Onderwysers betoog teen onveiligheid

‘KRYSTAL’ TOUCH FOR TOWN

GB in the money DALEEN FOUCHÉ Gordon’s Bay is abuzz over the money that is being poured into converting the old Villa Via Hotel into the multi-million rand Krystal Beach Hotel – and property along the marina is already becoming sought after.

FOTO: TAMSYN JANTJIES

Renovations on the 121-room hotel started early last year and are expected to be completed at the end of April. The hotel was bought by Cameroonian billionaire Samuel Foyou, who made his fortune in trade in Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Major upgrades to plumbing and wiring have been completed, and more than 50% of the rooms have been completed. Work on the lobby and restaurants is now in progress. Krystal Hotels vice-president Dominique Viard believes the hotel will not only bring economic benefits to Gordon’s Bay, but will also impact property value at Harbour Island. “I am not an expert on the South African property market, but I believe the hotel will benefit property prices in the marina.” The marina has 460 properties falling under the Harbour Island Master Homeowners Association, and Carina Thiart, chief operations manager of the association, says that the renovation of the hotel, combined with the fact that the marina was granted a Blue Flag award in October last year, will bring a general rise in prices. “We have regular meetings with the owner’s representative and regular meetings with the project team, who share new ideas and changes with us. There are also mock-up rooms for viewing and they are certainly very nicely done.” Len Wilmot, principal of Homelink Estates in Harbour Island, says proper-

ty prices at Harbour Island have already shown a 10% year-on-year increase, and available properties are rapidly being snapped up. Three years ago there were 75 properties available; now there are 43, he says. Stanley Reed, director of Bertie’s Moorings, a restaurant established in 1994 that has weathered many seasons at Harbour Island, says the renovation of the hotel is good for business at the marina and in Gordon’s Bay. “Previously with the original hotel, we’d find that 40% to 50% of the guests would spill over to restaurants at the marina and in Gordon’s Bay, as they would not all eat at the hotel. This is very good for us as a business, and for Gordon’s Bay.” Di Nosworthy, owner of the Gordon’s Bay Tourist and Accommodation Centre, has no doubt, though, that Gordon’s Bay as a whole will benefit. “It’s the best thing that could have happened to Gordon’s Bay. I get enquiries all the time for a hotel; this is just what we need. I met the vice-president of the company and have seen the video of the proposed new hotel – it is very futuristic thinking and looks stunning. It just raises everything; the type of visitor also changes and we’ll be seeing a different market. Gordon’s Bay was well overdue for growth; we needed this.” Danie Miller, chairperson of the Gordon’s Bay Business Forum, also looks forward to the hotel bringing a new kind of visitor to the town that will support the local economy. Viard says a soft launch is planned for the end of April and locals will have the opportunity to go on a tour of the renovated hotel. Viard confirms that the hotel is currently recruiting staff for the hotel. A total of 70 job opportunities are being created and preference will be given to applicants from Gordon’s Bay and Strand.

Violence erupts

A 28-year-old man appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after he reported a carjacking that, according to the police, never happened. Somerset West police spokesperson Sergeant Suzan Jantjies says the man alleged that he was driving near the corner of the R44 and R102 in Somerset West on Thursday 6 February at 21:20 when a black BMW drove in front of his vehicle. “He said the two occupants of the BMW were armed and forced him to the back of his car,” she says. “He further alleged he was taken to an area in Somerset West, where he was assaulted and robbed of his personal belongings.” The man then reported a case of carjacking at the Somerset West Police Station. “During the investigation, detectives found no evidence that the carjacking occurred,” Jantjies explains. The man was arrested on Monday 9 February on a charge of defeating the ends of justice, appeared in court on 11 February, and remained in custody until his second court appearance on 17 February. The outcome was unknown at the time of going to print.

Nazli Street in Casablanca, Strand, was in chaos after a fire and bloodshed on Monday, when a fight between two groups ensued at 21:00. Five suspects were arrested and will appear in Strand Magistrate’s Court today (Thursday 19 February). Four of the men (19 to 21) were arrested for attempted murder. “One of the men allegedly went to another’s house to collect money owed to him,” says Strand police spokesperson Constable Mbulelo Mafuna. “The fight started and two men, aged 17 and 20, were stabbed.” Mafuna says the other group retaliated and shots were fired, injuring two women (33, 20). Mafuna says two shacks in the street were burnt to the ground at 01:00.” “A 30-year-old man was arrested for arson that may be related to the fight.” Anyone with information can phone Detective Constable Andrew Braaf, on 021 854 9100.

Kwaaddoener bestook winkels met klippe

Copper stolen

Two alleged copper thieves were arrested for the possession of stolen property. Somerset West police spokesperson Sergeant Suzan Jantjies says on 8 February police responded to a community tip-off of copper being burnt in the Sir Lowry’s Pass area “Upon further investigation, Metro Police officers noticed cables being burnt near the railway line.” Two men, in possession of 47 m of copper wire, were arrested and the copper was confiscated” she says. The two suspects appeared in court on 10 February and were released with a warning to be present at court for their next hearing in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court.

JARE LANGE PROBLEEM: ONDERWYSERS LEEF IN SPANNING

Strand-skool deur geweld geteister

DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Court date for boy (11) The 11-year-old boy from Broadlands Village, Strand who is facing a murder charge after his eight-year-old friend was fatally shot last Monday, will appear in court again on Tuesday 24 March. The shooting happened after the two boys and their nineyear-old friend allegedly picked up a gun wrapped in two shopping bags, along Broadlands Road (“Boy (8) killed in gun game”, District-

Mail, 12 February). They took the gun, a 9 mm PX4 – similar to a police firearm – to the home of the 11year-old in Daisy Street. There they allegedly played with the gun in a bedroom and a shot went off, fatally wounding the eight-year-old Grade 2 learner. The 11-year-old boy remains in the custody of his sister, while he and his friend are receiving counselling.

‘Unsustainable’ Cotlands closes DELIAH BRINKHUIS Cotlands, the Somerset West palliative unit for HIV positive children from birth to six years, will close its doors at the end of March. The last 17 children awaiting adoption have to be placed in homes before the centre closes. Seventeen of the 27 employees will be accommodated at the organisation’s Macassar centre. Jackie Schoeman, CEO of Cotlands, says the centre will remain open until the last child has been placed, and that staff will remain on the premises until all outstanding matters have been finalised. Schoeman says keeping the centre’s doors open has become increasingly challenging over the years and that keeping it open is not sustainable, with annual expenses amounting to about R3-million. She says Cotlands serves some 4 000 children, of which about 120 are in its two residential programmes at its Somerset West and Johannesburg units. “Although these programmes only care for a very small percentage of our beneficiaries, it takes about a third of our budget to run these two centres. The community has been extremely generous in supporting our residential children, and we have seldom had to buy food, nappies or clothing. However, these are not the major costs; the main cost is staff salaries. Because it is a 24-hour service, we need four shifts of nurses and childand youth-care workers. In addition we need a cleaner, cook, driver and laundry operator.” The organisation was started on World Aids Day in 2003 and has built up a close working relationship with welfare organisations such as Child Welfare, the ACVV and Badisa, as well as Patch, the Helderberg Centre for child sexual abuse, and other Western Cape organisations.

Cindy Lucas, fundraiser, and Monica Buitendag, manager of Cotlands hope that the organisation will be able to stay open and continue its services.

PHOTO: DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Over the years more than 1 200 children have been assisted through its hospice and with the extended services of a safe house for abused children and babies awaiting adoption. According to Monica Buitendag, manager of Cotlands Somerset West, the organisation changed its focus from residential care to their early childhood programmes in 2011, when this need was identified. This programme was established as an early childhood centre at the Macassar Haven, which was donated to them in 2009. Buitendag says the programme, which is run free of charge, was recently changed to a playgroup to benefit more children and now also includes a toy library. According to Schoeman the need for a hospice for HIV positive babies has diminished with the implementation and success of the anti-retroviral programme. Buitendag says the centre still provided palliative care for older children, many whom were referred by

local clinics. Cotlands also ran a homebased care programme to assist parents with terminally ill children. She says the decision to close the unit was not only made for financial difficulties, but because of the new direction the centre has taken. “We were not ready to give up our residential component entirely, as we were still testing our new model, which has really taken off now,” she says, adding that ECD programmes will soon be launched in the North West and the Free State, bringing the total to seven provinces. “A financial contribution at this stage would not change our decision,” she added. Buitendag hopes that donors will once again come on board and that the centre would be able to continue rendering its services if another organisation took it under its wing. “We do not want to close the centre, but we do not have a choice,” she says. Anyone who can assist the centre can phone Buitendag or fundraiser Cindy Lucas on 021 852 3527.

‘I created my own job’, says ‘disabled’ beggar DALEEN FOUCHÉ “It is all an act.” This is the confession of 26-yearold David Dyarithi, who is regularly seen at the N2 and Victoria Road intersection pretending to be disabled and begging for money. In an interview with the DistrictMail, David admits that he is in no way disabled and only acts this way. When asked why, he said that he is trying to make disabled people aware of the fact that they can still “do something”, besides getting a

grant and staying at home. When pushed on the subject, he confirmed that he views “the act” as his livelihood. “I created my own job. No-one will give me a better income than what I am making now. Where can you find a job in this South Africa?” David says he used to make R1 000 a day, but these days he makes about R200 a day. He believes he is making more money with his act than what other beggars are making with their posters. He explained that he used to brandish strange and innovative posters, but only really started do-

ing well when he started “performing”. And when people get angry with him, David simply obeys. “I humble myself and they will feel ashamed.” David is the proud owner of his own house in Khayelitsha and a Corsa bakkie which he paid for with the money he makes from begging. He has ambitions of being rich and influential so that he can help others in need. David also dreams of becoming an actor, adding that he would like to act for television shows. David’s wife did not always know

how he makes money, but once he explained, she did not object. “I support my family, my wife and child.” His work uniform consists of a DA shirt, worn-out shoes and a torn, blue jacket with the words “DA no. 1 supporter” on the back. He says that “when you go fishing, you must use the right bait”, explaining that the majority of people passing through his intersection are DA supporters and he believes that the outfit wins him more sympathy. “I am also a proud DA member myself.”

Law Enforcement ‘not aware’ of act DALEEN FOUCHÉ A video showing how a beggar’s disability is all just an act drew streams of comment from locals last week. The video was captured by a local resident and was sent to the DistrictMail by a third party, who asked that we share it with our readers. The video shows the beggar stretching his legs before collapsing them to hustle among motorists as a disabled man. The man also sometimes blows a whistle in an attempt to direct traffic and signal cars that the traffic light is green. Opinions are varied. One Facebook remark reads: “Sorry but I find this very funny. He deserves a medal for effort; just makes us never trust another cripple at the traffic lights.” Another user was utterly disgusted: “Our town wants to help people who are suffering. We want to show humanity. But this guy has taken from me and many others. Crazy that he has been ‘in business’ this long and we just let him be. Shame on us.” Councillor Stuart Pringle, chairperson for

Subcouncil 8, says that begging in itself does not contravene any of the City of Cape Town’s bylaws. The Streets and Public Places and Prevention of Noise Pollution Bylaw does, however, provide for Law Enforcement to ask beggars to leave when in a public space and act when an individual is interfering with traffic. Pringle says the Road Traffic Act also does not allow individuals to obstruct traffic, and Law Enforcement hold regular operations at this specific intersection on the basis of these two pieces of legislation. Richard Bosman, the City’s executive director for safety and security, says law enforcement officers are not aware of a man pretending to have a disability. “If this is the case, he would likely be very aware of their presence and keep up his act. They will, now that they are informed, keep a lookout for said individual and take action where necessary.” Bosman says the City is working to address this issue through assisting street people in getting off the streets, and through initiatives like the City’s Give Responsibly campaign.

DELIAH BRINKHUIS The assault case against three tow truck drivers allegedly involved in a public brawl in the upmarket Bizweni suburb three weeks ago has been postponed to Friday 6 March. The owner of En Route Towing and two of his employees made their first court appearance in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after a Somerset West resident laid a charge against them for allegedly assaulting him and his wife on Tuesday 3 February. A fight broke out after several tow trucking companies responded to an accident. The Somerset West resident involved was reportedly very angry and confronted the Toyota Tazz driver who had collided with his Mercedes Benz. Jaco Truter, owner of En Route Towing,

TEIN PIET SMIT

admitted to DistrictMail that he had hit the man in an attempt to calm him down. Truter insists that the Somerset West man was the first one to throw punches and that he had only responded to his assault. The other man, however, maintains that he never hit Truter or any of his employees. In response to allegations that police failed to respond to the accident, Somerset West police spokesperson, Sergeant Suzan Jantjies says three calls were made to 10111, and not directly to the local police station. Jantjies says two members received the complaint from their radio control room, but when they arrived on the scene a traffic officer was already attending to the accident. “When the police members were on the scene everything was okay. They then withdrew to attend to another serious incident in Sir Lowry’s Pass,” says Jantjies.

Met die beoogde opgradering van die seemuur sal die pyp tot agter die seemuur geskuif word om toekomstige stortings te voorkom. Tow-trucker in fist fight In my opinion, tow-truck drivers are worse than taxi drivers. I witnessed a tow-truck driver transgress at least five road regulations in the space of about 200m. I saw on the TV news that Afriforum is claiming damages from the union SAPO for their lack of delivery during the Post Office strike of three months . These strikers seem totally disconnected from reality,. I absolutely do not agree with the claim that they were being “accommodating”. The strike lasted for six months and its aftermath was a go-slow and lack of delivery. Even if the strike had lasted for only three months, the Post Office would have been unable to catch up with the ensuing delays, which are still preventing normal delivery to this day. This amounts to a backlog of about one year in total. We are now receiving mail posted in September – five months late – and are still awaiting important mail from after that date. We, as many others have done, have cancelled our Post Office box, as nothing was delivered up to 31 December. The postal delivery service is an essential service; in the past people sacrificed their lives to deliver the mail, but the way this strike has been handled by management and government is absolutely pathetic! Essential services are not allowed to

strike, so the workers’ action was simply criminal. Why didn’t the government say so and call in the military? This seems to be how our country is run: our president – who should represent all South Africans – despises minorities and favours his fellow connivers. This is totally pathetic! Moreover, he has the nerve to tell the people that Mandela would have supported him in this, which is a gross lie. From the start, Mandela called for a united South Africa. Zuma saying that our electricity outages are not a “crisis” but a “challenge”, shows his total absence of realism! And his “State of the Nation Address” was in the end nothing more than proof of his inability to comprehend the real problems facing South Africa. In Europe, one calls this kind of president a “man who is only capable of watering the flowers on monuments” – someone who is a totally ineffectual, unconcerned public “official”. How is this country ever going to recover?

Make sure your food stays safe during power cuts With Eskom’s announcement and confirmation of possible load shedding for the next three years, South Africans are gearing up to prepare themselves for the dark period. An aspect which is often paired with rolling blackouts is the concern of what could happen to refrigerated foods during power cuts. Eating spoilt or rotten foods could be fatal, so it is cru-

cial that you ensure your food doesn’t perish during load shedding periods. Here are some helpful tips to help you prepare for when load shedding hits the Helderberg: Boil water and keep it in thermos flasks for hot drinks, for when the electricity supply is scheduled to be switched off. Use an insulating cover on teapots, other pots and pans to keep drinks hot, and meals warm.

Prepare meals beforehand in case of power cuts. Buy a small, stand-by bottled LP gas heating ring for essential cooking and to boil water for hot beverages. Keep adequate stocks of essential foods. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. A power outage lasting four hours should not cause food spoilage and a freezer should keep frozen food safe for at least a day. It is a good

idea to have alternative snacks, which do not need refrigeration, available. Most medication requiring refrigeration can be kept in a closed fridge for several hours without spoiling, but check with your doctor or pharmacist to be sure. Fill plastic containers with water – leaving some space inside each container for expansion during freezing – and put in the freezer. This will help keep food cold during a power outage.

Nine pointers to enhance safe exercising and boost fitness KARL VAN LITH Here is some advice on helping you improve the safety, sustainability and the results of your fitness training. ) Technique is everything. Good form will automatically translate to better results. The more aligned you are, the more powerful, efficient and effective you will be. ) Always pay attention to pain. If something hurts, it is your body’s way of saying something is straining and you are at risk of injuring yourself. ) Discomfort, however, is a good thing. When exercising, push yourself to the point of discomfort, but never into pain. Learn to differentiate and make sure your coach knows how to guide you correctly. ) Breathing links it all together. Focusing on correct form, exhale through any exertion you experience. Your inhalation will take care of it-

self. Always try to exhale through your mouth and inhale through your nose. ) Intensity must be taken into consideration for safe progression. If you exercise three to four times per week, practise two to three times at moderate intensity (heart rate at 60% to 80%) and once a week at high intensity (heart rate at 80% plus). You will be pushing your limits. ) Warming up and cooling down

Good form dur ing your fitness training will au tomatically trans late to better re sults. PHOTO:

chemically laden, mass production line foods and eat something real. It affects your emotional state, ability to think and focus with clarity, and above all, provides the building blocks for your future body. ) Stress recovery and release is essential for our health, fitness training and all the challenges we face daily. Practise mindful positive thinking because our perceptions and thinking patterns can either relieve or increase stress more than just about any of the above mentioned factors. Good quality movement is one of the few things in life that is all pros and no cons. Try these pointers and see both the immediate and long-term results for yourself. – Karl van Lith is head instructor and owner of Bodyweight Trainer SA

The band got back together five years ago and were amazed to find that they were still popular drawing a capacity crowds. Everyone wanted to hear their old hits s “Buccaneer” and “Chinese Junkman”. The band has released another al-

bum, Work in Progress, featuring songs written and performed by the original members, Mike and Tully McCullagh, Rupert Mellor and Richard Black. Mike, well-known for musicals such as Sixty Something, Station 70, Milestones to the Millennium and Beatlemania, won the 1978 Songwriter of The Year award for “Buccaneer”. “Chinese Junkman” followed “Buccaneer” to number 1 on Radio 5 charts in 1978. Higher risk does not necessarily guarantee a higher yield

The following is an extract from an article in the most recent Allan Gray Quarterly Commentary, published in December last year, in which the writer addresses the inherent risks of investing in stock markets in an attempt to dampen the irrational exuberance of investors: “Efficient market theory holds that there is a direct relationship between risk and return: the higher the risk associated with an investment, the

greater the return. This is intuitive: when we choose investments that we think are more risky, we naturally expect to be rewarded with higher returns. “Unfortunately, in the real world, this simplified relationship does not exist. We have imperfect information, so we are forced to deal with perceived risk and expected return. And at any level of perceived risk, there is a range of potential outcomes. By definition, this

range widens as the risk increases, making it progressively more challenging to predict outcomes with any certainty. Your actual return could be far higher or far lower than your expectations. “Even with perfect information and analysis, taking on greater risk does not guarantee greater future returns.” – Wanita Isaacs (Allan Gray). I am concerned that investors may have become complacent, as global stock markets, supported by unprecedented central bank policy action, have rebounded from the global financial crisis of 2009. The coordinated manipulation of cash/bond yields (financial re-

pression) to historic low levels have forced risk-averse investors to move out of their comfort zones by taking on more risk assets (equities) simply to achieve the same returns they would have had by investing in traditional riskfree assets of cash/bonds. The obvious concern is that investors are now investing in assets inappropriate to their personal risk appetites. This is all fine and well while you have ultra-low volatility, but what happens when the volatility returns? Notice that I said “when” and not “if.” These investors are likely to pull the plug on their investment strategies, thus crystallising their losses.

Shop Friedman & Cohen online DALEEN FOUCHÉ The Helderberg’s favourite retail store, Friedman & Cohen, is launching an online platform. The online store, www.Fancystore.co.za, will offer a wide variety of household goods and appliances. Grant Goodwin, director of Friedman & Cohen, says Fancystore is not the online version of Friedman & Cohen, but rather a new platform and independent business. He explains that Fancystore does not offer the same array of retail goods as Friedman & Cohen, but rather specialises in homeware, offering goods such as small appliances, decor, outdoor equipment, kitchenware, gifts, bedding and luggage.

The store went live in Beta Phase this month, which means it is not picked up by search engines. Carl Pick, online store manager for Fancystore, says this is a testing phase to sort out all the bugs, before the official launch in March. The goal of this new platform, according to Goodwin, is to make it easier for customers to shop. He explains that many holiday-makers buy from Friedman & Cohen and phone from Windhoek or Gauteng to order similar products. “Options for expansion either involved brick and mortar, or an online platform.” Pick says Fancystore, much like Friedman & Cohen, will be customer-driven. Online shoppers will have the opportunity to make comments

which will inform improvements, while after-sale communication is part of the strategy. “We want to make the shopping experience as personal as possible.” Shopping at the Fancystore will require a credit card at first, but options for electronic fund transfers (EFTs) will be available within about two weeks. Delivery of products will be done through courier services and customers will also have a “click and collect” option, where they buy online but collect the goods at the store. “We are very excited about this product,” says Goodwin, “Although this is a new product, the basis of the business is still retail, our area of expertise.”

I am not trying to discourage investors from taking on more risk, in fact most investors err on the side of being overly cautious. But what I am saying is, make sure the investment risk budget is in line with your personal risk appetite – in other words, your ability to handle volatility – and most importantly, your investment time horizon. Warren Buffet said: “If you don’t know yourself, the stock market is a very expensive place to find out.”

Somerset College win annual T20 The annual Somerset College T20 cricket competition held on Sunday 15 February was this year won by hosts Somerset College, who beat Rondebosch by four wickets in the thrilling final. Yellowfin tunny boated near Fish Hoek Beach and Miller’s Point This time of the year is usually known as the best time of the year for fishing and catches by anglers fishing from the shore and boats – and this week confirmed this. The recent temperature of patches of water at 22°C in False Bay and surrounding areas caused a number of species of bait fish such as maasbankers and mackerel to move closer to our shores. Yellowtail, katonkel and even some yellowfin tuna have been boated near Fish Hoek Beach and Miller’s Point. This is an extremely unusual occurrence. Last Thursday Earl Fenwick and a crew member on Earl’s boat Kiora II, caught nine yellowfin tunny between 35kg and 41kg within a period of three hours. If the south-east wind which picked up on Monday morning does not cool the water too rapidly, the mackerel should keep these tunny closer to the shore. The odd tunny could also possibly be caught from Rooikranz by spinner men. Our local shore anglers are still reporting good catches of leerfish and elf from the Strand beaches. One elf of 2,75kg was caught by Morné Haupt while fishing from Blake’s Beach. Quite a few fly fishermen have also been successful in catching and releasing leerfish from Blake’s Beach and the reefs near Die Poort. Local small craft and kayaks fishing in Die Poort and surroundings areas had their quotas of kob, as well as a few elf during the past week. Great news for deep sea anglers is that a marlin fishing competition will be held from Monday 23 until Saturday 28 February from Struisbaai.

elected to bat, scoring 133/5. In their chase, College came up against some accurate spin bowling and fierce fast bowling to be 39/4 after nine overs. Franco Carstens and William Sendin upped the run rate with a partnership of 52 runs, to get the team close to the target. It was man of the match, Franco Carstens, with a quick-fire 73 off 49 balls, who steered Somerset College past the Rondebosch total with six wickets down.

Last week Jason Jooste, who skippered the boat Tyler in Struisbaai with Gareth Beaumont and a charter crew, last reported going on three trips and being successful in catching and releasing 10 marlin. During a trip last Thursday he caught, photographed and released a 65kg hatchet marlin. This fish is also called a round scaled spearfish. It was the first positively identified marlin of this species known to be caught off Struisbaai on the 45 mile Alfa bank. The fundis who were consulted about this catch confirmed that the fish was positively identified as the hatchet marlin by the distinctive round anal fin and the purple spots along the dorsal fin. There were also reports of yellowtail of up to 42kg caught from the same venue last Thursday. Jason also mentioned good catches of kob and mackerel at De Mond near Struisbaai. There was also a marlin strike recorded only five miles off Struisbaai last week. Jason and Alan du Plessis can be contacted on 021 853 3532 for charters. Good reports of geelbek up to 8kg have been boated in Maasbaai (Hangklip) and also by shore anglers at Betty’s Bay. For all your reel repairs and services phone Art on 021 854 3831. Send your fishing news and photos to bjridgway@telkomsa.net.

Somerset West CC first team outclass Gugulethu no Brooklyn with innings and 67 runs match for rampant HHCC Hottentots Holland Cricket Club beat Gugulethu Cricket Club by an innings an 70 runs in their two-day match, which was finished in just one day, in Gugulethu on Saturday. The hosts batted first and scored 37 all out. The best bowlers for HHCC were G. Moller with 10-2-15, C. Mitchell 10-5-15 and W. Martin 8-3-4. Mitchell (59*), R. Rhoda (23) and E. Pedro (15). Gugs batted again and were bowled out for only 28 runs. The best bowlers for HHCC in the second innings were G. Moller 8-2-8, C Mitchell 6-3-7, A Temoor 4-2-5 and W Martin 3-1-5. The HHCC second team beat Western Province Cricket Club by 20 runs in their one-day match. Crombie (35), A. Arnold (24) and M. Khan (24). The best of the bowlers was Z. Railoun with 7-2-30.

Somerset West beat Brooklyn Telkom by an innings and 67 runs on Saturday, in a match delayed due to a damp pitch caused by overnight rain.

Home team skipper Steven Southey won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat. The Brooklyn Telkom batsmen proved way to impatient, trying to attack at all cost, and were bowled out for a dismal 25 runs in 16 overs. Opening bowler Dean Vincent boasted figures of 7.1-6-8, while Francois Killian carded figures of 8-4-17. SWCC batsmen showed a lot more restraint in their knock of 170/8, for a 145run first innings lead. Skipper Southey (73*) was ably supported by Bobby Londt (34) and Chris Norman (30). Brooklyn Telkom fared marginally better in their second innings and were bowled out for 78 in 21 overs, using only 37 of their allotted 120 overs in this match. Killian again shone with the ball with figures of 8-5-30, while Norman cleaned up the tail with 2.4-3-9. On Sunday, the SWCC first team travelled to Belhar for a two-day match. At stumps on day one, they were reeling on 148/5, still 66 runs behind the home team, with four overs remaining in their first innings. SWCC won the toss and put the home side in to bat. Killian continued his hot streak taking a wicket with his first ball. The Belhar batsmen then settled down and posted a 117-run second wicket partnership. The return of Vincent for a second spell swung the match back in SWCC’s favour and, together with the in form Killian, bowled Belhar out for 214. Vincent returned figures of 12-544 and Killian 14-3-44. Belhar bowled a wide line outside off-stump which made batting tough. Peter Baumeister (45) top scored and Jacques Fourie (32) is still at the crease. The second team are well placed in their match against Victoria at Radloff Park. SWCC batted first on a sticky and difficult wicket, and managed to score 199 all out. Gert Barnard (49) and Clive Andrews (48) top scored.

Somerset West skipper Stephen Southey scored (73*) in the match against Brooklyn Telkom, which they eventually won by an innings and 67 runs at Radloff Park on Saturday.

SWCC then bowled the visitors out for 110 runs to hold a commanding 89-run first innings lead. Riyaaz Fletcher deserves credit for the manner in which he cleaned up the Victoria tail. The third team played Victoria away and won the match by six wickets. SWCC won the toss and put the home side in to bat, bowling them out for 165 runs. Adaan Bosman took 3-23, Andre van Heerden and Juandre Haughton took two wickets each. SWCC knocked the target off in the 30th over. Nick Burke (66*) top scored and Adaan Bosman (32) also batted well. The SWCC junior teams had a perfect record with 10 matches played and 10 matches won. The u/10 Gremlins cruised to a 10-wicket victory over the Bellville u/10 team. Cricket match precariously poised The First Division D cricket match between Macassar and Elsies River/Northlink, which commences at the Macassar Oval on Saturday, is evenly poised and could go either way. Elsies River/Northlink won the toss and elected to bowl first. Macassar lost two early wickets with the score on 24/2 after 10 overs. A. Robert and Q. Bowman managed to put together a 43-run partnership to take the score to 67/2 after 30 overs, when Roberts (23) was run out. Bowman (19) soon followed, playing the ball onto his stumps. Macassar then suffered a major batting collapse, which left them on 98/8 after 42 overs at lunch. Elsies River/Northlink then wrapped up the Macassar innings four overs after lunch, with the score on 119 after 46 overs. The other batsmen who contributed were J. Fortuin (10) and N. Swartland (9). Elsies River/Northlink got their innings off

to a solid start, but the regular fall of wickets and brilliant fielding by Macassar had them struggling on 67/7 after 40 overs at tea time. Macassar continued with some brilliant fielding after tea and had Elsies River/Northlink on 101/9 after 49 overs. With the scores level on 119, the last wicket fell in the 54th over with 15 overs of play left for the day. The pick of the bowlers were J. Fortuin 26-346, N. Swartland 9-1-22, S. Levendal 6-1-7 and R. Sinden 4-1-0. There were also three runouts for Macassar in this spell. Macassar got their second innings off to a disastrous start and lost openers E. le Roux (2) and K. November (10) with the score on 13/2 after only seven overs. A. Roberts (18*) played well and was well supported by night watchman S. Levendal (2*), ending the day on 38/2 after 15 overs.
