Haar man het vinnig besef daar is groot fout toe hy haar hoor gil.

Men sentenced for terrorising motorists DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Several arrests in Lwandle Three illegal shebeens in Lwandle were issued a fine of R1 500 each this past weekend. Police also confiscated 377 litres of alcohol from these shebeens. Nine more suspects (aged 23 - 38) were arrested for possession of dagga during stop and search operations while two other suspects (aged 29 and 30) were arrested for drunk driving.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN?: The Somerset West Police are seeking the assistance of the public in tracking down this man, known as Viviano Hartnick. It is believed that Hartnick, who is from Macassar but currently living on Somerset West streets, can assist the police with their investigation of three cases. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Hartnick is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Yolandi Africa on 021 850 1310.

Alfonso Isaacs (alias Nokkies) and Desmond Leyman (alias Oorlog), who terrorised motorists on the N2 for months, were sentenced in the Stellenbosch Regional Court last Friday, 14 November. Isaacs (29) was found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment. Both men were arrested at the end of June 2012 and Isaacs has been in custody since then. Leyman (31) was sentenced to nine years imprisonment. Leyman is currently serving an eight-year sentence for a similar crime, of which three years have been suspended. The nine-year sentence will be

served concurrently with this sentence. The men are believed to have been part of a bigger group whose crime spree spanned from January to June 2012. The determination by the investigating officers, Detective Warrant Officer James Jansen and Detective Constable Norman Ngenelo, led to the arrest of Isaacs and Leyman at the end of June that year. The robbers obstructed the road with bricks at various points between the Macassar bridge and the Baden Powell Road off-ramp, and robbed motorists of laptops, handbags, cash and cellphones when they stopped to inspect the damage to their vehicles. During the five months, 21 robberies, a few of which included assaults, were reported to the Macassar Police. Isaacs and Leyman were positively linked to a handful of these cases.

Man shot, bread truck robbed in Macassar DELIAH BRINKHUIS A Macassar man survived a shooting incident during an armed robbery in Macassar on Tuesday this week. According to Sergeant Chrisy Lewaks, the incident occurred outside a bread distributing company in Musica Avenue, opposite the Macassar High School, just before 12:00. Two men in a light blue Toyota Corolla had stopped in front of the business when one of the men, wielding a firearm, approached two employees in a truck. He allegedly pointed the gun at the employee in the front cabin of the truck and demanded money. The em-

ployee said that he had no money and that the driver was inside. The robber took the man’s cellphone and forced the other employee, who was in the back of the truck, into the cabin with him and allegedly ordered them to sit with their hands folded across their chests. Lewaks said a man who was walking past the truck then asked the robber for bread. The robber was, however, waiting for the driver to come back from the house and tried to force the beggar into the back of the truck. He resisted and was shot in the stomach. The injured man fled the scene and ran into a garden in Showboat Street, behind Musica Ave-

The second suspect joins him and helps his partner grab the mountain bike.

15 years for Sir Lowry’s cycle robbers JAMEY GORDON Two of three men who were accused of robbing a Gordon’s Bay resident of his personal possessions while he was cycling in Sir Lowry’s Pass earlier this year were sentenced in the Somerset West Regional Court. Gerswin Mitchell (22) and Thabo Mamba (20) from Rastakamp, Sir Lowry’s Pass were found guilty on a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances. Mitchell was also found guilty of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The case against the third accused, Ashley Makundai (22), was withdrawn. The men were each sentenced to 15 years

imprisonment, of which four years were suspended for five year. This means that they will serve 11 years in prison, and should either of them commit a similar offence during the suspension period of five years, an application can be submitted for them to receive the further four years imprisonment. Mitchell received an additional three years’ imprisonment for the possession of an unlicensed firearm. DistrictMail previously reported that the young men were arrested by the Somerset West Police after robbing Malcolm Fox of his personal possessions while he was cycling in the Sir Lowry’s Pass area on Saturday 31 May. The incident occurred at 12:20 when three men held Fox at gunpoint

and robbed him of his mountain bike valued at R12 000, cellphone, car keys and Oakley sunglasses. The entire incident was captured on his GoPro – a high definition camera – which led to the men’s arrest. The men made their first court appearance on 3 June. Emma Fox, the wife of the victim, says she and her husband are elated and relieved that the men were caught, found guilty and received such a “good” sentence. Colonel Mary-Ann Williams, Somerset West Police Station commander, commends the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Carleigh Noemdo, for the outstanding manner in which he conducted the investigation.

Macassar rou ná dood van matrikulant DELIAH BRINKHUIS

CAUGHT RED-HANDED: Disciplinary action has been taken against a driver of a municipal truck who was seen towing a car last Tuesday. The incident was photographed by a Strand resident at about 11:40 in Tenth Street, Strand. Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services at the City of Cape Town said the driver and crew were identified and that they will be disciplined. Sonnenberg thanked the reader for reporting this misuse of government property, and said incidents such as these can be reported to the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089.

Man killed by train in Somerset West A man was hit and killed by a train close to Van der Stel Station on Saturday 15 November. It was reported that a 41-year-old man was hit by a train at about 18:15. He died on the scene. Col. Andrè Traut, provincial police spokesperson, said police are investigating the possibility that the man took his own life. Police have opened an inquest docket. According to a Metrorail spokesperson, the incident took place between Somerset West and the Van der Stel Station. Busses were supplied to passengers while the line was closed.

Somerset Mall will be the destination of the Somerset West Burger King outlet, opening in mid-December. The store will be stocked to sell 2 500 burgers on its opening day.

Burger King Whopper comes to the Helderberg The world-famous Burger King’s Whopper will be available in the Helderberg in December. Jaye Sinclair, CEO of Burger King South Africa, says the store will open in the Somerset Mall in mid-December, when their most popular product, the Whopper, will be available to hordes of customers. The store will be located in the food court, next to the cinema. The new store will be stocked with about 2 500 buns and patties on its opening day. When asked how the brand plans to cope with the massive number of customers that flock to Somerset Mall in the December period, Sinclair said: “Part of

our planning for each store is to ensure that we meet demands. This includes accommodating increased levels of shoppers during a busy festive season. Burger King South Africa has made provisions on a needs basis to ensure that we do not run out of stock.” Since the American brand touched down on South African soil last year, the top performing franchise has been in Sandton in Gauteng. The first South African franchise is on the Foreshore in Cape Town. Sinclair says that their next step after Somerset Mall is to open 100 stores by June 2015 in the Western Cape, Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal.

SLP river ‘not safe’ for swimming DALEEN FOUCHÉ The Sir Lowry’s Pass River is not safe for swimming due to the high level of faecal coliforms (e-coli) and other pollutants in the river. Local ward councillor, Johan Middleton, warned this week that children should not be swimming in the river, because some residents of the Sir Lowry’s Pass informal settlement empty their portable flush toilets (PFT) into the river. PFTs consist of a small portable seating structure and two removable bowls. These are cleaned three times a week by the City of Cape Town. A recent test of the Sir Lowry’s Pass River’s water quality, taken by a Somerset West resident, revealed a high e-coli count in this river. The City of Cape Town, however, would not comment on test results, because the test was not conducted by the City. Five water samples were taken from various places in the Sir Lowry’s Pass River by Stephen Leppan, a local activist, in September and sent to South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). He says he had the water samples tested because he saw how people emptied their PFT pots into the river. Leppan added that when he confronted the people, they said that they do not have enough PFTs and they fill up before the City can collect and clean them. The results show that the e-coli count at the Sir Lowry’s Pass Informal Settlement was 1 250 e-coli per 100 mF. The accepted level for water that people have “intermediate contact” with, exclu-

ding swimming, is 1 000 e-coli per 100 mF. Benedicta van Minnen, mayoral committee member for Health in the City of Cape Town, says she cannot comment on the test results as these were not analysed in the City’s laboratory and it is unclear how the samples were taken, stored and transported. She says it is also not clear whether the samples were analysed within the specified six hours from the time they were collected. Van Minnen says a single sample does not provide adequate information to draw specific conclusions from and the protocol for testing water requires several samples over a three month period to be compared. She says the City of Cape Town has all its tests done at its own laboratory. Middleton says the people using the river to empty their PFTs is a big problem which the City of Cape Town has addressed repeatedly through education campaigns. He says in addition to the PFTs, residents also have access to several flush toilets positioned across the informal settlement. Van Minnen, however, says additional full flush toilets will be installed in various informal settlements such as Wag ’n Bietjie and Beverly Hills in Sir Lowry’s Pass this year. “In addition, City Health in the past financial year and up until now held ten health interventions at Rasta Camp, crèches in the surrounding area and the primary school, focusing on diarrhoea prevention, personal hygiene, grey water, and illegal dumping.” Middleton says the river is also dangerous to children due to bottles and other rubbish being dumped in the river.

Rates increases not on municipal database With reference to the DistrictMail’s recent notice on rates increases and not having received any postage from the municipality (not necessarily a sign of a rates increase), I went to the Strand municipal offices and was assisted by a very competent and efficient young lady in searching the two large files containing the citywide rates increases. Time spent, 30 minutes. Conclusion: whoever managed/programmed the compilation and way the files were put together did it in the most time efficient way. Problem being, they did not consider the most efficient way for staff using the printed information, resulting in the thousands of wasted man hours by municipal staff across the peninsula. Poor indexing of reference numbers and names, giving the impression that it had been “thrown together”. The information was not available in the municipal database.

Gordon’s Bay water pressure problems due to vandalism Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but this has got to be done. I live in Disa Road, Gordon’s Bay and for the last three to four weeks have had terrible water pressure. But since Dennehoff Road has now finally been completed, every morning the water gets cut for some or other reason. The water sometimes stays off almost the whole day and things like drinking water, cooking water and a small matter of washing clothes come to a grinding halt. This as a pensioner is not funny. As if we don’t have enough problems without having to deal with this as well. Please could you find out what is going on and get someone to fix it properly for once and for all. If this happened in an area where councillors stayed I bet this would have been sorted in no time. But we

Response from the City of Cape Town: On 6 and 7 November one of the City’s service providers did pressure tests in Gordon’s Bay and had to turn the water supply off. This was a planned interruption and residents were informed of it via the local media. Areas fed by the Mountainside and Mariners Way pressure reduction valves were affected. On 8 November the Strand Water Depot received numerous calls from residents in Gordon’s Bay regarding low water pressure. On investigation it was found that two valves on the corner of Lemoenboom Road and Lancaster Road, Gordon’s Bay, had been vandalised. The valves

were both in a partially closed position, and the heads of the valves had been broken off. Repairs were effected and water supply was restored by 9 November at about 14:00. Supply was again interrupted on 14 November at about 08:00 due to a damaged water pipe. Water supply was restored at 14:00 on the same day. Water supply to Gordon’s Bay is currently operating as normal. Should further interruptions occur, residents should please report this to the City’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089, via SMS to 31373 or via e-mail to watertoc@capetown.gov.za. The City apologises for the inconvenience caused, and would like to again appeal to residents to report incidents of vandalism, which cost the City and the ratepayer large amounts of time and money each year.

Hats off to Somerset West police Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch was pleased to see the recognition given to Somerset West police with their recent award for crime prevention and detection. Given the wave of armed robberies that has affected our community, it took significant work to turn the situation around. It should perhaps also be recognised that the award reflects the tremendous community effort put in to support the police, without which such results would not have been possible. The Community Security Partnership which comprises ADT, AM Security, Gordon’s Bay Security, Secure Rite Security and Neighbourhood Watch were pleased to contribute to the overall picture with a significant number of arrests for various offences during the month in the Somerset West area.

WAAR LOOP MENS? FOTO: PETRUS PIETERSE

Thanks, Mediclinic Bad news travels fast and seems to linger on. And, good news is soon forgotten. For this reason I wish to put in writing the good experience I recently had at Mediclinic Vergelegen when I had an emergency admission at 04:00 one morning. From the moment I entered the emergency rooms my experience was five star. The admission officer was pleasant and completely efficient. The casualty officer obviously had a wealth of experience and confidently applied the necessary emergency treatment. I was off to the ward within the hour and warmly welcomed by helpful and willing staff. They arranged to put me on a theatre list. I was seen early that morning by the specialist and anaesthetist. Various tests were requested and concluded before I went to theatre at 11:00. Once again everyone was compassionate and caring. The procedure was a success and I was discharged three days later. I was extremely well nursed back to strength whilst in the ward. The nursing staff were excellent. The whole experience made me feel proudly South African and I thought it deserved a mention. Thank you to Mediclinic Vergelegen.

In ons straat is daar ’n man wat ’n onwettige skrootwerf bedryf.

ONGELUKKIGE STRAND-INWONER

Inwoners kan onwettige aktiwiteite by die Stad se wetstoepassing by 021 596 1999 of die polisie aanmeld.

Applying these tips could ensure a safer season With the holiday season rapidly approaching, the South African Police Services has warned the public to be extra careful and aware of their safety and security around the home as this is also the time of the year when robberies and burglaries occur more frequently. The following are just some of the safety tips highlighted on the SAPS website www.saps.gov.za. ) Security gates with sturdy locks in front of each outer door as well as burglar proofing covering all windows, are recommended. ) The following devices also prevent easy access and are advised: window bars, security doors, security gates and razor wire. ) Additional locking devices on doors as well as the strengthening of doors, peepholes in doors, safety chains to doors as well as an intercom system between the home and gate, front door or garage are also a good idea. ) Alarm, systems such as those connected to an armed response company are recommended. These should include an alarm on the roof that can be heard over a long distance and activated by a panic button in the house. ) Panic buttons in different rooms of the house should also be installed and an alarm should also be able to warn occupants of an intrusion in the house. ) Security lights on the outside of the house also help improve the physical protection of a house. These lights must be di-

rected away from the house and allow occupants to use the windows without being observed from outside. ) Doors should be locked and windows closed when you are not at home. ) Large dogs serve as a deterrent so train at least one of them to sleep inside the house. ) Ensure that tools such as axes, spades, picks, ladders, etc. that can be used to break in or used in an attack, are locked away when you do not use them. ) Always keep a torch nearby at night and when you do use it, ensure you do not give away your position. ) If you are unsure about the security status of your home after returning home (eg your dogs do not come to the gate), do not enter your home. ) Identify safe places of refuge, ie: bathroom, toilet or storeroom. The fewer windows and doors these rooms have, the better. ) Immediately report suspicious behaviour to the South African Police Service. ) Clear the areas around the gates of bushes and other possible hiding places. ) Ensure that you have a good relationship with your neighbours so that you will be in a good position to support and help each other if needed. ) Identify keys by means of codes instead of writing on labels to which gate or door access can be gained. ) Never hide any keys in traditional places, such as in pot plants or under doormats. Keys in the keyhole on the inside of the front or back door should be turned to avoid easy

removal. ) Change locks when keys are lost and insert barring devices in door locks and remove keys from doors when leaving. Inform your children not to give an indication that adult supervision is not available when they answer the phone. Call Crimestop: 08600 10111 or 10111 in case of an emergency.

Almal is welkom.

Judging will take place during the morning and the show will be open to the public from 12:00 to 15:00. The church hall is in Gordon Road, with the entrance in Plein Street. On Saturday the 15th, we commemorated the first anniversary of the devastating flood that brought our practice to its knees in November 2013. During that particular night the Lourens River broke its banks and it resulted in our Somerset West practice being completely destroyed. We lost all our imaging equipment, computers, cabling, server, dedicated software and telephone system. One year later we are proud to announce that we have succeeded in re-building our practice from scratch. All our imaging equipment had to be replaced in the process and we are now again offering a state of the art service to the community. We are grateful to our patients, referring doctors and Medi Clinic for their understanding and support during this difficult

period and we would like to make special mention of our staff because none of this would have been possible without them. In the immediate aftermath they were not discouraged by the massive disruption, but reported promptly for duty and jumped in and assisted where they could whether it was cleaning up, sorting or making inventories. The staff, regardless of their job titles, offered to do paperwork for weeks on end at different locations and many of them worked long hours especially at other practices e.g. Stellenbosch. This enabled us to continue with rendering a service to our patients even while functioning without our main practice. It took us nearly 4 (four) months to become fully operational again and we are very proud of what we have achieved. When we look back we realize that this disaster brought us closer together and made us stronger.

RUBRIEK

VISIT BY CONSUL GENERAL: The Consul General of the Netherlands, Bonnie Horbach, recently visited the Lord Charles Ladies Club. Seen here with her are (from left) Jenny Lewis (club member), Marianna de Villiers (chairperson), Serge Fourlon (managing director of NH The Lord Charles Hotel), Bonnie Horbach and Trucia O’Grady (club member).

EberVet Community Veterinary Care (EVCVC) recently held a charity sterilisation campaign in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Local veterinarian Dr Hilldidge Beer says very few pet owners know that breast cancer can also affect their dogs and cats. Beer says the incidence of breast cancer in dogs is one in four female dogs and in cats almost 50%for females. Half of these cancers in dogs are malignant, which means they can

spread to the rest of the body; 85% of cancers in cats are malignant. Beer adds that breast cancer in pets can be prevented and possibly be eliminated completely if the animal is sterilised before its first heat. The first 30 pets to be sterilised at the Country Animal Clinic were those rescued by the Fallen Angels organisation in Table View. “We are happy to have prevented breast cancer in these animals,” said Beer.

Signs of a good elf season abound The tables were turned between angler and seal this weekend when Jan Louw managed to extract a large kob from the clutches of a seal at Harbour Island on Saturday. Jan noticed there were large shoals of harders (mullet) near his boat’s mooring in Harbour Island and while catching a few for bait he saw a seal next to his boat struggling to subdue a large fish. He quickly grabbed the gaff on his boat and gaffed the fish which turned out to be an 11 kg kob. The kob had been grabbed by the throat and very little damage had been done to it by the seal. Riaan Steyn reported that very few fish were caught in the shore angling competition held by Pearly Beach Club on Saturday. He said 55 anglers took part and only five

Helderberg shore angler Ashraf Pylman with the 7,86 kg kob (970 cm) which he caught from the harbour wall at Harbour Island on Saturday.

anglers managed to weigh in fish. Jacques Viviers won the competition with four kob. Second was Hans Strydom with one white steenbras and one hottentot and third was Wikkie van Dyk with three kob. Most of the fish were caught from “Die Eiland” and “Die Gruis”. Stomp se baai at Uilenkraalsmond delivered quite a number of galjoen which had to be released as the galjoen season is now closed. During the Pearly Beach Angling Club meeting held on Saturday evening Philip Fourie was chosen as club captain for 2015. The rain and swells up to five metres were not conducive for deep sea boat angling this past weekend. The inclement weather and rough water (langbeen water) also restricted shore and boat angling along our section of False Bay. One angler did however manage to catch a reasonable size galjoen on Melk Bay beach, which he returned to the sea. On Saturday Gordon’s Bay angler Henry August, fishing on Strandfontein beach “the fridge”, saw only three anglers at the venue and only one kob of 14 kg was landed. He mentioned this spot is usually crowded, but the coarse sea and sporting events on TV seemed to have kept anglers at home. Besides having a good start to the Summer kob season there are also good signs of plenty of birds working on small bait fish off the reefs in the Strand. These are indications that there could be a good elf season for a change, that is if the trek netters in False Bay don’t wipe out complete shoals of elf of all sizes and other species. Fishing clubs and individuals should keep lobbying against trek netting in False Bay. Good news for professional and weekend boat anglers is that the snoek came around from Groen Duine into Buffel’s Bay on Saturday. Only two commercial boats who braved the conditions managed to boat ±50 fish. For all your reel repairs and services contact Art on 021 854 3831. Local tennis stars shine in Boland Mini Series

Helderberg impress to beat Yorkshire by seven wickets Helderberg won their First Division B away match against Yorkshire last weekend by seven wickets. The weather put a dampener on the first day and play only started at 14:00. Captain Vincent Castle lost the toss and was asked to bat first. The innings got off to a shaky start when opener Gary-John Sylvester (4) lost his wicket early on. Vincent Castle (28) and Leneal Treziers (44) steadied the ship and batted responsibly, with Treziers never giving any indication that there was a problem with the pitch. Helderberg ended their innings on 135/10 with Yorkshire having to bat seven overs before the end of the day. The Helderberg bowlers took advantage of the conditions and Christo Southey struck with the first ball of the innings. Cody

Davids added insult to injury, claiming a wicket with the first ball of the second over. Yorkshire lost two more wickets and were on 10/4 at the close of play on day one. Play resumed 30 minutes earlier on Sunday due to time lost on day one. Helderberg were determined to finish Yorkshire off quickly and did just that when Southey (10-5-13) and Castle (7-4-2) took the remaining six wickets and bowled Yorkshire out for just 18 runs. Yorkshire followed-on with a deficit of 117. Their batsmen did not give up without a fight and made Helderberg field for 83 overs before they were bowled out for 158 and with a lead of only 41 runs. Helderberg lost three wickets in the chase to win the game. Gary-John Sylvester (15) and Junaid Sylvester (16*) were the best batsmen for Helderberg.

Hottentots Holland Cricket Club look set for another convincing win Hottentots Holland Cricket Club’s first team appear to be a commanding position in their match against Kensington, which resumes this Saturday. The match could only start after 14:00 due to the heavy rain on Friday night and was reduced to 40 first-innings overs. Hottentots Holland batted first and scored 230/3 in their 40 overs. The top scoring batsmen were A Temoor (92*), R Rhoda (52*), R van Reenen (49) and E Pedro (28). Kensington were no match for the Hotten-

Wet pitches make the going tough at Radloff Park Heavy rainfall on Friday night dramatically affected matches played at Radloff Park on Saturday morning. The match between the Somerset West first team and Mannenberg only started at 14:00 and players found conditions tough when play eventually did resume. To make matters worse SWCC lost the toss and were sent in to bat first. The openers found the damp pitch difficult to play and both batsmen

were out cheaply. Daniel Seha and Stephan Southey then combined to stabilise the innings for the home team before a middle order collapse saw Somerset West at 41/5. David Killian (21) then joined Stephan Southey at the crease for a 59run partnership. This was followed by a seventh wicket partnership of 34 runs between Southey and Michael Osborn and a ninth-wicket partnership of 45 runs between Southey and Dean

Vincent. Stephan Southey (94) was the last wicket to fall and SWCC were all out for 183. Manenberg were on 20/1 after 15 overs at stumps on day one. Bishop Lavis found conditions on the SWCC B field unplayable and were all out for 12 in their match against the SWCC second team. This match also had a late start due to the wet conditions. SWCC won the toss and put the visitors in to bat. Pierre-Henry Hurn was the destroyer in chief returning figures of 5-0-5-11. SWCC also found the going tough immediately losing two wickets. Skipper Sergio Hilario (38 *) assisted by Morne Marais and Christiaan Jooste stabilised the innings to end on 120/4 at the close of play. The rain accounted for the SWCC third-team match as well as the majority of the junior matches not being played with only two junior sides taking to the field. The u.10 Gremlins travelled to Durbanville where they faced a formidable Durbanville side. The homeside scored 215 runs in 30 overs. Simon Odendaal retuned the best bowling figures of 3-0-2-12. The

Macassar vs Gugs match evenly poised The First Division D two-day match between Macassar and Gugulethu, which continues at the Gugulethu sport grounds on Saturday, is evenly poised and could go either way. The game was delayed due to heavy rain and only started at 14:00. Gugulethu won the toss and sent Macassar in to bat and made good use of the bowler-friendly conditions. Macassar lost opening batsman Shaun Jantjies for 10 in the sixth over. However fellow opener E le Roux played well for his 28 and with Alton Roberts (40) took the score to 68/3 in 18 overs. A middle-order collapse then saw Macassar bowled out for 91 in the 26th over. The only other batsman who offered any resistance was captain Neil Swartland (13). The best Gugulethu bowlers were W Nkobane 11-3-32, K Pani 8-6-9 and S Mlakudi 6-1-25. Gugulethu adapted well to the conditions with an opening stand of 40 runs in 10 overs. David Sebastian got the first break through for Macassar dismissing M Xakana for 16. After that wickets fell at regular intervals with Julian Fortuin bowling brilliantly returning figures of 12-5-36.

Gugulethu tried to up the run rate, but were dismissed for 138 in the 40th over with a lead of 47 runs. The best batsmen were X Mdodwa (67), C Kayawa (20) and X Ngumbula (18). The other bowlers among the wickets were Chad Bailey 5-1-12 and Shane Swartland 4-1-17. With five overs left the visitors lost opener Shaun Jantjies (2) with the score on 7/1 at stumps on day one with E le Roux (3*) and Shane Swartland (0*) at the crease. Macassar’s second team won their sixth consecutive match when they beat Helderberg’s second team by three wickets. Macassar won the toss and bowled first and had Helderberg in trouble early with the score on 23/6. Helderberg fought back to post 71/10 in 32 overs. Macassar’s top bowlers were Kenneth Adams with 6-4-17 and Robert Hendricks with 7-4-28. Helderberg’s bowlers made Macassar’s batsmen work for their runs and they lost seven wickets before passing the score in the 26th over with Robin Abrahams top scoring with 26. He was supported by Kenneth Adams (11*) who was also the man of the match.

Steven Southey plays a shot of a batsman in form during his superb innings of 94 runs scored in difficult conditions against Mannenberg at Radloff Park on Saturday. PHOTOS: PETER BEE Gremlins batsmen never got going and were restricted to 98 in their 30 overs with Riley Norton top scoring with 26. The u.10 Goblins faced Blue Bells at home on Saturday and narrowly lost the match by two wickets. The Goblins batted first and were

boosted by a late flurry by Matthew Wilcock who struck 37 off 21 balls to take the total to 138 off 25 overs. The match went down to the wire with Blue Bells sneaking it in the end. Callum Wilson bowled well to record figures of 3-0-3-13.

Attitude is vital component in cricket The beauty about cricket is that any team can beat any other team on any given day. This is actually evident in all sport, but if you don’t pitch up mentally and physically on the day, you will be beaten. Take the Proteas for example. They had a great win against the Aussies in their first T20 and then lost the next two matches. I’m not saying they didn’t pitch up for the remaining games, but it’s conceivable that complacency crept in after their first win. I tell my players that there is no easy game. Each game is as difficult as the next. As soon as you drop your guard and lower your intensity the more chance you have to lose. Always respect the opposition and respect the game. It’s very important to have a positive attitude in cricket. When facing fast bowling in particular, attitude is very important. Stand-

ing your ground and “manning up” will go a long way to achieving success. We have seen many players over the years not fulfilling their potential due to lack of the right attitude. Having never say die and the team comes first attitudes are the one to have. Cricket has a knack of bringing those who don’t respect the game down to earth with a thump. The World Cup is around the corner and South Africa will once again be under the spot light. The Proteas will have to be switched on for every ball of every game if they want to win and there is no reason why they can’t.

Huis Jan Swart skep ware Huis Soeterus bied kwaliteit sorg tuiste vir bejaardes

Daar is altesame 77 inwoners by Huis Soeterus.
