Vrou se lyk in vlak graf

DELIAH BRINKHUIS

of hoor nie.

Haar houman, Joseph Africa (40), is om 18:30 by ’n huis in Kramat in hegtenis geneem.

Terror on N2 ILLANA FRANTZ

A SET of dentures will forever be a reminder of the brutal attack a 58year-old woman had to endure on the N2 opposite Macassar last week. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, resides in the northern suburbs and was on her way to an appointment on Tuesday 5 June in Somerset West. She remembers passing the Engen garage just after 17:00, when suddenly she saw huge rocks in the road. There was no time to swerve and she ended up hitting a rock. She was driving in the fast lane and pulled over to the centre island, next to the bushes, to inspect the damage. That was when her nightmare experience began. ) Read her story on page 2 and pay heed to her warnings.

Collision claims two: Two naval officers from Bredasdorp Zikizani Rasimeni (30) and Vuyani Yeki (26) died in an accident on Sir Lowry s Pass last Friday. Police say the accident happened at 15:50, after the men lost control of the VW Golf in which they were travelling to Cape Town. The VW swerved into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a BMW. A pile-up resulted when another car and a bakkie collided with the two. According to police, the people in these vehicles suffered minor injuries and were later transported to hospital. Emergency services used the jaws of life to remove the deceased from the wreckage. The road remained closed during the time of the investigation while traffic was backed up on the N2 up to the Gordon s Bay and Sir Lowry s Pass Village turn-off. Photo: Warren Meyer

NEWS SUMMARY ) A WOMAN’s body was discovered in a shallow grave in the back yard of a Macassar residence last week. The Macassar police made the discovery just after 16:00 on Thursday 7 June in Smartie Town after neighbourhood watch member Piet Nomdoe reported her missing. Constable Sibusiso Mdlalose and sergeant Deon Dalziel searched the house first – and came across a blood-stained bed. They moved their search to the back yard, where Mdlalose stepped on a sheet of corrugated iron. He then noticed that the ground there was softer than everywhere else, and he started digging until he saw an elbow emerge from the ground. The woman was identified as Gwendolene Adams (32). – page 1 ) THE pupils and teachers of Dr GJ Joubert Primary School in the Strand are ecstatic about their long-awaited school hall, which they hope to start using in a month and a half. In June 2010 the foundation was laid, and construction started on the first phase of the hall. Now, two years later, this giant project is almost finished. The dream for this school to have its very own hall was born in 1989, and a debutante ball in 1990 was the first of many fundraisers toward it. Principal Desmond Robyn says the dream would never have been realised had it not been for the assistance of TRE Property Development Consultants and the Garden Cities Archway Foundation. – page 6

SOMERSET WEST

Residents in communication limbo ILLANA FRANTZ

A GROUP of Somerset West residents have been unable to use their phones for more than a week – and no one can tell them when the service will resume. One of the residents, Annemarie Carter from Monte Sereno, says her phone line has been dead since last Thursday. She went to the Telkom office in Somerset West shortly thereafter, and they informed her that the telephone blackout had been caused by a damaged cable. The Telkom employees, she says, were unable to tell her when the problem would be fixed. “They said they would have to order a new cable, but because of the rain they

couldn’t say how much they needed to order. I say rather order too much, but at least attempt to fix the problem.” She was also upset because, she says, the telecommunications giant did nothing to inform residents of the problem. “They could have put flyers in people’s postboxes, aired it on the radio or published a notice in the paper, but they did nothing.” John Engelbrecht, who also lives in Monte Sereno, says he phoned Telkom’s call centre last week to report the matter. They informed him that the fault was due to a general outage. Having worked in the telecommunications industry for many years, he says he understands how difficult it is for Telkom

to communicate with their clients at this time. However, he also sympathises with people who work from home and rely on the Internet, as an interruption in this service could result in a loss of income. Pynee Chetty, spokesperson for Telkom, confirms that the breakdown in services is linked to a bulk fault. The cause of the problem is being investigated; the outage could be the result of flooding after heavy rains, or cable theft, he says. Only once the exact cause has been confirmed can repairs be undertaken, Chetty says. Residents can dial 10210, and businesses 10217, to report any line faults. ) Also read the letter on page 8.

Storm drives strong wind THE Helderberg was rocked by heavy rain and strong winds at the end of last week. According to the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management, the homes of about 1 000 people in the informal settlements of Solly’s Town, Pholile Park, Morkel’s Cottage in Strand and Rasta Camp in Sir Lowry’s Pass were flooded. Sand bags were supplied to the residents of Solly’s Town. Flooding also struck Da Gama and Michau Streets in Strand, as well as properties in Voortrekker and Stellenberg Roads and Penny Lane in Somerset West. A falling tree, meanwhile, damaged three enclosures at Monkey Town, and another tree was blown over in Picardi Cresecent, Strand. A showroom window of Droomers Fiat in Main Road Somerset West also cracked under the strain of the wind.

They will begin their evening at the Manuka Restaurant parking lot in Somerset West at 18:00, and will remain out in the cold until 06:00 on Saturday morning. This is the Friday evening closest to winter solstice, which is the longest and, in theory, coldest night. Cheetahs make their move

NIKITA SYLVESTER

THE cheetahs and staff of the Cheetah Outreach Project are settling in nicely at their new home at Paardevlei in Somerset West. The project, which was previously housed at Spier, moved early last week, with the official opening on Thursday 7 June. Despite the cold wet weather, many were present and excited to witness the grand opening of the new cheetah enclosures. “If ever you can dream a dream, tonight this dream has come true for me,” said Annie Beckhelling, founder of Cheetah Outreach. “The move marks a new chapter in the story of Cheetah Outreach, and we’re excited about this next phase of our journey.” Beckhelling explains that the Cheetah Outreach Project is a conservation-, education- and community-based programme established to raise awareness around the plight of the cheetah, and to campaign for the species’ survival. The project started with two cheetahs, and has grown over the years to include jackals, meerkats, servals, caracals, bat-eared

foxes and Anatolian Shepherd guard dogs. Cheetah Outreach offers a variety of fun and educational activities for all, and is open seven days a week, 365 days per year. Visit www.cheetah.co.za, or the Cheetah Outreach Facebook to find out more.

THE education department appears to be making headway with schooling in the Helderberg, with various projects well on their way and future plans in place. DistrictMail recently reported that Somerset West ward councillors and Western Cape Education Department officials were tackling the issue head-on. The following projects are currently underway, or have been completed: ) Additional classes were allocated to Parel Vallei High, De Hoop Primary, Beaumont Primary, Hendrick Louw Primary, Strand High, Lochnerhof Primary. ) The department is investigating the provision of additional land for sports fields for Methodist Primary School. The possibility of using the site of Rusthof School for pupils with disabilities in Somerset West is being investigated, as this school is due to move to Strand. ) A temporary primary school is under construction in Nomzamo. The department is planning to replace it with a permanent school. The name for the new school has already been registered

as Christmas Tinto Primary School. ) The buildings at Rusthof and ACJ Phakade Primary are being upgraded. Ward councillors Stuart Pringle and Benedicta van Minnen have put forward the following proposals, which are now being investigated. In the next one to four years: ) a high school to serve Gordon’s Bay and Strand; ) a high school to serve Sir Lowry’s Pass and Nomzamo; and ) a primary school and high school in Rome Glen to serve Somerset West and Sir Lowry’s Pass. In the next five to seven years: ) a high school in Heldervue to serve Somerset West, Firgrove and Macassar; and ) permanent buildings to replace the temporary buildings at Solomon Qatyana School. The councillors assure they will continue to monitor school developments in the Helderberg, together with Helderberg MP Andricus van der Westhuizen.

HELDERBERG

HH concerns discussed JAMEY THOMAS

WESTERN Cape minister of health, Theuns Botha, paid a visit to Helderberg Hospital on Friday 11 May to discuss, amongst other matters, the long term plans for the hospital. During the meeting with the senior managers of the hospital the main points of discussion were the limited pharmacy space to store medication, additional space to cater for the increasing volume of psychiatric patients, the expansion of the Kangaroo facility within the maternity section and the long term expansion/future plans for the hospital. An outcome of the meeting was the investigation of the possibility of erecting a temporary building on site as a solution to the pharmacy storage problem. As a temporary solution to the limited space in the psychiatric ward it was decided to accommodate longterm patients at Lentegeur Hospital. This will allow for the establishment of a separate ward for psychiatric patients at Helderberg Hospital. With regard to the Kangaroo care facility, architects will be consulted on its possible expansion.

LIFESTYLE 12–44

Present at the meeting were (back, from left) Dr Gio Perez (director of Khayalitsha Eastern Substructures), Adli Arnold, Hendrik van der Walt (Helderberg Hospital secretary), (middle) Ebrahim Adams (chairperson of Helderberg Hospital health & facility board), Dr Elizabeth Erasmus (superintendent at Helderberg Hospital), Theuns Botha (minister of health), Yolande Hunter, Yvonne Floor (vice chairperson of Helderberg Hospital health & facility board) and (front) Katie Ruiters (matron at the Helderberg Hospital). Another matter which was discussed is the delayed responses to ambulance call-outs between 18:00 and 19:00. It appears the primary cause of the problem is probably the change of staff shifts. Schedules will be investigated in order to improve the situation. The potential of private sector funding for a new hospital in the area will also be investigated, and once funding has been secured, an official announcement with all the relevant details will be made.

A grand gift to motherhood THE maternity ward of Helderberg Hospital has just been given a fantastic gift – an ultrasound machine worth more than half a million rand. The ultrasonography machine, valued at R600 000, was donated by the Helderberg Rotary Club and Chison Medical Systems. It’s used for routine checkups during pregnancy to create an image of an unborn child. Lochner Eksteen of Chison Medical Systems says Helderberg Hospital was chosen as the recipient because the machine can only improve the already high-quality care given there.

Before this, the hospital used a machine capable of showing only black-and-white images; the fullcolour screen on the new machine will enable doctors and nurses to make higher-quality scans, which will give them more information to analyse and make diagnoses with, says Eksteen. “It will make a huge difference to the workflow and quality of health care.” Ultrasound equipment is not exclusive to obstetrics – it has a wide range of uses. The technology is often used to make images of soft tissues, and is considered safe because it uses sound and not radiation.

Presenting the ultrasound machine to the Helderberg Hospital are (standing, from the left) Helderberg Rotary Club’s Winfred Löffler, Peter Cohen, Ronnie Vader, president Dick Solms, Vera Löffler; (front) Dr Charl Hobson and Lochners Eksteen of Chison Medical Systems.

Botha informed everyone present that he is aware of the challenges facing the hospital and that the growth of the population in the immediate surroundings have placed unforeseen pressure on the hospital. He stressed that patients are most important with regard to public health care and that their needs come first. “Please treat our patients with dignity, the way you would like to be treated,” said Botha.

Mail EDITORIAL COLUMN

Share your warmth WINTER has arrived in the Helderberg with its full fierce force. With temperatures dropping below zero at night and rain pouring down more often than not, it is crucial to think about the less fortunate with renewed empathy. Those who have to brace the extreme weather without proper shelter, warm clothes or blankets are in desperate need of our help. From barefoot children in rags and the homeless on the street to abandoned animals at the shelters that need to fight continuously without funds just to stay afloat – all are silently pleading for mercy and warm hearts this winter. However, when you do reach out with an open hand, remember to give responsibly. By assisting beggars on street corners you are not doing anyone a favour. Instead, you are encouraging them to continue with a devastating lifestyle. Rather donate clothes, blankets, money or food to the official welfare establishments in our region. Hospice, Patch, Child Welfare, the Night Shelter, Animal Welfare Society and local churches are just some of the worthy organisations that strive to assist those in need in our community. By supporting them you are helping and blessing the less fortunate, while contributing to a better future for all.

Daar was doodse stilte.

krimineel behandel is.

) Jeswin Africa, you should sue the mall management and security company. They should be taught a lesson. ) Strange how the mall security can apprehend a “suspected” car thief, but cannot catch the pervert exposing himself to unsuspecting women! ) I think it’s about time that the Strand police catch a wakeup. The bad publicity should be noted. The charge office is pathetic compared to Somerset West. Janet ) Mr Anti-Snob from Strand, I am sorry that I like a good cappuccino once in a while. Some people like drinking alcohol every weekend and can’t remember how they got home the next morning. I would rather stick with a good cappuccino at Snob’s Coffee! Thank you. Mr P ) Drink your cappuccinos at Kitchen Café at The Smiling Oven, Gants Plaza. Best ever! Al my liefde, Ol

A guiltless cuppa IT has been amusing to read the letters in DistrictMail regarding cappuccinos and where one can enjoy the best in town. I was, therefore, slightly offended to read Alicia’s and AntiSnob’s comments in the “Have your say” column last week. I have a fairly good life, which hasn’t come to us on a plate and for which we have had to work very hard indeed. But my comment on Alicia’s rather spiteful remarks would be that my hus-

band and I do enjoy a good cappuccino, and it is our small way of relaxing at one of our many coffee shops and restaurants in town. I am fully aware of the poverty surrounding us, and we have always been there to assist in the event of a tragedy or disaster in town, where poorer people need blankets, clothing, shoes, food, donations and any other form of help after floods or fires may have ravaged their homes. We also care for our small number of staff in

Telkom trials and tribulations WE would like to express our dismay at the abhorrent lack of service delivery from Telkom. The original fault was reported to Telkom on 18 May. This was followed up on several occasions, and the reply was that several technicians had been on site but could not rectify the problem. On 24 May a technician said he had identified the problem – a main line between two Telkom poles needed to be replaced. He tried to temporarily fix it, which seemed to work, and we had a working phone on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

On Monday morning it was, however, dead again. Contacting Telkom, we were informed to our dismay that the original fault had been cleared, following which we duly logged another fault. After several follow-up calls to Telkom, another technician was on site on 5 June, and we explained to him exactly what the problem was. He then indicated that he would take up the matter with his supervisor, and that it would be repaired by no later than 8 June. Going into the fourth week

the very best way possible. So I feel no guilt whatsoever in going to enjoy a good cappuccino after we have finished our shopping – and, by the way, if we see boxes at the entrances of our supermarkets requesting food and donations for less fortunate people, us cappuccino drinkers (and I know many of them), would be among the very first to contribute and assist wherever possible. How about forming a Cappuccino Club in Somerset West then?

from logging the original fault, we still do not have a working phone. Although we had put in place an interim measure to alleviate the problem, service delivery, something that we pride ourselves in immensely, is still affected. We sincerely apologise to our dear and valued customers for the inconvenience and irritation caused by this problem, but as can be seen, it’s due to no lack of perseverance and trying from our side.

Father s Day at Laborie:

Running out of ideas on what to do for your dad this Father’s Day weekend? Head out to the popular Laborie Lazy Days Market. On Saturday 16 June between 09:00 and 14:00, dads will be treated to a spectacular vintage car exhibition, as well as a selection of international and local beers. Outdoor enthu-

siasts can look forward to a fun-filled hike, suitable for the entire family – and free of charge. The hike will start at 08:30, and hikers will leave from the cork tree outside the market area. FATHER’S Day is an annual occasion dedicated to honouring and appreciating all dads. DistrictMail asked a few toddlers – from Heidi and Tinktinkie Crèches – how they intend celebrating Father’s Day on Sunday.

Caitlyn Coetzee (4) from Tinktinkie Crèche: “I bought daddy some chocolate which I’m going to hide under his pillow! It’s going to be fun, he’ll never find it, there.”

Emma Kain (4) from Heidi Crèche: “My mom and I made up two gifts for my dad. One is socks and one is pants because he always needs a clean pair of each.”

Row, row: The children of Farthing Wood Nursery School were privileged to receive a visit from Lee-Ann Persse, who will be rowing in the women’s pair for South Africa in the 2012 Olympic Games. Persse, the goddaughter of Farthing Wood Nursery owner Heather Sedgwick, shared stories about her rowing career with the children, and talked about her planned participation in the Olympic Games. The children were keen to find out whether she had ever encountered a crocodile while rowing – and what she would do if she came across one at the Olympic Games. Persse has just returned from rowing in Lucerne and is now in the final preparations for the Olympic Games, happening late next month.

Taking the lead: Mila Potelwa and Taariq Gordon are proud to have been elected head girl and boy of Somerset West Methodist Primary School this year, which sees several celebrations being planned to mark the 170th anniversary of the school.

Natural learning: These pupils of Madrasatur Rajaa School in Strand were recently taken on a hiking excursion to the Cecilia Forest at Kirstenbosch by members of the Ansar al Masakin Foundation. Shabier Chotia, the vice chairperson and founder of the foundation, says Ansar al Masakin aims to produce healthy, contributing members of society by leading youths through skill-development and awareness programmes that are designed to improve their physical, spiritual and mental wellbeing. If you’d like to find out more about the hikes offered by the Ansar al Masakin Foundation, you can give Shabier Chotia a call on 0 021 845 9062.

Going places: Somerset College recently announced the names of its six scholarship winners for entry into Grade 8 in 2013. All applicants had to undergo a two-hour exam at the college. Those who did exceptionally well in the written paper were then invited to attend an interview with a panel of staff members. Only after this rigorous process were the six candidates finally selected. Seen here (standing, from left) are Abigail Davies (Rhenish), Aurelia Mouton (Laerskool Eikestad) and Kelsey Greeff (Somerset College). In front are Kiera van Eeden (Somerset House), Dr Tim Nuttall (Somerset College headmaster), Matthew Dave (Applewood Preparatory) and Joshua Putterill (Somerset College).

A musical soul LOCAL writer and radio presenter Shiloh Noone will share his expertise on the subject of music during a talk at Strand Library at 16:00 next Tuesday. Titled Have We Lost the Soul in Music?, his talk will deal with a variety of topics: what is good and bad music, and is it personal? Has music evolved, dissolved or are we just getting old? Can the power of music change people, politics, heal the soul and unite cultures? The last 40 minutes of his talk will provide a forum for any questions his audience may harbour. The fifth edition of Noone’s rock history book, Seeker’s Guide to the Rhythm of Yesteryear, was recently released, and this month’s edition of Rolling Stone Magazine gave him its long-awaited acknowledgement with a book review. Last year Noone also launched a poetry book (featuring a foreword by Brad Pitt), and his latest work, Witches of Sark, is set to be launched next month for charity at the Imimbala Art Centre in Somerset West. This book claims to hold the truth about the conspiracy theories around the assassination of Princess Diana and the cause of Aids. “Every cent Shiloh Noone. will go to the

children,” Noone says. “There are no middleman costs, so if the paperback sells for R40, its R40 for a child.” Noone adds that he “wants the whole of the Helderberg to leave their TV and warm lounge” and join the launch. Guests will get to indulge in some warming soup, along with a little cheese and wine. Noone currently presents Songcatcher, a radio show reflecting on folk music, on Fine Music Radio 101.3 every Sunday. For more information you can give Shiloh Noone a call on 0 079 609 4700, or email him at 2 shiloh@telkomsa.net.

Small homes, big returns IN recent months Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and arguably the world’s top investment brain, has repeatedly said that private investors should be buying up as many single-family homes to rent out as they can afford. “And he has given several good reasons for this unequivocal advice, which we believe are just as relevant in the SA property market now as in the US and other property markets around the world,” says Jan Davel, MD of the RealNet estate agency group. In an interview on CNBC television, and again in the International Business Times, Buffett said both equities and single-family homes were attractive investments at the moment in terms of price – but if homes could be purchased at low rates and held for a long time, they would be a better investment. Indeed, he said, he would buy up “a couple of hundred thousand” homes right now if only he could find a practical way to manage them. “Then, asked what he would say to young investors trying to decide between equities and property, he immediately replied that they should buy a couple of single-family homes at distressed prices and find renters,” notes Davel. “One reason for this was that, as long as the management of such individual properties remained a logistical nightmare for big corporations, they would be drawn more to commercial properties and apartment complexes, leaving the single-family homes field wide open for private investors to acquire good assets very cheaply.”

And such homes are not only available at low prices, says Davel, but more affordable at the moment thanks to the fact that mortgage interest rates are at historic lows. “This reduces the minimum monthly repayment and makes it more likely that it will be covered by the rent that tenants are paying. In addition, although home loans are harder to come by, it is still possible in most cases to gear a large percentage of the purchase price –

MOSTERTSDRIFT

However, in March the US National Association of Realtors reported that investment purchases made up 27% of all new and existing home sales in the US during 2011, and NAR economist Lawrence Yun said investors were “swooping in” to take advantage of low prices. He also noted that, while optimism for the recovery of the market was part of the picture, a very big factor in the increased investor activity was the fact that rising rental

which is not something one can do when buying equities.” As it is, the number of buy-to-let purchases is already starting to rise, although not as fast in SA as in other parts of the world. In SA, the FNB Estate Agent Survey for the first quarter of 2012 found that buy-to-let purchasing had risen to account for 9% of all purchases, up from 8% in the previous four quarters, and from a 7% low point late in 2010.

incomes were easily expected to beat the returns one could get on cash “just sitting in the bank”. “It must be said that this is increasingly also the case in SA,” says Davel, “especially in areas where rental homes are in short supply and there is high demand due to expanded mining activity or infrastructure development. “And we believe it will shortly give significant additional impetus to the buy-to-let market.”

Selling a home is like courtship REMEMBER when you used to date? You had to look our best to make sure we made a positive impression. Selling your home and making a positive impression on a potential buyer is no different. Yet sadly many sellers list their homes for sale without ensuring their property is looking its absolute best. They lose out on making a positive impression on the buyer, and as a result they’re often offered less than their property deserves. You only get one chance to make a first impression. That first impression is critical to achieving the best price for your home. Statistics show that 70% of all property purchases are made emotionally, and then justified with logic. The way your home presents to the buyers plays a significant role in getting a purchaser to make an emotional connection with the property. Here are some valuable tips to ensure your property presents as it should: ) Clean up the garden. Cut the grass, weed the flower beds, and clear the dog poop. ) Keep pools clean. Sparkling pools make a great impression – green pools don’t. ) Make sure the entrance is looking its best. Keep it clean and repaint if needed. The front door should open and close easily. ) Clean the gutters and fascias, and repaint if needed. Leaking gutters are a sure

Talking Property by

Steve Caradoc-Davies sign that a property is poorly maintained. ) Have all roof leaks professionally repaired. You are legally obligated to disclose them to a buyer – so take away the problem and ensure the ceiling shows no damage. ) Ensure all your light fittings are in good working order – and replace dead globes. ) Keep carpets clean and smelling good. ) The kitchen and bathroom score big points with buyers, so make sure they are always spotless. Smelly laundry in the bathroom doesn’t help – nor do dirty dishes. ) Replace missing cupboard handles. ) Ensure pets are put safely away. Not everyone shares your love for pets, and

smelly animals can turn a buyer off in seconds. If you have indoor pets try air fresheners to mask the smell. ) If it’s overcast outside, switch your lights on and pull the curtains open. No one likes dark rooms. ) Empty the garage of old junk and make sure it’s always clean. ) De-clutter. Most of us collect stuff over the years and our living rooms end up overcrowded.Asktheadviceofyouragentorsomeone in the know: buyers need to see space. ) Don’t forget the power of smell. Fresh coffee, baked biscuits, fresh flowers. If in doubt get the opinion of someone else. As difficult as it may be, don’t take the comments personally. We’ve seen that giving attention to these issues can add as much as 10% to the selling price of your home – and for most sellers that’s a significant amount. Your professional agent will be able to give you the advice you need to make sure your property makes a great first impression with potential buyers – and get you the price you deserve ) Steve Caradoc-Davies is principal of Harcourts Platinum and director of Harcourts South Africa. The Meister effect IN the two short years since returning from Canada to her ancestral home in Africa, singer–songwriter Natasha Meister has become SA’s very own blues queen. At only 20 years of age, she has made a huge impact on local audiences, especially in the blues–funk niche. Natasha has a great bluesey, Motown voice, plays phenomenal electric and acoustic guitar, and is a gifted songwriter to boot. Soon after her arrival in Cape town she attracted the attention of veteran songwriter Tim Parr. It didn’t take long for offers from the Cape’s best musos to follow, and soon the Natasha Meister Band was formed with drummer Paul Tizzard and Roger Bashew on bass. Their combination of blues standards, inspired by the likes of Stevie Wonder, BB

King, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Ray Vaughan – plus Natasha’s own songs – soon became popular, and these early gigs paved the way for invitations to festivals such as the Oyster & Champagne Festival, Table Mountain Blues Summit, Synergy Live, Kleinmond Big Blues Music Festival, and Splashy Fen. Her first album, Halfway, produced by Roger Bashew and consisting entirely of her own compositions, has just been completed, and is available as an indie release. Catch the band at Bertie’s Moorings on Sunday at 18:00. Entrance is free. ) You can also catch the electrifying Gian Groen Band at Bertie’s tomorrow (Friday) at 21:00. Entrance is free.

OM GEE I CARING

Thursday, 14 June 2012

A gift given by the driven THE Helderberg Hospice and Imibala Trust were each recently given a donation of R5 000 by Okkie Potgieter, chairperson of the Western Cape branch of the Mercedes-Benz Club. The funds formed part of the money raised at the club’s 27th

AGM, a prestigious celebration held in the Lord Charles Grand Ballroom. Over R50 000 was raised for charity. The club also frequently takes part in car shows to raise funds for the needy – and works to give people lasting memories. Amid a

CHURCHES Make the best of the living years Let them grow through drama THE Living Years, a ballad by Mike and the Mechanics, strikes a nerve in most of us. We wish that we had spent more time with loved ones now long gone. We applaud the comment that no businessman near death has ever said, “I wish I had spent more time at the office.” We recognise instinctively that we need to spend as much time as possible with our family members. While feeling very low halfway through a period of “study leave” in the United States, I asked myself what I was doing there without my family. Right there and then I decided to return home! In fact, my question was prompted by a stranger who said he had spent years travelling all over the country on business, and deeply regretted all the family time he had missed. It is unnecessary and unhealthy to take respon-

RUDYARD HARRISON sibility for all family members, but there is an unavoidable interdependence in family life. A family therapist said, “We must remember that just as parents have a responsibility to their growing children, so children have an obligation to their ageing parents.” Love for others begins with love for our family members. I remember having a discussion

with my father when I was a rather serious-minded 11-year-old longing to have a dog and a bicycle. I made a strong sales pitch for a bicycle before we started looking for a dog, and my dad was not taken in. He pointed out very clearly that it was quite wrong of me to compare an inanimate object with a sentient being. People are far more important than things! It is not always easy to get on with our parents or our children, but we need to work at these relationships for the benefit of the family unit. There are many children running wild because their parents do not take their responsibilities seriously, and there are many seniors alone at home because their children do not take their obligations seriously. May you discover the rich rewards of family life this week! Go on; give your dad a big hug!

JENNIFER Pietersen, who heads up the drama ministry at the Somerset West Baptist Church, will hold free holiday drama workshops in the church hall for children aged 7 to 18 years later this month. Taking place from 26 to 28 June, the workshop aims to build confidence and inspire creativity. Through various theatre games, speech exercises and group improvisations, drama helps to develop good communication skills, as well as cultivate confidence in a positive environment, says Pietersen.

The class for children between the ages of 7 and 8 runs from 09:00 to 11:00; the next class, aimed at children between the ages of 9 and 12, takes place from 11:00 to 13:00. Finally, the class for youngsters aged 13 to 18 happens from 13:30 to 15:30. Only a limited number of children will be able to attend the workshop, so bookings are essential. If you’d like to book your child’s place, email his or her name and age, along with your contact details, to 2 drama.swbc@gmail.com before Monday 25 June.

The youth theatre group members, striking a few devastating poses, are (from left) Emma Ramsbottom, Megan Harvett, Liam de Bliquy, Simone Wynborn and Michael Steyn.

Give yourself a free lunch

A first for the basin IT is now accepted that, as part of the principles of our legal system, parties to a dispute have an obligation to consider mediation. No longer will businesses have to engage in long, expensive court processes, say those at the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which has formed a partnership with the Stellenbosch University Business School and Equillore to establish the African Commercial Dispute Settlement Centre (ACDSC). The aim is to give the business community an independent facility that can help with the fast and cost-effective resolution of disputes. This initiative is in line with the new rules that make mediation a compulsory step in the litigation process. The introduction of the service to the Helderberg branch of the Chamber of

Commerce and Industry took place late last month at Erinvale Estate. At any stage of a dispute any one of the parties may now refer their dispute to the ACDSC for settlement by means of mediation, a confidential process in which an independent accredited mediator assists the parties to explore all possible solutions and reach their own settlement outside of court. The mediator never makes an order, and a settlement can only be reached if both parties agree. The settlement agreement is then drafted by the mediator and can be made an order of court. Visit www.capetownchamber.com to read more about mediation, and to refer your dispute for mediation. Alternatively, you can get in touch with Moeniera on 0 021 402 4352.

TOURISM TALK

Get a handle on local tourism BUSINESSES, tourism and hospitality establishments, entrepreneurs and all who seek an insight into the tourism industry in the Helderberg are invited to a meeting at 18:00 on 20 June at Erinvale Estate, Somerset West. This event, presented by the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Helderberg branch, will give attendees the chance to en-

gage with key role players in tourism, such as Cape Town Tourism, Sir Lowry’s Pass Tourism and Business Development Trust, Stellenbosch 360, Stellenbosch Wine Routes and NH Lord Charles Hotel. Cost: R50 (members); R100 (non-members). RSVP to Corlia Coetser on 0 021 851 2886 or at 2 corlia@capechamber.co.za before 18 June.

WITH falling share markets around the world and the luxury of hindsight as a guide, this week’s advice is about diversification – the one and only “free lunch” in investing. The basic elements of any investment portfolio are the underlying asset classes: property, bonds, cash and shares. Everyone is exposed to a collection of assets either directly or indirectly. The average person owns a home, belongs to a pension fund and buys unit trusts, which effectively exposes them to all of the above asset classes. This is called diversification – or, as many people prefer to say, “not putting all your eggs in one basket”. Diversification could be considered the cure for the most common cause of investment failure: fear and greed. As the technology bubble grew, greedy investors sold property, borrowed money and invested everything they had in dot-com companies in the hope of making their fortunes. Many did – well, at least for a while – and then the dot-coms turned into dot-bombs, and the rest is history. Fear is presently driving the market, with

many investors choosing to abandon shares in favour of cash, thus realising paper losses, which could have been avoided by holding a diversified investment portfolio. Diversify not only across asset classes, but also within. A share portfolio should consist of at least 10 different shares held in different sectors. A property portfolio should consist of properties in various locations and different uses (that is, residential and commercial). Investing in South Africa exposes your investment to an emerging market risk. By diversifying geographically you protect your investments against a weaker rand and many other local risks.

ANGLING COLUMN

Now s the best time to collect red bait MOST boating activities were curtailed by the inclement weather experienced during the past weekend. The South League boat competition held from Kleinbaai was also called off due to the weather. The few catches reported by shore anglers were dismal, with only a few dassie and galjoen reported from the Betty’s Bay area. Now that the cold weather has really set in, most shore anglers will all be targeting winter fish like galjoen, dassie and white steenbras. One blessing from the rough seas is the plentiful supply of red bait pods lying on the beaches, washed ashore after being broken off the rocks in the stormy weather. There were many anglers – rock, surf and boat alike – combing the beaches during the weekend and replenishing their red bait stocks for winter fishing. Some anglers collect the bait in the pods, while others cut the pods open and store the

bait in buckets. With the slight pushing tide, many clusters of red bait pods can be retrieved in the shallows. The most-sought after red bait is the sand red bait, which is often pushed ashore with coarse pods of rock red bait at Strandfontein beach and Macassar. This sand red bait is a lighter-coloured red bait; it has an orange–yellowish colour.

It is also softer than the other red bait, and is easier to tie onto smaller hooks, such as the 1/0s used for galjoen. The same bait matures sooner than rock or mountain red bait. Galjoen are partial to the red, soft and stringy bait when it’s smelly and mature. While dassie, wildeperd and musselcracker also like rotten bait, they prefer firmer, fresh bait. This is also the time of the season to fish with fresh white mussel, if it is available. When fishing in the Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond area, as well as all along the Hermanus coastline, pudding or shale worm also gives better results, but it is very difficult to obtain this so called “wonderworm” when the tides are quite low at spring tide. One often receives requests from new anglers in the area for a detailed map showing all the well-known fishing spots. I always try to help by explaining a few

spots, but land up explaining that there is only one way to get to know the area – and that is by experience. The best way to obtain experience of these areas is by joining a club. I incidentally asked my son Barend how he would reply to a new fisherman in the area wanting to know the ins and outs of fishing around these areas. He said he should first get the correct tackle, and then pay school fees like everybody else! A newcomer to our angling shores mentioned that he found the local anglers were reluctant to give away their secrets and hot spots. My advice is to keep on fishing, and try stealing ideas, techniques and what baits to use – fish with your eyes without annoying the anglers. For all your reel repairs and services, contact Art on 021 854 3831 Remember to send your fishing news and photos to bjridgway@telkomsa.net.

BOWLING Bowling boffin: Andrew Masamba of Somerset West Bowls Club (SWBC) recently won the Hottentots Holland Novice Men s Champion of Champions despite strong opposition from Gordon s Bay, Helderberg, Strand and Van der Stel Bowling Clubs. Helderberg top the log once again AFTER last week’s convincing victory against bottom-of-the-log Brackenfell by 46–19, Helderberg moved to top of the log together with Bellville, although Helderberg have the better points difference. Bellville beat NNK by 34–26 at Bellville, and are the only unbeaten team in the Super League B – a situation Helderberg will want to remedy when the two sides meet in the Strand on Saturday. Last weekend Helderberg started slowly in their away match against Brackenfell, played on an extremely wet and soggy field. The hosts opened the scoring with a penalty goal, and shortly afterwards Helderberg’s flyhalf Charlton Cloete also slotted a penalty. De Wet Neethling, Helderberg’s star lock, scored the only try of the first half when he crashed over in the corner in the 32nd

minute after a loose ruck to take the score to 8–3. In the 36th minute Brackenfell scored another penalty kick to make the half-time score 8–6. After the break Brackenfell briefly took a 9–8 lead after another successful penalty attempt. However, the stern words by Helderberg’s coaches at the break had the desired effect, and the visitors slowly gained control of the match with the tight five outstanding in all phases. In the 10th minute of the second half, Helderberg fullback Gerhard du Plessis charged down a defensive kick and fed right wing and captain Enrico Swartz, who rounded off to give his team a 13–9 lead. Replacement flyhalf Shahied Davids slotted the conversion to make the scoreboard 15–9.

When left wing Bradley Mentoor intercepted a wayward pass on his own 10-metre line and left everybody standing to score his team’s third try, it was the beginning of the end for Brackenfell (20–9). In the 24th minute the visitors won a lineout on the Brackenfell line, and lock Wikus van Staden burst through the defence for another try. Shahied Davids converted the kick (27–9). Brackenfell added a penalty goal (27–12). In the 30th minute Mentoor proved his elusiveness by sidestepping three opponents to score his second try (32–12). Brackenfell scored a consolation try when their star centre powered over the line for an easy try, which was converted (32–19). Replacement eighthman Carel du Preez ran in another try from the 22-metre line,

and Shahied Davids duly converted (39–19). The final try of the match came about when replacement flank Emilius Streicher scored in the dying seconds. Davids converted to make the final score 46–19. The players of the match were lock forward Wikus van Staden and left wing Bradley Mentoor. Other results: Helderberg II 22, Brackenfell 13; Helderberg III 26, Brackenfell 10; u.20 A 19, Brackenfell 3; u.20 B 5, Durb-Bell 35; and Helderberg fourth 6, Villager 15. The programme for this weekend at the Charles Morkel stadium is: Friday at 19:00 – fourth team vs Brackenfell. Saturday (A field) at 13:25 – u.20 A vs Bellville; 14:45 – second team vs Bellville; 16:00 – first team vs Bellville. B field at 13:35 – third team vs Bellville. Astro opening Trophy triumph: Representatives of Helderberg Good time for a good cause: The De Beers u.17 football team, with coach Ryan Porter, will be playing their second-round match of the cup finals this Saturday. The team has within its ranks a number of talented boys from poorer communities who struggle every week to overcome obstacles such as funding transport, membership fees and soccer gear to play the beautiful game. Every Tuesday and Thursday a group of these boys walk for about 90 minutes from Lwandle and Nomzamo to the De Beers fields behind Somerset Mall to attend practices. After practice parents and coaches then take the boys home. In an effort to help and support these young stars of tomorrow, De Beers will be hosting an Old School Disco Party at the De Beers clubhouse on Saturday. Tickets in aid of this junior football development initiative cost only R30. The party begins at 20:00, and continues until late. Drinks and food will also be on sale. Former club Leibro DJ, Kevin will handle the music for the evening. All club members, friends and supporters have been asked to support this good cause. If you’de like to find out more about the upcoming event, you can give Anton Fortuin a call on 0 082 704 2680.

Local clubs face disciplinary hearings THE drama of club rugby never ceases to amaze me. Two of our local clubs, namely Sir Lowrians and Strand United, faced disciplinary hearings at Newlands last week, with mixed results. Sir Lowrians will lose four log points for fielding an unregistered player, while Strand United came off better in their case with Milnerton. Milnerton received a large fine for abandoning the match, and had a player suspended for the rest of the season. The issue of crowd control raised its ugly head again, but I insist that the crowd should control themselves. If you are not able to support your club in a respectable, responsible manner or follow the rules at the venue, stay at home – you are not needed in club rugby! This week’s fixtures see St Georges and Raithby Universals having the week off. ) Helderberg vs Bellville (home) This top-of-the-table clash is sure to provide fireworks. Helderberg will be tested in all departments by a strong Bellville side. Home-ground advantage is sure to play a part

in this match; a victory for Berge will confirm their supremacy in the first round of the league – and give them one foot back in the Super League A. Referee: Quinton Immelman. Prediction: Helderberg to win by 10 or less. ) Macassar vs Milnerton (home) Macassar are having their best season in quite a while. Milnerton, on the other hand, seem to be having more boardroom battles (Strand United and Silvertree) than any other club. With a patchy history between these clubs, I think a more composed Macassar should have the upper hand. The home team could even be quietly anticipating taking all five points. Referee: Sinethemba Mrulwa. Prediction: Macassar to win by 8 or more. ) Strand United vs Silvertree (home) After a tough two weeks, United are back at home against a very inconsistent Silvertree. This is a fixture normally won by the home team, but we have seen funnier things happen this season. Referee: Jacque Pienaar. Prediction: Strand United to win by 8.

) Sir Lowrians vs Eerste River (home) This will be Rivas first visit to Sir Lowry Park in quite a while, and it has never been a happy hunting ground for them. Sir Lowrians are under pressure to win with bonus points as other league-winning contenders, Macassar, are piling on the pressure. This will be Rivas biggest test since promotion. Referee: Riaan Tolken. Prediction: Sir Lowrians to win by 15 or more. ) Strand vs Young Wesleys (away) Strand’s confidence is growing week after week. After an initial dip, they are competing well after two victories. This away match against Wesleys will test their character, though. Another win on the road could place them in second position with playing a few of the other top teams at home. Referee: Mornay Colville. Prediction: Strand to win by 5 or more. ) All Saints vs Temperance (away) All Saints will still be upbeat after their great victory over log-leaders Violets last week, but facing the bottom team this week might be a bigger challenge. Temperance are

RUGBY

having a terrible season after being promotion contenders last year. All Saints should bury them early. Referee: Alex Stals. Prediction: All Saints to win by 12 or more. ) Strand Pioneers vs Peninsula (away) After two consecutive losses, Pioneers will be determined for a win to keep in contention. Peninsula are struggling lately, but will be a more confident team playing at home. Referee: Aden Sineker. Prediction: Pioneers to win by 4 or more. It has been officially confirmed that there will be an age gap on the WP Disas and WP Amateurs of 25 years old. Congratulations to Jamian Maree (Strand RFC) and Carel du Preez (Helderberg), who have been selected for the WP u.21 Amateurs squad. --

Sir Lowrians set matters straight in Nyanga ASLA Devco Sir Lowrians had a superb day at the office on Saturday, with all four teams winning with four try bonus points against Lagunya at the Nyanga Rugby Stadium. Lagunya have been Sir Lowrians’ bogey team for the past two seasons – they always struggled away to the men from Nyanga. Last weekend, however, the Navy Train dispelled all myths that they could not beat Nyanga at home when the first team trounced Lagunya 31–13. The first-team game started off very tensely, with the referee trying to stamp his mark on the game. Sir Lowrians were penalised too often, and lost momentum when attacks were launched. They appeared to be trying too hard, and did not play intelligent rugby. Sir Lowrians were simply not clinical enough in the red zone, and wasted opportunities to score due to unforced errors. With the referee marshalling the breakdown area, they should have opted to spread the ball wide earlier and run the Lagunya defence ragged. However, they opted to keep the ball with their forwards, which led to them being penalised too often – sometimes to the surprise of

captain Edward Makhundayi. The half-time score was 7–0 in the favour of Sir Lowrians. The pep talk at half time seemed to inject the necessary steam into the Navy Train and, along with the strategic replacements shortly after half time, they gained the upper hand. Lagunya were toothless on attack, and are now firm favourites for relegation. Sir Lowrians adopted a sevens style of play in the fourth quarter and ran in four more tries against the tiring Lagunya. Earl Rose once again displayed his class and had many a Lagunya player grabbing at him in vain as he evaded them with his pace and swift sidestepping. Replacement hooker Thurston “Pitbull” Meyer scored a magnificent try on the wing in the right-hand corner, wrapping up an all-round team performance. Meyer was also awarded the Asla Magwebu man-of-the-match prize for his powerful display. The second team won 31–0 and comprehensively outplayed Lagunya. Coach Kevin Britz’s team is once again having a superb season, and the hard yards he and the team have put in are being rewarded

with their consistent performances, with only one unfortunate blemish so far this season. They do, however, still top the log, and are on 30 points after 7 games. The third team, playing under the astute leadership of captain Dirk van Heerden, started things off well for the Navy Train by claiming a convincing 24–0 victory. They played well in testing conditions as the Cape winter winds and chills made it difficult at times. They are in first position on the log, with Franschhoek trailing them by a point. The u.20 team won by default (24–0) as Lagunya failed to field an u.20 team. They are in top position on the log, and remain undefeated on 32 points from 7 games. This week Sir Lowrians host Eersterivier RFC at Sir Lowry Park. Entrance costs R10. Supporters are reminded that the 2012 season supporters’ rugby jerseys are being sold at R100, and orders can be placed via Twitter @SirLowriansRFC, or on the club’s Facebook page (Sir Lowrians Rugby Football Club). Stock is limited. Fans not attending the games can follow the teams on Twitter for regular updates on match day.

West Hockey Club’s fourth team, dribbles the ball past a Bellville player during a match played on the new AstroTurf hockey field at Parel Vallei High School on Saturday. The Somerset West team won the match 3–0. Ketts, who is also the head of sport at Parel Vallei High School, was one of the people instrumental in getting the long-awaited AstroTurf to the school. The new field officially opens on Friday, with matches scheduled from 12:00 to 17:30. The school’s u.18 A girls and boys play against Worcester Gymnasium in the main matches of the day. The full schedule of games at the official opening appears on page 54. Photo: Peter Bee

LONDON 2012

Helderberg trio off to Olympics THREE members of the Hottentots Holland Weightlifting Club in the Strand have been included in Team South Africa, set to represent our country at the Olympic Games in London from 27 July to 12 August. They are Hester Montgomery (who’ll be going as a technical official for the London Olympic weightlifting competition), Jean Greeff, a weightlifter in the 94 kg division, and Aveenash Pandoo, the national coach of the South African Weightlifting Federation. Montgomery’s nomination came from the International Federation of Weightlifting, and she is the only woman in a group of four officials selected from Africa to be part of the games. She is also the only category-one woman in SA to referee at the games. Montgomery made her debut as a weightlifting official in 1999, and has continually refereed at major international championships and games, such as the All African Games and Commonwealth Games. She says the most remarkable event she has officiated at to date has been the Afro–Asian Games in Hyderabad, India, in 2003, where she also obtained her category-one referee licence. Montgomery also voices her pride of all women involved in sport. Jean Greeff has the honour of being the only weightlifter in the country to have been selected to represent South Africa at the games. Greeff says he is particularly proud of his achievement as he is following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Jannie Greeff, who represented South Africa at the Olympics as a weightlifter in 1956.

As a youth weightlifter Jean was a medallist at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India, and through hard work steadily progressed through the junior and later senior ranks to win many championships in South Africa and overseas. He recently won a bronze medal at the Continental Olympic qualifier in Kenya. Aveenash Pandoo will be representing the country at the games as the national coach and manager for weightlifting. This will be his second representation as an Olympic coach. He is optimistic about Greeff’s participation at the Olympics; he says Greeff has excellent potential, and will be utilising these games as a stepping stone for the 2016 games in Brazil. Having these three members of the local weightlifting club at the games will indeed be a very proud moment for the Hottentots Holland Club, which was founded in 1950 by Ozzie Traut and has been run by Hubert and Hester Montgomery since 1955. Over the years this club has been the feeding ground for many national and international champions. The club is also the oldest active club in the country, and for a number of years has also been the headquarters of the South African Weightlifting Federation, not to mention the office of the national coach. Greeff, Montgomery and Pandoo will be attending an intensive training camp at the Olympic training centre in Warsaw, Poland, before jetting off ahead of the Olympics on 14 July with the rest of Team South Africa.
