The beaches of Puerto Morelos, with fine and white sand, are among the most beautiful of the Mexican Caribbean. The proximity of the reef protects the coast, with low waves, ideal for swimming and practicing water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing. The reef with a depth of only two meters is an ideal destination for lovers of snorkeling, who will be lost in wonder at the spectacular view of the beautiful coral and colorful tropical fishes. In the marine park, beyond the reef, at a distance of about two nautical miles, there are some extraordinary points ideal for diving, such as “Cuevones”, “El Bocana”, “El Tunnel”, “Los Jardines”, “La Pared”, and “El Puente”. The boat C-56 “Juan Escutia”, a gunship of the Mexican Navy, was sunk into the park to a depth of 30 meters to create an artificial reef full of suggestive corals, sponges, gorgonians and an infinite variety of marine life. Many restaurants in Puerto Morelos offer visitors a wide variety of international cuisine and regional Mexican specialties. Of course, fish and seafood dominate the local cuisine. For lovers of fresh fish, beginning at noon, seafood and fresh fish can be directly purchased from the fishermen on the pier or in the local fishing cooperative, a good choice for those who want to prepare a barbecue in their apartment or in one of the many hotel rooms equipped with a kitchen. In the main square there is a craft market, called “Hunab Ku”, where local artisans and vendors offer their products which can satisfy all tastes and budgets. Far from the bustle of the busier centers like Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos is an oasis of relaxation with a quiet atmosphere ideal for walks along the beach, the main square, or the wharf. After a walk, there’s no harm in checking out one of the dozens of restaurants and cafes, many of which offer live music.
