLR Inc, previously Steyn, Steyn and Partners, attorney acting on behalf of the property owners, explains: “It is of paramount importance to realise that this is a unique case, it did not originate from a normal lease agreement or auction-bought property, and as such it should not be seen as the way courts typically approach evictions.” Le Roux further points out: “It is the duty of each and every landowner to ensure that

It is of crucial importance to protect these rights in order to preserve investor confidence. For this, SSLR Inc have been instructed to apply for leave to appeal against this decision and will hopefully be able to restore certainty and confidence for property owners.

Ford previews its all-new Ford Focus RS QUICKPIC Ford recently previewed the allnew Ford Focus RS, a high-performance road car that debuts the innovative Ford Performance All-Wheel-Drive, delivering class-leading cornering speed, thrilling performance and unbridled driving enjoyment. The Ford Performance AWD system is based on twin electronically-controlled clutch packs on each side of the rear drive unit. These manage the car’s front/rear torque split, and also can control the side-to-side torque distribution on the rear axle – delivering the “torque vectoring” capability, which has a dramatic impact on handling and cornering stability. During cornering, the rear drive unit pre-emptively diverts torque to the outer rear wheel immediately based on inputs such as steering wheel angle, lateral acceleration, yaw and speed. F1-Trac and E-Diff, the SSC2 now also controls the active dampers which renders the car’s dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new car features very sculptural flanks which are the key to its character. Its large signature air intake scallop is a nod to the original 308 GTB and is divided into two sections by a splitter. The wide front spoiler features a double profile to improve the thermal efficiency of the radiators positioned at the sides. At the centre two pylons are combined with a deflector which channels air towards the flat underbody. The broad, low tail is also dominated by aerodynamic solutions, including an innovative blown spoiler which generates downforce without increasing drag. This works in conjunction with an aggressive ramp angle for the diffuser which features active flaps. The greater height required for the diffuser was achieved by repositioning the exhaust tailpipes. The circular LED tail lights have also been redesigned. In the cabin, the seamless integration of the new satellite control clusters, angled air vents and instrument panel heightens the sense that the cockpit is completely tailored around the driver. Usability was the key word in the design, leading to an extremely sporty ambience that in no way compromises on comfort. There are plenty of classic Ferrari styling elements too, such as the clear separation between the dashboard and tunnel, the multifunctional steering wheel, the control switch bridge and wraparound seats. The graphics and interface of the infotainment screen have also been completely redesigned while the design of the car’s new key takes its inspiration from the car’s cylinder banks and allows keyless starts. Chery stel Tiggo met nuwe voorkoms bekend QUICKPIC Die kompakte Tiggo-sportnutsvoertuig, een van die beste verkopers in Chery se plaaslike passasiersmotorreeks, is vir die nuwe modeljaar van ’n kant af hersien. Die voorkoms is verfris, daar is ’n nuwe, kragtiger 1,6 liter-enjin en die standaard-spesifikasievlak is aansienlik verbeter. Ten spyte van al die verbeterings word die nuwe Tiggo aangebied

Veiligheid was hoog op die Cheryontwerpers se prioriteitslys en die nuwe Tiggo is toegerus met elektroniese stabiliteitsbeheer, dubbele lugsakke en ABS-remme met elektroniese remkragverspreiding. Ook standaard is ISOFIX-hegpunte vir kindersitplekke. Afgesien van die groot verbetering in die standaardtoerustingsvlak kry Tiggo-eienaars nou bykomende gemoedsrus danksy ’n diensplan van drie jaar/75 000 km, ’n fabrieksgesteunde waarborg van vyf jaar/120 000 km en padbystand. Chery is goed verteenwoordig in Suid-Afrika se vernaamste metropolitaanse sentrums, met 31 handelaars wat doeltreffende en gerieflike naverkope-rugsteun verseker. Voordat ’n nuwe of hersiene model plaaslik bekend gestel word, dring Chery SA aan op ’n omvattende toetsprogram – en dit was ook die geval met die jongste weergawe van die gewilde kompakte Tiggo-sport-

Hierdie strawwe bergpas, die enigste verbinding tussen KwaZulu-Natal en Lesotho, is gewoonlik die speelplek van vierwielaangedrewe voertuie, dus kan ’n mens jou voorstel hoe verbaas die plaaslike inwoners moet gewees het toe ’n konvooi van drie Tiggo’s die kruin bereik – net duskant die Lesothogrenspos en 2 874 m bokant seevlak. Chery SA posisioneer die jongste Tiggo as ’n goed vervaardigde en waarde-vir-geld-aanbieding, wat groter is as baie van die kleiner SNV’e wat teen ’n soortgelyke prys bemark word. 26 Mercedes-Benz B-Klas: ‘n ‘B’ vir ‘nog Beter’

Mercedes-Benz het so pas die voorkoms van sy B-Klas motors verbeter en hierdie modelle is nou landswyd op die vloer van sy handelaars beskikbaar. Die B-Klas het met sy bekendstelling ’n hele paar jaar gelede al ’n nuwe segment in die motormark geskep. Daar was die A- en die C-Klas en iewers tussenin, ’n gaping wat gevul kon word. Hoewel hierdie nuwe klas nie regtig in Suid-Afrika wortel geskiet het nie, was dit anders in Duitsland waar die B-Klas steeds ’n wegholsukses is. By ons verkies Mercedes-kopers steeds die C-Klas sedans as die mees populêre model – en dit sal waarskynlik nog so bly, tensy daar ’n kopskuif kom wat met die nuwe weergawe mense twee keer sal laat dink; Suid-Afrikaners hou immers van luikrug-motors. Die nuwe model onderskei hom van sy voorgangers met ’n herontwerp aan die voorkant met groter luginlate, buffer en LED dagligryligte wat hom meer sigbaar op die pad maak. Binne is daar nou ook ’n 8” uitstaande inligtingskerm wat ook as navigasieskerm dien en versoenbaar is met die Garmin® MAP PILOT navigasiestelsel; voorts is daar nuwe instrumentasie aan boord wat meer gebruikersvriendelik is. Die B-Klas het nou ook drie vlakke van toerusting: die Style as intreemodel, maar wat leerbekleedsel insluit; die Urban met sy allooiwiele van 17” en ekstra afwerking binne en dan die topmodel met sy AMG-stilering waarvan die 18” allooivel-

lings direk uit die AMG-fabriek stam. Die duurder modelle onderskei hulle ook met dubbeluitlaatpype agter. By die bekendstelling was die twee dieselmodelle vir die joernaliste beskikbaar: die B200 CDI en B220 CDI. Op die oog af lyk die B200 se spesifikasie of dit ’n tweeliter is. Dit is egter nie die geval nie. Albei modelle gebruik die 2 143 cc viersilinder turbodieselenjin, maar die verskil lê in die swart kassie se elektronika: die B200 ontwikkel 100 kW en stel 300 Nm vry; by die B220 lê die syfers by 125 kW en 350 Nm onderskeidelik. Wat interessant is, is die feit dat die sterker enjin minder skadelike gasse vrystel as die standaardenjin, en dat daar nie koolstofbelasting op die vinniger een is nie, al versnel hy uiters goed van 0–100 km binne 8,3 sekondes en laat hy die naald draai by 224 km/h, teenoor die 210 km/ vir die standaard B-Klas. MercedesBenz gee die uiters lae verbruik aan van tussen 4,1 en 4,3 F/100 km. In die praktyk sal die verbruik na alle waarskynlikheid hoër wees. Die pryse vir die twee diesels is onderskeidelik R404 200 en R448 000. Die petrolmodelle kom in twee groottes: die 1 595 cc turbo-enjin wat 115 kW uitskop en teen tussen 1 250 rpm en 4 000 rpm 250 Nm vrystel en die 1 991 cc turbo-eenheid wat ’n indrukwekkende 155 kW ontwikkel en ’n ewe indrukwekkende 350 Nm tussen 1 200 en 4 000 rpm beskikbaar stel. Die brandstofverbruik is natuurlik swaarder as by die diesels, maar die vervaardiger dui aan die brandstofverbruik vir die twee modelle is tussen 5,6 en 6,1 F/100 km. Pryse is natuurlik laer vir hierdie twee teen R388 300 en R464 800 vir die meer begeerlike een met sy sportiewe gedrag waarin hy die blitsren van 0–100 km/h in minder as 6,8 sekondes kafdraf. Al nadeel is die petrolmodelle se koolstofbelasting wat aan die hoë kant is. Hoe maak hierdie super-luikrug op die pad? Hantering is uitstekend op goeie en swak teer, soos ’n mens van ’n Mercedes verwag. Hoe hy op grondpaaie gaan vaar is nie bekend nie, behalwe dat die grondvryhoog-

te beperk is. Bande met ’n hoër profiel eerder as ’n breë spoor kan moontlik ’n opsie wees. Maar van bande gepraat: soos die moderne neiging by veral Duitse motors is daar nie ’n spaarwiel nie, net ’n spuitkan met lugdruk en doepa om lekbande te herstel. Kopers kan dus maar eers vra wat ’n spaarwiel gaan kos voor die finale koopprys bepaal word. Met ruim bagasieruimte kan die B-Klas heelwat punte verdien by gesinne wat langpad lekker wil ry. Ons het nie die bagasieruimte gemeet nie maar glo dat dit meer kan wees

Volkswagen up! – an affordable, grown-up car HANJO STIER All is well again in the car industry. Having recently introduced new or refreshed versions of their Jetta sedan, Caddy and Kombi MPV’s as well as the Touareg luxury SUV, Volkswagen is finally doing their name proud (people’s car) with the local launch of their “up!” small city car. The German giant holds a dozen other brands in its group and whereas all their VW passenger car products shine with decent value and superb craftsmanship, most are beyond the financial reach of the carbuying masses. Volkswagen of South Africa knows this too well, which is why they sell the Polo Vivo. And boy, do they sell them. The old Polo platform with local content and decent specifications is backed up by one of the highest dealer counts in the country, at prices which graze the upper regions of what Joe Public can afford (starting at about R145 000). So will this newer, smaller car be cheaper? Before we get to the prices, you need to know a bit more about the up! Built since 2012 in Slovakia (which also manufactures Touaregs), the up! is also rebadged and sold as a Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii – two of VW’s less premium brands. It’s actually quite grown up and sensible. Roomy too, as it happily accommodated two tall adults with ease. Rear space and access is a little tight, but the boot is class-leading (251–951 L) and Volkswagen South Africa will only sell you a two-door

up! (four-door available overseas) to protect its four-door Polo Vivo market. So does that mean it’s actually cheaper? Patience, patience. VW sells two versions of the up! called Take up! and Move up! The base model has ABS, four airbags, power steering, daytime running lights, ISOFIX mountings, central locking, immobilizer, folding rear bench, trip meter, air-conditioning, full-size spare wheel, adjustable driver’s seat and

steering wheel. Move up! tops that with power windows and mirrors, a sound system, more seats adjustments and split rear bench, shiny interior trim and additional exterior colour coding, vanity mirrors, rev counter, optional alloy wheels and optional pearl black dashboard. A panoramic sunroof is optional for both models. VW also offers various packages including heated seats and fog

lights, extra speakers, cruise control, multi-function display and rear parking sensors for the Move up! As mentioned earlier, front passenger space and comfort is exceptional and we found the build quality to be on the usually excellent Volkswagen standards. Noise, vibration, ride harshness and side winds are near absent while the 1-litre three cylinder petrol engine (55 kW, 95 Nm) delivers a relatively perky punch via a slick five-speed manual gearbox to the front wheels. Clutch, brake and steering feel is also commendable and perfect for city commuting. High-speed excursions aren’t too bad either and the up!’s tall fifth gear is built for cruising and possibly chasing after its claimed 4,7 F/100 km average consumption. CO2 output is just 108 g/km. And just for the record, an up! is 3,54 m long, 1,49 m high, 1,64 m wide and has 144 mm of ground clearance. So it’s smaller than a Polo Vivo and – are you ready? – it’s cheaper than one too! Take up! costs R134 500 and Move up! just R140 500; slightly less than a base Vivo. Included in these prices is a 3-year/120 000 km warranty with various service plans available as optional extras. Considering its direct price competitors, in-house Vivo playmates and expensive lifestyle rivals, I still can’t believe that the Volkswagen up! is available at such good prices. Yes it’s small, but it’s big on features, large on space and huge in quality. I so would sign on the dotted line for one of these. I so would. – Galimoto Media

28 Nissan ready for round two with more Juke Donderdag

QUICKPIC Nissan’s design team has given the world’s first B-segment crossover a concentrated dose of Juke-ness for its 2015 upgrade. The new 2015 Nissan Juke reached dealers at the end of January and promises to repeat its sales success with redesigned front and rear styling and a significant upgrade in luxury specification. “The Juke is a surprising vehicle in many respects,” says Konstantin von Vieregge, general manager of marketing and planning at Nissan South Africa. “Apart from its unique styling, the slightly irreverent Nissan Juke has surprised market-watchers with its performance and its appeal to styling enthusiasts of all ages, both male and female. “This is why more than 500 000 people across the globe have gone for a Juke since its global introduction in 2010. In South Africa, we have maintained a near 300 unit average a month since its introduction in 2011, selling close on 12 000 units in the period to date.” The refreshed Juke retains many of its favourite elements, such as the sporty sloping roofline, SUV stance and hidden rear door handles, while updating many other elements to align with the current popular Nissan crossover design language. Viewed from the front, all three levels of lighting have been given more prominence, starting with the fog lights that nestle in a newly designed black air intake and rede-

signed colour-coded bumper. The rounded fog lights with new clear lenses take centre stage and flank a new grille with grated design and a bolder SUV-style Nissan badge. This badge cue is repeated in the centre console instrumentation and at the back of the car in the diffuser design. The most dramatic and visually enticing change is found in the uppermost-lights that have been completely redesigned and which joins the family of modern Nissan crossovers with its boomerang shape and integrated daytime running lights – a standard feature across the entire Juke range. On the flanks the new side mirrors with turn signals are squared off and bolder, and in the Tekna specification integrate wide-angle cameras that link to the rear and nose camera to offer 360 degree visibility when manoeuvring the Juke. New alloy wheels complete the package and have been inched up from 16” to 17” on all but the 1.2 DIG-T Acenta model and from 17” to 18” on the Tekna models. The rear of the Juke has been given a similarly dramatic upgrade with a new luggage door with wider number plate area, and the new diffuser and rear air dam have been redesigned to create a wider and more purposeful stance for the Juke. Other changes to the rear of the car include the new roof-mounted aerial, completely redesigned rear lights that mirror the front lights and pay homage to Nissan streetstars such as the 370Z, redesigned

The new 1.2 DIG-T (Direct Injection Gasoline-Turbo) engine, which debuted on the new Qashqai, replaces the normally aspirated 1.6 litre petrol engine that powered the entry-level Juke models. The 1.2 DIG-T engine features a turbo and intercooler and offers 85 kW at 4 500 rpm and 190 Nm of torque in a completely flat band from 2 000 rpm to 4 000 rpm, which means that compared with the engine it replaces, the new 1.2 DIG-T gives the driver near 30% of the engine range back to play with under full power delivery. tion of 5.6 litres/100 km, a figure made possible by the standard fitment of Stop/Start technology The second petrol engine is the highly popular 1.6 DIG-T. Equipped with the same technology as the 1.2 DIG-T, such as an intercooler, Start/Stop technology and direct petrol injection, this engine has no less than 140 kW at 5 600 rpm and 240 Nm in a wide band between 1 600 and 5 200 rpm on tap. This engine propels you to 100 km/h in 8 seconds and uses 6,9 litres of fuel in a combined driving cycle. The last of the turbo-charged engines is the equally popular 1.5 dCi turbo diesel engine. It is also fitted with an intercooler and has common rail direct injection to offer 260 Nm between 1 750 and 2 500 rpm and 81 kW at 4 000 rpm. The 1.5 dCi Juke reaches 100 km/h in 11.2 seconds and only sips an impressive 4,2 litres of diesel in a combined driving cycle. on the model and engine choice. The XTronic gearbox has been upgraded to offer 17% greater ratio speed and 40% less internal friction, which promises to make this transmission even more popular among traffic-weary city dwellers. The Juke has also retained the option of a 4WD system with Nissan’s proven torque vectoring system. This system constantly calculates power delivery to all four wheels to neutralise understeer and track the Juke on a more neutral path through fast corners. This system is further bolstered by the fitment of a multi-link rear suspension. The Juke retains the unique driving control system in the Nissan I-CON system, which allows the driver to select and customise driving modes, with pre-set options for Normal, Sport and Eco driving.
