PLAASLIKE STRANDE: 16 000 BESOEKERS OP NUWEJAARSDAG

Morsjorse los strande in ‘vieslike’ toestand

DELIAH BRINKHUIS

. Vrae ná verdrinking in Strand JAMEY GORDON

) The Somerset West Police are investigating a case of murder after a 58-year-old man was shot in the head during an attempted armed robbery in Somerset West on Christmas (25 December) evening. According to Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for the Somerset West Police, the incident occurred at 20:20. The armed robbers were caught in the act by the elderly man and his daughter, who had returned home after Christmas supper. A scuffle ensued and the man sustained a gunshot wound to head. The 58-year-old French national was transported to Mediclinic Vergelegen where he later died due to the severity of his injuries. No arrests have yet been made. Anyone with information can contact Detective Warrant Officer Carleigh Noemdo on 021 850 1310. ) A 38-year-old dad appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (6 January) on a charge of child abuse. According to Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for the Somerset West Police, a Metro police officer responded to a complaint that a two-year-old child was left unattended and locked inside a vehicle in the parking lot at Shoprite.

“Hy was die liefste kind. Hy wou ’n loopbaan in forensiese wetenskap volg.

Naudé is egter dieper die see ingetrek. On The Beach restaurant genader vir hulp.

Businesses beaming after festive spend JAMEY GORDON Although the festive season spend might have left many cash-strapped, Helderberg business owners received a welcome boost to their coffers. Business at The Mill House Kitchen at Lourensford Wine Estate has been booming since the start of November – and it hasn’t yet slowed down, says owner Bjorn Guido. The restaurant recently increased its capacity by 60 seats and even with the extra seats is struggling to keep up with demand. According to Guido, the restaurant remains fully booked for at least three or four weeks in advance. “We have no reason to complain,” laughs Guido. Bryan Schmaltz, assistant manager at the Stables Restaurant at Vergelegen Wine Estate, boasts that the restaurant has been and still remains fully booked for lunch since 10 December. Schmaltz says they have also welcomed a lot more walk-ins and large orders. Stables also introduced its Lazy Leisure period during which it extended its operating hours in the last two weeks of December. “During this time, and even after patrons had left after the lunch-hour rush, half our restaurant would still be full,” says Schmaltz. Charmaine Henn, manager of The Thirsty Oyster Restaurant at the Old Harbour in Gordon’s Bay, says they have been very busy during the festive season, with constant queues. She says on one occasion she noted 38 people waiting outside and in their vehicles to be seated. Henn, however, noticed that patrons – a nice mix of foreigners, Joh’burgers and locals – did not drink as much as in previous years. On the retail front, the festive cheer also kept tills ringing. Daphne Kriel, centre manager for Waterstone Village in Somerset West, says the cen-

tre did exceptionally well, exceeding their expectations. Kriel says 340 000 people came through the shopping centre during December alone. Although most shoppers who visited the centre at this time would recall the parking nightmare, Kriel assures that plans are in place to expand the parking area. Tommy Brink of the Reef Beach Café in Beach Road Strand says business was booming to such an extent that he was forced to close shop early on 2 January when he had run out of stock. Brink says no number of visi-

tors can be too many for the area. Shameem Wasili, manager of KFC Beach Road, is ecstatic about their sales on New Year’s Day. Wasili says she had 35 staff on duty, instead of the normal 12 staff members, and there were queues inside and outside the fast food outlet throughout the day. Vasco Das Neves of the well-known Pop-In Café in Gordon’s Bay is happy about the number of holidaymakers that visited the town. “There were plenty of people; beaches were tjok en blok full. It’s excellent, it’s the only way that I can exist,” Das Neves said.

BEST NEW YEAR’S GIFT: Blanche Matondo Diatezua of Strand boasts here with her lit tle baby boy, Peace, who was one of five babies born on New Year’s Day at the Macassar health care facility’s ma ternity ward. The first baby girl was born at 00:58, followed by another girl and three boys. A baby boy was al so born at Medi clinic Vergelegen.

VEGETATION BLAZE STUBBED: Smoke bil lowed along Old Sir Low ry’s Pass Road towards Somerset West on Tuesday due to a veld fire. Fire fighters battled for more than six hours to bring a vegetation fire in the vi cinity of the Pistol Range under control. Sharon Bosch, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Services, says the fire broke out at 13:50. Ac cording to Bosch, addi tional firefighters were dispatched to bring the fire under control at 19:40. She said the fire brigade remained on scene throughout the night and was still monitoring the area Wednesday morning just before 08:00.

Mail Live outside yourself this year At the start of each new year, resolutions are drawn up – we undertake to quit smoking, lose weight, join a gym or live a healthier lifestyle. But a couple of weeks after these vows are made, they recede into memory. Instead of the usual resolutions this year, why not decide to get involved in your community to make a difference? Join the neighbourhood watch, start a feeding scheme, coach a junior soccer team or attend community meetings to highlight concerns. So much more can be achieved if everyone joins hands.

Thanks for caring about our dogs, but... I am pre-empting a possible report about us leaving our dogs in the car at the Virgin Active car park on Saturday 3 January at about 12:00. It was a mild cloudy day, but the car was nevertheless parked under a tree. Three of the four windows had been left partially open, two at about 60 mm and one at about 120 mm. The car was left unlocked. When we returned from shopping 20 minutes later, the car guard reported that when our parking neighbours returned to their vehicle, our dogs began barking, as they do when they feel they need to protect their master’s possessions. These people apparently thought the dogs were barking because they had been locked in the car! They then proceeded to note down our licence plate number and involved the car guard in their observation, saying they were going to report us. On our return the dogs were sitting quietly, as they always do when waiting for us – except when somebody comes near our car! We appreciate our “parking lot neighbours” being concerned about our dogs’ welfare, but we would like to assure them that we would never leave our dogs in the car without open windows, nor would we leave them in the car if it were a hot day. But we thank them for caring.

LETTERS A message to town leaders New Year’s Day – what a lovely day it was; what a ghastly day it was. Please don’t read anything into the following words other than what is written and don’t read this as a blow to our lawmen. They do whatever they can under the given circumstances. Now that we have experienced another “filthy” New Year’s Day in our beautiful dorp – for the umpteenth time – we must now act. Elected managers of our town, hear this and listen good. Be proactive. We have seen so many times that handling any kind of situation reactively results in a loselose situation. Therefore, being reactive does not work. Now it is time to be proactive. And the only way it will work next time, is by getting the following in place: ) Determine the number of legal parking bays in Beach and De Beers Roads, as well as the little connecting roads. That is the number of vehicles that can be accommodated; the rest is overflow and should be shown away. Have strategic booms set up with lawmen handling the flow. This message needs to be advertised months before a New Year’s Day to prevent any point of uncertainty. First come; first served. ) A parking space in any of said allocated parking areas need to be priced per car to generate additional income to cover the costs of cleaning up the beachgoers’ filth afterwards. Payment

can be made when entering at a boom. ) Enforce a ban on all buses and taxis, except in two strategic places, such as the golf course and station. [These can become] drop-off places and buses and taxis need to vacate to a pre-determined parking area such as a school ground or municipal open space. ) A smaller fee per adult, payable at the station by train users and the bus drop-off zones, must be raised before any individual is allowed on the beach. ) Camping and enjoying the day will be restricted to the beach – the white sand and grass areas along the seaside of Beach Road only. Having just these five rules in place will put authorities in a proactive position to monitor, police and create an environment for everyone to enjoy a wonderful beach day. It will free up the congestion, minimalise the filth and keep beachgoers on the beach – and out of any private residence driveways and off pavements. Please elected officials in charge of our dorp, we are fed-up with the unacceptable fiasco year after year. If you cannot get it right, appoint someone who can, but just do it. Be the managers you were elected to be. I am looking forward to a lovely clean New Year’s Day next year.

CHRISTO THOMSON STRAND

Locals about holiday visitors Many locals avoid beaches during the festive season. It’s just an unpleasant battle for space on the roads and beaches, they feel. On the other hand, there’s no better signal that it’s holiday season than when a line of cars moving slowly down Beach Road belts out the latest hits through open windows. And the monetary injection is also welcome. We spoke to some locals for their views.

ZABIAN SWARTS (Strand): Visitors to the area are good for tourism and the economy. However, there should be more control, as people bring their own food and – sometimes – wea pons as well. The visitors create a fes tive atmosphere; I feel like a different person during this season. PHOTOS: TAS-

MIN CUPIDO

NICHOLAS GILBERT (Gordon’s Bay): Peo ple who visit the ar ea often bring their own food and do not support local businesses. Locals prefer to remain in their homes, because visitors occupy the area. The number of visitors to the beach should be regulated, so that it is not so packed. As a busi ness owner, I noticed people only entered when they needed to use the bathroom fa cilities and ended up leaving it in a mess.

Dit was ongerieflik vir plaas like mense.

FANIE KRUGER (Strand): The festive season was fine; there were not as many visitors as in previous years. I think the wind blew people away. I be lieve something should be done to control the use of al cohol on beaches, as people do not watch their children when they are intoxicated.

CHRISNA OTTO (Gordonsbaai): Dit was ’n besige Kers seisoen.

DEIDRE VAN DER MERWE (Somerset Wes): Dit was chao ties, maar stiller as vorige jare.

PHIRDOUZE TELHO (Strand): On New Year’s Day, the trains were really full; it was very scary. I worked at a store in Somerset Mall over the holiday period, so I saw a definite increase in shoppers during this time.

Nóg ’n swaargewig is Ton Vosloo. . Woordfees vind van 6 tot 15 Maart plaas.

Lady Luck turned her back on locals Marc Gleed (pilot) and Wiltas Leeuwner (co-pilot), racing in the Pro Stock class in the Brent Oil sponsored boat, during this year’s Trans Agulhas Inflatable Boat Challenge. Gleed says they broke two floorboards, ruptured a petrol tank and also had their car keys and cellphones stolen during the course of the race. The 800km race, which started in Plettenberg Bay on Sunday 28 December and finished on Strand Beach on Thursday 1 January, saw 30 boats in competition. The first mishap occurred 60km into the race, near the Knysna Heads, when one of the boat’s floorboards broke. This forced them to take the boat through the heads then rush to their base in Mossel Bay, where they replaced the floorboard before being able to compete in the surf race. On the leg from Mossel Bay to Stilbaai they were doing well and were among the top-six boats and third in their class, when they noticed fuel in the boat near the Gourits River Mouth. “I looked down at the fuel bladder and saw it had ruptured; there was fuel all over the boat. To make matters worse we had also broken an-

other floorboard. We managed to limp into Stilbaai and repair the boat before the stage to Struisbaai,” Gleed says. In rough waters the next day they ran close to the shore and made up good time without any problems. The pair had another good clear run and finished second in their class at the overnight stop at Hawston Beach. That night their vehicle’s keys and cellphones were stolen and someone had to drive back to Somerset West in another vehicle to get spare keys. On the final day from Hawston to Strand, the weather looked good but they experienced strong winds all the way to Pringle Bay. From there, the water was flat all the way to Strand. Gleed and Leeuwner finished third in their class in the longhaul on the final day, second in the surf race, fourth overall and second overall in the surf. “Considering all the bad luck, we were pleased with our overall position. This was my fourth Agulhas and the first time I had problems with fuel tanks and floor boards breaking,” Gleed says. He thanked race organisers, the team’s sponsors and officials for the outstanding job they did controlling spectators and traffic at the finish at Strand Beach.

Boat anglers catch big yellowfin tunny on the south side of Cape Point I would like to wish all anglers and readers a prosperous and successful 2015. Our local beaches have had a fair share of visitors and anglers this season. Anglers are often frustrated at this time of the year, as they find it difficult to find parking and a fishing space during the day. Most locals fishing from the shore and reefs generally fish during the early morning and evenings when the slightly cooler southerly wind drives most of the bathers and visitors away. There have been reports of fairly

good catches of smaller kob, just size (50cm) and slightly larger, while numerous undersized kob have been returned to the water. Keen local spinner men have often had their quotas of elf, while a number of just size leerfish (garrick) of 70cm were captured and released. Jurie van Niekerk, a regular reef angler, also caught the odd geelbek (Morocco size) and a few dassie, up to 1,8kg. Jurie also mentioned that he and his partner, while wading to the reefs, observed a number of massive stingrays in the shallow water near Strand Beach.

He warned reef anglers to be on the lookout for these rays and be careful when wading to and from reefs, as well as when jumping off the reef to wade to the shore or shallower reef when the water rose. Stingrays are often lured nearer to the reefs when smelling the bait and fish hanging on stringers behind the anglers. Ferdi Joubert, who was on holiday in Pearly Beach, said there were plenty of visitors and anglers in that area and only a few kob and steenbras were caught from 1 January. He mentioned that Pearly Beach’s shore angling club will hold its monthly competition on Saturday (10 January). Riaan Steyn, fishing with Hannes Smuts and Christoffel Botha (Jan) at Rietfontein and Die Dam areas, said fishing was generally quiet, but

last weekend good catches of kob were reported. He added that after the strong water subsided over the weekend, there were also good catches of yellowtail. The same was reported at Struisbaai after the rough seas calmed down. Last Friday evening there were reports of good catches of geelbek by commercial and recreational boats in Simon’s Town. Earl Fenwick, who fished for yellowtail off Cape Point in the Bellows area on Sunday, said he caught only one yellowtail and one katonkel. He stated that at 25 fathoms there was a distinct thermo climb that registered on his echo sounder. This phenomenon is always indicated by a red line. Earl further explained that this thermo climb is possibly the reason

that shoals of fish like yellowtail, geelbek and kob are driven closer inshore. Well known charter boat skipper Alan du Plessis said that there were good catches of yellowfin tunny taken on the south side of Cape Point at the Canyon on Sunday. He, Jason Jooste and other crew members had nine yellowfin tunny all in the 40kg and 50kg class aboard. Also doing well in the same area on Sunday was Patrick Christodoulou on Magoofta. Sam Brown, who was catching tunny from a commercial vessel on the north side of Hout Bay on Sunday, reported the catching and releasing of a 60kg black marlin. TOUCH RUGBY SERIES: H’BERG’S SCORE LIVING LEGENDS MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW

Team rewrites Touchies history The Helderberg based Score Living Legends rugby team made touch rugby history in December when they lifted the National All Gold Hot Summer of Touch rugby tournament trophy for the second consecutive year. No other team in the history of this popular touch rugby tournament has ever managed to achieve this impressive feat. This is especially pleasing for this team, many of whom travelled in the back of a bakkie to participate in this event in 2008. That year the players did not have a sponsor and had to camp in a tent near the different venues and used their prize money, gleaned from winning different stages, to buy food. The following year the team received a sponsorship and went on to win the tournament. Manager/coach Nigel Phillips believes touch rugby has really gone from strength to strength in the Helderberg, as six of the top teams competing in this year’s tournament were from the area. These teams are: Score Living Legends, Reds, Dwergies, Pacific Blue, Hawaiians and the Drifters.

Michael la Meyer, Christopher Josephs, Harry Fingers and Zandé de Klerk were not present when the photo was taken. PHOTO: THYS LOMBARD The tournament kicked off in Camps Bay on 14 December and ended on 31 December in Hartenbos. The Score Living Legends won five of the seven legs of the tournament and played in two semi-finals.

Their road to the title was as follows: 14 December – Camps Bay (semi-finals), 16 December – Strand (winners), 21 December – Onrus Beach (winners), 23 December Struisbaai (semi-finals), 26 December –

Stilbaai (winners), 29 December – Diaz Beach (winners) and 31 December – Hartenbos (winners). Phillips says the superb captaincy and leadership of Fabian Philander kept the team focussed during

all seven stages of the event. He adds that the hard work, many hours of practise and dedication by all the team members led to their success. He further thanks everyone who helped in preparing the team for the tournament, especially Morne Adams, Armien Bailey and sponsors Score Energy Drink, Le Roux Conradie and former international tennis star Björn Borg for their unfailing support. As a result of the team’s success, Phillips says, they plan to participate in a number of Sevens tournaments around the Cape this season to see how they will fare. The Score Living Legends team members are: Fabian Philander, Patrick van Wyk, Nazeem Wood, Harry Fingers, Christopher Josephs, Michael la Meyer, Franco Oktober (all from St Georges), Bradley Mentoor (Helderberg RFC), Nannie Latief (Strand Secondary), Zandé de Klerk (no club), and Ashwill Gordon (Springbok Touch Rugby player).
