Welcome to your January issue... At the time of writing, we’re still very much wrapped up in 2023 and the final throes of the year, with its Christmas parties, Santa being chauffeured around our streets, the carols, and all the end-of-term concerts, all of which make it such a fabulous time of the year.

Happy New Year

The American columnist and author, William E. Vaughan declared, “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” Which one applies to you I wonder, as 2024 looms into view? All the very best to you all for the year ahead and may it bring peace, good health, and happiness. At this time, the special thoughts of all our family go out to our dear mother who passed away a year ago. Where did 2023 go?

Inside Highlights 4 ........It's that time of the year again 7 ........ Hallam Travel

After the excitement and frenetic activities of December, January comes as a sharp reality check.

8 ....... March Podiatry

January can be seen as a poor relation. The festive season has passed, New Year’s Eve come and gone, and now the landscape ahead looks pretty bleak as we contemplate twelve months of a new year.

12 ...... Fenland Family History Society

The new year makes most people think about changes they would like to make to improve their lives, for example, getting a new job or moving to a new home. However, often these good intentions slip away into the ether as routine commitments take over.

20 ...... Curious Facts

The highlight of last year for me was the arrival of my first grandchild, a beautiful girl, who in just a few short weeks has already won the hearts of everyone who has met her. Thinking ahead, I’m looking forward to hopefully continuing to bring you a magazine that you enjoy reading each month while at the same time trying to enjoy more social time. I’ve already got a ‘Jolly Boys’ outing to Poland planned for the end of the month, but looking out of my window at the current inhospitable weather, I’m now wishing it was to somewhere warmer like Portugal...

It’s That Time of the Year Again!

E

very year, millions of people make New Year’s resolutions, in the hope that there may well follow certain changes in their behaviour or in their established lifestyles and routines. Every year, the recurring themes include a clutch of “favourites” such as taking a more active approach to health and fitness; adopting a different approach to handling their finances; and learning new things for personal and professional development. When making resolutions, or goal setting, you’re making a promise to yourself and your dreams. It’s all about being accountable and taking ownership of your actions. With goals in place,

you can then create a structure that keeps you on track and motivated. Deadlines and milestones which you set at this time are invaluable, reminding you to stay focused and disciplined. By sticking to your plan and putting in the effort, day after day, you develop habits that pave the way for your growth and success, whether it’s in your career or personal life. It is highly likely that several of the top twenty most common resolutions will look familiar to you, and some of them may have even lasted until February 1st!

✦ Take more exercise.

✦ Eat a healthier diet.

✦ Lose weight.

✦ Improve your powers of concentration.

✦ Get organised and be tidier.

✦ Get out more and meet new people.

✦ Learn a new skill, language, or hobby.

✦ Be more polite and improve your manners.

✦ Live life “to the max”.

✦ Get more quality sleep.

✦ Save more money/spend less money.

✦ Volunteer and give (more) to charity.

✦ Quit smoking and/or consume less alcohol.

✦ Let go of grudges – life’s too short!

✦ Spend more time with family and friends.

✦ Adopt a pet.

✦ Travel more.

✦ Stop being late for everything.

✦ Learn to control your emotions.

The last and most important point to consider is that all the positive changes you want to make must be permanent. You will need to work on sticking with the good habits you have adopted until they just become a natural part of who you are.

il 2025! nt u e n o t ve tha JANUARY 2024 but I’ll lea

Finally, my favourite resolution has got to be to stop procrastinating … 4

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY By Bridget Hunter

W

e cover the Fenlands including South Lincs, North Cambs and West Norfolk. Wishing you all a very happy new year. Celebrating the coming of the new year has changed over the passing years. And in different countries. The start of the year has changed. At one time it was at the end of March, hence the end of the tax year. Mainly it is now celebrated on January 1st. How you celebrate New Year’s Eve depends on where you live. In SCOTLAND they observe First Footing. The first to cross the threshold after midnight should be preferably a dark-haired man bringing gifts of coal and food, to bring earth and food in the coming year. SHETLAND still maintains the tradition of ‘Up Helly Aa’ with a parade of men in Viking dress carrying flaming torches through the streets to the waterside. There they throw the flaming torches into a boat setting it on fire and sending it out to sea, saying farewell to the old year. In BRAZIL, the custom is throwing white flowers into the sea each new year as an offer to Yemoja a god of water to bring good luck in the coming year. In SPAIN, many people eat twelve grapes eating one grape at each bell strike believing it brings good fortune. In COLOMBIA, they carry an empty case round the block which is thought to encourage lots of travel. In GERMANY, there is a custom called Glucksschwein which is Lucky Pig. Pigs appear as marzipan treats and eating them can foster good fortune in the new year. In CHINA, colour denotes good fortune and happiness. Their lucky colour is RED. In TURKEY, they sprinkle salt on their doorsteps at midnight to bring success in the new year. In DENMARK, the tradition of jumping off chairs in unison at midnight is a symbol for jumping into the new year. There is no wrong way to celebrate the impending new year, as long as you enjoy it.

anuary is a really good time for planning, so how about planning a three- or five-year crop rotation?

The three-year crop rotation involves the following: Year 1: Peas, beans, and fruiting vegetables: peas and beans absorb nitrogen from the air and store it in the roots; leaving the roots in after harvesting benefits next year’s crop. Year 2: Brassicas: these are nitrogen-hungry, so grow them where last year’s peas and beans grew. They are also susceptible to club root (a soil-borne fungus) so moving them around helps keep this at bay. Year 3: Roots, tubers, onions, and leaves: these crops do not have a particular “thirst” for nitrogen, so it is good to grow them after brassicas where the nitrogen content has been depleted. And if you have a very large plot, why not try a five-year rotation? Year 1 Brassicas; Year 2 Peas and beans; Year 3 Potatoes and fruiting veg; Year 4 The onion family; Year 5 Root and stem vegetables. The benefits of using this system include: • Soil fertility: Different crops have different nutrient requirements. Changing crops annually reduces the chance of soil deficiencies developing. • Weed control: Some crops, like potatoes and squashes, with dense foliage or large leaves, suppress weeds, thus reducing maintenance and weed problems in following crops. • Pest and disease control: Soil pests and diseases tend to attack specific plant families repeatedly. By rotating crops between sites, the pests tend to decline in

14 4

the period when their host plants are absent which helps reduce build-up of damaging populations of spores, eggs, and pests. Weather permitting, there are a few jobs that can be tackled this month: • Spray all fruit trees and bushes with a garlic winter wash on a fine day; do not spray in frosty conditions. It won’t hurt to hold the job over to next month. • Another job at the top of the list is cleaning up the plot by disposing of all the damaged and rotten crops: most of the overwintering vegetables will suffer if the conditions are wet. Also remove any leaves, as these are a perfect hide-out for slugs and snails. • Protect overwintering plants from cold, and check stakes and ties. • On days when you can’t work on the plot, clean the shed, greenhouse, tools, and linseed oil any wooden handles. Check that the watering can and buckets don’t leak and that the wheelbarrow doesn’t have a flat tyre! Seed trays and plant pots can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution to kill diseases that may have carried over to the new seedlings. • In non-freezing weather, shallots can be planted. Shallots take longer to grow than onions, but if planted now, should be ready earlier in the summer. • Any stored fruit and vegetables need checking for rotten or damaged produce and evidence of mice.

Happy New Year and here’s to another twelve months of successful gardening!

Not forgetting that there is the payment of the tax liability for the year ended 5 April 2023 which is also due on the 31 January 2024, but of course you shouldn’t forget that there is also the need to make your first payment on account for the anticipated liability for the year ended 5 April 2024. You need to remember that your payment to HMRC must be cleared funds on or before the due date, otherwise it can be considered to be late.

the purchase of new plant and machinery for the business. Then what about maximising your ISA limits, ensuring that you make use of this effective tax planning tool. Make use of other allowances, for example the gift allowance of £3,000 or your Capital Gains allowance of £6,000, as this will be reducing to £3,000 from 6 April 2024. There is so much to consider, but with careful planning and timing then all of the above and more, can be achievable. For information or advice contact your local Whitings LLP office to discuss matters further.

Once we have got past the 31 January 2024 deadlines, we can then consider period up to 5 April 2024 as being the time in which you should be considering your year end planning, and this is relevant for individuals and businesses. So, you will be looking at making tax efficient pension contributions, or perhaps

Interesting and Curious Facts of Yesteryear Written by Chris Donald, author of ‘Wisbech’s Secret Princess’ and ‘Interesting and Curious Facts of Yesteryear’

THE TALLEST HOUSE IN WISBECH each’s Mill on Lynn Road is the last surviving mill left in Wisbech and although it is used as a house and not a mill now, it is important that it still remains when so many other historic buildings in Wisbech are no longer. There were more than seven hundred mills in the Fens but there were only two mills in Cambridgeshire that had eight sails and Leach’s Mill was one of them.

L

Ever since the 1300s there have been records of mills here at Wisbech. In the 1500s there was even a small mill in the Market Place. Some of the mills were used to crush seeds to make oil which was then shipped out from the port. In the end there were seven mills producing this export that could amount to a massive thousand tons. And around the Fens you would see many windmills mostly used to pump water into the dykes. Leach’s Mill was built some time before 1778 and they did say that one of the beams had the date 1643 and the initials SH carved on it. Not only is it a tall building but it is even higher because it is built on a mound. By doing this it meant that being taller it would catch the wind more and if there was a flood it wouldn’t affect the mill. But this mill didn’t stay the same height. It went up and then down. Originally it was six floors high but then it was increased to eight. If you included the mound, it stood ninety feet tall, twenty-seven and a half metres. That’s about the height of the Statue of Liberty. The picture below shows the eightstorey mill. It is huge. The sails went up and down too. It originally had four sails; this was increased to a massive eight, making it the tallest eight sail windmill in the whole of Britain. But then in 1863, one of the sails fell, landing on the granary next door but luckily not

20

doing too much damage. To balance it up they took one of the sails off so now the mill had six sails. But then they went back to eight! Finally, in 1897 they removed all the sails and in 1947 the wooden cupola at the top was removed too. And in 1965 the mill ceased to work altogether. Four years later the Mobil Oil Company bought it and then later, Mill Stainless Products Ltd purchased it, and then in November 1973 the mill caught fire. Because of the funnel shape of it, it acted like a chimney and in consequence the fire burnt very brightly, doing a great deal of damage. For safety reasons they had to take the top two floors off so now it reverted from eight storeys to the original six storeys high. Ten years later the owner added some fifty tons of brickwork to replace bricks that had been damaged in the fire and then they started converting the shell of the mill into a dwelling place in 1990. After two years the first phase of the work was complete. The inside of the tower is beautifully done even if the walls are 26in (66cm) thick. What is it like to live in a converted mill? Well for a start, if you’re on the top floor and it is very windy, you can actually feel the mill moving very slightly! During the hot weather the mill stays quite cool, but in the winter the top floors are always warmer than downstairs. But you do have to be fit, there are five flights of stairs with a staggering total of sixty steps; the normal house has twelve to fifteen steps. And on top of this, being built on a mound there are fourteen steps from the road up to the front door, which means to get from the road to the top of the mill it is a total ninety-seven steps! Despite this, Duncan and family really enjoy living in the mill and when you have climbed to the top just look at the view...

Change your mindset on money this New Year By Lin Stanton, Debt Centre Manager for Fenland Christians Against Poverty (CAP)

Have fun for free

Money can significantly affect the way we feel, especially when there isn’t enough of it. It can make us feel stressed, defeated, anxious and fearful, amongst many other emotions. Understanding the power that money has over our mood is the first step to reclaiming control. Read on for five ways to change your mindset on money, so that you can enjoy a more positive 2024. Build a budget We all have so many things to pay for in our everyday lives. With a mix of bills, food, treats, subscriptions and unexpected costs, managing money can feel overwhelming at times. Building a budget can help you see your financial situation more clearly, meaning you’ll be able to make decisions about where to cut costs and feel more in control. There are lots of free budgeting resources and tips available online, including at capuk. org/money-and-debt-advice/ building-a-budget

Talk to others Struggling with money can be an extremely isolating experience. This can become a vicious circle, as we’re less likely to seek help and support when we feel alone. By sharing our worries and experiences with another J ANUA RY 2023

person, we start to take back control and lessen the burden that we’ve been carrying alone. You might also find that others are facing similar challenges, meaning you can both share your experiences and tools for managing the situation. If you’d rather speak to someone impartial, you might find it useful to contact an organisation such as Samaritans (call 116123) or SHOUT (text 85258).

Set goals Having a goal to work towards can make us feel more positive. Even a small amount of progress bit-by-bit gives us something to celebrate and feel proud of. Choose an aim that’s realistic, such as saving up to go out for a meal or buying a new pair of shoes and remember to set a new goal once you’ve smashed it!

There are tons of free and cheap activities and days out available in communities across the UK. Find out what events are going on at your local church, and keep an eye on capuk.org/blog where you can find useful tips and tricks throughout the year.

Get support Everyone needs help at times. It’s nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. If you’re struggling with your finances, support is available for free from a range of charities and organisations including Christians Against Poverty (CAP). CAP provides expert debt advice, guidance on finding work and money education, all delivered face-to-face so you’ll receive an effective combination of practical and emotional support. To find out more, see capuk.org/help Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK charity working with more than 800 affiliated churches to deliver debt help, budgeting guidance, support to find work, life skills education and more. HOW TO KEEP YOUR PC HAPPY IN 2024

hile it’s the beginning of the year, many of us will be thinking about the positive changes we need to make to our lives, such as losing weight, drinking less alcohol, stopping smoking etc. But what about keeping your relationship with your PC happy and healthy?

make sure you have informed your email provider if you have changed your mobile phone number (make sure they have your mobile number NOT a landline) or alternative email address as these are used if your account is hacked, or you have forgotten your password.

Strengthen your digital security First on the list is to take the time now to start changing your passwords FOR EVERYTHING, making sure you have a different one for every account. Use a mixture of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols to create unique passwords. Two factor authentication adds an extra layer of security. This is usually a combination of something you know and something you have. The thing you know is often a pin number. The thing you have might be a unique token generated each time you log in. This is used in addition to your username and password. Most importantly,

Make back-ups of your photos, videos, and music If your device gets lost, damaged, or stolen, you run the risk of never being able to retrieve the irreplaceable documents stored on it. To save music, photos and documents, discs, memory sticks and removeable hard drives will suffice. However, it is worth using some sort of cloud storage. Do remember though that if you want to make your back-ups one hundred percent fail-safe, it is important to have both physical and online copies saved. Get rid of desktop clutter Keeping screenshots, images and

shortcuts to files on your desktop can make finding things almost impossible. To get the initial abundance of apps out the way, create a folder on your desktop named ‘Old Desktop’ and transfer all your clutter into it. Your desktop will immediately look cleaner and more manageable. From there, you can go through the folder in your own time and put all the files in their rightful place, perhaps even sort out other folders whilst you are at it. Upgrade your PC If your PC still runs on coal, or even worse, Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 (which died on January 10th, 2023), now is the time to upgrade to Windows 11. As we’ve mentioned time and time again, continuing to use Windows 8 or older on the public internet is very much like going out in public with a virus and coughing on people. And sadly, we all know where that can lead, and don’t forget Windows 10 will breathe its last on October 14th, 2025.

YEAR IN REVIEW 2023

ow that 2023 has come to a close it’s time to reflect on what’s been another really busy and successful year for us.

We would like to start by thanking our clients for their support during our first few years. We would also like to thank our professional colleagues who have supported us with advice and assistance. The most exciting thing is that we’ve turned three! The last three years have zipped by in a flash, and we thought now would be a great time to review the shared values we thought were important for our law firm in those very early days. We started with the premise that lawyers shouldn’t always just be about the billable hour. These are the things we thought and still believe are important:

CLIENT CARE

Our core focus is on our clients and providing a genuinely personal service. We listen, ask questions, and don’t presume to know what our clients want. We aim to make the client experience with us as effortless as possible. We work in the way that best suits our clients, whether that be meeting face-toface at our offices, their businesses, or homes, or online via video calls where time pressures make that the most productive way to meet.

INNOVATION

We see it as part of our job to be creative, to add value for our clients and, to deliver more in a better way. It’s an ongoing process and has to be for the fast-changing world we live in. We don’t believe

that, because something has always been done in a particular way that there might not be a better, more efficient way to work.

COMMUNITY

We believe in local community involvement and supporting local businesses and charities because, without local community we would all struggle. We believe as business owners we have a responsibility to support and give back wherever we can. We have supported local charities with donations (and have again made a donation to the Ferry Project instead of sending Christmas cards).

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

We run an (almost!) paperless office and are committed to reducing our environmental impact wherever we can. This is something that we feel will become more important over the coming years and we are pleased to have set up our offices to work in this way from day one.
