THE BLACK COWBOY MUSEUM | The Black Cowboy Museum in Rosenberg is a heritage museum that features photos, stirrups, boots and more that reveal the rich history of the black cowboy and preserve the legacy of America’s Black Cowboy. The museum, which also hosts an annual Cowboy Hall of Fame Banquet And Ceremony, entered into a contract with Fort Bend County in 2022 to build a new facility for the museum’s operation. Owner and founder Larry Callies seeks monetary support to prepare for the transition. FORT BEND MUSEUM | Known as one of Texas’ best local history showcases, the Fort Bend Museum in Richmond allows visitors to travel through time to experience life on the Brazos River. ROSENBERG RAILROAD MUSEUM | Experience Texas railroading history at the Rosenberg Railroad Museum in the downtown area of the city. The museum resembles the circa 1900 Union Depot that served Rosenberg rail travelers as they made their way through Fort Bend County. Indoor cabinets house historic artifacts, including lanterns, oil lamps, tools and photos of Rosenberg at the turn of the century. Visitors can view the model railroad layouts on display, the restored 1879 business car, “Quebec,” a switching station and Tower 17, the last tower in Texas that operated. | Richmond is also home to the central library in the Fort Bend County Libraries system — the George Memorial Library. As the flagship of the library system, George Memorial hosts the largest collection of materials in the Fort Bend County Libraries system, and it houses the Genealogy and Local History Department, the Jodie E. Stavinoha Amphitheater and
the Bohachevsky Gallery. The library also offers services that range from 3D printing, scanning and photocopying to fax machine and typewriter options, microfilm copies and notary services.
The newest addition to the Fort Bend Libraries system is the Fulshear Branch Library, which happens to be the third largest library. County and civic leaders celebrated its grand opening in Fulshear with a ribboncutting ceremony. The library includes an
outdoor terrace with charging stations, a drive-through book return in the parking lot, community meeting rooms, study rooms, a puppet theater, and a computer lab for technology classes and public use.

BRAZOS BEND STATE PARK | Camping, picnicking, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and fishing are high on the list of things to do at The Brazos Bend State Park, about a 5,000 acres home to alligators, deer, raccoons and birds. On Farm Road 2759, eight miles southeast of Richmond in eastern Fort Bend County, is Booth, a small unicorporated community. On SH 36 and FM 723 is Cumings, an unincorporated community along the Brazos River. Established in the early 1990s, this small residential development sits on land possibly owned by the Cumings family. E. W. Cumings Street runs through the subdivision.
On FM 762, five miles southeast of Richmond, is a small unincorporated community of Crabb. In the late 1890s, it had a school for black students and although it had a post office in 1894, it lost it in 1900. A fun fact about the small community is the film Lone Star Kid was inspired by an 11-year-old named Brian Zimmerman won an unofficial election for mayor in 1983.
On Farm Road 361, 13 miles south of Richmond and 4 miles northeast of Needville, is the village of Fairchilds, named for early settler Philo Fairchilds, who around 1840 built a home one mile south of the current site of the community. In 1890 Charles Blohm, August Bede, and Theo Aderholz established the initial settlement, which reportedly attracted Germans from other Texas counties.
About 21 miles southwest of Richmond is the historic City of Kendleton. It was once the site of a plantation belonging to William E. Kendall. In the 1860s, Kendall divided the plantation into small farms and sold to former slaves. The community is home to the 235-acre Bates M. Allen Park, located just outside Kendleton’s city limits. It features walking trails, wetlands, a sand volleyball court, a play area, an observation deck, a historical site, a lake, grills, a canoe ramp, and a fishing pier. The city also features plenty of historical markers, the King-Kennedy Memorial Park, and the FBC Heritage Unlimited Museum. In 1882 the New York, Texas, and Mexican Railway Company established the Macaroni Line, which led railway construction and transportation to pass through Kendleton on its way to Victoria.
