THREE FIND LOADED GUN IN BROADLANDS ROAD

Boy (8) killed in gun game DELIAH BRINKHUIS Three boys found a gun on the road and took it home to play with. Within minutes, one of them was dead.

The 11-year-old boy and his nine-yearold friend from Broadlands Village, Strand, are receiving counselling from a psychologist, while eight-year-old Zephwin Mentoor, who was in Grade 2 at Rusthof Primary, will be buried this Saturday. The 11-year-old will appear in court today (Thursday) on a charge of murder after the tragedy that played itself out in Daisy Street on Monday afternoon. Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesperson for Strand police, says the gun

involved, a 9 mm PX4 gun, is similar to a police gun. The boys allegedly found the gun wrapped in two Shoprite bags in Broadlands Road. It had apparently been reported stolen. They took it to the 11-yearold’s home, where they then apparently removed bullets out of the magazine. The boy’s sister, 29, was in her bedroom when she heard a loud bang at 15:00. “I told a friend the children were throwing stones on the roof again and asked him to have a look,” she says. She then saw her brother and two friends running from the house. Two of the boys ran towards the street, but the eight-year-old collapsed. “Zebbie came running towards me, but turned around and collapsed under

the washing line,” she said. She rushed to him and was joined by neighbours, who tried to resuscitate him. “We did not know he’d been shot. The neighbour applied CPR and we hung a blanket over the washing line for shade.” It was only when a paramedic moved the boy half an hour later and bullets were found under his body that they realised that he had been shot. “His hand was clenched and when the ambulance man moved him, three bullets were found under him,” she said. The 11-year-old was questioned by police on Monday and released into the care of his sister. Continued on page 4

Man sells stolen newspapers A man will appear in court on theft charges next month, after police caught him selling stolen newspapers. While patrolling members of Strand police at 07:30 on 2 February found a suspect in possession of stolen property on the corner of Main and Lourens River roads. The suspect was selling newspapers. They approached him and found that the papers’ receipt indicated that newspapers belonged to Kwikspar on Broadway Boulevard, Strand. When questioned, the man said he had got the newspapers from a friend and later that he got it from a rubbish bin. The police then took him and the newspapers to Kwikspar on Broadway Boulevard, where the owner confirmed the newspapers had been stolen. The suspect had 13 copies of the Cape Times and eight of the Cape Argus, worth R120. The suspect, Vernon Booysen (29) from Eerste River, was arrested for possession of stolen property. He appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on 3 February. The case was postponed to 12 March.

FATAL STABBING: Lwandle police are investigating a murder case after the body of a 30yearold man was found on an open piece of land between Van der Stel and Strand last Thursday at about 13:00. Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama, police spokesper son, says the man may have been stabbed in the nearby Asanda Village and had run towards Main Road to seek help. Anyone with information is asked to phone the station on 021 845 2060. PHOTO: DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Onbekende liggaam

X1PQMMXR-DP120215

Macassar-polisie is Vrydag 6 Februarie ongeveer 22:30 in kennis gestel van ’n liggaam by die Zandvliet-suiweringsdiensterrein. By nadere ondersoek is ’n ontbinde liggaam deur ’n sangoma gevind. Daarna is ’n Zimbabwiese-paspoort en ’n selfoon by hom gevind. Die oorledene was in ’n blou werksbroek geklee. Hennie Swart by 021 857 107 bel.

The warning comes after three robberies were reported to the Gordon’s Bay Police in less than a month. Two of these incidents happened last Thursday (5 February). According to the police, three men in a white car with a CY registration had picked up a woman who was walking along the N2 at about 14:00. The driver told her that he would give her a lift to Lwandle and told her to get into the back of the car, where two men were already sitting, as there were items packed on the front seat. As soon as she got into the car, she was robbed of her cellphone, R40 in cash and her ID. The men then dropped her off in the nearby Helderberg Industria area. Police say a similar incident was reported half an hour prior to this incident when a woman who was walking towards Gordon’s Bay, was also picked up by a motorist, just after the Broadlands intersection. A few metres further he stopped to pick up two men standing next to the road. The woman was also threatened with a firearm and her personal belongings, including a cellphone, were stolen. The men drove towards Gordon’s Bay and pushed her out of the car just after the traffic lights on the N2. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation can phone WO Cobus Greeff on 021 856 2317 or 083 234 6354.

Visenteringslasbriewe is uitgereik. Daar is op 324l drank in Jolene Simonsstraat beslag gelê en in Malgasstraat is 47,25l drank gevind. Volgens stasiebevelvoerder lt.kol.

Skoolhoof sit voet neer oor taxi’s DELIAH BRINKHUIS

8 ABELIA STREET PRICES VALID TILL 15 FEBRUARY 2015 OR WHILE STOCKS LAST

“Snaakse dinge gebeur in dié taxi’s. ’n On-

Zephwin was a ‘quiet child’

Lionel Adams, the father of Zephwin Men toor. PHOTO:DELIAH BRINKHUIS

With DistrictMail’s visit to Rusthof Primary on Tuesday, Zephwin’s Grade 2 class teacher Reney Paige said he had been a quiet child who hardly spoke. His work showed progress, she said, as she paged through his class workbook, showing off neat work. Nicholene Heunis, Zephwin’s Grade 1 teacher, describes him as a friendly boy with a beautiful personality who always had a smile on his face. She remembers how he would walk with his hands in his trouser pockets. “He had a sparkling personality and was one of those children who got into your heart from the outset. I cannot believe this has happened.” Friends remember him for his love of rugby and playing catch. The youngster did not attend school on

Monday as his school clothes had still been wet. “I didn’t get everything done in time for school on Monday and said he could stay at home,” said his father, Lionel Adams who is a single parent. “He was like a star and loved watching movies. He would perfectly re-enact scenes after just watching a movie twice. “I dreamed of him becoming an actor one day, and had applied for a painter’s job to be able to look after him better,” he said. Jannie Frieslaar, chairperson of the Broadlands Park community organisation says Monday’s shooting was a tragic accident. He says alcohol and drug abuse are rife in the community, leaving children vulnerable and exposed to crime. He says the organisation is planning to have a meeting with parents to address this.

The Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch warned on its Facebook page on Saturday that there had been an increase in burglaries last week. According to the post, burglars were gaining entry into houses by forcibly removing doors and windows. The neighbourhood watch referred the

DistrictMail to the police when we contacted them for comment this week. Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for the Somerset West police, confirmed that there has been a slight increase in burglaries in the Land-en-Zeezicht area, and in Sir Lowry’s Pass, compared to last year. “Patrols have been increased in those areas,” Jantjies said. She also confirmed that entry was being ained by removing windows or forcing open windows and doors. “The community can assist us by closing windows, doors and sliding doors at night.

In the majority of reported cases, windows had been left wide open.” Jantjies asks that residents not replace windows or doors before fingerprints have been taken by the police. “Removing or tampering with the crime scene has a negative impact on the investigation.” Jantjies also advises residents to note down the serial numbers of cellphones, television sets and other electronic equipment, and to keep clear photographs of valuable items such as jewellery. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with burglaries in Sir Lowry’s Pass.

A weight loss of 20kg or more over 3 months or less has been achieved by many clients all over the world following the Cambridge Core programme with a starting weight of BMI of 30 plus when used as part of a low Calorie diet. XXXXXX-DP120215

The numbers and measurements are in – the winner of the first Helderberg Weight-loss Challenge, using the products and support supplied by Cambridge Weightplan SA, has been named. And it was Somerset West resident Werner Gort who triumphed in the weight loss and lifestyle change competition after he lost 9,6kg in just 21 days. Werner was named the winner at a ceremony on Monday 9 February; the announcement was made on-air on Radio Helderberg. Werner was one of five contestants to sign up for the challenge, which saw participants change their meal plans to the nutritionally complete formula food provided by Cambridge Weightplan for only 21 days. Each contestant was also assigned an Accredited Cambridge Consultant from Cambridge Weightplan, who assisted them with cognitive behavioural techniques during this weight loss journey. It has been proven over and over by Cambridge Weightplan that is the behavioural adjustments made with support of the Cambridge consultant that lead to long term weight loss and weight maintenance results. The five contestants achieved and exceeded

all expectations, with the total weight-loss being more than 34 kg and an amazing 126 cm over the 21-day period. Cambridge Weightplan was created after years of research by Dr Alan Howard and Dr Ian McLean-Baird, as they sought to develop the “perfect diet”, while at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Their formula produced excellent weight loss and the first commercial version of Cambridge Weightplan, The Cambridge Diet, was launched in the UK in 1984. It was first introduced in South Africa in 2008, when Cambridge SA CEO John Potgieter, who discovered Cambridge Weightplan in the UK, brought it to our shores. The Cambridge Weightplan is the undisputed global gold standard in low calorie formula food. Available in more than 30 countries across the world, more than 25 million users have used it for more than 30 years. It consists of a wide range of low calorie pre-packaged formula foods available as soups, shakes, bars and porridges. It is available from independent accredited Cambridge consultants throughout South Africa. The long-term weight loss results achieved while following the Cambridge Weightplan journey is as a result of the weekly support provided by a consultant who assists you to make

food behavioural and long-term lifestyle changes by applying cognitive behavioural techniques. With Cambridge only you can do it, but you don’t have to do it alone. Cambridge Weightplan: real people, real support, real results. Helderberg Weight-loss Challenge winner Werner, who lost a total of 16 cm during the challenge, will be continuing with the programme. But it was touch-and-go for him, as he nearly missed the deadline to enter. ‘‘My entry made it in the nick of time and I was so excited to hear that I was one of the five participants,” he says. ‘ “From a young age, I have always loved diving. When this competition was announced, I thought it would be the ideal opportunity to take that first step towards becoming a professional diver. I want to lose at least another 10 kg before I enrol at the Seadog Diving School this year.” For his prize, Werner and his sweetheart will spend a romantic Valentine’s weekend at the Arabella Spa, compliments of Cambridge Weightplan SA. No one is prouder of Werner’s achievement than his consultant, Sonja du Plessis. ‘‘Werner was just great; he didn’t deviate from the Cambridge Weightplan protocols and stayed in contact with me every day. I am so proud of him.”

SMALL BUSINESS OWNER DESCRIBES THE FUTURE AS ‘DARK’

Business sapped by power cuts DALEEN FOUCHÉ Job losses and business closures are becoming possibilities for local businesses as the ongoing power cuts start to take their toll. Earlier this month, Eskom announced that South Africans will have to live with power cuts for the next three years. And many local businesses are already struggling to come to grips with this new reality. Tony Da Silva, manager of Fish for Africa, a fish retailer in the Gants Centre, says they are struggling to cope with load shedding. Despite it having little effect on their stock, customers do not visit the store during load shedding. “We also have to stop our take-away service, because it’s reliant on electricity.” Fish for Africa is looking to buy a generator, but Da Silva says a generator to power their massive fridges – which can hold up to 60 tons of fish – will cost a fortune. Neves Gattinho, co-owner of Central Mini Market in the Somerset West CBD, says although they have a generator, it can only supply electricity to the lights which uses singlephase electricity, but not the fridges, which needs three-phase electricity. Two computers are currently in for repairs as a result of damage from the power surges that result from electricity being restored. Gattinho urges shoppers to bring a cool bag along when shopping, as load shedding interrupts the cold cycle for two hours at a time. She says although this does not affect the produce, many customers do not return home immediately after shopping, causing the produce to be out of a fridge for even longer than the two hours induced by load shedding. Gattinho describes the future as “dark”. “This is a very difficult time,” she says.

Central Mini Market is considering alternative sources of energy for the fridges. Even though Lourensford Wine Estate launched a state of the art solar farm on the roof of its tasting room and cellar late last year, the estate is still heavily affected by load shedding. Koos Jordaan, general manager, explains that the purpose of the 500mw solar farm was to reduce both Eskom bills and the farm’s carbon footprint. As the solar farm cannot produce an uninterrupted supply of energy, the wine production is severely affected. He says their current generator cannot supply the entire cellar with power as the cellar would require a massive generator. “The most important aspect of winemaking is cooling,” says Jordaan. “The industry uses the most of its electricity on keeping the wine cool in its various stages of production. The cooling process must be uninterrupted, or else the quality may be compromised. This may lead to financial losses.” But Jordaan says the blackouts also affect other facets of production such as the pressing process. Ripe grapes have to be processed and pressed as soon as possible and without interruption. “We cannot be reliant on the national grid any more.” Marc Sturn, manager of The Cattle Baron in Somerset West, says their food stock is not affected by load shedding as the restaurant’s freezers can remain effective for up to 24 hours. But turnover, he says, is heavily affected because the kitchen cannot run without power. “We have to close our doors when the power goes out.” Further losses are incurred because staff members have to be paid for being at work during blackouts. Some businesses have managed to plug in solutions.

THE FUTURE IS NOW: The solar panels on the roof of the Lourensford Wine Estate’s cellar and tasting room. PHOTO: DALEEN FOUCHÉ The Friedman & Cohen department store in Strand is able to keep the lights on and the tills operating with its backup generator. Grant Goodwin, director of Friedman & Cohen, says that 20% of the lights are powered by the generator, but this will soon be doubled. With careful planning, the restaurant is also able to keep operating during blackouts. Nina’s Family Restaurant in Beach Road, Strand is also fully operational during blackouts. “Ninety-seven percent of our operation

runs on gas,” says owner Johnny Bezuidenhout. Isabel Nortje, owner of construction equipment supplier Turner Morris in Strand says generator sales are “very brisk”, with stock flying off the shelves as it comes in. The demand for generators for households and businesses is very high. “Currently we only have generators that can supply energy to power tools, not entire households. But we are expecting new stock next week.”

A Strand resident notified the police when a burglar was in the process of stealing his high pressure gun at 22:00 on Wednesday 4 February. The resident heard his dog barking outside, looked through the window and saw an unknown man in the process of pulling his high pressure gun through the window of the garage. When the complainant shouted at the

man, the suspect ran away with the high pressure gun, worth R3 500, in his hand. The complainant’s son-in-law chased after the suspect and caught him with the stolen property. The man was arrested for housebreaking and theft. He appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Monday 9 February. The outcome was not known at the time of going to print.

Tow-truckers in court for assault

DELIAH BRINKHUIS Three employees of En Route Towing (aged 32, 40 and 50) were arrested on Tuesday and will appear in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court today (Thursday) to face a charge of assault. This follows after a charge of assault was laid against the company’s employees and owner after a fender bender ended in a fist fight in Bizweni two weeks ago. (“Tow-trucker in fist fight”, DistrictMail, 5 February 2015). The accident that provoked the drama occurred when a Toyota Conquest bumped into a Mercedes on the corner of Bizweni and Schapenberg Roads at 07:45 on Tuesday 3 February.

The owner of En Route Towing, Jaco Truter, admitted to DistrictMail last week that he had indeed hit the driver of the Mercedes. “I simply wanted to calm him down,” he said, explaining that he had restrained the driver after he punched one of his drivers. The driver then allegedly punched Truter in the face, which is when Truter admits he hit him on the chest. A passenger in the Toyota Conquest has now come forward to say that the tow-truckers had merely come to their aid as the driver of the Mercedes was “being aggressive” towards them. “He shouted at my dad, ‘Do you know how old my car is?’ she recalls. The driver and his wife also hurled racial insults, the woman claims.

She says the tow-truckers asked the driver a few times to calm down and “speak “decently”. She says he, however, continued to verbally attack them. “I believe that he would have assaulted my dad if the tow truck drivers had not intervened.” When the DistrictMail contacted the driver of the Mercedes on Wednesday, he said he had suffered severe concussion and was booked off until the last week of February. He denied that he and his wife had hit the tow truck drivers and that they had made racial comments towards the occupants of the Toyota Conquest. Sgt Suzan Jantjies, police spokesperson, says the men were warned to appear in court today.

A Somerset West resident lies in the road after a fist fight with a towing company following a fender bender in Bizweni on Tuesday two weeks ago. Three employees of En Route Towing will appear in court today to answer to a charge of assault laid by the Somerset West resident.

Hulle is verlede Donderdag by ’n gedenkdiens in Pretoria gegroet.

eniging by ’n vorige verklaring volstaan. By navraag het prof.

HUGE SPURT IN POPULATION GROWTH

7

It’s official: Somerset West is no longer a village DALEEN FOUCHÉ The Helderberg had a 42% increase in population between 2001 and 2011, growing from 154 216 to 218 503 residents in the space of ten years. In comparison, Cape Town as a whole, inclusive of the Helderberg, had a 25% increase in population in this same period. This is according to information from the City of Cape Town, drawn from Global Insight Regional eXplorer. The rapid growth in population is one of the two main factors driving the extensive development currently under way in the Helderberg. The other main factor is the availability of large swathes of developable land. Last week the DistrictMail published a comprehensive guide to all the developments that will take place this year, from developments on the old AECI site through to the R4 billion Sitari Fields development, and numerous other residential and commercial developments. This week Stuart Pringle, chairperson of Subcouncil 8, highlighted how the City of Cape Town is investing in infrastructure to support the development of the Helderberg. He says the Helderberg falls within the Eastern District of the City of Cape Town, which is acknowledged as a rapid growth area. Somerset West, he said, has not been a “village” for a very long time. In 1969 there were only about 7 000 people in Somerset West. He estimates that there are now between 80 000 and 100 000 people living in Somerset West.

Pringle says the maintenance and upgrade of infrastructure is a top priority for the City of Cape Town. This includes sewage and road upgrades. Transport upgrades are especially important, he says, adding that various transport projects in the Helderberg are in the planning stage. An amount of R1,1 million is on this year’s budget for the transformation of the Somerset West taxi rank into a public transport hub for bus and taxi services. A tender to create a non-motorised transport system, including cycle lanes and wheelchair-friendly sidewalks, will be put out for submissions next month, while construction is projected to start in August. Pringle says the city is focusing on getting the balance between conservation and urbanisation right. This, he says, is especially important in the Helderberg, because of its beautiful scenic views and landscapes that could become an even bigger driver for economic activity through tourism. Another big priority for the City of Cape Town is to tackle economic and social development. According to Pringle, the majority of people moving to the City of Cape Town live in informal settlements and backyards. Projects such as the creation of informal trading areas in Somerset West and Macassar and the Nomzamo business hub are addressing the need for economic development in diverse communities, Pringle says. ) For a detailed breakdown of all the infrastructure projects driven by the City of Cape Town in the Helderberg, visit www.districtmail.com.

Various road upgrades and infrastructure projects are planned for the current financial year. Here construction workers are busy in Main Road, Strand.

What about the roads? After reading your article (“Another year, another boom”, DistrictMail, 5 February 2015) I am deeply concerned: all these developments, yet nothing about new roads. It is pleasing to read about waste management upgrades, but what about all the cars? Nowadays, each household has a car and many two. I have lived happily in Gordon’s Bay since 1958, when it took less than an hour to drive to Cape Town and half that to Stellenbosch. We also had a safe train to Cape Town and a bus to Stellenbosch.

Neighbourhood watches need members, why not join? In my opinion, there are two main reasons why the Helderberg needs more members to join the neighbourhood watches: . The rapid growth in population during the past ten years to just under a million people; and . The need to establish and foster a sense of community among these newcomers. Cape Town is an attractive metropolis, a firstworld hub of culture with intellectual life, restaurants and scenery, but even here people are gradually being alienated. It has been impressive though, to see how quickly leaders in this large urban basin have managed to establish an outstanding series of

neighbourhood watches. The participating organisations in this initiative are: Secure Rite Security, Gordon’s Bay Security, ADT and TSU Protection Services. These neighbourhood watches share crime intelligence, information about suspects, safety and security and provide fast, coordinated responses to emergencies; in the last half-year alone, 25 to 47 suspects have been arrested. These organisations dedicated to combating crime can be contacted at 021 840 0009 or at somersetwestnw@gmail.com for details.

Report those service matters to City for quick action During the 2013/14 financial year, the City of Cape Town spent a record R2,9 billion on repairs and maintenance. In order to respond efficiently to residents’ maintenance needs, the City has a reporting system called C3 in place, which is rated best in South Africa in the public sector, and third best in South Africa for the private and public sectors as a whole. C3 notifications operate on an electronic tracking system that effectively monitors progress on service delivery affecting issues such as leaking water meters, the mowing of vegetation, treetrimming, outages of street lights, meter reading and dumping on public open spaces. By reporting faults, complaints, vandalism and theft of City property, residents can play their part in achieving the well-run city we are all striving for. In turn the City by providing various reporting channels to residents, can ensure that services are delivered promptly and efficiently, in line with its commitment to being responsive to its citizens. The City has various reporting channels availa-

ble to residents: ) Telephone: 0860 103 089 at all hours and all areas, for potholes, damaged roads, flooding, area cleaning, illegal dumping, waste collection and disposal, cable theft, illegal electricity connections, power failures, etc. ) E-mail: Contactus@capetown.gov.za ) SMS to 31220 or e-mail power@capetown.gov.za for electricity-related enquiries ) Eskom supply areas: 0860 037 566 ) SMS to 31373 or e-mail waterTOC@capetown.gov.za or water.informalsettlements@capetown.gov.za for water-related enquiries ) City website: www.capetown.gov.za, either via ‘eServices’ or ‘Have Your Say’ Residents are encouraged to use these channels and are asked to retain any reference number provided, which can be forwarded to the ward councillor for follow-up. Your relevant ward councillor’s details are available on www.capetown.gov.za.

KNORHOEK-INWONER

Sê jou sê • A neighbourhood watch is a community organisation with no designs on commercial expansion. There are no egos involved and no big bucks involved – just residents who want to keep their suburbs and streets safe for their families. Die man kort a Bells! • Ek vra reeds langer as sewe jaar vir spoedbulte in Eerste Straat, agter die Cinnamon Square, Strand. Ontevrede • Wat maak National Asset Patrol vol swaargewapende manne in Strand-Noord by die kerk? Ben Serfontein

Will the one who damaged my car come forward? I was parked outside FNB in Somerset West Main Road on Monday 26 January. On my exit, I noticed that there was damage to the front and front sides of my car. The parking-metre attendant told me that someone had reversed over the yellow barrier line, after he motioned the driver to stop. You hit my car and then you drove away. He supplied me with your registration number and vehicle make. You never got out to inspect the damage you had caused. You also chose to ignore the attendant who was telling

you to stop. I am hoping that you were perhaps in a hurry and, as you have quite a large vehicle, didn’t realise you had hit my car. So based on that, I am giving you the benefit of the doubt. I am challenging you to come forward and pay the damages you have caused to my car. I have been to the police station and reported the incident. Please prove that there is some honesty still left in this world. I hope you will respond so we can resolve this.

goed gebalanseerde oes.” First Fruit Pinot Nor Rosé is net in beperkte hoeveelhede beskikbaar en sal net te koop wees by Lourensford se proelokaal.

FAIRBAIRN LES

My beloved husband and our dad passed away on 11-02-1993. To some you may be forgotten but thought of our times together will be with us forever. Our wish is to have you back the same old way. Still missed by wife Jean, children and grand children.

SHELVER – RUSSELL 23-06-1954 – 11-02-2010

In loving memory of Russell who passed away 5 years ago on 11.2.2010. I think of you with so much love but that is nothing new. I think of you in silence and so often speak your name. It broke my heart to lose you but you left wonderful memories behind and there is not a day that goes past without a reminder of you. Although I cannot see you, I know you are at my side guiding and watching over me. I love and miss you. Your loving wife, Cheryl - RIP

Crayfish walk out in droves on West Coast beaches

There has been a number of reports and enquiries from readers about the large patches of pinkish water appearing in various sections of False Bay during the past week.

These patches of so-called “geelbek” water can suddenly bloom into a lethal red tide. Offshore winds blowing across the surface water cause upwelling from the depths and with this cold water these microscopic organisms, which are responsible for red tide, are blown to the surface and bloom. Once this dense bloom has occurred, only a change in wind direction can disperse and dissipate the red tide. This red tide has now appeared along the West Coast and has caused crayfish (kreef) to walk out of the water and onto the beaches due to the lack of oxygen, depleted by the red tide. Nature conservation officers are having a torrid time, preventing the public from taking these toxic crayfish home. Local spinnermen are still having fun fishing and spinning for leeries alongside the slipway and off Blake’s Beach. Very few elf have been caught by shore anglers, whether spinning or using bait. Small boats and kayaks have boated kob, geelbek, dassies and the odd white stump in Die Poort and off Melk Bay areas. The Pearly Beach Shore Angling Club held

a successful monthly competition on Saturday. A total of 22 fish was weighed. These included 20 kob, one elf and one hottentot. Hannes Smuts won with three kob of (5 kg, 6 kg, and 8 kg) followed by Rian Steyn, also with three kob (5 kg, 4,5 kg, 3 kg). Ferdi Joubert was third, with three kob (5 kg, 3 kg, and 6,5 kg); fourth was Chris Botha, also with three kob (2,5 kg, 3 kg, 5 kg). The kob were caught between Pearly Beach and Rietfontein. Pieter Brink fished off Macassar Beach on Saturday and Sunday and reported good catches of kob of between 4 and 6 kg. He also reported that there were some good dassie and belman caught in the area. Alan du Plessis reported excellent catches of kob, which he tagged and released, at Die Walle, Struisbaai on Friday. On Sunday Alan and crew on the boat Tyler could only locate and catch four small yellowfin tuna, fishing 10 miles off the Point. Alan will now be returning to Struisbaai to fish for marlin. For charters to catch marlin, phone 083 453 2808. An interesting report from Earl Fenwick said there ere two large dorados caught by a ski boat 10 miles off Cape Point. There was also yellowtail caught on Friday at Robben Island during the day and geelbek during the late afternoon and at night. Some excellent catches of mackerel, caught just off the Battery at Simon’s Town have also been reported. If the water remains between 19°C and 20°C, these mackerel should stay in the bay and attract the larger fish. Small boats fishing in False Bay and at Hangklip also filled their quotas of geelbek. There were reports of rock and surf anglers catching geelbek of Louis Becker with the magnificent 4,2kg red stumpnose up to 8 kg at Betty’s Bay. caught on the boat Haven during the recent Gordon’s For all your reel repairs and serBay Boat Angling Club’s Inshore Classic competition. vices, contact Art on 021-854 3831 Not only was this red stumpnose Fish of the Competi Send all your fishing news and tion it also resulted in Louis being named top angler in pics to bjridgway@telkomsa.net the competition.

Dropped catches cost Macassar the game Macassar drew their First Division D match against Brooklyn Telkom at Milnerton on Saturday. There was no play on day 1 (last Saturday) due to a wet outfield so both captains agreed to a 30-over first innings declaration. Macassar batted first and were in all sorts of trouble, losing early wickets as Brooklyn made full use of the bowler-friendly pitch. Macassar scored 73/9 in its 30 overs. Top batsmen were Q. Bowman (15), J. Fortuin (12) and D. Sebastian (13). Brooklyn also battled as J. Fortuin took the top order apart with figures of 14-7-23. Brooklyn were all out for 70 in 25 overs. The other bowler among the wickets was captain N. Swartland with 8-3-31. The second innings started with 65 overs left in the day. Macassar’s wickets fell quickly and, with the score on 45/5, it was J. Fortuin (34) and Q. Bowman (42*) who took the score to 133/9 in 33 overs. They were well supported by E. le Roux and A. Swartland both with 16 runs each. Captain N. Swartland declared and gave Brooklyn a target of 134 runs to win in 31 overs. The Brooklyn batsmen went for the total and in the process lost wickets regularly. Macassar also dropped five catches in the outfield and with just 10 overs left Brooklyn needed 54 runs to win. The spin duo of N. Swartland with 3/37 and A. Roberts 3/11 brought Macassar back in the game, leaving Brooklyn Telkom with six runs to win off the last over and still two wickets in hand. J. Fortuin was given the ball and picked up a wicket with the second ball of his spell. Macassar then needed one wicket to win off the last ball of the day, while Brooklyn Telkom required two runs. Fortuin bowled a brilliant yorker and the Brooklyn batsman got a leg bye as the LBW was not given, leaving them on 133/9 in 31 overs. The game ended in a tie, with the scores level on 133. J. Fortuin was man of the game with bowling figures of 25-10-50.

BALL GIRLS: A number of Somerset House girls recently had the privilege of being the ball girls for a hockey test match between the South African and Belgium women’s teams at Hartleyvale in Observatory. It was a closely contested game which SA won 10. This was a wonder ful experience for the girls and they loved every minute, said Mandy McIlroy, sports director at Somerset House. “It was just what they need ed to get them into the mood for our Summer Astro League, which takes place against eight local primary schools (Beaumont, Somerset West, De Hoop, Somerset College, Lochnerhof, Hendrik Louw, Gordon’s Bay and Somerset House) played at Somerset House on Monday evenings from 16:00 to 20:00. The senior boys are playing in a similar Summer League Indoor Tournament at Somerset College. This is a wonderful opportunity for our children in the Helderberg to prepare for the up and coming hockey season,” she said.

All Pirates baseball teams scuppered on Saturday This past weekend was a dismal one for the Helderberg Pirates baseball teams, as they all failed to beat their opponents on the day. The first senior side, third on the log, are facing off against the log leaders and runnersup in their next games. Pirates struggled to beat newly relegated Grassy Park Crusaders and things were no different when Pirates hosted Crusaders at Radloff Park on Saturday. Pirates, who seem to have worked on their fielding, had minimal errors and didn’t fare

badly with the bat, but were just outgunned by a stronger Crusaders side. Crusaders brought in five runs within the first three frames, while their strong defence put the game out of reach for Pirates in the early stages of the game. Pirates, however, showed their resilience and fighting spirit up to the final frame and prevented the game from being called on the “mercy” rule, as happened last time the two teams met – and ended the game 9-2. The Masters’ side also struggled to beat

their travelling opposition on Saturday, as a strong, experienced Silvertree side beat them 11-2. The Masters lost their last three games, but have shown they are a formidable force and are expected to get back to winning the last few games of the season. The Pirates junior sides all played Grassy Park Crusaders in their various age groups and fought hard, only narrowly losing their games. The u.15s lost 10-17 and the u.12s lost 7-9, while the spirited u.10 side came agonisingly close, losing 12-13.

SWCC bowlers too good for Nyanga

Somerset West beat Nyanga by seven wickets at Radloff Park on Saturday to maintain their winning record.

Somerset West resumed the first innings by adding 37 runs off the remaining five overs to close their innings on 207/5, to give them a 76 run lead. Abri du Plessis smashed 24* off just 16 balls. Nyanga’s second innings was better than their first and the batsmen made the SWCC seamers toil with little success in their opening spells. Spinners, James Wilshire 17-2-44 and Bobby Londt 11-3-21 then joined the attack and swung the match in SWCC’s favour through disciplined bowling, leaving Nyanga on 83/4 at lunch. Francois Killian returned for a second spell after lunch and cleaned up the Nyanga tail with a spell of 11-3-23. He was supported by Michael Osborn, who claimed the wicket of the Nyanga mainstay batsman. Nyanga were eventually dismissed for 168, setting SWCC a target of 93. SWCC got into trouble early on after losing opener Morne Snyman and number three batsman Bobby Londt with

their score on six. Sergio Hilario (24*) and Francois Killian (55), however, consolidated the innings with a partnership of 70 runs. The second team scored a 10-wicket victory in their away match against Mitchell’s Plain. The hosts started their second innings on 36/3 and were bowled out for 147 to give them a four-run second innings lead. Skipper Pierre Henry Hurn led the attack with 3/46 and was supported by Arnand Swart with two wickets and Christiaan Jooste with three wickets. Mitchell’s Plain conceded to hand SWCC a 10-wicket victory. The third team hosted Blue Bells and beat them by 35 runs. SWCC won the toss and batted first, posting 156/7. Stephen Southey top scored with 74. Blue Bells were bowled out for 121. Ricky Heiberg led the bowling attack with figures of 5/28. The fourth team scored a five-wicket away win over Cravenby. The hosts batted first and were all out for 92 runs. Chris Norman was the pick of the bowlers with 6-5-8. SWCC passed the score in the 24th over. Skipper Stoffel Botha scored 54* to lead the charge.

SWCC JUNIOR RESULTS

The SWCC juniors played in nine matches on Saturday, the highlight being the u.15s playing in and winning their first WPCA league match. The u.10 Gremlins drew with Durbanville at home. SW batted first and posted 171/7. Michael Royden-Turner top scored with 54 off 29 balls. Durbanville defended their last wicket to force a draw. Ethan Arlow and man of the match Michael RoydenTurner took two wickets each. The u. 10 Goblins faced Durbanville away and lost by two wickets. Goblins scored 127 and the hosts passed the target with two wickets standing. Man of the Match Jean-Pierre Mans hit 39 off 23 balls and took 3-4-6. The u. 10 Wizards faced Edgemead u. 11 away and

won by one wicket. The hosts batted first posting 128/2. The Wizards passed the target in the last over. Joshua Cloete top scored with 24 runs. Matthew Wilcock, Spencer Thalrose and Jordan Swanepoel took 2 wickets each, conceding only 15 runs. The Vipers passed the score in 20 overs. Matthew Wilcock top scored with 38*. The u. 11 Mambas faced Bellville away and lost by 36 runs.Bellvillebattedfirstand scored 135/7. Ben Blaauw and Greg Williams each took 2 wickets. Bellville restricted the Mambas to 99/5. Boost for boxing as Insane Gym comes to Gants MARK STUART Boxing in the Helderberg received a massive, much-needed boost with the establishment of the Insane Boxing Gym in Gants Plaza. The gym opened less than a year ago and has already signed up nine professionals and 20 young amateurs. The gym is on the corner of Fabriek Street and the N2 where it shares premises with the CEY Crossfit Gym. It is run and managed by Tony Capazorio and Cammy Fernandes, who told DistrictMail that the gym had been built with passion. “It is family-based and we hope it will become a permanent home for boxing in the Helderberg. “Our aim is to get boxing back on SABC-TV, so that it can be exposed to the masses again,” Fernandes said. Insane Boxing will soon stage big boxing tournaments in the Helderberg, which will feature some top names in SA boxing.

“Toto Helebe, current SA Bantamweight champion joined our gym recentl, defended his Premier Boxing League title in the Orient Theatre in East London and was crowned overall division champion. “We believe we can take Toto to the world stage and have already linked up with promoters overseas to give him and other top-ranked pro fighters on our books the opportunity of fighting overseas,” said Fernandes. Helebe, who is coached by wellknown and respected Khayelitsha trainer Teach Madubedube, said he was really pleased that he and his trainer had joined the Insane Boxing Gym. He added that there was no other gym in the area with so many champions. Madubedube once coached SA junior lightweight champion Wiseman Jim and went with him to fight in England where they managed to achieve a draw. He has been a boxing coach for more than 25 years and believes Helebe is a good prospect who will eventually do well on the international circuit.

The ranked pros who have already signed with the Insane Boxing Gym are: Mzonke Fana, current World Boxing Association Pan African Champion junior lightweight (40 fights, 33 wins, 14 K/O’s and seven losses); Toto Helebe, current SA bantamweight champion in the super bantamweight (20 fights, 5 losses and 7 K/O’s), Lwandile Gugushe, currently ranked 5th in featherweight and campaigning in junior lightweight (15 fights, 6 losses, 6 knockouts), Christiano Ndombassy welterweight/junior middle weight from Angola (6 wins all K/O within 4 rounds) ranked 5th, Jimmy Mabanji middleweight (8 fights, 1 loss and 2 K/O’s) ranked 7th and Herman Potgieter heavyweight (2 fights, 0 losses and 1 K/O). Capazorio pointed out that the gym was not only for boxers, but for everyone who wanted to get fit. “We offer a cardio-boxing workout, which is very popular and a great workout for everyone.” For more information about the Insane Boxing Gym phone Tony Capazario on 072 184 1061.
