The children of Chris Nissan Park were once again treated to a fun-filled day at their annual Christmas party hosted by Church Street Methodist Church in Somerset West. The initiative first came about in 1999 when one of the church’s organisations, 1st Somerset West Girls’ Brigade, decided to host the Christmas party as one of their outreach missions. Since 2008, the church got involved and now share the respon-

sibility which has become a highlighted event on their social calendar. This past Saturday (8 December) was no different than previous years with fun and laughter all the way. The approximate amount of 130 children from ages 4 – 10 were treated to games, sports, arts and crafts, face painting, jumping castles, hamburgers, ice creams and party packets. The day ended on a high note but not before Father Christmas arrived to hand out gifts to all the children. “This is always the highlight each year to see the joy on the faces of the little ones. We are always reminded that although the wall of our church has collapsed, our service continues,” said one of the organisers, Marina Sylvester. The church would like to thank the principal and school governing body of Somerset Primary School who without hesitation agreed to open their facilities for this years function. As well as all the volunteers who put in the time and effort to make the party a memorable one.

Carnival festivities in Bright Street The third annual Bright Street Carnival that took place on Saturday 8 December was once again a great success. Visitors to the carnival were treated to entertainment and activities for the whole family to enjoy. The children had fun decorating their own cupcakes, making jewellery, having their faces painted, riding the mechanical rodeo bull as well as watching the clowns and magicians perform crazy stunts. Visitors were spoiled for choice with the 40 stalls in the market place and many different food stands. The wine route was also quite a hit as various wine estates showcased their finest. The evening’s fun, enjoyable atmosphere was kept at a high with the many live artists and bands who performed all along Bright Street through the night. The purpose of the Bright Street Carnival is to highlight the Somerset West area, to create a family
