Iam the child of Migrants, and a Migrant myself, but while my culture isGreek/ Egyptian, and my stomach is that as well - my home and my heart are in the hills of the Dandenong’s.
I have had a truly blessed life -with work that I have been doing for 38 years and that I amstill passionate about. But then I am also passionate about my bees, my super large vegie garden, and the wildlife that I share my 6 acres with – well, except perhaps the deer.
I have a wonderful family of adult children, who turned outalright - all that worrying for nothing, and at last a grandchild, to cherish.
Oh, and Rotary. Next year I will celebrate my 20th anniversary as aRotarian, at the Rotary club of Emerald and District-home of this year’s Governor -weloveyouKen .

Rotary Clubs celebrated Queen Elizabeth II’s passing by getting dirty at Puffing Billy Railway. Called up at the lastminute to save the day, this was a true reflection of Rotarians volunteering when needed. PBR had received 60 tonnes of dirty coal, and needed us to remove rock and slate to help PBR through the long weekend as it couldn’tget a clean load before the long weekend - about 30% of the coal was compromised. How? - PBR doesn’t yet know. PBR’s CEO Peter Abbot volunteered with us, along with a staffer Andrew making us earn our coffees. It was a load of coal fun over 3 hours, and a few members even asked if we could come back next week to do some more. By the time you’re reading this we might just have! Andrew providedus with a tour of the workshopafterwards too, which was a bonus. It was also an opportunity for a couple of our cluster clubs to work togetherwith an organisation our Clubs do plenty with including Puffing Billy’s Great Train Race and Emerald & District’s Kids Fun Run With Thomas. I don’t know about the rest of the members, but I certainly felt I’d had a good work out over the next couple of days.
We are making great progress towards eradicating polio, however recent news reminds us that polio anywhere is a threat everywhere.Polio is being detected around the world in places where it hasn’t been found in decades. In the United States, an unvaccinated man was paralyzed by polio. In the UK, poliovirus has been detected in sewage samples. In Malawi, a child contracted polio. And Mozambique announced its first polio outbreak of wildpoliovirus in 30 years.
The time for urgent action is now. A new vaccine has been deployed to stop outbreaks. Malawi, Mozambique, and nearby countries are conducting immunization campaigns to stop the spread of the virus. With our partners and advocates like you, we continue to encourage communities worldwide to provide vaccinations.
As we approach World Polio Day, 24 October, you canhelp us make an impact and stop the spread of polio. You can take action by:
Creating a fundraiser for PolioPlus using Raise for Rotary (in Australian, Canadian, or U.S. dollars)
Creating a fundraiser on the End Polio Now Facebook page
Raising awareness by sharing content from the World Polio Day Toolkit, which you can find on our World Polio Day webpage
World Polio Day will help us provide the resources needed to protect children from the U.S. to Mozambique and around the world. Join us so that no child suffers the paralyzing effects of polio ever again.
Sincerely,
The Rotary FoundationThe Whitehorse Art Show has grown from a local community event in 1970 to now being one of the longest running Art Shows in Victoria, with some 500 to 700 original works on display each year.
The Whitehorse Art Show will this year attract well between 900-1000 visitors during its four days, in addition to the many guests atour opening night dinner.
The Rotary Club of Box Hill Burwood has been running the Art Show since 1964.
Funds raised by the Whitehorse Art Show are totally used for a variety of community projects within the City of Whitehorse.
The show will display work from more than 150 local and regional artists from all over Victoria, with painting sales well in excess of $35,000 each year. Since 2018 the Art Show now also has a photographic section.
The Art Show conceptwas the brainchild ofone of the Rotarians of the day - Mr Ted Shaw, a physiotherapist. The initiation of the Art Show was framed in the form of a challenge to Ted by members of the Board to provide a list of 30 names of the local artists, who would exhibit their works.
Ted accepted the challenge and in no short order made a presentation to the Rotary Club Board, listing the name and addresses of the requisite number of artists.
Thus, the firstBox Hill Rotary Art Show was held – not in the Box Hill Town Hall as today's show is, buton the median strip in the Box Hill Shopping Centre- the area currently occupied by the tram terminus.
From humble beginnings the first Art Show was conducted in 1965 and remained at its original site for 24 years, before being brought inside to the Box Hill Town Hall in 1990.
Ted passed away in 2006, and is well remembered for his contributions to the Club and the Rotary District, but always as the father of the Box Hill Burwood Rotary Art Show
In 1994, Rotarian ColinJohnson and Past PresidentJohn Binns, both members of The Rotary Club of Box Hill, held discussions with Kath Mangan - daughter of Frederick McCubbin - and, as a result of these discussions, the Rotary Club was granted permission to strike the Frederick McCubbin medallion, which to this day remains the prestigious award presented to the artist whose workis judged “Best In Show”.
The 26th conferring of the award wasmade at the Rotary Club of Box Hill's 55th Anniversary Art Show conducted in November 2019
The Whitehorse Art Show continues to this day to offer the opportunity for artists to sell their paintings - upholdingthe tradition of the very first Art Showin 1965.
The Rotary Club of Box Hill Burwood is again proud to present theannualWhitehorse Art Show 2022 in the magnificent BoxHill Town Hall. The 2022 Art Show marks the 56th Annual Art Show held within theCity of Whitehorse and provides an outlet for quality artists to display and selltheir work.
The Box Hill Burwood Rotary Whitehorse Art Show will be held in The Box Hill Town Hall, 1022Whitehorse Road, Box Hill from Thursday 27 October to Sunday 30 October 2022. Ample parking is available in either the Town Hall grounds or in the immediate vicinity.
Tickets for the Opening Night Gala 3-course Dinner (including drinks) on Wednesday 26 October 2022 at 7pm willbe available from 1 September 2022. Ticket price is $85 per person. This includesa preview of the exhibition and firstoption to purchase anyexhibit.
An admission fee of $10 per person (payable at the door) will be charged to view the exhibition from Thursday 27 October to Sunday 30 October 2022. No charge for students or minors.
Without their generous support we would not be able to run this Conference.
