Thank you for you support and interest in the newsletter. To date the four editions have received 5999 views and 2939 reads averaging 5 minutes or longer. It is encouraging that the number of ’clicks’ to our side links is 161. We have readers from all over the world.

For the first time this conference was a combined Rotary/Rotaract event.

We heard from some outstanding Rotarians including Steven Sundstrom, our Regional Grants Officer who

D9810 contributes to The Rotary Foundation

N

ovember is Foundation Month and what better way than to congratulate every Rotarian and friends of Rotary by recognizing the achievements we have supported

over the 2021-22 year.

Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. Each year, The Rotary Foundation has an amazing impact through District and Global Grants and this year, Disaster Response in Ukraine.

D9810 contributed USD$197 per Rotarian to win the Ian Riseley Cup for Zone 8.

For those unaware of the significance of taking this trophy, Zone 8 includes Rotary Clubs in Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Tonga and Vanuatu.

Sometimes we forget the ‘International’ component of being members of ROTARY INTERNATIONAL..

We can become locally focused and miss the global opportunities to deliver humanitarian service beyond addressing our local needs. We all know our local needs are important.

But in remembering the theme of Past Rotary International President Ian Riseley to ‘Make a difference’ in the world’ we need to think international. “You can't change things on a world scale through a local community project”. And Rotary is an option to give you that capacity to change the world This is how our money is spent —>

Introducing Conference Speakers Professor Brett Sutton

Brett is Victoria's Chief Health Officer. The Chief Health Officer undertakes a variety of statutory functions under health and foodrelated legislation. He also provides expert clinical and scientific advice and leadership on issues impacting public health.

Professor Sutton has extensive experience

and clinical expertise in public health and communicable diseases, gained through emergency medicine and field-based international work, including in Afghanistan and Timor-Leste. He represents Victoria on a number of key national bodies including the AHPPC (Australian Health Protection Principal Committee). He is also Chief Human Biosecurity Officer for Victoria. Professor Sutton has a keen interest in tropical medicine and the incorporation of palliative care practice into humanitarian responses.

Professor Sutton is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health, a Fellow of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine and a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM). He is also a member of the Faculty of Travel Medicine.

Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM

Dinesh was the first quadriplegic medical intern in Queensland. Dinesh is a doctor, lawyer, disability advocate, and researcher.

Halfway through medical school, he was involved in a motor vehicle accident that caused a cervical spinal cord injury. Dinesh has completed an Advanced Clerkship in Radiology at the Harvard University.

Dinesh works in the emergency department at the Gold Coast University Hospital. He is a senior lecturer at the Griffith University and adjunct research fellow at the Menzies Health Institute of Queensland. Dinesh is a researcher in spinal cord injury. He is a doctor for the Gold Coast Titans physical disability rugby team.

Dinesh is a senior advisor to the Disability Royal Commission. He is an ambassador to the Human Rights Commission’s Includeability program. He was a 2021 International Day of People with Disability ambassador. He is a founding member of Doctors with Disabilities Australia.

Dinesh was the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service’s Junior Doctor of the Year in 2018. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2019. He was the third Australian to be awarded a Henry Viscardi Achievement Award. He was the 2021 Griffith University Young Alumnus of the Year. Dinesh was the Queensland Australian of the Year for 2021. In 2022, Dinesh was listed as number 33 in the Courier Mail’s top 100 power list for Queensland’s most influential in health

and wellbeing. His autobiography, Stronger, was published by Pan Macmillan in 2022.

Thirdly, as the program has grown it has been responsive to changes in the community. For instance, as roads have improved, patients have been able to come to the clinic rather than needing home visits, and the service has expanded to the nearby township. The program also seeks and responds to feedback from the communities it serves by holding yard meetings. Lastly, the amount of money provided in Australian dollars can go a long way when converted into Bangladeshi currency.

At a recent SHEBA fundraising event, an eminent member of the Bangladeshi community, noted in his keynote address that it is unfortunate that basic health care, which should be the domain of Government, is not available to many in Bangladesh. We can feel proud that SHEBA, with the support of Rotary, is able to step up and provide this most basic human requirement.

Rotary Club of Mont Albert & Surrey Hills

Annual Mince Pie Fundraiser T

he Rotary Club of Mont Albert & Surrey Hills major fundraiser is selling of fruit mince pies . This has been a huge fundraiser over the years.

$3 per dozen will be donated to “End Polio Now” in your club’s name.

The mince pies are baked at Bread Street Bakery a small bakery in Hamilton Street, Mont Albert. The bakery is owned by David Winter. David is a member of the club.

It’s a hands-on project with members of the club assisting with baking and packing the pies. Clubs are welcome to place an order by submitting the order form (download from HERE) and can nominate a delivery date for the pies.

Alternatively you can get your supplies at the Whitehorse Farmers Market in Nunawading on either Sunday 13 November or 11 December… But they sell out early!

The pies have a very good reputation and when we set up a stall at the Whitehorse Farmer’s Market in November and December, they practically sell themselves, The shelf life of the pies is a few months which makes them very handy when unexpected guests call in. They also freeze well.

Malaria Elimination-DONATE

M

alaria is one of the oldest known diseases on Earth. It's also one of the deadliest killer diseases in the world despite a multitude of global efforts to decrease the mortality

rates.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.

In 2020, there were an estimated 241 million cases of malaria worldwide.

The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 627 000 in 2020.

Eliminating malaria requires all the nations it afflicts to have a comprehensive and integrated strategy, commencing with a detailed budgeted national plan . However, the plan is just the starting point. It is crucial that the leaders need to empower their respective agencies and officials to orchestrate the coordination needed to implement and sustain the plan.

It is vital that Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Net Work (APMLN) and joint Secretariats support national malaria programs and produce the evidence and innovation critical to

eliminating malaria.

They monitor opportunities, bottlenecks, and achievements, compiling them into a Leaders Dashboard of country-level progress reviewed annually at a Senior Officials Meeting to determine what course of action each country needs to take to meet the goal of eliminating malaria by 2030.

Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA) Dashboard 2021 Efforts must track whether countries have the resources they need and help formulate policies that coordinate across ministries and facilitate cooperation, whether bilateral, sub-regional or regional.

Two years of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in far-reaching changes to global health and development efforts against the most confronting challenges . Our malaria is no exception.

When the pandemic originally took hold in Asia Pacific there were many concerns.

However, two years on and it remains too early to know the aggregate impact of the pandemic on the collaborative elimination trajectory.

Nonetheless the partnerships across the Asia Pacific have found more hope than despair.

Many countries including Timor Leste , Vanuatu and Vietnam have reported zero indigenous malaria deaths in 2020, as well as reducing malaria cases and deaths by at least 40% by 2020.

At the same time, some countries in the region including Papua New Guinea, have seen a rise in malaria cases of 16%.However, we celebrate the positives!

D9810 is fund raising for Vanuatu with partners, including through; indoor residual spraying surveillance and data management training 2.5 billon people are at risk of malaria with children and pregnant women most at risk.
