It was reported today that the ’Spangles’ were rehearsing for their upcoming GIG and Rtn. Catherine Elfick ‘the lead Kid’ was bundled into a waiting Police car. The Police car was on fun duty at the Emerald Market.

Eye witnesses stated the she immediately began pressing buttons in the vehicle, turning on the lights and siren. Her face was beaming with excitement. Thankfully Catherine was removed from the vehicle to a loud cheer from the Market stallholders. The noise had stopped.

SO MANY DISASTERS, SO MANY NEED
I am sure that the recent and ongoing disasters around the world have touched us all. The war in the Ukraine, floods in Pakistan, New Zealand and at home in Australia, and the Earthquake in Turkey and Syria that has caused a shocking 50,000+ deaths
Our Rotary Foundation is working hard to assist where the need is greatest. This is the Rotary Foundation that your Club supports and that a number of Rotarians support as Paul Harris Society members, Centurions or individual donors. The need is greatand continues to grow. If you can review your level of giving and where possible increase your involvement in what should be, as a Rotarian, your “Charity of Choice “ you know that your donation will be well managed and used to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
Our District 9810 Foundation projects 2022/23 to date includes:
The UKRAINE –We are in the 2nd draft for a Global Grantto assist with emergency housing US$18,000 total
TURKEY: We are sending USD $10,000 from District Dedicated Funds (DDF) to District 2430 in Turkey so they have the option of initiating a GlobalGrant (effectively, USD$18,000 contribution matched at 80%).

Rotary club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central and Rotary club of Rochester, Victoria
December 2022
Merry Christmas to the kids at Rochester.

Rotary takes up the call to help bring cheer to
Our project began well before the floods hit Rochester. Our rotaryClub, in partnership with

After exhausting offers to gift the bikes to major charities, the owner Elaine Brodie contacted our Club to see if we could use them; otherwise, they were being disposedof in the landfill.

Immediately we thought that there must be kids in country areaswho would love a bike. With the lease at the traffic school forcing imminent closure, storage became an issue.
The recent floods in upper and central Victorian towns that dotted the river systems have been well reported in news cycles. So many families lost their homes and possessions and were displaced without a roof or belongings. Country towns faced devastation at a joyous time of the year, Christmas.
Several Bentleigh Moorabbin Central Rotary Club members, including one Scout, made the trip to Rochester to deliver and hand out the bikes.

What a great afternoon as Rotary delivered cheer to a much-needed town. It was an emotional afternoon as we proceeded to hand out bikes to the local children, who were so excited to receivea bike. Many of the children's bikes had previously floated away in the floods. Over 60 bikes were transported and handed over to children on the day, and another 20 tricycles for younger children were donated to the local childcare centre.
The children attended with Mum and Dad and chose their bikes. The look of surprise and pleasure on both parents and children's faces made the entire project more than worthwhile.
Rotary and its network helped us considerably. We thank Simon Wheelton, Rotary Club of Box Hill/Burwood, for supplying the budget rental truck ata highly discounted price for our use and for his cooperation in assisting us in bringing this project to fruition.
Thanks also to Colin at Budget Truck rentals, Highett depot, forexceptional service and assistance- going beyond the call of duty and helping us to make this project happen.
A fantastic partnership between Rotary clubs, Scouts, and local businesses that ticked all the boxes of a community engagement and flood relief project.

In November 2022 a rural health clinic was officially opened in a rural community in Zimbabwe south of Bulawayo near the Botswana border. Theproject was the initiative of the RC of Borken in Germany from a need identified back in 2016. Local residents had to walk up to 20 kms to attend the nearest medical clinic. The opening marked the successful completion of a global grant project by RCs Borkenand Bulawayo South. The project involved three further Rotary Clubs, RC of Plumtreein Zimbabwe, the Doncaster Club in Melbourne who receiveda District Grant to assist in the cost of transporting a container of medical equipment from the DIK Warehouse in Footscray, the RotaryClub of Alresford in England in paying for the land freight component and the RC of Plumtree which is the closest Rotary Club to Gambu.
Former Doncaster Club President Niranjan Ramjee who immigrated from Bulawayo in 2001, was quoted as saying: “This is a great example of the power of Rotary with five Rotary Club’s from four different countries coming together to truly make a positive difference to others lives who are less fortunate than ourselves”.

Gambu Rural Health Clinic

Together with the local RC Bulawayo South and the local health authorities, the RC of Borken project raised$215,000 to support the training of nurses inGermany and to equip the clinic with medical equipment. The new clinic was notonly qualifiedfor general medical, outpatient treatment, but also asa centre for obstetrics and baby care, dental treatment and ENT medicine. In addition, infrastructure for the storage of medicines and for the supply ofenergy and internet via satellite could be created. A high-quality Internet connection enables, for example, telemedical support and further training of employees via Zoom from Germany.

At the ceremonial handover of the clinic to the people of Gambu, thelocal chief, an employee of the health authority and spokesman for the local population, acknowledged the commitment of the initiator and the Rotary Clubs. The health minister and deputy prime minister were personally present atthe opening.
Every day, 40-50 patients are treated for minor or severe injuries, respiratory diseases or childhood illnessesor were advised, for example, onHIV medication, birth control or pregnancy. The Gambu Rural Health Centre is a successful project of the global Rotary ActionGroup for Reproductive Maternal and ChildHealth.
In December 2019, members of Doncaster Club helped selectand loadmedical equipment and consumables plus secondhand children’s books and school desks into a 20’ container at the DIK (Donations in Kind) warehouse in West Footscray.

The books and desks were for a library in a community centre inBulawayo. Since 2013 the Club has been working with the RC of Bulawayo South to support the education of
AIDS orphans through scholarships, books for the small community library and school materials. The community centre is where the AIDS orphans meet each week to do their homework, engage incultural and social activities and read library books in a safe environment. Doncaster Club received a District Grant to assist in the cost of transporting the container from Australia to Zimbabwe.
