SIR LOWRY’S PASS: MAYOR SAYS PROGRESS WAS MADE – ‘BUT SADLY NOT ENOUGH

‘Too little, too late’ JAMEY GORDON

“How many accidents must still occur and lives be lost before anything is done about the danger on that road? Why is there not an emergency stopping lane or gravel pit on the road?” These are questions asked by Sonja and Wynand Cillié after the death of their son, Wynand (22), following a tragic accident on the N2 at the foot of the Sir Lowry’s Pass on Saturday morning (see page 3). At 08:45, a truck crashed into six vehicles stationed at the traffic light intersection after its brakes had apparently failed. It was the second accident of its kind to occur at this intersection in the space of two years. In September 2012, 25-year-old Thelana Kotze, a teacher from Stellenbosch, was killed when her small Nis-

san bakkie landed under the wheels of a heavy-duty truck that crashed into her when its brakes also apparently failed. Her vehicle was dragged 100 m before the truck came to a halt. The roadway in question is the responsibility of the Western Cape government. The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) this week confirmed to the DistrictMail that it is not responsible for this stretch of road, while the City of Cape Town highlighted how it has engaged with the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works in an effort to find a solution. The Western Cape government did not say whether an emergency stop lane would be implemented on the road, but that they are investigating safety improvement interventions at the specific intersection. Stuart Pringle, chairperson of the local subcouncil, Subcouncil 8, told

DistrictMail that the subcouncil took it upon itself to meet directly with the provincial government on at least two occasions. “As chairperson of the subcouncil I have had numerous follow up consultations with the Mayco Member for Transport as his directorate had taken the lead in dealing with this matter.” DistrictMail has a copy of minutes to a subcouncil meeting in March this year noting that letters were addressed to the provincial and national departments of transport in October 2013 to request that an arrestor bed be installed at the bottom of Sir Lowry’s Pass to accommodate “possible run-away heavy vehicles”. Brett Herron, the City’s Mayco Member for Transport, said that the Western Cape government has indicated that it planned to instruct consulting engineers at a meeting this week to proceed with an investiga-

tion into an arrestor bed. According to him, the provincial government had developed a plan for an arrestor bed on land belonging to Sanral. But this arrestor bed was to have been positioned about 1 km from the intersection and the proposal was abandoned at a meeting with Sanral in October this year so that the government could investigate a new location closer to the intersection. Herron says improvements were recently implemented to the timing of the traffic lights to reduce the likelihood of accidents at this intersection. “A mechanism has also been added to the traffic signal to detect any vehicle that is descending the pass and approaching the intersection at too high a speed to stop at the red signal. When such a vehicle is detected, the signal will remain red for all approaches for asufficient period to allow the vehicle to pass through the intersection be-

fore other traffic is given a green signal to enter,” says Herron. “While this mechanism is useful if a runaway truck is detected at the end of the green phase on the N2, it provides no protection if the truck approaches the intersection during one of the other signal phases – as happened on Saturday.” On Wednesday morning, Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille offered her sympathy during a council sitting to the victims, family and friends affected by the collision. In her address, she said the City has “done what it is able to do, while engaging seriously with provincial government and Sanral to get them to play their part, and progress had been made, but sadly not enough at the time to prevent the tragedy”. A Facebook-page was started earlier this week to get a petition going to make Sir Lowry’s Pass safer.

Girl (17) shot in Chris Nissen Park A teenager from Chris Nissen Park is recovering after a shooting on Saturday 22 November. Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for the Somerset West Police, said the 17-year-old girl and a friend were walking in Titanium Street at about 02:40 when the shooting happened. Jantjies said three men allegedly approached the couple and opened fire on them, wounding the girl in the upper leg. The men then fled in the direction of Lwandle. Jantjies said the shooting may be related to an armed house robbery that happened in Copper Street a few minutes earlier. According to Jantjies the homeowner was woken up by the sound of a door opening. Seconds later he was confronted in his bedroom by a man pointing a firearm at him. “Close your eyes, or I will kill you,” the intruder allegedly demanded. Two more men, one with a firearm and another armed with a knife, entered the bedroom. They ransacked his cupboards before going to a second bedroom where his children were sleeping. Jantjies said the intruders fled with cellphones and two pairs of shoes. Police are investigating cases of a house robbery and attempted murder. Anyone with information can phone Warrant-Officer James Robertson on 021 850 1370.

Strand Community Policing Forum AGM The Strand Community Policing Forum (CPF) will be holding its AGM on 29 January. All organisations within the Strand policing precinct are invited to register with the CPF to be able to participate in the AGM. The due date for registration is Monday 29 December. The meeting will be held in the Broadlands Park Community Hall at 19:00.

Armed robbers leave empty-handed CASSY VAN EEDEN The Vodacom franchise in the Helderberg Walk Village shopping centre in Main Road, Somerset West has become the most recent target of an armed business robbery. According to police, two men visiting the shop on Tuesday 2 December enquired about purchasing iPhones. They were shortly followed by another two men, who were armed. According to Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, the staff and customers in the shop “began to shout and scream hysterically”. Jantjies says that the four men attempted to force the people inside the store to be quiet and when they were not successful, they fled the scene in a charcoal Volkswagen GTI. Although security personnel on

the scene said that the men had taken cellphones, the police have confirmed that the robbers left before stealing anything. No injuries were reported. This is the first armed robbery in Main Road since August this year, when a spate of armed robberies at businesses seemed to have come to an end. Since the beginning of the year Markham, Mr Price, American Swiss (which was hit twice), Telkom, Legit, Mojo’s and Truworths stores in Main Road all fell victim to armed robberies. This is also the 16th armed robbery in Somerset West this year that the DistrictMail has reported on. A case of attempted business robbery is being investigated. Anyone with information pertaining to the case can contact Detective Warrant Officer Yolandi Te Bearts on 021 850 1344.

“Sy dood is nog so onwerklik.

So vertel Sandra Thomas van Macassar wie se seun, Rajacques, verlede Woensdagaand in Macassar doodgeskiet is. Sandra se man, Karel, is 20 November 2010 vermoor. Yongi Moqose (43) is in a stable condition in the Tygerberg Hospital after surviving a collision with a truck on the N2 on Wednesday 26 November (“Man trapped in burning vehicle”, DistrictMail, 27 November). The white one-ton Hyundai bakkie that Moqose was driving, smashed into the back of a stationary 26-wheeler truck at the robots at the Somerset West Business Park on the N2. Moqose, who is from Khayelitsha, was en route to fetch bricks for the company he works for when the accident occurred. According to a police report, the driver and passenger of the 26-wheelerwent to investigate after

feeling the impact of the crash. They found Moqose unconscious in his seat and bleeding profusely. They immediately contacted emergency services. Moqose was trapped in his vehicle after the accident and paramedics had to administer medical care to him through the broken windows. Fire and Rescue personnel who also attended the scene eventually freed him using the jaws of life. He was then rushed to hospital in a critical but stable condition, said Tygerberg Hospital spokesperson Laticia Pienaar. Pienaar says he was admitted with severe multiple injuries and is still being treated. Moqose has worked as a

driver for the company in Cape Town for over 12 years. A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened and is being investigated by the Lwandle Police, says spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama. The DistrictMail initially reported that the bakkie caught alight after the impact, as reported by the Somerset West Police. However, Liezl Moodie, spokesperson for Western Cape Fire and Rescue, said they had no record of a fire occurring on the scene.

News that parking in Gordon’s Bay and a large part of Beach Road, Strand is now free was welcomed by businesses in the towns. The City of Cape Town announced on Tuesday this week that it has amended its contract with Ace Parking, the service provider for the Helderberg. The amendment now allows for free public parking throughout Gordon’s Bay and parts of Beach Road, Strand and is effective from 1 December. Parking in the Strand and Somerset West central business districts (CBDs) will remain managed parking and charged at R2 per 15 minutes. The only parking bays in Beach Road that will not be free are the bays situated within the CBD between Van Riebeeck and Van der Merwe Streets. This includes the parking at the Strand Pavilion. Dorette Bassil, a committee member of the Strand Ratepayers Association, says this is great news for tourism in Strand. She says it will make Strand Beach much more attractive for tourists. She added it will also address a secondary problem created during the holiday season when holiday makers parked in side streets and blocked entrances to driveways. Bassil says the City should look at doing the same for the CBDs to encourage people to shop in these areas. Danie Miller, chairperson of the Gordon’s Bay Business Forum, also welcomed the announcement and said businesses in Gordon’s Bay, especially those on the beach front, have been requesting free parking for quite some time. He said that previously people were charged when making a quick stop to buy bread or the newspaper. He believes the free parking will have a very positive effect on the town and its tourism businesses.

Waterkloof not zoned to operate a restaurant JAMEY GORDON Besides operating without a liquor license, the upmarket Waterkloof restaurant and estate in Sir Lowry’s Pass Road also does not have the appropriate zoning to operate a restaurant. According to councillor Johan van der Merwe, Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Environmental and Spatial Planning for the City of Cape Town, Waterkloof Estate applied for consent use for tourist facilities in August 2005. The consent use approval was, however, conditional and limited the tourist facilities to private wine tasting only. The approval does not provide for a restaurant, public wine tasting facility or function venue. The estate currently operates an upmarket restaurant with seating for 120 guests. It is because the required land use rights for the restaurant were not in place that a liquor licence could also not be obtained, says Councillor Van der Merwe. Van der Merwe says in order for Waterkloof Estate to operate a restaurant, public wine tasting facility and offer a function venue, the existing consent approval has to be amended. “The required amendment application was recently submitted and is in the process of being finalised. The application was advertised to the adjacent property owners and all the owners indicated that they have no objection to the restaurant, wine tasting or function venue,” says Van der Merwe. Van der Merwe added that until the current approval is amended as applied for, the estate may not continue with any activities that fall outside their current land use rights for the property. “A notice was served on the restaurant,

which will be duly processed, irrespective of them having submitted an application for amended consent use, as they did operate without the required approvals,” says Van der Merwe. Waterkloof is still operating a restaurant, though, and advises patrons to take along their own alcoholic beverages until the matter is resolved. Three employees were arrested on Thursday 23 October when Somerset West Police discovered that the restaurant was selling alcohol without a liquor license. The employees were released on a warning to appear in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on 24 November. The outcome of the court appearance could not be obtained before going to print. Claudia Young-Kelly, sales and marketing manager for the restaurant, previously told DistrictMail that the restaurant’s holding company, False Bay Vineyards (Pty) Ltd, applied for two liquor licenses in 2008 – one for the manufacture and wholesale distribution of wine, and the other for the restaurant. However, she said that for various reasons, these licenses were not issued by the Western Cape Liquor Authority. False Bay Vineyards has since approached the Western Cape High Court for urgent interim relief to rectify the situation and the matter was heard on 7 November. According to Young-Kelly, the court has since ordered that the restaurant’s micro producer’s license be issued immediately, and the liquor license be reviewed by the Western Cape Liquor Control Board within five working days, following the submission of further necessary documentation requested by them. Young-Kelly says the documentation can, however, only be supplied once negotiations with the Somerset West Municipality have been finalised.

Missing man found in Macassar CASSY VAN EEDEN Daniel Keith, who has been missing for more than 14 days, has been found. Last week the DistrictMail reported (“Epilepsy sufferer goes missing from hospital” – 27 November) that the 53-year-old man had gone missing after leaving his bed at Helderberg Hospital. On Monday (1 December) night at around 22:00, a paramedic spotted him in

Macassar, apparently near the beach, says his relative Lucille Keith. She says that when he was found, he was extremely hungry and tired but was in good health. However, he has been unable to tell them what happened to him or what the last 14 days have been like. Keith, from Grabouw, was being treated at the hospital after collapsing after an epileptic fit.

The DistrictMail reported last week that Daniel Keith had gone missing while being treat ed at Helderberg Hospital. He has since been found.

Picnic party leaves bitter after-taste TAMSYN JANTJIES A business owner is upset at having to clean up after a “sea of bottles and cartons” was left behind by party-goers who attended the Afrotainment Summer party picnic at De Beers Soccer Field in Somerset West this past Sunday. The owner of the nearby business along the R44 said it took her and one of her staff members an hour to clean up the mess of bottles, boxes and used condoms on Monday morning. They filled five black bags. One of the staff members said a taxi full of people held an impromptu after-party on a patch of grass on their premises in the early hours of Monday morning. She said they were throwing empty bottles around until the early hours of the morning. Staff members decided to call their security company as the gathered crowd made them feel uneasy. The clean-up crew for the event were on site on Monday morning at the De Beers Soccer Club and were still cleaning the fields when DistrictMail went there at about 10:00. The mess along the R44 was not cleaned up, though, and many residents blew off steam on the Somerset West group Facebook page. One Facebook user commented that matriculants had held their after-party at the same

grounds and there was no mess or spill-over outside the premises. Another stated that if this is what happens after such a big event, neighbouring businesses should object to there being any further events of this kind. Allan Winter, chairperson of the De Beers Soccer Club says, the club received the field back in the same condition it had been in before the event. “But maybe we as the club and

also the organisers should have put out more bins for people to deposit their rubbish in,’’ he said. ‘‘Going forward we should probably ask ourselves what we can do to prevent this from happening again,” he added. The summer party picnic, held from 11:00 on Sunday morning and ending at 20:00 on Sunday night, was organised by a company called Synergy Events and had about 5 400 people attending. It featured DJ Tira and Big Nuz, well-known artists on the house scene. Ticket prices ranged from R160 to R300. The organisers of the event said that to their knowledge, no impromptu after-parties were held outside the premises or along the R44. Tchavdar Nakon, one of the organisers, said ‘‘I took a drive around the area myself to see if there was anything out of the ordinary happening but didn’t see anything’’. He left the sports field at about 04:00 in the morning and still did not see anyone partying on any of the neighbouring business premises. Tchavdar says the mess is to be expected after an event of this size, which is why they arranged for the clean-up crew to clean up the premises on Monday morning. He said that the crew also had to clean up De Beers Avenue, which leads into the De Beers Soccer Club.

NODDY TIME AGAIN: The annual Noddy Party starts today (Thursday) at Vergelegen Estate. The party has been running for more than 30 years and is a welfare project of the Somer set West Round Table 31. The children’s party, hosted by Noddy, includes a brass band and runs from 19:00 to 21:00 and ends on Saturday 13 December. Tickets, from R55 to R75, can be bought online at www.noddy.org.za or at the Indigo Spur at Waterstone Village, daily from 08:00 to 22:00.

Mail Solid action is needed Vigorous action is required for an emergency truck stop at the foot of Sir Lowry’s Pass on the N2 following Saturday’s devastating accident. The question on many people’s lips, though, is why the road did not have an emergency stop lane to start off with? Also, following the very tragic death of a young teacher in 2012, why does the road still not have an emergency stop lane for trucks? The provincial government – responsible for the road – failed to answer the question of whether or not an emergency stopping lane would be installed on the road, but merely said that safety improvement interventions are being “investigated”. With two young lives lost, the circumstances require a far more forceful and determined response indicating exactly what the safety improvement interventions are and when they will be implemented.

This 1999 silver Audi was damaged in a hit and run accident during morning peak hour traffic in Main Road, Somer set West, on 7 November. See letter be low for more information.

Peak hour hit and run A hit and run took place in Main Road, Somerset West, on 7 November between the Links Garage and Two Oaks guest house. A white Hilux bakkie rammed into a 1999 silver Audi from behind during morning peak hour traffic, causing serious damage. After having hit the car the driver of the bakkie sped away. Several municipal workers witnessed the incident. If anyone saw the vehicle or man fleeing the scene and has any useful detail regarding the vehicle, please inform the Somerset West police or Nina Potgieter on 021 852 1328/082 920 8783.

‘Swallows’ want to know why visa laws have changed We are “swallows” and for the past seven years have come to Somerset West for 180 days. This year we booked our tickets on 7 July 2014 to come here on 4 November until 28 April 2015. When we arrived we were told that the law had changed on 24 May and that we could no longer extend our visas for another 90 days, as we had done in previous years. We checked your official website and it still stated that we should go to our nearest Home Affairs Office, which in our case is in Paarl. We did so and were advised by them that they no longer did the extensions and we would have to use an agent to get an extension, which we have done. We are now awaiting an appointment to go to the appointed government agent, but we are told that they are very busy. To compound matters further there would appear to be an error on the exit date stamp on my husband’s passport which was written as 2/2/2014 instead of 2015, which means that he would have

to leave South Africa before he arrived. Our agency advised that we should return to immigration at the airport and have it corrected, but when we did we were told that this could not be done but would show correctly on immigration records. We are part of a retired non political sector that has been bringing our foreign currency here every year, for the past seven years and had planned to continue doing so. During that time we have bought a house and paid rates and given employment to local people. I have worked with children in a local township, mentored two teenage boys from another township, we have supported the local Street People’s Centre by providing soup. We also paid to have a domestic worker retrained to become a geriatric carer, at which she is now employed. We bring baby clothes from the UK for the poor babies born at the local hospital. As older people we are now faced with the stress of the uncertainty

Voortreflike diens by Klere Dokter Dis darem so lekker om by ’n besigheid in te stap waar die personeel uit hul pad gaan om jou behulpsaam te wees. So was my ondervinding by Klere Dokter langs PEP Stores in die Strand.

to not knowing whether we can extend our visas another 90 days or whether we have to leave after 90 days and buy new tickets, using money which could have been spent here. Like other “swallows”, we wonder if it is worthwhile keeping a house here if we can only stay for 90 days. For us it is a 25/30 hour journey from our part of the UK. There is much disquiet, even anger at this unnecessary and costly restriction in the “swallows” communities. We just cannot understand why we are being discouraged from coming to your beautiful country and bringing much needed benefit to it, contributing much and taking nothing but memories. Would The Honourable Mr Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Economic Development and Mr Derek Hanekom, Minister of Tourism care to comment? We would very much appreciate your advice and comments.

Granny deemed a security risk Dear Mr van Eeden You are not alone as I too was deemed a security risk at Waterstone – I had sunglasses on! I was body blocked by the ‘polite guard’ and refused entry. When I bypassed him, the second one was ready to apprehend me. As a sixtyfive-year-old grey haired granny I guess I was a real threat. I do not accept under any circumstances the rhetoric about the safety of the tenants and shoppers. If the management had done their security protocols correctly in the first place there would probably never have been an incident and subsequently the need for this rubbish.

HAT festival: good fun for a good cause The 2014 HAT (Helping Animals Together) Festival held at Hathersage Farm in Somerset West on Sunday was a huge success. The festival is in aid of animal welfare in and around the Helderberg to help raise funds for medical expenses of stray animals and animals in underprivileged communities. Various musicians, including: Akkedis, Joint State and Craig Vee, performed at the event. DistrictMail ran a photo booth on the day, with all proceeds donated to HAT. Vet at your service

Philwest in Somerset West hosted a joint wine tasting function with Old Mutual on Tuesday last week. Around 80 guests attended.

Cottage Vet Clinic has been serving the Gordon’s Bay community for over a decade. In June this year, the clinic entered a new and exciting phase with Doctors Morné and Ingrid de Wet taking over as management. Cottage Vet Clinic has a new vision to serve the pets of Gordon’s Bay holistically. Their services include: • Consultations and vaccinations • Routine surgery, for example sterilisations • Advanced surgery including growth removals, intestinal and bladder surgery • Orthopaedic surgery • In-house digital X-rays (important for breeders to exclude hip and elbow dysplasia) • In-house diagnostic ultrasound • In-house laboratory facility • Hospital facility with a qualified veterinary nurse • Grooming services • Weight loss clinic • Dental clinic • Pre-anaesthetic blood tests (to make anaesthesia as safe as possible) • Wing and nail clipping for birds

The event was also held to showcase a range of new Volkswagen vehicles to prospective clients. Philwest hosts this event once a month, but owner Alan Davison says this event was by far the most successful. International motoring journalist Richard Wiley delivered a presentation on the new Volkswagen CC sedan. Guests were treated to eats and a selection of wines from the Flagstone Winery.

John and Lorna Megraw, Bobby Campbell, Richard Loos and Louraine and Dieter Reck attended the event where the new range of Volkswagen motor vehicles was showcased.

Jill Lewis and Carol and Ron nie Vader at tended the event, where international motoring jour nalist Richard Wiley spoke about a new range of Volks wagen vehi cles. HELPING HANDS: Die liefdadigheids organisasie Helping Hands het op 27 No vember hul jaarlikse jaar eindfunksie in die Strand stadsaal ge hou. Vanjaar het hulle 380 bejaardes daarheen genooi. Hulle on dersteun Rusthof se bejaardes van alle denominasies.

Load shedding bad RUBRIEK news for businesses Sewe gewoontes van suksesvolle afgetredenes CASSY VAN EEDEN Over the past two weekends some Helderberg businesses have been forced to close their doors and even turn customers away due to load shedding. During stage two load shedding, the Helderberg area faced power cuts on Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:30. Pieter Schoohoven, owner of BudgetMeatandBiltonginGordon’sBay, says load shedding has hit his pocket hard. Schoohoven said his butchery lost two major compressors, that operate his fridges, due to load shedding. Without his fridges operating, he lost a large volume of products that he could have sold. Yeolandré de Beer, owner of The Spot hair salon in Somerset West,

says the power cuts have had a big impact on her and her employees. “We can’t do blowdries when the power is off. The beautician cannot use her machines and clients phone to cancel appointments.” She says her seven stylists and her beautician have experienced a massive loss of income on the days that there have been electricity cuts. Gerd Laschoak, owner of The Saturday Sale Shop in Michael’s Arcade, Somerset West, says his store only trades on Saturdays and for the past two Saturdays he has not been able to trade at all. “It really affects my turnover,” he says, “I end up losing money because I rent the space for the day and then I can’t sell anything. It’s very inconvenient.” Lisa-Marie Bodington, owner of Creaxion Engineering, a stainless steel furniture manufacturer in Somerset West, says her business has faced a detrimental knock as a result of the load shedding. She says her company simply cannot function without electricity as all her equipment is electrical. “No work equals no sales, and no sales equals no income,” she says. Daantjie Malan, chairperson of the Helderberg Sakekamer, says the accommodation industry is taking the biggesthitwhenitcomestoloadshedding. He says if load shedding continues into the festive period, businesses will face a massive loss. Danie Miller, chairperson of the Gordon’s Bay Business Chamber, says load shedding is affecting everyone, particularly businesses that preserve and prepare food.

We are all deeply touched and saddened by the unexpected passing away of Wynand, eldest son of our principal, Wynand Cillié, and his wife, Sonja and brother of Charl. We believe that our Heavenly Father will enfold you in His love and fill you with His grace, not only today, but every day in the difficult time that lies ahead.

Time travelling with the ‘Mail The front page of the District Mail on 6 December in 1974 carried the newspaper’s first ever colour photograph. The photograph is of the Christmas light display in Somerset West Main Road. The accompanying story opens: “As Somerset West’s Mayor, Councillor J.A.E. (“Bertie”) Kotze, pressed a switch outside the Town Hall on Tuesday night, more than 5 000 coloured lamps transformed Main Street and its environs

into a scintillating pageant of light.” The story continues that residents became emotional at the scene. The front page also adds that Strand was also going to have a light display in Beach Road. However, not on same scale as the one in Somerset West. History truly repeats itself in the Helderberg as this article is quite similar to a edition of the DistrictMail published last month about the Festival of Lights in Somerset West. An advert for Pick n Pay on the

front page advertises 865 g Christmas puddings for R1.05, a 3.062 g tin of yellow cling peaches for R1.19 and Cape King frozen turkeys for 87 cents per kilogram. Page 3 carries an article with suggestions for Christmas gifts for specific people like married couples for under R2, such as recipe books and dinner sets. Mo men do it for Hospice Now that November (prostate cancer awareness month) is over, what are all the Mo-men doing with their newly acquired moustaches? Niel Lategan and Kristian Martin-Dominguez, two South African men in London, take pride in being able to donate a significant amount of money to Helderberg Hospice. Both lost close family members to cancer in the past few years and believe that the skilled and specialist care of Hospice made a significant difference to their loved ones when they needed it most.

They launched an appeal among colleagues at the Northern Trust Group in London and word spread to international branches. As their moustaches grew, so did donations, and by the end of the month they had £1000 from offices as far away as Dublin, Chicago and Bangalore! Niel and Kristian have now issued a challenge to Helderberg moustacios to support Helderberg Hospice in the same way. If you would like to take up the challenge, contact Patricia at Helderberg Hospice on 021-852 4608.

Massive patches of anchovy at Blake’s, Tunny ‘dik’ at the Canyon The long-awaited elf season is now officially open and with previous reports of elf all along our coast it is very welcome indeed. Shore anglers fishing for kob on the Strand reefs reported the presence of massive black patches of anchovy, that were observed very close to shore in the shallows off Blake’s beach. A number of these small anchovies were even washed up onto the beach. As long as these small schools of bait fish remain in our area it could provide good spinning season for all anglers, both novices and crack spinner men. Anglers fishing from small crafts and kayaks using floating Rapalas and small spinners are usually very successful with elf catches at this time of the year. Fly-fishing from kayaks, the beach and the reefs could also be excellent options. On Sunday evening a number of

size kob were caught from Blake’s beach which was the same area where a number of leerfish were caught and returned to the sea – most of the fish were in the 70 to 80 cm class. A Gordon’s Bay Angling Club member, Henry Oelofse, reported catching a 7 kg kob at Macassar beach on Saturday. Angling club members of the Gordon’s Bay, Betty’s Bay and Pearly Beach shore angling clubs are reminded of the shore-angling competition to be held on Saturday. A report from a local boatman was that snoek fishing was been sporadic last Saturday and Sunday. He said that he only managed to catch a few snoek on each trip. These past months

snoek have been scarce and expensive. Good news from Jason Jooste, skipper of Tyler was that on Sunday he and his crew had a number of yellowfin tunny aboard their boat. The best fish weighed 90 kg. The fish was caught from the Canyon area. Jooste also mentioned that Alan du Plessis skippering Lynx in the Canyon area on Sunday had six yellowfin tunny aboard his craft with the best fish weighing up to 85 kg. He also mentioned there were many other craft in the area on Saturday and Sunday and most of the boats had between three to six fish on board. Somerset Sport recently received

stock both of 30 and 20 size Rapalas. Among the new colours in stock are pink mackerel, sail fish wha-who and clowns. They also received a number of smaller Rapalas both sinking and floating. On Sunday there was also a Western Province offshore boating competition. Most of the club boats were fishing in the deep at the Canyon area. The club anglers were using only 10 kg and 15 kg line. One of the anglers fishing in the competition said that at times it was difficult to fight the very large yellow fin tunny which were over 100 kg. The heaviest tunny caught by a professional on Sunday was a yellowfin tunny of 104 kg caught by a professional angler. Emile le Roux on Vislus had six yellowfin tunny between 50 kg to 90 kg aboard. He said that he and his crew boated one fish in the morning

and the rest in the afternoon. One of his crew members boated a 90 kg fish in 25 minutes and strangely enough, it took a second crew member 50 minutes to subdue a 45 kg fish. Le Roux said that at one stage there were 15 boats in the vicinity. He added that a number of boats that hooked fish late in the afternoon stayed in the area right through the night to fish early on Monday morning. He also mentioned that there were a few long-liner fishing vessels in the Canyon area on Sunday. The presence of these big fishing vessels help keep the tunny in the vicinity. A lady angler boated a 70 kg yellowfin on Sunday while fishing from a ski-boat in the Canyon area. Macassar find the going tough against Nyanga

Macassar start the second innings of their match against Nyanga this Saturday with a narrow lead of 32 runs. Macassar skipper Neil Swartland won the toss in this First Division D two day away match and elected to bat first. They lost their first wicket on 17/1 when Shaun Jantjies was dismissed for 9. Dillon Japhta (20) followed with the score on 32/2. Ashwin Swartland and Quinton Bowman consolidated the innings with a third wicket 70 run partnership to go to lunch on 101/2 in the 38th over, with Swartland on 33* and Bowman 34*. Bowman was dismissed off the fourth ball after lunch and Julian Fortuin just after him. Ashwin Swartland (46), Rowayne Sinden (29) and Thomas Kemp (27) took the total to 170/7 in 51 overs. Macassar stretched the score to 199/9 in the 60 overs with Shane Swartland 13, David Sebastian 7* and Neil Swartland 3*. Macassar’s opening bowler, Julian Fortuin, ripped through Nyanga’s first five batsmen to have them reeling at 45/5 at the tea break. After tea Nyanga batsman M Tyilo (54)

and W Bobeni (39) kept Macassar in the field and three dropped by Macassar added to their woes. Skipper Neil Swartland then came into the attack and took two vital wickets to dismiss Nyanga for 173 runs in 54 overs. Chad Bailey 1/23 and Shaun Jantjies 1/18 also bowled well. A sad, sad day for cricket fraternity It was truly a sad day for the cricket world when Phillip Hughes passed away last week after being hit on the head by a cricket ball during a Sheffield Shield game. Even though the incident happened in Australia, it has had a profound effect on cricketers all over the world. Although it was an accident, it is a sombre reminder of just what can go wrong on the cricket field. I suppose there will be a closer look at cricket helmets now, but Hughes was wearing a helmet at the time and the fact of the matter is that it was an accident. Looking at the footage, Hughes seemed to have got his timing slightly wrong and was a touch early on the hook shot. On another day he would probably have smashed that same ball to the boundary. The helmet is a very important piece of equipment. In fact it is vital. There are laws in place, especially at school cricket level, that children must bat wearing a helmet; the wicket keeper must also wear a helmet when stand-

Armand Burger (WP u. 11), Juan Burger (WP u. 13 Invitational) and Anri Grobbelaar (WP u. 19 women’s team) were recently selected to represent Wester Province Cricket at various levels. Armand will be playing in Worcester, Juan in Bloemfontein and Anri will be play ing in Nelspruit.

ing up to the batsman (who will forget Mark Boucher’s freak accident that cut his international career short) as must any fielder standing close to the batsman. Let’s not forget that although cricket is a “gentleman’s game” it is still dangerous. It reminds me of Omar Henry’s story when he was still playing cricket in Scotland. In an attempt to recruit more cricket players in Scotland, Omar invited a number of Scottish soccer players to watch them in the nets and to try and convert a few of them to the game of cricket. The soccer players had said, before watching the net practice, that cricket was for “softies”. However, after watching batsmen face deliveries of over 130 km/h, they quickly changed their minds and showed more respect and agreed cricket was a bit too dangerous for them. It does not matter what level of cricket you play, it still takes an immense amount of skill to face fast bowling. Your concentration and your timing have to be spot on or you could risk being seriously hurt. Ask any cricket player of any age, and they will tell you stories of getting hurt – it’s just the nature of the game. One must also spare a thought for poor Sean Abbott, the bowler who was bowling at Hughes at the time of the accident. A fast bowler’s job is to unsettle the batsman and ultimately get him out, but no one would ever dream of deliberately doing something like this. Abbott will no doubt be badly affected by this incident and will need a lot of support. There is even talk about having a re-look at short-pitched deliveries, but they can’t change that, bouncers by fast bowlers are a part of the game. Cricketers play the game (or any sport for that matter) because of their of love the game. It is, however, important that sportsmen and women respect the game that they love, because accidents can happen. RIP Phillip Hughes.

SWCC lost the toss and were put in to bat. Runs were initially hard to come by, as the Kensington attack bowled a defensive line wide of the off stump. A solid third-wicket partnership of 84 between Bobby Londt (59) and Steven Southey (56) took the score to 126 after 47 overs. Abri du Plessis finished off the innings with a cameo of 18 runs off 18 balls to boost SWCC to 182/5 in their 60 overs. SWCC’s opening bowlers, Dean Vincent and Francois Kilian, destroyed the Kensington top order to have them at 16/5. SWCC then released the pressure with indifferent bowling before first-change bowler Michael Osborn restored the order with figures of 5-0-11-5 to bowl Kensington out for 57 runs. The best bowlers were Vincent 7-0-14-2 and Kilian 8-0-23-3. Skipper Southey then enforced the follow-on and Kensington ended the day on 58/5 after 32 overs. They need 67 runs to make SWCC bat again and SWCC need five wickets to wrap up the match. James Wilshere bowled well returning figures of 10-0-14-3. SWCC second team resume their second innings in their match against Bellville at home on Saturday on 68/4, 66 runs short of making Bellville bat again. The fourth team played Bergvliet at home and won the match off the last ball. SWCC showed an “impressive” mix of experience and youth, with Andy Boyd playing with his son Bradley for the first time. Bergvliet posted 167 in 35 overs. Jacque Engelbrecht 7-0-20-4, and Bradley

KRIEKET: AFDELING EEN B

Judith is the new Women’s World Champion

11111111-DP041214

Judith Hanekom of the Somerset West Croquet Club is the new women’s World Champion in Golf Croquet. She has just returned from Cairo, Egypt where she played in the Women’s World Golf Croquet Championships. After qualifying for the knockout stage, she proceeded to beat three world-class Egyptian players on her way to the final. She played Jenny Clarke of New Zealand in the final and in

a close best of five final became the new world champ. Prior to this match, Clarke was the best female croquet player in the world in both Association and Golf Croquet. South Africa now holds both the World Open (Reg Bamford) and the World Women’s titles, an amazing achievement for a country with around 20 active clubs compared to the hundreds of clubs in many of the other croquet playing countries of the world.
