Waiting to be taught Learners at ACJ Phakade Pri mary School were sent home at 09:00 on Wednesday due to the ongoing goslow by teach ers, which started on Monday after toilets overflowed and left parts of the school flooded with sewage. With only limited facil ities for children (nine toilets for girls and seven for boys), and only one toilet for teachers to share, teachers resorted to us ing buckets. HELDERBERG CRIME WATCH: SECURITY REGULATOR ORDERS WATCH TO REGISTER

Watch security ‘illegal’

DALEEN FOUCHÉ Helderberg Crime Watch (HCW) has been found by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) to be operating a security company illegally. In a letter sent to HCW in October, PSIRA states that HCW may not render a security service as it is not registered as a security service provider. It points out that “no person may render a security service if not validly registered as a security service provider”. PSIRA states in the letter that a follow-up inspection will be conducted in two months’ time “to assess progress made to register the business”. HCW has since embarked on a

‘‘

process to register with PSIRA. According to Siziwe Zuma, spokesperson for PSIRA, the investigation into HCW was launched after an anonymous complaint was submitted. “The business was given a warning letter to cease all operations until the business and its directors were registered.” She says if HCW is found to be operating without registration again, a criminal case will be opened and a letter of warning will be sent to mitigate criminal charges. In newspaper advertisements, HCW states they are “Leaders in community policing” and provide proactive patrolling, meet and greet services, roadside assistance, holiday patrols, a 24-7 control room in any emergency, and tactical and K9 re-

sponse through a security company. Peter Brand, chairperson of HCW, confirmed that HCW has been operating since receiving PSIRA’s letter and continues to provide its emergency response services, via its service provider, Vetus Schola. Brand says he received the letter from PSIRA in October last year, but says there was no obligation to “cease operations”. He says the letter stated that HCW may not “render a security service”. “We had never considered ourselves a security company, as we are not in the alarm or guarding business, particularly as we contract a security company to carry out operations, and we had some doubt regarding PSIRA’s interpretation of our operations. “Nevertheless, we decided that it could do us no harm as we felt that our business model and operations would not be affected in any way through membership of PSIRA, and we have taken the appropriate steps,

which will be finalised shortly. This would make us fully compliant with PSIRA’s requirements.” Turn to page 8 for Brand’s full statement. Meanwhile, PSIRA is investigating the Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch after receiving an anonymous complaint against them. Zuma says that only once the investigation is concluded at the end of February, will PSIRA be able to comment on the nature of the investigation. Louis le Riche, chairperson of the Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch (SWNW), says a complaint was made that the SWNW is running a security company. “In broad terms, that the SWNW is providing a security service for a fee.” Le Riche says under no circumstances is the SWNW running a security company. “Its function is to coordinate the voluntary activities of its members, who act as eyes and ears for the police and security companies.”

He says that the SWNW does not charge a fee of any kind, in accordance with its constitution, but does receivedonationsfromthecommunity. Le Riche says the debit order system that has been set in place for those who wish to regularly contribute to the upkeep of the radio control room, was presented to PSIRA as the charging of fees. Major-General Johan Brand, cluster commander of the Khayelitsha police cluster, says only once the PSIRA investigation is concluded will the CPF election be held. He further states that HCW will not be allowed membership in the upcoming CPF elections, as the CPF constitution does not allow for organisations that charge fees for security reasons to be a member. Peter Brand, chairperson of HCW, says this will not be a problem for HCW. Maj-Gen Brand says a separate security forum in which the security companies cooperate with the police will be established.

‘Quiet’ toddlers die after car burns DELIAH BRINKHUIS The Macassar toddlers who were severely burnt in a fire in a broken down car last Thursday may have been playing with matches.

Don’t buy stolen goods – police In light of a recent spike in house breakins and robberies reported to Lwandle police, they have issued a request to the public and second-hand shops to refrain from purchasing goods which they suspect are stolen. Any community members or secondhand shop owners could be arrested and charged for the possession of stolen goods should they be found with such goods. Police are continuing to execute stopand-search operations and random checks at second-hand shops. Anyone with information about individuals selling stolen property is asked to phone Lwandle Police Station on 021 845 2060 or 10111. A reward will be given to individuals who have provided positive feedback.

This is according to Macassar Police. The three year olds, Oyama Dingani and Siyanda Saul, were allegedly playing in the car at the home of one of the boys in Nomza Mapungwana Street in Macassar Village at 10:00 on Thursday when the car caught alight. Oyama’s uncle, Mzoxolo Masimini (43), says for two years he has been in the process of repairing the engine of the 1981 Toyota Corolla that was parked next to his house. Oyama was in he and his wife’s care when his mother, Pumza Dingani (31), worked on a farm in Worcester during the week. Masimini’s wife, Vivian Mbema (42), says the toddlers regularly played in the car. Half an hour after the boys had gone outside, she heard her neighbour screaming that the car was on fire and that the boys were inside. “I couldn’t get outside quickly as I was walking with a walking stick. I was too scared to look,” says Mbema. She said another neighbour, Monde Jamda, removed the boys from the burning vehicle. Jamda says the back door of the car was open and the win-

Siyanda Saul (3), in photo, and his friend Oyama Dingani both died in the Red Cross Hospital last Thursday after suffering se vere burns when the car they were playing in, caught alight. dow of the driver’s side was half rolled down, but the fire was too intense for him to get close to the car. “I then saw a child between the front seats and tried opening the door closest to me, but the handles burnt my hands,” he recalls. He managed to grab the boy by the back of his pants and pulled him from the flames. “I went back to look for more kids and through the smoke and flames I saw another child standing on the passenger seat. I tried grabbing him by the hands, but it was too difficult as he was severely burnt. I took my shirt off and kicked the back window out and lifted him from the car,” he says. Jamda says he wrapped the

boy in his shirt and left the scene as he was too traumatised. Mbema recalls how a man driving past stopped and took the toddlers to the Macassar Healthcare Centre. Sizeka Saul (36), Siyanda’s mother, expressed her gratitude towards the staff of the health centre. “I will forever be grateful to them for what they did. Doctors, nurses and cleaning staff were consoling me and prayed for me. All of them tried their best.” Siyanda was rushed from the clinic to the Red Cross Hospital by ambulance, where he died three hours later. Oyama was airlifted by helicopter and died before reaching the hospital. Saul was at her son’s bedside

when he died. “I sat with him for three hours after doctors told me that there was nothing they could do for him. He was peaceful when he breathed his last breath.” Saul says her son had been “an easy child” who developed quickly and never fought. “He and Oyama were both quiet little boys and best friends. He always sang when he wanted something... Ndilambile, ndilambile he would sing when he was hungry. He was a lovely child and for three years he made me very happy,” she says. Spokesperson for the Macassar Police, Sgt Chrisy Lewaks says an inquest docket was opened and the case is still under investigation.

Gesinsmoord in De Zalze skok

8 ABELIA STREET PRICES VALID TILL 2 FEBRUARY 2015 OR WHILE STOCKS LAST

RAYMOND WILLEMSE Hulle was ’n hegte gesin.

Horrid conditions send teachers on strike DALEEN FOUCHÉ

A crowd of concerned parents congregated outside ACJ Phakade Primary School yesterday (Wednesday) morning in support of a go-slow undertaken by the Lwandle school’s teachers. The parents were present in protest of the “dangerous conditions” at the school. The teachers embarked on a goslow on Monday, claiming their pleas for help have fallen on deaf ears. “We have to relieve ourselves in buckets in the classrooms,” says a teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We have no more dignity and the children laugh at us.” Other issues include stagnant raw sewage outside classrooms and the halting of construction on unfinished school buildings. Learners were sent home at noon on Monday and at 09:00 on Tuesday. Yesterday morning principal Thobile Majingo waited for the arrival of a provincial education department representative until 09:00; his wait was in vain.

The learners were once again sent home, while a delegation from the school accompanied Majingo to the department’s district office. The school, established in 2012, has been housed in temporary classrooms. Construction on the permanent buildings commenced in January last year. However, Majingo says the contractor, who was supposed to be back on site on Tuesday 6 January, never showed up and no work has been done this year. “We expected the buildings to be completed in May, but now that does not seem likely,” says Majingo. Departmental spokesperson Jessica Shelver confirms the completion date for construction is set for May and adds that the contractor will be back on site on Monday. Majingo says the completion of the permanent building will solve the ablution facility problem, as staffers have no ablution facility after their facility’s septic tank overflowed. He says teachers cannot use the learners’ facilities, as these have been vandalised and are already overcrowded. “There are only nine

This, Majingo says, cannot continue as learners cannot be left unattended. Shelver says a contractor visited the school last week and found that the septic tank was overflowing, but

could not “mitigate the situation”. She adds the Department of Transport and Public Works has been instructed to empty the septic tank and will deliver 20 chemical toilets should the problem not be resolved. But Majingo says there is no space for chemical toilets and he will not accept this as a solution. He explains the sewage problem goes beyond the school yard, as a

sewage pipe at the school gate also leaked last week. He says the municipality fixed the leak, but sewage from the leak and the overflowing septic tank is still on the school property and has accumulated behind classrooms and next to the school kitchen. A health inspector apparently visited the school yesterday to assess the situation. Shelver says the district director gave permission for the school to close earlier this week, for the Department of Transport and Public Works to take the appropriate steps. “We are taking this matter very seriously in the interest of both learners and teachers,” she says. “As a rule, the department prioritises requests of this nature as they have direct health implications for our learners.” Teachers remained at the school to do administrative work yesterday, but refused to teach The group of parents who gathered outside the school gave their full support to teachers. “We are very worried about the conditions at the school,” said one of the parents.

5 Not enough schools for learners DistrictMail

Nuus News

29 January, 2015

DELIAH BRINKHUIS As the new school year started last week, scores of learners had to be turned away from primary and high schools that just cannot meet the demand for schooling in the Helderberg.

SPRING TIDE RESCUE: A group of 21 people found themselves in a dangerous predicament when they were trapped by the incoming tide on a cove at Dappat se Gat, Kogelbaai (between Gordon’s Bay and Pringle Bay) on Sunday 25 January. NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says it appears the beachgoers were not aware of the new moon spring tide that would cut off and engulf the popular rocky outcrop at high tide. During normal tide, these rocks are easi ly accessible even at high tide. NSRI Simon’s Town, a provincial Health Department EMS rescue squad and the Red Cross AMS Skymed rescue helicopter were dispatched, while a Wilderness Search and Rescue team also aided. Everyone brought to safety and nobody was injured. For a video and gallery of the rescue effort, visit www.districtmail.com. PHOTO: ALFRED THORPE (@VUURTORING)

Adding to the problem of overcrowding at both primary and high schools, is the demand for English schooling. Last year the DistrictMail reported on plans for additional primary and high schools for the area. Construction on a new school at Rusthof for learners with special needs is set to start in June. Although a high school for Gordon’s Bay has been on the cards since 2013, a site is yet to be found. Two primary schools are also expected to be built in Sir Lowry’s Pass and Macassar, but a site for the Sir Lowry’s Pass school still needs to be found. Bernard Simons, principal of Gordon High School, says accommodating English-speaking learners is challenging as the school has only one Grade 8 class, which already accommodates around 50 learners. They currently have 60 Grade 8s, who have no chance of being accepted, on a waiting list. “Parents visit the school daily, hoping to have their children enrolled in an English class. There is a need for another high school as many learners from the Helderberg have to go to other areas for schooling.” Zandvliet High principal Richard Basson echoed Simons’ sentiments and said despite appealing to parents to enrol their children on time, they still receive late applications. Parel Vallei High has only been

able to accommodate 260 of its 461 applications for Grade 8 this year. Christmas Tinto Primary in Lwandle has 40 Grade 1s on its waiting list. It enrolled 164 Grade 1s across its four Grade 1 classrooms. “We only had 70 Grade 1 applications at the end of last year. The rush came on the first school day; about 10% of the late applications are children from the Eastern Cape,” says principal Mphicothi Qantolo. Moegamat Waries, principal at the new Nomzamo Primary which

‘‘

The school has 53 Grade 1s on its waiting list, with 160 who could not be accommodated. Waries says late applications were received for all three grades, with the total coming to 108 learners who were not admitted. Godfrey Julies, principal of Rusthof Primary in Strand, says the school is bursting at the seams. The school has 204 Grade 1s and, while all applications were finalised last year with no learners on a waiting list, Julies says schools in the Strand are overcrowded. Dr GJ Joubert has 70 learners on a waiting list, who they hope will be accepted at other schools. A spokesperson for the school says additional

mobile classes is not an option as there is no space at their premises. At Hendrik Louw, 150 Gr 1s are enrolled and 50 are on a waiting list. Principal John Reynecke says Grade 1 enrolment is challenging as learners from their Grade R classes get preferential acceptance. Beaumont was able to accommodate 172 of its 204 Grade 1 applications, while Somerset West Primary has 111 Grade 1s registered for this year. The school received four late applications last week. Macassar Primary has 116 Grade 1s who are hopeful that they will find a place in school this year. “We urge parents to apply on time, but we have the problem of late applications year after year,” says deputy principal Ronald Ras. He says all classrooms, including computer labs, are already in use and their hope is that the provincial sducation department will permit them to appoint another Grade 1 teacher and erect mobile classes. Ninety-five Gr 1s were admitted to Gordon’s Bay Primary, while 35 remain on a waiting list. DistrictMail asked the education department how Grade 1s on waiting lists will be accommodated, as well as whether additional schools and classrooms would be built in the Helderberg. Departmental spokesperson Jessica Shelver says details could only be given once the department has finalised its 10-day snap survey to establish the actual count of enrolled learners and staff at each school, at local schools. “We expect numbers will increase once again, because of ongoing migration into the province and general population growth.”

Mail Need for more schools is critical Despite the urgent need for new schools in the Helderberg, there are no immediate plans to have any built. This applies to both primary and high schools, despite the fact that most of the existing state primary and high schools in the area are crammed to absolute capacity. These schools also have long waiting lists and are forced to turn scores of learners away every year. This scenario has been dragging on for years, and the need for new primary and high schools for the area is now critical in order to cope with the growth in the area. A few schools have had extra classrooms – built-on to increase the capacity of the school, but it is not enough to cope with the amount of school-going children residing in the area. Hundreds of people are also flocking to the Helderberg from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape with their families, only to learn that there is no place for their children at the schools in the area. The situation is totally unacceptable and somebody needs to stand up and take responsibility. Someone needs do something about it.

‘There is gold in the Helderberg streets’ Beggars at traffic lights say: “I don’t want help, there is gold on the streets of the Helderberg.” Too many people still give directly to people living on the streets instead of supporting charities aimed at getting them off the streets. The message that giving to people who live on the streets and any direct form of donations, simply keeps them on the streets, apparently does not get through to the public! Somerset West Night Shelter is doing such an awesome job – if you want to give, please give to them.

HCW responds to PSIRA investigation Helderberg Crime Watch (HCW) received a letter from the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) in October 2014, where they stated, after they had conducted an investigation, that “HCW was not registered as a security service provider, and may not render a security service”, and they would conduct a “follow up inspection after two months to assess progress made”– there was no obligation to “cease operations” – see enclosed letter from PSIRA. (We have published this letter on the DistrictMail website – ED). We have responded timeously to PSIRA. We had never considered ourselves a security company, as we are not in the alarm or guarding business, particularly as we contract a security company to carry out operations, and we had some doubt regarding PSIRA’s interpretation of our operations. Nevertheless, we decided that it could do us no harm, as we felt that our business model and operations would not be affected in any way through membership of PSIRA, and we have taken the appropriate steps, which will be finalised shortly – this would make us fully compliant with PSIRA’s requirements. We are very happy that PSIRA is taking an

How some are allowed to flaunt building regulations Isn’t it strange how some people are allowed to transgress building regulations, such as ignoring street boundary lines or building lines? Of course, for some officials the regulations allow for “interpretation”, not by common sense as one would expect, but depending on who it is that asks, or is advised to ask for ït – as long as one has the “means” to convince the officials. Building inspectors are supposed to visit all building sites in their allocated area, and if by any chance something unusual or illegal is spotted – which is rare in a region where almost everyone observes the regulations – they are supposed to draft a report to be scrutinised by their superiors. Because their allocated time is limited and, above all, their jobs are at stake, this results in a real no-go or slow-go for inspections. Are the inspectors to blame? Since the regulations conveniently provide for faulty work (transgressions) to be auto-

active interest in our community. This can only be a good thing for everyone – there was previously no mention of any requirement for us to be registered with PSIRA, but we are happy to comply with their request. HCW continues to perform its proactive emergency response services to the community, via its service provider, Vetus Schola Boland, and continues to assist local law enforcement authorities and respond to its contributors in emergency situations. Prior to the CPF election meeting on 18 December 2014 we were informed by SAPS that, due to the on-going PSIRA investigation HCW would be excluded from the CPF election procedure. If that is the case going forward, it would not present a problem for HCW, and we will continue to cooperate closely with the local law enforcement authorities, as this remains in the community’s best interest. We will be monitoring the situation closely. We have no further comments to make, apart from thanking you for your continued interest, and would appreciate it if you could publish our response in its entirety.

matically “accepted” if the owner calls for an inspection and the inspection doesn’t take place within the prescribed period, the inspectors are not bothered. Of course, this rule is also subject to interpretation”. It is easy to issue a “departure” from regular procedure if needs be, which then allows the surrounding neighbours to object, but of course they seldom do. So, it depends on who you are, what your means are, who your friends are for the authorities keep themselves out of trouble. That is the way these “regulations” are applied. There are two ways to react – being philosophical and accepting, or doing something and being subjected to victimisation. However, never think that you will rectify a bad public practice like this.

Gewoonlik is dit The Tibetan Book of the Dead. Hulle kan my eksemplaar van The Tibetan Book of the Dead ook leen, ek is klaar daarmee …

FANTASTIC PRIZE UP FOR GRABS! Central MiniMarket in Somerset West is spon soring a fantastic prize for DistrictMail readers in a competition that starts next week. One lucky reader will win a voucher to the value of R1 500 from Central MiniMarket in the competition, in which readers have to cut out and paste four puz zle pieces that will be published, one a week, during February. The entry form will be in next week’s DistrictMail, so be sure to get your copy. The owners of Central MiniMarket are seen here with Stefan Kolver (far right), advertising manager of the DistrictMail. From the left are Miguel, Neves and Fernando Gatinho.

DistrictMail to cost a little bit more The price of DistrictMail increases by 20c from next week (Thursday, 5 February), when the publication will cost R6,40 instead of R6,20. While we have tried to keep the cost of your weekly local newspaper down as far as possible, this annual increase is needed for us to keep pace with our rising cost of production.

We aim to continue providing you with local news and information you value, and would love to hear from you if you have suggestions or feedback. Phone Annelien Dean, the publisher, or Tasmin Cupido, the news editor, on 021 853 0211, or email adean@helderberg.com or tasmin.cupido@helderberg.com with your feedback.

The restaurant, situated on the corner of Van Riebeek and Wesley streets where the Alex Garden Restaurant used to be, sold more than 350kg of chicken in their opening week. Woestyn says he wanted to create a relaxed, quiet, informal and inexpensiverestaurantandbarwhereyou could take your wife. “I want to put real soul food on a plate, but at the same time maintain high standards and offer customers freshness, quality and good service at an affordable rate,” he says. Woestyn, who hails from Belgium, said his family was involved in the restaurant industry there for many years. He explained that the idea of cooking chickens on the rotisserie came from visiting village markets in Europe, where these chickens were

sold to take home. Although there is currently only rotisserie and three speciality chicken dishes available, they plan to have three cuts of beef available soon. Kyle Adendorff, the former manager at Al Forno’s in Gordon’s Bay, is the manager at Chick & Chic. He has been in the restaurant industry for more than 16 years, managing kitchens, bars and the front of the house. Adendorff says when Woestyn explained his idea and concept to him, he immediately loved it and believes it will be a winner among patrons. “We’ve got everything the customers could possibly desire, from the courtyard and kids’ play area to the stylish open plan bar. We cater for everyone, from old to young clientele, as well as those with families. I’m convinced it’ll be a winner and the place to be and the place to see.” The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11:00 to 23:00 and can caterforupto120people.Formoreinformation and bookings phone 021 854 6793.

Cast members, from left, are JoMari Pypers (Anelle), Helen Mor gan (M’lynn), Annelie van Zyl (originally playing Truvy), Roxy Lombard (Shelby), Elizabeth James (Clairee) and Trish Lombard (Ousier).

Local ‘Steel Magnolias’ The Hottentots Holland Drama Society presents Steel Magnolias at The Playhouse in Somerset West in February. The 1989 American comedydrama is the film adaptation of Robert Harling’s 1987 play of the same name, about the bond a group of women share surrounding the family experience during the death of the playwright’s sister, Susan Harling Robinson in 1985. Shelby’s wedding day nears, so the beauty shop women of Chinquapin Parrish, Louisiana – delicate as magnolias but tough as steel – have a lot to talk about. Award winning actresses

Roxy Lombard (Shelby), Samantha Taylor (Truvy), Trish Lombard (Ousier) and Elizabeth James (Clairee) are joined by newcomers Jo-Mari Pypers (Anelle) and Helen Morgan (M’lynn) in this completely local cast. Directed by Darryl Spijkers, it promises to be energised with his flair for the aesthetic and emotionally captivating. Tickets at R80 and R65 for pensioners can be booked through Computicket for the shows performed at 20:00 on 13, 14, 20 February; 14:30 on 15 February; and 18:30 on 21 February. R5 from every ticket goes to The Pebbles Project.

Weekend GIG Guide

Trebuchet Day a fun-filled event Journey’s End wine estate in Sir Lowry’s Pass held their first Trebuchet Day this past Sunday 25 January. It was a fun-filled family event with guests lounging under the trees and enjoying lunch from the available food stalls and spitbraai. A highlight of the day was the piano throwing with the trebuchet and car crash. The event will be held every three months.

Photo right: Willem van Zyl, Søren SchmidtPedersen, Florette Groenewald, Elizma Myburgh, Craig Kirkland, Christél Jacobs, WT Myburgh, and Rob and Mona Burnham loved catching up at the event.

RUBRIEK

Wat gemaak met wisselvalligheid

Freddie Strauss, eienaar van Old World Furniture.

Golly Bresler, eienaar van Strand Juweliers.

Charl Roos, eienaar van Tattoo and Apparel.

Grand old hotel gets a facelift Extensive renovations are planned for The NH Lord Charles this year. NH The Lord Charles Hotel has 198 beautiful guest rooms and houses one of the largest conference venues in the Western Cape. The hotel has hosted guests that include Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu among others, says Jaco du Plooy, sales, marketing and revenue manger for NH Hotels South Africa. The refurbishment project, which will unfold in phases, will focus largely on the lobby area and conference centre of the hotel, but will also include upgrades to 100 guest rooms. These include new beds and the installation of state-of-the-art 42-inch smart televisions in all rooms. The en-suite bathrooms will also receive a makeover. The hotel’s fully equipped conference centre will also undergo a number of improvements. “We are looking forward to the end result of all this work. We have planned the renovations in a way that ensures that the impact on our valued guests will be kept to an absolute minimum during the renovation period. We are confident that these upgrades will greatly enhance their stay at our hotel,” said Serge Foulon, managing director of NH South Africa. The full refurbishment is scheduled for completion by the end of August.

Helderberg Village Masters Homeowner Association NPC recently selected their Employee of the Year for 2014. This coveted title was awarded to Mrs Zelda Steenkamp, Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer.

ESTATE NOTICE

Record likely for eight-year-old Karla

First and Final Liquidation and Distribution Account in the deceased estate of the late EMMARENTIA MARAGRITHA PURVIS (Identity Number: 261020 0082 08 3) who resided at HERITAGE MANOR 95, HERITAGE PARK, SOMERSET WEST Date of death: Estate number:

The recent heavy south-easterly winds have cooled down the water along our shoreline to around 14 degrees, which has not been that conducive to good shore angling.

30 APRIL 2014 22911/2014

In terms of Section 35(5) of Act 66 of 1965 notice is hereby given that copies of the First and Final Liquidation and Distribution Account in the estate specified above will be open for the inspection by all persons with an interest therein, for a period of 21 days from 21 days from 28 November 2014, at the office of the Master of the High Court, Cape Town and the Magistrate’s Office, Somerset West.

Good news is that the 6,4kg snoek that was boated by eight-year-old Karla Rautmann on a 6kg line during the recent WP Inshore Boating Competition, is a pending women’s Western Province and South African record. Not many snoek catches have been reported of late, except for a few boats that took 20 to 40 snoek per vessel from the Rocky Bank area. The exceptionally low tides experienced over the week was ideal for collecting sinkers and spinners from the reefs. It was also a good time for caring anglers to cut away the lines causing all sorts of problems when they get caught on the rocks Many spinnermen and anglers gather enough sinkers and spinners during these low tides to replenish their stocks. Smallish kob, a few dassie, the odd wildeperd and one leervis was caught during the Gordon’s Bay Rock and Surf Angling Club’s competition on Saturday. Johan Niemand won the competition with three kob, with a total weight of 6,8kg. Second was Ferdi Joubert also with three kob and a total weight of 5.25kg, while Hugo Krynauw was in third place with a leerfish of 4kg. In fourth place was Jeremy Kotze with a kob of 3,5kg. Seven of the 11 kob which were weighedin were caught at Pearly Beach. The leerie was caught from Blinkwater reef in the Strand. The only other significant catches during the weekend were an 8kg white steenbras landed by Floyd Robinson from Dawidskraal, some size kob from Macassar Beach and a 6kg kob caught from the Strandfontein pool wall by Jaco Viljoen.

Should no objection thereto be lodged with the Master concerned during the specified period, the Executor will proceed to make payments in accordance with the account. J H VAN ZYL

FISH ’N CHIRPS

Art Ridgway

Dismal catches of just-size kob and the odd white stump and elf were reported by various anglers fishing from small boats and kayaks. No yellowtail were caught from the Cape Point area over the weekend. Plenty of nice size mackerel were caught in Simon’s Town over the weekend, which could signify a possible bumper season. There were also reports of a few goodsize chokka taken at Smitswinkel Bay. The boats which ventured to the Canyon had mixed fortunes: some had between four and five yellowfin tunny and one or two longfin tuna. Patrick Christodoulou, skippering Magoofta, caught nine yellowfin tuna. Ironically quite a few boats could not locate any fish and returned to shore empty-handed. Earl Fenwick reported good catches of yellowtail at the five mile bank at Struisbaai during the weekend. The elusive shoals of geelbek in False Bay were found in the Betty’s Bay area by brothers Wilhelm and Ronald Stoltz, fishing in a dingy. They managed to boat their full quotas in the 5kg class last Friday evening. Boat and shore anglers should remember that geelbek are often found in Hangklip and Betty’s Bay among the kelp at this time of the year. It is also a good time to start spinning for yellowtail passing along the mountain side between Gordon’s Bay to RooiEls. Don’t forget to get your reel serviced and repaired. I service all makes of

SWCC victorious in local derby Somerset West Cricket Club’s first team wrapped up their two-day match against Macassar CC, played at Maccassar on Saturday, with a 52-run victory. SWCC resumed their second innings on 42/2 with a 64-run lead and eight wickets in-hand. The pitch was full of demons and, with constant pressure from the Macassar bowlers, only Dani Seha (26) and Francois Killian (23) managed a semi-decent score before SWCC were bowled out for 129 runs shortly before lunch. Macassar’s best bowlers in the second innings were R Sinden 4-2-12, S. Swartland 14-2-30 and J Fortuin 23-2-36. This left the home side with a target of 151 for victory. The SWCC bowlers also utilised the difficult pitch conditions well and Macassar

were bowled out for 98 runs. Killian was the pick of the bowlers with excellent figures of 15-6-42. He was well supported by Dean Vincent with 9-3-25. The best batsmen for Macassar were J Fortuin (17), and S Jantjies (16). The next fixture for Macassar is against Brooklyn Telkom in Milnerton on 17 January and 7 February. Meanwhile, Macassar beat Delft by six wickets in their one-day match played at the Macassar Sports Ground on Sunday. Macassar won the toss and fielded first, managing to bowl Delft out for 82 runs in 29 overs. The best bowlers for Macassar were K Adams 2-7 and W Hendricks 3-21. Macassar passed the score in the 25th over with C van Graan (35), K Kuiler (3*), A Hendricks (14) and F Delis (7*) getting runs.

SWCC juniors start season on high The SWCC second team were beaten by Kuils River by an innings and 11 runs in their two-day game played at Radloff Park. SWCC continued the match on Saturday, still requiring 127 runs to make Kuils River bat again. They were bowled out for 171 runs with Maurice Olivier (58) the only batsman offering any resistance. SWCC 4th team were beaten by 100 runs by Sir Lowry’s Pass in their one-day away match on Saturday. The home side won the toss, batted first and were all out for 147. Wouter Morgan, Bradley Boyd and Ryno Venter took two wickets each. SWCC were bowled out for 47 runs. The 2015 WPCA junior youth season kicked off on Saturday, with SWCC sides playing in six matches – winning four, drawing one and losing one. The u.10s played WPCC at home and lost by 11 runs. SWCC batted first posting 118/8

in 25 overs. WPCC scored 129/8. The u.11 Vipers played Victoria away and scored a 41-run win. The home side batted first and scored 76/4 in 25 overs. The Vipers then scored 117 runs. The u.11 Mambas beat Mitchell’s Plain by eight wickets at Radloff Park on Saturday. The visitors batted first and scored 61/8 in their 20 overs. Curt Vlaandorp led the charge with three wickets. The Mamba batsmen passed the target in the 10th over. The u.12 Falcons played Durbanville at home in a timed match which ended in a draw. The Falcons batted first and scored 143 runs. Durbanville were on 109/9 when time ran out. Armand Burger and Grant Swanepoel took two wickets apiece. The u.12 Eagles travelled to Durbanville for a timed match which they won by six wickets. The SWCC u.13 team cruised to a 66-run win over Green Point at Radloff Park.

Crunch time for Another decisive Helderberg CC victory for HHCC Northerns Goodwood beat Helderberg by nine wickets in their two-day match played at the Helderzicht Sports Grounds on Saturday.

Helderberg scored 102 in their first innings with only Grant Moss, Leneal Treziers (19 runs each) and Larry Morkel (18) making useful contributions. Helderberg bowled the visitors out for 164. Christo Southey 18-4-36, Cody Davids 10-2-17 and Larry Morkel 9-226 were the best of the bowlers. Helderberg resumed their second innings on 25/0 with a deficit of 39 runs. They started well, but good bowling from the visitors saw Leneal Treziers lose his wicket in the fifth over of the day.

Hottentots Holland Cricket Club’s (HHCC) first team scored a comprehensive innings and nine-run win over Nyanga in their First Division D two-day match on Saturday. Nyanga scored 47 runs in their first innings, to which HHCC replied with 211/3. When the match resumed on Saturday Nyanga were on 99/4 in their second innings. They were bowled out for 155 a short while later, adding only 56 runs to their overnight total. The top bowlers were: G. Moller 10-2-18, A. Temoor 13-2-32 and W. Martin 9-3-26. The HHCC second team beat Milnerton by seven wickets in their away match. Milnerton batted first and were all out for 70 in 22.5 overs. Z. Salie 10-5-10, B. Achmat 5-2-11 and R. Mathews 6-2-26 were the pick of the bowlers. The best batsmen were E. Aziz (28) and U. Sha (13). The Rondebosch third team beat their HHCC counterparts by six wickets in their one-day fixture. HHCC batted first and scored 165/8 in 35 overs. The top HHCC batsmen were E. Wyngaard (32) and K. Ajam (32). Rondebosch passed the target in 32.3 overs. With figures of 7-1-26, A. Arnold was HHCC’s best bowler.

Helderberg had to score 250 or bat out the day to get a positive result, but unfortunately poor shot selection from the batsmen made it impossible for them to achieve any of their goals on the day. The home team found themselves six wickets down before lunch and were eventually bowled out for a paltry 115 just after lunch – a lead of just 55 runs. The only batsmen who made a significant contribution were Larry Morkel (25) and Grant Moss (18). Northerns Goodwood passed the target with only one wicket down. Helderberg now face log leaders Milnerton at home on Saturday and will have to pull out all the stops to win this match if they are to compete for promotion to First Division A.

Sevens rugby is the winner The Sevens tournament hosted by Strand Pioneers Sports Club at Gustrouw on Saturday was a roaring success and exceeded all expectations. So said a beaming Faiz Davids, spokesperson for the club, on completion of the event. “This was the third year we have held this tournament and we are ecstatic and proud to have heard it labelled, by those in attendance, as our best ever,” Davids said. Young Peoples (Paarl) beat Maties 33-31 in the last move of the game in the nail-biting, exciting final. Maties played St. George’s in the one semi-final and Macassar (1) played Young Peoples in the other. Other participating teams were: Strand United; Kuils River; Helderberg (1&2); Whistling Wheels (1&2); Strand Pioneers (1&2), Strand (1&2), Macassar RFC (1&2) and Living Legends. Strand Pioneers Sports Club would like to express their sincere thanks and grati-

tude to Cinnamon Spar for partnering with them in this venture. They also thanked various businesses who helped, including Ultimart Supersave and Wyeth Taxis. Davids however, pointed out that there were unfortunately logistical complications that the club experienced as a result of a lack of perimeter fencing in some places, as well as the inadequate electrical connections at the field and the inadequate amenities, ultimately putting a bit of a damper on the occasion. Davids said the club will be appealing to the City of Cape Town to invest in providing better facilities at the venue to cater for this event, which is growing every year. Strand Pioneers also thanked the participating teams, players, referees, coaches, medics and physiotherapists, as well as the spectators whose presence contributed to make the day a resounding success. The club is also planning to host an u.19 and u.13 sevens tournament at the same venue over the Easter weekend.
