Long road lies ahead for arrestor bed PG 4

The business winners and losers PG 6 WALKING THE TALK: Ministers of the Anglican and Methodist Church, and Wes tern Cape Minister of Community Safety Dan Plato, took the lead in a march from Lwandle to Strand this past Sunday. The “Men’s March” was in support of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign against wo men and child abuse. Margaret Vertue, Bishop of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa and diocese of False Bay, officially opened the march at the St Mary’s Angli can Church in Lwandle. Vertue said vio lence against women and children is rife, even during the campaign period. She urged men to stand up against violence and make their voices heard. “Men are the protectors of women and should not abuse them.” The procession continued to the St John’s Anglican Church in Rusthof, where a pledge against violence was signed. GIRLS AGED BETWEEN 12 AND 15 LINE MACASSAR AND KRAMAT ROADS

Teen prostitution shock DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Half of the girls who stand along Macassar and Kramat Roads are between the ages of 12 and 15, according to Na-eema Samuels, founder of the Macassar safehouse, House of Grace. Kassiem Anthony, chairperson of the Macassar CPF, adds that one of the girls is a 15-year-old mother of two children. The number of prostitutes lining Macassar and Kramat Roads has visibly increased of late. While drugs play a key role, some girls are put there by their parents to earn an income for their family, says Ada Buys, manager of Patch, the Helderberg Centre for Child Sexual Abuse.

“Parents send their children to the streets. The older sister will be seen initially, and a few years later her younger sister will also be there.” Buys says that while the prevalence of under-age prostitution in Macassar is known, cases are only reported to Patch when assault or rape is involved. Councillor John Heuvel, chairperson of Subcouncil 22, says the subcouncil minuted the problem of prostitution at a subcouncil meeting in February 2013 and it has since been on the agenda every month. The subcouncil has been asking the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement department to intervene to remove the girls. “It’s sickening! It hurts as a parent to see how these young children sell their bodies. I

heard they are tikkoppe (tik addicts),” says Heuvel. “They use the excuse of unemployment to become involved in a life of prostitution and are not interested in enrolling into the Expanded Public Works Programme. If I could wish the problem away, I would – one prostitute is one too many,” says Heuvel. Teen prostitutes can be seen patrolling the streets from as early as 07:00 in the morning and throughout the day, their pimps never far away. The teen prostitutes are believed to mostly come from the nearby communities of Smartie Town and Macassar Village. “Half of the girls on the streets do not have a choice,” says Samuels. “They dropped out of school early and aside from getting on the back

of a truck to work as a farm labourer, their options are limited.” She recalls a 13-year-old girl who was left orphaned when her parents died. The child lived with family for a while, but she did not get the support she needed and she dropped out of school. She became involved in prostitution through her peers. Tik abuse is often the catalyst for prostitution, says Samuels. “Pimps lure these girls into prostitution through drugs, and before long they are addicted and in debt with these pimps,” says Samuels. Buys says drug addiction hampers successful treatment of the young prostitutes. She says that placing them in a safe house will be a step towards a life away from prostitution. “It is difficult to help them

if they stay in the area where the pimp also lives. Before long they will be back on the streets.” Nathan Ladegourdie, head of the Vice Squad, Law Enforcement and Specialised Services for the City of Cape Town, says that these units and the police conduct regular operations in the area to address the prostitution problem. He says 43 spot fines and 21 written warnings were issued in the last three months. In addition, Ladegourdie says the Department of Justice has been approached for the prosecution of these offences. Lt. Col Sindile Mbese, station commander of the Macassar Police, says no cases of prostitution have been reported to the station. Police are patrolling the area, he adds.

Long road ahead for N2 arrestor bed JAMEY GORDON

all likelihood only start around September 2015 as land may need to be expropriated for the purpose. At present, the position being looked at, falls within a declared nature conservation area.

Feedback on the possible construction of an arrestor bed on the N2 at the foot of the Sir Lowry’s Pass is expected in February next year. This is according to Al-Ameen Kafaar, communications head for the provincial Department of Transport and Public Works. Calls for an arrestor bed are growing ever louder after the death of two people in the last two years after heavy-duty trucks with brake problems crashed into their vehicles. Wynand Cillié (22), son of Laerskool De Hoop’s principal, Wynand Cillié, died after a truck crashed into his and five other vehicles at the Sir Lowry’s Pass/N2 intersection just before 09:00 on Saturday 29 November. The truck’s brakes apparently failed as it descended the pass. It crashed into Cillié and five other motorists who were stationary at the Gordon’s Bay intersection. Warrant Officer Nico Beukes, spokesperson for the Gordon’s Bay Police, could not confirm whether any of the other motorists involved in the accident sustained any serious injuries and were hospitalised as a result. However, it was confirmed that Cillié’s girlfriend, who was a passenger in his vehicle, was seriously injured. She is still in a coma in the Mediclinic Vergelegen. A memorial service for Cillié was

In September 2012, 25-year-old Thelana Kotze, a teacher from Stellenbosch, was killed when a heavy-duty truck drove over her small Nissan bakkie as she was crossing the same intersection. The brakes of the heavy duty truck had also apparently failed. While the roadway in question is the responsibility of the Western Cape government, the South African National Road Agency Limited (Sanral) included an arrestor bed in its N1/N2 Toll Highway Project plans, as the Sir Lowry’s Pass road would be diverted slightly under this project. Sanral’s arrestor bed plan was abandoned in October this year

at a meeting between Sanral and the Western Cape government. According to Kafaar, this was because the tolling project was placed on hold after the City of Cape Town instituted legal action against Sanral. He says the focus has now shifted to the Western Cape Transport and Public Works Department to build an arrestor bed – a project for which the department did not budget. Randall Cable, Sanral operations manager, says that due to the court interdict against Sanral and not being allowed to commence with any of the works identified as part of the tolling project, Sanral has been “prevented” from constructing an arrestor bed on the initial proposed location. He says that Sanral did not withdraw the availability of its land to the provincial government. Cable says the construction of an arrestor bed is not dependent on Sanral, as a proposed arrestor bed lower down on the pass may well fall within the jurisdiction of the provincial government. Cable says, however, that if the provincial government has any

other alternatives, it should speak to Sanral and communicate its needs. According to an engineer in the Department of Transport and Public Works, the initial position of the arrestor bed would have been beneficial for both the current and future alignment of the N2. An arrestor bed is now being looked at for positioning between 200 m and 400 m before the intersection. “We are doing further investigations into the best position for an arrestor bed as an emergency escape for runaway heavy vehicles, having to keep in mind that if the arrestor bed is situated close to the signalised intersection, traffic backed up from the intersection may block the path of a runaway vehicle and if too far back, drivers may miss the exit if they do not realise they have a braking problem.” Kafaar says that even if the provincial government manages to secure funds for the construction of an arrestor bed, construction will in

ANNETTE THERON “I hope this time I can make a change,” says Margie Kemp, who currently lives in the UK and started a petition to make Sir Lowry’s Pass safer for road users. The petition comes after the death of Wynand Cillié (22) following a tragic accident on the N2 at the foot of the Sir Lowry’s Pass on Saturday 29 November. Kemp says she and her husband had lived in Somerset West and, because she worked in Hermanus at the time, she used the road on a daily basis. One day a work colleague received a call. His parents had been in a car accident on Sir Lowry’s Pass. His mom had passed away and his dad was in intensive care. Kemp started writing to local au-

The campaign lost momentum until last week when her sister and brother-inlaw, who live and work in Somerset West, posted the picture of Wynand Cillié with an accompanying poem on Facebook. Kemp started a Facebook page called Petition To Make Sir Lowry’s Pass Safer and had an incredible response. At the time of going to print yesterday (Wednesday), the petition already had 1 064 signatures. Her plan is to compile a document stating the current state of affairs and proposals as to what can be done to make the road safer. She also wants to get as many people together for a town meeting where authorities can have the opportunity to explain their actions to the public.

While many local businesses are losing revenue through the crippling blackouts, others are cashing in on the surge in demand for offthe-grid goods. Business is booming for suppliers of generators, gas-powered appliances and lighting equipment. Turner Morris in Strand have sold so many generators over the past few weeks that they are actually out of stock, says manager Liezl Nortjie. She adds that the company has had to order morestockfromJohannesburgtokeep up with the demand. Elaine Arwie from Talisman Hire, also in Strand, says all their generators are hired out over weekends. He says they would order more stock to address the demand, but they do not have adequate storage space. EAR Engineering in Somerset West is expecting to sell out on generators very soon. Eagle Lighting in Somerset West is another business that has seen an increase in sales, particularly in LED and other lighting which does not require electricity to operate. iWarehouse in Somerset West has experienced increases in sales of a number of products including flash lights and inverters that allow household appliances to be powered by a car battery. Estelle Steyn at the Strand Gas Depot says their gas sales have skyrocketed as people start to realise power cuts

are going to be ongoing. They have not, however, seen an increase in gas-powered equipment such as water warmers, yet. Aldre van Staden, owner of One Energy in Somerset West, says inverters that convert solar power into electrical supply are flying off the shelves. He says solar-powered geyser sales have not increased of late, but he believes this is because we are still in summer. These businesses may continue to thrive as power interruptions are apparently set to continue for the next two years. This is according to Lynne Brown, national Minister of Public Enterprises, who spoke at a 16 Days of Activism meeting in Somerset West earlier this week. TheDistrictMailhasbeeninundated with local business owners’ and employees’ complaints about how the power cuts are gravely affecting productivity, sales and turnover. Local business owner Rynardt Janse Van Rensburg says he is losing at least R800 in wages alone for each hour that the power is interrupted. Hissawmillbusinesscannotoperate without electricity and he says running the factory on a generator will cost him about R3 000 an hour. Businesses such as Shaun Bosman’s internet cafe Uncapped Internet Cafe and Lorraine de Klerk’s connectivity and communications company Stelcom are also unable to operate without electricity. “This season of load shedding will cost my business tens of thousands of rands while Eskom reported the high-

est profits ever last year,” says Bosman. Both Bosman and De Klerk say buying a generator is not financially possible as they are small businesses. Buying or hiring a generator can be costly. A small 2,6 kilovolt-ampere (kVa) generator that can be used to power small appliances such as lights and small power tools can cost up to R150 per hour to run. A larger generator such as a 6 kVa, which can power small freezers and medium-sized power tools such as welding equipment, can cost up to R800 per hour to run. Panarottis and Bread of Heaven owner Andy Loughton says his ovens, in which an adult can stand upright, are simply too large to be powered by a generator and it is therefore not even an option for him. On Monday, Alderman Ian Neilson, the City of Cape Town’s acting executive mayor, called for an urgent meeting with Eskom to “deal with the unacceptable impacts that load shedding is having on the City’s economy”. Eskom’s CEO Tshediso Matona announced on Tuesday that load shedding will continue to be implemented into the new year. The DistrictMail asked its readers whether they are planning a traditional cooked Christmas meal, given the prospects of blackouts on Christmas day. Many said that load shedding will not get in the way of a full traditional meal for Christmas. Jacoba Louw said she is doing a traditional meal but that it will all be cold: “cold gammon, cold turkey, all smoked – easy-peasy”.

Bird repellent at centre questioned JAMEY GORDON “I had never seen anything like it. It appeared as if someone had poured a pot of glue over the little birds.” These are the words of Margaret van der Berg, a local veterinary nurse who recently had to euthanase two sparrow chicks after they were caught in a “glue-like” bird repellent, placed in the ceiling at Waterstone Village in Somerset West. According to Van der Berg, the little birds were brought to the veterinary clinic in Somerset West by a mother and daughter about a month ago. The birds were in a box covered with a black napkin marked Giovanni’s. Van der Berg says when she lifted the napkin, she found the birds covered in a glue-like substance with bruises to their chests. “It was one of the worst, most cruel things to see. I was ready to boycott Waterstone Village,” says Van der Berg. According to Cheryl Reeve, she was having lunch at Giovanni’s with her daughter, Candice Price and grandchildren on this particular day, when suddenly birds dropped from the ceiling. Reeve says four birds fell to the ground – two died instantly with the fall, while the other two survived. “The birds’ wings and claws were glued together. One of the birds also got the substance in its beak,” says Reeve, “They made a hell of a noise and the whole incident was very traumatic.” Reeve says upon inspection it appeared that the substance was placed on the arches of the building. She says she and her daughter tried to wash the substance off the birds, but it stuck like glue. They couldn’t even get it off their fingers. Van der Berg says she too could not get the substance off the birds and eventually had to euthanase them. Van der Berg also phoned centre manage-

The birds that were brought in to the veteri nary clinic in Somerset West were covered in a “gluelike” substance and had to be put down. ment to confront them about the matter and was told by Daphne Kriel, centre manager, that what they were doing is perfectly legal and is implemented at most shopping centres and malls. Kriel explained to DistrictMail that the substance is a bird repellent gel called Vamoose, which is only placed in the ceiling of the centre and nowhere outside the building due to the fact that the centre was built on a wetland.

She says the centre implemented bird control measures after receiving a notice from the Health Department six years ago instructing them to do so. Kriel says they had received complaints from anchor tenants experiencing problems due to the presence of the birds and because they house quite a few food outlets, the measures had to be implemented to prevent health risks. “An inspector of the SPCA visited the centre last week and we received no negative comments about Vamoose,” added Kriel. “This is also the first incident, that we are aware of where birds were actually harmed.” On the website of Bird Control Services, who produce Vamoose, the product is described as a clear, odourless and non-flammable gel bird repellent manufactured using food-grade ingredients and is applied to roosting and landing areas where birds create a nuisance. The bird repellent guarantees “the effective and harmless removal of messy birds from buildings”. The website explains that the product’s tackiness or stickiness – much like Elastoplast – give birds the feeling that they are being held or attacked by something. In a split second of panic the bird will fly out of the gelled area whilst at the same time putting out a distress signal to birds in the immediate vicinity. These areas immediately become associated with danger for them, compelling them not to return. Allan Bullard of Bird Control Services explains that the product is harmless, but also recognises the risk if not applied correctly. Bullard says the quantity of the product applied usually depends on the species of bird that needs to be deterred. He says, for example, when a problem with pigeons exists, the product is applied to a surface as a 5 mm bead – which is more than would be applied if for instance the Cape sparrow needed to be repelled. However, this would mean that if a smaller bird ends up in the substance it may not be strong enough to free itself.

Probe into bakkie accident The Western Cape Traffic Department has launched an investigation into a recent accident involving learners on an overloaded bakkie in Firgrove. Twenty learners from the Firgrove and Raithby Primary Schools, between the ages of seven and 12 years old, were transported to school from Lwandle on 28 November when the bakkie allegedly made an illegal U-turn, resulting in a collision with a truck. The driver of the bakkie allegedly swerved off the road, and seven children sustained minor injuries. According to Firgrove Primary School principal Vernon Hendricks, a traffic official allegedly pulled the bakkie over close to the traffic lights at the R102 and Grove Street intersection and asked that it report to the weigh bridge to be weighed. The driver allegedly panicked

and instead of turning at the traffic intersection, drove over a traffic island. The driver was allegedly issued a traffic fine of R2 500 for not having an operating license, which allows him to transport passengers. No case of negligent driving is being investigated and Macassar Police have filed a common accident report. ) Last week DistrictMail incorrectly reported that it had asked the Department of Transport and Public Works whether charges were brought against the driver of the bakkie, while instead having posed the question to the police. Siphesihle Dube, spokesperson for the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Donald Grant, says only the police and the National Prosecuting Authority can bring charges against any individual for any transgressions, following the opening of a criminal case.

Children’s parents sought The Department of Social Development in Somerset West is requesting the public’s assistance in locating the families of four children. The department is looking for the biological mother, Celeste Malgas and fathers, Ridwaan Adams and Rudy Davids of two children aged five and one. The children are currently in the care of the maternal grandmother, Katrina Malgas of Asanda Village. The department is also in search of George Hlalahoi,

who fathered two-year-old twins. The twins’ mother, Nosipho Florence, recently passed away and they are currently in the care of Tembelani Jaji and Sylvia Manqinana of Asanda Village. The last known address of the father is Block 33, Nkukhu Street, Harare, Khayelitsha. Anyone with information can contact social worker Adelle Meyer on 021 840 3500/3538, during office hours (07:30 – 16:00).

BUNDU JUSTICE: Masibongwe Bhenya’s case will again be heard in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on 16 January. Bhen ya (33), a traditional healer from Lwan dle, is believed to have led a bundu court on 8 September and is accused of the attempted murder of Luxolo Sisulu (30). Bhenya was also charged for mali cious damage to property. Sisulu was as saulted by an angry mob after allegedly breaking into a house in New Village and stealing items. Const Alfred Giyama, the investigating officer, previously testified how Bhenya had been the leader of the crowd and that he had tried to prevent the police from intervening in the attack and saving Sisulu. Bhenya was also charged on three char ges of malicious damage to property, which include breaking down the shack of the woman who had phoned the police and vandalis ing a police vehicle. Mail Who will stand up for the girls? Our front page story on teen prostitution in Macassar is a shocker and we hope that those role players that are able to make a difference, will draw together to put some plans into action – urgently. The problem of prostitution is not one of law enforcement or policing alone. It is not a problem that can merely be swept out of sight. Social workers, religious leaders and community workers play an invaluable role in stepping into the gap. A multisectoral forum ought to be established to bring law enforcement and community roleplayers together to tackle this problem. The problem will only grow if tackled from one angle alone, such as policing. The girls need a multifaceted intervention to stand a chance of getting off the streets. If the girls are worth saving; if there is any hope in their future or their ability to change, then let the community come together sensibly and tackle the problem in a way that can deliver a solution. Issuing fines here and making arrests there does nothing to really get to the bottom of the problem. It merely assuages our collective guilt that we are otherwise doing nothing. Someone needs to take the lead here. Who will stand up to do so? We wait with bated breath to see.

Waterstone’s security efforts should be commended I know this has already been talked about, but I strongly disagree with everything that’s been said about the security at Waterstone. Daphne’s explanation was not “poor”. The removal of items is not just about eliminating potential threats – it also helps to avoid other potential problems, such as shoplifting and pick-pocketing (yes, it happens). Hats and sunglasses conceal your identity to CCTV cameras, making it difficult to identify perpetrators. And yes, granny, even the elderly are suspect; elderly

people are caught shoplifting all the time, and for the record, a security guard’s job is not to be “polite”, especially when you blatantly disobey him by walking by. Why do people have this smug sense of entitlement nowadays? Why do you refuse to cooperate? It’s not a big deal to take off your hat in the spirit of combating crime (what do you need it for indoors anyway?), but no, you’d rather stand there and complain about how, in Martin van Eeden’s words, your “human rights” are being violated. Seriously, get over yourselves.

Waterstone is a private enterprise, not a democracy. They have every right to eject whoever they want from their premises, and so does every other establishment for that matter. That’s where the phrase “right of admission reserved” comes from. And may I also remind everyone that the reason for these measures is that someone was actually shot dead in the centre. Well I for one commend Waterstone’s efforts – at least they’re doing something about it.

Good service from Owerhede moet hul skaam, hulle ontneem ons van ‘7de Laan’ Victoria Cash Store In these times where good service is scarce, especially if bought goods are faulty, we would like to put in writing the good experience we recently had with a supplier! In July we bought three flat-screen TVs from Victoria Cash Store, Somerset West. In October two of the TVs gave problems. The manufacturer would not assist us and actually insisted that we were negligentandcausedthedamage.Thisiswhere YogifromVictoriaCashStoresteppedforward and went to great lengths to have the TVs repaired under guarantee. The TVs were collected and returned to our home, within a couple of days. This all within the “busy” season. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Yogi and his staff!

HSPC to host Christmas lunch, looks to the future The Helderberg Street People’s Centre (HSPC) will be hosting Christmas lunch for poor and homeless members of the community on Christmas Day. The centre will be open throughout the festive season to provide food, clothing, support and practical help to the needy. Any donations of roasted chicken, along with donations of cooldrinks, tinned and dried food produce would be much appreciated. These may be delivered to the soup kitchen at 9 Victoria Street (opposite Somerset West Library), between 08:30 and 13:00, from now until Christmas Eve.

Readers will also be aware that the HSPC has been given notice to vacate its premises (probably in March 2015), in order to make way for a transport hub that is being created by the City of Cape Town. The centre is actively looking at options to continue its work of feeding some 250 people in Somerset West and 750 people in the townships each day. We believe that we are making a difference in the lives of people, by not only preventing them from going hungry, but also by providing them with a place to which they can come for support and practical help. Such help ranges from the spon-

soring of skills training courses, to enrolling affected individuals in drugs or alcohol rehabilitation programmes. The HSPC believes that it undertakes necessary work within the community and looks forward to receiving continued support from the churches, residents and business community of the Helderberg. Wishing all volunteers, friends, donors and supporters a very blessed and happy Christmas and our heartfelt thanks for all your support during the year.

I am a registered immigration practitioner working at TIES Immigration in Main Road, Somerset West and would like to reply to the letter “Swallows want to know why visa laws have changed” which was featured on the letter’s page in last week’s DistrictMail (4 December 2014). Firstly the Old Immigration Act was passed in 2002 and it was due for a review. Secondly, international swallows/visitors can still renew their visitors’ visa for a further 90 days, but there have been some changes. Lastly, all Home Affairs immigration offices are closed and Home Affairs have now contracted Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) to facilitate all new applications lodged and receive outcomes. The permit is still checked and processed in Pretoria, so effectively VFS are the new Postal Service operating for Home Affairs. This visitor visa permit must be renewed at the new VFS offices in Cape Town within the first 30 days of arrival (this is rarely possible as VFS are very, very busy). The permit fee is still R425 for Home Affairs but VFS charge R1 350 for each application they receive.

The application must be lodged online (where checklists can also be found), printed and signed. Once you have selected your appointment date, you must go in person to the VFS offices for them to capture your biometrics (passport details). You can still use an agent to lodge this on your behalf, but you must accompany them when the application is lodged. Only original or certified copies are acceptable. Be warned that we are seeing a trend that three out of five visas come back with incorrect information on them. Please check your visa carefully on finalisation and, if necessary, you may have to go back online to book a rectification application. This application is free of charge. I hope this advice helps, as we do not want to send these very valuable clients back home too soon. We want them to remain in the Republic as long as possible.

Fun festival for families Winckler Events in partnership with Braai Ve’Note are bringing Helderberg residents and visitors the family event of the season: the Saamspeel Somer-Son-Fees on 16 December. The day will include three major events including a father-and-son touchies rugby tournament, singing competition and a live performance by Heinz Winckler, Andriette Norman and Lollos. The event at the Charles Morkel rugby stadium in the Strand will include 18 rides and slides for children, a craft market and Braai Ve’Note and other food stalls. competition will walk away with a recording contract with Earth.Song Productions, a professional music video worth R 20 000, a training session with Heinz Winckler about getting started in the music industry and a makeover by Aletté Winckler, a professional image consultant. The competition is open to all ages, meaning anyone is welcome to participate, including groups. Auditions will take place from 11:00 at the stadium. Finalists will be announced at around 14:00 and will perform for the audience and a panel of judges. Braai Ve’Note and Winckler Events are proud supporters of the Thembalitsha Foundation, who work to restore hope and develop peo-

ple to a point of self-reliance through the provision of health care, education and training, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the charity. The aim of the event it to create an opportunity for families to spend time together while being active, having fun, laughing and being entertained. Tips for fighting festive flab PETER JORDAN Once festive season parties begin, it is all too easy to replace exercise time for an extra drink at the bar or a few more minutes around the cookie jar. While letting your hair down for a couple of days will not do your health or fitness any harm, it is when this extends from the beginning of December to well into the New Year that it becomes a problem. According to a survey done by The British Dietetic Association, people gain 2 kg, on average, in the four weeks around Christmas alone. While avoiding the celebratory meals during the festive season may not be an option for you, a healthy dose of exercise and avoiding total over-

indulgence can lead to a healthier you come the new year. 1. Exercise early in the morning. Even the most diligent person will struggle to find motivation to train after a long day at the beach and a lazy late lunch. 2. Drink a glass of water before eating or drinking a soft drink. This will help to keep you from overindulging in those extra calories. 3. Use exercise to explore new areas. Enjoy the adventure of running or cycling where you have never been before. 4. Make exercise a family affair. Take the dog along and let the kids ride alongside. 5. Many holiday towns have activities like fun runs over the festive season to attract holidaymakers, keep an eye out for these. SOURCE: Women24

Danie Coetzee and Florian Breuer both obtained the same scores, but the judges had to decide on a winner and eventually selected Danie, who received the Golden Apple Award. Sue Tatham’s entry was also well received. Club meetings are held at the Somerset West Library Hall on the second Wednesday of the month. Festival lights bring joy to all The Somerset West Festival of lights was once again a great family affair. The official opening of the festival on 3 December saw the Somer-

set West Main Road transformed into carnival grounds. The event kicked off with the annual parade of drummies, brass bands and motorcycles. Jaco Losgelaat and other local

musicians entertained the crowd who also joined in the singing of Christmas Carols. Chairperson of subcouncil 8, Stuart Pringle, officially switched on the Christmas lights.

CATCH-UP LUNCH: A few 1965 matriculants from Hottentots Holland High School paid a visit to their alma mater recently. They are from left Lindy Rivett (Lake), Jetske Degens (de Vries), Viola Bell (Bisogno), Lesley Munro and Carol Miller (Venter) at lunch in the archives. Carol Miller organised the lunch in celebration of Lindy Rivett’s visit from Melbourne, Australia.

The Stradling family enjoyed the opening ceremony and parade. They are back from left Stephen Stradling, Anneke van der Vyver and Tracey Stradling. In the front are Tyler and Joshua Stradling.

END OF AN ERA: Matriculants and high school staff from the International School of the Helderberg cel ebrated an end of an era when they hosted a farewell function in Cape Town on 20 November. The even ing was a glamorous affair, filled with quite a few surprises which started off at The One and Only Hotel at the Waterfront where the staff, matriculants and their parents met for cocktails. The matrics were then picked up by a white limo and dropped off at the Ferris Wheel where they marvelled at the panoramic view of beautiful Cape Town. The evening ended at Stardust where everyone enjoyed a night of song, dance and good food. Seen here with the matriculants are (back, from left) Demetra and Leon van Dyk, Christine Mouton, Dorette and Casper Schutte, Bronwen and Cliff Sudano, CindyMae Putz and Darren Sta ples, Sheila and Nico Meyer and Lizanne and Hardey Volker; seated are: Casper Schutte, HyeonWoo Lee, Jason Kim, Nicola Mouton, Taryn Staples, Andrew van Dyk, Marco Meyer and Anton Gollia.

Vir meer inligting of navrae bel vir Jannie du Toit by 072 473 2420.

Silly season survival skills Counsellor Rudyard Harrison of the Ruach Counselling Centre suggests the following survival skills for the silly season: 1. Practice saying “no” or “can I come back to you?” when asked to make a donation; attend an event or indulge your child. 2. Apply the K.I.S.S principle to entertaining. Keep It Small and Simple. 3. Be on the lookout for unrealistic expectations of yourself, others and events. Christmas is a day on

the calendar like any other. 4. Get sufficient rest and exercise. Have a detox day here and there. 5. Limit obligations and where possible take a break from normal routine activities. 6. Accept and ask for help. 7. Have the courage to deviate from tradition. 8. Create magic and fun where you can. 9. Balance. Balance. Balance. 10. Know that whatever it is, it is temporary.

GREEN FINGERS: The Early Childhood classes of the International School of the Helderberg had a lovely trip to the garden centre in Heritage Park, which was incorporated with their educational theme, “In the garden”. The children have been preparing their own little garden at school and have been planting flow ers and vegetables as part of learning about how things grow. With them at the garden centre is Johan Badenhorst, nursery manager.

REACHING OUT: Joel Finnie, a Year 6 learner at the International School of the Helderberg, delivered an impressive speech about home less people in Somerset West re cently. Joel made an appeal to fel low learners and encouraged ev eryone to contribute deodorants, which he will then distribute to homeless people.

Ronelle van Loggerenberg captured this affec tionate moment between two cheetahs in the Kgalagadi Park, which won the “Making the Most of the Moment” category.

PROUD WINNERS: After three months of preliminary rounds, the final category win ners for the Life in Full Focus photographic competition for Helderberg Hospice have been chosen. Superfoto sponsored the competition, which encouraged local photogra phers to look at life through fresh eyes. There were monthly prizes of photographic vouchers worth R500 and the top three prizes to the value of R2 000 each. The win ners with the sponsors are (from left) Aslam Gabier (Superfoto Somerset Mall), Patricia McNaught Davis (Helderberg Hospice) and finalists Ronelle van Loggerenberg, Erda Fer reira, Silvia Kirkman and Miems Kruger (Superfoto Waterstone Village).

Erda Ferreira’s late evening photo of a family of young boys fishing with their Dad clinched the winning prize for the “It’s the Little Things that Matter” category in the Life in Full Focus competition for Hel derberg Hospice.

Good kob and elf catches, tuna 30 miles off Cape Point Catches of elf were reported along our coastline earlier last week, but the strong South Easter and sudden changes of water temperature during the weekend resulted in patches of bubble seaweed off the Strand beaches making fishing difficult. Some anglers fishing from smaller craft and kayaks however reported good kob and elf catches from the Poort and Melk Bay areas. On Friday evening and Saturday morning Coby Toerien had his quota of kob and elf while fishing from his specially adapted fishing canoe. Many kob and elf were also caught and released last Thursday. Johan Uys and Johan Slabbert were successful in catching their quotas of elf. Johan was also fortunate enough catch two kob of 1,5 kg and 2 kg on Blinkwater reefs as well. The last leg of the Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association Offshore league was held on 30 November. The weather was good and the

main concentration of fish was 30 miles south west of Cape Point. A lot of the competition boats fought and lost big yellowfin tuna on 10 and 15 kg line. The top boat of the day was Relentless skippered by Daniel Hughes of Gordon’s Bay Boat Angling Club (GBBAC). Relentless also finished as top boat in the league. Team-member Connie Garstman was top angler of the day with a yellowfin of 47 kg. Delano Goldberg, also fishing on Relentless, landed a yellowfin of 44 kg and a longfin of 16,5 kg. Hughes had a longfin of 10,65 kg. The only other fisherman to land a yellowfin was Andrew Roxberg of Cape Boat and SkiBoat Club (CB&SBC) fishing on Wasabi. The final results of the competition are: 1. Cape Boat & Ski-Boat Club, 2. Gordon’s Bay Boat Angling Club and 3. Atlantic Boat Club. The top boat was Relentless (GBBC), second was Kiora (CB&SBC) and third Nenya (CB&SBC). The top angler was Delano Goldberg, and second Daniel Hu-

ghes both of GBBAC and third was Brian Fichat (CB&SBC). Pearly Beach shore-angling club held their monthly competition on Saturday. A total of 50 anglers entered the event which saw 13 anglers weigh a total of 169,9 kg of fish. Riaan Steyn won the competition with five kob and one white steenbras with a total weight of 35 kg. Second was Deon Strydom with five kob of 28 kg. Third was Barry Muller with four kob with a total weight of 22 kg. Fourth place went to Hannes Smuts with the largest kob of the day of 10,25 kg. Most fish were caught in the Brandfontein area. The Gordon’s Bay Rock and Surf Angling Club competition held on Saturday proved to be quite a success. Christo Botha fishing from Shark Rock and surrounding reefs tagged five kob with a total weight of 10,4 kg. Andries Myburgh was in second place with four kob weighing 6,4 kg from “Die Dam” area. Gerrit van Schalkwyk was third with one kob of 4,3 kg. How many fundis know that some species of octopi have three hearts? Killian leads SWCC to another victory Somerset West had a resounding innings and 23-run win against Kensington in their Division 1D two-day match played in Kensington on Saturday. Kensington resumed their second innings on day two on a shaky 58/5, requiring 67 runs to make SWCC bat again. The SWCC bowling attack was relentless and resumed where they left off the previous Saturday. They made light work of the remaining five wickets to bowl Kensington out for 82 before the first drinks break. Francois Kilian was the destroyer-in-chief once again, taking four of the five wickets for 23 runs off 14 overs. SWCC start their WPCA limited overs campaign away to Mannenberg this Saturday. Bellville secured a five-wicket win over a gutsy SWCC second team in their two-day match played at Radloff Park on Saturday. SWCC were on 68/4 and still 66 runs adrift of the Bellville first innings when the match resumed.

Andreas Schabort (links) se 30oorwinning oor sy broer Mikhail Schabort (regs) het hom die eerste plek in die mansafdeling verseker.

Skipper Sergio Hilario (59), Sean Davies (53) and PierreHenry Hurn (36) took the fight to the visitors to post a score of 248/10. This left Bellville a target of 114 runs needed to win the match. Although Bellville got into a spot of bother early on in their innings when they were on 50/5, they managed to steady the ship to win the match. Hurn was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 12-4-41. The SWCC third team travelled to Atlantis on Saturday but were no match for a rampant home side. SWCC batted first and only managed to score 55 runs in their innings. Jean Roux (19) fought valiantly before being undone by a snorter. Atlantis knocked off the runs with plenty of time to spare. Green Point beat the SWCC fourth team by nine wickets at Radloff Park on Saturday. SWCC lost the toss and were put in to bat. They struggled from the get go and were bowled out for 69. SWCC chairman Clinton Hale top scored with 22 against the much younger Green Point side.

Junior meisie skitter by Strand muurbalklubkampioenskappe

Charise word afgerig deur Gerard van Eden, wat afrigting by die klub sowel as by Hoërskool Strand behartig.

11 December, 2014 WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Lamees Daniels, a junior weightlifter from the Hottentots Holland Weightlift ing Club, will be one of the lifters in action at the club’s annual championships on Sat urday 13 December. The event will be held at the clubhouse on the corner of Church Street and Wesley Street in the Strand and starts at 11:00. These championships are also preparation for the juniors for the Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia Samoa and the African Games and Junior Af rican Championships in 2015.

HHCC score another innings victory

Hottentots Holland’s first team chalked up an innings and nine run win over Brooklyn Telkom on Saturday. HHCC batted first and scored 222/8 to which Brooklyn Telkom replied with 101. They were forced to follow on and were 33/5 at the close of play on day one. Brooklyn Telkom were all out for 112 in 45 overs in their second innings. The top bowlers for HHCC were: Cameron Mitchel 7-16-1, Abdul Aziz Temoor 1748-6, Riyaad Oliver 10-27-2 and Warren Martin 3-5-1. The third team played Old Mutual away and won the match by 16 runs.

HHCC lost the toss and were sent in to bat and scored 175/4. After drinks Ameer Oliver and Rasool Thomas put together a 116 runs partnership to take HHCC to 175/4. Top scorers were Rasool Thomas 72* and Ameer Oliver 63. HHCC restricted Old Mutual to 159/6. The best bowlers were Ameer Oliver 7-28-2, Abu Bakr Brinkhuis 7-26-1 and Rashiet Khan 7-32-1. This weekend HHCC play Belhar away in the one-day competition. On 16 December the first team will be at home against Nyanga. This will also be the club’s annual fund raiser.

Local clubs well placed in WP leagues I can’t believe it’s that time of the year again, with Christmas only two weeks away – this year really has flown by. On the local front our clubs have been performing well in the first half of the season and are all lying in favourable positions in their respective leagues coming up to the mid-season break. In the First Division B league Helderberg are currently in fifth place, but are only 10 points adrift of the second placed side with the same amount of wins and have got a good chance to close the gap and move into promotion territory. In the First Division D league Hottentots Holland, Somerset West and Macassar are all fighting it out to get into the top two spots, which will mean promotion. Hottentots Holland are currently in second place and have had a great run in the league thus far. There are only a handful of points separating them from the top side. Somerset West is in fourth spot, but only one win behind the league leaders and still have a great chance to climb into the top two.

Macassar are in seventh spot at the moment and two wins behind the leaders. They have got a bit of work to do, but a couple more wins will see them move up into promotion contention. All our clubs have played some great cricket during this first half of the season. They deserve the Christmas break, but will need to come out firing on all cylinders to keep the momentum going and get the second half of the season off to a good start. Next week sees the national age group weeks taking place all over the country. Many of the Helderberg’s primary and high school players will be taking part and we wish them all well. Here’s wishing everyone a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year. Have a great holiday and drive safely if you are travelling.

Good team effort steers Macassar to victory Macassar recorded a well-deserved 112 run win over Nyanga in their First Division D two-day away match on Saturday. Macassar started day two with a lead of 32 runs. Openers Shaun Jantjies and Dillon Japhta had an opening stand of 56 before Japhta was out for 24. Jantjies was caught in the covers for 42 and Ashwin Swartland (9) followed soon afterwards with the total on 82/3. Thomas Kemp and Quinton Bowman then tried to run quick singles, but Bowman was hit on the wrist trying to pull a beamer and retired hurt on 7*. Kemp followed on 10 (99/4). Julian Fortuin and Rowayne Sinden took the attack to Nyanga with a brilliant fifth-wicket partnership of 85 before Sinden (52) was lbw (184/5). Chad Bailey and Shane Swartland also went cheaply 186/7. Bowman 14* returned and with Fortuin put together a 39-run eighth-wicket partnership to take the score to 224/8 before Fortuin (57) was out. Skipper Neil Swartland declared on 226/9 with 70 overs left in the day. Nyanga needed 253 to win and started out defensively, but they lost too many wickets and were on 65/6 at tea.

Shane Swartland was on song with some brilliant bowling for his 23-5-37. He was supported by captain Neil Swartland 8-2-20, David Sebastian 6-1-9, Julian Fortuin 12-1-51 and Shaun Jantjies 3-1-13 and Nyanga were bowled out for 140 in 51 overs. Hottentots Holland beat Macassar by six wickets in a one-day match at Gustrouw on Sunday. HHCC won the toss and elected to bowl first. Macassar’s batsmen struggled to get the ball off the square and wickets fell rapidly and Macassar were all out for 44 in 25 overs. The best bowlers for HHCC were R Oliver 4-312 , A Temoor 4-2-6, C Mitchell 5-1-14, G Moller 5-1-0 and R Rhoda 3-2-1. HHCC got off to a slow start but reached the target in the 18th over on 45/4. The best bowlers for Macassar were Julian Fortuin 9-2-18 and Shane Swatland 9-2-22. Macassar’s second team continued their winning streak beating Sir Lowry’s Pass (SLP) in an away match by five wickets for their ninth consecutive win. SLP claimed the toss and batted first and were all out for 87 in 22 overs. Macassar’s top bowlers were R Abrahams 5-3-13, R Hendricks 6-2-8, C van Graan 5-3-3 and W Hendricks 5-2-19. Macassar scored 88/5 in 31 overs.

Bowlers pulverise Pinelands

Helderberg finished their final league match of 2014 with an impressive 177 run win over Pinelands thanks to a brilliant spell of bowling by veteran stalwart Vincent Castle.

Helderberg resumed their second innings on 118/2 after scoring 83 runs in their first innings to which Pinelands responded with 91 all out. Gary John Sylvester and Leneal Treziers were the batsmen at the crease when the game restarted in Pinelands on Saturday morning. Sylvester reached his 50 in the first over of the morning but then lost his wicket five overs later with his score on 60. Larry Morkel (47) and Treziers (55) took the score to 211 when Treziers lost his wicket before lunch. Helderberg were eventually bowled out for 240 just after lunch leaving Pinelands a total of 232 to win with 70 overs left to bat. The Pinelands openers got their team off to an aggressive start but superb bowling from Castle (5/19) saw Pinelands falter to 55/10 to give Helderberg a 177 run win. Castle was ably assisted by Cody Davids (2/36) and Larry Morkel (2/0). Helderberg’s second team beat hosts Mitchell’s Plain by 10 wickets on Saturday. Helderberg lost the toss and were sent in to bat and an unbeaten 100 runs by Owen Thomas, who was well supported by J Cyster (37) and S Fredericks (33) took their total to 221/5. Mitchell’s Plain were under pressure from the first ball and were all out for 121. The best bowlers were Cyster 2-31, Fredericks 3-25 and L Whitting 2-12. Mitchell’s Plain were forced to follow on, but were soon in trouble and eventually all out for just 100 runs. This meant that Helderberg needed only one run to secure the win. Match bowling figures of 7/43 and 33 runs by Fredericks earned him the man of the match award. After this impressive win, the team will be able to take a well deserved break before they take on Bishop Lavis in the new year.
