Twee motors het aangery gekom en op die taxi met 15 passasiers begin skiet. Cupido is vyf keer geskiet en is na ’n hospitaal gejaag, waar hy gesterf het. Change of scenery: A transformation arrived with the onset of summer at the front of the Cape Sands Building in Beach Road, Strand. The much-debated Nude Man sculpture was gone – to be replaced by the Bronze Leopard, sculpted by 22-year-old Vincent da Silva, who has been making a serious name for himself. Some years ago DistrictMail reported that Strand residents were mortified by the Nude Man; hopefully they’ll find the new sculpture more pleasing to the eye.

THE Strand community are fearing for their lives as violence, allegedly gang-related, erupted on the streets this past weekend. The violence started in the early hours of Sunday morning, when Selwyn Cupido (32), a drug dealer from Broadlands Park in Strand, was gunned down in a taxi outside Legends night club in Gants Centre. According to eyewitnesses, an argument broke out inside the club between Cupido and his friends, a group of “Rastafarians” known as the A-Team, and a gang known as the 28s. This incident is believed to be linked to an attempted murder two weeks ago, when a 19-year-old boy was pulled from a taxi and stabbed in the back six times. It is said that the boy was Cupido’s taxi guard. This past Monday, a man in his thirties, believed to be a member of the 28s, was attacked by about 50 people thought to be affiliated with the A-Team. He was stabbed with various sharp objects and shot several times. Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder respectively. At this stage they cannot confirm a link between the incidents, or whether they were gang-related.

Volgens ’n voor-vonnisverslag van Nicolette van Graan van die departement van maatskaplike dienste, het Appollis na bewering die dag van die moord aan ’n familielid gesê dat hy Felecia dié dag “vrek” gaan maak. Streeklanddros Franceline Mouton het in haar vonnisoplegging in die Strandstreekshof gesê dat die maksimum vonnis van lewenslange gevangenisstraf nie oorweeg kon word nie, omdat getuienis oor dié beweerde dreigement van Appollis nooit in die hof gelewer is nie. Myrtle Jantjies, Felecia se ma en Felecia se negejarige seun Matéo, en inwoners van Temperance Town was by die hof. Mouton het Appollis ’n lafaard genoem wat ’n ongewapende vrou in die rug gesteek het en geen respek vir vroue het nie. Hy is uiteindelik op Menseregtedag (21 Maart) in Melrose Place in Grabouw in hegtenis geneem, nadat die gemeenskap hom aangekeer het en só erg aangerand het dat sy regterarm gebreek is. Appollis het vir die duur van die saak volgehou om onskuldig te pleit . Sy regsverteenwoordiger, Samantha Stanley, het aangedui dat haar kliënt reeds voor sy vonnisoplegging aangedui het dat hy teen die vonnis sal appelleer. Appollis verskyn op 7 Desember weer in die Somerset-Wes-landdroshof. Dié keer op ’n klag van aanranding. Drugs dragged from the village TIK amounting to about R6 000 on the street was confiscated in Sir Lowry’s Pass on Saturday. A 34-year-old man from the village was arrested and charged in connection with the find. The arrest was made amid a series of raids at farms, smallholdings, and shebeens in Sir Lowry’s Pass and Garden Village, carried out by a crack team of soldiers

and the Somerset West police. The operations, which form part of a festive-season crime crackdown, will be conducted on a fortnightly basis. Somerset West Police Station’s commander, colonel Mary-Ann Williams, commended the team on their work, and says their visibility resulted in a drop in crime over the weekend.

THE Umoya Wezizwe Company, in cooperation with businesses and residents of Sir Lowry’s Pass, will present a breakfast meeting with Community Safety MEC Dan Plato and other officials on 16 December. With this meeting, followed by a tour of Sir Lowry’s Pass, Umoya Wezizwe (meaning “Spirit of the Nation”) aims to build bridges between the community and its leaders, and to address crime and other social problems in the area. The organisers wish to “highlight the social and economic ills” plaguing Sir Lowry’s Pass Village; develop plans to uplift the poor; improve safety and security; and “promote integration between the private and public sectors,” says Warren Papas, director of Umoya Wezizwe in Sir Lowry’s Pass. Drug abuse and dealing in

the area will receive special focus – Umoya Wezizwe aims to uplift local youths through regular sports tournaments under the pilot Harmony Sports project, arranged in partnership with the Harmony Social Development Initiative. The breakfast meeting takes place at the Kingdom Builders Church at 08:00. However, the organisers need the assistance of the community to make their dreams a reality. 16 Days of Activism Disabusing the abused IN harmony with the 16 Days of Activism, the Strand police worked to raise awareness about the abuse of women and children when they presented an information session at the Casablanca Community Hall on Tuesday. Lieutenant-colonel Sylvia Johnson explained to those present the dangers of abuse, as well as the legal steps any person who is being abused can take. “Women are vulnerable, and are abused almost every day,” Johnson said. “We have also seen an increase in financial and emotional abuse of women.” She also encouraged men who are being abused to report their cases to the police, going on to say that it is a myth that only women are abused. Speaking after the event, warrant officer Olebogeng Tawana said children are extremely vulnerable to brutal acts of violence, especially at this time of the year. “We urge

the mothers of our community to stop dumping and neglecting their babies,” Tawana said. Asked for his thoughts on the matter, Jannie Frieslaar, chairperson of the Strand Community Policing Forum, said the police are making good progress in getting the community involved.

The road steals another life

Heed the seaside saviours Dahms says the club’s rubber duck was deployed, and the swimmers were brought safely to shore thanks to the efforts of pilot Jacques Steenstra and crew member Hentis Burger. The third person to be rescued that day was a swimmer who had overestimated his abilities and got into difficulty 400 m offshore. The same lifeguards shot back out on the rubber duck and pulled him to safety. Speaking with pride of his team, Dahms says, “Our club is built on the efforts of committed volunteers

who are trained to save lives, and the public’s support is vital.” He thanks Dis-Chem for its ongoing support in sponsoring medical supplies, and Honda Marine for providing and maintaining the rubber duck’s engine. THE lifeguards of the Strand Surf Lifesaving Club have already saved eight lives on Strand Main Beach over the past two months and, with the holiday season approaching, they’ve warned swimmers to be extra cautious in the sea. Heinrich Dahms, chairperson of the club, says the most recent incidents took place on Saturday 19 November, when lifeguards rescued three people. The first incident involved two swimmers, who were caught in a rip current and pulled out to sea.

WELL-LOVED Somerset West resident and businessman Aidan Greeff (38) died in a tragic accident on Saturday near Calitzdorp. According to reports, Greeff lost his life in a motorcycle accident, but the circumstances surrounding the crash could not be established at the time of going to print. It is understood that he died as he was being transported to hospital by paramedics. Greeff, a businessman and the brother-in-law of worldrenowned golfer Trevor Immelman, leaves behind wife Michelle and two young children. He would have celebrated his 39th birthday on 2 December. Messages of condolences have been pouring onto Greeff’s Facebook profile since word about

Parent slams school’s new look NIKITA SYLVESTER A PARENT is beside himself over a decision to introduce a new uniform for the Grade 7 pupils of Lochnerhof Primary School. Now, Hannes Gates says he is thinking of suing the school as he feels his concerns have fallen on deaf ears. Earlier this month the school sent letters to the Grade 6 parents to inform them that the casual school uniform for Grade 7 pupils in 2012 would be replaced by a new, more formal uniform. Gates says that, because his two children only joined the school in May this year, he bought two sets of new uniforms – and now he’ll have to buy another set. “My daughter wore her current school uniform for about half a year; now I am told she needs an entirely new uniform, which she will wear for less than a year. This is totally ridiculous. “When the letter was sent out on 14 November, the Grade 6 pupils were told that, should they not return the signed letter from their parents, their spogkaarte – which they get for good behaviour – would be taken away. When we told our Grade 6 daughter that we would not sign this letter and send it back the next day she cried and cried.”

Gates says Lochnerhof headmaster Marius Botha told him the school’s governing body had decided that, as of next year, the Grade 7 school uniform would change to differentiate Grade 7 pupils from the rest of the school. “Not only is it more cost effective, but the formal uniform also promotes school pride and discipline,” a school press release declares. But, Gates feels, if pupils are not proud of their school by the time they get to Grade 7, a new school uniform will not change anything. He says this decision could not have been made at a worse time of year – just more than a month before Christmas. He adds that he asked Botha to arrange a meeting with all the other Grade 7 parents on the grounds that the decision ought not to be made without the consent of those whose wallets will bear the strain. “Botha responded that it is a very difficult time of the year, with the children in exams and the end of year on our doorstep. This is my exact point – how can one not discuss this with the people it will affect? They have no consideration for the parents.” The school’s press release states that reaction to the decision was mainly positive.

“The old school uniform can be sold back to the school’s clothing shop, and financial support is available for those parents experiencing financial difficulty,” the release states.

Legal action? GATES says a meeting between him and the school’s governing body was scheduled to take place on Monday this week, but the governing body’s chairperson postponed the meeting to Tuesday afternoon so that more information could be gathered. But, Gates says, he was informed on Tuesday morning that the previous day’s meeting had gone ahead. He says he was notified by email that the decision to change the school uniform stood. The school’s governing body apparently agreed to reschedule the meeting with Gates for yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, after DistrictMail’s time of going to press. Polisiewoordvoerders bly egter versigtig om dié moontlikhede te erken en hou voet by stuk dat hulle ál die aanvalle as afsonderlike voorvalle ondersoek. Hoewel polisiëring in die Strand opgeskerp is, is dit noodsaaklik dat die ondersoek(e) na ál hierdie aanvalle die hoogste prioriteit geniet. Die werklikheid van bendes wat ongestoord voortgaan met hul bedrywighede kan slegs beveg word indien die polisie én die gemeenskap sáám hul stem dik maak. Druk moet op die owerhede uitgeoefen word om kragte saam te snoer en ’n moontlike verband tussen die voorvalle te ondersoek. Die onus rus egter ook op die gemeenskap om die polisie van inligting te voorsien wat hul tot die waarheid en optrede kan lei. Slegs dán sal die net nouer gespan kan word om hierdie bendes wat ons gemeenskap teister.

ON Tuesday, my son was mugged and relieved of his cellphone whilst walking to school up Bulties Way. Fortunately, some amazing people were there to help (you know who you are), which led to one of the perpetrators being apprehended by the police. As if by magic, all local crime watch organisations, as well as the police, were at the scene within minutes. After his exam, we went down

to Somerset West Police Station to give a statement. I cannot begin to describe what amazingly capable and professional service and support we received whilst there. Many of us would not be able to tolerate what these people have to witness and deal with on a daily basis. Against the odds, they go about their business with efficiency, etiquette and patience. As an added bonus, thanks to the competence of our boys and

girls in blue, my son’s phone was returned to him, and we await a court date. Special thanks to constable Le Roux, detective Lategan and sergeant Karolus. We should all be very grateful and proud of our local police service.

Ek hou veral daarvan om op die trapmeul in die agterste ry te oefen, want dan kan ek die swetende lywe voor my dophou en sien of daar dalk iemand is wat net so stadig soos ek is. Ek is ’n bietjie ouer as jy, maar probeer nog redelik fiks bly. Voorwaar, onlangs sien ek ’n bles omie op die trapmeul in die voorste ry wat stadiger as ek loop.

Ek was nogal nuuskierig om te sien hoe hy van voor lyk. Nou toe nou! Toe hy uitloop merk ek dis sowaar Koos Kombuis sonder die kenmerkende bandanna! Ek het so pas jou boek Die Tyd van die Kombi’s gelees, en daaruit lyk dit vir my of jou leefstyl uit daardie tydperk maar swaar op die lyf was. Die oefening doen wondere vir jou lyf en jou gemoedstoestand, soos jy alreeds uitgevind het. Ek wil graag noem dat ek ook mooi welgeklede dames in die restaurant opmerk wanneer ek my rooibostee gaan drink voordat ek huis toe gaan. Volgens my waarnemings in die aantrekkamer,

blyk dit dat die meeste dames stort, hare was en versorg, hulself grimeer en netjies aantrek voordat hulle die aantrekkamers verlaat om met hulle sosiale lewe voort te gaan. Baie van ons het tydens die aanvanklike bemarkingsveldtog vir ’n baie billike aanbod aangesluit, en word soos jy ook maar gesubsidieer om gesond te bly, en ai, die gimnasium is darem baie gerieflik naby alles, nie waar nie? Dit is dus die ideale plek om vriende wat ook daar oefen in die restaurant te ontmoet. Geniet dit, Koos!

On 2 November I was walking to Standard Bank from the Woolworth’s entrance and I had a very bad fall on two steps I hadn’t noticed. Security guards were there immediately. A police lady took me across to the bank and insisted I be attended to. When we came away a medic’s car was waiting; my wounds were dressed and I was driven back to my car. My thanks to all of them: they were so kind and compassionate to an elderly pensioner.

Now that’s service IT is rare to get such exceptional service from anyone, let alone a panelbeater. On Friday, on the recommendation of a friend, I phoned De Jongh’s Panelbeating Centre – Dirk de Jongh. I explained the problem we were having with our car door. He immediately asked me to bring the car down at 09:00 on Monday, which I did. He immediately checked the

problem and instructed a staff member to take the car and attend to the problem. My wife and I were offered coffee and asked to wait 15 to 20 minutes. Twenty minutes later, Mr De Jongh personally brought the car to us and, on enquiry about the payment, informed us that it was a small job and there was no charge. Isn’t that great service! A letter to parents – especially dads HOW far will a father go to protect his daughter? When do you say it’s enough and that she is grown up now? Can I relax when she is 16, 18, 21 or 25? Not so long ago, on 28 June 1994, I held an infant in my arms at Butterworth Hospital. As a first-time father this was an awesome feeling. I nurtured her; this motherly job fell to me because her mother was sick. She was soon a toddler, then a bubbly baby with ribbons on her head, a child, then a young lady. She started school and I remember holding the school fence on her first day. I hang around at the gate, just to see that everything goes well. “Let go, she is doing fine,” said her elementary teacher. Soon she made friends and she was enjoying school. I helped her with school work, prepared food for her, bathed her, tucked her in bed, read stories to her. She told me stories about her friends. She was soon elevated to higher classes and got good grades. She started to discard her toys and dolls and demanded computer games, then a cellphone, iPod and laptop. Before I knew it she was on social networks, Twitter, MXit, Facebook. My little daughter was no more, and a young lady with an inquisitive mind had taken over. It was sad to part ways with my little angel. I was engulfed by mixed emotions (that of excitement and apprehension). Part of me was sad that we won’t play little games any more, but another part was happy that I had seen her grow. Today that little girl is 17 years old, healthy and full of life. I still feel the need to protect her. I still screen her friends, approve some, disapprove others.

The only problem is that she reckons she doesn’t need me to protect her any longer. She thinks she knows all there is to know about life. She thinks I’m over-protective and never forgets to remind me that “this is the 21st century” or an age of new generation. She says my teachings are not relevant to the children’s rights or bill of rights. We are now on a collision course at crossroads. I’m a bit of a traditionalist who doesn’t believe in giving children too many rights while they are still under my care. It is my right to discipline my child if she goes astray, but now she says it’s abuse according to children’s rights, and I’ll be arrested for that. Don’t get me wrong, I am against child abuse in all its manifestations, be it physical, sexual or spiritual. We already have a lot of such young people in our streets. If we cannot punish our children for misdeeds, who will do it for us? When do you stop protecting your young daughter against the vultures who are hovering around to prey on her? All in the name of love? In which language do I tell her about wolves in sheepskin? It’s again that time of the year when all good men and women are leading a campaign against child and women abuse. To my daughter Zizipho and all other young ladies who feel aggrieved by their parents’ guidance and over-protectiveness, I say just a little longer guys, just a little longer. Let us enjoy parenthood while it lasts. Hang in there and it will pay off in the long run.

Hond se Gedagtes was die begin van ’n veldtog, wat deur Warnich en sy familie geïnisieer is om die lot van kinders wat aan PraderWilli-sindroom (PWS) lei, te verbeter. Sy nefie, Ruan Burger (15), is ’n PWS-lyer. PWS is ’n genetiese afwyking. Die PWSvereniging in SA sê lyers kan aan bepaalde eienskappe uitgeken word soos hipotonie (lae spiertonus), voedingsprobleme en onderontwikkeling van die geslagsdele in die neonatale tydperk en obesiteit, kort liggaamsbou, verstandelike gestremdheid en gedragsprobleme in die latere lewensjare. Ruan se ma, Liezl Vlok van Oudtshoorn, sê sy hoef vir geen ouer van ’n kind met PWS al die vreugdes, uitdagings, hoogtepunte en laagtepunte van hulle daaglikse bestaan te verduidelik nie. “Vir my is die grootse leemte in die ondersteuning en kennis tot ons beskikking, die gebrek aan ’n huis wat ingerig is om net kinders met PWS op ’n sinvolle en stimulerende manier te akkommodeer.” Om dié rede het die Warnich-familie, ou-

pa Henri en ouma Marieke, hul seuns, Hennie en Botha, en dogter, Liezl, beplan om ’n huis vir mense met PWS op te rig. Dié huis sal net PWS-lyers huisves en sal selfonderhoudend funksioneer. PWS-vereniging se nasionale voorsitter, Rika du Plooy, sê baie ouers van PWSlyers is bekommerd oor wat met hul kinders gaan gebeur as hulle nie meer daar is nie. Rika se dogter is ook ’n lyer. Die Henri Warnich Stigting is onlangs gestig. Dis vernoem na Hennie Warnich en sy vrou, Yolanda, se seuntjie – een van ’n tweeling – wat kort ná sy geboorte in 2004 oorlede is. Vlok sê die grootste uitdaging is om fondse te genereer. Hennie het die voortou geneem en die fondse van sy eenman-komedie in die stigting se fondsrekening betaal.

Prader-Willi-sindroom (PWS) PWS is nie ’n siekte nie en kan nie genees word nie. Volgens die PWS-vereniging van SuidAfrika werk navorsers wêreldwyd om die uiters komplekse aard van hierdie afwyking te begryp. Die Suid-Afrikaanse vereniging is ’n ondersteuningsgroep wat in Maart 1990 deur ’n klein groepie besorgde ouers gestig is. Sedertdien het die Vereniging se ledetal toegeneem en is hulle deel van ’n wêreldwye inligtingsnetwerk oor PWS. Dit is moeilik om presies te bepaal hoeveel mense in Suid-Afrika aan die sindroom ly. Daar word gesê dat een uit tussen 12 000 en 22 000 mense dit kry. Hierdie sindroom kom ewe veel by mans en vroue voor en word by individue van alle rasse aangetref.

Sebastian Scheidereiter is confident about his results. “You can never put in enough hours, but the exams were fine,” he says. “I could answer almost all the questions without struggling.”Sebastian is hoping to get an A aggregate so he can be accepted at the University of Cape Town to study medicine.

Luca Baumann says his teachers made sure he and his fellow pupils knew their subjects backwards. “Everything went fine,” he says. “I was well prepared.” He does admit to a little nervousness about his results, but he says it still feels awesome to be finished with school. Evert Jansen van Vuuren says: “It feels great to be done with school after 12 years. I am amped to be studying engineering at Stellenbosch University next year.” Evert feels that, except for a tricky maths paper, the exams went very well.

Rick Kleinhans feels his exams went well. “The maths was of a high standard but I coped fine. Chemistry was relatively easy, and I was quite surprised.” Rick is sure he will be pleased with his results. He is also looking forward to next year, when he will start studying computer science.

Ryan Page is positive that he did very well. “I gave it my all and couldn’t have prepared more,” he says with confidence. “I will be happy with whatever marks I get.” Ryan will be studying engineering at Stellenbosch University next year. He says it feels rather strange to wake up every morning and know he’s finished with school.

Since 8 September the project has given an extraordinary number of shoes to charity organisations, schools and sports clubs. On Tuesday we visited the Zandvliet Care Facility in Macassar to donate shoes for frail, disabled and aged people. “We are thankful for this donation, as the people here do not always have essentials such as shoes and clothing,” said Allan Smith, the CEO of the centre. A Christmas appeal THE Helderberg Street People’s Centre will host Christmas lunches for the poor and homeless in the weeks ahead. The first lunch will feed about 350 people on Thursday 15 December at the daycare centre at the Sir Lowry’s Pass railway station. This will be followed by Christmas lunch for the destitute people of Somerset West on Sunday 18 December at the centre in Victoria Street; 250 people are expected. In addition, the centre will deliver food parcels to about 100 households where people are too sick to attend the lunches. To be able to give everybody the festive treat they deserve, centre volunteers implore people to help them

with donations of roasted chickens or money in lieu. “Whilst we appreciate that the present economic climate has been difficult for many in our community, for those on the margins it has been even worse,” says centre chairperson Ian Greer. All deliveries can be made to the soup kitchen in Victoria Street, opposite Somerset West Library. “To all those who have supported us during the course of the year – be it financially, through donations, or through prayer and by being there when we most needed your help – bless you,” Greer says. Trailblazing THE opening of the extended Lourens River Trail sets off from the river bank at the upper end of the Lourens River Estate, just below Bizweni Campus, at 09:00 on Saturday 10 December. The Lourens River Conservation Society invites all hikers to join. Gifts will not be handed out on the day, but participants will be given information pamphlets.

You can choose to walk either as far as Island-Reitz Park, or as far as Strand Beach – about two-and-ahalf hours away – in which case you will be given a commemorative certificate of completion. ’n Flair-afsluiting DIE Helderberg-blommeklub het onlangs hul jaareindfunksie met ’n gala-ete by die Farmhouse Restaurant in Somerset-Wes gehou. Die tema van die funksie was “Denim met ’n flair” en almal was uitgevat vir die geleentheid. Die klub is op 21 Oktober 1974 gestig en is die oudste blommeklub in die Helderberg. Vir die eerste keer in die klub se geskiedenis is ’n Goue Lelie-toekenning vir hulp en bystand oorhandig. Susan Marks, Chantel Henn, Ingrid Henn en Esmé Pietersen is met dié toekenning beloon. Leana Vermeulen het die prys gewen vir beste leerling van die werkswinkel. Die trofeë-wenners vir werk deur die jaar gelewer is: Engela Kruger – beste gevorder,

Retha Lategan – beste intermediêr en Susan Pietersen – beste beginner. Tommy Dell, erelid van die klub, het ook vir die klubvoorsitter Jannie du Toit, met ’n spesiale toekenning vereer. Die Helderberg-blommeklub spog ook met ’n sanggroep Die Single Girls. Die drietal het die gaste laat skater van die lag met hul vertoning. Jazz jam heats up the Helderberg

Join the acoustic alliance EIGHTEEN top SA musicians are set to play at the Cape Town Folk ’n Acoustic Music Festival next month – and you stand a chance to play among them. A mix of acoustic guitarists such as Steve Newman and Guy Buttery, along with singer-songwriter stalwarts such as Farryl Purkiss and Rory Eliot, will come together for the retro folk concert at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Saturday 10 December. The artists will perform solo and duo sets, completely unplugged and stripped down to the essentials – guitar and voice. Add to all this some blues from

Natasha Meister and Machineri, as well as a little folk–pop by Janie Bay, and you’ve got a fine evening of musical storytelling. Tickets cost R180 through www.webtickets.co.za, or R200 at the door. TAKE your picnic basket, friends and family and enjoy the late afternoon summer sun with the Delft Big Band when they swing into action at the Helderberg Nature Reserve’s Summer Sunset Concert. The band will show off what their instruments can do on Sunday 11 December at 17:30. Featuring members as young as 13, the band was formed in August 2008 as a developmental initiative to help vulnerable youths from high schools in Leiden, Rosendal and Voorbrug outside Cape Town. Under the directorship of renowned jazz trumpeter Ian Smith, the Delft Big Band has been stealing the show at major jazz events both locally and internationally. The band performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in April 2010 and the Youth Jazz Festival at Artscape this year. And, in March, six members of the band performed to rapturous applause in Sweden at the 11th World’s Children’s Prize, awarded annually to those who have made a difference to children’s rights. Artistic spark: Each year the Owl House, where people are encouraged to take a journey into their creative hearts through art, puts on an exhibition that shows off its participants’ achievements and celebrates the process they worked through. This year’s Pink Dot Affair takes place tomorrow (Friday) at the Bizweni Campus in Bizweni Avenue at 18:30. The event will include an art exhibition, wine tasting, jazz played by The Brotherhood, and food tables for the hungry. The Owl House, established in 2009, strives to provide a place for people of all ages and stages in life to be creative. NEW contemporary residential development is taking shape in the heart of Stellenbosch. THE Cape Chamber of Commerce welcomes union attempts to speed up job creation, but warns that without real economic growth the new jobs will not be sustainable. “We can create a lot more jobs if we use labour intensive methods in commerce and industry, but the result will be higher costs and that will not make us more competitive,” said Mr Michael Bagraim, president of the Chamber. “Unions are not employers and they can only exist when business has created the jobs for their members. If we want more jobs, business has to grow.” To achieve this, the government should talk to business and design policies to encourage growth. This was sometimes a lot easier and a lot cheaper than many economists believed. “The first thing we have to do is remove

some of the restrictions that are inhibiting growth. Sometimes it is as simple as getting out of the way and allowing private enterprise to get on with what it does best.” Municipalities should ease the way for architects and builders who created jobs and government should relax labour legislation to encourage business to employ more people. “Sometime all government has to do is stand back and collect the taxes. Instead government insists on becoming involved and trying to exert more control, often in areas where it lacks expertise.” An example was the mining industry where extensive changes in legislation had created policy uncertainties and this had made companies reluctant to invest in new projects. Another example was the desperate

need for independent power producers to cope with the growing demand for electricity. “All the government has to do is get out of the way and allow the big municipalities, the main distributors of electrity, to buy directly from the IPP’s.” The oil industry was subject to excessive government control and this had forced up petrol and diesel prices. Pick ’n Pay had been barred from selling petrol at discount prices and the lack of competition had caused stagnation in the industry. “Now we have shortages of LPG and bitumen and the ageing refineries are breaking down,” Bagraim said. He is of the opinion that without government interference, “market forces will see that we have enough petrol, gas and tar for the roads”.

SECTIONAL TITLE INSURANCE FORUM IN the Sectional Title Industry I find that most liability claims are handled incorrectly, resulting in unpleasantness when insurers decline these claims. Prescribed Rule 29 (2) of the Sectional Title Act states that: “…trustees shall take steps to (a) insure the owners and trustees …against liability….occurring in connection with the common property…”. It is therefore clear that liability occurring from inside an owner’s unit is not the Body Corporate’s responsibility. The insurance policy is also clear on this point. Let’s consider the following scenarios: ) A member of the public is injured, or his / her property is damaged, whilst visiting an owner. If the visitor feels that the injury/damage was caused by the negligence of the Body Corporate and, provided the injury / damage occurred on the common grounds, passages, stairs, lifts, etc., the visitor has the right to claim against the Body Corporate as the insured. If the injury / damage was caused inside the owner’s unit the claim will invariably be against the owner. ) A tenant of an owner is injured, or his / her property is damaged, and he / she feels that such injury/damage was caused by the negligence of the Body Corporate and, provided the injury / damage occurred on the common grounds as described above, the lease agreement be-

tween the owner and the tenant will have to be considered before any action can be taken. To clarify: Most lease agreements contain clauses whereby an owner cannot be held liable by his / her tenant on any grounds. By definition an owner is the insured and therefore, the Body Corporate. The tenant therefore, cannot claim against the Body Corporate. ) Then there is the matter of disclaimers. Insurers are adamant when dealing with liability claims where the Body Corporate has neglected to display it. The procedures to follow when a liability claim is lodged against a Body Corporate, are to be noted: (a) The Body Corporate may acknowledge receipt of the claimant’s claim but cannot accept liability, the insurer is the only entity who may do so. (b) The claimant must submit his/her claim to the Body Corporate in writing, stating the reason why the claimant is holding the Body Corporate liable. (c) The trustees are to complete the relevant claim form as well as a statement, stating their views on the matter. (d) All further dealings with the claimant will then be handled by the insurer. (e) It must be suggested to the claimant that, should the claimant be insured for the particular event, the claim be submitted to the claimant’s insurers as well. Colourful performance showcases a variety of cultures: The International School of the Helderberg held their bi-annual International Day on 29 October. All classes, from Early Childhood 1 to Year 11, participated in the fabulous show which included an Aboriginal dance, a traditional Indian fairy tale and a wonderful representation of the colourful mix of cultures in South Africa. The highlight of the day was the art auction where works from across the school were auctioned off. The iconic image taken by Greg English of former state president Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela on his release on 11 February 1990 and an oil painting by talented Cape Town-based artist, Gavin Collins were some of the items auctioned. PROFILE

The enduring magic of Marna PIETER BOONZAIER A RARE combination of diligence, tenacity, beauty and leadership has landed one of Somerset West’s past pupils with one of the most outstanding achievements that can be attained by any student. Marna Rörich matriculated in 2008 from Somerset College, and enrolled to study foundationphase education at the CPUT in Wellington in 2009. Her leadership potential showed already when she was elected as class representative. She was also a finalist in the demanding Miss CPUT contest. But it was in this year that her tenacity and fighting spirit truly emerged – when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She passed her first-year subjects comfortably, reeling in a few distinctions. She knew 2010 would be a tough year, with eight sessions of chemotherapy ahead. Then came daily radiation treatment for three weeks – during which she opted to stay on campus and attend classes, and even conducted the choir for a competition despite having lost her voice. She was re-elected as class representative. And, although she had

lost all her beautiful long hair, she donned a wig and faced her classes – and the stage for the Miss CPUT contest – with confidence. She was chosen by popular vote as Miss Campus. And, says Marna: “I needed to focus on my studies during my second year, and with the wonderful support of a super-mom, that is exactly what I did.” Riana Rörich, Marna’s mom, is an adept and popular Grade 1 teacher with many years of experience at prestigious schools in Stellenbosch and elsewhere. “Being a widow, and donning the dad-hat every now and then, was not easy, but I am so proud of Marna’s achievements,” she says. “I believed she could do it, and she proved to all and sundry that she has what it takes to be a leader despite life’s adversities. ” Marna missed only one class during her chemotherapy, and impressed everyone at the oncology department with her sparkling personality and positive outlook. She wrote a blog to record her journey and encourage others in similar circumstances. Her entries can be read at www.copingwithcancer19.blogspot.com.

In her third year, Marna was elected as a member of the CPUT Students’ Representative Council (SRC) on the Residences, Transport and Welfare portfolio. By now she had truly made name for herself, and her popularity was enunciated with her unopposed election as campus SRC chairperson for 2012 – the only female chairperson among the CPUT’s satellite campuses. Marna turned 21 on 8 November, and her future looks rosy. As she sums up on her blog, “I hope to make a big difference in the world somehow after going through this ordeal. I now know I can pretty much get through anything.” She’s set on generating awareness around Hodgkin’s lymphoma – and she’s “looking forward to the rest of this year, which I can now finish as a healthy happy teenager.” Marna, passionate about teaching, chose to spend her practical

teaching time at Somerset West schools such as Beaumont and De Hoop Primaries, Hendrik Louw Primary in the Strand, and her alma mater, Somerset College. She distinguished herself at all of these schools as an outstanding teacher.

Cash can still be King

THIS week I heard a saying, which I have not heard in a while and that is that “Cash is King”. Truth be told, cash can never be King, unless maybe the King of Swaziland considering how broke they are. Cash is currently behaving more like the Court Jester offering negative real returns after inflation. However, cash can still rule the Kingdom. The title of King often given to cash refers to the benefit of liquidity and not the long-term returns on offer from cash. Having access to cash when the opportunity presents itself is the real benefit of cash and why cash can still rule as King. The return on cash is the interest earned plus the potential return from buying an asset at a

cheaper price in the future. If you believe the stock market is likely to fall by 15% over the next 12 months then your return from cash would be the 5,5% interest earned plus the 15% fall in prices totalling a return of 20,5% for the year. I often hear an investor lament “if only I had the money,” and this is the real benefit of holding cash. Very often when the opportunity presents itself investors stand back to “let the dust settle”, thus missing the opportunity. Sometimes it pays to “keep your powder dry” and your finger on the “trigger”, but getting this timing right is notoriously difficult and takes plenty of courage. Especially when there is “blood on the street”.

Ben’s on the Beach – one of the best NIKITA SYLVESTER STRAND restaurant Ben’s on the Beach is holding the Helderberg high: you can rest assured there that, with its national Best Steakhouse award, you’ll be eating one of the best steaks around. Ben’s on the Beach proved it has the sizzle when the Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant Awards set out to find those restaurants offering the tastiest, juiciest and most tantalising steaks. Ben Oosthuizen’s restaurant and 24 others across the country were selected as the best steak and grill houses in South Africa. The competition is not one restaurants can enter – judging happens nationwide, and it’s completely unannounced and anonymous. “I had no idea about the competition and that my restaurant had been chosen,” Oosthuizen says. “I heard about it from a friend and went to check it out on the website.” Although, he says, his business has been going strong for eight years, this award is a great accomplishment for the team. “This award means a lot to me as I am nearing the end of my career.” Oosthuizen explains that he has worked in steak houses for most of his life. To him this is not just a job:

The 56-year-old Oosthuizen, originally from London but currently living in Somerset West, has been in the steak business since 1974. In 1985 Oosthuizen opened his own steak house in Stellenbosch, called Bobby Mc Gees. There he won the very first JAYCEE Best Steakhouse in the Cape award. And at Ben’s on the Beach, Oostehuizen says, staff always strive to give their clients the best service and food. “We are blessed with a fantastic team who ensure that our meat is

of top quality. “Ben’s has its own mini butchery and dedicated refrigeration system where we process, age and cure our meats. We are one of the few grill houses that continue to dry-age beef on the bone. Although this is more expensive and labour intensive, it is the time-honoured and superior way to handle meat. “The ageing and processing of our meat is my personal responsibility, which I attend to on a daily basis – six days a week.” Oosthuizen explains that Ben’s on the Beach is not just a place to pop out for a quick bite: it’s a restaurant where you can spend hours en-

He says that, in these tough times, running a restaurant can be challenging. “Eating out has become expensive, but we’re very blessed because we’re still growing and happy with the way things are going.” Indeed, the restaurant is no

In 2009 Ben’s was awarded Best New Entry by the Diners Club, which also handed it a platinum award for its wine. “Running a restaurant is about passion,” Oosthuizen says. “You think it’s easy but it’s not – you need to care about what you do and believe in the pursuit of excellence.”

Harrison was up against two other finalists, and though he says they were “very strong” competitors, his novel SMS-based motivational service won out in the end. “Unbelievable!” he says. “Considering that MOBIvation.com started out as just an idea I was sending out to my friends to support them moving forward, to be recognised in the mainstream business world like this is more than I ever dreamed possible.” He says that, if there is one thing receiving this award has shown him, “no idea is too crazy to be successful”.

CONSCIENTIOUS business people got bang for their bucks when their hard work earned recognition at the seventh annual Business Awards, held by the Helderberg Chamber of Commerce at the Lourensford Estate last Friday. The Chairman’s Discretionary Award went to Lourensford owner and prominent businessman, Dr Christo Wiese, in acknowledgement of the impact of the contribution he’s made to the local industry and its community, and his work through Lourensford’s activities. The other award categories recognised meaningful and significant contributions

made by business, associations and societies within the Helderberg basin. Helderberg Watch takes stock BEATRICE WILTSHIRE

PROACTIVE policing is a far more effective way of dealing with crime than simply reacting as incidents occur, and this point was stressed by Peter Brand, chairperson of the Helderberg Crime Watch (HCW), at its annual general meeting. “We believe that keeping the streets safer is a very important layer of security, just as important as the security within the home or business,” Brand said, speaking at the Lord Charles earlier this month. In keeping with this, the dedicated HCW–Vetus Schola patrol vehicles have been patrolling the streets by focusing on crime hot spots rather than just driving around aimlessly. Watch members say this approach, working closely with the police, law enforcement and other neighbourhood watches, has been bringing down crime in the Helderberg’s residential areas since the end of 2010, at which time crime throughout the country was rising to unprecedented levels.

Operations manager Hugh Roe cautioned residents, however, to adapt their lifestyles and teach their children how to avoid situations in which they are vulnerable. People should get to know their neighbours and get involved in community initiatives, he added.

STAR filly Princess Victoria will be all the rage for the R750 000 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas (Grade 1) when the field of 11 lines up at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday 3 December. Beaten only once in her career, Glen Kotzen’s runner is likely to start deep in the red for one of the plums on the national calendar. Just how she shapes here will determine her path for the rest of the Western Cape’s Sizzling Summer Season. Kotzen said last week that Princess Victoria’s long term target was the Vodacom Durban July, but he was also considering running her against the colts in the Cape Premier Yearling Sales Guineas and possibly the Investec Cape Derby, but no firm plans were in place. The Victory Moon filly won her last three races from 1 200 m to 1 400 m against fillies, including two Grade 1s and a Grade 2, in effortless fashion. However, Kotzen has admitted

that the three-year-old colts and geldings are a very strong crop this year and she wouldn’t have it as easy against them. Also in the Avontuur lineup is Trinity House, the only horse to have finished in front of Princess Victoria. However, the tables have been turned since and Joey Ramsden’s runner had to play second fiddle in the recent Choice Carriers Championship. Thunder Dance finished third behind Princess Victoria and Trinity House that same race, but Brett Crawford’s runner is coming on the right way and should enjoy the extra come next Saturday. KZN-based trainer Dennis Drier is holding his own in the Western Cape and will saddle strapping import Miss Ipanema, fourth in the Choice Carriers Championship. The Aussie-bred is another who will enjoy the trip and should come on for that run. The Dean Kannemeyer-trained Bermuda Sloop has come into her own, winning her last two races in open company.

En as begeerlikheid die maatstaf is, kom hulle ook tweede. Niks op aarde is volmaak nie. Tog is daar hoegenaamd niks wat ek aan die MercedesBenz SLK200 sou wou verander nie. Hy lyk lieflik. Hy hanteer voortreflik. Hy is onweerstaanbaar. Vir my was die sintese tussen ’n roadster se bakontwerp, binneruim, hantering en verrigting nog selde só uitmuntend. Ek wens tog dié SLK was myne. Had ek R555 700, dan was hy. ) Die toetsmotor is goedgunstiglik beskikbaar gemaak deur Eugène Botha van Rola Motors Mercedes-Benz.

DAAR is iets hemels omtrent die sterre. Dié aan die uitspansel weerkaats die wonder van die skepping; dié in wielewêreld vergestalt die vernuf van die mens. En, as daar natuurlik één ondermaanse skepping is wat sy ster verdien, dan is dit Mercedes-Benz. Die nuwe SLK200 bewys dit opnuut. Sedert sy geboorte in 1996 het die SLK vir hom ’n spesiale plekkie oopgewikkel in die harte van derduisende gesofistikeerde, pretlustige motorryers. Dit ten spyt, was motorskrywers heelwat minder ontvanklik en aansienlik meer harteloos: Die SLK – het hulle knaend gekla – is ’n oninspirerende oopdakkarretjie, net geskik vir vertonerige huisvroue en haarstiliste. Nie regtig ’n ware roadster nie, en beslis nie ’n waardige mededinger vir Porsche se Boxster en BMW se Z3 en Z4 met hul seildakkies nie. Die eerste SLK’s was beslis nie die helderste ster in Mercedes-Benz se uitspansel nie, maar het nietemin verkoop soos soetkoek. Die tweede het aansienlik blinker geskyn, en het ontwerppryse begin verower. Die derde – dis die reeks wat pas by ons sy verskyning gemaak het – is ’n ster van ’n gans ander glans. Dit is ’n begeerlike motor, allermins net vir huisvroue en haarstiliste. SLK staan vir sportief, lig en kort – sportlich, leicht und kurz. In sy nuwe gedaante kan dit ook staan vir sexy, lieflik en kordaat. Drie maal is skeepsreg. Die derde reïnkernasie van SLK is, in ’n woord, hemels. En, hy sit jou in die derde hemel. Hoe MercedesBenz ooit hierop gaan verbeter, weet die hemel alleen. Miskien kan hy nog groener word, maar hopelik probeer die Merc-ontwerpers nooit hierdie wiel herontwerp nie. So min soos wat ek van die eerste SLK gehou het, so baie hou ek van die nuwe een. Die vraag is nie meer of hy kan kers vashou by Porsche en BMW se roadsters nie; die vraag is nou of hulle kan kers vashou by die Merc. Die antwoord is: Die SLK is die pas-

Sardine shoals promise a great season THE sardine masses that were all around the coast from Hout Bay to inside the bay at Glen Cairn had moved into deeper water on Sunday. Well-known boat angler Earl Fenwick and a number of colleagues were fortunate to see huge shoals of these sardines pushed onto the beach at Kommetjie on Sunday. Earl said the beach was littered with pilchard and birds feeding on the shoal. He said they really had a ball catching the sardines with the help of a throw net and procured a number of nets full of fish which they dragged onto the beach to fill their containers. These fresh sardines may either be blast frozen for bait or beheaded, cleaned, fried or baked. When cooked, the middle bone is removed, leaving two tasty fillets from each fish. Another option is to thoroughly clean and wash the sardine then carefully pack them into terracotta or clay jars with each layer of sardine separated by a layer of coarse salt until the jar is full. A wooden lid is then placed on top of the last layer of salt and a brick placed on top of the lid to pressurise the salted fish which can be kept and eaten after a few weeks. The Gordon’s Bay Boat Angling Club held their Inshore Classic Species competition on 18, 19 and 20 November. On Saturday morning the southeaster was still making its presence felt and most of the
