Natural Springs Water Filtration
IN PURIFICATION
It’s easy to take water quality for granted in countries with ample regulation and sophisticated filtering systems, but there are times when anyone, regardless of where they live, should take stock of the water in their homes.
Even though municipal water systems filter and test water supplies, some of the most common tap water impurities enter water sources after they have been tested at treatment facilities. Drinking water may contain small amounts of contaminants that are not unsafe to consume at certain levels. However, at higher lev els, these same substances can be problematic.
Contaminants can include hydrogen sulfide, raised acidic levels, arsenic, lead, nitrates, and microbiologicals, which include viruses, protozoan and parasites. Homeowners can take proactive approaches to test their water to determine if it contains potentially harmful levels of contaminants, which is especially crucial for those who rely on residential well water, which is not subject to the same testing as municipal systems.
One of the variables for individuals to consider is how long it’s been since they last tested the water quality in their homes. For those who have never done so, those who have done it but can’t recall precisely when or those who know it’s been more than a year since the last test, then it’s a good time to test the water. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends annual testing for coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH levels. The EPA notes this testing is especially important for anyone who is using a new well or has replaced or repaired pipes, pumps or the well casing.
According to the EPA, certain situations may call for testing the water supply, even if it’s provided by a public supply system. For example, the EPA recommends that expecting parents test their water supply for nitrates in the early months of a pregnancy. Testing should then be conducted again prior to bringing an infant home and once more during the first six months of the baby’s life. The EPA notes nitrate tests are best conducted in spring or summer after periods of rain.
An eye, taste and/or smell test can also indicate if the water supply should be tested. Water that stains, has an unusual taste and/or a conspicuous odor should be tested. In these instances, test for sulfate, chloride, iron, manganese, hardness, and corrosion.
A local chemical or fuel spill also should trigger a test of the water supply. The EPA notes that these tests can be expensive and recommends individuals
contact a local expert to determine which contaminants to test for.
Natural Springs Water Filtration in Richmond, which has been locally owned and operated since 1989, is an ideal choice for those wanting to test

Natural Springs Water Filtration offers water filtration installation, water filter system service and maintenance and reverse osmosis purification and understands “that having clean, safe water in your home is not a luxury but a necessity.”
Realizing that many people wait to purchase a high-quality water system until they save enough funds, Natural Springs Water Filtration offers appealing financing options for its customers and the filtration systems also come with lifetime and transferable warranties or the unit can move with the owner.
Additionally, it provides a team of skilled technicians for comprehensive service and regular maintenance of customers’ water filter systems.
“Whether it’s inspecting the system, replacing filters, or performing necessary repairs, we have the expertise to ensure that your water filter system is operating at peak performance,” the company stated. “We offer flexible service plans tailored to your needs, including regular check-ups and filter replacements.
Our goal is to maximize the lifespan and efficiency of your water filter system, giving you peace of mind and uninterrupted access to clean, filtered water.

What have been some of your most profound learning experiences while running your business?
KS: I have learned that your insights into the importance of attention to detail and personal relationships in business are profoundly accurate. Attention to detail ensures that your products or services meet the highest standards, fostering customer satisfaction and reducing the likelihood of errors that could damage your reputation. Meanwhile, nurturing personal relationships with clients and employees builds a foundation of trust. This trust is crucial, as it encourages loyalty, which, in turn, transforms customers into brand advocates who not only return for repeat business but also recommend your business to others. In essence, these loyal customers become ambassadors for your brand, amplifying its reach and contributing significantly to its growth.
How have you grown personally from being a business owner?
KS: Personally, I’ve grown to understand that the insight I have into the unique perspective I hold in my business goals is both profound and empowering. It’s true that no one else can fully grasp the intricacies and challenges you face behind the scenes, making it essential to always trust your vision and intuition. Each transition and period of change, while often accompanied by growing pains, serves as a catalyst for my learning and development. Embracing these challenges has not only strengthened my resilience but also continues to propel my business forward, nurturing innovation and adaptability. I’ve learned to constantly remind myself that growth is a journey, and every obstacle I have overcome adds to my story of success and perseverance.
What is most appealing about being a business owner?
KS: Being a business owner offers a unique blend of rewarding and fulfilling opportunities. At the
heart of it lies the ability to turn my vision into reality, shaping my business to reflect my personal goals and values. This journey has allowed me to carve out a work-life balance that suits my lifestyle, providing flexibility to prioritize what truly matters to me. Owning a business has also nurtured continuous personal and professional growth as I learn to navigate challenges and embrace innovation. It has unlocked the opportunity for me to make a lasting impact on my community, my employees, and our customers, creating a legacy that extends far beyond financial success. My role as a business owner not only enriches my life but also hopefully inspires those around me, making the journey as meaningful as the destination.
What qualities do you think business owners should possess?
KS: Maintaining a good work ethic and a solid heart are not only qualities I think business owners should possess, both are crucial foundations for success in any endeavor. These qualities ensure that you remain dedicated, honest, and persistent in your efforts. It’s important to keep your focus on your “dream” and understand your “why”—the core reason driving your ambitions. Having this clarity helps you stay motivated even when you are faced with challenges — and there will be many. I also believe a vital skill in today’s ever-changing world is the ability to adjust and adapt. The landscape of opportunities and obstacles is constantly shifting, and flexibility allows you to navigate these changes effectively. Being open to learning, embracing new experiences, and evolving with unknown circumstances ensures that you remain resilient and continue progressing toward your goals.
How does your business look different now vs. when you first started?
KS: Maven’s evolution over the years has indeed been remarkable. Quite honestly, I wish I reflected on this transformation more often. When I first started Maven Made Hair Co., my salon was just a cute and trendy space with a vision, but through dedication, innovation, and a commitment to excellence, it has blossomed into a thriving, sophis-
ticated, successful business. Key pivotal moments — such as introducing new services, embracing evolving industry trends, and building our luxury hair extension brand — have played crucial roles in our transformation. Maven’s ability to adapt to changing market demands and consistently prioritize customer satisfaction has solidified our reputation. Today, Maven stands as a testament to the power of growth and perseverance, reflecting the hard work and passion that have driven its success. My amazing team and stylists at Maven Made Hair Co. have played an instrumental role in the salon’s success. I say it all the time: I am nothing without my team. Each individual team member brings a unique set of skills and creativity, contributing to a fun and collaborative work environment that makes us operate more like family. This has not only grown the company’s reputation but also ensures that clients receive top-notch styling and personalized attention. As a result, Maven Made Hair Co. continues to thrive, setting new standards in the beauty industry.
What advice would you give new business owners?
KS: Get clear on your goals and understand your “why”. This is crucial for personal and professional growth. Knowing the underlying purpose behind what you do will help you maintain motivation and focus, especially when faced with challenges. Resist the temptation to take shortcuts on the important things, as shortcuts can often lead to compromised results and missed opportunities. Prioritize your well-being, as it provides the foundation for sustained success and fulfillment. The saying, “You cannot pour into others if your cup is empty,” emphasizes the importance of self-care. By ensuring your own needs are met, you are better equipped to support and inspire those around you, and it will make you a better leader. Also, rather than setting expectations, which can lead to disappointment, it’s more valuable to establish standards that guide your actions and decisions. Last, but not least, embrace the journey with a sense of fun and curiosity. Recognize that if you feel drawn to entrepreneurship, it will align with your capabilities. Trust in your calling and allow it to motivate you to reach your fullest potential.

Joyce Long Wellness Institute HEALTH IS WEALTH
Choice — that’s the message Joyce Long shares with her clients looking to grasp, maintain or enhance their overall wellness through natural modalities. Typically, she said, when someone receives a severe diagnosis, the first concept out of the window is choice.
A conventional medical doctor will often lay out options such as surgery or chemotherapy. However, at her facility, the Joyce Long Wellness Institute, “We give choice and offer education,” Long said. Nearly 31 years ago, Joyce Long received a diagnosis of third-stage brain, throat, and stomach cancer and was informed that she had a year to settle her affairs. That she had a year to live, and then she’d die.
“I told the doctor, ‘That’s not a good choice,’” Long recalled. So she made another decision — to continue through alternative and
VET VISIT TIPS
The earlier a pet is comfortable and acclimated to visiting the veterinarian, the better it will behave during each subsequent visit. The following are some steps pet owners can take to make vet visits go smoothly.
Handle your pet frequently. Teach your pet to accept touching of the paws, ears, mouth, tail, legs, and stomach. Regular sessions of petting and touching your pet may make him or her more comfortable when the vet has to do so.
Consider waiting outside. Research from Companion Animal Psychology says 30 percent of dogs are highly stressed while sitting in the waiting room of the vet’s office. It can be hectic in the waiting room, with lots of new smells, people coming in and out and animals with all sorts of energy. If waiting rooms put your pet on edge, wait outside.
Associate the carrier with comfort. If you pull out the crate only when the pet will be going to the vet, the animal will soon associate it with negative experiences. Instead, use the crate frequently and rely on treats so that the dog or cat sees it as a safe and fun space to spend its time. Take frequent car rides to different destinations so pets don’t associate car rides with vet visits.
Stay relaxed yourself. Pets can sense their owner’s energy. If you are worked up and anxious, then your animal may feed off of those feelings. By remaining calm, you can help keep your pet calm. Do a fun or practice visit. Acclimate the pet to the vet’s office with a trial run. This way he or she can interact with the vet and learn the smells and sounds under less stressful conditions. This is a great way for the pet to have a positive initial experience with its new vet.
natural medicines the benefits of Massage Therapy, Colonics, Lymphatic Drainage and additional alternative modalities, which she now makes available to her clients.
While the Joyce Long Wellness Institute does not prescribe or diagnose conditions, Long, who is a founding member and an I-ACT Member Certified in Colon Hydrotherapy and a Certified Colonic Therapist and Instructor, eagerly provides education and beneficial colon hydrotherapy and lymphatic drainage therapy.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a hand manipulation of the lymphatic points throughout the body along with gentle high-frequency equipment and Chinese cupping methods designed to help lymphatic fluid move into the elimination system, removing toxins from the body, Long explained.
“The most underrated purifying system in the human body is the lymphatic system, an integral part of the immune system,” she said. “It is a person’s ‘Life Flow System.’ This system and all of its capillaries are a major part of the body’s cleansing of excess toxic waste.”
Before opening her wellness institute, Long attended numerous classes that included specialized training in the United States and other countries and learned under the mentorship of alternative health leaders such as Hannah Kroeger, Sir Dr. Charles McWilliams and Dr. Simon De Montfort. Ultimately, she also discovered colon hydrotherapy and realized internal cleansing complements lymphatic drainage.
When prescribed by a medical doctor and facilitated by an I-ACT and National Board Certified Colon Hydrotherapist, colon hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine without using drugs.
Today, her wellness institute offers a range of services and products, and her unique brand of therapy and wellness has landed her in the spotlight in news media publications and television segments and attracts clients from Fort Bend and far beyond.
Long is the first colon hydro therapist to be certified in the US as the first national instructor being asked by the founding members of the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy (I-ACT) to be on the committee to compose and establish the guidelines /Educational handbook for all therapists both nationally and internationally.
This handbook is still the foundation and is used today by all certified therapists.
“Good health is more than a state of mind. It is effort and intentional,” Long said. “Invest in wellness, not in illness; your health is your wealth.”

Lillie Kay's Boutique
STYLES SENT AROUND THE NATION
Lillie Kay’s Boutique may be based out of a small Texas town, but it ships across the nation, and for good reason — this boutique is known for its distinctive items and trendy pieces.
In a time when body positivity is rising, specifically in fashion, Lillie Kay’s Boutique stands out with its styles, which vary as much as the sizes, with clothing ranging from Small to 3XL. It also offers children’s clothing, home decor, jewelry, accessories and gifts.
In 2022, Lillie Kay’s Boutique stepped onto the scene as Business of the Year from the Needville Area Chamber of Commerce, then it was named one of the best boutiques and gift shops in Fort Bend County for the second year in a row in 2023 and since then, the victories continued.
“Our online presence has really grown in the last year. We have shipped all over the United States — something most wouldn’t think would happen to a small town boutique,” said Tiffany Lehman, the boutique’s owner.
One element in this triumph is Lillie Kay’s Boutique’s approach to customer service; when people enter her place, Lehman, wants them to feel welcomed, “like family” upon arrival.
“We are a small-town boutique so we know most of our customers,” she said. “It is essentially like a hang-out spot.”
That fellowship is a reminder of what community means to Lehman and why she ensures that her business is a supporter of community efforts, including the Needville Youth Fair, Needville Senior Citizens, Needville Lions Club, Needville Education Foundation, Fort Bend County Fair and school organizations from Needville and the Rosenberg area.”
“Supporting our community is something I personally like to do,” Lehman said. “I don’t do it for the recognition; I do it because I am able to, and I want to help out wherever I can.”
“I hope we stand out as a business that will be there for you when one may be in a time of need” — whether the matter is community support or fashion passions.
A FASHION NICHE
Although Lehman considers herself “just an average person who likes average things and styles,” she does step out of her comfort zone and in doing so, elevates her boutique.
The key in fashion, she said, is to keep in mind that “people want items they can wear or use year-round.” So Lehman is “realistic when it comes to fashion trends and the items she carries in store.”

Sign Gypsies
CELEBRATING LIFE'S SPECIAL MOMENTS
Patti Jan’s step into becoming a franchise owner of a popular spirit-lifting yard sign business came in 2020 when her youngest daughter was set to celebrate a highly-anticipated 21st birthday. The fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, however, altered those plans. “We couldn’t take her on the trip that we had planned so someone mentioned to me to do a yard sign for her,” Jan recalled. She ordered the sign online from a company called Sign Gypsies.
A month later Jan discovered the business owner worked with her, so Jan offered to help when business was busy. Ultimately the business owner had plans to move and asked Jan if she wanted to purchase the business. “I thought it would be so much fun. What better job to have, making others smile?” Jan said. “I went home and talked to my husband and jumped on the opportunity.”
Sign Gypsies offers yard sign greetings for a plethora of occasions —holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, baby announcements, weddings, wedding showers, graduation, and more.
“Graduation season is right around the corner,” Jan shared as a kind reminder. “Don’t wait until the last minute to book a sign for your graduate.”

Notably, as a small business owner, Lehman has the flexibility to focus on individual needs without overwhelming her customers with choices; it also allows her to remain familiar with style sensations to keep her products relevant and appealing.
Shortly after opening her boutique, Lehman said she recognized that smaller businesses are “a niche that’s needed” and they “are thriving these days and we’ll continue to thrive,” which is why she also extends her support to other small fashion businesses.
Some clothing lines found at her boutique come from smaller womenowned fashion businesses like Washco Apparel and Layerz Clothing. Other notable and nationwide brands carried at Lillie Kay’s Boutique include Dear John Denim, Natalie Woods Designs jewelry and Mud Pie.
The boutique’s bestselling lines include Mud Pie, Sweet Grace Candles, Natalie Wood Designs, Layerz Clothing and Another Love Clothing. Additionally, Lehman hand-picks each item available in her boutique and “most items are exclusive to Lillie Kay’s Boutique for this area.”
“I like to keep the inventory new and fresh to my customers [by] staying up to date with current trends but not forgetting about the staple fashion pieces that one can wear year to year,” Lehman said.
“We offer a wide variety of items for everyone. Our age range for customers is infant to 80 year old ladies. There is something for everyone here at Lillie Kay’s Boutique.”
