Fighting the inferno

Firefighters battled a vegetation fire in the Helderberg mountains above the Helderberg Nature Reserve yesterday (Wednesday). Theo Layne of Fire and Rescue said the blaze started in the early hours of yesterday after a fire in the Jonkershoek Pass spread. Poor visibility earlier in the day delayed waterbombing by helicopters. By midday Koos Jordaan, Lourensford CEO, said firefighters were deployed to the slopes of the mountain and that the fire was controlled. He was grateful for the support of the community. JONG MAN DOODGESKIET: DWELMS, VUURWAPENS ’N GROOT PROBLEEM

in Mandela-rylaan gebeur. Niemand is in dié voorvalle beseer nie.

Volgens Williams is daar sowat 14 dwelmhuise in Sir Lowry’s Pass.

Proposal on table for N2 arrestor bed DALEEN FOUCHÉ

) A Strand resident (59) will appear in court today (Thursday 12 March) after allegedly discharging his firearm in a residential area. Strand police say the suspect was walking in De Beers Road, Strand, when he was allegedly accosted by a suspected robber. The suspect then set off his firearm and was later arrested for discharging a firearm in a municipal area. ) A Lwandle man (29) was arrested this past weekend by the Metro Police for being in possession of tik (122 g) and cocaine (4 g) worth R10 000. The drugs were found in the ceiling of the man’s home. He appeared in court on Monday 9 March.

Authorities are moving ahead with plans for an arrestor bed at the bottom of Sir Lowry’s Pass. Two lives have been lost in the last two years when runaway trucks ploughed into motorists at the bottom of the pass approaching Somerset West. On Monday the same tragedy nearly played itself out again when a truck coming down the pass allegedly failed to break. The truck hit the back of two stationary cars that were waiting for the traffic lights at the Gordon’s Bay turn-off to turn green. No injuries were reported. It was at this intersection that Wynand Cillié (22) lost his life in December last year when a runaway truck crashed into him. Two years earlier, 25-year-old Thelana Kotze, a teacher from Stellenbosch, was killed when her small Nissan bakkie landed under the wheels of a heavy-duty runaway truck. A petition was started last year to install an arrestor bed at the pass to bring runaway trucks to a stop. Al-Ameen Kafaar, spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works, says a feasibility study has

The truck involved in an accident at the intersection of the N2 and Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road on Monday. been completed. He says the study showed the road reserve is not wide enough to build an arrestor bed on the proposed site, adding that additional road reserve will have to be gained from the neighbouring nature reserve. Kafaar further says that in order for

the Department to gain the identified land, an Environmental Impact Assessment has to be done that includes a public participation process. This appointment will only happen after the end of March, or during the next financial year, starting 1 April.

Suspects of illegal possession of drugs, firearms in custody The two men who were busted with more than R450 000 of tik and mandrax, and firearms last Saturday faced the court earlier this week. Anwar Jacobs (26) and Zahicari Gardener (29) appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on charges of the illegal possession of drugs and firearms on Tuesday. Police arrested the two on the premises of a tow-truck company

AECI to sell off land DALEEN FOUCHÉ

The massive landholding known as Paardevlei may have new owners before the end of the year. AECI, the current landowner, confirmed to DistrictMail this week that it is considering various offers for the more than 740 hectares that constitute the bulk of the Paardevlei landholding. The current value of the land is an estimated R545 million. Fulvia Putero, spokesperson for AECI, says the reason for the sale of Paardevlei is because property development is not part of AECI’s core business. Putero adds that AECI would like to see the deal concluded this year. DistrictMail reported previously that once developed, Paardevlei could constitute an entire new town. Previous plans to develop the land in various precincts would have seen the land transformed into mixed use nodes that would include residential, commercial and industrial development. Benedicta van Minnen, ward councillor for the area, says this will most likely still be the

case. She has been following the changing plans of the Paardevlei landholding closely for several years now and says that although several proposals have been on The borders of the massive Paardevlei landholthe table, the core strategy for the develop- ding that is currently for sale. ment at Paardevlei has always been mixed land use.

The court case against Jaco Truter, the owner of En Route Towing, and two of his employees, John MacFarlane and Jacobus MacFarlane, has been postponed until Tuesday 31 March. The three men appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court again last Thursday (6 March) on charges of assault stemming from an incident on Tuesday 3 February. A fight broke out after several tow truck-

ing companies responded to a minor accident on the corners of Bizweni and Schapenberg Roads at 07:45 that morning. Truter admitted to DistrictMail that he had hit the Somerset West driver in an attempt to calm him down after he became aggressive towards the driver of the Toyota Tazz that had crashed into his MercedesBenz. The Somerset West man and his wife also allegedly hurled racial insults at the Tazz’s driver and his daughter, who was in the car at the time.

RUGBYSPELER STERF NÁ INEENSTORTING BY OEFENING

Nazeem sê Muneeb was andersins in goeie gesondheid.

Young rugby player’s death shocks rugby community MARK STUART The death of the young Strand United rugby player Muneeb Fanie (21) during rugby practice at the Gustrouw sports grounds on Wednesday 4 March, has left the tightknit local rugby community in shock. According to Muneeb’s father, Nazeem Fanie, Muneeb suffered from a genetic heart disorder that resulted in the thickening of the walls of his heart. Nazeem said that besides this, Muneeb was in good health. A player who was training alongside Muneeb on the day said everyone was taken by surprise when he collapsed, but they did all they could to help him. They quickly got a car onto the field and rushed him to hospital. He said Muneeb was going flat out at practice and was not holding back at all. He looked fit and healthy.

He added that there are always fully qualified first-aid personnel at matches, but never at practices. The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) has made it mandatory that no rugby matches in the province may start without first-aid personnel being present. However, this rule does not extend to practice sessions. Danny Jones, WPRFU head of amateur rugby, emphasises though, that all clubs have to have either level 1 or level 2 qualified coaches, which includes first-aid training, as well as BokSmart qualified personnel. BokSmart is the South African Rugby Union’s safety programme, developed in association with the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. In light of what happened to Muneeb, players at several local clubs have since indicated that they would like to see fully trained first-aid personnel present at all

practices. They said this was because most clubs had at least three 90 minute practices a week and matches were only 80 minutes long. A spokesperson from one of the clubs said they have fully trained CPR personnel at all their practices. He said there was also a trauma board on the premises and they ensured that personnel who were already BokSmart, updated their training every two years. Another local club’s spokesman said they had first-aid personnel at all practices, as well as at all games. He believed that all clubs should have first-aid staff at practices and those that did not should get people trained and ask them to attend all practices. He said at the very least that they should have direct contact with doctors or with a qualified St John’s First Aid staff member.

6 DistrictMail Minister ‘extremely concerned’ about H’berg Hospital

Nuus News

12 Maart, 2015

There is still no commencement date or site for a planned new government hospital in the Helderberg. The provincial health department confirmed that it plans to replace Helderberg Hospital with a new, larger facility, but could again not provide any further information or a timeline for the planned facility. “The decision on the exact location and the start of construction for the new hospital has not been finalised. It is dependent on in-

puts from other directorates and departments such as the Department of Transport and Public Works,” says spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube. Last week DistrictMail reported on the department’s interim plans to bring relief to the facility (“Hospital upgrade on the cards”, 5 March). The department announced plans to add an extra 14-bed overflow observation ward to the hospital, while it also believes the opening of the under-construction Community Day Centre

(CDC) in Asanda Village, Nomzamo, will offer some relief. Following DistrictMail’s media query to the department, which included outcry messages from the community, provincial health minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo conducted an unannounced visit to the hospital on Wednesday 4 March, to evaluate the conditions at the facility firsthand. “I am extremely concerned about the state of this health facility and the quality of the service our clients are receiving due to massive challenges that we face

PALM TYRE

at the hospital,” she said in a statement. “Presently, Helderberg Hospital does not have the capacity for the large patient load that it is handling.” Furthermore, Mbombo again labelled the planned new hospital as a “long-term” plan, despite it also carrying the tag of a “priority to the department”. “This is why many measures are being put in place to meet the growing demands of the people in the area.” In the statement, Mbombo sets

out the department’s short-, medium- and long-term goals for effective health care in the Helderberg. This included the construction of a new Community Health Centre to replace the Strand CDC and Gustrouw CDC, as these facilities are “not appropriately capacitated to deal with service pressures in the respective communities”. “Incremental changes will be implemented while we work towards our grand goal of supplying a regional hospital, a new CDC and CHC,” she concluded.

FOCUS ON STREET PEOPLE: Local organisations and churches joined forces during a workshop this past Saturday to find solutions and workable measures to assist street people in the Helderberg. Andy Loughton, chairperson of the Local Network of Care (LNOC) says the need for more shelters in the Helderberg, as well as an assessment centre were highlighted during discussions. The problem of drugs and alcohol that are freely available on the streets was also discussed. BEGUNSTIGDES RAADOP

Wahab sê alle Sassa-kliënte is teen 14:36 by die Strand-stadsaal betaal.

Volgens konst.

Decision pending on SW CBD A decision on the proposed Somerset West Special Ratings Area (SRA) will be made at the end of this month when the City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee meets. The proposal entails that commercial property owners pay additional rates that will be managed by an organisation to improve safety in the CBD, and to clean and beautify this area. The application for the Somerset West SRA was submitted in October last year after 50%-plus-one property owners gave their consent for the application to be submitted.

The proposed business plan for the Somerset West SRA suggests three armed guards to patrol the CBD on foot and one vehicle with two armed guards. In addition to this, the budget makes provision to hire a Law Enforcement officer through the City of Cape Town’s Rent a Cop initiative. The proposed budget for the first year is R2,1 million, with R1,2 million to be spent on security. The steering committee has already spent R70 000 to get the application off the ground, said Magel Grové, who serves on the committee.

FOTO: SOMERSET 1

Van Breda-dossier nou by NVG

Hy woon tans by familie. Adv.

Ban all butt-throwers Can we start a “no butt out of window” campaign? I took a photo of a smoker’s car in Main Road, just before the Scholtz Road turn-off, at 07:47 on Tuesday 3 March. The driver threw a burning cigarette butt out of the window – this while we could see the clouds of smoke over Muizenberg!

GERDA WEBSITE COMMENT

Community must take hands to root out taxis’ noise pollution I’m a resident of Macassar and the noise made by the taxis with their so-called music is a real bone of contention. I have, on numerous occasions, called on the police, but their response was not satisfying. I even contacted the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement, but this too was to no avail. Noise pollution is not something authorities can be bothered with. With complete arrogance, the taxi drivers are terrorising our

communities and bullying us to desperation. My other concern relates to the children these “gentlemen of the roads” are transporting. Already our schools are struggling with discipline and poor performances from learners. I wonder how many of our children have to go for regular hearing tests. Can they really hear what the teachers are teaching after many years of exposure to this deafening

People who make life worth living I would like to thank the staff of the Total Service Centre in Main Road, between Philwest and Lion’s Square, for helping me when I was in great difficulty and very ill last month. Throughout the night they all went beyond the requirements of their job descriptions, although they were very busy. With their friendliness, it is easy to see why Bonjour is so popular.

Also, a special “thank you” to the manager of Helderberg Crime Watch: you stopped on your way home from work at 22:00 and offered all possible assistance. You men are the salt of the earth and I will always remember the kindness of your caring behaviour. Well done, Somerset West!

JANE WEBB STRAND

and ruinous noise? I’m calling on the assistance of the community; maybe the principals and the provincial Department of Education will do something about this terrible scourge of our peaceful communities. These drivers, who call themselves a service to the public, are in many ways more of a hindrance. The few good ones must be exonerated from this complaint.

JAMES DE WET EMAIL

Good Samaritan returns lost wallet Thank you to the honest lady who found my wallet in a trolley outside Checkers in Somerset West on Thursday 19 February between 09:00 and 10:00. I highly appreciate it. Also, a big “thank you” to the floor manager who informed me that it had been found.

jaarsdag.

) It is with shock and sadness that I saw on the news that one of our chopper pilots, Willem Marais, died fighting the Cape Point fire, during a forced landing. I saluted the fire fighting chopper pilots in this column on 26 February, never once thinking that for one of the pilots it would be the last salute. Trevor Hawley, Gordon’s Bay ) Please remove the bogus disabled beggar at the Victoria Road/ N2 intersection. He almost caused an accident when he pretended to fall next to my car. I do not find him amusing. Nelia ) To the man driving the blue Jeep in Broadway Road, Strand at 17:50 on Friday 6 March: stop using the earth as your ashtray. Fires ablaze and you proceed? ) Gary Harrison, from Afrigas in Strand, thank you for the excellent service. Soraya ) Mev. Stabbed in Hell Run zone ) It is so sad that so many people’s lives are in danger on our national roads. Why can’t the police arrest people walking on our national roads? To my knowledge, people are not supposed to walk on the national roads. There are also people picking up workers on the N2 near Somerset West and nothing is being done to stop it. Why can’t they pick up their workers on the roads leading to the N2? William Moses ) I agree, William Moses. Anyone walking on a national road should be picked up by the police. Our beautiful country is lawless, because our government is lawless. And no, another meeting about the situation will not help; action will. Trudy Davies Accident recorded on a dash camera ) Well now, we can clearly see that someone took a gap that was misjudged. We have our gopro stand in both cars. You see some interesting things. Wendy Strauss

) Total disregard for laws of road. Hopefully no one was injured. Jen Douglas ) Where can one buy the dash camera? June Smith ) We have one; bought it at Top CCTV. It is mostly used to track our business vehicles’ comings and goings. It has GPS as well. Claudette Groenenstein ) I use one since I was in court for a traffic case. Now the judge can choose to believe what others say or see and hear what really happened. Costa Dirk ) Yes, I would definitely install it. Many times the videos of these dash cameras reveal valuable footage, especially in accidents and criminal activities. Naomi Sinden ) It would have helped me tremendously with my accident on Wednesday 4 March. A taxi skipped a stop street and smashed into my car, occupied by my daughter and I. It should be made law for taxis to have dash cameras permanently running and checked by traffic officers weekly. Annemarie Pretorius ) Dit was my dogter wat betrokke was in hierdie ongeluk. Johlene Cloete

Werkloosheidversekeringsfonds (WVF) Werk Vir Jou. Hoekom is daar ’n WVF ? 5.Afhanklikheidsvoordele Die oorlewende man of vrou is geregtig op die voordele.

7. Indien die bydraer voordele ontvang volgens ’n werkloosheidskema of fonds ingestel ingevolge die Wet op Arbeidsverhoudinge of deur ’n Bedingingsraad. 8.

Sherwood-Manenberg started the day on 23/3 and lost their fourth wicket on 43 after 15 overs, when J Fortuin made the first breakthrough for the day. Wickets then fell at regular intervals and Sherwood-Manenberg were struggling on 112/8 after 40 overs. They were all out for 151 after 48 overs just before lunch. The best bowlers for Macassar were J Fortuin 21-5-40, C Adams 6-1-11, S Levendal 4-1-31, N Swartland 6-1-18. Macassar then needed 157 to win in 77 overs.

They started their innings after lunch and lost their first wicket in the second over, with only eight runs on the board. T Kemp (23) and Q Bowman (10) put together a third-wicket partnership of 31 runs before both were dismissed with the score on 39/3 after 11 overs. Macassar then lost three more wickets in quick succession. With the score on 58/6 and requiring 99 runs to win, J Fortuin and S Jantjies stepped to the crease. They attacked the visitors’ spin bowlers, scoring a 90run partnership for the seventh wicket partnership, to take the score to 147/7 in 46 overs, before Fortuin was out for 65 runs. S Jantjies (34*) and A Roberts (3*) took Macassar past the target required. Macassar Cricket Club’s final two-day game is away to Kensington.

Helderberg won the toss and decided to bowl first and restricted Somerset West to 187/8 in their allotted 60 overs. The best bowlers for Helderberg were Dexter Hindley with 2/24 and Adrian van Reenen with 3/78. Helderberg came in to bat and scored 227/7 in their 60 overs. Outstanding performances from opening batsman Thomas Smith (82) and Johan Cyster (35) laid the foundation. They were well supported by Mario Bougaard

The victorious HHCC team who clinched the Western Province 1 Division D title after beating Elsies-Northlink by nine wickets in their twoday match on Saturday 7 March.

HHCC wins 1 Division D league title by a mile Hottentots Holland Cricket Club (HHCC) clinched the Western Province 1 Division D trophy on Saturday when they beat Elsies-Northlink by nine wickets in their two-day match. HHCC batted first on day one and scored 227 and Elsies-Northlink were all out for 111 and had to follow on. Elsies-Northlink showed some fighting resistance on day two but the HHCC bowlers were again too good for them and bowled them out for 166. The pick of the HH bowlers were: A Temoor 3-67, E Pedro 2-11, G Moller 2-18 and W Martin 2-20. This left HHCC with a target of 51 runs needed to win the match and league honours.

They secured the victory in the 12th over with only one wicket down. The top scoring batsmen were R Van Reenen (24*) and E Pedro 22. This was another outstanding performance by the hard-working and dedicated HHCC first team, who were undefeated in eight twoday league games (winning six of these by an innings and two by nine wickets), a milestone which the Strand cricket community can indeed be proud of. All cricket lovers are urged to support their teams on Sunday 22 March when HHCC meet local rivals Somerset West at Radloff Park to battle it out for the WPCA first Division D 50over league title.

(23) and Damian Jooste (*23). This gave Helderberg a first innings lead of 40 runs, and valuable first innings bonus points. In the visitors’ second innings, the middle order suffered a huge collapse after lunch and were bowled out for 195. Johan Cyster took 4 wickets in 4 overs and was the main reason for the collapse. This inspired the home side, who needed 155 runs for a victory. Smith (59), stepped up to the crease and was well supported by Shane Fredericks (44*) and Cyster (44*). Helderberg soon reached their target with 8 wickets standing.

Great kob catches reported near Agulhas During the lull in the South Easterly wind on Sunday morning a number of local “die hards”, fishing off Blake’s Beach, resorted to spinning after noticing a flock of sterretjies diving onto bait fish close to the beach. Most of the activity was between the Strand swimming pool and in front of Welgelegen flats. Pieter Brink and his wife Hillary, both members of False Bay Angling Club, led the way. Pieter caught and released six leervis of ± 73 cm, while Hillary beached and released a leerie of 83 cm. All the leervis were foul-hooked in the dorsal fin. A number of other anglers also conversed on the couple, also catching and releasing some size leer fish. A few locals fishing on the reefs caught smaller kob and some size galjoen. Leonard Engelke reported that the local kabouter team had a clean sweep while fishing in the five species competition hosted by Ashton Fishing Club in the Struisbaai area. Around 200 anglers took part. The kabouter club located a sheltered stretch of coast between Brandfontein and Agulhas where they caught 30 kob with a total weight of 77 kg (6 anglers). Frans Marais had best bag of 22 kg followed by Joe le Roux with 18 kg. Third was Leonard Engelke with 16 kg. He also had the biggest fish, which weighed in at 11,8 kg. Unfortunately, due to rough water, very few anglers from other clubs weighed in fish. J.D. van der Merwe won the Gordon’s Bay Rock and Surf Angling Club competition, also held on Saturday, with two galjoen and two dassie. Second was Hugo Krynauw with a kob of 4 kg and third Christo Botha with a kob of 3,75 kg.

While shore angling from “die walle” at Struisbaai, Alan du Plessis reported a number of anglers having good catches of kob. He tagged and released 5 kob between 2 kg and 6 kg using fresh chokka. During the weekend the South Easter kept most of the small boats off the water. There were however a few kob taken by two kayakers fishing close to the Poort. Gus Rautman said that very few boats from the Simon’s Town side of False Bay could go to sea. He and his crew busied themselves catching plenty of mackerel just outside the harbour while fishing on “Kiora”. There were also reports of shoals of mackerel inside Cape Town docks and also at the waterfront entrance. It appears this is the first time that mackerel have been reported in the entrance of the waterfront. Due to the sudden changes of water temperature there is very little bubble weed and other sea weed in the shallows and on our beaches. There is however a substantial amount of red bait, which has been washed ashore all along the coast. This should be collected and stored and preserved for use now that the galjoen season is once again open. For all your reel repairs and services, contact Art on 021 854 3831. Send your fishing news and photos to bjridgway@telkomsa.net.

The members of Team KUBOTA Western Cape had a clean sweep while fishing in the five species competition hosted by Ashton Fishing Club in the Struisbaai area last weekend. They are (from left) Leonard Engelke, Joe le Roux, Chris Bester, Floors Marais and Charl Conradie.

Barracudas Berge verloor eerste lift the trophy vriendskaplike stryd Somerset West Cricket Club’s juniors had a mixed bag of results this past weekend. The u.10s travelled to Durbanville with two sides to defend the Nightbash title. The SW Barracudas then went on to win the tournament and the individual prizes. Aidan Norris was the bowler of the tournament and Jean-Pierre Mans won both batsman and all-rounder of the tournament. On Saturday the u.10 Gremlins defeated Edgemead by 58 runs. Michael Royden-Turner top scored with 29 and took 2-2-3. The u.10 Goblins played the Hottentots Holland’s u.11s and lost by a big margin. The u.11 Vipers beat Sunningdale by 7 wickets. The u.11 Mamba’s beat Peninsula by 5 runs. The u.12 Falcons lost by 9 wickets against Kenridge Primary. The u.13s first knocked the Herzlia Combined Schools XI out of the WPCA u.13 knock-out competition then drew with Durbanville in a timed match on Saturday. They face Curro this week in the quarter finals. The u.15s defeated Khayelitsha by 94 runs.

Ander tellings: Crusaders 60 - Goodwood derde span 0, Helderberg o. 20A 10 - Kraaie o. 21A 12. Hierdie Saterdag speel al die Helderberg-spanne tuis teen Kuilsrivier in hul tweede ronde vriendskaplike wedstryde. Die program is as volg: 13:00 - Helderberg Crusaders vs Kuilsrivier derde span; 14:15 - Helderberg o. 20A vs Kuilsrivier o. 20A; 15:45 - Helderberg II vs Kuilsrivier A en om 17:00 speel Helderberg I vs Kuilsrivier I. Daar is ook ’n moontlikheid van ’n o. 20B-wedstryd tussen die twee klubs, wat as dit bevestig is, om 13:00 op die B-veld plaas sal vind.

Race time Road runners are reminded that the popular Leapfrog 21 km road race takes place on Saturday 18 April in Gordon’s Bay. Macassar stumps Lulu Boys N

ewly promoted Western Province Super League A side, St. Georges (Lulu Boys) hosted neighbours Macassar (MC Boys) at the Gustrouw Sports Grounds on Saturday 7 March. This was the Lulu Boys’ first warm-up match of their 2015 campaign. They lost 22-20. A last minute penalty conversion from the young, yet experienced Garth de Bruin, resulted in victory for the visitors. St. George’s sensational winger, Michael la

Meyer, scored the first try of the match. Morne Adams missed the conversion. Possession exchanged hands a few times during the first 20 minutes until Macassar’s veteran flank, Owen Adams, scored a well worked try after a few phases. The home-side struck back shortly after the break with a converted try from newly recruited inside centre, Ashwill van Heerden. Scrumhalf Kerwin Felton made a successful conversion. the breakdown, dominating the contact, this however proved to be futile as Julius went over for his side’s third try. De Bruin added the extras, 20-19. It was De Bruin’s boot that pushed the score in the favour of Macassar as he slotted a late penalty to win the match for the visitors. The game was started with a sombre atmosphere as the news of the tragic accident that claimed two players and one spectator from Franschoek RFC.
